On This Day in 1978...

The ACTWU held strikes against J.P. Stevens in Herald Square, New York. Members of ILGWU Local 23-25 are pictured supporting striking workers. This event in labor history is what later inspired the movie Norma Rae.

Happy Birthday to ILGWU organizer and labor activist Angela Bambace! Bambace was an Italo-Brazilian-American labor union organizer. She worked for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) for over fifty years and she was the first Italian American woman to be elected Vice-President of the ILGWU in 1956!
