remember this?
The candles lit the space around them but cast Simon’s face partially in shadow. His eyes were dark, locked right on Wilhelm, watching him, as he had been all night. The curve of his back, a silhouette Wilhelm would not soon forget, staggered the heights of the candles placed there, like little warm homesteads dotting the horizon of a hillscape. They rose and fell as Simon drew in steady breaths, carefully, so as not to disturb the precarious balance of the pillars of wax.
Behind him, lights danced across the wall as the seven flames flickered and pulsed in some phantom breeze. There was a painting above Wilhelm’s bed, one he’d done himself years ago and decided to keep. It depicted a lakeside from his home country, a memory of childhood and innocence. Wilhelm itched to take Simon there, to show him the beauty of Sweden, to show him the beauty of the world. To say, Look. Look at all these masterpieces, these unbelievable creations of this planet, and feel it, feel how it overwhelms and steals your breath. To say, Know that you have ruined it for me, because nothing, no painting or sculpture, no mountain or waterfall, will ever again compare to the way I feel when I look at you.

11. 🌈 RAINBOW SLOTH
for this ask game.
🌈 RAINBOW SLOTH: Wild card! Share one thing about your WIP that you have been waiting to be asked about!
i'm going to choose to interpret that question as this: do i write grimdark fiction?
i've been thinking about this topic lately due to this poll by @namelessscribe. through it, i was introduced to the opposing term "noblebright" and its intermediaries, "nobledark" and "grimbright." the grim/noble bit is defined by the protagonist's ability to improve, or 'save', the world around them, while the dark/bright bit is defined by the general atmosphere of the setting.
my settings, as a rule, aren't all that happy. the iron crown is set in 11th century italy (with magic!), which almost by definition isn't going to be the greatest place to live. blood of gods' setting is based on several time periods, namely early renaissance italy with a healthy splash of reconquista-era spain/general crusader europe, none of which i would trade for the modern day. now, i do try to avoid writing historical(ly inspired) settings as complete rape-fests where everyone is a backwards, violent, "unenlightened" mind, as that's neither accurate or (imo) all that fun to read about. but my settings do deal with the abuses of a feudal society, alongside issues such as misogyny, homophobia, religious bigotry, and war. these issues are often a central theme in my works. objectively, those settings cannot be deemed "bright."
i'm also utterly uninterested in writing stories about characters who save the world. i feel it's a bit overdone in fantasy, but moreso i think it's a reflection of my personal philosophy. to define history as a series of 'great men' who come to power and change the world is to deny the greater power of the collective and wider historical trends that are bigger than any one person. of course, the great man theory of history makes for incredible stories, but for me personally i think seeking a greater level of realism is more interesting. my characters cannot and will not save the world, because no one can. but they can try, and maybe they'll fail, or maybe they'll succeed in a small way. whether or not those good deeds matter in the long run is up to the reader. perhaps that makes my stories 'grim.'
i suppose technically, my stories then could be considered 'grimdark.' but the term has certain connotations that don't apply to my work. i don't write warhammer 40k-esque stories without hope or good people. my stories are full of good people and love and hope for the future. maybe the world is shit, and maybe they can't change it in any meaningful way, but that's just how real life is. no matter how bad things get, there will always people who love one another, who hope, who want to make things better even if only in a small way. i think that matters, and so i write it.
what can i say? i'm a dogged optimist, and that infects just about everything i write.

13, 16, 17, and 27 for the historical asks ❤️
Oh my gosh! So many questions! :D Thank you for the ask, my lovely!
13) Something random about some random historical person in a random era.
Here is an interesting fact about Dante Alighieri, one of my favourite writers/poets.
Dante was the first writer who used a different language other than the commonly used Latin. Instead, he promoted the use of a more easily accessible vernacular language, based on the dialect of his beloved Florence. His treatise De vulgari eloquentia (On the Eloquence of the Vernacular), outlines the ways in which promoting the vernacular language is better for unification of the people. He was essentially a pioneer in this, and his views on language will be instrumental several centuries later, when Italy finally unifies.
Another fun fact, the "Italian" that is typically taught in schools and which is heard on the news is based on Dante's early Florentine vernacular.
16) Do you own some historical item? (coin, clothing, weapons, books, etc) If yes which one is your favourite?
Sadly, I do not. My husband has some fancy printings of famous books, but they're just a fancy version of them. I wish I did, though.
17) What historical item would you like to own?
I answered this question in another ask, but I can try to think of another answer. I really love period clothing. I've been wanting to try and find retro-style clothing for myself because they're just really gorgeous. I really like clothing from the 40s and 50s in particular. So, if I could get like a wardrobe of various period clothing and learn how to wear them, I'd be very very happy. :)
27) Favourite historical “ What if… ” ?
Oh man, this is GOOD one. Ok so I LOVE finding videos on YouTube that dive into these What If... scenarios. It's always fun to look at massive historical events, and see how the patterns of history would have changed had something not happened the way that it did.
One of my favourite What Ifs to follow is about The Black Death and what would have happened if it just never had the massive impact it did, or if it just never occurred.
Now The Black Death (the medieval one) had a DEVASTATING toll on the world. In Europe, it wiped out nearly a third of its entire population. This had an effect on the economy, as now workers were able to demand better wages and respect from their Lords, or simply move out of the farms and into the cities.
During the Black Death, a LOT of people lost faith in the Catholic Church, leading to an era where philosophy flourished, as well as hedonism and an appreciation for beauty. I think you know where I'm going with this... The Renaissance.
But, what if it didn't happen? What would change? The YouTube channel AlternateHistoryHub does a pretty decent dive into the What If scenario here, so I encourage a watch if you're interested. Take care though, he goes in depth about the Plague and its effects, and talks about the rampant anti-sematism that occurred during this time.
youtube
He presents a very bleak alternate history, talking about overpopulation and a severe shortage of food and resources. Feudalism stays in tact, no peasant revolts, no shift in culture. He does makes it clear that it wouldn't mean we'd all be serfs to this day, but that certain shifts would have taken a lot longer to occur.
Really fascinating stuff.
ASK ME THE HISTORY QUESTIONS PLEASE!

Following an advice given by my friend @flamaflavio I've decided to dedicate a series of posts on Northern Italy(because there's a serious lack of them in the fandom:(),whether they might be about culture, history, folklore, stereotypes(could be an interesting addition to characterization)or misconceptions*? Maybe even cuisine ahah
In this post I'll expain what we intend for North Italy, why it doesn't line up perfectly with canon and most importantly why Feli gets called "Italy" way more often than Mano.
Let's start by stating that in our country by North Italy we mean the regions of: Aosta Valley (Valle d'Aosta), Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria(the region your girl's from), Lombardy(Lombardia), Piedmont (Piemonte), Veneto and Trentino Alto-Adige.
Tumblr media
So you might ask me, why is it that in Hetalia Chibitalia has been shown as Florence as well??? Is it a mistake made by Hima?? Yes.. But actually no ahah! In this post I'll cover how we came to such a perception of the North in our country and why Tuscany and the rest of Central Italy, isn't included in it and doesn't consider themselves part of it :D
I won't talk about all history until nowadays of course (I'll definitely make future historical posts) I'll simply give you basic information based on early history to have an understanding of how us italians divide our country and why in canon other nations refer to Feliciano as Italy more commonly than they do with Romano(it is indeed based in history, it's not mean spirited!!).
So during the centuries prior to romanization North Italy was inhabited by a different bunch of cultures, among them the long haired Ligures(whose origin is unsure,Celtic?? Or simply celtified by their neighbors uhmm?? Talking about them in detail would take a whole ass post) the Veneti who were known for their commerce of amber and horse breeding, the Etruscans who, coming from Tuscany, colonised parts of the North and founded cities such as Bologna and in a later period a swarm of Gaulish tribes(generally referred to as the Celts).
The latter(most likely the Insubres) founded Milan in 590 BC, naming it Medhelan(the place in the middle of the plain, or among rivers) or Mediolanum as the Roman would call it later(Meśiolano as a Celtic engraving informs us) keep Milan in mind we'll come back to her later. Their domain extended from the Alps to the Adriatic sea.
This would be stopped by roman conquest that would culminate in 194 BC in the foundation of a province under the name of Gallia Cisalpina**,Cisalpine Gaul, id est Gaul on the hither side of the Alps(from the Romans point of view) that pretty much contained the regions which nowadays we consider North Italy.
The area became one of the most influential and rich provinces in the empire and it's strategic role is emphasized by the fact that in 286 the capital of the Western Roman Empire is moved from Rome to,guess where, Milan the main city in Gallia Cisalpina(and later on in Ravenna from 402 to the fall).
Is this why Grandpa is shown to leave poor Romano behind in canon in favour of his little brother??? Most likely!!! Btw if you're interested in the subject you should totally check out jjblue's Italia Annonaria (baby Feli) and Italia Suburbicaria (baby Mano) profiles on DA.
It's really unfair that the other characters call only Feliciano Italy:/ It's actually not true, as my friend flama has talked about in one her posts both Germany and America have called him Italy in the past. The fact that this behavior hurts Romano is long lasting misunderstanding in the fandom: he really doesn't care.
What annoys him it's that he's often referred to as "Italy's older brother" but not because he's Italy as well, but because that takes away his individuality: he's peeved by the fact he's only considered in relation to his brother, he's Romano besides being Feliciano's older brother ahah.
If his identity as Italy truly mattered to him he would have some kind of reaction out of being called Italy, especially by someone he has a bad relationship with like Germany, but he was left completely indifferent by that. I've often seen fanfictions where he's moved to tears by such action by it actually seems like he doesn't mind. He just wants people to understand he has a persona outside being Feli's big brother ahah.
There's actually a reason why Feli is "Italy" and it has been actually brought up recently in the fandom. Let's go back to history ahah.
A germanic general named Odoacer overthrew the last Roman Emperor, whose name for some reason I always found funnee, Romulus Augustulus.
Now the Eastern Roman Empire was having none of that and decided to invite Theodoric the Great of the Ostrogoths to rule over Italy under their approval(btw if you'll ever visit Ravenna do check out Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and Theodoric's Mausoleum). Ostrogothic rule was short lived (lasted pretty much Theodoric's reign) but greatly improved the economy and the arts. . . Too good to be true of course, because Justinian I(Eastern Roman emperor)decided he wanted to revive the glory ™ of the empire and this brings us to Gothic Wars.
Italy, especially the North, was left devastated by them, as they brought death(duh),poverty and were accompanied by a good dose of famine and plague. Byzantine rule wouldn't last long as a Germanic tribe***, the Lombards, took advantage of their weakness and took over italy and gave birth to a reign, which had Pavia as capital.
Said reign was called Langobardia, in particular North and Central Italy were named Langobardia Maior(The great Langobardia), which is the name under which North italy would be known as for a good part of the middle age and that gives the name to the modern region Milan and Pavia are located, Lombardia/Lombardy.
For example Boccaccio in his Decameron(in particular in the first novella) uses Lombards when referring to Italian merchants because that's the name they were given even if most of them came from Piedmont and Tuscany.
Lombard language and culture slowly was assimilated into the previous one and that can be seen in names, words and laws created in that period. This came to an end in 774 when Charles the Great, king of the Franks(and future Holy Roman Emperor), conquered Pavia and annexed the Lombard kingdom... Under the name of Kingdom of Italy!
So in other words the reason why our boy is the one who's called Italy the most is because he's simply been "Italy" for longer or more specifically for more than once(as I explain in the notes:)!!). Mano on the other hand would have most likely known as Kingdom of Sicily, Kingdom of Naples or Kingdom of the two Sicilies :). And I'm very much sure he would have been proud of such identity.
But what about central Italy??? You see the Papal States forged a document the Donation of Constantine, according to which Emperor Constantine assured Pope Silvester I(in 321) and his successors the exclusive domain over the city of Rome(btw Rome isn't part of southern Italy!!the fact South Italy is called Romano is really weird and so is North Italy as Veneziano ngl). This gave the Church access to "temporal power",id est material power and with it came territorial power. And so little by little (with the exception of Tuscany that flourished on it's own) it ate up the whole of Central Italy, which would develop a linguistic group, a culture and history of its own.
And that's pretty much what you need to know to understand Hetalia's confusing lore ahah. It's not everything I could go on explaining the era of the Commons and the Renaissance and go all through medieval and modern history to make you fully grasp it but I think it's enough for today:D let me know if you want me to talk about the subjects I mentioned in detail and if you want me to go on. Read the notes :)!!!
*I've often seen Feli wearing tarantella clothes, because it's probably assumed as the italian™ traditional dance and the music is misused in videos about Italy(all of Italy!!)when it's really characteristic of the South:)! Would be nice to see more fan arts of Mano in those garments lol really nice
**Napoleon would found in the 18th century the Cisalpine Republic in North Italy, a sister republic of France, that would later become known as the Italian Republic and then the (napoleonic!!!)Kingdom of Italy:) not to be confused with the Kingdom of Italy that would be born on the 17th of March 1861,ring a bell ahah???Read Hetalia's Risorgimento strips if you want to know about that:)))Milan djdbdb was once again the capital of all these.
***considering Romano is stated to have Arabic blood which is definitely brought by the moorish occupation, I'd assume Feli's Germanic one has to do with daddy Lombards. The longobards ruled over the South as well so ehhh, but hey it's Hima we're talking about. Genetics work in a weird way in hetalia, they're like acquired??? Hima explains that Canada, America and Seychelles don't have England's bushy eyebrows because of France's influence. Wtf. Oh btw if you might be interested in the Lombards' origin in Historia Langobardorum Paulus Diaconus informs us they came from Scania(a region in Sweden) and the settled in "Scoringa".

I just saw ur crusades primer and wanted to say thank you because it was so helpful and easy to understand. Also do you have any advice for someone wanting to write their own primer? because I'm thinking about writing my own on renaissance era Italy (and its art and the restoration of it) as I've already seen a few people with wildly inaccurate info. (Also its so nice to see someone else from New Zealand on here!!)
Kia ora, fellow Kiwi! My only real advice for writing primers is 1) think about what information you really want people to take away and structure it around that - what are the misconceptions that are driving you the most batty? what are the things people obviously don’t know they don’t know? and 2) check your recollections with sources. The amount of time you spend on this is up to you but at least some due diligence is always worth it.
And maybe 3), write it out and then go back and get rid of the bits that are extraneous to 1). You’re better off doing multiple posts than trying to get absolutely everything someone could ever want to know into one.

I love your history sets, you always choose such vibrant gifs for them and I've learned so much from the info you add to every one of them. How do you actually go about them? How do you choose which moments/settings/figures in particular you want to showcase in them - like for example your renaissance gif set - and how do you gather the material for them? Do you use just fictional shows/movies or documentaries too?
Thank you so much for your kind words  (ノ◕ヮ◕) I’m really glad you like my gifsets and the info I add to them - sometimes I worry it’s too much but I’m glad it’s not! I too learn from the gifsets made by my fellow history lovers
As to how I go about them... well, usually it’s to shed light on historical figures I like and, for some of my picks, it’s also figures that aren’t necessarily very popular on tumblr... For examples, figures that are less popular in Tudor history, or figures that are not from British history. There are already plenty of very well-made gifsets about Tudor history/British history so I might as well divert from it when I have the opportunity ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. French history on tumblr is often reduced to Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette (also Reign, but uh... the historical inaccuracy is just a big no from me) so I want to show more of it.
How do you choose which moments/settings/figures in particular you want to showcase in them
For the moments: sometimes I have a very clear idea of the scene I want to use (when it’s from period dramas I know well) so it’s easy to get, and when I don’t know, I just fast-forward until I find a scene I like and think will be easy to colour (which eeh... it does not always turn out to be easy... you would think that after all these years spent giffing, I would now know from the beginning what is easy to colour and what isn’t, but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
For the settings: it’s usually thematic, I know what I want to do so I try to find footage for it. For example, my last gifset of “women who didn’t die a peaceful death”, at first I wanted to do one figure per historical era (ancient, medieval, renaissance, modern, contemporary) but the figures I picked didn’t quite fit so it changed a little (for the men’s version, I have one per era roughly, but I do need to find a good dl of Tut 2015... if someone has a link...).
For my Renaissance gifset, I wanted to showcase a little bit of everything - military stuff, religious stuff, all the cultural stuff, and the royalty/court stuff - so I went through the various period dramas I have that are set during the Renaissance and picked from there. In the end, I used footage from The Tudors, Borgia and Carlos Rey Emperador. I know The Tudors rather well by now lol so I know what I wanted from it, I was in the middle of watching Borgia so I had ideas about what to get from it, and I finalized with Carlos Rey Emperador.
For the figures: I guess there is some kind of alternance between the very famous ones (like Cleopatra) and the much less known ones (like Mary Tudor, Dowager Queen of France or Anne of Brittany), and also not to have a gifset that would be for example 80% English history and 20% other (unless the theme calls for it!). My gifsets are rarely about a single country so I try to be a bit broad in my choices. It does help that have period dramas that cover various countries and eras. Also, I try to pick figures that have been represented in period dramas, it makes it easier to find footage that is relatively accurate.
like for example your renaissance gif set
(I accidentally already talked about it earlier so I’ll talk about my influent ladies of the Renaissance gifset here instead)
Here, I wanted to cover a rather large period, from 1450 to 1550 roughly. I stopped a bit before, as you can see in the years of death, due to the figures I had picked... Here, I had wanted to show women from various European countries; Italy of course, but also Spain (as you don’t see much stuff related to Spanish history on tumblr and yet there were some powerful women during that era), and also France and England.
As for the fancasts I chose... I didn’t want to have only young actresses in the gifset, because some of the women I picked actually died old and I think it’s important to have older women (in their 40′s and above) showcased. Some of the influential women of Renaissance came in power young, but other came in later, and remained powerful until their deaths. Hence why and how I chose the figures and the footage I used. For Margaret Beaufort for example, I could have used stuff from The White Queen, but I thought it better to use footage from The White Princess for the age of the actress. Same for Louise of Savoy, she was at the zenith of her power during the reign of her son Francis I, so I wasn’t going to use a young actress for her (and she was in Carlos Rey Emperador, so it was easy to find footage).
and how do you gather the material for them?
Period dramas 98% of the time. I try to find period dramas where the historical figure is represented, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen (Mary Tudor Dowager Queen of France, for example) so I have to use a fancast from a period drama set at the same time and relatively in the same geographical zone (for outfits that relatively historically accurate). I kind of worked so far, I have to say. (I do need to find something about Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden though...)
Wikipedia is helpful with that because there is usually a list of adaptations at the end of the page dedicated to a historical figure, so you can pick and choose from there! But when the adaptations are lacking, or when you can’t find a good dl somewhere, it can become difficult to gather the material... hence the laps of time between two gifsets sometimes (that, and the lack of time).
Also, if it’s a gifset that is supposed to be rather general (like the aforementioned renaissance ladies gifset), I try to use multiple sources of footage to get some variety, even though it can end up with me tearing my hair apart trying to colour the gifs lol. Yeah, for that gifset, I had used The White Princess, Isabel TVE, Borgia, Carlos Rey Emperador, the documentary Six Wives with Lucy Worsley and Wolf Half...  but not The Tudors, surprisingly enough. Some variety is always nice!
Do you use just fictional shows/movies or documentaries too?
Mostly period dramas but I did use documentaries a couple of times.
For example, for the two gifsets I made about the life of Mary I of England (I & II), I used footage from The Tudors (Sarah Bolger was awesome as a young Mary - during the reign of her father) and from the first episode (called “Battle for the throne”) of a documentary about Elizabeth I from 2017 that had Mary as Queen of England. If you’re gonna cover the complete life of a historical figure and said historical figure didn’t die young, it’s best to use multiple sources (unless you have different actors in the same source, like in my gifset using footage from the Alexander movie of 2004).
Documentaries can be a little tricky if you don’t have scenes of actors acting and it’s mostly the historians talking, but if you have a little footage and the footage is decent, you can make a whole gifset out of it (like I did for Anne of Cleves - all taken from the Six Wives with Lucy Worsley documentary).
I try to use different sources not to always use the same footage, but I also have my favorites, so sometimes I’ll always use the same footage for a specific historical figure because I just love it (and I spend a good time rewatching the show/movie while getting the caps lol).
Overall, it’s rather time-consuming to make these history gifsets, between deciding on what to make, then finding the footage, getting the caps, making the gifs (I usually have to get new footage for at least one or two gifs when I’m there), and then writing the little texts with Wikipedia and my history books at hand... But I’m very glad you’re enjoying the final result! It’s always nice to know your hard work is appreciated (ノ◕ヮ◕)
I hope I answered your questions in any case, and thank you very much for showing interest in the behind-the-scenes process!

Thank you for this amazing character relationship overview, as always. I want to express my opinions in all of this, @ellawritesficssometimes , putting aside the show and the characters for a while.
It's interesting for me to see all of these interactions between the two and being able to compare them as an Italian (and living in the north-central part of Italy) with my experiences with people from the south and north and what I know about the history of my country.
I guess for now there are two main things that caught my interest, more than the many others I mean, it would be a lot to say here.
First things first. Hima never mentions how Spain's occupation and being a Spanish colony influenced Romano's economy. From what I've learned, it mostly was because of Spanish barons and feudal lords that south Italy (the Kingdom of Naples) stayed behind with a feudal-system-based economy, compared to north Italian states which were first in trading in Europe for a long time and even when Colonialism hit they didn't really go that down with their economy. I'm still studying so I don't know that much and I'm still doing the early 1700s in my History class but from what I know, it was during the Renaissance that south Italy really stayed that far behind its northern half in terms of development for the first time. So much they barely were developing anymore. And what's worst, Hima never acknowledged how bad the Spanish rule was reported to be in Italy in general. I love Spanish people and Spain as a country with all my heart and those times are sooo long gone, but even Hima acknowledges Spain (as a character) 's dark side and still it seems that it was always Romano's fault with everything that happened to him when he was under Spain's rule.
Goes without saying that the Papal State did its job at literally cutting Italy in two halves for centuries. (Oh and the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, France and other colonisers have their own faults being, well, colonisers. History is never black and never white and no-one is to be blamed anyway, I'm just putting on the table all the factors I can find)
The second thing that interests me a lot while stinging a little too, is the actual north/south relationship thing in real life and modern day era compared to Hetalia. I'll be honest here, it has been terrible even within the last decades, there had been a lot of "racism" going on just years ago, stereotypes about southern Italians as being the most terrible people in the world, and hey some things weren't totally off, it's just different cultures clashing. I'll give Hima props for showing the cultural difference, or let's say, stating that they differ, I don't care that much about how he does it until it's unbearable, which it isn't. Oh but I never liked how Romano's character is almost always shown to be bad mannered or something. But that's for another time. The thing is, northern Italians had been giving southern Italians negative stereotypes for decades (probably centuries or something but I've been alive for way less, so I'll tell ya my parents' experience first, then mine) and southern Italians had been doing quite the same as them and I can't blame anyone. But putting cultural differences aside I just really need to say that we're doing so much better. Italy has never been this culturally "united" I bet (aside from the Roman empire??), stereotypes are slowly becoming less and less vile, and the people get along better. It's probably because of the number of southern Italians looking for jobs in the North but hey, who cares. I like it this way. As I said I kinda live in a weird grey area, a lot closer to the north but not that far from the south either, I live just near Florence and if you look it up you'll see what I mean, but still. I have plenty of friends that have southern parents or have one side of the family from the north and one from the south. I live for this shit. I just love it. And I have faith in this generation, I believe we can really be the first generation of Italians to really bring the two halves together once and forever.
So yeah if you've read this far, thank you, I just wanted to tell you how it works here today, in real life. I think it's an interesting comparison. And I hope Hima will not only continue making strips but also will bring out the real bond we are creating. Of course there's a lot to work on still, within the more far off places on both sides the people are still closed on themselves, but it's easy to tell that this is the start of something great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What this post aims to do is chart out Italy and Romano’s rather…rocky relationship. It’s not something that has warranted a lot of discussion in the community, so I thought it would be an interesting topic to touch on.
Early Childhood + Ingrained Inferiority:
It’s well-known that Rome devoted more time raising Veneziano than he did with Romano. As such, Romano has a long and well-developed hostility towards Veneziano, all of which stems from his own feelings of inferiority and insecurities.
Sources: Hetarchive, Chibitalia & Volume 6.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What really cemented this inferiority complex is that after Romano is conquered by Spain, Spain constantly compares Romano to Veneziano and even asks Austria to trade brothers with him. Romano feels even poorly about himself as a result.
