“Horace- are you... crying?”
Horace removes his glasses and rubs his eyes with the sleeve of his sweater. It’s thick, baggy, and a pale icy blue. It’s oversized but cinches at the wrists, neck, and waist. Or, at least it’s meant to. The sleeves still slip down onto Horace’s palms, and sometimes the neck will slide along his shoulder. He’s had it since college, Baxter knows, but watching him now it seems to consume his tiny frame more than it once did. It worries him. “It doesn’t matter. I’m sure you’ll just argue that it’s a cheap tactic to get you on my side anyways.” His voice sounds slightly tight, but the only real evidence he’s crying are his hitching breath and the wet lines that trail his cheeks.
“Wha- Horace, of course I care if you’re crying! I didn’t realize you were so upset about this.” Baxter reaches out to touch Horace’s shoulder, but the other quickly pulls away. Horace let his hands drop from his face, his glasses still held in one hand. With his eyes exposed there’s nothing to hide the fat tears that continue to well and fall. His expression is a muddled twist of anger and hurt.
“You didn’t realize!? How could you POSSIBLY NOT REALIZE!? I’ve informed you so many times! About the harassment, the way he crosses my boundaries, the way he insults me, all of it! He makes me angry on purpose and when I GET angry you always insist it’s MY fault for letting him ‘bush my buttons’!!! This isn’t just him!! It’s YOU! You sit back and you LET him do this to me and now you want to claim you NEVER REALIZED!?” The outburst is followed by a sharp sob, and then a meek whimper. Baxter stands in a stunned silence. The puddle of guilt that had been forming in his chest explodes into a sea of disgrace. Have Atticus’ actions really been affecting him like this for all this time?
“I’m... I’m sorry, Horace. For what it’s worth. I, I really didn’t think-”
“Exactly. You don’t think. Not when it comes to the real world. You need to live in a bubble where you’re always the good guy. You love to claim I’m immature, but clearly you’re the one still living in a fairy tale.” Horace stares down at the floor. He wouldn’t have been able to see Baxter’s face anyways, but he still doesn’t have the courage. His explosive fury had faded now, and the smoke and rubble of hurt burned his throat. “... I wanted to be friends again,” he mumbles. “I did. I really tried. But... maybe it has simply been too long. Maybe it isn’t meant to-”
Horace is abruptly cut off by Baxter pulling him into a tight hug. He can hear the rapid beat of Baxter’s heart in his chest. For a moment Horace tempted to shove him away, but quickly he goes limp into the embrace. It feels nice to be held with his anger and energy spent. He doesn’t hug back. He simply leans his weight into Baxter’s chest, his head tucked up under his chin.  “I’ll fix this. I swear to God I will. I’ll- I’ll move Heaven and Earth to make things right between us, starting with Atticus. I really fucked this up, but I’ll clean up this whole mess. I promise.”
Horace is tempted to ask him when he’s ever cleaned up his own mess before, but he keeps the comment to himself. This promise is something he’s wanted to hear for years, though the reality of it hasn’t quite sunk in. “... Start with getting me a coffee, would you? I’m exhausted.”

The fandom is freaking out because after all the dream fakeout teases, Nace finally kissed… but it also happened inside a fakeout alternate reality. Why do you think this happened? This is like showing the wedding dress before the wedding happens, which means the wedding will be called off for sure because you don’t spoil the dress. Nace was just spoiled and I feel sick.
Tumblr media
(read the whole thing pls)
Why do I think it happened?
Let me give you a situation:
I have a pair of actors with amazing chemistry and majority of the fans want their characters together. In the process of establishing their slow burn, you realize that either of the characters are too proud/insecure to admit, and you need to test their untold but known feelings.
Le temporary girlfriend with an asshole bro.
Le Wraith.
Le Nark.
Le vindictive witch aunt.
Le split soul possession.
I, one of the awesome writers, had put Nace through A LOT in season 3 (and by that I mean blatantly pummeled my baby boi Ace to the ground). Then I get news that I have to put a hitch/hook to my star money-making ship by the 13th episode.
And what better way to emotionally weaken/scare one part of the ship and propel their entire dynamic AND basically feed my audience without actually feeding them all in one fell swoop?
What better way to give them some material and show them that the chase isn't over?
I show them that the happy ending was pseudo. I show them that it's a possibility, something that you can catch more of and in extension, if you stay with me.
It's my job and I think I have done it well. For a part, I have.
Only, I may not have realized that the ship that I created unconsciously is sensitive for my fans because they were of the fair assumption that this particular slowburn will have a happy ending.
No chase after that.
Just enjoying fruits of labor and shipping.
So, you were all caught unawares. You were of the mindset and EMOTION that if Nace happens, it will be one big happy ending to the pining. You finally get to step into the domestic bliss section of cannon.
Give a hungry child a chocolate. They try to bite through the surface and find that the chocolate only runs as deep as a coating on a rock that says "haha you thought you'd gotten the chocolate? you gotta wait for the real one".
Did you taste the chocolate? Yes.
Did you get the whole chocolate? No.
Did I promise to give you a chocolate next season? Absolutely.
Is waiting going to be hell? You betcha.
Now, I get that the dreamscape twist would have made some of us crazy and cheated. Fair enough.
But since I'm virtually incapable of seeing the Nace ship as a whole at the moment, I'm willing to look at the individual parts. Nancy and Ace have a bumpy ride in front of them: Nancy can't be with the one person she loves and Ace can't watch Nancy push herself away from him in fear (fear of what he thinks is their supernaturally unrelated uncursed future).
Let the angst pour from every pore of their skin and that shall make up for the chocolate coating we were told to make do with till renewal.
You're all entitled to your opinion - be it hate, sadness, AGONY, hopeful, annoyed... But please try and cut some slack for the artists - both of the dramatic and literary factions - for this season. They weren't working with the most ideal of regulations yet they tried to deliver the emotions.
