matt and casey:
pre-relationship: 5
love: 1, 9
domestic life: 3, 5
Ship asks meme (feel free to send for anything I ship)
Ooh, so, 4/5 of these I answered last time, but this was a while ago, and as usual I talked way too much! So I'm using this as an opportunity to answer in a succinct (possibly slightly updated) way but with links back to my longer answers too 😊
Pre-relationship 5: Did either of them try to resist their feelings?
Yes! Both of them!
Although they end up having sex with each other rather early on the ship, there's this moment afterwards when they're joking around together and it's kind of evident there's something more there. Knowing there's potential for something romantic to occur, Casey vetoes them having sex again, in fact making a catch-all "rule" on that. She later tries to go back on it but being the same day she attacked Matt over not wanting to rescue Johnny, he does not react well. (The words "why don't you just fuck Johnny Gat?" may have been thrown around. Those words may have been acted upon.)
They make up and become friends, both repressing thier attraction to each other in favour of how well they get along. But inevitably they both end up developing feelings for each other anyway. Casey resists hers because she has (questionable) reasons for not wanting a relationship. Matt resists his because he knows that about her.
But Matt realises he has feelings for Casey right after GOOH, and that he's in love with her a few months later when Asha calls her out on it. Casey realises hers while Matt is in the past and realises she's in love with him when her past self calls her out on it.
Longer/original answer
Love 1: Who said “I love you” first?
Matt did, although it was to Casey's past self as he was basically dying and knew she would at least remember it by the time she was the version of herself the confession related to. Her younger self was not in love with him, but she did tell him her name in return.
When they were both synced back up time-wise, Casey was struggling to speak her feelings so Matt suggested she replicate Jane Austen prose as it's something she's more comfortable with. Through this she was able to say she loved him, and he was able to return it again very emphatically.
Longer/original answer
Love 9: What kind of nicknames do they call each other?
Casey mostly just uses Matty, baby, and sweetie.
Matt uses more of a mix but mostly Cass, babe/baby, darling, my love, and in the bedroom; princess.
Longer/original answer
Domestic life 3: How many kids do they have, if any? What are they like?
Yes; once they're properly settled down on the new planet they have 3. The oldest is Victory, she's the one Casey's pregnant with at the end of my fanfic and in a few pieces I've drawn, she was (will be?) born in June 2024. She's very calm, intelligent and methodical.
They also have identical twins (cis boy and trans girl) born in April 2026. They're not in my fic (apart from the general implication in one scene that Mass plan to have 3 children) yet their existence is a lot more fanfic cliché- conceived on wedding night (first baby free night in over a year, cut them some slack!), identical twins, a real fucking handful...!
Their names are Apollo and Artemis (goes more by just Emi post-social transition) but the names have never quite sat right for me. Idk if it's because it seems a bit on the nose for twins to have those names, because they don't grab me in the way Vic's name did, or just because I worry because it's Casey one of them would be named after the fucking doughnut shop.
Longer/original answer - more detailed descriptions of their appearances and personalities here.
Domestic life 5: Who’s the stricter parent?
This is one I've not answered yet and I struggled how to phrase this but I'd say it depends what you mean by strict!
Matt is a far more methodical, researched, overthinking parent, and the better of the two at setting gentle boundaries for expected behaviour, but a little more relaxed with things like schedules and getting ready and so on, as well as more likely to get carried away with playing games with them.
Casey is a more instinctual, emotional parent. She's not quite as good at setting boundaries and more likely to lose her temper from time to time though she mostly talks herself down before she gets to the yelling stage, and learns to apologise if she doesn't manage to. She's stricter with schedules and worries more about the kids academically than Matt does.
So I'd say Casey probably appears the strictest overall, but Matt's the one putting the most work into firm, gentle discipline. Casey's used to leading adults and it takes her a while to adjust.

You might have gathered...
There's a lot of "carrot and stick" stuff in my life.
You know the kind of thing... meme-y, proverbial, jokey stuff—Godfather clichés. Only, without the joke or the art.
There's the threatening bits...
Some of that is quite hard to write about and still get taken seriously... like the crying plumber (long story).
And some of it "just doesn't happen" to nice professional girls—like being hustled into a dark restaurant which is deserted and "under renovation" only to be "shot", a bit later, with a finger gun.
Some of it is really disconcerting at first—that includes the crazy computer interface and all the stuff with people I used to trust.
But some of it is just a rather frightening cliché—like the endless "nice—living—you're—doing—there—shame—if—something—were—to—happen—to—it" innuendo.
Then, there's the carrot-y invitation bits that make the whole thing go round:
"visit our website, we've got all the words", "solve your problems on our app, it'll be better if you do", "spend time with us", "look here", "listen to this", "take this job", "register for this course", "go to this event"... yeah, just stuff.
And, finally, there's the stick-y punishment bits:
the shouty stuff, the contrived humiliation, weird financial penalties that simply don't make sense, things paid for that never turn up, people that do turn up and denigrate or damage my family...
Think: "she'll go through some things". Stuff. That's about the long and short of it. Those are the things that happen when I turn the invitation down. And I almost invariably do. The greater the punishment, the more resistant I become—that's just human nature as far as all but the most craven of us are concerned.
Anyway, I used to think this whole pattern was a huge "gain of function" thing. You know what I mean... someone somewhere wants to learn how to get someone like me to solve or transmit their subtext—not just any old sh*t in the news. It would be useful, no? And it seemed like a good explanation.
Perhaps it was a good explanation... for a lot of it. But it sorta assumed some very sophisticated malign, state-sponsored organisation that could infiltrate and manipulate everything, everywhere all at once.
And, well, that theory has some pretty significant problems of which Occam's Razor and Tall Poppy Syndrome are just two. Occam's Razor is a philosophical injunction not to hypothesise unnecessary entities or machinations when devising an explanation. Tall Poppy Syndrome is the idea that a single out-sized social influencer that takes his/her power or celebrity for granted will eventually get cut down to size by the sheer number of resentful average people and organisations ranged against him/her. That's not quite what I mean but I'm relying on a geopolitical version which assumes that any outsized political or criminal actor in the world will, if it commonly acts in a hostile manner, attract an equally strong hostile reaction. My single-entity theory of pervasive harassment suffered from both these defects.
What I realised this year is that I already know of a non-human, decentralised, all-powerful system that incentivises everyone to act in anti-social ways and it's the free market.*
So, my thinking underwent something of a shift. I no longer assume that this is gain-of-function research properly so called. I've come to assume that it's attention-farming...the simple idea that types like me who play with subtext can all be persuaded to migrate to a particular platform. The objective is to leverage all our activity and attention by selling access, data and, well, the mere prospect of "gain of function" research.
It's a theory to be going on with, no?
*You'd never believe it from reading this but, actually, I'm something of a fan... most days... with appropriate caveats.

Munday Meme! | Always Open!
💭 — MBTI and/or enneagram, if known ENFJ-T! Aka Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging and Turbulent. The site says it's "The turbulent Protagonist" lololol. Almost identical to the Lance face, except that he's Thinking instead of Feeling ❤️ — what are some of your best qualities?
I'm very organized, structured and thorough at work. Colleagues and friends also say that I'm very reliable and don't let people down. I also like to think that I'm fairly chill and friendly/open with just about anyone, though I admit that that can be a bit superficial. 🎮 — favorite video game(s)? Project Zomboid, The Last Of Us games, especially Part 2, Detroit Become Human, RDR2, Subnautica also fun and relaxing games such as ATS or Firewatch, recently played It Takes Two with a friend and also adored that game. I either love storydriven games or post apocalyptic sandbox games. I got almost 1k hours of Project Zomboid lmfao 🍝 — favorite food(s)? It's like each year I got a new favorite boring type of self-made soup as a favorite. Last year it was pumpkin soup, this year it's tomato soup, I LOOOVE all types of green salads and eat like 5 bowls of them a week, sweet potatoes are my latest hype, be that as chips, fries or god knows what else I can make out of them. Also cliché German who loves a great kebab 🎶 — favorite song at the moment? Worst is on its way by Korn, but actually the big remix with HEALTH and the like. I'm usually not really one for hip hop and so forth but this mashup's such a fucking baaaanger and I love how dark it sounds. Stuck on repeat ever since it came out and makes me go feral on the dancefloor at my local goth club haha. Can't believe I've been a Korn fan for over 20 years. 🧶 — any non-writing hobbies/interests? MOVIES, all the movies and tv shows and obv filmmaking, with it being my job. Also reading and listening to podcasts, watching a crapload of documentaries and information videos on youtube about stuff that interests me (morbidly enough that's engineering disasters both in architecture, with airplanes and ships, but also darker psychology stuff), I'm super interested in abandoned stuff and urban exploration, gaming's obv also a big one, and I like to keep informed on latest developments in consumer electronics and PC building, lovecraftian mythology is obv a big one lately, but also some economics/financial sector stuff or nature and 'how it's made' documentaries, just a whole variety of things I keep myself stuffed with on youtube and Spotify 😗 — what are some of your favorite things to do when you have some time to yourself?
The neat part is that I'm a very independent sort of 'loner' person since I have no interest in romantic relationships or marriage whatsoever, so I mostly have time to myself if I'm not working or consciously hanging out with friends and I know how to use that me time well. Ever since I started on my weight loss journey last year I've come to really enjoy doing sporty things such as swimming countless laps each week at a pool, or religiously running 5k every week if the weather allows it, have even started going to a gym every once in a while, and in the summer doing lots of cycling and inline skating and paddling on the lake. Being active has just honestly become such fun for me. Also like I said before I do love a good read or audio book, I also love looking at my game concept art books or doing puzzles (I'll literally sit for hours and finish a 1k puzzle in one go), then obv writing stories and RPing, gaming, I also picked up French on Duolingo to refresh my old school lessons, so lemme tell you, my 'me time' schedule is always full. I also love to go to my local goth club and dance til I can't walk anymore every now and then. Though I do go to the movies/parties/brunches and what not with friends a lot to, I also like to do it on my own every now and then! I do recommend spending more time with yourself and not making your entire existence absolutely depended on the company of other people 24/7, it can be really insightful, relaxing and refreshing!

(1/4, Sorry in advance for how long this is) This feels strange. I've read all of PT, so when DR Ch2 came out I was excited, but it didn't feel right. Yes, Queen and Spamton are now two of my favourite UT/DR characters, and Susie was great, especially hometown interactions and bonding with Toriel. I also made sure not to compare it to PT and just think about as a continuation of Ch1, but overall it felt...wrong?
(2/4) I think it was too meme-y/joke-y and a lot of the jokes felt predictable (parody jokes that I see so often, they're becoming a cliché themselves) so they lost their punch a bit. PT still had a sense of humour, but it was a different kind and the story was the main focus. I even replayed DR Ch1 before starting Ch2 and that felt as good as I remembered.
(3/4) It also felt a bit hostile. I don't think that was Toby's intent (Except for weird route ofc), the "Your choices don't matter" has been a thing since DR Ch1 and PT, but it didn't feel in-your-face there. Maybe it felt fine in PT because the player barely featured, so those false choices rarely came up. It feels unwelcoming, but maybe that's the point.
(4/4) For context I liked Earthbound, UT, DR Ch1 and similar games, but it seems DR is going in a direction I don't want to follow. Thats fine, I'm just surprised it happened. I know its not fair to compare an incomplete game to a finished comic, but I actually prefer PT over canon. In other words, well done! Side note: When Lancer appeared in Queen's jail and his theme played, I sat for a minute before continuing. All his dialogue was gold, that's when I realised how much I missed my bouncy boy
(5/4) I'd also like to say thank you for your work and this ask box, it must take a lot of time and effort to do the stuff you do. I know you're preparing for your next project, but try and take a break sometime soon, you've earnt it.
I did end up liking chapter two a bunch, and I'm very interested to see where the rest of the story goes in canon! I'm not sure how hostile the narrative will be towards the player in the future, and I do wonder if it might become more hostile with future chapters, but at the same time I think that can be an interesting experience to explore in a game.
I think perhaps the humor is easy for people to meme (all the GET THE BANANA jokes are a prime example), but I don't know if it's necessarily meme-y? I guess that's a nebulous category anyway. I'll admit I'm a total sucker for that "stock explosion noise and sprite" that Toby uses a lot; it gets me every time.
And yeah, since the game's not complete yet, I hope that too many people don't do that as a comparison to PT, which is finished! Either way, I'm very glad that you liked PT, and that you at least have that story for yourself!! Thanks very much for the kind words!

Don Hermes: A Deep Dive
Hello, back from the grave(briefly)
I know I said I would be taking a break from posting analysis of the episodes and scenes but I've been thinking about this for weeks and I can't get it out of my head so might as well write a post dedicated to Don Hermes.
In order to really understand this character, once more, we have to look at the dynamics, culture, era, and context of cause and effect of this character, his motives, reasons, and effects not only that affect him but effect Betty.
In this post I will be discussing the following:
Actions don't tend to only affect those who cause and those who are direct receivers of said actions; contrary they are a domino effect.
We have to look at the consequences of daughters who grow up with and without a father.
As I've mentioned before in order to write good characters you have to understand your characters. It's not a maybe, a possibility, or a perhaps in the choices your characters make, it is a 100% understanding of the choices your characters make.
Domino Effect:
Feelings and emotions are something that contribute a lot in the way we behave, react, and deal with things, if we didn't have emotions than it would be a warning to seek professional help.
What does this have to do with a fictional character?
The lure of watching TV is that it's meant to be mindless, numbly, and just something to fry your brain so you can escape reality. Unless you set out to watch a real life event made to movie based on facts or a documentary you expect that everything you watch is meant to not make you think. It's the appealing factor of watching TV instead of reading. With reading you're more aware of the dilemas, action, cause and effect, as well as see the world through the main character's eyes.
It's sort of a manual that guides you right through this story you've jumped in to see. You become the main character and see the world just as they see it. However with TV, that's not something you truthfully get[to experience] and the reason being is that even when there is a main character being the voice of guidance like in books, you really get to see the main character for what they are. You aren't vividly in the main character's train of thought like in reading, you're only watching it, not living it, so small details in movies and tv shows can be greatly missed, unless if you're like me, who obsesses over small tiny details, than you aren't going to pick up on it right away, or maybe never.
We know one film snobs who think certain movies are the epidemy of art and commentary of society norms and that mundane movies and tv shows based on clichés are boring and braindead excuses that only people who can't think watch, yuck.
Suspenseful, detective, crime, and thriller movies have an advantage, you as the viewer, know that something is up and that the character's can't be trusted, even the main character, so you as the viewer, make the extra effort to pay attention to small details. It becomes a conscious effort, just like reading.
When you're reading you make the conscious effort to pay attention to detail because you know that in order to really enjoy the book you must immerse yourself into that world. I've seen memes where people say: When you're reading and you're the director, the producer, wardrobe/set designer, and main actor on set so you have to cut the scene, go back and re-read a sentence until you imagine it just right.
When you're watching TV all of that is done for you. It's why many times when novels, trilogies, or books are turned into movies we're left disappointed because it's not what we imagined.
What does all of this have to do with domino effect and Don Hermes you ask?
Well simply put: he's a character that is just as wonderfully written as the rest that people just lump with a bad father and I am here to clear his name.
To watch Yo Soy Betty, La Fea and really understand the moral of the story you have to pay attention to detail because it gives a broader understanding of the characters, moral, and overall the point of the story we're being told.
These details if ignored, distort the story we are hearing. It gives it a false narrative and takes away the reality that Fernando Gaitan was writing and that's another thing; YSBLF is based on the logic of that world and it closely if not, is a mirroring or resemblance to our real world and the commentary of FG on it.
In Latine America men are raised to be mentally, emotionally, and physically strong and that they are stronger in all those aspects to that of women. The consequence of this is that it builds a culture of machismo where the translation that men and women are different means that women are lesser than men, in that culture and that women need men to live and cater to men.
ma·chis·mo/mäˈCHēzmō/
noun strong or aggressive masculine pride. "the exaggerated machismo displayed in the tango"
Machismo is deeply imbedded in Latine American culture and taught to boys as they grow up. Nowadays that's changing and the idea of men being machistas and that being acceptable is being challenged but we're not talking about nowadays, we're talking about the past.
YSBLF came out in 1999, Betty is roughly around 23-25 when the novela starts, her father and mother are much older than her(DUH)and very old school however a bit open minded in some things. In Betty's birthday episode the way Don Hermes was dressed and the music he selected gives an understanding that he most likely was born in the late 40's or 50's and that he lived long enough in those decades to see the consequences of war, the importance of being ethical and having a good moral compass, idealizing "Simpler" times and so forth.
He is very old fashioned in the understanding that what makes a well rounded person is the family they have and how much of a reflection it is of their parents that their child is a good person. However, idealistically speaking, he goes against the grain of what a machista is, therefore he isn't a machista.
Now you may ask: "But he constantly yells at Betty and her mom!" and yes, he is a crappy husband, but we're not talking about that, just yet.
Don Hermes pushed his daughter to study, and in a field were women aren't really welcomed, especially in Latin America in the 90's(especially if you're "ugly"), constantly told her she didn't need to depend on anyone, that she didn't need a job, especially work in a place where they humiliated her, because he'd always take care of her, however, he always encouraged her to be hard working and put all her degrees to work.
That goes against the core believe that machistas have.
Now that we know he isn't a machista, let's take a look at another part of his character.
Don Hermes is very old school with the way women compose themselves. He looks down upon Betty's friends because they have "libertinaje" meaning they live a immodest lifestyle. Divorced, single mothers, separated, out without her husband, drunkards', loud, dressed in tight clothing, and "looking fervently" for a man. All things he believes women shouldn't be.
Why is that?
Understanding the domino effect is important here because this is something that Don Hermes has tried to shield Betty from, from a young age.
Wikipedia: Domino effect: A domino effect or chain reaction is the cumulative effect produced when one event sets off a chain of similar events. The term is best known as a mechanical effect and is used as an analogy to a falling row of dominoes
In the late 70's and 80's the world faced the epidemic of AIDS, at that time there wasn't a broad understanding of what AIDS was and how you got it however, it was something, that to this day, is understood to be a desease one gets from unprotected sex , multiple sex partners and a wild social life.
Yeah I know, what does this have to do with anything?
Imagine hearing in the news that globally, a desease that affects both women and men, particularly, from what I've read, AIDS was more prominent in the years of 1993-1997 in Colombia, AIDS was at it's highest rate of infection, in your country, that doesn't have enough research or treatment, is affecting the younger population. Nowadays we understand that men are at a higher risk of AIDS than women. However this type of information wasn't so openly out there in the past.
So in conclusion: There's a sexually transmitted deseas with no cure, no real understanding of how you can get it, and people who have a "Wild and free" life seem to be the most affected: My daughter will not be influenced by people to live a "wild and free" life at the risk of dying.
Yeah Don Hermes was also old school and believed that women who had relations outside of wedlock were not pristine and a bad reflection of moral teaching.
However and I will get to this later on in this post, you have to understand your character's fears and worries.
I'm trying to paint a picture here, of an example that is not at all factual in the show but just to give an understanding of what could have caused this man to be so overly protective of his daughter. If you grew up with old school traditions and teachings, with a daughter that was bullied for simply existing, in a world that didn't accept your child as is, that lives in a country where drug wars, civil wars, and epidemics of deseases with no cure are prevalent, would you not be an over bearing parent?
The domino effect of the world that Don Hermes grew up in and watched his daughter grow up in affected him to be over bearing, over protective, and a strict father.
Lets not forget that to Don Hermes Betty was his most precious possession and that he strongly believed that the best inheritance a father could leave their child was good moral conduct, modest, and ethical example.
He wanted his daughter to stay inside his house, where he could keep an eye on her, because he wanted to keep her safe and protect her from the world. Were his methods not the best? Yeah.
Due to this over protectiveness of his, Betty grew up shield from the real world and naïve to an extent, of the dangers of it and how deprived men can be. This does have a domino effect in Betty's life-when it comes to being social.
Was he at fault for his daughter's low self-esteem and self worth?
No and you can catch these hands if you think otherwise.
Lets now jump into the subject of understanding of:
What are the Consequences of growing up with and without a father for a girl?
When we get flashbacks of Betty's childhood her dad is very present in those flashbacks, overbearingly so. In the first topic we understood why he was overbearing, the reasons why, and what the domino effect of his life experience had on him as a father, however in this section we're still dealing with the domino effect of his parenting methods, but it isn't the main focus.
In the Armando post where I briefly talked about the subject of a parents roles in their child's development I said something along the lines of how children are a reflection of their environment and that parents are a huge part of their child's development.
Betty as well is a reflection of her environment and the role her parents had in her life.
We love Betty, she's sweet, caring, kind, loving, "innocent", always trying to see the good in people, and intelligent.
Father figures are an extremely important role both for their sons and daughters but especially in the role of their daughter's self-esteem.
Self-esteem isn't only based on your looks, it's a broader understanding of you and what you are as a reflection of how you feel about it all, if that makes sense.
Studies show that girls who grow up without a father tend to have more problematic relationships, low self-esteem, low self-worth, battle addiction, depression, suicide, eating disorders, etc.
Though Betty does have low self-esteem and absolutely no self-worth, she doesn't have it as a result of having an absent father and like I said in the Armando post: an absent parent doesn't always mean that the parent isn't physically there. It can mean a parent who isn't there for the emotional and mental growth and development of their child, however obviously some parents aren't there for all three things.
"Fathers provide their daughters with a masculine example. They teach their children about respect and boundaries and help put daughters at ease with other men throughout their lives. [...] So if she didn't grow up with a proper example, she will have less insight and she'll be more likely to go for a man that will replicate the abandonment of her father."

Has Don Hermes been an emotionally/mentally absent father?
Again the flashbacks we get don't point to that. In fact it's a father who is present, in mostly every flashback, and one who takes the lead of it. Betty often talks about him with endearment and even names him as her most precious possession, which mirrors Don Hermes sentiment towards her. He is her pride.
He constantly is seen being protective of her and while not the most emotional guy, he showers her with positive attention and reaffirming her worth by reminding her that she is well educated, academically educated, has good moral and ethical standing, and should be respected because she is deserving of it, not only because of all the above but because she is his daughter, his pride and joy.
So then, what are the consequences of having a present father, who is both mentally and emotionally present in a girls life?
For one self-esteem and self worth are a lot higher, expectations of men and long lasting relationships with them are healthier, they are not afraid to set boundaries, self-respect, lower chances of risky behavior etc.
Speaking from experience of being a daddy's girl: a father's role is extremely important to building healthy relationships with not only men but people in general(I was gonna make a personal experience joke but it was outta pocket). My father taught me how to read, draw, write, count, and how to cry it out. There wasn't a bad day in school that I didn't go to my dad to cry and vent and he'd always gift me something afterwards be it a fancy eraser or a doll. My father in some ways reminds me of Don Hermes so my opinion could be a bit personal lol.
Authoritative parenting style is the best style of parenting because it is both teaching of moral conduct and consequences as well as catering to the emotional and mental needs of your child while still teaching them natural consequences and how to rightfully deal with problems.
Don Hermes has that style of parenting. He often sets rules, expectations, boundaries, and goals for Betty. He encourages her and is there to celebrate her and there to hold her hand when she fails.
Ironically enough, writing this post I realized that Armando has daddy issues, like I knew he had parental problems and how they shaped him but It hadn't hit me how deeply affected he was because of his father's absence :(
I bring Armando up right now because even though he isn't a girl he is the perfect example in the show of a child who grew up without a father's love while Betty is the perfect example of someone who did.
Why do I say all of this?
This brings us to the third and the final topic of this post:
You Have To Understand Your Characters:
What does this mean?
In order to write a four dimensional character you have to know them, like you would a friend or family member, through and through. I'm more likely giving too much credit to FG as Don Hermes was a secondary character, albeit one of the most important secondary characters, so it's likely he didn't really sit there and think about this mans childhood, how it affected him in raising a child, how he met Julia his wife, how he reacted when he found out he was going to be a father; in reality he probably based Don Hermes's parental and loving qualities around his own personal experience as a father and tried to understand where Don Hermes was coming from but again I don't know FG lol or seen any of his interviews, except for one, regarding YSBLF.
Personally how I go about writing and fleshing out my OC's is that I interview them. I come up with the concept of my character, you know the basics, goals, ambitions, fears, insecurities, description and so forth and then I go about asking them personal questions, from there on I go and think of their most traumatic experiences and how that shaped them, their best memory, do they have siblings? If they do how close? Are they close to their parents? What is their family life like? Lastly, after I understand these characters backstory I ask myself: What is the purpose of this character in this story? Do they play a vital role? Could I take them out and the story would keep going as if nothing or would it move the story?
When you understand your characters you understand why they behave a certain way. Being a writer who knows their characters pretty well makes writing the story in it of itself pretty easy because you understand where they are coming from. You understand the purpose of their words, why they stand the way they do. You understand in completion what makes the character themselves and in order to do that you must be well versed in their behavior.
What does this have to do with Don Hermes?
Simple: Don Hermes isn't a one dimensional, two dimensional, or even a three dimensional character. He is 4D.
What is his fear? That his daughter suffers.
What is his motivation? Being a good example to his daughter, leaving her with the best inheritance.
What is his ambition? To be a good member of society who upholds principal and ethical actions despite that not achieving riches.
What is his goal? To be a good father who sets a good example for his daughter so she may follow in his footsteps.
These are the basics. They give us a basic understanding of Don Hermes, right?
Now the final questions are:
If he is a good father why is Betty insecure? and how is it possible that his overbearing parenting style didn't negatively impact Betty?
When I write my analysis of scenes/episodes and focus on body language I always remind y'all that context is key. It is for absolutely everything in life.
By solely blaming Don Hermes for all of Betty's problems in reality you're taking away the responsibility that society has and plays the role of, in a young person's life.
What do I mean by this? And what does this have to do with understanding your character?
Well we're about to talk about my dear and sweet Betty and this is a part of her character I've been dying to talk about!
I, again, can speak on experience. As mentioned above, I grew up with a present father in my life. I am a daddy's girl. However I too grew up insecure.
Society has a lot to do with it.
Just like Betty, my father was over protective of me as a child. He wouldn't let me handle anything dangerous, would constantly tell me that people in the world had bad intentions and most importantly after a good cry he'd kiss my cheeks and tell me that he loved me very much and then shower me with surprise toys or crafting supplies.
Betty's dad was the exact same. When we get the flashback of him pulling her towards the house so she wouldn't play with the neighborhood kids he tells her: "That's why I bought you all your toys, so you can have fun. The devil is a pig, remember that." the meaning behind that wasn't only to tell Betty she'd be tempted to do something bad in reality he used it as telling her "The world is a terrible place with terrible people who will hurt you."
side note: I want to make it canon(now that I know what that means) that Don Hermes had a Corn collection. This doesn't really have anything to do with this post except it's about Don Hermes but that one day when he was telling Betty that she had her own kind of beauty and that men liked exotic beauty, after she left he told Julia that he was well versed because he kept up with the times and that's why he had that collection[of magazines] in their room, so he could keep up with modern days.
He knew the kids in the neighborhood bullied Betty, they didn't involve her in their games and he heard the whispers from parents around the neighborhood as well so in his own way, in his own terms, he protected Betty from rejection by taking the burden of being the one who prohibited her from mingling with the outside world, however the damage was there because in school Betty still had to deal with those rats.
In one of the first episodes, when Roman asked Betty to go out, Betty, giving the benefit of the doubt, agreed to go out however Don Hermes didn't want her to go out with Roman and Co. for two reasons: Betty could do better than him and his loser friends and to protect her from rejection. However the reason I bring this up is because Betty mentioned that Don Hermes took her out of public school and placed her in a convent when her friends started to get boyfriends. (I only saw the final episode, I skipped all the way to the end, so that I could be prepared to deal with the emotional pain of their breakup but I still haven't seen the second part, anyway)Don Hermes mentioned that he always wanted his daughter to be pristine(a virginia) and that he raised her to know that the most integral part of her was the center of her family.
For one I mentioned the AIDS epidemic for two reasons: that it would be a motive for him to be so, extremely, sheltering of Betty in regards of her socializing with people who could lead her down a path that could affect her in her health as well as ruin their moral and ethic standing(we see the way he scorned her when she was offered the commission). Not to mention that parents in countries that have a lot of conflict are often very strict in regards of their child's social life in fear that they could wind up dead, drug addict, delinquent, victim of human trafficking, and other things on the likes. I recently found this out while doing some research of El Salvador's music scene(there's some really good bands out there but bc of the conflict younger generations aren't active in the scene back there due to parents restrictions out of fear.). So while Don Hermes is old school in regards of his daughter maintaining her virginal status because it reflect good on their family and she is in god's grace, as well that keeping her away from people who could corroded those principals he's instilled in her, he also has other motives as to keep her on a short social leash. This reason and the one mentioned above in regard of trying to save her from suffering rejection and this is what I'll stress out in the following.
Both socially for their reputation, her mental, physical, and emotional protection, Don Hermes doesn't let Betty out of the house with anyone unless it's Nicolas because Don Hermes has practically watched him grow and in some way he's also been like a father figure to Nicolas. We understand where he's coming from now.
The reason I brought up what the effects of growing up with and without a present father in a girl's life is because we need to really understand the root of Betty's self-esteem and self-worth issues and to debunk the idea that Don Hermes is behind all of that we need to see and understand how a character with fatherless daughter disorder would be written and presented by understanding the effects of the child into adulthood. Seeing as Don Hermes was an active father of Betty's life in all three aspects of: Physically being present, emotionally, and mentally as well, which means he set up a good example of being a man, which is also a reason why Betty is attracted to Armando's personality because it is a love she knows, which doesn't cause her to be as afraid of him(I've explained this in previous post but I can't remember right now what they're titled, sorry.) So not only are we told from Betty's own words that her father is her most precious possession we also have facts to prove why that is and how much Don Hermes loves Betty and in his own way tries to protect her and shield her from danger and pain.
I'll answer why she's insecure in a bit.
Now in regards for understand characters, which brings this whole post full circle is very easy: Even if there wasn't a backstory written for a character, simply by understanding the basics of your character you can make a compelling character that is 4D, all by making his goals, fears, motives, ambitions, and desires realistic and it leaves just enough room for the reader to interpret and understand what the meaning of that character is for the story and the purpose it serves. That alone allows us to determine whether the character is good, worthy of redemption, and the lesson they are trying to teach us.
I rave about Armando, Mario, and even Marcela's(tho her not too much) and Betty's complexities but Don Hermes is a character who deserves to be defended! He is a good father who loves his daughter greatly.
Which is why we get such a contrast with Roberto. Roberto wasn't an emotionally or mentally present father in Armando's life. His love was always conditional. The day that both fathers find out about their children's borderline illegal business activities they both react so differently. Don Hermes decided that while he won't act like he approves or is okay with what Betty has done that he'll show face for her and that he'll make her deal with the consequences, however, that among all of that, she will always have a shoulder to cry on and lean her head on. While Roberto tells his son, who is in the brink of tears(I'll talk about that scene in due time cause boooooiii I gotta a lot to say!) that he never wants to speak to him again and basically that he's dead to him and walks out of the meeting room, he doesn't even tell him: What you did is bad and you have to face and deal with the consequences on your own but I still love you. Nah homes legit just said "Bye ur ded 2 meh."
Fernando knew his characters and their moral standing as well as purpose for the story and that alone is what separates these fathers and allows us as viewers to interpret their lives outside of the big screen(ikik he didn't expect it to be such a huge thing but let me boost this dead man's ego, too soon?).
And for the closing argument:
Betty's insecurities were not in part or any part, due to to her father. Who had an authoritative parent style —y'all should look those up if you want a further understanding of parental styles and what roles they have in the development of their child. While yes her social awkwardness is a consequence and domino effect of Don Hermes short leash, it is not fully and completely his fault.
They are in part and completely due to society and their treatment of her and that's the moral of showing a loving father and an insecure daughter.
Society rejected Betty for simply existing, without giving her the chance to be herself, to give love. Society taunted, teased, bullied, traumatized, and abused her and for what? To show power over her? To take out their own insecurities onto her? No matter how much her father could love her, how much he told her she was beautiful in her own way, who adored her and encouraged her to achieve her goals and set high expectations for herself, it was never enough because the outside world hated her for simply and only breathing!
Trying to blame Don Hermes, trying to point the finger to him is rejecting and neglecting the vitality of Fernando's commentary on society and the way it treats women, especially women who are not the status quo. Betty is only treated well, respected, and not made fun of by society when she no longer is "ugly" while she is still the same person within that she was from that start(more confident and sure of herself as a professional and a woman) society doesn't care, now she's pretty and it isn't until then that they think and believe she is deserving of human decency.
That's the whole point! That's the whole reason of Betty's role in the novela! The purpose of her character! That while she was ugly she was still so kind, loving, pure, and trying to see the good in others, despite the trauma she's faced in life. Society still deems to dehumanize her and cause her harm and it isn't until AFTER she has a physical transformation that they decide to treat her like a human!(I'm not directly talking about Marce, Patty, or Hugo and especially Daniel but rather society outside of Eco Moda.). The commentary of how society prefers mean, rude, selfish, and arrogant beautiful people rather that good, kind, loving, and selfless "ugly" people and if that moral of the story, which is the biggest reason of the story existing, doesn't translate to you, what are you doing?
Her lack of knowledge of men while is also a domino effect of her father's over protectiveness it also and in part the trauma of it, is because of society. Little girls who grew up being teased, bullied constantly over our looks that grow into teen and women hood still being bullied over our looks makes us feel un-womanly and undesired that even the small gesture of affection makes us believe that maybe we are worthy, not of love, but attention not only as women but human, is damaging! Again, dismissing this and blaming Don Hermes ignores the issues that society has and it takes away our responsibility and accountability in this issue.
I rest my case!
Don Hermes is a good father who is not to blame for Betty's insecurities or self-worth issues!
Husband... he isn't the best one.
I'd need to make a part two for that part of his character and right now I'm beat, sleep deprived again and my head and neck hurt as well as my back.
Again ignore any grammar mistakes.
Til next time! :)
[EDIT: There is so many obvious examples in the novela that prove how loving Don Hermes is towards Betty that I didn't mention in the post. Understanding the culture, the era, and his dynamic was a lot more important imo to talk about so it could explain his irrational behavior and the process of writing a character. It's a lot of research and really important to be able to have well written characters. If any of you would like to comment an instant in which Don Hermes showed how much he loved Betty, feel free to comment it :)]

Yo, if you're still doing Marvel match-ups, could you do one for me? (if not, it's fine, love to read your other stuff as well ❤️)
I've not seen Eternals and Shang-Chi yet, so if you could avoid them that'd be awesome.
I'm a university student, studying english to become an interpreter, female, hetero. Quite tall, but smaller than most Marvel boys. My hair are short, usually purple or whatever I see fit at the moment (might fck around and make them like,,, rainbow, next) and that's probably the most noticeable thing about me, aside from being a menace when I decide that I want to get to know someone. I try not to be pushy, but I often just start asking a lot of random questions to get to know new people, like, hi what's your favourite type of a screw, because how people answer to that estimates what kinda person they are (are you gonna go on a tangent about how those like,,, crosses are better or are you gonna ask me what the fuck do i mean? both answers are good, but i got to see where to go from there 😂) I feel like I have two moods: loud tomboy or softie baby doll and there is nothing in-between.
I have a bunch of unread books waiting for me, but now I mostly watch the biggest movies that come out or horrors (but that only with someone, I'm too much of a chicken to watch them alone). I like to sing, even if not well. I like rock and punk music (a lot of subgenres here), have some posters of my favourite artists in my room. I like big cozy sweaters, stolen t-shirts, hours-long hugs, holding hands, playing with people's hair, cliché scenes in rom-coms, fluffy animals, sittings for hours with a tea in the morning to wake up properly. I like small gifts, like a rock or a button that made the person gifting it to me thing about me. I treasure them more than the expensive stuff. I have one flower that still lives on my windowsill and I will do anything for that sucker to survive. And I mean. Everything.
I really don't like when someone is ignoring me, I'd rather hear that they don't want to listen to me. I don't like people who are too stubborn to learn new things and change their mind. I absofkinlutely hate storms and other big scary weather formations. I don't like people who don't take boundries seriously. I have a big problem with people not treating retail workers, waiters etc. properly. People who don't feel protective over those that are weaker in a certain situation disturb me. If a someone's being an asshole, you need to be ready to back me up, I can't fight foe shit, but boy, I can't watch someone get treated badly.
Bucky Barnes
Nobody expected you two together, like seeing you both together for the first time is like that Deadpool meme {you know the one}
You know bucky appreciate that you’re not trying too hard and just asking bland questions at first
Either you’re being a tomboy or a softie Bucky wouldn’t treat any gentler, even if gets a bit moody he doesn’t like changing his attitude towards you
Bucky seems like the type to read those books out loud for you on a boring Wednesday
Blast rock music in the early morning and you’ll find him head popping in the living room
You can steal his clothes but he won’t hesitate to tackle you to the coach to get his sweater back if you make snarky comments
Playing with his hair makes him super relaxed and calm
Bucky knows how important boundaries are so if you keep his he’ll keep up with yours
He won’t hold you back but he’ll stand behind you to scare off whoever tries it

My name is Brandon. Brandon Brown, to be specific. Yes, that Brandon.
I am Brandon, the NASCAR driver and unlikely meme. A 28-year-old who now finds himself in the middle of the American political conversation. As a pro driver, I never expected to be in the passenger seat of my own viral moment.
On October 2, I won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega—my first major win. It was a hell of a moment for me, my family, my team and my sponsors. It's cliché, but it is a moment I had dreamt about my entire life.
In a post-race interview after the win, I accidentally became one of the most famous drivers in NASCAR. Thousands of fans could be heard chanting what the reporter (incorrectly) said was "Let's Go Brandon!," and a meme was born. Since that race, my name has been chanted in literally hundreds of stadiums across the country, spanning nearly every conceivable sport (and then some). I've heard my name chanted in bars, at events, in the course of everyday life and even in the chambers of Congress.
I am fully aware that the millions of Americans chanting my name know little about me or about my winning the Talladega race that day. But I have spent the last few weeks getting to know more about them, and I'd like to share a little more about myself.
All the advice I got from those around my racing career was to stay quiet after that now-famous interview. No one knew how my sponsors would react and, in my world, there is no car to drive without the sponsors.
So, I kept quiet. I turned down more press requests than I imagined someone could ever get—especially someone just starting his NASCAR career. I was afraid of being canceled by my sponsors, or by the media, for being caught up in something that has little to do with me.
Those who thought this would all go away appear not to understand why millions of people are chanting my name.
Racing at 200 miles per hour doesn't give me a lot of time to think about politics. And even if it did, I have always preferred the roar of the engine to the roar of my voice.
My job is to run the next lap faster than the last one. Politics has never been that interesting to me. Though, like most, I have always had the impression that politicians were likely the cause of more problems than they were the solutions.
These last few weeks, I have spent a lot of time trying to understand why millions of people are chanting my name (I mean, besides my mom, my dad and my late grandfather, who have cheered me on my entire life). "Let's Go Brandon!" is something I've always heard from them, but now it is something about more than just me. I think I understand.
I understand that millions of people are struggling right now and are frustrated. Struggling to get by and struggling to build a solid life for themselves and their families, and wondering why their government only seems to make it worse. People have a right to frustration—even anger.
Listen, I buy more gas than most. I don't like that $4 per gallon has become the norm. I know the cost of everything is rising and I know first-hand that making ends meet can be a struggle for middle-class folks like me.
I have no interest in leading some political fight. I race cars. I am not going to endorse anyone, and I am certainly not going to tell anyone how to vote.
But I'm also no longer going to be silent about the situation I find myself in, and why millions of Americans are chanting my name. I hear them, even if Washington does not.
Ninety-nine percent of my time this upcoming NASCAR season will be spent trying to take the next lap a little faster. But, when I have the opportunity and the time, I am not going to hesitate to speak about issues I am passionate about, or the problems we face together as Americans.
How you vote is none of my business. Instead, I will use what free time I have to highlight the struggle we all feel and share, as Americans.
To my fans, to NASCAR fans and to everyone who has chanted my name: I dedicate myself this upcoming season to compete hard on the racetrack and to spotlight issues that are important to me and to millions of Americans across the country.
"Let's Go America."
Brandon Brown is a professional NASCAR driver and races car number 68 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

we met at a bar, as cliché as that is. everyone meets at bars or clubs. a strange thing it is, in a way, when people meet people. every single one of the scenarios could be considered a cliché now. we ordered our drinks at the same time, and the bartender just laughed at us. i found that irritating, but as i looked over and saw him - i thought i was too intoxicated to really see him. he was vibrant, almost radiant. he smiled, and i didn't. i stared at him for a long while, or until his drink was ready. i don't remember which. it could have been seconds. he didn't walk away - he started conversation. it was clear that he was just drunk as i was. i wasn't in the mood to talk, but his questions... they were insightful, and not just to get a rise out of me, to mock me. they were truly interesting questions, and i couldn't help but think to myself if this was something different. not just picking a stranger up, as i've done several times, but i felt anxious. not just the drink, not just the conversation, but the way i wanted to kiss him. a strange feeling, as i normally don't make my private life public. that scared me in that instant, that i was willing to kiss him there, in the bar.
since then, since we've been sleeping together - i've seen virote in different stages. our sex life is healthy, but some would say that we're too acquainted with each other's bodies, but i've never felt ill toward that. if i were given the chance, i would have sex with him all day. there is no shame in that, not at all. circling to those stages - i've seen him happy, i've seen him depressed. he's seen that in me as well, and we don't judge each other for it. i don't like to admit any personal issues with myself, but virote has seen them. just as i've seen his. i find myself struck with the odd need to help him, to calm him, to soothe him. i didn't think that was possible within myself, to truly care for another person. my world is grey, filled with nothingness. i am indifferent to the settings around me; i've become hollow as the years have gone by. with virote, that has changed. i am terrified to admit that. it's not something i regularly do, and much less something i've felt.
to describe him? in his artwork. i see colors and shapes and flowers and planets. he is all of those things. he's stars in a night sky - the ones that are shaped past the light pollution. he's a windowsill full of flowers, all of them aching to see the sun. i believe in him, and i believe in his talent. i believe in everything that he has come to be with me, and to make each other happy... that's extremely scary. we touch and he's warm, he's kind, and he's funny. i have found myself laughing with him, smiling at him. i'm terrified. my heart thumps, and i see that he's the one increasing the beat. he is a man full of wonderful things, but i think that his own self-hatred gets in the way. you could say that about me as well - i'm realizing that we mirror each other. he's beautiful. he's exciting. he's lovely in a sense that he makes me feel at home. i describe him as someone who has changed my outlook on certain things, no matter how horrible i find this earth to be, and how horrible i see people. virote is different, and he's my splash of color on a blank canvas. artistic, talented, and kind in the way that no one else could be. there's your answer. i apologize if it comes across as strange or limited, but this is talking in a way i thought i'd never do. i... believe that i have feelings for him. deep ones, ones that have planted themselves in me. so, yes, that's it. thank you.
✨ @debtwon. meme. still accepting!
... i—
i keep staring at this because i am just so!!
😭
ahem allow me to break down my thoughts on each paragraph. *snoop dogg voice* greetings, loved ones...
allow me to babble. lol.
vi really has to be in a kind of mood and just drunk enough to talk to another man at a bar, because most of the time he just can’t deal. not that he’s afraid of getting hit on... because no one hits on him like that at bars. but he saw sang-woo sitting there and was very blunt with asking, ‘ why do you look so sad? ’ but not in a condescending way, he just really wanted to know. he wasnt expecting an answer. he wasnt even expecting to be acknowledged, but you know he can’t leave someone sitting there looking sour. so you know he’ll move to better questions... crack some jokes... try to ease any tension you may have... and he tried his hardest with sang-woo. idk something about his eyes. virote found sang-woo terribly beautiful to look at, even with that dark cloud hanging over his head. and he liked his voice and just how... normal he was. grumpy, but normal lol. and interesting. you know virote was the one to hand his number over first in that uber. and they probably sat very, very close in the car until virote got out. and you know when virote got inside and to bed, he just ... was so excited. ... he played it cool tho and texted two days later. didn’t wanna come off as overly thrilled.
sang-woo’s his first, really. we’re not even counting anthony, that dude’s a shithead. first kiss, first person to hold hands with him, first in bed. their initial one night stand was the first time virote ever experienced something like that. ... and it kind of freaked him out, knowing someone genuinely wanted him and didnt find him awful to look at. he’s very insecure when he’s nude. he wont even look at himself in the mirror when hes nude sometimes. gives him anxiety. sure he first thought ‘ oh no, i ruined our friendship by offering my body and now he’s gonna block my number he probably thinks i’m so gross and stupid ’ but tbh he’s just paranoid in that way by nature so after that subsided he decided ‘ i think he might be the only one i ever wanna do stuff like this with. ’ he’s never been happier than he is with sang-woo. just seeing his face... he runs into sang-woo’s arms every single time they link up.
now.... sang-woo’s right in his evaluation of vi... heeeheee. virote’s very bright and full of life despite his uh. issues lgjfgkjfd. despite all those issues, he is very strong-willed. lets say virote is a big field. no clouds in the sky, just sunshine. all the flowers you can think of. and everything’s singing and everyone there is dancing... for vi, sang-woo is the pond there, where it’s quiet and you just sit there and be very, very still... and he luvs that about sang-woo. he can just be quiet. vi’s brain is a whistling tea kettle, it never shuts up. but sang-woo really is the place where he wants to stay because it’s just where he feels peace.
and since stuff’s gonna go to shit w. sang-woo lololol... i’ll just say that virote’s strong will is what’s gonna keep them anchored, hopefully. unshakable resolve... he’s incredible like that....
anyway.
vi’s so in love with him lmao heeeelp
#( 🌙 KEEPSAKE! MOON HEALING ESCALATION. ✨ )#debtwon#/ jasper........#/ i gotta sit down for this....#/ im already sitting but i stood up and sat back down.#/ this turned my entire soul inside OUT!#/ omg sang-woo...#/ virote loves you sang-woo its sooooo stupid he loves you SOOOO much.....#/ he's gonna make u a coffee mug....................

Dark Deity Pre-Release Character Opinions
This isn't actually a tier list, but someone helpfully created a template for this game and it's as good a way as any to do a little visual showcase for this cast. Characters are listed by their class sets, which are fixed but offer a nice variety in terms of promotion options. My opinions on each are as follows, from left to right in each row. Most characters have introductory profiles written up on the DD subreddit, if you'd like to check them out yourself.
Warriors
Alexa
You know those buff female blacksmiths in Echoes and Three Houses that some people wish were playable characters? That's pretty much Alexa. Can't say I'm too hyped about her myself, but warrior + tomboyish female character will do that for me...or not do it, I suppose.
Benji
Seems to have been written to become a meme, and I still can't decide whether that's clever or stupid. Kind of like Raphael only with a bigger emphasis on training than on eating, and with brotherly devotion replaced with brotherly angst that might theoretically go somewhere if the character isn't reduced to being a goofy joke all the time.
Fenton
Doesn't have a character profile, so as far as I know he's just a generic dwarf because DD swaps out its inspiration's loli dragons and other vaguely fetishistic shapeshifters for the two most cliché non-human races in Western fantasy. I wonder whether his VA will voice him with a Scottish accent, to go all in on the (ironic?) laziness. There are a handful of elves in the playable cast, but Fenton is the only dwarf so for better or worse he's representing.
Helena
She's the embodiment of the FE exotic swordswoman archetype, but curiously DD seems to have turned that broad ethnic brush inward. Helena's last name is apparently a Japanese verb, her art shows her with a spear (as in the association of the naginata with women), and she studied and trained in a monastery that seems to blend elements of Buddhism and Shintoism. Not sure how all that fits into the larger setting yet, but at this point she's still got more background development than Petra.
Irving
Our Hero, the one front and center on the cover art. He sounds a bit on the blander side as far as lords or lord equivalents go, with his most promising hook for me being his established friendship with Garrick (see the ranger section). At best I can hope for a bit of a romantic friendship dynamic, although they sound a bit rougher overall as they're military academy schoolmates I wonder why DD went with that instead of lordlings of different territories.
Rogues
Brooke
Looks like Camilla; has a backstory like Niles. Cleavage aside though the sexual element of both is toned down here, and there might be some sapphic bodyguard shenanigans to be had as her current employers are a pair of highborn sisters further down this list.
Cia
For some reason she reminds me of Tressa from Octopath Traveler, only bustier and a bartender rather than a merchant. She's still just a small town girl with big city dreams, and this being a tactical war game following those dreams will inevitably involve stabbing people.
Corvan
Hard to judge him at the moment, as his profile was only the second written and so isn't terribly detailed. He's a moon elf with scholarly interests, apparently. Still, as of right now he's the only rogue who doesn't slot loosely into either a ninja/assassin or pirate aesthetic, so that's kind of neat. Also, he's one of several characters to have FEH-esque beach fanart made of them already, so clearly someone's into elf twinks.
Ford
A former officer at the military academy Irving attends and a smuggler who dotes on his niece, Ford has major dad energy. Per developer reveals he's also bi, and as I mentioned before I'm totally fine with that. More bear sex, please - but what guy in this cast would hop in the sack with Ford? Only time will tell. His personal skill makes him extra dodgy, which combined with the mug of booze in his art makes me think of WoW brewmasters who dodge-tank through the power of being wasted.
Wren
Like Brooke, he's an assassin from a foreign nation - in his case the same one as Helena so presumably he's a not!Japanese ninja. I'm not really feeling him at the moment. What is it about Hao'Fen (the city/territory he and Helena come from) and massive families? That comes up in both their backstories.
Rangers
Caius
I feel like this is the third or fourth character to grow up in some slum or other; at least they've all been in different towns so far. The relative rarity of noble characters is certainly different from FE, but it reduces the political stakes which leaves me wondering a bit about the story. Anyway, Caius is a small town desert hunter who learned how to make arrows out of animal bones. How aerodynamic is bone, I wonder?
Garrick
Irving's BFF and seemingly the Hector to Irving's Eliwood, only with more flirting (his intro doesn't specify that Garrick is flirting with women, but I'm not going so far as to say that indicates anything). He's the academy headmaster's son, with a strained relationship with his father for some of that hotheaded lead tension. Notably, his VA is the one I'm most familiar with in this cast, as he's the voice of Revali from Breath of the Wild as well as love interests in two different erotic gay dating sims I've played. In other words, I know what this guy sounds like making awkwardly simulated sex noises...and I have no idea what to do with that information.
Maeve
She's a half-elf with a very storied background, so much so that it's all rather hard to follow her exploits when little of what's being described has been fully revealed yet. I'm expecting her to be a mid/lategame recruit, unless she's dropped in early on to reveal that (sun) elves exist or something.
Rose
Imagine if Bernadetta were a commoner, although we can only hope they'll be less screaming. Alternatively, Neimi without an obvious boyfriend. She won the beach contest so now she has official swimsuit art, which I guess makes her a top-tier waifu in the eyes of players who care about such things.
Sophia
A ranger in the "has animal companions" sense, although whether that will come into play mechanically aside from her personal skill - Butter the ferret can attack with her! - remains to be seen. Her preference for the company of animals is explained by a lack of social graces, so prepare for klutz-related humor. Of note to those interested in F/F is that her introduction specifically brings up her connection with Sloane (see the mage section) and how close the two of them are.
Clerics
Faust
Doesn't have a profile yet, so not much to go off other than his decidedly unhinged look. The cleric class set does feature some darker-flavored options, so presumably he's more naturally aligned with those. His VA was announced to be the YouTuber behind So This is Basically Fire Emblem and other similar videos, so I'm picturing a kooky and somewhat demented Henry type.
Lincoln
Also lacks a profile at time of writing...clerics get so little love. The Discord has identified him a bland blond paladin sort, but as we know from the likes of Perceval and especially Dimitri that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be boring (or not gay).
Maren
The soft-spoken healer type, and also a childhood friend of Garrick although her intro sibling-zones him but then this game is inspired by FE so who knows if that'll stick. She may have some interesting thoughts on the theology of the setting, as there seem to be several faiths and she's said to have a complicated relationship with her own. I will be utterly shocked if she's not either Irving or Garrick's eventual love interest.
Samara
One of two princesses of the country of Aramor, which appears to be loosely inspired by the Middle East. Heaven help us if the Khalidstans ever get wind of this game. Unfortunately aside from her bond with her older sister (in the mage section) and the knowledge that Brooke has been hired as their bodyguard there's not much to Samara at the moment. Hopefully the clerics all do some comparative theology in their bond conversations, and this isn't like Sacred Stones where none of the clergy characters from different countries ever compare notes. The succession crisis involving Samara and her sister vs. their less-loved cousin the king's son might be a major plot hook? It's still too early to tell.
Vesta
Much like Maeve her backstory has entirely too much going on to really follow at the moment. Basically she's a human who grew up in a sun elf city because Reasons (seriously, I don't know what they are) and was called to a clerical vocation and also something about taking a journey. Has an unfortunate case of silly boob armor, which unlike a certain other character probably won't be rectified this close to release.
Mages
Alden
Maren's precocious younger brother, also basically Ricken up to and including the comically oversized hat. As a unit he follows the tradition of Donnel, Mozu, and Cyril of having a personal skill that buffs his stat gains, so it's safe to say he's a growth unit. At least he'll probably join early.
Liberty
Comes with dead brother angst and a connection to the "aspects" system that will hopefully make more sense once I've played the game and know how it functions both mechanically and from a storytelling perspective. Otherwise she looks to be a busty older - as in, not a teenage - mage in the vein of Calill.
Monroe
Got the first ever character profile, so it's really short. He's the son of a duke and sounds like a bit of a snob, albeit one that can make explosions happen to back up his haughtiness. He's got some scarring around his eye that surely must come with a story. Someone also made featured fanart of him in Heroes summer banner style, so I guess he's got somebody horny already.
Sara
Samara's half-sister, with comparable fantasy Middle Eastern flavoring. Has an interest in discovering magical artifacts and being a just ruler in the event she winds up on the throne (so, almost definitely), and she and Samara travel around with the assassin Brooke as their bodyguard. There's maybe some lesbian possibilities there? Either way, Sara has enough development where I could see her as a major supporting character.
Sloane
Comes with a genuinely fascinating backstory involving manipulative double-crossing parents, an education in the cruelties and deceptions of social life (reflected in her personal skill), and disinheritance - and yet it's all likely to be overshadowed because she may go down as DD's equivalent to Fates's face-touching. Her initial art is even more revealing than Camilla's, and while the developers later gave her a more modest redesign after negative feedback I get the feeling that this controversy may live on. Her introduction mentions her hunting for both heirs and heiresses and she's now been linked to Sophia, so safe to say she's another confirmed bi character.
Adepts
While the other class sets are standard fantasy fare adepts require a bit more explanation. They have innate magical abilities and appear to be feared and distrusted most places in the setting. Functionally they remind me of adepts from the Golden Sun series, if anyone is familiar with those games. The classes in the adept group tend more toward physical/magical hybridization than those of other sets, so that will probably be their mechanical niche. Oh, and their default weapon type is lances, which is a plus in my book.
Aurima
Along with Caius and the royal sisters, he's another one from the desert nation of Aramor. An arena fighter who got touched by a god in what I assume was a non-sexual way and came out of it with a new appearance and adept powers. Also, he's confirmed to be over 40 - how often do you see that in games like this?
Bianca
Looks like a more carefree Mathilda from Echoes. She's a ranking officer in the Delian army which sounds like it'd sit uneasily with her adept powers. Her profile describes Lincoln as her close friend, which is still about the most we know about him at this point.
Elias
This guy's writing plays more into the fairly standard coding that comes with adept powers, as we know they manifested shortly before he was going to confess his feelings to a male paramour and afterwards he was forced to flee his homeland and wander the world. He also spent time among dwarves, so insert short bear jokes here? In the present he's attached to Cia in what seems to be a platonic way; maybe she's a fruit fly, or maybe she just likes having a friend who can light drunken assholes on fire? Elias is definitely into guys, but I would still be a little surprised if he turned out to be totally gay as that's such a rarity in these sorts of things.
Iris
Oof, another lengthy and rough backstory. Iris had better parents than Sloane, but she also had to deal with permanent facial scarring (hence the mask) after a bandit kidnapping and the stigma of manifesting as an adept pretty much eliminating the prospects of her making a good political marriage. Also, she and Elias both come from Neullais, which is prominently featured on the continental map on the DD subreddit but doesn't seem to come up all too often in backstories. I think it's a not!France? Hard to tell.
Thae'lanel
A World of Warcraft blood elf, flowing anime hair and apostrophe'd name and all. I like WoW so that's not terribly grating, but as he has no profile yet there's little else I can say. Thae'lanel is mentioned in Maeve's introduction as a member of a sun elf group called the Exiled, which I'm guessing is tied to his adept status in some way. He and Maeve form yet another adventurer/bodyguard duo.

Conversation
RP Meme Lines from "AHS: Coven" Episode 11: "Protect the Coven"
Why I had to leave Paris, the jewel of civilization, return to this shit hole, I'll never understand.
They have no inner light.
They have no intellect to engage with.
I fear my restless mind will become feeble.
I need inspiration.
I hear crochet is popular in New Orleans.
Do I have to bother with this thing?
Do I have to kill it?
Please don't make me.
Give me that cleaver.
How hard can it be to chop the head off a chicken?
I'm hurt bad.
Should I run and find a doctor?
We want to stop that blood.
I think I'm going to like it here.
What can be done?
Bitch, you left me for dead.
Oh, get your ass over here.
That's for dismembering me.
The most important thing is that you're safe.
None of us are safe!
I've been suffering the tortures of the damned.
I'm not taking another step!
I suppose I was an unhappy child.
I kept to myself, communing with rodents and small animals.
No one thought I'd amount to much, but I surprised them all.
I married well.
My lavish soirées became a coveted invitation.
It goes perfectly with the wine.
How the mighty have fallen does not begin to describe my torment.
I've been giving plenty thought to how I'm gonna deal with you.
Thinking this time, I'll finish what I started.
Stick that head of yours in a construction site shit hole.
You seem half mad, dear.
I think this could amplify it.
Ah, figs, ah, figs, Mother Nature's brown diamonds.
Figgy pudding cures the blues and banishes acne.
Lately, I've been asking myself just what was it that fed my soul back then.
I just... developed a scientific fascination for their... their body parts and their... their organs... and their cries of agony.
Oh, what have we here, a romantic bubble bath?
Don't you care at all?
So it wouldn't bother you if I got on my knee pads and blew him, right here, right now.
You're a peach.
You think you can just throw me away for some junior varsity mall rat?
He's not your slave.
God, you're such a brat!
What is all that racket?!
You are the worst kind of Hollywood cliché
You're a dried-up old Hot Pocket, but I don't judge.
You can't speak to me that way-- I am your elder.
Crotchless panties for everyone.
Well, putting you together was fun but taking you apart's gonna be even more fun.
Ah, go slow with that.
I want to take you there.
We'll spend out the rest of our days drinking gin rickeys on this porch.
What's so funny?
Oh, imagine me a farm wife. Milking the cows.
Well, you've lived a big life.
You went everywhere, you've met everyone, you've done everything that your stormy little heart desired.
But you were never ever truly happy, huh?
We could live like normal folk for a change.
Not very robust, were you?
Feel better?
I thought you'd run off.
One doesn't explain art.
I thought you were tongueless.
Are you saying you're dead?
I spent enough time in the grave to know a spirit when I encounter one.
I've been watching you.
A life without purpose is no life at all.
I thought I'd found my purpose. Or at least a hobby.
I think I just made a mess.
Guess who gets to clean it up.
You long for release.
I know how you can achieve it.
I've been cursed.
It's a violation of the natural order.
Why do you care?
The bitch is immortal.
Are you saying I can kill her?
I can provide you with the means. But you have to do something for me first.
It won't be cheap.
Dirty hippie can kiss my ass.
Things around here change fast, but damn.
You are a very strong and powerful young woman.
But how did you survive?
Turns out I got some new powers.
He shot you with this?
Not even a silver bullet can stop me.
Don't touch me.
My eyes are open.
You are just as weak as you've ever been.
Might want to take one long-ass vacation. Let somebody else run this joint for a while.
No enemies on the outside perhaps, but danger lurks within these blanched walls.
Everyone knows it.
I have no secrets.
I deserve better lies than that.
I just need a drink. Steady my nerves.
I've done what you asked.
You're sure this is the original gown?
There's a certificate of authenticity in there somewhere.
It's unsavory.
Now, before somebody notices that half the silver's gone missing, you give me what you promised me.
It's that powerful?
You'll be blinded by the sheer craftsmanship.
A sapphire and topaz harvester ant made for me by Joel Arthur Rosenthal, the Fabergé of our time.
Do you want me to wear it?
You could never pull it off, darling.
I want you to hock it in case of emergency.
I'm completely lost here.
I had a love like that once.
If you stay here, your life is in grave danger.
Run away together and start your life over.
How dare you be so unromantic and so very, very selfish.
Be ready for anything, but keep the dogs at bay.
This war, it's a thing of the past.
Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to rid the State Department of Communists.
This is the end.
God knows all the money in the world can't buy good taste.
Too much?
You got any last words?
To the beginning of a long, long friendship.
Only thing that could ruin this moment is to have to look at your fugly face.
I'll leave when I'm finished.
Stupid cow!
I'm not finished.
Your fate is sealed.
Oh, you stupid rube!
Damn you. Damn you!
The only thing I'm allergic to is you.
You were most likely to cooperate.
You have to finish packing.
I have these feelings inside that I can't... I can't control.
We're leaving, just like planned.

Meme Questions
2 & 3
9 & 10
13 & 14
40: When It’s All Over
2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
I’ve actually never done a true “only one bed” fic. I don’t count the start of “Slowly Learning” because there wasn’t that sexual tension and nervous energy that comes with the full exploration of the “only one bed” trope. It might be cliché, but it's something I've been thinking about.
3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?
I’ve talked about my least favorite trope before, and it's likely that I'm not going to be writing about it any time soon.
9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?
This current one, "Nothing Like You", actually. I was having such a tough time getting words on the page that I just started posting to give myself deadlines so that I'd have something. I've been pretty good about making them so far, but it's been difficult.
10. Which fic had been the easiest to write?
"Step Into Your Power", by virtue of a large chunk of it being other people's writing. Similar story with "Where the Law Leaves Off".
13. What's the best writing advice you've ever come across?
Writing advice is such a personal thing that it's hard to point to anything specific that really fuels me that would be applicable to anyone else. But I will say that "write what you know" is extremely misunderstood advice, and it's not supposed to be a limiting way of thinking. It's supposed to send you out to learn shit so you can write about it. You think I know what it's like to be an anthropomorphic duck? No. But I'm still writing about it.
14. What's the worst writing advice you've ever come across?
I had a professor in college tell me that I shouldn't write about a story I had been working on for almost 10 years because I'd been working on it for too long. The only part of the writing that he liked was a scene that I had never written before. He didn't like much of what I wrote. I'm not saying you shouldn't take input from people who don't like your writing, just make sure that they're putting in the effort to understand what it is you've put in front of them.
I'm still working on that story, btw.
I'm going to thank you for the asks here, so that it's above the cut hiding the answer to the last question. Thank you so much!
40. Write an alternative ending to [When It's All Over], or at least a summary of one.
We're going to go with summary because that was a long-ass fic, and basically the entire second half would have to change to have any real difference in the ending.
Here's the Bad Ending to "When It's All Over"
It starts with Gyro dying in the Cube at the hands of Borg!Fenton. They manage to get him back to Penny's ship before he goes and Della admits that she has feelings for him and kisses him as he dies. Everyone is demoralized, and Gandra can't get all the Evronian tech out of Fenton before they touch down. While he's in surgery, Borg!Fenton attacks his doctors, killing some, and assimilating the others. Fenton has become an Erigus.
The Cube arrives over Duckburg and Donald goes up to face Evron alone.
Della realizes that Mallory's project is Evronian tech and arranges to get Mallory and Lena up to the ship to take out the engine. Huey and Gosalyn stow away. In the hospital, Drake and Gandra are being hunted by Borg!Fenton. Gandra is killed when she stops Borg!Fenton from spearing Drake through with one of his robot arm tentacles (which he has now, for reasons). Parts of Fenton start to wake up and become aware of what he's done and what he's doing. Drake tries to call in for back-up, but can't get a message out.
Up on the Cube, Huey and Gosalyn go to try and help Donald with Evron. Huey picks up the Chi-blade and spears it through Evron, defeating the Heartless inside, but killing Donald and leaving his spirit trapped in Kingdom Hearts forever. The Chi-blade is split in two. When Gosalyn tries to help Huey with it, she is burned with magic fire from the inside out.
Lena, Mallory, and Della make it to the engine block, and Lena is able to absorb the power into her arm like last time. The experience permanently blinds Mallory and Della stays behind to activate the Cube's self-destruct mechanism. She and Huey are still on board when the Cube goes up.
Drake is chased down and cornered by Borg!Fenton, who is fighting and losing against Evron's tech. Drake is mortally wounded by one of the Evronian controlled tentacle arms. Drake tears the Evronian tech off of Fenton's head and Fenton has a moment of clarity right before Drake dies. By the time Morgana and Capt. Cabrera find Fenton, he's blacked out and lost too much blood to be revived. He dies lying in Drake's arms.

Could I please have some Gerard/Patrick fics please? I feel like I've exhausted the "well-known" ones.
Hi Nonny!
I don't know which ones are well-known but I hope some of these are new for you!
Patrick/Gerard
Pastel Punk? by TeddyBearDoctors, 754 words, General Audiences. Patrick thinks his hair is lame compared to his friends so Gerard and Pete come over to cut and dye it
A World That Sends You Reeling by SunshineAndRoseWater, 26k, Mature. In the year 2019 the world ended and a City arose to bring back civilization and order. Mikey, unsatisfied with life in the City, flees into the desert to become a Killjoy. Gerard is reluctant to follow. He’s a single parent with child to take care of, he can’t just go chasing fantasies anymore. Then tragedy strikes. Gerard follows Mikey into the desert where he gets picked up by the Killjoys and becomes Party Poison. Soon Gerard finds being the leader of the Killjoys isn't easy and if he doesn't fulfill his role there will be consequences. This is a story about ideas and how other people misinterpret them.
the hardest part of this by orphan_account, 6k, Teen And Up Audiences. Patrick lost Elisa. Gerard and Lindsey divorced. Misery tends to find itself, but it gets a little complicated when other things come into play.
instant crush by orphan_account, 18k, Teen And Up Audiences. “Let me get this straight.” Gerard takes a drag of the cigarette in his hand and leans against the side of the bus, looking like some broody teenager. Patrick has no doubt he’d look cool if he was in his own body, but his actions just make Patrick look like that nerdy kid in high school trying to fit in with the popular crowd. “Last night I wished I knew how to deal with Pete Wentz, and overnight we’ve somehow switched bodies.” “Yeah, that’s about right.” Patrick sighs and runs a hand down his face. “Look, I know this kind of sucks—” “This is so fucking cool!” Patrick jumps at the sudden exclamation, and when he stares at Gerard, he can tell from the blatant excitement on his face that Gerard hasn’t heard a single thing Patrick’s said. “No, really, this is just like a fucking comic book, man!”
All My Thoughts of You by Aubrie1234, 25k, Teen And Up Audiences. The first time Patrick realized he was in love with Gerard, he thought it was more of a ‘pair the spares’ moment. The second time he fell in love, he knew that hadn’t been the case. Gerard was no happy accident that happened to stumble into his life. As convoluted as it was, he had to thank Pete’s relationship with Mikey for helping him to fall in love with the perfect guy. But is it really all that perfect?
When The Lights Go Out by geetrick, 2k, Mature. When Patrick gets assigned to investigate a cabaret that is allegedly the home of illegal magical activity, he knew it would be hard to fight against something he agreed with. It gets harder when he falls in love with one of the performers.
Merry Christmas, I Could Care Less by Snapjinxx, 22k, Teen And Up Audiences. If there was one thing Patrick Stump hated above all else, it was trains. Even more so than the holiday season, or the idea of falling in love. If there was one thing Gerard Way loved above all else, it was trains. Even more so than the holiday season, or the idea of falling in love. What will happen when fate brings the two polar opposites together on a busy train travelling across the country the week before Christmas? This is a story done in the style of a Hallmark Christmas movie, so be prepared for a jumble of holiday clichés and romantic comedy tropes. This is one of the happiest, fluffiest stories I'll ever write.
Haunted Grounds by Fueled_by_Revenge, 224k, Explicit. When Patrick got a music scholarship for a school in New Jersey, his best friends jumped on board with him and drove across several states to go to the same school.Gerard, on the other hand, was an art school graduate stuck in a rut working at a bookstore. But recently, he was very thankful that Patrick ended up in New Jersey.
Think Twice by thePetetoherPatrick, 876 words, Explicit. “One of these days you’re going to say that and I will completely blow your mind.” Gerard chuckled and shook his head at his friend. “Sure you will, Tricky.”
Dance Miserable by Tealroots, 3k, Teen And Up Audiences. Patrick tries to impress Gerard at a party.
Thnks Fr Th Mmrs by TeddyBearDoctors, 2k, Mature. Patrick and Gerard slept together on Warped Tour but went their separate ways without admitting how stupidly in love they were. 2011, Patrick is touring for his Soul Punk album and Gerard comes to one of his shows in Jersey, love is confessed and sex is involved. Happy boys~
My Love, When You Dream Them Up by orphan_account, 231 words, Teen And Up Audiences. "Not like you'll ever know that."
Hope in Sight by SunshineAndRoseWater, 913 words, General Audiences. “You're not a burden, Gerard. I just want you to know that. I love you and I wouldn't trade you for the world.”
What If This Was All Different? by orphan_account, 18k, Teen And Up Audiences. What if the bands formed differently? What if Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance and such had never existed because they never came about? What if the people had met each other differently? What if the bands made weren’t what we expected?
Come Hell or High Water by caimani, 3k, Teen And Up Audiences. Gerard and Patrick are witches. They're a bit disorganized and absentminded at times; nevertheless, they're skilled at their craft. And they're very normal, friendly residents, so the last postman can fuck off.
how far down by orphan_account, 4k, Explicit. Written for no_tags at Dreamwidth, for the following prompt: "Gerard/Patrick, bb dom Patrick (any gender) is tempted to top the shit out of prettyboy hooker!Gerard. i would prefer this be consensual as far as real-world pressures go; feel free to include consent play in sex scenes!"
Trope Meme Ficlets by alpheratz, 351 words, pg. Patrick/Gerard pretending to be married
Tastes Like Blue by J (jaywright), 1k, General Audiences. "Don't take this the wrong way, man, but I doubt your ability to reach his face with your foot."
Asskicking Is Just One of the Services We Offer by J (jaywright), 637 words, General Audiences. "You're a good guy, Joe Trohman."
Sing Ourselves to Sleep by Dira Sudis (dsudis), 4k, Teen And Up Audiences. Being exhausted is nothing like being drunk, but some nights Gerard gets too tired to remember that.
My Boyfriend Is in Love with Holden Caulfield by Dira Sudis (dsudis), 535 words, Teen And Up Audiences. "I can't believe I had sex with you! You're serious!"

I never thought I'd write about "love" again but here I am
You ever been with someone you can never "be with?" A friendship that you know has much more to offer but also too much to lose?
Crap, it's that cheesy romcom cliché from Christmas 2008. My Jai has fallen for an Aditi. And I'm mulling about whether we should have that "talk" when we Zoom tonight.
Maybe they'll explain that they don't see me that way and this would complicate things. Heck, maybe they'll point out how we're from different backgrounds, countries, jobs, and religions - and I'll have to clarify that it's these differences I love the most. It's starting to feel like a Toastmaster's debate.
If I have to be both realistic and happy, I'm hoping that they'll smile, appreciate me for sharing my feelings, and promise to help me get over it eventually. Such mature discussion. Much wow.
Scenarios. Scenarios. Scenarios. As I'm slinging through the multiverse created by my anxiety-ridden, 23-year-old brain, I have to say that there's something different about this person that's keeping me awake. There has to be.
Because I thought I left behind this topic in my emo teen phase. With poems that I took the effort to rhyme lmaoooo. But its almost after an entire decade that I'm finding myself chirping down this path again. Spring in my step and all. So the writer in me is definitely curious.
See first of all, there wasn't a love-at-first-sight moment. It wasn't full of butterflies and crazy adventures. In fact, I can't pinpoint a specific day when I understood that I wanted more. There weren't any explosive fireworks. The hunch grew more like five sips of chai. Normal, comforting, simple. Like how you move into a new house and then it eventually becomes your home for no good reason. And you get into a cozy routine.
I have spent so much time in their company doing jackshit. This one day we camped in our university's library. On our own laptops doing our own assignments. When the guards told us it was time to leave, we walked out talking about how well-spent the day was and we should definitely do it again.
It's not like we haven't had fun together. We've hung out, flown to new cities. We've eaten with forks at fancy brunches and also ravaged through banana leaf buffets like Savannah lions.
We've also had the craziest of talks. From junk gossips to deep philosophical musings at 3AM. They once looked down at the dimly lit highway and told me how every passing car must have people with complex lives and stories that we'll never hear. Trippy? Well, you should see our chats, you'd think we're in the stratosphere.
But floating in between all that noise are many blank pages that weigh just as much. Silences I never felt obligated to fill. Sometimes, we just lie around and chill.
Which tells me that this new kind of love I'm discovering ... this love isn't all shining and glamorous. After all that excitement fades away, there's a cozy blanket of silence that takes over. You don't have to go on extravagant holidays to relax. You don't have to buy each other costly gifts to feel special. You don't have to upload Stories of everything you do together. There's nothing to prove to the world, nothing to show off.
Instead, it's the simple gestures. They're both noticed and reciprocated. The person's company is more than enough. And you no longer have to do only wild things to feel like you had a good time.
If you can feel happy cutting a cupcake in the dark and call it a party, when its not even your birthday, that's when you realize they're the one.
Mind you, even if there's comfort, there's also discomfort. I like that we call each other out on our bullshit. They don't just pretend to agree with all my decisions or opinions because I'm their best friend. In fact, there are so many things we do openly disagree on and also furiously debate about.
We also hold each other accountable for our mistakes. I have a loud mouth and when I leak something in a public conversation that I shouldn't have, they will remind me that I can do better.
This could've been a toxic or abusive thing where we're constantly pushing each other's buttons. But its not the case because toxic relationships rely on fear. The fear of causing damage. But when we discuss our issues, we're not afraid of permanently ruining or breaking things.
We understand that we cannot realistically always like each other. Sometimes, I will hate her. And I'll say it. They'll say they hate me even more. Sometimes I'll be so pissed off at something silly they did. But I won't feel bad or guilty about it. We respect these negative emotions and agree that we can be imperfect and kinda off on some days. These fleeting currents and tiny problems don't threaten our bond. I speak for both of us when I say we have this unbreakable faith that we'll always be able to 'work it out together.'
When you call someone your 'loved one,' it means they're signing up for the whole package. Which occasionally includes confusion, misunderstandings, disappointment, and hurt.
If you can openly talk about all your feelings and problems without having to worry about losing them, that's when you realize they're the one.
But all that said, I think the most special thing about this special person is how they make me want to be better without ever having to push me ahead.
What I mean is that they're a forever fan. At gatherings, they'll take me around like I'm Barack Obama and introduce me to all their friends, raving about the 'cool projects' I'm working on this year. They're my biggest cheerleader, hyper-supporter, and meme-liker to the point of cringe. When I'm down and sobbing about how I suck, they'll tell me to shut up and refuse to believe that I'm anything less than the best.
I feel immensely relaxed knowing that I'll always be good enough for them, even when I'm not good enough for myself. See, it's not a conditional contract. There's this underlying assurance that they'll be cheering me for me even when I'm behind, even when I finish last. I don't have to constantly worry about proving myself to them or living up to their 'expectations.'
A relationship of any kind and degree shouldn't feel constantly challenging, uncomfortable, and stressful. That kind of bullshit is often sold under the guise of tough love or training. But you shouldn't feel like you're dragging yourself to please or impress the person.
Because love is safety. It's like a soft sandpit in which we can become kids again and build whatever the fuck we want to. And when we have no power left, it's a force that burns through every fiber of our soul and gives us that last bit of fire to hold on. "Hold on," it says, "We're almost there."
This safe zone my special person has created without even realizing it ... it just makes me want to push myself every day. Their fierce belief in me makes me want to fight, even when I don't want to do it for myself. In fact, it was this person who once told me that we can't always love ourselves and that's why we need friends who can remind us of how worthy we are.
If they make you feel empowered to chase your dreams fearlessly, you know they're the one.
Now that I've said these things out loud, I guess I know that they're really the one.
But I don't feel prepared to tell them yet so I'm going to wait for some more time. I'm not rushing into things. It's perfectly acceptable. And anyway, I'm not worried about being too late. I won't regret telling them right away.
You know how I'm so sure?
Because love is, above all, friendship. And I have it right here, right now.
