Another Phaidei Fic I Want to Read

It's the political arranged marriage AU but make it (ooooo) complicated~

Crown Prince Mydeimos of Castrum Kremnos was born under a dark star, with a prophecy of abject despair uttered at the moment of his birth: Mydeimos will be the last king of Kremnos. The city-state will fall, her people will be lost, and the glory of Strife entirely will fade into nameless oblivion. Year after year, the prophets repeat the same warnings: Mydeimos is cursed, and he will bring the downfall of their kingdom and all its inhabitants.

But no one in Kremnos knew just how cursed their prince was until the day the regent's war council convinced their king to do the unthinkable: If Mydeimos was sacrificed, perhaps their prophecy of destruction could be averted and Kremnos saved...

Only Mydei couldn't even die like he was supposed to. No matter how many times he was mortally wounded, the boy just kept standing up--not even Thanatos would take him. That glorious death in battle that all Kremnoan warriors were expected to achieve--even this most central aspect of Mydei's own culture rejected him.

This life of betrayal and total loneliness, with the promise of eventually destroying everything he knew and cared for, seemed inescapable--until one day, when Mydeimos had already passed the age of majority (and would have long since been allowed to challenge his father for the crown if it weren't for the despair prophesied to be his reign), a new vision was shared among all of their people's seers: There was a way to avert their kingdom's impending destruction and save their people. "Only the son of Aedes Elysiae can deliver Castrum Kremnos from the dark tide and restore the true king to her throne."

Aedes Elysiae is a tiny city-state with nowhere near enough military might to defend against a full onslaught from the Kremnoans. But the risk that the Elysian prince could be harmed--and all of Kremnos' future lost in the process--is too high to engage in a traditional war of conquest. Although it runs contrary to the Kremnoans' very natures, if it means securing their kingdom's future and hiding the truth of their foreseen fate forever, they will engage in any manner of subterfuge and political maneuvering necessary.

Namely, by using the threat of war to force Aedes Elysiae to surrender their crown prince to a permanent and binding political alliance. If the Elysians want to avoid obliteration by the military might of the Kremnoans, they will tie the destiny of their crown prince to the Strifewalkers' through blood and oath--a marriage to Kremnos' own Prince Mydeimos. In this way, perhaps the curse can finally be outweighed by the glory of a savior.

Enter Phainon: the pride and joy of Aedes Elysiae, the golden sun to his people, loved by everyone who knows him. Although his heart has always been soft and romantic, rebelling fiercely at the idea of marrying someone he's never met and doesn't love, there is nothing Phainon won't do to protect his people and his kingdom--even if it means sacrificing himself.

So Phainon agrees to leave his family and homeland behind, and makes the miserable journey to Castrum Kremnos to meet his destiny... as well as his new husband.

Too bad Mydei wants absolutely nothing to do with him.

Disgusted by his father's willingness to forsake Kremnos' sacred principles of pride and integrity by using underhanded tactics and falsehoods to force Aedes Elysiae's prince into compliance, Mydei refuses to even acknowledge his marriage to Phainon, let alone look in his fellow prince's direction.

Which wouldn't be a problem, honestly, if it weren't for the fact that poor Phainon is smitten within days.

When the Kremnoans were strong-arming Aedes Elysiae's king into giving up his beloved son, why had no one thought to just tell Phainon that Prince Mydeimos was so... so... upright and honest and brave and powerful and gorgeous and straightforward and humorous and quick-witted and honorable and also gorgeous? (Phainon thinks perhaps this last point should be repeated a few more times for good measure.) Truly, Phainon might have gone willingly if anyone had just thought to show him a portrait of his husband-to-be in advance!

While Phainon struggles to catch his own husband's attention and soften Mydei's seemingly unbreakable stone heart, Mydei struggles with his father's demands to keep his curse hidden, to not reveal the omen of destruction lurking behind this sham of a marriage. Though having to lie shreds every last tatter of pride Mydei has, if this prince of Aedes Elysiae discovers the truth, that he's been brought here solely to counteract Mydei's prophesied inability to reign, Kremnos' enemies will know it within the hour. A single weakness will be all the world needs to turn on the Kremnoans, to bring Mydei's terrible destiny to pass.

And... And if Phainon learns the truth about Mydeimos, about his curse, about how he is an abomination that not even death will accept, about the misery he is destined to bring, about the failures that are sure to come, about how he is hated by his country, his people, his own family--then Mydei will lose the first person who has ever smiled freely at him, ever wanted to walk beside him, ever spoke kind words in his direction...

There is no way Phainon would ever look at him the same again.

There is no way Phainon would stay.

And that would be cruelest fate of all.

(What Mydei and Castrum Kremnos don't know is that Phainon has a secret of his own: He's not royalty by blood in the slightest. He was a penniless orphan who just got lucky enough to be taken in by the castle and end up, through twists in his own destiny, to be raised by the childless rulers of Elysiae from nothing but the kindness of their hearts.

There is no son of Aedes Elysiae to save Castrum Kremnos from its fate--and the dark tide comes for all.

But visions bestowed by the gods must not be doubted. Perhaps the combined efforts of two lonely people--the one who forsook his own land for love and the one who could only be loved by someone from another land--will see the sun of Aedes Elysiae delivered to Kremnos once more...

And put a true and honest king upon her throne at last.)

oK SO i ... forgot how i was gonna word this but i was thinking thoughts about wreck-it ralph and i made a realisation or two ... one i think is already pretty noticeable n i'm sure someone's pointed it out already and the other i think i could absolutely be imagining it but i have been thinking about this for days and my mind will not leave me alone about it so i have to share it anyway regardless of if i'm right or not or i think i will actually go crazy

(taffyta , swizzle malarkey and candlehead were kept for comparison but i cut the others bc i felt it was a little too much but they all have about the same cadence anyway)

so first thing ... i noticed how more enthusiastically vanellope's name is called out compared to the other racers when her name is put up on the board ... kinda like how one would announce a big event or someone of importance , almost as if it were announcing 'and now please give a royal welcome to our princess , vanellopppeee von schweetz !'

i think that part is pretty easy to notice , but now the part where i think i might actually just be hearing things and staring too hard at the colour blue that i swear i'm seeing red but i swear i swear there's something different about the way king candy's name is said ... like not just the bubbliness of the way 'kInG cAnDy !' is said which i already think is slightly odd , because everyone else is announced pretty normally , even vanellope aside from the previously mentioned extra enthusiasm , but i also swear ... the voice it just sounds ... different ? almost like it were someone else ... ? it couuuld just be the way the announcer is pronouncing it that makes it sound off but to me it almost sounds like another voice doing a really good impersonation almost ... ? regardless i have to question that if king candy wasn't supposed to be in sugar rush originally , how come he has a voice line saying his name ... ? sooooo , if the voice really is someone else's ... could turbo have done an impression ? i don't think it's tooo far off to assume bc also where tf did the kc portrait come from did he draw it himself too ? ofc you couuuld say maybe kc was a scrapped character who still had enough coding left over for the voice and portrait as well as the model but i don't think that's quite as fun

again i think i'm prooobably just hearing things and it's probably nothing , but i really can't help but feel there's something off about that voice line and it just will not leave me alone ... and i thought it'd be fun to point out anyway even if i'm wrong after all wEeEeEeE

wanted to try my hand at a fake screenshot thing with a scene from one of the bttf fics of all time, Time Is a Flat Circle by @fourth-dimensional-thinker! i set in to draw only the "little canary" line but. as you can tell. my hand slipped and fell down a 6 story building

one of my favorite post-canon komahina tropes has got to be uncannily observant komaeda. he knows which detergent scent hinata prefers to snag from future foundation's monthly supply drops. he knows that hinata prefers pens to pencils, and pens that click open to pens with caps that detach. he knows what time hinata tends to show up for meals, and how hinata takes his coffee (one sugar and a splash of low-fat milk. not black, but not too sweet, either).

(my drabble got out of hand, watch that happen below the cut lol.)

it's not that hinata himself isn't observant... well. alright. he isn't always observant. but he can lock in when he knows he needs to! he wouldn't have survived a killing game otherwise, and he's got some extra help now (when he decides to tap into it).

he just doesn't understand how komaeda keeps it up around the clock. he assumes it must be because his brain never really turns off. and, well. he's half right. komaeda has a hard time letting his guard down. actually, "hard" might win understatement of the century.

but it's more than that. of course, knowing the full truth would demand that hinata acknowledge the way komaeda's eyes trace his movements over breakfast, like he's mapping out a crime scene, or plotting the perfect kill. like hinata's some sort of prey. like he's special.

strip down hope's peak's dubiously ethical upgrades, and hinata's a reserve course student. he knows it. he knows that komaeda knows it, too. the attention he pays him doesn't add up, so he writes it off. he's imagining things.

so, when komaeda walks over to hinata's table to bring him coffee exactly how he likes it, it takes him off guard. he chalks it up to an exhaustingly keen eye, and maybe a bit of luck. komaeda's an anomaly, hinata has always known that. he rolls his eyes as the other slinks into the chair across from his own, props his elbows up on the table.

(he doesn't question why komaeda's bringing him coffee in the first place. komaeda knows better than anyone: hinata's whole "observant" thing... it comes and goes.)

If you want my two cents, which you probably don't to be honest -- steven moffat HAS made some writing choices that I would consider somewhat sexist or racist or whatever else, in the sense that they may play into stereotypes or whatever, but like....so have so so many writers, many of whom get wayyyyy less shit than him. And he IS a good writer!! His seasons of doctor who are bomb! They have such a mystical feeling to them that most of the other seasons didn't have. He's a damn good writer and he's made lots of good writing choices. He's just had a few shitty ones, like all writers, and they've gotten majorly blown out of proportion. We can accept he isn't perfect (which you never claimed he was! but people seem to think that's what you're saying) and still appreciate his talents. Take the good with the bad, right? He's a person who has inevitably fucked up, like everyone else. We can call him out on that and then MOVE ON (which is the key part). Still definitely a fan of his work.

Exactly, yeah. I generally don't think arguing over whether a writer has ever made anything problematic is a particularly useful way to come at this sort of conversation (as it's inevitably true of any artist). Rather, I think it's worth pointing out when a writer's reputation is extremely disproportional to the actual content in question or when things are actively being misattributed in criticism of them

okay, let's talk the necklace scene.

so.. we can all agree shauna sees it as a death omen, right ?? ( drawing from jackie, giving it to nat before the hunt, pit girl. ) so when she sees callie wearing it, she freaks out. understandably so.

but what i find interesting, is what callie's wearing.

a striped shirt. which, is extremely similar to the jumper jackie wears, and the shirt shauna's son was wearing in her hallucination. so, it's not that outlandish to assume that in her subconscious, shauna also associates that sort of clothing with death / something she can't have. which explains her reaction — how she parents callie in this scene is really interesting to me. telling her "you don't understand." instead of getting angry at her, is something i think is important here.

but let's talk from lottie's side of it all.

"it doesn't mean what you think it means." is not coming from a jackieshauna perspective guys. that's coming from the nature of how it was used in the wilderness.

but i think the shirt callie's wearing ?? definitely a jackieshauna thing. and i also think, that lottie is the reason behind callie wearing that specific shirt. that, or callie wore it, and lottie gave her the necklace, because that's what solidified in her mind that it was the right thing to do.

"it feels right." is such a crazy line. we've had callie and jackie parallels for two seasons now, and i'm ignoring all the she's the father shit, but. she has a boyfriend she doesn't like. she's a 'stereotypical' teen girl. she goes out late, she has a curfew. ( thinking pilot parallels specifically. )

so, yeah. i completely understand how lottie's coming at the whole situation, especially with the grooming that's been going on. and i need everyone to understand that this was premeditated. lottie spends the entire day with callie ( assumably. ) so she had to have brought the necklace with her, when she showed up at shauna's door.

and with the whole "she's so powerful." thing last season ?? yeah, something is going to happen with lottie and callie, and i'm really excited for it. i don't like the dynamic, but that's the point. you're not supposed to like it. it's uncomfortable, it's weird, it's pseudosexual.

the leading reason lottie went to shauna, is because of callie.

but what confuses me, is how lottie expects a different reaction from shauna. shauna !! shauna who beat her bloody, and almost killed her, because she was grieving. shauna who she was still scared of 25 years later. shauna, who she knows sees the necklace differently than she does.

but maybe— that's what she wants. "it's happening again." and we're seeing shauna growing more powerful within the group in the teen timeline. if shauna does end up becoming the antler queen, then that makes perfect sense. she wants shauna angry. because shauna being angry, means shauna will lead.

it means they can revert back to their roles within the wilderness.

and if lottie views callie as a second wilderness baby type character, then..

"we call upon the child to deliver us."

either way, i loved this scene, and the implications of it. went very off subject, but who even caresssss.

somewhat overlooked point but it's always been interesting to me that vau's father's problem with him was the dissapointment/dishonor type just because you probably wouldn't guess. Vau generally reads blank but the fact that he's someone who thinks he's removed the problem by viscerally cutting out all the visible manifestations of it is. yeah great job. Day to day he operates with this crystal clear refusal to subject himself to others' opinions [heavily implied 'like before' here] but we see him instill a version of the same fear honed traits in his cadets and watch it bubble up in relation to jango and even more curiously himself. He's such a pile of completely at war with eachother hand picked pieces held together with tack welds. You're lying to yourself, walon

Crazy how despite Mikan's love for gory movies and blood, she doesn't do an over the top murder. She doesn't even do a medical themed murder despite it being the main focus of the chapter. (Only one of her victims was a patient and she just strangled her)

Crazy how, when she wants to commit a murder for Junko, she does neck trauma.

General Veronica: Leader of the local branch of the Society of Leopold, respected and admired by her Hunters, who call her "Saint Veronica" and would follow her anywhere.

Dietrich Reiker: An informant. Definitely someone the PCs can trust. Lasombra.

Dominic Marquise: Sergeant of the "Anarch Militia" of Davenport, basically a police force for Cainite matters. Toreador.
