Logan Fields never knew his parents.
Sure, there were fleeting glimpses of memories. The hint of long golden hair blowing in the wind. A warm laugh teasing at the edges of his consciousness. A pair of eyes meeting his from above.
He knew that he'd been living with his grandparents since he was a toddler. Two and a half to fifteen is a long time. It was only natural to assume that he wouldn't remember much about them from when he was that small.
But there was nothing else to remember.
The Christmas and birthday letters that were lost years ago, long after they stopped coming. The calls that lasted until he was barely into elementary school. The presents that got more half-hearted until finally he knew not to expect them.
His grandparents were nice. He would never take them for granted. They'd given up so much taking care of him, and in return they all gained a lot. They gained a sweet, intelligent boy who loved helping with their business and knew exactly how to cheer them up after a long day. He gained a whole new set of guardians that would do anything for him, no matter the cost.
But it just wasn't the same. And Logan hated himself for feeling that way. How could he let himself betray what his grandparents had done for him all his life? He really didn't want to see them again. Not unless it was simply to ask why.
And yet he found himself longing to be held by the woman with the long golden hair. He wanted to tell a joke that earned him another one of those warm belly laughs. He wanted to wake up one day and see those eyes that mirrored his own so he could finally have a complete family again.
Logan hated himself for missing his parents almost as much as he hated them for leaving him behind.
