I like Nebula as a service in many ways -- the site is lightweight and their servers are very stable and it's really easy to find the specific people whose stuff I want to watch. But the thing about Youtube is that it's way easier for me to find people sitting down for three hours to infodump about a piece of media they like in nitty gritty detail. That's my hobby, and I like watch and listening to other people perform my hobby just like a dancer might watch competitive dance for fun or a speedrunner watch other speedrunners stream games that are unfamiliar to them.
#fannish#I'm burned by the fact that in the creator economy *some* people clearly consider their nerd shit better than other nerd shit#more on par with the “edutainment” of channels that discuss science or politics#People who talk about fandom to “normies”#Like I'm incredibly fucking impressed KingK and Liam Triforce and CURSED JUDGE OH MY GOD SINCE WHEN are on there#b/c I fully expected them to be too “low brow” despite the production value of their videos#but I fully suspect someone like PakPak or Veridis Joe or Jimothy Cool or Minaxa or AurumAlex#or hell even Mother's Basement or Steph Sterling is never gonna be on Nebula#b/c they're not the “right kind” of content creator for that platform#I would love to be proven wrong! I would love for every video creator I like to not be on Youtube anymore!#But Nebula *is* curated and *prides itself* on its curation#and while they talk about only being sure to have people with good reputations and progressive politics#I also think there is an element of “what is respectable and approachable to a mass audience” aspect to it#and people making content for a mass audience cannot be trusted not to throw my nerd ass under a bus#Fingers Crossed Asad Anjum gets on there at some point though
