I MEAN

Merlin technically DID confess that he has magic in the third episode... Lmao, but nobody believed him thanks to that amazing himbo that is Arthur Pendragon.

Also yeah, I find it mighty weird that Arthur is apparently in love with Gwen for the character traits she shares with Merlin. Like:

"Oh shit, she stood her ground" and "Oh fuck, she called me out on my bullshit" and "Oh damn, she's a servant but sees me as an equal" and "Oh crap, she's loyal to Camelot" LIKE

Look me in the eyes and tell me that that's not also a great way to describe Merlin. Except for the pronouns.

Also, again, this is probably the writer's fault, as I doubt they would intentionally let this happen to Gwen's character BUT.

As you said, she would have probably become a good friend of Arthur after Merlin did the heavy lifting on his character and showed the world that he's not an asshole: he's a genuinely good person with a heart of gold, but also serious issues (poor baby. YOU try to grow up with Uther and come out normal). But then, she actually falls for him... And like, weird stretch, but ok. The problem I see now is: She didn't fall in love despite his worse characteristics (*cough cough* that's Merlin *cough cough*), just after they were already put aside by someone else.

Aren't cool love stories based on characters falling for each other despite all the problems around and inside of them? This love arc is boring now because Arthur is actually decent at this point in time (they tried to make him a stuck up prick in that episode but that's ✨HORRIBLE CHARACTERIZATION✨so I won't consider it canon) and Gwen, let's face it, never was given an actual character flaw.

And can we talk about this? Because I feel as if no one is talking about it in fear of an angry mob coming for them. Which is likely to happen to be fair, BUT.

Gwen has no flaws. No, being shy and someone who rambles a lot isn't a character flaw, that's called being endearing to the viewer. Good job, you succeeded so thoroughly that no one criticises her. Tell me one time she made a GENUINE, mistake. Not a mistake driven by "love" or "doing what you think is best, and it is the best, but for some reason out of your control it went wrong".

I can't think of anything. GENUINELY NOTHING. That's not a well written character, I'm sorry. The only time she could have made a mistake is when she married Arthur told Lancelot to keep Arthur safe when she very well knew that that would result in Lancelot giving up his life. She's REALLY lucky that's another feat of bad writing or I wouldn't make positive memes about her. Lancelot deserved better, they all did.

Given the fact that she has no flaws she also has no arc.

"WHAT!?!??! BUT SHE BECAME QUEEN FROM BEING A SERVANT!!!!"

That, my friends, is NOT a character arc. That's what they want you to believe because they didn't give her one. Her position in society has nothing to do with character.

She became more confident and doesn't stutter anymore. I mean good for her, in another show, with another position, that would make a good character arc. But guess what. She is one of the main characters in BBC Merlin. A show where the other 3 main characters had HUGE arcs.

Morgana went from a good girl to a genocidal maniac. Merlin went from a country boy who reluctantly helps Arthur out to what could be considered a God whose only care in the world is to keep Arthur safe and happy. And Arthur went from an arrogant and selfish prince to the Greatest king in the whole of Albion, whose ideas of justice and equality would shape the world for centuries to come...

Her character arc seems a bit weak now does it?

Don't @ me you know I'm right, you're just sad I am. Unless you have an actual criticism which I need because I HATE that there's no more depth to her.

Wow, this went from "lol Merlin did confess tbf TROLOLOLOL" to a character analysis nobody asked for.

But I needed to say this. I love Gwen (not the writers' Gwen... The Gwen in my mind), but I think she is venerated in the fandom so much that no one feels safe enough to call out that she's written horribly, and is, overall, a boring character. (Might I also remind you that she isn't willing to fight for Arthur. When he asks her what he should do about Elena, she's like "idk, but whatever you do I'll be here to see you do it". Ok thanks for the encouragement love, but aren't we supposed to like... Be in love? And yeah, it's Merlin who tells Arthur that People Should Marry For Love© so there)
