Happy Birthday Scottish Golfer Sandy Lyle.

Saandy was on February 9th 1958 in Shrewsbury, England but considered Scottish, Lyle was one of Europe's top golfers during the 1980s. He is one of the golfers credited with breaking American domination of golf on the world stage.

Lyle was introduced to golf as soon as he would walk. His father, Alex, was a teaching professional at Hawkstone Park GC and had his son playing with miniature clubs from the age of 3. Lyle had an outstanding amateur career culminating in victory in the English Amateur Stroke Play championship in 1975 and 1977. He also served on the Walker Cup squad twice.

He turned professional in 1977 and was nominated Rookie of the Year in his first full season a year later. His first professional victory was the 1978 Nigerian Open. As a player, Lyle is renowned for his cool temperament and focus. However, his form is not always consistent and tends to play either exceptionally well or exceptionally bad.

Lyle won his first Major, the Open, in 1985. Perhaps the highlight of his career was victory in the 1988 US Masters. He was the first non-American to win the event, a victory made sweeter because of the intense competition between America and Europe in all aspects of golf. Lyle has also played on 5 Ryder Cup squads and represented Scotland 3 times in the World Cup.

On a personal level, Lyle has an amiable character and is modest despite his success and stardom. He enjoys Chinese food and is somewhat of an expert. He is also a keen enthusiastic of motorbike scrambling. In 1989, Lyle's form began to slump. His last victory was the Volvo Masters in 1992 and since then has quietly retired from the main tour.

On turning 50 in 2008 he played on the Champions Tour and the European Senior Tour winning his first tournament in 19 years when he captured his first European Senior Tour title at the 2011 ISPS Handa Senior World Championship, held in China.

Lyle has morphed into a lumberjack since bringing down the curtain on a near-50-year career last year. A five-hour round of golf is like a stroll in the park compared to a hard day-long shift developing his farming skills at his Balquhidder estate 10 miles north-west of Callander.

Nelly Korda

The American professional golfer Nelly Korda has had a big influence on the LPGA Tour. Born on July 28, 1998, in Bradenton, Florida, Nelly is from an athletic family: her sister, Jessica Korda, is a successful golfer, and her father, Petr Korda, was a former professional tennis player.

Nelly started playing golf at an early age and advanced through the junior golf divisions fast. Throughout her amateur career, she represented the United States in international competitions including the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Solheim Cup, among other notable accomplishments.

Nelly became a professional in 2016 and joined the LPGA Tour, where she quickly established herself. At the 2018 Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship, she won her maiden professional match, demonstrating her skill and promise as a rising star in women's golf.

Niall Horan on the rapid rise and multiple successes of Modest Golf

Niall Horan might be a global superstar in the music industry, but even he admits it was tough to be taken seriously when he decided to enhance his passion for golf by starting a management company.

But, after a hugely successful 2018 for the Modest Golf Management stable, the venture fully justified the time and effort the singer-songwriter and his team put into launching, and maintaining, a company which now boasts 15 clients in the professional and amateur game.

Their reputation was enhanced with the signing of Ryder Cup star Tyrrell Hatton, who remains the most recent winner on the PGA Tour following his victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the last event to reach a conclusion before the coronavirus pandemic forced professional golf to shut down after one round of The Players Championship the following week.

Another impressive performer at Bay Hill was Christiaan Bezuidenhout, another Modest Golf client who wasted no time in getting over his disappointing final-round 79 when he opened with a 65 in his first competitive round at TPC Sawgrass, a seven-under card that will, unfortunately, be wiped from the archives.

Bezuidenhout was one of Horan's big winners last season after he upstaged Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia in romping to a six-shot triumph at Valderrama, although Guido Migliozzi had already put Modest Golf on the map with two European Tour victories in Kenya and Belgium.

The Magical Kenya Open is, of course, far from the most prestigious event in professional golf, but Horan cared little as he was glued to the action watching the talented young Italian scoring his first win the the big leagues.

"It was a huge moment for us," said Horan with no hint of understatement, a testament to his passion and knowledge of the sport. "The Kenya Open is possibly a tournament that even the most ardent golf fans don't take much interest in, but even now I think back to Guido's performance that week and it still gives me goosebumps!

"When he had a one-shot lead going down the last, watching him hit the pin with his second shot into 18 was just insane. He just handled himself so well in the circumstances. When it's your first time leading down the stretch in a European Tour event, you don't know if you're going to combust or not.

"But Guido held his nerve brilliantly, and for me sitting at home watching one of our boys coming through like that, it was a huge moment for myself and Modest Golf.”

Horan remains admirably grounded with his hopes and aspirations for the company he co-founded with Mark McDonnell which has not only taken on young players, but has also sponsored tournaments such as the mixed-field ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland.

"Our first priority when we started the business was signing young amateurs and watching them go over the brow of the hill and into professional sport," said Horan as he explained the priorities in the embryonic days of Modest Golf.

"When you're in my position and you want to set up a sports management company, and you still only look 15 years of age, it's definitely going to be tough to be taken seriously.

"But you're only as good as the job you do, and the golfers you sign, and we made sure we were signing young players who were passionate about the game, as well as being hard workers, who had the ability to be in contention down the stretch on a Sunday and win.

"Guido was the first to do that for us, and then he won again at the Belgian Knockout, and the Christiaan Bezuidenhout took the baton and won in Spain. We also had a few winners on the European Challenge Tour, and Leona Maguire won twice on the Symetra Tour in America.

"Christiaan holding off Jon Rahm to win in fine fashion was another memorable moment, especially on a course as tough as Valderrama. As a company, you need things like that to go in your favour if you're going to be taken as seriously as we were taking everything.

"We've put a lot of time and investment into doing this properly, we are on site at various tournaments whenever we can, and I can guarantee you we are not finished yet."

Despite their successes in all forms of golf, Horan remains keen to retain a relatively small stable of players which is headlined by Hatton and Bezuidenhout, who will both be in the field for The Masters in November, but also features the likes of Brendon Lawlor, long-renowned as one of the best disability golfers in the world.

"Signing Tyrrell was also a significant move for us, but we were equally delighted to welcome Brendon Lawlor on board," Horan added. "Mark McDonnell and myself had always said we wanted to keep the business fairly small, keep the stable to around 10 or so players, and not get too far ahead of ourselves.

"There's always the danger of taking on too much and getting to the stage where you're not sure when your players are teeing it up each week. We didn't want that, we just wanted to keep it all on one page and avoid letting things run away from us.

"The business certainly took a while to get going, but we're in our fourth year now and it feels like it was so much harder to get to a certain point where it starts to roll a little more smoothly. But it's hard to believe where we are now as a company compared to 18 months ago.

"If you write down everything that's happened for us over the last 18 months, you can't help but think: "Wow, that was quick!" But it's just reward for all the hard work we've put in."

In 2014 Sandy won the World Hickory Open Championship, an open tournament for amateur or professional hickory golfers. Hickory golf is a variation of golf played with hickory-shafted golf clubs.  Part of the attraction of playing with hickory clubs is that they reintroduce ‘feel’ to the golf shot. Proponents also claim that hickory golf allows golfers to play classic golf courses as they are meant to be played    “I’m delighted to have won my fourth Major,” joked Sandy afterwards.

As a former winner I would have thought Sandy would get an invite to play in majors, but not so, last year in the run up to the 150th Open at St Andrews he was forced to retire injured commenting;

“When you’re pushing on the age that I am now, injuries are always sort of around the corner and you’ve just got to be careful what you do.”

Lyle’s withdrawal came after just one hole of the second round – a double-bogey six at the first.

Earlier in 2022 Sandy became the first Scottish golfer to play in 100 majors, a remarkable feat in itself, although  Lyle was completely unaware that he created history. It came in his 41st appearance at Augusta National and the 1988 winner said after missing the cut for the eighth year in a row that next year will be his last.“I was not aware, no,” said Lyle when he was asked about his major milestone by The Scotsman after carding a second-round 76 for a 14-over total at the Georgia venue.

“No-one has ever mentioned it to me. Does that make me feel better? A little bit,” said the two-time major winner. “But I suppose that is pretty sporty and something I can tell my grandkids in years to come.” he added.

Sandy went on to say;

“I think probably next year might be the end of the Lyle attack on the golf course,I think my older son (Stuart) is coming out and a few of his buddies, and I think my younger son (James) is probably coming out, so we're going to be a full family, I think, so I think it will be the end of the day.

I think he will continue to play in invitations and the senior tour.

Solheim Cup legend Trish Johnson, Ryder Cup player Barry Lane and European Challenge Tour winner Ben Stow have confirmed their entry into the world-first Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla from April 4-6.

The innovative format breaks new ground in the world of golf, bringing together 40 players from each of the Ladies European Tour, Challenge Tour and Staysure Tour, plus three invited amateurs, into a single 123-player field, to compete in a 54-hole stroke play tournament where one champion will be crowned.

Johnson, a regular contributor to Sky Sports Golf, has represented Europe in The Solheim Cup an astounding eight times, in a career highlighted by 26 professional victories and a Ladies European Tour Order of Merit title in 1990. The Englishwoman is now after a new trophy to add to her collection.

“I’m extremely excited about this new event,” Johnson said. “I do think this is the way forward and there needs to be more innovative events like this that offer variation from the traditional 72-hole formats.  

“I love the fact we are playing for one prize fund and it’s great that we will be competing against and engaging with players from both the Challenge and Staysure Tours.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of global interest to see who comes out on top and hopefully it will be one of the players from the LET. I can’t wait!”

A British Masters and Scottish Open champion, Lane has 17 professional victories to his name, including five European Tour titles and six Staysure Tour wins. He also represented Europe in The 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry. A big supporter of innovation in golf, the 58 year old is thrilled to be playing in the Jordan Mixed Open.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “To be playing with the ladies and playing with the Challenge Tour guys — it’s all sorts of golf.

“They are three different games really, with the women hitting it a lot straighter than us, the Challenge Tour guys extremely long off the tee, and the seniors having strong course management.

“We tend to plot our way around the golf course more than overpower the golf course and I think that can be an advantage, especially if it’s windy, because we keep the ball on the ground and we have all those little shots.

“I hope it all pans out really well, because I think it will be something very special.”

For Stow, who narrowly missed out on a European Tour card last season after winning the Prague Golf Challenge, the Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla will provide an intriguing opportunity to put his skills to the test.

“It will be really interesting having us all playing in the same field,” he said. “My friends who have played the course before say it’s really good, and it looks like a great place.

“I think the Challenge Tour is a really, really high standard now. The top 60 guys are really good players, and we foster a very competitive environment.

“I’m really looking forward to it, and it will be really interesting if there is a cross-tour battle down the stretch, that will be fascinating to watch.”

Last year, the European Tour’s GolfSixes saw men and women professionals compete against, and alongside each other, and after the success of last week’s ISPS Handa Vic Open, the Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla will once again raise the stakes — with players from three distinct divisions united in their pursuit of the Triquetra Trophy, the lion’s share of a $393,000 prize fund, and the bragging rights of being the inaugural Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla champion.

The pristine Ayla Golf Club, located in Aqaba, Jordan, will continue to build its legacy as a venue for championship golf when it welcomes Johnson, Lane, Stow and the entire Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla field.

Course set-up will be the most crucial component of the Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla, and tournament officials have undertaken a thorough analysis of players from all three tours — examining everything from carry distances to trajectories and spin rates — in order to ensure the fairest possible set up.

Ayla Golf Club will play as firm as it can, with pin locations accessible to all players who approach from the correct area, while competitors will play from one of three teeing grounds. Ladies European Tour players will take on the golf course from 6,139 yards, Staysure Tour players from 6,601 yards and Challenge Tour players from 7,152 yards.

Jon Rahm is back in the winner’s circle

The 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club was a mental examination with only four players finishing under par after day four. Jon Rahm played in this event as an amateur and finished tied twenty third. Rahm impressed at the 2016 U.S. Open when he won the low-amateur award. He turned professional shortly after and this article will review his biggest wins on both the DP World Tour & PGA Tour. 

Torrey Pines

Rahm finished second at 2016 RBC Canadian Open which claimed his PGA Tour card for the 2016/2017 season. Rahm first found his love for Torrey Pines when he won the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open. He held an extremely long putt on the 18th green for an eagle as this putt confirmed his first victory on the PGA Tour. After this win he shot up in the world rankings to 46 which meant he qualified for the majors in 2017. The win confirmed that Rahm is a special talent and this was the first time that he came on my radar in the world of golf.

2017

Farmers Insurance Open was not the only tournament that Rahm won in 2017. He won in Europe at the 2017 Dubai Duty Irish Open on The Strand Course at Portstewart. This victory showed that Rahm has the game to win all over the world regardless of the course or weather conditions. The Irish Open was Rahm’s first win on the European Tour and he won the title of Rookie of the year in 2017.

2018 

Rahm won his national open in 2018 at Centro Nacional de Golf. The Open de Espana was his second win on European Tour. I had the pleasure to play that course at 2022 ISPS Handa Spanish Open earlier this year. Rahm shot 20 under for four rounds and this win was significant regarding his development as a professional. He also won another event in 2018 when he won Hero World Challenge which was hosted by Tiger Woods in December 2018.

2019

His best finish on the PGA Tour in 2019 was at the Zurich Classic at New Orleans. Rahm teamed up with Texan Ryan Palmer to win the double format tournament at New Orleans. He also had success in 2019 on European Tour when he won the Irish Open for a second time at Lahinch. Rahm shot a fantastic final round of 62 showing again that he is one of the best players in the world. Rahm kept his best performance to the DP World Tour Championship in 2019 when he won the final event of the season. Rahm was ranked world number three at the end of 2019.

2020/2021

Rahm continued to win the biggest events and on the toughest courses throughout the covid-19 pandemic in both 2020 &2021. Having no crowds did not affect Rahm as he won the 2020 Memorial Tournament at Jack Nicklaus Muirfield Village. He went to world number one after his win at Memorial. Rahm continued his dominance in 2020 when he beat Dustin Johnson in a play-off at the BMW Championship. Rahm hung around at Torrey Pines at 2021 U.S. Open for three rounds and holed two extraordinary putts to win his first major on the final day.

2022

Rahm struggled with the flat stick in 2022 but found his game to win the Mexico Open earlier this Summer. He ran through the field at the final day of 2022 BMW PGA Championship to shoot 62. Rahm brought his good form into Open de Espana which took place from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th October 2022. Rahm was back to his best over the weekend with shooting two rounds of 65 &62 to win the 2022 Open de Espana by six shots. Rahm is currently 10th in the DP World Tour Rankings and still has a great chance of winning the DP World Tour with five events left in the season.
