BeatO Takes the Lead in Addressing India's Diabetes Epidemic
The certificate program aims to solve the three shortfalls in diabetic care awareness, accessibility, and affordability.
This silent diabetic epidemic has penetrated every nook and corner of the country, presenting a formidable battle for India to overcome. Compounding the issue is the fact that more than 80% of the population resides in Tier 3 & 4 towns and villages, where access to adequate healthcare facilities is a major concern. Tertiary healthcare services are primarily concentrated in Tier 1 & 2 cities, leaving a substantial gap in healthcare accessibility and affordability.
According to the latest report from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 100 million Indians have been diagnosed with diabetes, with a significant number of pre-diabetics adding to the alarming statistics. Regrettably, India has earned the infamous title of being the "Diabetes Capital of the World" due to the escalating prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits.
That yawning gap between demand and supply, will hopefully be bridged when the first batch of 50 students commencing their journey to receive a degree Certificate Course in Diabetes Education on July 15, 2023, graduate with their degrees. A joint collaboration between BeatO, India's leading diabetic care and management platform and the International Institute for Health Management Research (IIHMR), is a prime example of the future of healthcare. Collaborations among different specialised healthcare providers holds the key to providing awareness, accessibility, and affordability for millions of India, especially in the Tier 2, 3 & 4 cities. The need of the hour is to bring access closer to patients, and this is the first step in the direction.
Commenting on the importance of the course, Gautam Chopra - CEO, and founder, BeatO said, "India is facing a severe shortage of skilled medical workers, particularly in small towns and villages where maximum number of Diabetic patients reside. To address this concern, BeatO in collaboration with IIHMR is thrilled to offer the first of its kind Certificate Course in Diabetes Education. This initiative represents our commitment to giving back to society and help individuals in the first steps in changing the dynamics of Diabetes in Tier 2/3/4 cities. With this certificate course, our vision is to empower individuals with the required knowledge and skills to manage diabetes effectively. It will also provide them sustainable employment opportunities. Together, we can build a healthier society, where people are more informed about diabetes, and contribute towards the growth and progress of our nation."
These newly trained diabetic care educators will augment India's diabetic health infrastructure and make diabetic care more accessible and affordable. The course will equip healthcare professionals, such as paramedical staff, nurses, dietitians, and caretakers, with the essential skills and hands-on training in hospitals and clinics.
"Designed in collaboration with an innovative and leading diabetic care and management platform like BeatO, upcoming healthcare enthusiasts will be offered a comprehensive peek into diabetic care. Bridging the gap between academia and the medical industry, this course will offer pursuing students insights stemming from real-time data and conditions, enabling healthcare professionals to chart new territories in diabetic education, propelling us closer to a world where diabetes is better understood, better managed, and, ultimately, better prevented," saidSutapa B. Neogi, Director of IIHMR-Delhi.
With renowned and practicing diabetologists curating the course structure and acting as faculty, this course will incorporate the latest advancements in medical research, practical guidelines, and patient-centric approaches, empowering people with diabetes, their caretakers and healthcare professionals. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the field of Diabetes care. Through this course, BeatO is leading the charge to bring about a meaningful and rapid resolution to the challenges posed by diabetes in India.

With rising incidences of disruptive dust storms across North India and increased abnormal weather phenomena, many cities and suburbs are facing a potent threat to life and activity in a manner that is nothing short of an epidemic. Air pollution is a major cause of life threatening diseases such as stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and chronic and acute respiratory syndromes such as asthma. Ironically, major metropolitan centers such as Mumbai and Delhi, which are the most populous in the country, are also the world’s most polluted. “World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that Delhi recorded Particulate Matter 2.5 levels at 143 micrograms per cubic meter, which is 14 times higher than the recommended safe limit. Surrounding areas such as Jaipur and Chandigarh also have PM 2.5 levels well above safe limits. These smaller air particles are particularly dangerous for health because they can enter the lungs more deeply, resulting in asthma, respiratory system inflammation, lung cancers and other breathing issues”, said Dr. Goutam Sadhu, IIHMR University, Jaipur Common air pollutants such as mercury, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide and nitrogen compounds have a direct impact on water bodies including rivers like the Ganga. Most of these pollutants arise from industrial pollution and burning of carbon fuels. Meteorologists explain that the recent dust storms were caused by an unusually strong thunderstorm condition that formed overnight, generating high speed winds that may have picked up dust and smog from already high levels in northern India’s atmosphere. Air pollution worsens during cooler temperatures because cold air tends to settle down and reduce ambient air quality. Globally, 91 percent of the population lives in areas where air pollution standards are unsafe. 23 percent of all deaths can be traced to some preventable environmental risk factor. Young children, women, outdoor workers and the elderly are the vulnerable groups to be impacted by decelerating air quality. In India, indoor smoke through animal waste fuels or firewood is a serious factor affecting the lives of a significant chunk of the population in India’s rural hinterlands. “People can be seen covering their nose and mouth with ordinary surgical masks in the belief that they would stay protected from air pollution. Having an air particle filter or, in lieu, indoor plants is advisable. It is also advisable that you quit smoking during this season. Lots of vegetables, legumes, nuts and lean fats help one counter the effects of particulate matter. Asthma patients and susceptible individuals should avoid going out”, said Veena Nair Sarkar, IIHMR University, Jaipur. ANI : 22nd. June,18
INCREASE OF AIR POLLUTION LEVELS IS HARMING CITY DWELLERS IN INDIA : With rising incidences of disruptive dust storms across North India and increased abnormal weather phenomena, many cities and suburbs are facing a potent threat to life and activity in a manner that is nothing short of an epidemic.

Globally, tobacco use results in death for 50 percent of its users, who account for over nine percent of the world’s population today. According to data available from the last National Family Health Survey in India, 45 percent of all men and seven percent of women in the age group of 15-49 are tobacco users. Although tobacco use has been linked with a wide spectrum of illnesses including cancer, lung disease, diabetes, eye disease and arthritis, about 12 percent of all deaths from heart disease can be attributed to tobacco use including second hand smoke. In fact, tobacco use is the second most significant cause of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) after hypertension. CVD itself accounts for about 31 percent of all deaths worldwide. The WHO describes tobacco use as an epidemic associated with rising stress levels, unhealthy eating habits, work hours and sleep routines. About seven million people succumb to diseases directly attributable to tobacco use of whom, about 900,000 are non-smokers regularly exposed to second hand smoke. Cigarette smoke contains at least 4000 chemicals, about 250 of which are definitely known to be toxic and 50 are known to cause cancer. “Smoking damages the lining of the arteries causing a build-up of fatty compounds which narrows down and causes pressure on blood flowing through them. Further, the carbon monoxide present in smoke lowers the amount of oxygen in the blood. This leads to the heart having to pump harder to maintain required oxygen levels in the body. Nicotine that is inhaled with cigarette smoke induces the production of adrenaline which, again, makes the heart beat faster and harder. Tobacco also causes the blood to clot faster and such clots can block passageways to regular flow, causing pressure on the heart to increase” said Dr PR Sodani, IIHMR University, Jaipur. In India, tobacco causes more than a million deaths annually. Tobacco kills half of its users and for every life lost, there are thirty living with a serious tobacco related illness. The economic burden of disease and death caused by tobacco surpasses health expenditure of the national and state governments. “The WHO reports that 80 percent of the world’s 1.1 billion smokers reside in low to middle income countries where the disease burden due to non-communicable and communicable diseases is already quite high. Those succumbing to tobacco are usually the bread earners of the household and their passing leaves the family without a source of income. The family may also spend a lot by way of out of pocket expenditure on healthcare and may be pushed to economic despair,” said Dr. Preetha G.S., International Institute of Health Management Research, New Delhi. Employing surveillance is one of the key methods to measure the impact of disease as well as take corrective action. Pregnant women and young children face stunted growth of the fetus and the self, respectively, when exposed to second hand smoke. Although, out rightly quitting tobacco, is the best way to save oneself from the illnesses associated with this regressive habit, society needs to understand that smokers need help to quit. Graphic warnings on cigarette packets have helped smokers quit in countries as varied as Brazil, Canada, Singapore and Thailand. Mass media campaigns have also been effective in bringing awareness about the hazards of tobacco use on the individual and the family. ANI : 30th. May,18
