took one look at all the canary symbolism/potential metaphors and i was like I could donnie the SHIT out of this. the fact that they need more air to fly (the thing that puts them apart from humans and makes them useful) is the reason they're so important, you say. fragile birds of the sun, blessed by apollo, forced down into darkness to protect miners YOU SAY

although the metaphor of a canary not understanding its own situation is more applicable to the plot of the oneshot here, considering that the biggest, most important aspect of it is that donnie doesn't know his brothers were cursed at all, from the beginning to the very end. he never finds out, even when he accidentally breaks it. its suffering he cant put a name or words to, and it starts so slow that it feels like a natural progression, which is why it gets past him (and why would someone who is so inexperienced with mystics, who struggles so hard to read other people and deal with his own emotions to boot, who focuses so hard on being liked to the point of changing aspects of himself when faced with disapproval, who is actively being gaslit accidentally and intentionally, ever assume the problem was anything but him?)

but even outside of that? donnie ass bird. to me. GET IN THE DIRT DIRTY BIRD BOY

considering symbolically donnie is very much the canary in the story (or the reader is the canary? the reader is the only one that knows what's wrong from the get-go. or the reader is the miner interpreting the mounting dread from the metaphorical canary? very fun to play around with the metaphor and give it several interpretations im having so much fun) i suppose this is a certified kinnie moment from me. he just like me fr (except the fear is very very real and justified in his case i just have delusions)
