For indoor use, we're big fans of the Logi Circle 2 Wired from Logitech – though it's more of a gran or pet cam than a serious security camera. It's wired (although a battery pack is available), and as it's weatherproof it can technically be used outdoors. Video quality is very good too, and it's simply a lot of fun to use.

There are a number of other very good smart security camera options, including the Nest and Canary cams (see below for more) but another one that stands out is the Hive View. Not for its features – which, to be honest, are pretty basic – but for the fact that it actually looks quite boldly stylish rather than just resembling a small CCTV camera or an eye on a plinth, as most of its rivals do.

This selection of cameras has it all, whether you need infrared for filming at night, or automatic motion sensing so you know as soon as something has happened. Some of the smarter cameras add facial recognition, and can tell the difference between a stranger and a member of your family.

For the most comprehensive coverage of your property, you want something that includes night vision and can record at a decent quality – and almost all cameras now come with HD resolution at least.

We've also tried to limit this list to cameras that can serve up alerts that are reliable and actually useful – if your camera is pinging your phone every time a leaf blows past, you're soon going to get tired of having to check it.

If you want to be able to communicate with whatever's on the other side of the camera – your kids, your pets, your elderly parents – then make sure you go for an option that includes two-way audio. You'll also need something with an alarm if you want to scare off intruders as well as film them, though this is a less common feature.

For the most comprehensive coverage of your property, you want something that includes night vision and can record at a decent quality – and almost all cameras now come with HD resolution at least.

With all those factors and considerations in mind, here are our choices for the best security camera in 2018 – you should find something to suit your needs.

The Nest Cam IQ is one of the most intelligent Wi-Fi cameras on the market, with facial recognition, a 4K image sensor, and person tracking. See below for the indoor version, but this exterior version comes with IP65 weatherproofing: it'll stay recording whatever the British weather throws at it, and can operate in temperatures from -40°C to 45°C.

Picture quality is excellent both during the day and night, and the motion tracking (which zooms in and follows motion) and facial recognition (which only alerts you to unknown faces) are incredibly useful features which actually work.

It's a top-notch package but it's expensive, and to get the most out of it (like cloud storage archives or motion zones) you really need to sign up for a subscription too. You can just about get by with the live motion alerts and livestreaming (no subscription required) if you're on a budget.

The previous, cheaper version of the outdoor Nest cam is still on sale too if you want to save some money – it does have a cable attached though, rather than working wirelessly, which means it's a bit easier to sabotage for potential intruders.

Netgear's Arlo isn't just a single camera, it's a rapidly-growing range that shares the same software platform – at the time of writing you've got six different cameras to pick from. You can also choose between packs of one, two or more units, and accessories such as a Wi-Fi expander hub for outdoor use.

We've named the Arlo Pro 2 as our top pick, with its wire-free operation, two-way audio 1080p HD video, weather resistance, built-in security siren, Amazon Alexa support and the option to store footage on a USB drive. Cheaper models are available if you don't need such sharp video or a different set of features. The new Arlo Go, for instance, works with cellular networks if you need a camera out of range of your home Wi-Fi.

As with most security cameras, you can tap into your video feeds from anywhere using your phone, and get motion alerts – but where the Arlo range stands out is with the wireless, battery-charged operation and waterproofing.

For free, you get seven days or up to 1GB of cloud storage for up to five cameras, which compares very well with rivals such as Nest. These recordings are only triggered when motion is detected, but it should be enough for most users – how many meaningless shots of nothing happening in your back garden to you need?

No current smart home camera is as fun to use as the Logi Circle 2: it's a bit like the home monitoring equivalent of a Fitbit. For example, it preps "day brief" videos that show a sped-up version of the day's action of the day (so you don't have to sift through reams of footage of the slightest motion). That makes it more suitable for keeping an eye on the dog while at work, rather than scanning for burglars.

There’s two-way talking too, fast responses to remote commands, speedy zooming, and an adjustable field of view. The app is nice and slick, complimenting the camera's own neat design, and you can control the Circle via Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit or one of Logitech's Pop smart home buttons.

There are some negatives: you only get 24 hours of cloud storage for free for instance. For longer-term access, you have to pay: £2.99 a month snags you 14-day Cloud access, or £7.99 a month for 31 days. You need to subscribe to the top tier to set you custom motion zones and detect people in front of the camera.

Buy a rechargeable battery base as well and you can put the weatherproof camera anywhere in Wi-Fi range (it lasts up to three months off a charge). There's also a fully wireless incarnation, but this is a different shape to the wired version and has a different range of accessories. It might lack some security features, but as a smart home camera for watching pets or your gran, the wired version of Circle 2 is hard to beat.

We wouldn't recommend Hive View as a 'proper' security camera per se but if you want an attractive camera for monitoring pets and relatives that can also alert you to felons, it's really good. We're big fans of its striking, stylish looks, and the monthly subscription is unusually cheap (you get one day of video stored for free).

Admittedly the Hive View is rather limited features-wise at present, but Hive products have a tendency to get better with age, and we're reasonably confident it'll add Alexa support (as it has for its other smart home devices) soon. A recent update added two-way chat so you can sooth the pets or ward off burglars.

The basic mount and wall mount make it easy to setup at an angle to your liking – the 130-degree field of vision helps – and there's the option to remove it from the mount and use it wirelessly, albeit only for an hour. That could be useful for baby bedtime duties, although we struggle to think of many other applications.

You can download and share videos, should you need to, motion detection works as advertised, and image quality is decent – with a choice of 720p or 1080p maximum resolution depending on your signal strength.

We've split out the Nest Cam IQs separately because the indoor and outdoor variants really are distinct devices and which one you need will depend on where you're putting them. What stands out about these security cameras is the intelligence behind them and the quality of the apps Nest (now owned by Google) has put together.

Video crispness is also great, and this camera can shoot in (compressed) 4K. That means you get a clearer look at everything that's happening, and zooming is actually something that's useful. There's a neat auto-zoom mode here too.

You do need a subscription for a lot of features, like cloud archives and the ability to distinguish between strangers and family members (the camera can identify a person on the free plan, but not who the person is). The Nest Cam IQs are fantastic – but you do need a substantial budget for them.

The older Nest Cam, with the previous design, is still on sale if you need something a little cheaper. You still get 1080p HD streaming, and access to the very intuitive app – just not as many of the bells and whistles.

The Netatmo Welcome was quite ahead of its time as a security camera when it appeared several years ago, and it's still a very viable product. Like the other cameras here, it's a Wi-Fi-connected device that starts recording when it senses movement.

The clever bit is that the camera not only spots that people have entered its 130-degree field of vision, but it will also have a stab at recognising them too. Perhaps more usefully, if someone passes who the camera doesn't know, you get an alert about an "unknown face". You can tell the system who it is (if it's not an intruder), and next time around it should automatically know.

The camera can record video in up to 1080p, which looks perfectly fine on a smartphone screen and won't tax your internet connection too much. Netatmo also allows you to fine tune the settings for each individual user – for example, don't record Abbie, but do record Ben. It's actually pretty smart.

The Nooie wireless doorbell measures 6.7 x 2.4 x 1.6 inches but weighs only 1.94 pounds, so it feels extremely light in your hand. When either installing or removing the doorbell cam on its mount, the body's dimensions also allow for an easy grip.

With an above-average size, it serves as a great visual deterrent since it's easy to spot at a distance. In practice, the doorbell button is also a good size, so there's no issue giving it a press regardless of how big your hands are. The speaker at the bottom of the doorbell cam isn't the loudest, but it's clear enough to communicate from.

Nooie Doorbell Cam Technical Specifications

To serve as a proper technological 24/7 security guard, Nooie offers some impressive specs to keep everything in sight. This wireless doorbell cam uses a 2K resolution to provide crisp video coverage. The 158-degree field of view is smaller than other similarly priced doorbell cams, but it seemed a smaller trade-off for the camera depth and quality.

There was a small blind spot as a result, but the proper placement of the doorbell circumvented this issue almost entirely. By extension, the night vision coverage of up to 49 feet and passive infrared motion detection ensured even more control over my detection zone.

This doorbell cam comes rated at IP65, so it's considered weatherproof. While you won't want to submerge the unit in water, it was able to stand up to turbulent thunderstorms and rain blowback during its testing window.

For those concerned about device theft, Nooie also features an anti-theft siren if the device is removed from its backing. To prevent accidental triggers, you can also disable this protection at any point from settings.

Nooie Wireless Doorbell Battery, Set-Up, and User Experience

Nooie opted for a wireless design for its doorbell cam, so it needed a battery that could provide power for prolonged everyday use. Its doorbell cam utilizes a battery with a 10,000 mAh capacity. In terms of charging, it took a few hours of outlet charging to fill it to the max via the included USB-C cable.

The battery life will fluctuate depending on what settings you opt into. These hinge around the detection radius, so they can be tweaked towards your home or particular concern. Even when opting into the higher drain settings, the battery drain was never severe enough that it made me feel like I needed to opt into a lower-tier.

When integrating a new smart device into your home, it can be tempting to stick with the most common market device. Set-ups for these tend to be the most streamlined, and they do a good job at making the process painless. Even if you haven't heard of Nooie, it's worth noting that they put a lot of effort into the graphical guidance and intuitive functionality.

When you open the box, everything is clearly labeled. The included instructions cover the major bits, but visual add-ons such as a card explaining the angled mount and mounting foam sticker make for useful visual aids.

The Nooie app itself also tries to keep you from getting stuck during the set-up process. If you run into an issue and something isn't working as intended, Nooie made sure to include in-app tips on what to do next. Not having to immediately dip into a manual to troubleshoot was a time-saving user-friendly touch.

Similarly, learning the LED color patterns for both the doorbell and base station makes it easy to discern specific issues.

Placing and Utilizing the Base Station

The Nooie base station serves a variety of useful functions at the cost of an outlet plug. It provides dual-band Wi-Fi amplification, local storage, an ethernet jack, and plays your in-home chimes.

Placement near your router is more optimal if you have any issues connecting wirelessly. If this doesn't help, the included ethernet cable can circumvent connectivity issues by directly connecting to your router. You may also need to make some router setting tweaks if issues continue to occur.

At the side of the base station is its microSD slot. For those interested in local storage, the option to utilize up to 128 GB of space on a microSD provides some immediate benefits.

First off, there's instant freedom from cloud-based subscription models. Plus, if someone were to steal your doorbell cam, this in-home measure keeps your data safely stored. Furthermore, the short recordings don't take up much space, so you don't have to worry about your card filling up rapidly.

In terms of chime ringtones, there's a small handful of options. Nooie offers a total of four default chimes with one downloadable holiday addition. They're mostly forgettable, but they play well from the base station.

Mounting the Nooie Doorbell Cam

To help get your doorbell cam up and positioned perfectly, Nooie included two wall mounts (one flat and one angled fifteen-degree mount), screws (two concrete and two wood screws), and four anchors. The included mount foam sticker also makes it incredibly easy to visualize your placement prior to installation.

After installing your choice mount, attaching the doorbell is a simple matter. With the flat wall mount, I had no issue placing the doorbell cam. However, the fifteen-degree wall mount had a top locking mechanism that would stick.

While this was relatively minor and solved by feel, the added jostling of the device to properly lock and also remove the doorbell proved irksome.

To remove the doorbell, there's a small hole at the bottom of each mount that requires you to insert a small included pin. This releases the lock and allows you to safely remove the doorbell cam.

When you're ready to check in on your doorbell, the Nooie app makes it easy to manage the experience. Once you've selected your doorbell from the camera list and checked its current connection strength, you can either go live or view recordings from the timeline.

From the live view, you can toggle between 2K and HD video depending on your connection. While also in live view, you can record video, take a photo, set off the alarm, speak via your device's mic, and mute the live feed. If you tap the view playback option beneath the icons, you can view prior recordings by date either in a timeline or list view.

If you do run into issues here, these typically are a result of your network strength. These present in the form of a laggy live feed, recordings not playing always, and the rare loss of connection with the doorbell itself. With a faster connection speed, the app works fluidly.

When someone presses your doorbell, the Nooie app will cut to a live call screen with a preview of what the doorbell cam sees. From here, you can answer for two-way talk, end the alert, or respond with a pre-programmed quick response or use a custom one that you've recorded for yourself. If you want to change your current custom quick responses, it's as simple as tapping the respective slot and recording over them.

In practice, the quick response can be immensely helpful if you don't have time to chat. The only unfortunate element is the name character limit for the custom responses is fairly short, so you can't go as detailed as the default messages.

Besides the basic doorbell press, the detection elements on Nooie's doorbell cam allow you to both adjust your battery life as well as any related notifications. The PIR (passive infrared) motion detection works at a default sensitivity of ten feet, but you can adjust it to either three feet or up to twenty feet to tweak your notification frequency. Human-shape detection is activated by default, so you won't have to worry about any simple motion triggering an alert.

During testing, I didn't run into false alerts, but the option to set your detection zone makes it even easier to save battery if you really want to narrow your view. To maximize your battery life, there's also the option to disable the use of PIR motion detection.

As for the actual detections, these get sorted into human detection and doorbell presses within the Nooie inbox.

Installing a security cam can be a bit of a challenge. You've got the power supply, the network cabling, and the physical installation to consider. While internal cams aren't too bad, external network security cameras are often a challenge.

That brings us nicely to the Kami Wire-Free Outdoor Security Camera, an HD wire-free home surveillance system with considerable battery life, PIR motion sensor, and smart device integration. All you need to do is screw it to an external wall---but does it deliver on the promise of wire-free home security?

We've tried a few security cameras over the years, with mixed results. Internal cams are usually okay, but positioning is always tricky when it comes to providing a power source. They invariably ship with short cables, which makes things even tougher.

External cameras are similarly limited. For complete flexibility they typically eschew cables in favor of solar power, but this comes with its own limitations.

Meanwhile, connectivity is often an additional trial. Will your router's current position enable the required range for the camera? Do you need powerline adaptors or a wireless repeater to extend coverage? Is the position of the camera limited by power and networking considerations?

Yeah, it's a minefield.

However, the Kami Wire-Free Outdoor Security Camera is different. As you've already guessed, it's wireless---in every way.

Shipping in a compact box, the Kami includes four 18650 batteries. These are high capacity rechargeable batteries which will last for up to four months, depending on usage. With 2.4Ghz wireless networking built-in, this is a promising alternative to other security cameras that fail to get the "wireless" requirements.

Also in the box, you'll find the camera itself, a plastic base, three screws, anchors, and a mounting plate. The camera can then be placed on the base, which is tightened to secure the camera's position. Use the paired app to gain the best view of the area to be monitored and you're ready to go.

To see what's going on outside, simply open the Kami Home app to view the footage. Various options are available here, from setting alerts to securing access with a PIN or your device's fingerprint reader.

Alerts are particularly useful as they send a notification to your phone when movement is detected. All you do then is tap the notification to view the footage. This can be viewed in portrait and landscape orientation---you can also pinch to zoom in or out.

While the app does nothing out of the ordinary, it is a reliable solution. There is arguably too much focus on upselling the cloud storage facility, however.

This leads us to the key question: cloud storage or local?

Paying for a subscription saves messing about with a microSD card, but obviously means a financial commitment that you may not want. While new users get a month free, this is only available if you sign up for a subscription package.

For everyone else, there's a mere six seconds of time for alert videos, although this can be increased at the cost of battery life. Manually recording footage is always possible, too. Footage can be easily downloaded to your phone with a single tap.

Incredibly for a security camera, the Kami Wire-Free Outdoor Security Camera comes with a key vulnerability.

It's incredibly easy to remove the camera from the wall. In fact, the entire unit has three points of weakness:

The camera can be removed from the mounting plate

The camera can be unscrewed from the universal joint

Batteries and microSD card can be removed by unscrewing the lens

The only sensible option for protection against these risks is positioning the camera out of reach of potential intruders. While the cloud storage option will at least provide the most reliable way to identify the culprit, the lack of locking options makes the Kami Wire-Free Outdoor Security Camera less ideal for external use.

Overall, the Kami Wire-Free Outdoor Security Camera is weatherproof, offers decent HD video 24 hours a day with night vision and a useful mobile app, smart home integration, and up to four months of battery life. It's easy to install, but has some key physical security issues.
