Incorrect Order Chapter 5 (Nessian AU)
Tumblr media
A/N: Do inform me if you wanna be added/removed from the taglist! If you happen to find my storyline similar to another fic or one of yours, I'm extremely sorry, I might've just not known. All characters belong to the author Sarah J. Mass. Enjoy!
Summary: Don't first impressions always affect the way you see someone? Well, what more with the Nesta Archeron? Nesta meets Cassian at few unexpected places and to say it didn't go well was a major understatement. Certain circumstances make them become enemies to tolerable company to friends to lovers.
Trigger Warnings: Swearing, an angry Nesta and a heart-broken Cassian
2094 words | Incorrect Order Masterlist | Read on AO3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nesta had never been one for small talk but in his presence she spoke as if she was excellent in small talk. They spoke of all unimportant things and ended up forgetting the important stuff; their names. Again.
Feyre sent an invitation for her first anniversary party as she did for every other occasion. The only thing different was that Nesta never bothered to pay heed to her invitations before. After the day in the alley, however, she decided she was going to turn over a new leaf. This was her first step.
She checked her reflection on the side-mirror. She tried to keep her outfit and make-up as simple as possible. She only wore a white ruffled-sleeved blouse with a black pencil skirt. Her hair was braided into a coronet. She looked good, but not as good as she’ll look if she took her own time to do a detailed make-over. She let out a breath and braced herself for the inevitable little chat with her sisters.
“Nesta?” a bewildered voice breathed. She whirled around to face her younger sister, Elain, looking up at her, a small smile playing about her lips. “You’re here,” she said and flung her arms around Nesta. Nesta automatically wrapped her arms around Elain’s smaller frame. Eventually, Elain pulled back.
“No offense, but I really thought you wouldn’t be coming,” Elain said.
Nesta felt as if the smile on her face couldn't be wiped out for the next few hours. “Honestly, I didn't think I'd come either. But here I am.”
She nodded and pulled Nesta to the garden the party was held at.
“I did this,” Elain said. “This garden, I planted and groomed all this.”
“No wonder why it looks so beautiful,” Nesta replied.
She flushed and said contemplatively, “You're so different now, Nesta.”
“I hope in a good way. Where's Feyre?”
“Let's go meet everyone first.”
Nesta shook her head. “I— I need to talk to both of you before I meet everyone else. ”
Elain hesitated then said, “Can you wait in that room? I'll fetch Feyre and come.”
Nesta nodded and headed to the door at the end of the garden Elain pointed at. The room was classy, much like the exterior of the house. She was struck by the simple yet grand theme of Feyre's house. She knew he and his brothers were rich but she just didn't understand the extent of their wealth. Till now.
“What are you thinking?” Feyre wasn't the type to blindly trust people. It took more than coming for her anniversary to persuade her that Nesta's intentions were good.
Nesta faced Feyre, her youngest sister, who stood before her, gorgeous yet fierce in a simple but elegant blue gown. She shrugged, “Just thinking that I'm glad my sisters were well-provided when I couldn't take care of them.”
Feyre’s face didn’t change, she just gestured towards the couches. “Have a seat,” she said.
Nesta sat down, “You both look splendid,” she said. Feyre said that the gown was a gift, Elain thanked Nesta and offered the same.
Nesta cleared her throat. “I need to tell the both of you something. Many things, actually.”
Elain nodded encouragingly. Feyre said, “Go on.”
So Nesta spoke. She apologised. For how she wasn't there to fulfill the role of an elder sister. For how she failed to attend Feyre's marriage and many other occasions. For all the rude words she spoke to them. For shunning them. She apologised for being self consumed. For everything else.
She also promised. To try harder. To become better. To be a good sister and sister-in-law. To be with them at all times, especially when they needed her. And they listened.
“I know these words aren't enough, but I'll try to make it so,” she finished, her hands clasped with both her sisters on her sides.
“You said you'll try, Nesta. We will too,” Feyre said.
“I see a very bright future ahead of us,” Elain said.
Nesta couldn't help the tears anymore. She folded her arms around her sisters and tucked them close. Her sisters. Her beloved sisters she now knew she'd do anything to protect.
“I see a very bright future too,” Nesta said.
Nesta pulled back after what felt like an hour and looked at her sisters' tear-streaked faces.
“I love you,” the three of them said simultaneously. Nesta giggled. Elain laughed. Feyre stared.
Nesta gently brushed the tears from both of their cheeks. “I don't want to see any of you crying.”
She hugged them again, willing the hug to convey everything she didn't say out loud.
“Now, now, enough snuggling. We've got a party to attend and people to meet, remember?” Feyre said.
***
Cassian was anxious. He had always hoped Nesta, his sister-in-law, would come for the gatherings they had; be it family dinners, or birthday parties, or the random meetings they had when they just got tipsy and played games. He hadn't seen her face-to-face before. All he knows about Nesta are from the descriptions from Feyre and Elain. That, too, was minimal. One of them would quickly change the topic to something pleasant the moment traces of an emotional breakdown were visible. Every time he hoped, he was let down. She never came. He vowed he would stop hoping and instead just go about and act as if she didn't exist. But that never happened. Every time his family met, his treacherous heart would start hoping only to have a chunk of it fall off when she failed to attend. Today was no different.
Then there’s the woman who he’d been talking to the whole afternoon. He was a tangled up mess of emotions and doubt and confusion. He had been sort-of pining after Nesta. She was exactly the person he’d like. Apparently she was drop-dead gorgeous, witty and… feral. Feyre said that. Feral. She’d be someone worth seeing. She was totally a worthy opponent. It’d be fun. But the other woman? Mother above, she was ethereal. More than ethereal, in fact. Words can't contain what he had to say about her.
He was damn near killing Az for calling him right when they were about to exchange names. He really can't believe he was a hairsbreadth away from knowing her before it was all ripped away. Now they were back to square one. He didn't know anything about her.
Azriel clapped him on his back so hard that he almost stumbled and fell. Or probably that was because he was too distracted. “All good Somm?”
“Mmm-hmm,” he replied noncommittally. He busied his hands with re-rinsing the champagne flutes and wiping them clean again. He did this two times already. Still.
“Mood is sour today, Cass?” Az teased, mock-frowning.
“Nah,” Cassian said wryly, “it's as sweet as honeydew. Especially today, when my chat got interrupted.” He glared at Azriel.
“Now, now, that is a story for another day. For now though, I think I've got something that can cheer up your brooding self.”
“What is it?” he mumbled.
Az grinned. “Nesta is here.”
***
Feyre and Elain took Nesta on a quick tour around the house. Feyre’s paintings were hung on the walls throughout the whole house. Nesta grimly noticed that there wasn't a single picture of her. There were even paintings of their father whose heart had long stopped beating. But none of hers. If only she didn’t push herself away, Nesta would’ve been a happy part of her sisters’ lives.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. Feyre took her hand in hers. Elain tucked herself to Nesta’s side, wrapping her arms over her slender shoulders.
Nesta already met Mor, a stunning blonde woman, and Amren, a slightly intimidating and short person. Now she only had to meet her brother-in-laws.
“Let’s go meet the boys!” Elain said brightly.
We walked back to the garden. Feyre seemed to get more and more elated the closer we got to the garden. Huh. Probably falling in love would do that to someone. Anyway, as long as her sisters were happy.
They stepped through the doorway. The garden was decorated with more banners and streamers hung on the back of chairs and on the low branches. Again, it looked opulent in a simple way.
There were three men in the centre of the garden, gathered around a table. They all were slightly similar, broad shouldered, tapered waists, muscular limbs. Three of them wore formal shirts and pants clinging to their frames. The one in the middle was Rhysand, she supposed. She smirked internally. Of course Feyre ended up with this guy. She's got a good taste. Must've gotten it from the oldest sister.
The one on the right, though. His figure felt familiar. Very, very familiar. She couldn't quite put a finger on it yet.
“The one on the left is Azriel, the one on the right is Cassian,” Feyre said, and Nesta nodded.
The boys must be really engrossed with their conversation. They hadn't noticed the three of them yet.
The guy she thought was familiar threw his head back and laughed. She gasped. That laugh. She'd know the laugh anywhere. Indeed, when he angled his face so that she could get a glimpse, she knew she was done for. She swallowed with much difficulty.
“I need to go,” she said quickly.
“Go? But— but we haven't cut the cake yet. It's still early. We've got lots more fun stuff,” Elain said.
“You said you'll try, Nesta. Only, this doesn't feel like 'trying',” Feyre said.
They sounded… hurt.
Mother above, I'm doing this wrong.
“Nesta?” Elain asked. “Is something wrong?”
“Yeah,” Feyre added, “you look pale.”
“Y-yeah it's f-fine. Kinda. My head hurts,” she said, accidentally clutching her stomach. “I-I mean, yeah my head hurts. Very badly. I gotta go.” She looked helplessly at both of them. “I'm so sorry. I really am. It's just— I think I need rest. I'll recompense. Probably dinner in three days?” They both shared a look and agreed.
Nesta was already walking away. “Love you both,” she threw over her shoulder.
***
“Feyre!” Rhys called. He beckoned Feyre and Elain to the table. He didn't see Nesta.
Cassian lightly kissed Feyre on her cheek once they made their way to the table and said, “Gorgeous as always. Happy anniversary!”
Feyre grinned, but it showed traces of disappointment.
He frowned. “Hey, what's wrong?”
She just shook her head and mumbled, “Nesta.” Rhys's face hardened. His brother was never fond of Nesta. He said that she was why Feyre was always worried.
“Where's Nesta?” Az asked, craning his neck to see behind farther.
“She… left,” Elain pointed, revealing a figure disappearing behind the gates. A figure he knew all too well. Shitshitshitshit.
His head snapped back to his brothers. “That is Nesta?” he damn near shouted.
Rhys scowled, “Yeah.”
No wonder why she's so beautiful, he thought dumbly before running after her with a quick “I'll be back.”
***
Nesta was wrong. In all her happiness of being reunited with her sisters, she completely forgot how even a small thing can break one's smile. She felt like she couldn't breathe. She kept her calm demeanour, but inside, she was a raging storm of emotions.
One step in front of the other, she kept reminding herself.
She kept walking. Even when she heard footsteps. Even when the steps got louder. Even as he got close enough to cease running.
But not when he called her name. She halted. Locked up her emotions. She knew she shouldn't but she turned around anyway.
“What do you want?” she snapped.
“Nesta,” he breathed. She tried to hold back her shudder. It was from the night air, she told herself.
“If you have nothing to say, do let me know. I'm not going to wait forever,” she said. Harsher than she intended to. But she didn't care, at least, that's what she told herself.
Cassian winked, “I'm honored you came, sweetheart. I'll pass the credit to my influence on you. ”
She ground her teeth against the truth threatening to fall off her lips. Yes, I came here because you made me happy. And I thought that if I tried, as I did with you, I can rebuild my relationship with my sisters.
***
Cassian did something stupid. He grabbed her hand. Her eyes snapped to his, burning with anger. Like the day they first met.
He gave her a crooked grin that he knew would drive her mad. Well, more than she already was. He tilted his head to the garden, “The party is that way, love.”
She snatched back her hand at continued walking. Like a fool, he followed. “I spoke to my sisters. Told them I won't be staying tonight. And that we'll have dinner in three day's time. Does that satisfy you? Now, can you stop following me?”
“Something's wrong. What's wrong, Nes?”
“One,” she ground out, “don't call me that. Two, I'm a grown-ass woman; I know how to take care of myself. I don't need a babysitter.”
“You did. That day,” he said quietly.
She whirled on him, “Is this you taking back favours? Because I'm not interested. You want money? Take it. Tell me your price and fucking take it! Don't tread on my heels because you helped me, okay? I've got way better things to do.” She paused, “And don't follow me, Cassian.”
She turned and stalked away.
You want money? Take it. 'Take it.' As if he were a beggar, asking for alms. As if they weren't laughing at each other's jokes not more than an hour ago. As if he didn't spend a week taking care of her as if she were a part of his soul. Maybe she was.
But that was before, Cassian thought as his heart cleaved into two perfect halves. No— it smashed to a million tiny pieces.
He waited till Nesta was out of his line of sight. He turned and walked back to the garden, leaving his heart behind.
Note
Hi there, me again, if I read the rules correctlyyou said we could do a separate ask for a separate game. If I read incorrectlyplease just ignore this, if not if my first ask wasn't to much I'd love to ask for an ikerev matchup as well! I'm bi, female (she/her) sagittarius sun, virgo rising, libra moon, ENFT. I'm 5'2, chubby/curvy w/ great boobs, I have longer  brunette hair w/ peekaboo highlights (they've been every color, but currently pink), brown eyes, glasses/contacts, 7 piercings & 26 tattoos. I'm very empathetic (sometimes to a fault) and have sever anxiety and depression. It takes me awhile to warm up around new people and be myself. I often feel intimidated in big social settings, such as parties, and often use alcohol for some liquid courage to help me let loose and be me in those situations. I've suffered some emotional and mental abuse at the hands of a step parent which has left me with some trauma and triggers; people raising their voice at me or making quick movements toward me or in my direction usually result in me crying and secluding myself for awhile. Oh and I have daddy issues, thanks absent father. That said I also don't do great with authority, I hate being told what to do, and I hate being told no. I can put up with a lot of shit, but eventually it usually becomes a 'straw that broke the camels back' situation and I fly off the handle and then break down. I am also extremely generous and do all I can to help my friends and family when they need it. I have some self confidence issues from weight gain, and I usually feel my best when I'm dolled up with my makeup on and hair done, usually with a dress and heels. I'm a Ravenclaw thats hates to read, but I love learning & know tons of trivia; like I know so many random facts about so many things from history, to movies, to graveyards, and much more. I often correct people on things, which some perceive as me belittling them, but its never my intention I'm just trying to share my knowledge and trying to help them. I am very creative I love crafting; resin art, macrame, cross stich, those are just some of my favorite things to do art wise, I also enjoy coloring books. I love to laugh and think I'm pretty funny, I usually have a dark sense of humor, if you don't like humor we won't vibe together, and if you can't make me laugh we will not be a good relationship match. I like to go to the bar and do karaoke, it's one thing I've learned I'mvery good at. It took me about 2 years, but I've since learned to be confident with my singing and now its one of my favorite things to do. I drink, obviously, gin and tonic is my favorite. I also smoke, I love my hookah, and I've had my medical card for about a year and it's done wonders for my insomnia and cramps. For about 2 years I've been getting severe cramps and stomach pains, and after 5 er trips in a month they didn't find anything, its still a mystery but at least the bud helps the pain. l'm very into the witchy aesthetic; my style is either very Stevie Nicks, pinup, or 2009 emo/scene depending on the day. I collect animal skulls and bone, taxidermy, crystals, and plants; I also practice the craft & love to make spell jars for people. I love tarot and really enjoy doing it. I live for Halloween & enjoy all things macabre! My favorite show is That 70's Show and if I could live in a replica of the Forman's house that would be my dream. I am also very sex positive and rather adventurous in bed. I'm a brat and a voyeur, I'll get down with just about anything. My love language is giving and receiving gifts. I put alot of thought into holidays like Christmas, I plan months in advance to make sure I get everyone the perfect gift; but I also will sometimes see something that just reminds me of someone and have to get it for them. That is all I can think of right now to add about myself. I'd love 4 and/or 10 for the prompt part. And again thank you for doing these, I'm such a ho for them, and again I'm sorry its long.
I match you with
Edgar!
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for requesting 🥰🥰! I’m sorry this took so long, but here it is! I hope you enjoy it ❤️! I Hope you don’t mind the sprinkle of angst in the second ask.😅
I was thinking Ray at first, but I ended up going with Mr smooth, since Ray is too predictable after Nap.
Edgar is known among the red army officers as the person who will make you feel safe, especially during your first encounters with them, before you find out they’re all dorks.  What he doesn’t expect is how at home he feels when the two of you are together. He never feels like he’s being judged when he’s around you and he lets himself go, despite the indoctrination by Claudius that he should always keep people at a distance to avoid being viewed as weak.
Not long after the two of you met, he decides to take you out along with Kyle for a drink, to help you get more accustomed to Cradle and its people. When you realize how much Kyle loves to drink, you follow suite, the two of you very quickly getting tipsy. Edgar laughs at the two of you for a bit, happy to see a new side of you as you allow yourself to grow more comfortable with them. Eventually he leads the two of you outside of the pub and arranges for a carriage to take you all back to headquarters, trying his hardest to tame the both of you.
He absolutely loves it when you sing to him, especially after a particularly hard day of work. He relaxes at the sound of your voice, often drifting off. It touches him more than he would like to admit when he finds you’re still there when he wakes up.
You are a light in his life and he wants to give back in kind, often dedicating his days off entirely to you. He loves giving you gifts, or surprising you with a romantic dinner to show his appreciation to you, for being there and understanding him.
While he doesn’t have the creativity to participate in most of your hobbies, he loves to watch you do it. The amount of passion you show for your art, the way your eyes light up when you’re working, is a picture perfect moment that he could look at for hours.
Prompt 4: Meet cute:
You couldn’t stop fidgeting as you stood outside the Red Army Headquarters, waiting for Kyle to fetch someone to help you. After you told him about burglars breaking into your house he insisted he get one of the officers to help you, despite you doubts. It was hard not to worry as you considered the prospect of having to turn to Jonah for help, knowing how hard he could be to communicate with, capable officer or not.
When Kyle finally emerged, it wasn’t Jonah walking next to him, but a man you didn’t recognize.
“Sorry for the wait. He’s not easy to find.” The man stood a few heads higher than you but his softer features and aura helped to make him quite welcoming. You begun to relax at his presence, wondering if he was as smooth as he seemed.
“Edgar Bright, at your service.” He offered you a gloved hand, a soft smile playing on his lips. His grip was soft but secure. He was smooth.
“Kyle filled me on the details but I’ll need a statement from you as well.” You tensed up, the idea of an interrogation being especially daunting considering you didn’t know much more than they did.
“No need to worry, it’s simply protocol. You can trust we will find whoever did this without any turbulence.” There was something very reassuring about him. Something that makes you think everything will be all right.
“Thank you.”
 The two of you left Kyle behind, retreating to Edar’s room to discuss the details of the investigation. After he poured two cups of tea he took the seat opposite you, as if the two of you were about to chat about the weather.
“Could you give me the details of what happened? It would be very helpful to hear it straight from the source.” You took a sip before starting with your statement, hoping to calm your nerves.
“I don’t know much more than you do. I was out for work most of the day and when I came back the place was a mess and many valuables were missing.” he seemed to have switched to work mode, completely focused on you.
“What time did you leave for work that day? And when did you return” he scribbled down on a piece of paper, his hand practically moving on its own.
“I left around 8 and came back around 6, I think.” When he put the pen down his attitude returned to relaxed gentleman status.
“I will start with asking the people who might have been present at the scene. I’ll get back to you once I’ve made some progress.” The conversation was over but you found it hard to leave. It didn’t feel right letting one man do the investigation on his own, despite it being his job. It was your house that had been rambled after all.
“I want to help as well. I know my way around the area, I can get in touch with some people.” His eyes widened, seemingly taken aback for the first time that day. He quickly composed himself, smiling again. You noticed something different about it now. Something in his expression told you he was more interested than before.
“I wouldn’t say no to a lady.” You smiled for the first time after the incident.
“Let’s get going then.”
 Prompt 10: Admission Of Feelings.
You continued working on the investigation for the next few weeks, the two of you growing closer by the day.
“There don’t seem to be any witnesses, but it’s unlikely no one was present. The break in happened in the middle of the day.” He rested his head on his chin, not touching the parfait sitting in front of him.
“Maybe they were there but didn’t notice anything. It’s not hard for a professional to pick a lock discreetly.” They two of you sat in silence for some time, both lost in your own theories of what happened that day.
He must have realized your worries, turning on his comfort face.
“We’ll find them. Don’t worry.” Usually you found his words comforting, but you couldn’t keep the frustration from your voice when you looked up at him.
“Realistically speaking, it’s probably not going to happen. They made a clean escape and left nothing behind. You don’t need to baby me, I can put two and two together.” Despite the harshness of your tone, you found him smiling, after the initial surprise wore off.
“You never cease to amaze me.” He opened his mouth to say something, but the words never left him, his eyes turning to the window. He was up and out of the café before you could ask what he had seen.
“What the-“when you looked in the direction of the culprit, you shot up, following after him.
A man stood outside your door, seemingly fighting with the door. When he noticed the two of you approaching him, he dropped his bags, taking off before you could reach him.
“Stop!” Edgar run after him, his speed taking you by surprise, making it hard to catch up.
The man took a sudden turn, heading towards the narrow alleys of Central Quarter, giving you an important disadvantage in the chase.
Your legs ached and your heart was threatening to burst out of your chest. When you thought you couldn’t keep going, you rounded a corner to find Edgar, sitting on top of the man, pinning him in place. If he was tired from the chase, it didn’t show.
“I suppose I don’t need to ask if it was you who broke in a few weeks ago?” his gaze was cold and his grip was tight on the man’s shoulders.
“I- I just- I-it wasn’t me!” Edgar ignored him, turning towards you. Something flickered in his eyes, but loud footsteps coming your way didn’t let him act on whatever it was.
“The Jack? Sir, what happened? We heard the commotion and came to investigate.” A handful of Red Army soldiers stood in front of you, their eyes switching between Edgar and the man under him.
“Take this man back to headquarters. I will interrogate him later.” Edgar pulled the man up, pinning his hands behind his back.
“Yes sir!” when the men led the thief away there was silence. Edgar’ kept his head low, not looking you in the eye as he tried to calm his breathing, the adrenaline of the chase slowly fading away. You knew you should be happy the man had been caught, but something was wrong in the atmosphere. You weren’t sure if you should speak up, or let him ride whatever it was out. He didn’t give you time to think on it, finally walking toward you. His hands were shaking when he reached out to touch your shoulders, a mixture of frustration and worry in his eyes.
“You…. Why…” you weren’t sure what to say, so you put your arms around him instead, hoping it would offer him some comfort. You stayed like that for some time, until his hands stopped shaking.
“I didn’t want you to see me like this.” His words were muffled by the fabric of your shirt. When he lifted his head again, something inside him seemed to snap.
“You shouldn’t have followed me. What if something happened? You could have gotten hurt.” He looked away, his eyes shut tight. You wondered what image was going through his head to cause him so much pain. You cupped his face, forcing him to face you.
“Edgar, look at me.” And he did. The sight of you seemed to calm him down.
“Nothing’s going to happen to me. I’m right here.” It took some time for the words to register, but when they did his face moved closer to you. You encouraged him, pulling him closer, your lips connected in a brief kiss. When he pulled away he took a step back, as if scared he had hurt you.
“I-I’m sorry.” You moved closer, smiling up at him.
“There’s nothing to apologize for. Except maybe pulling away.” You laughed. When he realized you might feel the same way he took your hands in his.
“You’re an amazing woman.” He paused to gather his breath before meeting your gaze again.
“If the thought wouldn’t be appalling, could I see more of you, outside of work?” you couldn’t keep the laughter inside.
“Appalling? Edgar, do you think I would kiss someone I find appalling?” you pulled him back in, hoping to get your point across.
“I’ll never get enough of this.” His smile was brighter than you’d ever seen it.
“I’ll hold you to that. Because we’re just getting started.” The moon was bright above you as you laughed, your happiness overflowing.
Welcome back to being single (Part I)
Tumblr media
How to survive being single AU
Word count: 1,6k
“If he doesn’t get over the backstabbing, career-ruiner mess that woman is, I hope at least he chokes on this,” says Jane handing Mark a breast-shaped cake and closing the door behind her with a loud thud. Mark rolls eyes amused and ignores the fact somewhere in the house Tyler is bragging about successfully setting a Tinder account for Sungjae.
"T, where should I put this?" the man asks, dodging a bunch of balloons scattered around as he walks through the living room, where his girlfriend and M are hanging a gold streamer backdrop.
“On the table, babe” Tara says, her voice rising just enough for Daniel to come out the kitchen.
"Seriously, Jane, a boob cake?" He scoffs as Mark walks past him "Did you perhaps hire a hooker as well?" His nose scrunches up in disgust “That’s the only thing missing in this stereotypically heterosexual party. Tyler even got him a Tinder account "
There’s a forced laugh and Tyler Lee materializes, eyebrows up and smug smirk clinging to the corner of his lips
"What’s wrong with Tinder?" He asks, though his question is not meant to be answered because he goes on “Sungjae just needs to fuck Ashleigh out of his system” He says naturally, causing Jane and Mark to wince.
"You can’t create a lasting bond over an app, it’s impersonal" M offers quietly, his words barely audible for Tyler who is standing next to him.
"Not everybody is looking to create a bond with some stranger on the internet, sometimes people just want to fuck" Tyler says as he plops onto the couch next to Jane.
"You might have a point" she shrugs "That’s exactly what Jaehyun-"
“For all we know Sungjae might want to be alone for a while before jumping into a relationship again” Daniel cuts her off, looking at Jane with a revolted expression “Or maybe experiment a bit?” he adds casually.
“It's not gonna happen, Daniel” Tyler is about to start another of his famous arguments with the model when Tara jumps excitedly off the chair where she was standing on a second ago.
“Ok, ok, children…” the woman says standing in the middle of her friends and clapping for their attention “We want this to be perfect. I've been working on this for 8 hours straight. If this goes according to my plans, Sungjae will be over Ashleigh by the end of- "
"T, stop worrying, I swear on my new Gucci kicks, Sungjae won’t even get the time to think about Ashleigh because he’ll be busy enough."
"Why?"
"Because he’ll be fucking like a-"
"Sweetheart, the cake is on the wrong table, it's supposed to be on the food table" Tara ignores her brother in favor of scolding Mark's lack of common sense, her observant eyes catching on every detail as she walks around the living room making sure there's not a single thing out of place. "I told you like 20 times"
"Sorry babe, there are like 5 tables" Mark says moving faster than the Flash to move the cake. Tyler and Daniel exchange knowing glances, probably agreeing on how pathetic it is that Mark is wrapped around Tara’s little finger.
"I really hope this goes well" M says before taking a deep breath "If you don't do it for Sungjae, please do it for me" The group of friends looks at M questioningly "What hurts him, hurts me too" he says solemnly, earning laughs from his friends and one or two cushions thrown at him.
The details on why “the squad” has gathered in Sungjae and M's apartment and there's a sign reading “welcome back to single life” hanging from the ceiling are still up to debate, but briefly explained, it all comes down to the fact Sungjae has turned into an overnight sensation on social media after discovering, during the premiere of his latest movie and in the most unceremonious of the ways, that his girlfriend had been cheating on him. Though his friends had tried to omit the fact Sungjae was on his knee when a reporter asked about a video shared on social media that showed Ashleigh in a very compromising position with another man, news traveled fast, and over the last couple of days, a good portion if not the whole British population had already watched the video of Sungjae losing his cool and nearly punching said reporter.
The details on why the whole squad followed Sungjae to his first Tinder date are also still up to debate but as Tyler reminds Daniel through a text message the only reason they’re doing it is to make sure they can offer their advice if things get out of control, or maybe serve him as an alibi in case he wants to leave earlier.
That’s exactly why in Tyler’s opinion, Daniel’s date’s presence is as unnecessary as the huge sculpture blocking Sungjae’s face. Though on second thought the same could be said about Maude who’s sitting right next to Director Hwang, a respectable and world-celebrated filmmaker Daniel has been a fan of for as long as Tyler can remember and for some reason agreed to accompany the model tonight.
Across the room, Mark and Tara sit with an air of satisfaction surrounding them. Much to their friends’ (who had even placed some bets about whether they would show up or not) annoyance, the couple occupies the most coveted table in The Penthouse, with a full view over the Thames. It is of common knowledge that Tara and Mark tend to be on the receiving end of their friends' jokes about leading a boring and monotonous life, so they laugh at the way Jane reluctantly slides a 20-pound bill over the table she is sharing with M while they sip from glasses of exotic cocktails whose names they have already forgot.
Sungjae’s date is a twenty-something young girl named Olivia, who happens to google Sungjae’s name and find out about the Ashleigh fiasco during the first 10 minutes of their date. She is laidback, lacks some manners, and is fixated on watching Sungjae cry, because after all, “that’s what actors do”. It doesn’t take long before Sungjae is seeking help from his friends. He goes to Tara and Mark first simply because they’re the closest to his table and they always offer the best advice. Sungjae regrets his choice immediately once he realizes they’re both tipsy and are acting unlike themselves, giggling like school kids who’ve been drinking for the first time.
“What’s wrong with you two?” Sungjae says sliding on the free seat next to Mark “You may want to slow down with the alcohol” he says.
“So, who’s the boring one now? Not me” Tara slurs her words, “Did you bet against us as well?”
“That’s not important” Sungjae says, brushing the accusation off simply because he doesn’t want to admit he might’ve placed his bet against his friends. “My date is going horribly, she wants me to cry and I can’t stop embarrassing myself. I don’t know what’s wrong with me”
“Sungjae, bro” Mark says wrapping an arm around Sungjae’s shoulders, his movements erratic and his voice a bit unrecognizable. “Olivia is just a rebound, she’s doesn’t have to be the love of your life, just a girl you have a good time with. Relax” Sungjae winces at Mark’s words, not quite believing he’s getting such useless advice from one of his wisest friends.
“No, no, it’s just the opposite, she could become someone special, love” Tara says, leaning across the table to hold Sungjae’s hand and give it a squeeze “Don’t be afraid to be yourself and be in touch with your feelings, women like that”
“Okaaaay”
The couple’s advice proves to be completely useless once Sungjae goes back to his table and Olivia’s phone starts ringing with notifications Sungjae recognizes as Tinder messages. Against his better judgment, minutes later Sungjae finds himself interrupting what seems to be a very lively conversation between his best friend and Jane.
“Olivia is on Tinder, this is definitely not going well” he informs as he sits across Jane.
“It sounds a lot like a movie I watched last-“ M starts to say but is interrupted by Jane’s exasperated voice.
“Don’t be so easily intimidated, Lee” She snorts, “We women like assertive men, who are confident and know what they want”
“Yes, be confident, Sungjae. You’re Sungjae Lee, the famous and renowned actor” M continues. Sungjae tries to ignore the way his friend’s cheeks slightly heat when Jane nods along, approving of his words.
“Okay, okay, be confident” Sungjae repeats to himself. “I can do that, or at least pretend to”
As he walks back to his table, Sungjae can hear Tyler scoffing at Director Hwang’s praises to Daniel’s "very proportional face". He concludes that he’ll rather finish his date before asking for that table’s advice next.
Then, it happens. Sungjae spots the most beautiful creature he has ever laid his eyes upon. The woman in question is sitting on her own, a few tables away from his, her eyes are big, her lips full and her hair falls gracefully in soft waves. She wears an expensive-looking dress that leaves her back completely bare but is long enough to hide her ankles. Sungjae almost bumps into a waiter when the woman’s eyes briefly meet his and she smiles a Mona Lisa smile that is enigmatic, attractive and seems to say “Yes, I know”.
Sungjae is not a religious man, but for some reason the first thought invading his brain is that whoever said God is a woman had probably seen this woman before.
