Happy holidays! ✨ Can I get 4, 8, and 16 for the end of the year asks. :)
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
yes definitely! Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Diana Wynne Jones (I hadn't read her works before), Anne Youngson and Harini Nagendra. I love all of them and I want to explore more of what they've written.
8. Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones?
I had no reading goals, but I did want to try and not dnf a book this year. It didn't work, I've dnf-ed two books for booklub ;-;
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
Ooh The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I would say it's overhyped in the wrong way, going exactly the opposite direction of what it's about. It is usually listed as an essential to get into the "dark academia aesthetic" while the book essentially criticizes said aesthetic and aesthetics in general. It was a fun read, though @themelodyofspring would disagree ;)

they should invent a new type of "staying in bed for 2-3 hours after you wake up repeatedly opening and closing apps on your phone" where it makes you feel awesome and energized and emotionally fulfilled

I just realized, the art market is literally NFT but with actual art and not random pictures

Mongolian history class, 2022, start of the semester. We're having a discussion on animal slaughter, featuring the one Mongolian student in our school.
The student explains that he's slaughtered animals himself, and there are two ways of doing it that avoid the spilling of blood. For a small animal like a chicken, you reach up into the chest of the animal and sever the arteries. For a larger animal like a camel, there's a spot on the forehead that, when hit hard enough, causes the animal to die instantly.
While this discussion is going on, a couple of the students are sharing something back and forth on their phone
The professor calls this out, asking if what they're sharing is more interesting than Mongolian animal slaughter
The room is dead silent for a few seconds. The two students look at each other awkwardly.
Eventually, one of the students pipes up:
"Well, the queen of England just died."
And without missing a beat, another student:
"Did they hit her on the head like a camel?"

An embroidery piece of the luggage from the Discworld series, ivory teeth, lolling red tongue and almost two dozen legs included. I somehow also managed to make it seem like it's grinning. Took me two months with two-thread embroidery. 😂
