Surface shenanigans!!! Keep in mind there's a LOT. Gonna put most of this under a cut.

Starlo wanting to know Pancake's surface friends better so ge tags along with her when she visits them. And now its his turn to get her interests shoved down his throat.

She found out that her friends have new friends and a couple of them are married, Jerry has a husband, Gwen is dating someone who rarely visits (long distance), and Grunge (her nickname) is still single (cuz aroace).

Stars finds out that they all used to be in a band. He could join if he wanted to. They all used to hang out in this empty parking lot at dusk and have fun while chilling. There's spots where they go exploring in the mountains and caves and even the forest a ways off. He geeks out at the genuine Western ghost town that Pancake and her friends hung out at. There's band practice, damaging lights and doing crimes, exploring abandoned buildings that are said to be haunted.

He learns a lot about her just by being around her friends. Like no wonder she's more calm. This is how she acts. Like wao

I'm still thinking about like. This time for Starcake, cuz I have to relate things to Starcake, Pancake grew up in a small desert town. It's nothing much. Mostly a checkpoint for truckers going from one major city to another. Despite this, there's attempts at making it an actual like, tourist trap or town. There's a rodeo that happens every year in the summer. There's Halloween and Christmas pagents. There's activities and shops. There's an abandoned western town, a genuine ghost town, a few miles off. (Surprise that Pancake knows a lot about cowboys w/o getting into Westerns fjsjdn). There's a 7-11 at the edge of town that people love to hang out at. Rock croppings nearby where teens hang out and parties are sometimes located. There's a couple schools, stores, and yet it's such a tiny town.

Pancake left this town for over a decade. Mostly accidentally, she was planning on camping out on this mountain that people supposedly disappear on. Even though there's like, six or seven records of such and they were all kids. The Appalachians lose so many people per year and that's always open, but this one mountain loses six kids and it's permanently closed off? Especially since one of the kids disappeared a couple years prior.

She's curious, planning on staying there a couple months, just to see the hullabaloo. Her parents and friends know about this, it's common for her to disappear into the mountains for a while and come back with a crazed smile, scratches and bandages, and a ton of stories about the encounters there. So yeah. They don't think too much of it when she's gone for a few months. When those few months turn into a year and a half, thats when they worry. And soon, another year later, they want a search. But it's a forbidden mountain, people are gonna get in trouble, and so one friend goes and hikes it alone. Just to see the remains of Pancake's stuff: a tattered tent, her old camera, some notebooks long since damaged, heck even some clothes and such. They play the recording on the camera when they get home and it just shows Pancake driving up the mountain, being all excited about the adventure, showing the campsite she set up, this massive hole not too far away. It all goes smoothly until she sets the camera up for something and wanders off. And. Doesn't come back. Camera is rolling for days. She doesn't come back. A storm hits and knocks the camera over. Nothing. It keeps rolling till it runs out of space. And there's. Nothing left.

So for a good chunk when Pancake was Underground, her friends and family thought she either fully returned to the wild, got kidnapped, or just straight-up died. Like where did she go, what happened to her. And they can't tell authorities much because she went onto a very illegal mountain

Missing posters went up that soon weathered away, and soon they all thought she died. All while the town changed.

One shop closed, another started up, soon the town grows a bit bigger. Abandoned places get bought, and bought places get abandoned. A couple stores stay but others disappear. The church stays too. Somehow.

All this while Pancake is having a rivalry with a cowboy whom she soon marries and considers having a family with.

When the Underground is freed, the first thing that shows up on the news are the monsters that are released. So her friends and family know about the monsters. It takes Pancake a couple days to get back to the town.

She knows it's changed. It's been over a decade. Almost a decade and a half. Maybe. It's been a LONG time. And she knows just how much would have changed. Is the town still there? If it is, what is still there? Are her parents still alive? Who died while she was gone? Do they think she's dead?

It's daunting. She doesn't like daunting. And it takes a lot before she heads back

And yeah. STUFF CHANGED. The 7-11 and a video store are still somehow there, but one shop was shut down for another shop across the town. The school was rebuilt, there's apartments up. Things have gotten more modern and more retro together. She knew stuff would change. But it didn't stop the whiplash.

One of her best friends was at the 7-11 when she rolled into the parking lot, and holy crap, the two of them were stunned. And news quickly spread when she left that she was back home.

With a husband.

Shocker that she was one of the few people who fell into the Underground with monsters. And married one of them. Cuz yeah that is a Pancake thing to do

Her parents were also shocked she was still alive. She came up to that door, hesitant, and when someone answered it. Yeah.

It was a kid she hadn't seen before. Her brother's kid. Who's heard of the aunt that went missing. And now she's standing in the doorway with some Monsters behind her. And nervously asking where her parents were.

It was just. It wasn't a tearful reunion, as it was shell shocking. And "Oh yeah ofc you'd fall into a society of monsters"

Her mom was both surprised and unsurpised that she got married Underground. It's been over ten years, why would she not. It's just. Wow she married a really good lookin guy. Until he took his hat off and then it made more sense. Yeah. Of course Pancake would marry him pfft

And Pancake has to get used to this new town she grew up in. It's both familiar and not. It's both the same and not. There's still rodeos. But there's apartments where the fields used to be. And the town would get bigger because of the influx of monsters. Lots of people follow the sheriff. And if the sheriff is settling down in this tiny town, then so be it

So yeah.

if Starlo ever misses Lucifer and can't really get to him for some reason he goes out and just. Takes out a rubber duck and stares at it a bit

TW: Abandonment Issues, sleep deprivation, and reasoning for why Starlo hadn't heard from Lucifer (it's slightly hidden in the context clues)

If Starlo is, for some reason, unable to get to Lucifer, he would most definitely just take out a rubber duck, most likely the Deputy Duck Lucifer made him, and look at it.

If Lucifer's gone for like a short time, like a week or two with or without notice, he'll think of it as a soft reasoning. Same goes for long times with notice, he'll just miss him and stare at the duck with nostalgia and hope that Lucifer returns soon.

He just holds that duck close to him, pets it when he gets sad, looks at it for comfort in desperate situations, brings it out to make him confident with making decisions, and even sleeps with it at night so that it feels Lucifer will be there with him, even while he sleeps! (And so he doesn't feel alone at night. :( )

However, if Lucifer doesn't say anything about coming back after a long time, say, 3 or more weeks without notice or is gone longer than what he said he was going to be?

The man is completely zoned out with just staring out at the duck and when he got it from Lucifer, only for it to start making him remember from when he got it to times with Lucifer spent together before and after.

This poor man is just staring at the thing for hours and even sometimes longer, as he's either trying to get his crystal to work or trying to get telepathic communication with Lucifer again. Only for both attempts to fail horribly and if Lucifer doesn't come back after a long time, Starlo ends up back at the Fiestyj (autocorrect, this is the only time you saved me) Five hideout, sitting curled up in a ball, holding his knees in his arms.

You know what he's also got right in front of/beside him?

That duck.

He only takes his eyes off of it when Ceroba visits to check on him or whenever he needs to sleep. (In this case, since he gets restless, it is rare.) It's just fully in his sights. It's rare for him to eat too, but when he does, he brings it with him to eat.

Starlo tries to think that Lucifer is ok... Lucifer has to be ok...

Lucifer is ok.

He is fine.

He has to be ok.

He's almost immortal, nothing wrong can happen to him, right?

He's fine, Starlo, don't be overthinking.

He's coming back for you.

He said he'd see you tomorrow, maybe he forgot or got busy!

Maybe he's just spending time at the hotel with his daughter or doing something that deals with extermination again.

Maybe he's just taking a nap at the palace.

No Angel could defeat him without being skillful and having a holy weapon, could they? He's the strongest sin in the universe(s)! He has to be ok!

Yeah, maybe he's just taking a year break! Or maybe he's just taking a year's nap? He'll come back after the year's over...

The duck tipped over once and he picked it up. It's surprising how the duck finally fell after a year, even when Starlo kept his eye on it. Nothing even touched it! After that, it never fell again.

Weird... Oh well, guess he can continue staring at the duck and awaiting for Lucifer to return!

HEY!! I've made this self-ship side blog out of pure impulse, but I've been thinking about the idea for a while, and I figured why not?

Anyways! You can call me Aster. I use any/all pronouns, and I'm AroAceAgender! I've been self-shipping privately to myself for a while, and I'm a bit nervous at showing it publicly. But no one's gonna stop me, so!! Yippee!!

I'm more of a casual self-shipper, and my interests tend to flop around fandoms a lot. Sometimes I'd get back into an old fandom randomly, who knows! It all depends on the brainrot.

Yeah yeah yeah! All of this! If Orion is the older one, then why is he still living at home? He's proven himself to be more mature than Starlo, he's participating diligently in family business. So if he's the older one, why hasn't he moved out yet? Started his own business? Gotten a spouse and kid(s)? Surely Crestina and Solomon would be concerned about Orion the same way that they express concern about Starlo not achieving the expected milestones of having a wife and settling down. But they don't. Likely because they don't expect him to take those next steps in life/independence just yet.

Plus, the way that Orion talks to Clover strikes me as being more in the older teen/young adult demographic. Like, yeah, sure Orion is more mature than Starlo in the sense that he gets work done. But he's still complaining under his breath about Clover while they're in earshot and are being dismissive in a way that's pretty immature.

(*Clover Voice* I have ears Orion. And not just the corn ones that're all around us.)

I mean, that could just be his personality, there are plenty of older people out there with more immature personalities. But this doesn't strike me as just personality speaking here, if you catch my drift. (Also, Starlo doesn't speak under his breath during interactions with him, for comparison. Especially not to sass someone. Again, it could just be a difference in personality because Starlo isn't rude like that but I don't think that's the only reason.)

Yeah, this is just capital "J" jealousy directed at his "bro" because Starlo gets to have fun all the time, meanwhile Orion is stuck at home, feeling like a goldfish that's starting to outgrow its bowl. Calling what Starlo does just "shootouts" and "inconveniencing pedestrians" is a bit harsh (though, considering that Starlo kidnapped Clover and imprisoned Martlet when they were just trying to pass through and also had a shootout as a mission, he's not exactly wrong), but well. Orion wants the chance to grow out of the house, move on from the double-decker rocket ship bed and floor corn and glow in the dark stars on every surface of his childhood bedroom, get out into the world, figure out a life for himself outside of just work and the family business. But he can't. Someone has to help with the farm and Starlo has already proved that it's not gonna be him. Orion is envious of Starlo's freedom. And Starlo likely got his freedom because he's older so he was born into an advantage and could move out first.

Tl;dr: I feel like Starlo being the older sibling makes more sense than Orion being the older sibling. Age ≠ maturity/how responsible someone is.

I know that it's common fanon belief to see Starlo as the younger sibling between him and Orion, but I actually like the idea of Starlo being the older brother and what it means for his family dynamic. Generally, the older sibling is expected to be the more responsible and mature sibling in the family. There's this expectation that the older sibling sets an example for the younger sibling(s) and that they'll look after the family/business once the parents get too old to do so themselves. So, what does it mean when the older sibling sorta betrays those familial expectations by behaving immaturely and ditching the family to do their own thing?

I'm trying to figure out how to put this into words in a clear and concise way, but I feel like if it's a case of Starlo being the younger brother, then there's this sorta "Ah, that's just the younger brother acting like a kid, y'know how it is. He'll grow out of it" dynamic, whereas if Starlo is the older brother, then it's more of a "Okay, he should've grown out of this by now, why's he still acting like this? Even Orion is more mature than him; what is going on?" sorta deal. (This frustration would be especially felt by Orion, who has to pick up Starlo's slack in his stead because his older brother isn't mature enough to work like he's supposed to!!!)

These are just personal musings, don't take my word as gospel! You can still do tons of interesting things with the Sunnyside family while having Starlo be the younger brother and Orion the older one. I just find myself gravitating more towards seeing Starlo as the older sibling.
