Sometimes violence is the answer when the question is how do we eradicate hierarchies /rp
Technoā€™s representation of anarchy in the second attack on lā€™manburg
Edit: I've moved blogs to @considermygenderminecrafted if u want more dsmp things
I'm going to try to explain why saying techno misrepresents anarchism because he uses violence isn't necessarily enough in and of itself.
In the original post I give a brief run down of the ways in which techno does use anarchist principals. In this post I'm gonna explain why the attack on l'manburg isn't 'not anarchist'.
A few disclaimers. Firstly, I'm not a trained political theorist, this could all be wrong, im going to link to the main source of the points in this post in the reblog. Secondly, I'M NOT ADOVOCATING ANYTHING I'M ANALYSING MINECRAFT ROLEPLAY THROUGH A PARTICULAR POLITICAL LENS.
Pre-ramble context.
Techno tried to establish an anarchist commune peacefully outside of the country and government. He attempted to retire (tho he didn't tell people) away from the originally violence and move on when the government was re-established when the initial attack was unsuccessful. When he was eventually hunted down and publicly executed without trial whilst his friend was placed under house arrest and had his house raided, he formulated a plan to destroy the l'manburg government.
Before the attack, the citizens were given a chance to either leave and establish their own place, to prepare if they wanted to or for the government officials to give up their power voluntarily. No one needed to die in that attack, the purpose was specifically to cause property damage (as indicated by the fact only jack lost canon lives when he fought techno directly).
Violence was not the c!technos first act as an actual anarchist, nor was it specifically done out of a need to hurt people, it was a politically motivated attack.
So what was the political motivations behind it? Why can this be considered in-line with certain interpretations of anarchist principals?
Violence
ONCE AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO RE-ITERATE Iā€™M NOT ADVOCATING ANYTHING I AM ANALYSING MINECRAFT ROLEPLAY THROUGH A POLITICAL LENS.
Anarchy is a leftist* political system which advocates for the annihilation of (unjust) hierarchies. I can't get into the full details of anarchism because i will be here forever but in this instance we need to look at an anarchist understanding of violence and hierarchies.
You're probably familiar with certain leftist slogans (?) such as 'Eat the rich' or 'ready the guillotine'. These phrases reference violent overthrow-al of the system (Eat the rich means kill them and redistribute their resources to those without food. When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich). Not every anarchist advocates for the violent overthrow-al of the government but some of them do.
Anarchism doesnā€™t disagree with violence as a means.
In an anarchist** understanding of politics, arguing for non-violence is impossible, because politics is the distribution of the power to commit violence against people. Violence in this case can take the form of police, boarder enforcement (exile), legal enforcement (house arrest), deprivation of food or health care or even the death penalty (the execution). Politics is deciding who gets to exert control over whom. Direct action in anarchism can include violence, because it acknowledges all politics is violence.
This is not to say all violence committed is equal, nor is it say that all violence is allowed in anarchism, it is to say, however, that anarchists are not opposed to violence.
In c!techno's understanding, to say that 'violence is never the answer' is useless because violence is constantly being committed due to the fact there is a government, and a hierarchy. The times he's tried to not use violence has lead to him having violence committed against him and the people he cares for with no way for him to be safe. The only way for him to remain safe, and to prevent more violence from being committed, in his mine, was to entirely annihilate lā€™manburgā€™s property and land.
Techno also uses the friend enemy distinction as an anarchist** would.
As discussed before, politics is deciding who gets to have power to commit violence against who. In anarchism, the political enemy (the person who violence can be committed against) is anyone who upholds and reinforces hierarchies. Because the political enemy is based off of how people act, and not who they are, people can denounce their previous beliefs and stop acting in the ways they were, and anarchist will leave them alone. They will no longer be the political enemy.
When techno tells Ranboo to leave because Ranboo isnā€™t fighting for lā€™manburg, he is using this specific friend enemy distinction. When they warn lā€™manburg of the act they give people to opportunity to denounce and leave. By doing this they demonstrate that violence committed against people follows the leftist model of the political friend/enemy distinction.
In conclusion, Technoā€™s violence*** doesnā€™t misrepresent anarchism.
Anarchism can be non-violent, and in itself, it could be considered the least violent system because it seeks to eradicate power distribution over others altogother, but it isnā€™t inherently non-violent, nor does it disagree with property damage*** as a means of dismantling harmful systems.
*usually, in a vacuum some people consider anarchism to be neutral, and anarcho-capitalism exists but that not usually considered anarchist, and we donā€™t exist in a vacuum. Itā€™s kinda too complicated to get into here but in this post it is considered a leftist political theory.
**there are so many versions of anarchism. As with everything leftist no one agrees with anyone ever, but this one anarchist way of interpreting things.
***At least second time round after the pogtopia arc
sources will be added later so tumblr doesnā€™t eat this because it hates links
Here's another about techno and anarchy! More Specifically why he's not a hypocrite
