"Army of Ghosts" thoughts

i really need to stop doubting russell. he put his whole pussy into some of these episodes

so this is one of those stories i've never rewatched, ever. the ending to "doomsday" devastated me so severely in high school (11-ish years ago) that i shied away from ever returning to this story. so far, it bangs

it begins w narration from rose about nothing ever having happened to her in her entire life, you can actually hear billie smile when she says "and then i met a man called the doctor" and like. i really can't stress enough. rose is the insane one in their relationship. rose carries the brunt of the derangement. house/wilson, hannibal/will, i am a huge sucker for pairings where the "normal" half is the sickest person alive and that is the most interesting interpretation of rose, to me. she is so bored of normal life that she would literally rather die than return to it, and she LOVES it, she craves it, the danger is the appeal not the doctor. she obviously has feelings for him (mutual) but it doesn't matter if he's ancient or ugly or whatever, she needs this life. rose is insane. bless

i do love her kindness tho. her being very delicate and gentle w jackie over the ghosts thing, reminding her that her dad is dead, saying she wishes she could smell the same cigarette smoke but she doesn't

and the doctor's reaction to the ghosts. "don't you think it's beautiful?" "i think it's horrific" ouch. he's right but ouch. i do think jackie has a point, though not the one she thinks she's making. the fact that people have the capacity to love so deeply, so intently, that they see blurry figurines appear out of thin air and assign qualities and personalities and scents to them, they see a footprint and vividly reminisce about the boot, i do think that's beautiful. the human capacity for love even in the strangest circumstances is, to me (a historian by schooling, vet med by profession) one of the most endearing, admirable traits of humanity

rose blowing off jackie's concern for her new lifestyle by being like "i worked in a SHOP" [ie my previous life had no meaning or value] and jackie defensively saying "i've worked in shops" yes girl. retail workers have value and are in fact braver than any us marine (source: worked in macy's on black friday). rose has this nice dichotomy that feels deeply real, where she is kind of ashamed of her life (living at home, working retail) but also protective of it (defends her mom, always makes a point to talk to "the help")

we also get the resolution to 1000 mentions of torchwood this season. my boyfriend actually didn't know torchwood was a dw spinoff before he started this watch w me, which is kind of funny. torchwood isn't really worth all the buildup, tbh. it's not worth the hype. huge shoutout to burn gorman tho, wildly underrated as an actor. "we must defend our border against the alien" and wanting to harness the power of the hole between worlds in order to "never depend on the middle east again" wow really not subtle here. even ignoring the plans to reinstate the british empire. davies is virulently anti-establishment in this show (and i assume irl) and it's deeply refreshing; i think doctor who can be a little too liberal-centrist for my tastes at times (capaldi zygon two-parter my beloathed grrrrrrrrrrr) so i really respect how often he went whole-hog acab fuck the government. it's one of the biggest reasons i'm excited to have him BACK

All the german tv series I've seen the last few years have been really good (charité [i've only seen the original season not the ww2 one], deutschland 83, barbaren, 1899 [gone too soon], this). My mom and her bf are watching Battlestar Galactica and that's a fun little show

i've seen series 1-4 like six times (started watching as it aired in series 3 i think?), 5-7 once and no plans to rewatch (sorry eleven), dropped the show entirely after the 50th anniversary, then went back to watch 8-10 a couple years later and currently rewatching, the first like.... 2 or 3 episodes of 13s run as they aired which i promptly abandoned and don't plan on finishing.... then the recent specials. i really want to love ncuti so i will tune in but i'm not... optimistic about the writing based on what i've seen. excited to try tho

3. i intend to focus heavily on clara's post-show canon on this blog , in which she has her own tardis she disguises as a diner , and travels through time and space , becoming like the doctor in her own regard----or perhaps like a hybrid. she is not aware that the doctor has regained their memories with her cause she wasn't there when he did , so she's running on that nostalgia juice , going on adventures to keep the doctor close to her heart , which is one beat away from death. her death is something she avoids heavily , whether out of fear or spite is up to the beholder-----she really does plan to get back to gallifrey and face it , someday. maybe.

4. despite this , i'm of course more than happy to write clara at any point during the show and her time with the doctor , as well as creating aus for her! i'm already imagining a dark lonely clara , similar to a doctor with no companion .. im cooking

5. on the novelizations: i haven't read them but have read of them , so i'm going to write clara's arc ii canon as taking place at a point in time where me and willa are no longer traveling with her , but did in the past. ( obviously this will be different if i write with either of those characters lmao. ) bc cmon , you can't really think i'm gonna pass up on clara being considered one of the fates. that's sick as hell.

6. i do prefer to plot , as it makes things easier for me , but its not absolutely required !

Heheh, thanks! That whole 'character' strictly speaking predates my current plans for the Worlds by a good while, but they've both changed a lot by now. He gets dumped with the 'itinerant fantasy adventurer' role a little, which makes him stand out from the otherwise 'grounded' tone of the setting. But he's me, so he get's a pass once I figure out a name for him other than my actual one.

And about the ship!

Drachinifel's stuff is very good, and this video on the class in question goes into a fair bit of detail on what set it apart from previous generations of the 'Standards';

For a tl;dw on the cancellation, though, it seems the Soviets didn't have much to do with it, which makes sense to me at least from what I know about the era. The WNT was not attended by the USSR, which at any rate didn't have much in the way of naval aspirations and wasn't seen as the primary threat for US interests yet.

Instead, the US's main hypothetical naval adversaries seemed to be the UK and Japan, which at the time were both close allies in the naval domain, and of course each could account for the US's two major 'ocean-areas'. The cancellation of the SD's legally hinged on the class as designed exceeding 35,000 tonnes standard displacement, and was accompanied by the scrapping of UK and Japanese battleships over that limit and under construction. Whether the US considered this a diplomatic victory or necessary concession is not something I'm really sure on, but Drach has a video on the treaty which I might rewatch to answer.

It's also noted that the armour scheme of the class was a bit lackluster compared to the state of the era's gunnery. So, maybe the loss wasn't too painful.

Ooooo, you're on a very interesting track there! I'll admit my pacific war history isn't as sharp as the ETO either, and as far as tech goes is a little reductive to 'Japan leads in doctrine in the early war, and is gradually but consistently ground down there and in technology as it progressed'. If you ask me, and you don't have to, considering how long the war in Mortal Sparks lasts, this sort of 'push and pull' feels like something that might come up in the war-side of things.

Either way, wouldn't mind giving whatever it is you've been getting this stuff from 👀

Y'know, this reminds me of how, in Singapore at least, I recall the racist assumptions of the British at least being blamed for their poor performance in the battle for Malaya. Might not be what you were referring to, but came to mind.

I'm most surprised that Guadacanal wasn't brought up, out of all the others (maybe Coral Sea too?). It was a bit of a slog and not exactly an unmitigated victory, but it was a big theatre for a few years.

Really though, he's very much a caricature in that sense, and power fantasy, but that kinda comes with the territory?

So, I'm going to use this as an opportunity to talk about that Battleship one I mentioned in the notes of that post o' yours, but as far as my own stuff goes I recently went down the tangent of trying to find whenever it was people first used the words 'track' or 'tractor' to refer to caterpillar tracks and the vehicle respectively. I know I'm not using tanks as a word or a 'classification', if I can help it, but coming up with something original is tricky, like those sci-fi nerds who avoid using 'frigates' and 'corvettes'.

When I first saw your collage, my mind immediately jumped to the battleship in the bottom right hand corner, which contained this picture:

The screen I was viewing this on was a small one, which is my only excuse, because when I decided to try and check the number on the bow there, the very obvious 62, my brain saw that and thought '52'. Now, I think I recognised the ship itself as one of the Iowa class, and probably a Cold War era one at that, but when I checked the designation 'BB-52' (BB being the US Navy prefix for battleships), I got this:

Now, this is where the actual stupid trouble comes in. I will assume I didn't read the 'cancelled' part here, because I decided to try and find actual photographs of this ship, which, y'know, don't actually exist. What I did managed to find was pictures of the South Dakota-class, but...

NOT THE RIGHT ONE!

You see, the previous ship class to the Iowas was also called South Dakota, and to me they looked pretty similar, so I then assumed that North Carolina was one of those ships, and became even more confuzzled as to why I couldn't find a picture of it.

Then, at some point, I checked the photograph again, and quickly realised that the not-in-that-picture ship I thought was in the picture, wasn't. So... rabbit hole!

Anyhow, though, I did find out about the existence of a class of ship I didn't know anything about, which is handy. I think I've brought up Naval Treaties with you before when we chatted about naval stuff in Mortal Sparks, so I thought it was interesting for it to come up again. They're very interesting phenomenon in international politics and strategy to me, considering some of the behaviour they can push governments to take, and I think any politics or military focused setting should at least consider the place for 'balance of power' treaties like this in them. For what it's worth, I've put in a lot of thought into how they function in the 12 Worlds, a subject I might bring up at some point.

Now that I only have the final season of house left, I'm planning on starting to watch doctor who next. And when I finish criminal minds (I'll be an emotional wreck) I think I'll start the x files (I'm in s11 of cm rn)! So I got everything covered, I'm really really excited for doctor who though I've been hearing so much about it for years and it sounds amazing!!!!

*on a not related note it's been a while since I last watched gossip girl I finished s1 but I haven't started s2, maybe I'll go back I just wanted to let u know I couldn't commit :')

It's ironic that I'm planning on starting all these shows and reading so many books when in a month and a half I'll be starting my senior year (which is a very very big deal to the point where it actually sets the course of your life depending on your grades, so I'm doing my best to enjoy this month of freedom I have before I just stop doing all living activities except for studying, it's gonna be a long year especially that I'm planning on getting the highest grades I could so I can get into a decent college and major in a field of studies of my choosing!!)

1/hello! i'm late (it's already night here) but i really wanted to take some time and send you an ask 🥰 what you mentioned in your last reply about tax being a lot about memorizing lots of tax code and such totally makes sense. I kinda just.. forgot about that part 😂 it doesn't sound like too much fun to memorize these different things but it's probably not why you choose to study accounting and now tax, right? if you feel like talking about it, why did you choose those as your majors? 😁 - 🎄

2/ going in undecided into uni is also not a thing here, so, yes, i've already chosen a major. it's korean studies, actually! (I'm so glad my parents let me do what i wanted instead of forcing something on me that i'm not passionate about...) - 🎄

3/ it's a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of work. the semester being online is an advantage for me though - at least in some parts! I live quite far away from the university and getting a flat or a room in the city is nearly impossible, so i don't have to spend nearly 4 hours of the day commuting from one place to the other. it's sad though that i can't meet the other students and my lecturers/professors... :( - 🎄

4/ and about your favourite shows, dw!! i can relate so well, i'm undecisive af when it comes to my favourites from basically everything 😅 i've watched all of these shows except for still2gether (i dropped 2gether after episode 10 or so though). dbk gave us the cutest side couple tbh! morksun stole the spotlight from petekao, for me at least! you're a huge petekao fan though, right? - 🎄

5/ uwma was such a nice watch. it was a bit heavier and i couldn't watch certain scenes (did not need to be reminded of my panic attacks, thank you very much) but over all i did like it. the acting, especially on fluke's side, was awesome but i wish we could've seen more of earth and kao's incarnation of the main couple... i wish kornin's story would've ended differently :(( - 🎄

hello! good morning! i’m so sorry i didn’t get around to answering this last night! i wanted to make sure all of your messages had come in ^^

i don’t usually talk about my career path online, because...it’s very boring? haha, it’s just not something of interest. but since you asked! i took some accounting classes in high school to see if it was a feasible major, and i found out i was quite good at it. so i figured why not? as for my master’s, there is this thing called the cpa (certified public accountant) exam that almost all accountants take. it honestly just makes you look good on paper, if anything, and companies are more likely to hire you. in order to sit for that, you need to have a certain number of credit hours. with just undergrad, you won’t be able to meet those. so i figured that i’d get a master’s to fill those hours. it was between taxation and auditing, and auditing is just NOT for me (auditors are the people who make sure companies aren’t doing anything illegal on their financial statements, and that’s just the most basic way of putting it haha). so that’s how i ended up here!

it’s so nice that your parents are supportive of the path you want to take! i know for me and many others, that isn’t always the case (if i could’ve, i probably would’ve gone down the route of psychology, but alas). i completely relate to living far from my campus, so while online school is hard, at least we don’t have to make that long commute! especially as it gets colder. i’ve had to walk a good few miles from the train to my building, and let me say, i will not be missing that this year! not being able to make connections with people is really one of the worst parts of online school, but hopefully you’re able to meet at least a few classmates in group projects or something like that (even though group projects are the WORST).

still2gether, to me at least, is the superior between the two shows. i don’t want to say i had low expectations, but i definitely didn’t expect so many things i wanted to happen in the show to ACTUALLY happen. it was just so sweet and lovely and comforting. 

petekao...is everything to me? that sounds so dramatic, omfg. their relationship just makes my heart so full. i could write essays on them. but in fewer words, i adore that they’re an established couple and that they have such grown up, mature conversations. if we set aside the non storyline for a moment (which i could ALSO write essays on, and i’m planning on doing a complete rewrite of his storyline and therefore the trajectory of the show, because i’m crazy), they truly are so supportive of each other through everything. they’re just so GOOD, and i always wish we got to see more of them. but! i know morksun was The Couple of dbk for a lot of people, which i can understand. i should really go back and rewatch it, so i can pay more attention to them, because i really didn’t give them a fair enough shot the first time around.

until we meet again is my very favorite bl, and at this point, i don’t think that’s a secret haha. someone just recently asked me why i loved it so much, so i won’t go into too much detail here. but my tldr is: deanpharm best boys. they have my favorite relationship in the whole wide world. but i am with you! i want to see earth and kao act more together! maybe in a series of their own??

I'm rewatching s2 and ugh a//ura. Ulaz literally blew himself up to save them and she's "well he's purple so..."

I know this was sent twice, but I am not done here. Not by a long shot. Voltron really likes to enforce the whole “History is written by the victors,” so let me expand on that a little more.

Let us hypothetically say there is a Voltron sequel. And let us say, just for shits and giggles, “Space Goddess” Allura gets reborn or revived 10,000 years later with all her memories intact. Again. Because it is boring and predictable writing. Now, who revives her? Probably some Oriande reboot-blessed OP, most likely Altean. 

But here is what I want to see. I want to see the entire universe split in a rebellion, one side seeking the truth of what really happened those many years ago when Allura died, when I died, when all major political figures died. The other side consists of hardcore militant, historical power nations, mostly composed of, you guessed it, Alteans blindly loyal to the Royal Family and like to lick Allura’s boots. 

By this point, the lions are “gone” since Allura died. But now, the universe needs them back, and since her lifeforce is tied to every single lion, it makes sense to revive her to bring them all together. Though, imagine the reason why she is being summoned to do so. Because the Galra are taking over? Or a new foreign threat? 

Nope. There is an all-out war consisting of the Alteans who I saved versus the Alteans who Allura “saved.” On top of that, with the Galra empire in shambles and most likely on the brink of extinction, I want the Blades of Marmora to reveal what really happened when Allura murdered me and the aftermath of those she left to suffer. And I want the truth to shake the entire Altean heritage so hard, not even Alfor can withstand the idea that Allura abused her powers and called it “justice.”

The old paladins are already dead, yes, because humans do not live for long. Maybe Keith lasted a few years longer, but ultimately, they are only known through the history books. But, let us say, these historians interviewed each Paladin while they were alive, questioning them about their entire adventure. Everything from Shiro’s capture to jumping realities while chasing Honerva. 

And I want Shiro to be the whistleblower. His story, everything he talks about, there are conflicting or missing bits of information. Stuff showing that Allura was not this kind and strong-headed leader they thought. Memories of how she was more of a child with a gun than a strategist who truly cared for all. Let the first ugly truth concerning Ulaz’s sacrifice and her hate for the Galra on-sight strike the match to the bomb. 

Then comes her racial comments, her ugly prejudice against Keith, her lack of common sense for herself, the way she brainwashes the public by riding on Alfor’s coattails, relying on what Voltron stands for and not what it truly is (you know, a weapon of mass destruction). Her failure to understand how to work with the Blades of Marmora instead of belittling them for their survival. 

And finally, her falling in love irresponsibly. Her acting out on her aggression then crying into a self-pitying justification party. Her not even bothering to think about sacrificing herself for the man who ended the war and had a legitimate plan to save the universe when she would gladly throw herself at the wolves because “I’m a princess, I don’t need your permission to do this dangerous mission.”

And when Allura learns of the history which was written, which parts were buried and then discovered, I want her to face the reality that the hate she spread? It bled into “her people.” And her people hunted any last surviving Galra because, hey, we can not let them gain power like Zarkon did. They are untrustworthy, all of them, right? Their very existence led to Allura dying, certainly not her own dumb fucking actions and lack of foresight.

But here is where I want the Alteans from the other reality to sneak in. Since Allura was dead and unable to stop them, they would start spreading lies and propaganda about “purging” evil in this universe. Hira and all those Alteans from the other reality succeed in their campaign to “spread peace to all universes.” Now, imagine that none of the Alteans Allura saved are doing anything to stop them. In fact, they join forces to silence the naysayers. 

But why does the rebellion even care about what was true or not? Easy. Because Keith, in his last vlog, admitted all of his regrets. The Black Paladin regrets not saving Lotor, regrets jumping to conclusions based on one Altean’s words, regrets not doing his job properly regarding the Altean colony. As the last leader of Voltron, he feels responsible for the Galra that he tried to lead…and the ones he lied to concerning their “back-stabbing” Emperor.

For the greater good because the truth would show all of the Paladins being the real villains of that past war. There is no way a martyr like Allura could be a closeted-racist villain under the guise of her own righteous “I am The Chosen One” gimmick. How do they know that Allura herself was not the one who allowed Hira into their universe and slaughter Galra right under their noses? 

And when Allura learns all of this, how her actions did not really solve anything, how the universe was still suffering for quintessence, and how her death actually led to people like Hira to creep into power, then maybe she works up her Altean magic to call the lions back to try and “fix” things. But after all these years? 

I want a Galra to be the Black Paladin. In fact, if I was going for my own AU route, I want it to be Celeste, my daughter who was kept secret from the Paladins for safety. And I want her to spit in Allura’s face and say, “You’re no God of mine.”

Anyways, DW should hire me because this bland AU would be right up their alley with their war-humping and “Oh, but she’s traumatized! She has a right to kill people!” tendencies.
