hi! i'm new to comics and i got in through reading your fics and wayne family adventures. i've since started reading more of the mainstream verse and i realized that most comic fans consider wfa to be totally fanon. you're one of the few i saw that disagrees. would you mind elaborating a lil on why? i'm too new to really form an opinion either way but i'd like to know your's!

So I think it's really important to be clear on definitions here:

Canon means it's part of an official text. It's literally in a comic (or book or movie or other property) published or licensed by DC.

Fanon means it's made up by fans. That doesn't mean bad or good, it just means that it comes from fandom and is not part of the official text.

Wayne Family Adventures is an official licensed comic by DC, so by definition, it cannot be fanon. That doesn't mean everyone has to like it, but it's not a fan comic. It's an official DC product. It's not fanon.

Now, WFA isn't part of the main DCU canon. It takes place in a separate universe. The Jason in Batman #138 and the Jason in WFA are not the same and they are having very different experiences. (And I'm sure the Jason in WFA would be grateful if he knew.)

But that's no different than a comic that takes place in an alternate universe, like Dark Knights of Steel or DCeased, or a movie like Blue Beetle or a show like My Adventures with Superman. They all take place in their own universes, but all of those universes are canon. None of them are fanon.

What I think most people mean when they say WFA is fanon is that WFA draws on tropes and characterizations that are popular in fandom. Which...yes, absolutely. This is on purpose, and honestly, it pisses me off when people complain about it. (Not you, anon! Your question was lovely, you just triggered my unskippable cut scene of dialogue. Sorry lol.)

Wayne Family Adventures is probably the single best idea DC has had in the 20 years I've been reading comics. (The second best was the kids and YA graphic novel lines.)

I just checked, and WFA has 1.3 MILLION subscribers. That's more than every floppy comic starring Batman sells in a month, combined. It's more than literally any superhero comic has sold in decades - in this century! The combined strips have over A HUNDRED MILLION VIEWS. That is bonkerstown. That is a readership like DC hasn't seen since the 1970s. That is unparalleled success, and it's introducing characters like Kate Kane and Duke Thomas to a whole new audience.

Now, WFA was clearly designed to appeal to Batfans who were active on social media and fanfic sites like AO3 and Wattpad, and Webtoon readers. The readership of Webtoon is mostly young and female. Fandom as a whole is mostly female. The writer of WFA is female.

And maybe I'm not being fair here, but when I see people dismiss WFA as "just fanon," I always catch a whiff of "It's not a real Batman comic. It's a girl comic for girls."

I have spent the past 20 years begging DC (and Marvel, DC is not alone in this) to see women as a viable audience - as their largest potential growth audience! I have watched in dumbfounded frustration as they ignored the juggernaut success of Raina Telgemeier and Ngozi Ukazu and Alice Oseman running rings around the NY Times bestseller list and counted a 50k shipment here and there as a resounding triumph. I have literally seen them throw out survey responses from women because "those women had an agenda." (This is a true story. 2011 was rough, y'all.)

And all of a sudden, they gave us a comic actually catering to women and young people and fandom, and they put it on the most popular, current, modern platform for comics availably - and it's brilliant. It's smart and funny and stunningly drawn and every episode makes clever, inventive use of the scrolling format. They FINALLY gave us a girl comic for girls, and it's a masterpiece.

And yes, it riffs on fanon concepts. It also has its roots firmly in mainstream DCU canon. It references deep cuts. CRC Payne and StarBite know their shit. Jason Todd being a bookworm may be a fanon staple, but he does plenty of reading - including Jane Austen - in the 100% canon mainstream DCU comics.

It's not going to be for everything, because nothing is. It's completely fine if you don't like WFA. No one has to read it or enjoy it. If you're into Batman for the darkness and the crime and the ongoing plotlines and the angst, WFA won't be for you, and that's totally fine!

But to finally, finally be valued as a reader by DC, to have them do something smart and innovative and so, so well executed, and have the exact people they made it for dismiss it out of hand because Bruce has a "World's Okayest Dad" mug or whatever? Yeah, that chafes.

So, because i have a love for media preservation, and recently got a VPN, I figured I could compile some stuff from websites I couldn't visit before, like the Minmie website. The Minmie website is region-locked for the US, so I'm on a Japanese server. I chose Japan because this is a region that I know Minmie products were sold in. Like the Fulla website, it's partially lost. For the same reasons as the Fulla site, too. Ruffle simply can't open a lot of the archived pages. However, because Minmie was smart, we can actually see the home page due to the site not opening on a flash-based loading screen.

This capture is from February of 2006, two years after the site was launched and six before it would be taken down. The 2004 capture's flash elements are inaccessible (but still there!), and for some odd reason the animation of Minmie and her man(?)* on the Vespa is inaccessible on every later capture.

*Edit: It's her brother. I was writing this as I was going along, I had no clue who he was at first😭

That blue part of the background is animated, and the text scrolls. I forgot to capture it in the video I think, but the red mailbox hops up and down when you hover on it.

The top animation seems to restart after a certain amount of time.

The 10 squares at the bottom bring you these images, and they're the same in every capture.

Slightly problematic "Attack Gangster" caption aside...

It's kind of weird how low quality these are, right?? This is the official website. These images literally come directly from the page those squares lead to. Also that last one of the boy character terrifies me. Also....does the seventh image imply that the boy's name is Min and the girl's name is Mie?? It would be hella weird if it did, considering that after the DJ Min image, the name Minmie was exclusively used to describe the girl in merchandising. Because they never used the boy again. I didn't even know he existed until now.

I love Minmie's art style so I'm kind of disturbed by the way male characters look in it-

I find it really interesting the way they draw her jawline sometimes, it's very round. They only seemed to do this in the 2000s, after 2011 she had an exclusively sharp jaw.

It's surprisingly low effort on everything but those little animations and transitions, there. The pages listed on the buttons are inaccessible no matter what capture you're on, although in the October 2008 capture, the "Character" button leads to a different page with content that Ruffle can't run. This is different from the others in which the buttons don't do anything at all when you click on them on the front page's archive. The "mail" option leads to an error page in the 2006 capture, although similar to the Character page, in every other capture it doesn't do anything at all. The "Shop" option leads to a site to purchase the Minmie domain instead of an archive for some reason. The "board" button seems to have lead to either a chat room or image board, but it's not accessible from the main menu and the URL is a swf, which I can't access. There's an "about me" page in the URL tab on the archive, but nothing loads.

HOWEVER!

We still have the site map, and the site map actually gives us the pages the buttons led to.

The shop page looked like this. I don't find it necessary to screenshot all of the options on the menu because all of them are pretty much the same, just with a different title, sometimes a longer page, and different inventory (the photos of which were not archived). Although I think it's very amusing how one of the shop pages is just named "bunch of keys". The "New Product" gif's background would rapidly flash black and white.

Like I said earlier, the pages look mostly the same. Because of this I only screenshotted the pages that had a different layout. Sadly the shop page is the only part archived through the site map.

Now we look to the URL tab. There's several gifs that are unavailable, and while it was also unavailable there's two gifs with the word "avatar" in their titles. This might also be nothing, though. The domain squatting sites were and continue to be archived even after the original site went down, so a majority of the URLs are from those. A lot of the old Minmie files lead to a blank or unavailable screen, however.

But back to what I did find:

There's this strange part of the site I found, and it's a menu with some futuristic graphics. It has a lot of moving parts, and buttons.

I have no clue what any of these lead to, the URLs that have names relating to some of these buttons just lead to the menu, again. The image to the side is blocked, and there's only one date of capture for the three URLS, so for now that's a mystery. I assume the background was a repeating pattern based on the order of the missing images in the back. Green binary over a black background, perhaps?

I found parts of the index page from 2012/11. Any other captures of this iteration of the site are fully unavailable, with many of the assets meeting the same fate as the right image in the futuristic menu page. These are super cute.

The red text is an error message. The catalog has the same layout. I think the most interesting thing about this version of the site is that one of the catalog pages has an option that says "Minmie doll". I would love it if anyone could give me any insight about that.

The 2011/12 site also has Wallpapers listed. They are all unavailable. there's multiple game pages (for both versions of the site, actually) but they both have nothing at all archived.

I'm kind of pissed about this comic??? Like why put Mie all over the marketing and merch and then....do this??? I was wondering why the brand failed so bad and the site died so quick, but now I think I may have my answer? I seriously think the 2010s cutting Min out of the picture was a good thing, if he acted like this.

After successfully calming down, you reached into your back pocket and fetched out your phone.

A small bit of terror mixed with frustration ran through your veins when you saw that it was down to ten percent.

With no time to waste, you hurried to your contacts, shooting Seora a quick text.

You sat for a few seconds, thinking it over; it sounded like a good idea, but the flaws were immediately pointed out to you.

As typing bubbles popped up from Seora's, most likely, long paragraph, your phone began powering down before completely cutting off.

The panic you felt earlier returned ten-fold. "No. No. No. No," you whispered as you repeatedly pressed the power button; the screen cut back on shortly only to show that it was currently on zero percent before cutting back off.

You pressed your face into your hands in defeat, allowing your dead phone to fall into your lap; you were doomed.

The excited giggles and deep chuckles brought you back from your mini-self-pitying fest.

Right.

You were stuck under the table of BTS during their fan-meeting with no means of communication.

At this point, all you could do was wait.

For the past two hours, you've been stuck in the same position: sitting, legs crossed, with your hands buried deep into your lap.

Your mind had been in shambles since your phone died, leaving you stranded and at the mercy of fate. At this point, anything could happen, whether it be you getting caught or actually making it out without consequences.

Every time you felt yourself slipping into a trance, thinking that you were just dreaming, a sharp squeal of happiness would tear you away as a fan got a brief moment to speak with the famous idols.

Though, occasionally, you'd move sideways when one of them stretched their legs a little too close to you.

You didn't think you'd last if you had to wait another hour.

Fortunately, your prayers must have been answered because not even ten minutes later, the announcer went on to thank everyone for coming out to support BTS.

As the idol group stood up from the table, giving the audience an in-sync bow, you could hear the whining of the fans wanting the fan-meeting to last longer; soon enough, BTS exited the room, leaving you to sigh and breathe in relief.

Shots of nerves left your frame as you heard the sound of the audience dwindle. The room was as empty as it was when you and the volunteers left to take group pictures.

This was your chance to leave before the cleaning crew came.

Heaving yourself up onto your knees, you began crawling toward the end of the table. Just as you reached the end, you were stopped by something holding onto your shoe.

You wanted to turn around to see what was holding you back, but the sound of the metal door, that led you to your doom, opening filled your ears followed by a male's voice, "The room's empty now, so I'll go fetch a few staff members to help me gather the chairs before mopping. We should be done in less than two hours."

You have to hurry!

Tugging harder, you snatched and kicked your foot until it was set free; you allowed a relief-filled sigh to exit your body.

But relief immediately turned into shock when a loud crash echoed all around you.

Looking over your shoulder to find the source of the noise, you were met with the other end of the table broken down onto the floor.

The voice from earlier spoke out, causing your heart to stutter in fear within your chest. "What the hell was that?" The sound of footsteps grew nearer as the man came towards you.

Panic filled your body for the umpteenth time that day.

You were going to get caught!

With no time to think, you did the first thing that entered your mind: you reached for your foot, yanked off your shoe, and threw it as far as you could from underneath the table.

The sound of the shoe meeting one of the chairs caused a bigger crash to fill the room as it knocked over neighboring chairs.

You nearly shed tears as the direction of the man's footsteps drifted away from your direction towards the fallen chairs.

Peeking underneath the purple cloth, you watched as the man stared down at your flame-decorated Converse in confusion before picking up the chairs. Taking the chance, you rolled out from underneath the table before scurrying towards the door like a bug.

You cracked open the door wide enough for your body to slip through, nearly sobbing when you made it outside.

Raising yourself onto shaky legs, you allowed tears of relief to well up inside of your eyes. You couldn't believe you made it.

Your moment of serenity didn't last too long due to the sound of incoming footsteps.

Looking over, you were met with the face of the teller from earlier that day. "Ms. Han? Where is your shoe and what are you still doing here? Volunteers were dismissed nearly four hours ago."

Your mouth opened and closed several times. "I-I..." Shit. You didn't think you'd run into someone so soon; you'd hoped you'd make it to the nearest restroom and pretend that you had massive diarrhea or something.

Think, Y/N! Think!  Your mind screamed as the teller stared down at you, waiting for an answer.

"My shoe mysteriously disappeared while I was in the restroom. I spent the last three hours searching for them before giving up," you stated in the best ditzy impression you could muster. "I suspect the Nargles are behind it."

The teller was quiet for a few seconds, trying to understand your sentence. "The...Nargles?"

"Yes, the Nargles. Mischievous creatures they are. But I suppose they're far away now, celebrating their haul." You smiled, swaying gently side-to-side.

On the inside, you were crying tears of embarrassment, but you knew this would be the only way to get out without having to really explain what happened.

The look on the teller's face was priceless at the act you put on. Before he could say anything, you began walking away in a dream-like daze. "I best get home before it gets too late. I hear that the Wrackspurts love to come out around midnight." And as soon as you were out of the teller's sight, you sprinted out of the building as fast as you could go.

The teller had a confused and disturbed look on his face as he watched you walk away with one shoe on foot.

He couldn't help but repeat the names of the strange creatures you brought up in the midst of his questioning you; so into his thoughts, he didn't notice the door opening, allowing the body of the man that almost caught you earlier to come out.

"Hey Ken, you won't believe this," the man spoke, breaking the teller away from his thoughts.

"Huh?" Ken asked, looking over to his friend. "What is it, Nathan?"

"I think one of the members left their hoodie behind, I found it underneath the table," the man said, lifting an oversized red hoodie before holding up a flame-decorated shoe. "Oh, I also found this shoe sitting in the middle of the room."

Ken's eyes widened at the shoe, he recognized it: it was the missing shoe you were looking for. "The Nargles," he gasped, his mouth falling open in awe.

Looking from Nathan to the shoe, Ken snatched the shoe away from him before sprinting down the hall, calling for you, "Ms. Han! Here's your shoe! The Nargles left behind in the fan-meeting room!"

Nathan was taken aback by this. "Nargles? What the fuck are Nargles?"

I'd say she'd be pretty well known, has a good amount of followers

She's not famous by any means, but there are a few teasing comments from her classmates and or friends. For example: "Oh my god, is that (insert her username)! Can I get an autograph???" Y'know, stuff like that

I'd say she's chronically online, constantly quoting the latest memes and is sort of up to the trends. Would do the typical dumb dares people have made up, but is always doing them on the brink of the trends end

I'd say her favorite app is... Tiktok? Yeah, looks like she'd be obsessed with that app

Knows more about the news and global warming and all of the stuff that the adults are supposed to hear and worry about. I'd feel like she'd have multiple weird facts pop up on her FYP and would either spill the horrors of her 'fun facts' to her mother, or would run to Lilith to tell her yet another fun fact she managed to find

And as for the Instagram bit, as previously stated, she'd have quite the amount of followers. I'd feel like she would post her 'epic stunts' that she did in the backyard, you could hear a faint voice of her mom yelling her full name before she cuts the video short. Also is the type of person to post horrendous memes on her page (I am guilty of that crime 😔)

She always leaves encouraging comments on her friends Instagram posts and stuff, I feel like I should put that in

As for her texting style, it's caos. No commas, no new rows, no punctuation, no nothing. Literally texts like this

She knows grammar and has the ability to type correctly, she just doesn't feel like being grammatically correct when texting. It's your problem you can't read it 😒

Is actually pretty famous... Well, at least on her other profile

She's that 'aesthetic smart girl' you see on your page that never shows her face. Also does bomb powerpoint presentations and posts them on her account (ppl eat that stuff upppp)

Eda would be the only one to know about her secret account and she swears to keep her mouth shut. Although the secret account does slip out of Edas mind often, so Lilith doesn't have to worry all that much about the word spreading

But, on her main account which she shares with her friends... It's literally just her friends. Of course, you have her sister and people she hangs out with/is cool with, as well as her club members, but thats pretty much it

On her main, she mostly posts stuff about her school and her successes, such as the awards she gets in contests of the medals/trophies she recives

Again, Eda will the the one hyping her up in her comments, but she doesn't dare to hype her up on her secret account, as to not rish accidentally spilling the beans in the comments somehow

For her favorite app... I'd have to say: 'Instagram'. I would've said Pinterest but it doesn't quite sit right with me fully... Instagram feels like a better fit

Always scrolling through reels, but also opens Tiktok from time to time (specifically to search for the memes Eda is quoting so that she isn't as confused)

Texts normally, like how you'd see people text on the daily. But, if she's mad, I can also see her writing painfully grammatically correct sentences with words that everybody forgets the meaning of

Raine would be avarege in the followers count. They wouldn't be all that famous, but they also wouldn't be completely invisible

Definitely is the type of person to have their account private for a few years before toughening up and macking their account public. That was oddly specific but we'll move on

They'd mostly post selfies with their friends, of course an occasional recording of their progress with their violin as well as some bard magic tricks (like that whistling in the cup)

Doesn't get that many comments on their posts, but when they do they make sure to either like it or fully reply

Isn't as chronically online as Eda but is up to date with the memes. Is always able to quote with or continue a quote Eda began. Trends always somehow end up on their for you page when they're scrolling on Tiktok

Favorite app? Oddly enough: 'Twitter' 'X'. Loves to read the drama people have, and when there is nothing to do they just scroll onto people's accounts

And for the texting style: the perfect middle. Just enough punctuation to make it make sense, but not too formal to make it look like a business e-mail
