No but I'm so happy you all liked that Leg and Rulie drawing, and the last few little comics/requests I did, it's so fun reading all the tags/comments people write and interacting with them. I'm really grateful for that!!!! 🥹💖

i just had this thought of yapper!gf being taken on a fishing trip with jj and him getting frustrated because she’s scaring off the fish and then she gets annoyed back at him 😩😩😩
lol soooo cuteee! ˚ ༘✶ ⋆。˚ ⁀➷ yapper!gf x jj
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
jj had been planning to go on a little fishing trip for a few days now, but because you've been dragging him around town he hadn't gotten a chance to. but today was the day, and because you go with him everywhere, he let you come with him.
"are we going to have some lunch after this?" you ask hand in hand with your boyfriend as he leads you to the HMS pogue.
"are you hungry already? didn't you just have some ice cream?"
"that was a snack jj, are we going to eat the fish? if you catch any i mean." you giggle, looking up at him through your lashes.
"whaddia mean if, when. when i catch some." he corrects.
"right of course! what am i supposed to do then, help you fish?"
"juuus' relax, i provide the sustenance while you sit there n'look pretty." he jokes, lifting his hand to help you get on the boat.
as you arrived at the spot, the tranquil waters stretched out before you, jj wasted no time in setting up his fishing rods. you sit at the edge of the boat and wait patiently watching your boyfriend flip his hat around.
"its really sexy when you do that." you smile up at him, covering the sun with your hand.
"what? flippin' my hat backward?" he grins, turning back to look at you.
you nod and turn back to look at the water, leaning against the edge to see if you could spot any fish.
"its really nice out...i saw this thing that um- that said, would you sell your boyfriend to make your dog live forever? and i thought about it, i would."
he scoffs and leans back to do whatever people do when trying to reel in a fish.
"we don't even have a dog!"
"i know, but it's the principle!" you argue back, dipping your hand into the water and swishing it around.
"you're scarin' the fish away dude! c'mon sit down." he snaps his fingers at you making you glare at him and sit back in the middle of the boat.
 "i was just checking the temperature." you shrug with a small smile, but jj wasn't amused.
"nough' of that and you yapping my ear off, like i love you babe, but next time bring a book or a crossword puzzle or something...." jj huffs and baits his hook and casts his line once more.
pissed at him you decide to give him the silent treatment and pretend he isn't even there.
after some time, in silence, jj starts to feel a little guilty but then he hears you again.
"i shoulda' pushed you in the water." you furrow your eyebrows and shake your head, just couldn't stay quiet for much longer. "alright alright, come help me, i'll teach you how to do this." he laughs, offering his hand to help you up. rolling your eyes to take hold of his hand as he pulls you up and stands behind you, placing the fishing rod in your hands and wrapping his own hands around yours to help with guidance.
"swing it back aaaand- wait." he lets go of your hands to let you try being in control and stands beside you with his hands on his hips. in no time a fish was pulling at the hook, jj boyishly excited for you, telling you to reel it in. you try your best to be fast and get the fish out of the water.
"that's what im talkin' about baby, atta girl!" he cheers and takes hold of the fishing rod for you, grabbing onto the fish, and placing it in a bucket.
"i can't believe i got a fish!" you squeal, turning over to him with a smile.
"come here..." he beams and grabs onto your face with two hands to press a bunch of sweet annoying little kisses on your cheeks.
"nooo! you touched the fish! and i'm still pissed at you." you scrunch your face up but that only makes him wrap his arms around your waist and lift you up like a doll with your hands on his shoulders.
"gimme a kiss, and then we'll call it a day, yeah?" he squints his eyes and tilts his head, you roll your eyes and nod. wrapping your arms around his neck and leaning in to give him a proper kiss.
once satisfied, your boyfriend sets you down with a smile.
"alright. let's get outta here." he spins you around and smacks your ass playfully. ᥫ᭡

Little things the Freedom Pals do for a New Kid!Reader during and after a battle.
Part one with Raccoon and Friends: ☆here☆
@everythingwasnormalhere, this part two was inspired by your comment!
Tumblr media
Professor Timmy:
☆ Professor Timmy can't often get to you in a timely manner if dangers coming your way, but he makes up for it with his stellar ability to communicate via his mind. It's a lot harder for someone like Tupperware or Wonder-Tweak to yell across the battlefield and be heard amidst the heat of battle. However, seeing as he speaks in your mind, it's infinitely easier for him to warn you of an incoming attack or a more strategic maneuver to take down enemies.
"On your left, New Kid! Brace for impact, I'll provide assistance shortly."
☆ Professor Timmy likes to let you in on his plans first, even letting you be one of the first to see his incredible franchise plan.
"This will be the end to our struggles, if only the Raccoon and Friends agree to your terms..."
Tupperware:
☆ He's got some pretty intense armor, so a lot like Captain Diabetes, he's willing to rake a few hits for you in the battlefield. Just... not too many, he doesn't want to bang up his mother's Tupperware.
"Watch out New Kid, coming through with the Tupperware tornado!"
☆ He doesn't have any food or snacks to share after the battle, given that he's wearing everything you'd usually store food in. Luckily, he's got money, so post-battle if you wanna hang out, he'll gladly head to an arcade or take you to the Dispensary/KFC.
"I'm hungry, you hungry, New Kid? Let's get outta here."
"Ey! I want KFC to you son of a bitch! New Kid, get back here!" Raccoon yells.
Wonder Tweak:
☆ He's usually too focused on... tweaking out during battle to actually worry about healing teammates, but he's on it once the heat of the battle has died down. He'll check on professor Timmy and the others, his anxiety getting the better of him once hes no linger focused on his own survival. He'll patch you up, and try to calm you with the things he remembers Craig telling him (though he'd rather not talk about his Raccoon and Friends counterpart right now.)
"I-its gonna be okay, ah! Hold still, I'm gonna put on this band-aid, a-ah! Get a snack to heal, UNLESS YOU'RE ALLERGIC?!"
☆ He understands the importance of a support system, so whether you're an ex-member of Raccoon and Friends or just joined because of the causes message, he makes sure you have a space in the Freedom Pals base. He's got a corner where he goes to de-stress, and it's his personal space to fix himself up post-battle. He'll drag an extra bean-bag chair over for you, and offer to let you hold Stripe if he's got him for the night.
"Ack, here. He's great for after a big f-fight, he can sense i-inner turmoil!"
Toolshed:
☆ He's got an eye on you, always prepared to help, but... in all honesty, he just likes to watch you. Whether you're fierce and powerful or a little more of an assist type, he's always impressed by your ability to hold your own. He's gets a little more than flustered, but in the heat of battle he's actually less worried about complimenting you, hoping you'll just write it off as team members cheering each other on.
"Yeah! Sock it to them, New Kid! I'm here for you- we're here for you. The-the team is here for you, the Freedom Pals are, not me specifically-"
"Toolshed, keep your hormones under control during the battle, we must stay focused." Professor Timmy says, immediately causing Toolshed to turn green and move across the battlefield as far as possible from you.
☆ Please don't ignore him for any of the other guys, he's knows his powers are more tool-based and a little more generic, but he's not gonna feel very good about himself if you follow around Mysterion or heaven forbid, a member of Raccoon and Friends. He's still upset about Kyle not switching over. In order to prevent this, he makes sure you know what a good choice it was to be a member of this franchise instead. He'll show off there awesome base, and constantly mention how well the team did in battle, all in the hopes of keeping you around.
"I bet you never won a battle that quick when you were a Raccoon friend, huh? Not that you couldn't, I mean cause you had shitty teammates! Like... like Kite..."
Mysterion:
☆ He's technically a member of the Freedom Pals, but more often than not he works alone. He's usually described as mysterious, or creepy, even brutal, but the number one word you can use to describe him is 👏 PROTECTIVE 👏! None of the many bad guys that stalk the streets of south park are gonna get the jump on you, don't worry.
"Hey asshole!" A growly voice comes out from the shadows as a pounding sound hits the alley dumpster. "Get ready to feel the swift, ribbed fist of justice!"
☆ He's quick to depart post battle, not taking time to celebrate. He's got real justice to go serve, but... ever since you joined the team, he's been more hesitant to rush off. Still, doesn't mean he's great at figuring out how to socialize amongst the team. He just kind of... stands in the shade under the staircase that leads into the basement and broods. He kinda hopes you think it's hot.
"Oh, hey. Just thinking about giving those mob assholes what's coming to them..." He bites his lip, brows furrowed under his cowl as he tries to come up with a conversation piece that's not as harsh or violent as he uses with others. "I uh- did I ever tell you I have a sister? I think you'd like her..."

Hear me out on this,
HCS for Misa and L from Death Note(separately) with a detective s/o who's like Ranpo from Bougon Stray Dogs✋
★ - eeeee!!! Deathnote req!! (๑>ᴗ<๑)!!
☆ - Misa Amane & L Lawliet x Super Detective! Reader!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She loves you so much, but goodness (!!!) your smarts are going to be the death of her (literally and figuratively)
It’s a miracle how you haven’t found out she’s the Second Kira (you have, but you’re conflicted if you should rat out your girlfriend for the sake of justice) but she’s glad!
She is so confused about your addiction to snacks because ???? why do you need that much?
She’s an idol, so she has money to back you up — not all the time, but most of the time she lets you run free. She always reminds you that too many snacks aren’t healthy, but you need snacks to function, so it goes from one ear and out the other.
She tries her best not to let you and Light meet, as much as Kira needs you dead for interefering with his plans, she can’t bring herself to give you —her boyfriend who she loves so much despite your weird snack obsession— to the man who savd her life, no matter how grateful she is for that.
"Misa....!" You groan, lying down on a couch as you watch someone put makeup on her for her next photoshoot.
You've run out of cases that interest you, you're hungry, and you need something to do other than look at your perfect, amazing, charming, beautiful, pretty, stunning, breathtaking, gorgeous, captivating, alluring, attractive girlfriend.
You watch her in the mirror as the person places lipstick on her. Her light-brown eyes catch yours as she sends you a playful wink.
...Yeah, you lied, you could definitely keep staring at her more.
Your thoughts wander to the Kira case. You've solved it already, despite the dead ends and plot twists Ligh— Kira kept throwing at you, but you can't find it in yourself to turn it in to the police.
You're smart (obviously). If you turn in Light, Misa will become a prime suspect for the Second Kira, they'll arrest her under suspicion, and she'll eventually break or Light will manipulate her situation in a way so that they'll free him and keep Misa.
You still don't know how they kill, it's one of the few plot holes that bug you at night, but you're on the track to figure that out— you hope so at least.
Misa's face is above yours, a small smile on her face as she kisses your cheek. "I'll be done soon, then we can go out, okay?"
Her smile is so warm. Even after dating for so long, it still brings butterflies in your stomach. "Yeah," you breathe out, hands squeezing Misa's slightly. "Have fun, okay? I love you."
Misa giggles—you love her laugh, it's airy and tugs a smile on your face every single damn time you hear it— squeezing your arm as she makes her way out of the room. "I love you too!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Snack runs, snack runs, and did I already say snack runs?
The two top detectives are also lovers?? It sounds like the plot of a cheesy rom-com, but it is, in fact, the life of you and your beloved, sleep-deprived boyfriend!
You two work best when you're together. You don't even have to be touching (a lie) being in the same room working on cases is enough for the both of you.
Watari provides food (desserts and snacks, upon snacks, upon snacks) when you two are working on especially time-consuming cases.
Whenever you don't feel like working or the case you are working on doesn't interest you anymore, you cling to L's back, hide your face in the crook of his neck, and either sleep or give small feedback on the cases he works on.
The amount of money you two spend on food is not healthy, you're both very aware of that, but if you think you never gain weight so... who cares?
L has a hard time expressing his feelings, you're very aware of that, so you two have little signals whenever he wants something!
Pulling on your thumb whenever he wants a hug (he quickly discovered he adores physical touch), having Watari hand you cookies 'n creme pocky whenever he needed some form of intimate physical touch (kisses, hand holding [only when you two are alone], or particularly... engaging kisses.)
You were half-asleep, a chocolate wafer in your mouth as you lay on the floor, papers scattered around your body like faux snow.
You were bored, unbelievably so. Most of L's time was spent on the Kira case, in which he wouldn't let you participate for the sake of 'your safety' or something you didn't care enough to remember.
You think that was the first serious fight you and your boyfriend had in the three years you've been together. You didn't understand why he wouldn't let you do this, you two were great and reliable detectives.
His argument of "keeping you safe" didn't make any sense either, because if he dies because of this god-awful and annoying case, you'll end up joining the investigation anyway— by force if you have to.
The sound of a door creaking open slightly catches your attention. The pattern of bare feet coming closer to your figure as a hand gently pulls your thumb.
"I'm mad at you, you know?" You huff, eating the wafer and turning your body away from the black-haired man.
A small noise of frustration comes from behind you as L pulls on your thumb harder. "Hug."
"Go hug that Yagami boy since you like spending time with him so much." You're being petty, you know, but you can't help it.
You know L loves you, and you love him too but fuck if the Kira case situation didn't get under your skin, you'd be a liar.
A very bad one too.
The tugs get harder and there's less pause between each one. L is very persistent, you don't know why you thought he'd leave you alone after denying him the first time.
"[Name]. Hug."
A beat of silence passed as your free hand pushed past the papers of evidence for a case you were working on, trying to find a snack.
You felt a tug in your heart when L's grip slightly faltered. With a sigh, you hastily rolled over. Encasing him in your arms and rolling back the other way, the two of you finally look at one another eye to eye.
"Happy now?" You ask in feigning annoyance as you watch your boyfriend's lips slowly curl into a smile, a small dust of red tinting his pale skin.
"Very."
Sighing dramatically, you let him stay in the crook of your neck, legs intertwined as the sleep slowly falls over your body.
You can be mad at him another time.

Riddle "don't twiddle your fingers" Rosehearts
The clacking of chalk against the blackboard filled the room alongside Professors Triens' monotone voice as he covered topics of history. Yuu sat with their hands in their lap as they read along in the textbook. Their ever fidgeting hands soon caught the attention of their ever diligent partner, Riddle Rosehearts.
"My Rose, don't twiddle your fingers. You should be taking your notes." His voice was a hushed whisper as he nudged his hand against theirs. "If you're nervous, we can review my notes together over tea." His offer was as soft as his smile before he quickly looked back at the professor who was now looking at the pair.
The red head adjusted himself to resume his notes. While he awaited Yuus’ response, he began to plan out what tea and snacks he should provide for their enviable study sessions for the week. It was their time together. At least 2 hours he could carve out of his schedule to be with his partner. He could help them in the way he knew the best while they could still enjoy one another's company.
His cheeks went a soft pink as he thought about the noticeable uptick in their partners grades as well as his own. It was impressive to see how quickly yuu had adjusted, not to mention how resilient they were to continue to study material so different then their homeland. And yet they still came to every study session with a smile. Their time full of laughter.
Riddle took a peek over to Yuu, his eyes widened a little to see a small note written on the top of their notebook.
"Are we meeting at your dorm at 5, as usual?"
The note taker gave him a cheeky grin before he rolled his eyes and gave a soft nod. His eyes went to Professor trein before he took out a pink notepad.
" As long as that still suits your schedule, then yes. I'll have tea and snacks prepared.*"
Yuu couldn't help the soft snicker they gave as The Riddle Rosehearts just wrote them a note in class. Oh how the one harsh queen has softened. Yuus' hands went back to their lap as they looked back at the textbook, slowly scanning along to find the part that was being read out loud. However, their mine began to wander. And they're hands began to fidget again. Not because they were on info overload, but because now they just wanted the classes to be over so they could just go hang out with Riddle. Yeah, studying was cool, but they were more motivated to bask in the quiet affections of the Queen of hearts.
The magicless student flinched as they looked down to see riddles black gloves over theirs. "If you can't keep still, then I'll help you." He fake huffed with a soft blush over his cheeks. He didn't want to admit it was distracting to see their hands constantly moving. But now he was even more distracted by his own actions as his heart thrummed in his ears. Oh, why can't the bell just ring already?

Are you there L.T.?
Simon "Ghost" Riley x Student!Reader
(Finals are coming up and I think nothing more than fluffy Ghost would help more than anything.)
Tumblr media
(Fluffy fluff from the big man himself)
My eyes crack open and I stare up at my ceiling. Daylight floods in through my windows illuminating the room. I hear the soft hum of my heater trying to keep my apartment warm in contrast to the cold wind bustling outside.
I sit up on my elbows and blink bleary-eyed, scanning the room. It feels like I hadn't slept at all. I just wanted to take a nap. I haven't been sleeping well at night because it's exam week and I'm beyond stressed. I nibble my nail as the anxiety sits in and I reach for my phone. I pray that more time as past since I laid down for a nap.
The cushions under my legs sink in as I lean forward. I pick up my phone and tap the screen. I blink a few times before registering that I had only been asleep 10 minutes.
With a groan I toss my phone to the side and put my face in my hands. I squeeze my scalp, my fingers closing around strands of my hair and I breathe shakily.
I can't believe how much the stress is getting me. I will myself not to cry and an idea pops into my head. Maybe there's someone who could provide moral support. I look at my phone a moment before picking it up. I tap on a familiar app and scroll through. He may not even be on leave. He may be deployed somewhere. He almost might not care to talk his old teammate off the edge during something as trivial as exams.
But he was always a good guy. Someone I looked up too who provided comfort when I needed it. Worth a shot. Who is it? My old Lieutenant. Simon "Ghost" Riley.
I tap on his contact and send a message.
LT?
I wait a few moments aching for a reply before I realize it probably won't come. I get up and with a pop of my joints I head to my shower.
Behind the bathroom door, I open a closet and pull out a fluffy towel. I set it on the counter before picking through my closet for a change of clothes. I turn the knobs in my shower. A few squeaks and the water flows through the shower head. The water was cold at first, the temperature picking up a few minutes later. I watch the steam rise and I undress getting under the spray.
I spend a good amount of time decompressing and allowing the water to soothe my body. I had just lathered myself up with soap when I hear a ping from my phone. Almost breaking my neck jumping out of the shower, I haphazardly dry my hands off before picking up my phone and tapping the screen.
I smile seeing the ghost icon. Suds slide their way down my body but I pay no mind as I open the text
(Y/N).
Always a man of a few words.
Long time no see. Are you in the area by chance?
I am for now. What's on your mind?
I'm struggling with finals and the stress is getting to me. Can't sleep, any ideas?
You've been on countless missions with 141 and finals got your nerves going?
I freeze and sheepishly reply.
Yeah.....
I had left the military after my contract ended. I kept close contact with the other members. I'm particularly close with Soap. Price was always fatherly and Ghost, I leaned on him a lot inside and outside the military.
Want me to come by?
I smile and type out my response before I finish my shower.
I'd like that it'd be nice to catch up!
Once I finish cleaning, I towel off and get dressed. It'll take Ghost about half an hour to get to my apartment so I settle on making a snack as I wait for him.
A knock at my door has me rushing to open it. Standing there is Ghost. I'll be honest it took me a bit to get used to his face without the mask.
"LT!" I exclaim a little to enthusiastic.
He nods at me with a ghost (see what I did there?) of a smile.
"(Y/N)"
I smile and open my arms. He awkwardly does the same and I'm just happy he's indulging me. I lay against his chest and give him a squeeze. His smile subconsciously gets bigger and he holds me back.
I let him into my apartment and he looks around.
"So finals gettin ya frazzled?"
"Yeah.....I thought after the military nothing would stress me out but this....civilian life is worse."
"Ain't that the fuckin truth."
"I just can't wrap my head around this." I gesture to my textbook. "How the hell am I supposed to know the answer to....this?"
I show him a question in my book. His eyes barely scan it before he gives me an answer. I deadpan before looking it up.
"You did not fucking know that." He chuckles and leans towards me.
"Give me another." He says with a cocky grind. We go back and forth and he irritatingly gets ALL OF THEM. He even caught on when I was bullshitting and flicked me in the forehead.
"Ow!" I yelp
"Don't act like a brat jus because yer strugglin." He says simply. I grumble and rub my head as he laughs.
"Alright I'll help ya siddown." He says.
"No LT I can't take another second if studying."
"I said sit." I blush and comply sitting next to him as he picks up my book. I groan and he shoots me a look.
He goes back and forth with me explaining problems and helping me figure them out. Towards the end I finally start to get the hang of it. I answer the last question, the one that gave me the most trouble.
"Are you sure?" His unreadable eyes pierce me and I stress. I squeeze my hands and look at him.
"I'm sure." He looks at me blankly and I start to sweat.
"That's right." He says. I breathe a sigh of relief and fall against my cushions.
"Thank GOD!" Ghost chuckles at my enthusiasm.
"Atta girl I knew ya could do it." He says and I flush.
"Thanks LT you always did make things easier on me."
"Ah that was all you love. Jus needed a little help is all." He says and I blush.
He stands up, his massive frame towering over me and stretches.
"Well let me take ya out and we can get some dinner."
"Really?"
"Sure let's go. Don't tell Johnny, damn bastard always tryin to get a free meal out o me."
I giggle at the mention of Soap and I grab my jacket and gloves go layer up. I pull my boots on and brave the cold. I look at him and in confirmation. He opens my door and let's me out shutting it behind us. I lock my door and we start walking down the street.
We banter for a few minutes catching up on what the rest of the crew is doing. A snowflake melts on my neck and I shiver. Without a word Ghost takes off his scarf and wraps it around my neck. His hands brushing my hair and shoulders. Thank God the cold made my cheeks rosy already. We get to a bar and he opens the door for me. I stamp my feet out and we sit at the bar.
"What'll ya have?" He asks me. I give him my drink order and he orders for me. I sit next to him happily.
"When's your exam?" He asks me. I sigh.
"Tomorrow." I say. He nods.
"You'll be jus fine love." He gives me one of his rare Ghost smiles. We order food and keep talking about the good old days and how things are now. I realize how homesick I've been for the 141. I'm stuffing a French fry in my mouth when I hear a loud voice.
"Blood 'ell." Ghost sighs and I smile knowing what's got his nerves. I swivel in my chair and look at beautiful blue eyes. The Scotsman smiles at me.
"Soap!" I exclaim and hop off my chair. I jump up and hug him and he holds me back.
"Hey there lass. How ya been?" He asks me and I nuzzle his chest.
"Good Soap! I missed you!" He smiles and picks me up, a deep laugh rumbling from his chest.
"I missed ya too lass. What're you and the missus doin ere?"
I giggle
"He was helping me study for my exam tomorrow." Soap feigns hurt and looks at me.
"Oi why didn ya ask me fer help?. Instead ya ask our tightass oer there?" He says. I laugh and Ghost pipes up.
"Johnny you're a bloody sod." He says. Soap smiles at him and sits down.
"I am not go on quiz me. I'll be I get more right then you."
After a humbling experience, Soap settles to joking around with us and sharing my food. We watch the rugby game on the television and go back and forth talking. I sit happily between the two men and feel content being around two familiar people.
"Thank you guys. This has really helped."
"Always lassie."
"Anything for ya love."
Later on that night they walk me home. I walk in between them and the follow me all the way to my door. I undo the scarf Ghost gave me and hand it to him. Soap snatches it and wraps it stupidly around his head. Ghost shoots him a death glare but doesn't bother taking it back. Soap smiles cheerily at him.
He opens his arms to me and I hug the Scotsman tightly.
"Goodnight Soap. Thanks for being here."
"Always lass, treasure seein ya." He kisses my hand and I blush. I turn to Ghost. He carefully gives me a hug and Soap smirks at him.
"G'night love. Good luck on your exam t'morrow. You'll be jus fine."
I smile and let him go.
"Thanks LT."
They let me go inside and I crawl under my warm covers. I lay sleepily against my pillows and relax. I feel more content than I had in a while and I gently sleep.
The next morning I stand in front of my classroom. I grip the straps to my backpack tightly and shift from foot to foot. I try and calm my nerves. I was never the best test taker. I go to take a step when my phone goes off a bunch of times. Vibrations felt through my pocket as I get bombarded with messages. Wondering what the hell is up I open my screen and my heart melts. It's a group chat from the 141.
(Soap): Oi. Everyone wish (Y/N) good luck on her exam today. Not that the lass has to worry her pretty little head
(Price): Good luck love. You were an amazing soldier, you got this.
(Price): Get back to work Soap.
(Gaz): Ayeooo (Y/N) has finals? Knock em dead sweetheart!!! 🫶
(Konig): Gut luck Liebling
(Keegan): Showtime (Y/N) we got your back
(Roach): Good luck!
(Ghost): Good luck soldier.
I read the messages happily soon the chat turning on Soap and instead berating him. I giggle.
(Y/N): Thank you guys! I'll do you proud.
(Keegan): We know you will sweetheart. Soap was that you I saw walk by in that stupid scarf?
(Soap): Why yes it was
(Ghost): it's not stupid
(Price): I didn't know we were all jerkin off today. Let the girl take her test and get the fuck back to work.
(Soap): Aye sir
(Ghost): Roger
(Keegan): On it Capn
(Konig): I will get back to it
(Roach): I wasn't a part of this.
I laugh at the messages as they cease. My phone vibrates one more time and it's a separate message from Ghost.
(Ghost): Stop stressing. You've always been a bad test taker but you're more than capable. Kick ass today.
(Ghost): I'm proud of you
My heart melts at his words and I beam. He was always a man of few words but this meant the world. I take a breath and head into my class to take the final. My mood and confidence boosted knowing I have a whole army behind me.
~~~~~
(Soap): Wow I like it a lot!
(Wolf): Thanks me too!
(Soap): I like how you shamlessly added me in there.
(Wolf): *blushing* Soap you're basically my husband at this point of course I'm going to.
(Soap): *Rolls eyes* Shameless
(Ghost): You procrastinated studying to WRITE about studying?
(Wolf): Hell yeah I did. And it worked.
"Y' see, Jake, a lot o' people in this department ain't exactly friendly to others," Sy tells him. "In fact, it can be difficult for me an' Pine to assign anyone to tickets that require interacting with others."
Jake nods, a little nervously. "IT generally doesn't draw the most charismatic people."
"Which is a damn shame because, more and more, it requires some decent people skills," Sy agrees. "That's why Pine an' I were thinking of giving you a promotion." Jake's eyes go wide with shock. "The way things are right now, we assign tickets kinda randomly. We're interested in putting you in charge of the tickets. You'd be takin' on a lot more of the people focused work, the level 1 support, and the others'd be pickin' up more of your programming work. But since we all know workin' with people can be a pain, Pine's made sure to negotiate some more money into our budget for you. If you want the job."
"By 'in charge of tickets' do you mean I'd be taking them all on?"
"No, no, no," Sy assures. "Just that you'd be making them your priority. And you'd be assigning the level 2 and 3 support tickets around the department as you see fit."
"Won't that cut into your work?"
Syverson laughs at that. "Given how much o' my day is puttin' out fires caused by one of ours bein' rude to others in the building, yeah. But that just gives me more time for actually managing y'all, keepin' us up-to-date on projects, security measures and other stuff."
Jake thinks for a moment. "Does this mean I'll also be responsible for Lloyd's complaints about not getting Maestro assigned to his tickets?"
"He has eased up on that," Sy counters. "But yes."
"But this promotion gives me the authority to handle him, right?"
"That's correct."
Jake nods. "I'm in. Thanks so much for this!"
It had taken forever to get the twins to sleep for their afternoon naps. Leia couldn't stop fidgeting, at least until you gave her the Charmander stuffie to hold as you rocked them. But then Luke wanted his Bulbasaur and you ended up with overfull arms. Some days you're surprised your own biceps aren't as big as Jake's!
Jake's performance review was today and you wanted to make sure to cook up his favorite foods. You'd already sent some of his favorite snacks to work with him. You chuckle thinking about how quickly he can down a bottle of Mountain Dew. The bag of gummy worms to go with the meatball sub were, hopefully, a nice surprise for him. Generally all the sweets in the apartment were homemade but you know how much of a comfort gummy worms can be for him.
And after all Jake has done for you, for the twins, how could not comfort him? Be there for him? Jake never once talked down to you. Never made you feel like your hobbies or interests were a waste of time. He always made sure you felt loved and appreciated. You'd been together for so many years but you still giggle like a teenager whenever you think of him. And you know he does the same. Heck, you giggle as you think of him blushing pink and smiling as he thinks about you.
He's been working so hard to make sure you and the twins were provided for. The budget was sometimes tight but Jake made enough and your commissions were a good supplement. It just made sense for your little family to have a stay-at-home parent. Childcare costs for twins could be rough. But you got more creative with recipes, clothing, toys; your families were happy to help with a lot of the baby supplies; all of it resulting in all of you being able to live a nice, modest but incredibly happy life.
As the twins nap you get to work on the 5-cheese mac you know Jake loves. You're positive his performance review will go well, but it doesn't hurt to have a comfort food ready for him when he gets home.
Tumblr media
Jake was practically bursting with excitement when he came home. As soon as he walked through the door the twins held out their hands, smiling, "Dada! Dada!" It always made his heart melt that they looked forward to his coming home. He picked them both up and spun, making them squeal with laughter. He takes a deep breath and knows what you're cooking up for dinner, making him smile even more. He's almost tearing up from how loved he feels.
"Dinner's just about ready," you call from the kitchen.
Jake looks to Luke and Leia, "you ready for dinner? Smells like Mama cooked up some really good food for us!" They both start chattering and laughing as Jake dances them over to their highchairs and gets them settled in. He joins you in the kitchen to help you carry things out and greets you with a big kiss.
"I take it the review went well?"
He starts visibly shaking with excitement, "so well! Let's get dinner started and I'll tell you!"
"Tease!" you smile at him as the two of you take things out to the table, making him laugh. Seeing him laugh causes the twins to renew their laughing and your heart warms all the more for it.
You and Jake alternate dishing out the food for yourselves and the twins. Even though it's certainly cooled down, Luke still holds out his spoon of mac and cheese for you to blow on it. Meanwhile Jake is helping to portion control Leia's ketchup for her chicken nuggets. Both of you are certain she'd drink the ketchup if left unattended so you've developed a system of adding a little dollop to each one as she's eating. Sometimes Jake thinks she views it as a game to play and he hopes she never grows out of it.
After the twins are sated a bit, you and Jake can finally dig in to your own plates. Jake gives all the appreciative moans he knows make you smile. It helps that your cooking is genuinely so damn delicious.
"Now will you finally tell me how the review went?"
"I'm getting a promotion!"
You squeal with happiness, causing a chain reaction with the twins. "A promotion! That's so wonderful! So well deserved!"
Jake blushes, "thank you, Sunshine. And it even comes with a pay raise! I think, after a few months, we can start looking at getting a bigger place!"
"Oh, Jakey! That's so wonderful! I really feel like we should celebrate!"
"I can think of a few ways to celebrate," Jake says, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Definitely," you confirm with a giggle as heat rushes to your face. "I'm also thinking we should do a gaming night."
Jake's eyes go wide, "yes, please! Oh that would be so amazing! Not as amazing as you, but still amazing. God I love you so much, Sunshine! You're the best thing to ever happen to me---"
"I feel the same about you, Jakey," you say softly.
Offense & Defense - (Pete "Maverick" Mitchell x Reader)
[Part Two of the Agents of Chaos series]
Tumblr media
A beach day meant to be spent on team bonding has Maverick hot under the collar. Sure, you're his soulmate, but how the hell is he supposed to compete with Jake "Hangman" Serensin, the much younger (than him) pilot who seems to have a soft spot for you? Or, the chapter where Maverick nearly loses you for good. Warnings: Shirtless, Jealous Maverick (which is, let's be honest, is downright deadly) mentions of a bodily injury (to the reader) Disclaimer: Some of these lines (the ones marked with an asterisk) are copied directly from the movie, but I do not claim them as my own! Tumblr media
The sun is beating down on you when you step around the Hard Deck. The sand is hot to the touch, but the ocean looks cool and inviting. It's a beautiful, sunny day, and it lifts your spirits a little. It had been a rough and stressful few days.
You briefly wonder where Maverick is, looking around the beach to see if you can spot him. You haven't seen him outside of Top Gun since the night he walked away from you. You're just about to start walking further down the beach to see if you can find him when your tattoo constricts tightly around your wrist, alerting you to his presence.
He's standing not even a foot away when you turn around. His aviators are perched on his perfect face, his expression completely unreadable. He's wearing a worn black t-shirt and dark blue jeans rolled up, and he looks good. Really good.
"Hey." He finally offers. It's the most he's said directly to you in the days after you'd first met. The fact that he's been ignoring you for over a week has a hollow feeling growing in your chest, and you merely nod in greeting.
You squeeze your eyes shut for a moment before you huff out an exasperated sound and turn away from him. It's like he's trying to pretend that nothing has ever happened between the two of you, and it hurts. He'd turned his back on your connection, running away from what could be.
"Sweetheart, please." A shiver wracked down your spine at the sound of his voice, pleading with you. You want to turn around, you want to see his eyes, and you want more than anything to love him. But he doesn't want you; he's made that perfectly clear. You weren't good enough.
"Hey, now wait, don't-"
The sound of your friends startles you, but you don't turn around. You just set up your beach chair and wait for them to settle in, too. You can hear Josh all the way in the parking lot bickering with Phoenix over something you don't quite catch.
You'd told Josh about your string appearing a few days ago, right after Maverick had left you standing on the front porch of your little bungalow. He'd fallen silent, completely in shock, but had told you that he'd keep it to himself. You weren't ready for word to get out about your soulmate, especially not wanting to explain that he was completely rejecting the bond.
Hangman reaches you first; his green eyes warm when he smiles down at you. "Hey there, pretty girl. You come here often?"
A strangled sound reaches your ears, and you turn your head to see Maverick gulping down water while Phoenix pats him on the back. He sees you watching him and waves you off. "Went down the wrong pipe; I'm good."
Bob arrives next, surrounded by Payback and Fanboy, with Rooster trailing behind him. You watch as Bob strolls over and bumps Phoenix with his shoulder to alert her to his presence. It was nice to see them getting along; most of you had gotten pretty close in the last few days.
"Alright." Maverick's voice rang out, and everyone turned to face him. "Today, we're gonna play a little game I like to call Dogfight Football. Offense and defense at the same time. Two footballs, two teams, each trying to score as many touchdowns as possible."
The team breaks out into excited chatter, already arguing over who would be on whose team for the game. You briefly wonder why he's got you guys playing games when you only have so much time to train before the mission.
Maverick must've heard your thoughts because you suddenly felt his presence in your head again. He wasn't looking at you, but he was there all the same. It felt like his hands were cupping your face, his thumb smoothing along your cheekbone, just like he had the first night.
"Trust me, you guys need this. It'll be fun, I promise."
His honeyed voice soothes the frayed nerves that have made themselves known over the last few days. You practically purr at the sound of him in your head, but you push that away as quickly as it came on.
"Whatever you say, Captain Mitchell." You respond, and you feel him flinch at the use of his official title. You slam the mental block down quickly, and he flinches again, harder this time. Only you and Hangman seem to notice the captain's strange behavior.
"You good?" Jake's voice breaks through the noise as he sidles up beside you. He throws an arm around your shoulders as he smirks. "You're looking a little jumpy there. Afraid we're gonna run you into the ground, old man?"
You can't hear him, but you can feel him. Maverick is seething, his jaw tight, while he stares at Jake through his aviators. If looks could truly kill, Hangman would've been gone and buried by now. You can't tell if you're more worried about Jake or aroused by the sight of Maverick; he's really hot when he's angry. You're not sure what he's more pissed about—the way Jake is talking to you or the way he's got an arm wrapped around you.
"We'll see." Maverick finally speaks, with a sharp bite to his voice when he answers. He's calmer now, at least, and you push your presence into his mind. Experimentally, you whisper in his head, your voice soothing.
"Relax. This is supposed to be fun, remember? Don't let him get to you."
He visibly relaxes and shoots you a grateful, beautifully crooked smile.
You were prepared for the game, but you really weren't prepared for a very sweaty, very shirtless Pete Mitchell. He'd shed his shirt halfway through the game, leaving his tanned skin glistening in the sun. Your breath had left your lungs immediately, and you were so focused on how gorgeous he was that you didn't see Fanboy running full speed in your direction.
Hangman sees it all go down and swoops in as quickly as he can. He's fast on his feet and has you up in his arms just a split second before Fanboy was about to crash into you. You're breathless, looking up into those impossibly green eyes with a dazed look on your face.
"Hey, pretty girl." He greets you, a smile flashing over his lips as he adjusts you in his arms. Yours are slung around his neck, your legs wrapped around his waist, and you wonder what it would be like to just lean in and kiss Jake Seresin. At least he acted like he wanted you, even if he was a little bit of a player. (Or, so the rumors said.)
"Hey." You answer, one hand gliding gently through the soft, golden hair at the nape of his neck. "Thanks for saving me back there; I thought for sure I was gonna be a goner. Fanboy is heavier than he looks."
That draws a laugh out of him, and you're a little too into the way the sunlight gleams off of his golden hair and tanned skin. "You got it, doll." And then he's setting you down gently on the sand, but he doesn't move away.
"Seriously?"
You jolt, and Hangman looks at you with disappointment in his eyes when he sees the flash of your soulmate string against your skin. "Ah, shit. Did I overstep?"
"Tell him to let go of you. Please."
His voice is a low growl in your head. You're not sure where Maverick even is, but you're sure he's somewhere behind you. You can feel his eyes boring into your skin as you look up at Jake, your face burning with embarrassment. "I'm not sure why he's even mad; he's made it clear he doesn't want to be with me."
"Chaos."
"It's Maverick, isn't it?" He murmurs, still looking down at you with a look of disappointment. "He's giving me a look that's actually a little terrifying right now." He admits, and his hands slip off of your skin and into the pockets of his swim shorts.
You sigh. "Yeah, it is. Just don't tell anyone, okay? He already made it perfectly clear that I'm not what he wants, so it doesn't matter, anyway." You can hear the sadness in your own voice, and Jake just sighs.
"I'll keep your secret. Scout's honor. And he'll come around, pretty girl." He sets a hand on your shoulder, yanking you into him so he can give you a hug. "But if he doesn't, you're totally welcome to give me a call anytime."
You hear Maverick's frustrated growl in your head again, but this time you just shut him out.
Tumblr media
By the next day, you're still angry with Maverick. This game of hot and cold with him is getting old, quickly. You couldn't even hang out with Jake without your soulmate (the one who was constantly saying he didn't want a relationship with you!) getting jealous and getting all growl-y in your ear.
Things are tense; no one has yet to complete the mission. Either Rooster was going too slow and holding you up, or Hangman was going too fast and fucking up the rest of his teammates. You were ready to strangle both of them, even if you loved them both.
"Agent, do you have a lock on the target?"
"Negative, this laser is bugging the fuck out. I've got dead-eye."
You curse out loud, and then your soulmate, the one who has done nothing but piss you off for two days, 'shoots' you down. The fucker even tells you across the radio that you're dead.
*"Coyote, we're out. Maverick got us." You tell him, not even trying to hide how utterly annoyed you are at the captain. Sure, he's just training you to make sure you cover all possibilities, but still.
*"That's a fail, Coyote. Return to base." Maverick repeats, but Coyote's plane is rising even further into the sky. He's not saying anything in the comms and you're getting a little worried now.
*"Coyote? Level wings." Maverick orders over the comms, a panicked edge creeping into his voice. You're watching with bated breath as Coyote's plane starts to nose dive, and then he's free falling through the air.
"Mav, he's in G-Lock. You gotta get tone on him!" Your heartbeat is slamming against your chest, watching your friend's plane start to plummet straight toward the Earth. You knew if he didn't wake up, he was going to die as you watched, helpless.
Maverick's plane goes screaming towards him and you can hear him yelling Coyote's call sign over the comms. After what seems like a lifetime, at the last possible second, Coyote's plane levels out and he starts climbing back into the sky. You can't help but laugh, relieved to see that your friend was alright.
"I'm alright, I'm good." You can hear Coyote now, and you breathe out a long sigh of relief. That had been way too close for comfort, and your heart was still hammering in your chest.
"Good job, Mav." Your plane levels out next to his, giving him a thumbs up so he can see it.
"You did good, Chaos. The tone idea was brilliant."
There's maybe a moment more of calm before the next round of chaos begins.
"Bird strike!"
*"Shit, Chaos. Climb!" The left engine is out, and you pull hard on your stick to climb higher into the sky. Agent's voice is panicked when he follows up with, "Left engine is on fire!"
*"Throttling back. Shutting off fuel. Extinguishing fire." You rattle off what you're doing, flipping switches and pushing buttons on autopilot. This is what you've trained for, you tell yourself. Stay calm, and everything will be fine.
*"We’re losing the right engine." Agent's sounding a little more panicked, and you take a deep breath.
*"It’s still spinning. I’m gonna try to restart it." You flip the APU switch and push the right throttle forward. "APU on. Throttle up. Shit, nothing's happening." Okay, now you're starting to panic. It would really fucking suck if you had to bail out.
*"The right engine is out!" Agent says, and yeah, he's full on panicking now. "Chaos, I think this is it; I've got every warning light lit up back here."
*"We lost hydraulics; I can't control it!" The stick is useless in your hands, and you're starting to lose complete control. You're spinning out, and yeah, this is really not good.
*"Eject! Eject!" Maverick is practically screaming over the radio, "Chaos, Agent, eject now!"
You grab the handle and pull, and you watch as the canopy flies off your plane backwards. You're launched into the air, and there's only a split second before you see Agent do the same.
It's almost peaceful, floating down with a parachute. But then the plane crashes into the mountainside and something metallic shoots toward you, and the last thing you remember is thinking, "Ow, that hurt."
Tumblr media
The next time you wake up, you know you're in a hospital. The room is stark white; there's a heart monitor next to you and an IV attached to your arm. By the look of the clock on the wall, you know it's well past midnight. You wonder if Agent is here too, and if he managed to land okay.
The next thing you notice is the feeling of someone holding your hand. You turn your head, and you are absolutely flabbergasted to find Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, asleep in a chair that's been pulled up to your bedside, holding your hand.
You shift slightly, moving towards him, and you notice that his normally tan face looks pale. He looks like he hasn't slept in days, and his face looks swollen, like he's been crying. "Maverick?"
He twitches, but his eyes stay closed and his hand stays wrapped around yours. One more urgent whisper of his name, and those intense blue eyes of his slam open, and he looks at you like he's seen a ghost. "Oh, thank God." He leans forward, pressing his cheek against your joined hands, and breathes out a sigh of relief.
"What's going on?" Not that you mind that he's touching you or even that he's here, but you're beyond confused.
"Bird strike, you had to eject." He looks back at you, his other hand coming out to cup your hand in both of his. "Shrapnel came flying from your plane and hit you as you were coming down. Smacked you right in the chest. You were bleeding out pretty badly when they found you; you had landed hard and hit your head, too."
"Oh." You frown, reaching up with your free hand to touch the edges of the bandages on your chest. Now that he mentions it, it's throbbing uncomfortably. "What about Josh? Is he okay? How long was I out?"
"Agent is fine; he was treated for some light scrapes and bruising and released the next day. You've been asleep for three days. I've, uh, been here every night with you." He admits, and his eyes are still trained on your face. It's almost like he can't believe that you're awake and that you're okay.
"Shit, I've missed that much?" You struggle to sit up, but Maverick stands and gently pushes you back down onto the hospital bed. "Mav, c'mon, I gotta get out of here."
"No, you don't. Simpson has already released you from the mission." He tells you quietly, and your throat constricts. A chance of a lifetime mission, and you were completely out of commission. "I'm sorry, sweetheart, but you were hurt. You need to rest and heal."
You let out a wounded sound, angry at yourself for being in this position. Your plane was gone; you'd put Agent in danger, and now you were going to miss out on this special assignment. Things couldn't possibly get any worse than they are right now.
"Why are you even here?" That's the question that's nagging at you the most, and in your still-exhausted mind, you deserve an answer. "I didn't know you cared that much."
He looks taken aback, but his hands refuse to let go of yours. His eyes are trained on your face, and to your amazement, they're slowly filling up with tears. His lower lip was swollen from being constantly worried between his teeth, and in this moment, he looks almost delicate. Like he's about to break.
"I almost lost you," he whispers, and he sounds devastated. "I haven't even given us a fighting chance, and I almost lost you."
You turn as much as you can, staring at his face with wide eyes. The strongest man you'd ever met was breaking apart before your eyes, and you almost couldn't believe it. Did he really care that much?
"Of course I do." He swipes a hand at his eyes, catching the tears that had started to slip down his face. "I've never not cared. I'm just... Sweetheart, I'm no good at this. I've never been able to keep down a relationship; I have no kids of my own, and my only godson hates me."
You shift in your bed, moving as much to the side as you can before you pat the space beside you. "Lie down, Mav. You're exhausted; how long has it been since you slept?"
He looks like he's not going to do it for a split second, and then he seems to change his mind. He kicks off his boots and carefully climbs in, sliding his arm under you so you can lie on his chest. You're careful not to jostle yourself as you settle down.
"I care about you too, Mav." You tell him, your hand gently drawing patterns over his chest. "I knew the moment I first saw you that you would be everything to me, you know? And you denying us just... well, it hurt. I guess that's why I was letting Jake hit on me at the beach."
He makes a sound in his chest, and you can't help the exhausted giggle that slips out. "Easy, Pete. He's a great friend, and it won't happen again. Not unless you let me go for good."
"I won't." He answers without hesitation, and you tip your head back so you can see his face better. "I think this week has taught me that I care more about you than I thought. When I'm not training everyone, I'm here. I caused quite a stir the other night when they tried to get me to leave. Iceman had to call and make sure I got special clearance to stay with you at night."
Your heart thumps in your chest. "Hey, Pete?"
"Yeah?" He peeks down at you, his dark eyes studying you with that same intensity that always took your breath away.
"I really like you. And when I can get up and brush my teeth, I'm going to kiss you." Maybe it's the exhaustion you're feeling that's making you so bold, or maybe you're just drunk on the overwhelming affection you feel for him. "Because I really, really want to kiss you."
He stares at you for a solid moment, and then he carefully shuffles you so that he can lean down and press a sweet kiss to your forehead. And then he leaves one on your nose, and both of your cheeks. His lips graze yours, so softly that you can barely feel it. Regardless, your body lights up for him, and you meet his kiss with sweet affection.
"Get some sleep, sweetheart." He murmurs, brushing one last kiss against your lips. "I'll probably be gone when you wake up, but I'll be back before nightfall. I promise."
When you wake up the next morning, your bed is still warm from his body heat, and he's left a flower and a note for you where he'd been sleeping.
I'll be back soon. Don't miss me too much.
Love,
Mav.
Hello!!! AAA okokok hear me out,
some wholesome and protective Marco X reader where the reader gets distracted and cuts her finger cooking.
With the prompts:
42- “Darling I love you and all, but please step out of the kitchen.”
46- “You’re hurt. Please just let heal it.”
Your writing is amazing <3!!!
A/N: RAINNNNNN AAAAA I am being dragged down into the Marco trenches because of you I swear thank you so much for requesting I really had a lot of fun with this!! <3<3 The prompts came from here!! Pairing: Marco X Reader CW: Mentions of slicing a finger and stitches. WC: 733 In the middle of the night, you found yourself sneaking into the kitchen, a craving compelling you to whip up a midnight snack. The soft glow of the kitchen lights encompassed the room as you gathered ingredients.
The calmness you were experiencing was shattered by an unexpected noise coming from beyond the kitchen walls. Startled, you turned your attention away for a moment, a misstep that led to the knife in your hand slipping. You softly gasped as the blade met flesh, and a searing pain shot through your finger. The knife fell from your grasp, clattering against the kitchen tiles.
Luckily, the source of the noise turned out to be none other than Marco. His concerned gaze fixed on you as he approached.
"Whoa, hey, what happened?" he asked, his voice reassuring as he closed the distance between you two.
Wincing, you grasped your injured hand, blood welling up from the cut. "I was just making a snack, and I... I cut myself," you explained, your voice laced with pain.
Marco's gentle touch cradled your injured hand, concern etched across his features as he inspected the cut. He empathetically grimaced as his experienced eyes analyzed the wound.
"This is quite the cut you've gotten yourself," he says. Leaning in, he examines the wound more closely. "Hmm, yeah, it's pretty deep. Come on, let's get out of here so I can get you stitched up."
You quickly try to dismiss his concerns. "No, it's fine, really! I can just finish this up here, and I'll be back to bed soon," you insist, attempting to downplay the severity of the injury.
A sigh escapes Marco, disappointment clouding his gaze as he insists, "Darling, I love you and all, but please step out of the kitchen."
"If you loved me, you'd tell me this is just a scratch and let me be," you retort.
However, Marco's expression remains flat, his gaze unwavering. After a brief, silent standoff, you finally back down. "Okay, okay, fine," you concede, stepping out of the kitchen with Marco in tow behind you.
After successfully coaxing you out of the kitchen, Marco leads you to a more comfortable spot to tend to your injury. He settles you down on a chair as he retrieves a first aid kit.
"This is really unnecessary, Marco," you insist, holding onto your stubbornness. "Just some gauze will do. I don't need stitches."
He glances at you, an amusement in his eyes as he responds, "I've seen my fair share of wounds. Trust me, this needs stitches."
You scoff, folding your arms in defiance. "It's just a little cut. Gauze will be fine. No need to make a big deal out of it."
Marco, however, remains unfazed by your attempts to downplay the situation. "You're hurt. Please just let me heal it," he insists, a gentle insistence  present in your voice. He approaches you with a sterile needle and thread, ready to mend the wound with the care only a skilled doctor and a loving partner can provide.
As Marco preps the needle and thread, you persist in your attempts to avoid the inevitable. "Marco, seriously, this is overkill. I've had worse, trust me," you argue, trying to reason with him.
He glances up, meeting your gaze with a soft smile. "I know you're tough, but that doesn't mean you have to endure unnecessary pain. Let me take care of you."
You roll your eyes, though a small grin betrays your annoyance. "You just like playing doctor, don't you?"
Marco chuckles, "Maybe I do."
His words soften your resistance, but you still play the stubborn card. "I'm telling you, I've survived worse without stitches."
He raises an eyebrow, "Survived, yes. But you're not just anyone. You're my person, and I want you in one piece."
You concede with a deep sigh. "Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you when you find out it was unnecessary."
His laughter fills the room. "I'll take that risk," He says as he starts to stitch up your wound. He lovingly lectures you about not using knives in the middle of the night, all while his skilled hands patches you up. Deep down inside, though, the both of you know that you're probably going to be in this position once more in due time, and yet he will gladly be there for you to patch up every bump and bruise.
Unexpected Charms: Flirting with Oikawa
Tumblr media
Y/N sat on the couch with her friend Hana, when her phone dinged. Hana had given Oikawa her number and now he was texting her non-stop. Y/N checked her phone and let out a deep sigh. Hana, already knowing who it was, asked, "What's it say?"
Y/N showed her the phone. Oikawa had sent: *"Missing your beautiful face already. When can I see you again? ❤️"*
Hana laughed, "He's really laying it on thick, isn't he?"
Y/N rolled her eyes. *Ding.* She glanced down at her phone again. Another message from Oikawa: *"I bet you're even more gorgeous when you're annoyed. 😘"*
Y/N responded with a simple, *"Leave me alone ❤️"*, and stood up. "I'm gonna grab a snack."
She headed into the kitchen. *Ding.* Hana's curiosity got the best of her. "Can I read it?"
Y/N nodded, "Go for it."
Hana picked up the phone and read out loud, *"You can try to ignore me, but I'll just keep reminding you how amazing you are. 😏"*
Hana smirked and, glancing up at Y/N who was distracted, sent Oikawa a picture of one of the selfies Y/N had recently taken.
Y/N walked back over and sat down beside her. She took the phone, her eyes widening at the picture. "Hana!"
Hana had attached a message with it: *"Here's a little something to hold you over. 😉"*
Y/N quickly texted back, *"That was not meant for you. Hana sent it without me knowing. Delete it."*
*Ding.* Oikawa replied, along with a screenshot showing he had made the selfie his screensaver: *"Too late, it's already making my day better. Thanks for the beautiful view. 😘"*
Y/N blushed slightly at the picture. She texted back, *"Delete it. That's so embarrassing. Oikawa, I'm so serious. Delete it."*
*Ding.* His flirty response came: *"Why would I delete such perfection? Now you can have your man as your wallpaper too. 😏"* He sent a selfie of himself, looking effortlessly handsome.
Y/N blushed furiously and responded with, *"You're not my man."*
*Ding.* Another message from Oikawa: *"Not yet, but I will be. 😉"*
Y/N groaned, finally responding back with, *"One date. Okay? One."*
*Ding.* Oikawa's message was instant: *"That's all I need to make you fall for me. Get ready to be swept off your feet, beautiful. ❤️"*
Y/N sighed, looking at Hana. "I can't believe you did that."
Hana laughed, "Come on, admit it, he's kind of charming."
Y/N rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a small smile. "Maybe a little."
They both laughed, the tension easing as the evening light filtered through the living room window, casting a warm glow over the cozy space. The chatter of distant birds outside and the faint hum of the city provided a comforting backdrop to their conversation.
"So, where do you think he'll take you?" Hana asked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity.
Y/N shrugged, "Knowing Oikawa, probably somewhere extravagant. He seems like the type to go all out."
Hana grinned, "You better pick out something nice to wear, then."
Y/N nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. "Yeah, I guess I better."
Hello, could You do some headcanons of brock and the ventures Celebrating Christmas with Y/N and the Brock Quads(brock and y/n as a couple)
ᴀʟʟ ɪ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ꜰᴏʀ ᴄʜʀɪꜱᴛᴍᴀꜱ ɪꜱ ʏᴏᴜ...
✦ The boys were so excited to hear that you were coming over for Christmas that they decorated the entire house. They even wore their best Christmas attire: ugly sweaters! ✦ They even managed to get Brock and their dad to wear some. It kinda confused you a little when Brock sent you a text saying "get the kids something ugly to wear, you too." ✦ Dr. Orpheus was also in on it. He provided most of the snacks like he always does. ✦ Brock hangs a few mistletoes in hidden places so he could surprise you and snag a kiss before you could figure out what was going on. ✦ Everyone also anticipates the quads coming over. Rusty is absolutely dreading it. But Brock reassures him that everything will be under control and they will be on their best behavior. ✦ When you arrive, Brock is already giving you a hand with the kids, gifts, and whatever else you brought. ✦ Three kids immediately go play with Uncle Hank. He does the thing Brock does where he lets them hang off his arms while he flexes. The last one is with Uncle Dean, who likes to read with him. ✦ It gives you and Brock a second to be together, simply relishing it. But then it's game time! You can tell Hank was the one to coordinate everything, but everyone does have fun, nonetheless. ✦ Then comes the age-old tradition of the Venture Christmas story time. And for Brock to dress up for the kids. When it's over and Brock comes out in his Santa suit (and you hold your laughter in), the kids eat it up. They believe it's actually Santa and ask him all sorts of questions. ⤷ "Santa, why are you tall?" "Santa, I thought you were supposed to be fat???" "Santa-" "ALRIGHT- It's time for me to.. deliver presents to other kids." ✦ When he leaves to get changed back into his normal clothes, the kids rush up to you and exclaim what they saw all at once. It honestly warms your heart. ✦ And when their dad comes back they do the same to him. He goes along with it! Saying there's now way and how could he miss it? He had to run to the restroom. He guesses he should've held it in for a few more minutes. ✦ About those mistletoes, Brock does pull you in for a kiss and then points them out to you, earning him a playful slap to the chest. ✦ And at the end of it all, you take one great big family photo with the Ventures and everyone else that was there. Looking back at it, you've never seen Brock smile so genuinely in photos...until this one.
The Great Mammon's Protector
I wrote this in one sitting so I'll edit it later lol I'm in a Mammon kind of mood apparently, so enjoy this small little oneshot. I don't usually write for Mammon either so this is some practice!
Pairing: Mammon x GN!Reader
Word Count: 527 words
Trigger Warnings: None really, just some vague descriptions of a horror movie
Summary: You bring Mammon to the human realm to see a horror movie
Masterlist | More Obey me content
_____
You knew that Mammon didn't do well with horror movies. As much as he tried to put on a brave face, he always ended up tucked into your side, peering cautiously at the screen from behind your arm. Not that you minded, of course. You thought it was cute.
You were indifferent toward most horror movies, but your favourite actor was starring in one back in the human realm. You showed Mammon a picture of the poster, telling him how desperately you wanted to see it, your excitement rubbing off on him.
"I'll go with ya!" he said with a bright smile, "We'll make a day of it."
"Are you sure, Mammon?" You asked, "I mean, I'd love for you to tag along but you don't do well with horror movies..."
He waved away your concerns with a scoff. "A movie from the human realm has nothing on the Great Mammon." he said, "Besides, you need someone to protect ya! And who better than me?"
You shook your head with a fond smile. "Alright, but don't say I didn't warn you." you said, taking out your phone and booking two tickets.
--
The two of you arrived at a theatre in your hometown. Once you bought your snacks, you went to find your seats. But you noticed that Mammon was fidgeting in his seat nervously.
You leaned over toward him, "Are you okay?"
"Yup, definitely."
You gave him one last look before the lights dimmed and the movie began.
Everything was okay during the beginning of the movie. It was when the main character, played by your favourite actor, had their back turned to a dark room while a demon peered at them that Mammon gripped your hand.
You gave his hand a squeeze, hoping to provide him some comfort. He was fine for a little longer, his thumb stroking the back of your hand.
The music tensed, rising in pitch as the camera lingered down a dark hallway, before there was an admittedly rather corny jumpscare. The demon jumping out in front of the main character, teeth stained red with the blood of previous victims.
Mammon yelped, tucking himself into a ball, wrapping his arm around yours before he took your hand again. You leaned over to rest your cheek on the top of his head, his hair tickling your nose.
He seemed to relax with your touch. He made it through the last bit of jumpscares and close calls with small jumps, hiding his face in the crook of your neck.
Your heart swelled in your chest, touched that he trusted you so much to seek your comfort when he was afraid.
And finally, when the movie was over, you gave him a kiss on the head. "See, that wasn't so bad." you said.
"Yeah, definitely wasn't scary." Mammon said, trying to come across as nonchalant as possible.
"I guess it wasn't me who needed protecting huh?" You teased, nudging his side with your elbow.
No matter how much he denied it, there was a faint blush on his cheeks. You relented eventually, not before proudly declaring yourself as the Great Mammon's protector.
Girls Sleepover Party
MC, Sherry, and Letty still feel like the picnic was not enough time for them to hangout so they decided that they would extend it to be a sleepover party instead. (15+)
- PICNIC -
Sherry : *sigh* I really wish our tea party doesn't end. I still wish more time to hang out with just us girls. But it's almost time to head back. If not, we'll miss our curfew.
MC : I agree, Toa is scary when it comes to curfews.
Violet : That curfew doesn't apply for me. But if you're still scared of Toa, I can always bribe him with sweets.
Sherry : True, but what's the fun in that? I mean hanging out on school grounds is not fun. We could only have the lounge but it sucks. I mean we can ask my brother to use the S Rank's lounge but it's still a public space. Do you get what I mean?
MC : Yeah, I do. It's understandable. If being in a public space is your concern, why don't we just have a sleepover?
Violet : That sounds amazing! We could talk about the most recent gossips, our love life, or maybe about that one book I found at the library.
Sherry : You mean THAT book? not going to lie, it's going to be interesting.
MC : What book? I think I'm missing out on something here...
Sherry : Oh, you'll see.
Violet : But where will we be staying for our sleepover? I don't want to sound like I don't want to have a sleepover in my dorm but you know how it is.
MC : It's okay Letty, we get it. I mean, I guess that leaves to my room and Sherry's. I don't mind having a sleepover at my room though. The room the headmaster gave me is pretty cozy.
Violet : I agree, yours is cozy indeed but we need to consider about the space of our room. Will the room accommodate us or not. Your room is cozy but I don't think it will fit all of us. But I know whose room can. Sherry's room is huge!
Sherry : It is huge indeed, but currently it's still trashed with trinkets and clothes.
MC : So I guess, my place it is. Please come in my room with your pajamas. I'll provide as much amenities as I can. Just knock on my door if you're ready!
- MC's room -
*a knock was heard. MC opened the door to see Sherry. She greeted Sherry and gave her some cute slippers and some snacks for their sleepover. But there are still no signs of Letty*
MC : Sherry, have you seen Letty?
Sherry : That's odd. I haven't seen here and Letty is not the type that is late. Maybe she had something going on? I heard Fenn called her to talk about something for like a Luxure state affair.
MC : I see. I was worried but hearing that makes me a little less worried. While waiting for Letty, should we try to do something? Maybe try to embroider something?
Sherry : Boring! Why don't we talk about guys? You've been close with Rio lately. What is up with that?
MC : Stop it. We're just friends, Sherry. And stop shipping me and setting me up!
*suddenly there was a knock on the door. Turns out it was Letty. She finally arrived after needing to sort out documents for Fenn.*
Violet : Did you guys start the conversation without me? Oh, I am terribly offended.
MC : we didn't mean to left you out.
Violet : Anyways, what were you guys talking about?
Sherry : Guys, obviously.
Violet : Oooo... What about them? Were there any potential suitors?
Sherry : Maybe... I mean I noticed how MC is so close with Rio these days but she denied it. She always denies everything about being in a relationship. It's like she's avoiding them like a plague
MC : I'm not. I just think of Rio as a younger brother and most guys in this academy is just not my type. Imagine being with Guy Avari. I would be dread being alive.
Violet : True, some of the princes here sucks. I mean Guy is still a steal compared to Fenn.
Sherry : But you know which prince doesn't suck? My brother. Why don't you try it out with him, MC? I mean you guys would be a match! And as a bonus, we can be sisters!
MC : It's not like I had something with him, Sherry. He's a nice guy but that's the point. Roy is YOUR BROTHER. So what if one day we're going to have a girl talk? and maybe that girl talk is more sexual? So what am I going to do? It is going to be weird to talk about my sexual relationships to someone's sister!
Violet : You really got a point there.
Sherry : But he's such a nice gentlemen. Isn't he your type too? You guys would make a great couple. Besides, I don't mind hearing you talking about your sexual relationships if you're with my brother.
MC : Even though it's not awkward for you, it's awkward for me.
Sherry : Well that's such a pity. But if one day you're up for it, just tell me. I'll set you guys up on a date.
Violet : talking about dates, I had a date 2 days ago and he sucked. I swear I just wanna scream "You can go suck your own dick!" at the end of the date.
Sherry : Oh my! what did he do?
Violet : So we ended our date when he wanted to go for a test ride on how we'll do on the sheets. Generally, it's not really a bad thing and usually I do agree but the way he's saying in that conversation makes it sound like he just expects me to just have sex with him while he just doesn't care about my pleasure at all. He just cares about his own pleasure and he was such a jerk too!
Sherry : Oh my! So what did you do afterwards?
Violet : of course I smacked some sense to his head and left.
MC : As you should.
Violet : And guess what, I heard he can't even get women in the mood properly. I think he really needs some lesson from Fenn or maybe THAT book.
Sherry : I agree!
MC : What book?
Sherry : So, we found a pretty interesting book about love making and pleasure 101. It was ground breaking. literally.
Violet : it's the kama sutra of books. but make it spicy, hot and passionate. I brought the book, you should really see it so you could see what I mean.
Sherry : I can guarantee that it's worth it to read it.
MC : Sometimes I wonder how you act like this and you know this much stuff, Sherry. As long as I know, you never have a paramour. I mean it's not a surprise if it's Letty but you, Sherry?
Sherry : I mean, we're all adults so I don't see the problem here. And sometimes it's good to have some research so when you do experience it, you're already a master. I mean take a look at my brother. That book literally raised him and elevated him to become a true man.
Violet : sometimes I wonder how did you know that too, Sherry.
Sherry : sometimes a girl needs to keep her secrets
(note : well that's it. I will make another chapter about the girls reading and discussing about the book. maybe I should make it shorter? I mean I'm still new to this so please give me feedbacks. thank you)
Royally Screwed!
Read on AO3
1/2/3/4/5
Hey guys! Sorry for the delay, there was a lot of issues going on and it took out a lot of energy from me. But it's here now and I hope its worth the wait. Hope you guys enjoy! Also I tried to edit it as much as I can but I'll go back is there's any spelling mistakes, but other than that, here's chapter 2!
2. Irish Eyes
Kaufmo groaned as he pressed a hand to his lower back, tonight’s show hadn’t been kind to him in the slightest. The ringmaster has suggested a few new stunts for his act to make the audience go crazy. Now usually that would be fine…if the ringmaster hadn’t announced it while performing. It gave Kaufmo no time to warm up or prepare before he saw an anvil failing for the sky and aiming right at him. He managed to dodge it just in time and had earned him some good reception, but he had twisted his body the wrong way while ducking, leaving a pretty bad sore spot on his back.
He sighed, at least it was over now and he could have a better chance tomorrow morning to prepare for that new trick (and anything else the ringmaster hadn’t told him about yet). He was going to head to his tent for the tight when he heard light sniffling from the lion cages. He turned and tried to peak through the shadows to see who was inside of Ragatha’s lion’s cage…oh, it was Pomni.
The child was the newest member of the cast, and the youngest. Now that Kaufmo thought about it, no one had joined the circus at her age before, so the experience must have been so much more jarring for a young girl. And she was only five years old, the poor thing.
The girl was patting each lion’s mane as she tried to control her tears, the large animals providing as much comfort as they could. She had been quite nervous around the two felines when she first met them, but after seeing how tame they were, they were a great source of security for her in times like this. Times when she felt overwhelmingly homesick.
Kaufmo tapped one of the bars, alerting everyone of his presence. The lions let out a growl when Pomni let out a startled gasp, only to calm down once they saw the clown. “Easy, it’s just me,” he said reassuringly as Pomni gripped tighter to one of the lions. “Hey kiddo, sorry for scaring you.”
Pomni wiped her eyes as the clown climbed in, sitting on the wall opposite her with one of the lions between her. The other lion came back to sit beside her, nudging her hand for more scratches.
“Huh, Simba and Kovu seemed to have taking a liking to you,” Kaufmo mused. Despite their large size, both of the large felines were rather friendly to the rest of the circus. Give them a snack and scratch their favourite spot and you were practically their best friend.
“Yeah, they’re nice,” Pomni whispered, harshly rubbing her the tears off her cheeks to hide the fact that she had been crying. “What are you doing here?”
“Well, the show just finished up and I was gonna get back to my tent,” he explained, “But, then I heard someone wasn’t feeling that great.”
Pomni paled, hiding her face in Simba’s mane. “It’s nothing!” she mumbled into the fur, “I just had something in my eyes, I’m fine!”
Kaufmo hummed. Pomni seemed to be quite a particularly panicky child, one wrong move and she’ll be shaking like a leaf, in fear for her life. He had to approach her carefully, she had already been through enough. “Here,” he pulled out a handkerchief. Pomni stared at it cautiously. “Don’t worry, it’s joke free. Clown’s honour.” He put a hand to his chest with a mock serious expression.
The child smiled, taking the little white fabric and wiped her cheeks.
“I know you’re scared,” Kaufmo said, “I understand. We’ve never had anyone as young as you join. Well, ‘join’ might be a might of a strong word. And you have every right to be scared, upset, angry. It isn’t fair what the ringmaster did. If you need to scream, scream.”
“Maybe not scream,” she muttered, “But the ringmaster said we’re not allowed to get upset.”
“That’s because he’s void of any emotion and doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” he placed the tips of his fingers on her hand just in case she wanted to pull it away. “Pomni, you’re five. Cry if you have to cry.”
Suddenly, a wall had crumbled and the dams were loose. The child latched herself onto the clown, muffled cries escaping her and tears soaking his costume. He instantly wrapped his arms around her. “Shh, there, there,” he whispered, “It’s gonna be okay kiddo, I got you.”
“I want my Ma and Pa!” she wailed as he stroked her hair. “I wanna go home!”
Kaufmo sighed. She was way too young for this. Curse the ringmaster and his void heart. “I know kiddo,” he hugged her tighter. “I know.”
They remained like that for a moment, Kaufmo letting Pomni cried while he stroked her hair before the child pulled away, her cheeks tear stained. “Sorry,” she sniffed.
“There’s nothing to apologise for,” he reassured her. “Why don’t you tell me a bit about yourself, would that cheer you up?”
“Um, okay,” Pomni nodded. “I…I like to sing a little bit, my ma used to teach me.”
“Huh,” Kaufmo lit up, an idea forming. “You know, I like to play guitar, I used to play it a lot.”
Pomni beamed, crawling closer to him, “Really?!”
“Heck yeah,” Kaufmo chuckled, “How about I go get it and I can show you what I can do?”
“Yeah!” Pomni cheered, giggling and falling back, a lion catching her with the side of his body.
“Okay kiddo,” Kaufmo grinned, “You just wait there. I’ll be right back.”
The clown had never run so fast in his life. He couldn’t recall the last time he played his guitar, but he remembered how much he loved it. Once he made it to his tent, he picked up the instrument from the side of his bed and ran straight back to Pomni, the little girl was playing with Kovu’s mane before gasping with excitement when she saw the guitar.
“Okay, it’s been a while,” Kaufmo told her while tuning it, “But I think I remember this.”
He began playing a simple chord, rummaging through his mind before landing on a song he hadn’t sung for anyone.
You can't take my past
You can't take my history
You could take my Pa
But his name’s a mystery
Nothing you can take from me was ever worth keeping
Oh nothing you can take from me was ever worth keeping
“Wow!” Pomni looked absolutely awestruck, it was the cutest thing in the world. “That’s so cool!”
“It’s not finished yet,” he admitted bashfully. “I haven’t really had the time to.”
“I can help finish it?” Pomni suggested shyly, “And maybe…you could teach me too?”
Kaufmo’s eyes widened, not only had he not played for someone in so long, but it was the first time a person asked him to teach them. For the first time, someone didn’t want to now the clown that Kaufmo played, but rather the part of a person that the ringmaster had forced him to bury so long ago. “Yeah,” he nodded, “I think that can be arranged kiddo.”
He carefully placed the guitar on her lap, the instrument was comically big for her little body, but she managed to hold it properly. She giggled with excitement as her guided her hands on where to go. “So, if you put your fingers here, it makes a makes a C chord,” he told her, her fingers making the shape and strummed the strings, her face brightening after playing her first ever note. “Atta girl, and just make this shape and you’ll get a G chord.” He shifted them again, grinning as she played the second note.
“I’m doing it!” she exclaimed.
“You’re doing great kiddo,” he grinned, “Now, have you got any ideas for lyrics?”
The child nodded so fast that he was afraid she’d hurt herself. With a gentle voice, she began to sing.
You can't take my charm!
You can't take my humour…
.
.
.
Twenty Years Later
Kaufmo hummed cheerily as he walked through the inn the rest of the cast and himself were staying in. They were here for the rest of the week to perform, but everyone had really wanted to explore the rest of the town. And who was he to stop them?
Ragatha had wanted to see if they had any good treats for her lions, Zooble wanted to buy some flowers for Gangle, and Moon and Sun had wanted to wander with everyone and see the sights. Kaufmo decided to stay, wanting to take the day to rest. However, there was one person who didn’t say anything about wanting to go or stay.
Pomni.
Despite last night’s fiasco with the prince, she seemed to be in a good mood. He was heading to her room, just to check up on her and see if she wanted to go out as well. He was about to knock when he heard the faint strums of a guitar and a female voice singing along with the tune.
My mother says I have Irish eyes
Irish eyes, Irish eyes
My mother says I have Irish eyes
They go ever so blue under stormy skies
But they're never so blue as when I let them cry
Kaufmo smiled, Pomni’s voice was always so heavenly whenever she sang. Every song she wrote, he would always be excited to hear. He cracked the door open a little, seeing her standing with her guitar in hand as she sang. She wore a simple shift with brown stays adorned with pink stitched flowers and a light green skirt that reached her black boots. She looked a little bit like spring itself.
My father says I have English hair
English hair, English hair
Brown like the bark of an oak somewhere
Like the bed of a lake where the hemlock grows
Like the thorn in the stem of an English rose
She began to twirl happily, dancing along with her song without a care in the world.
I'm a map of the world and the ones before
One foot in sea and one on shore
Every step, every hope flung high
I'm a map of them all with my Irish eyes
She jumped, whipping round when she heard the sound of clapping, only to soften when she saw that it was Kaufmo standing at the door. “Don’t scare me like that,” she giggled, putting her guitar away.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you kiddo,” he said, “Is that a new song?”
“Yeah, I began to write it when we were on the road,” she confirmed, “Decided to give it a whirl before I went out to town.”
“You’re going out?” Kaufmo asked hopefully. Pomni wasn’t normally someone who liked to be out in busy places when she wasn’t performing but seeing her actively wanting to go out was quite a big step for her. While it left him protective, it left him proud of her as well.
“Yeah,” she nodded, “Gangle wanted to go look and see the dresses here so I wanted to go with her as well. Ragatha and Moon should be with us as well.”
“I’ll come too,” Kaufmo said, “Just in case you want to leave early and come back.”
“Kaufmo,” she sighed, “I’ll be fine.”
“I have no doubt about that,” Kaufmo reassured her, “It’s just, you know…It’s always going to be my instinct to protect you.”
Pomni smiled, walking over and wrapping her arms around the clown, with Kaufmo doing the same. “I understand, what we went through was…its over now,” Pomni said, “I wanna be able to go into towns without being terrified of who I run into, enjoy my time with my family. With my Pa.”
Kaufmo patted her cheek, she never failed to amaze him. “Well then, what are we waiting for?” he asked, “Let’s go have some fun.”
Pomni patted his hand back before Kaufmo let it fall to his side, both of them leaving the room and heading downstairs to greet everyone else before going into town.
.
.
.
Jax paced back and forth in the dining room, dressed in a simple white blouse, blue waistcoat and black slacks. The room had been cleared earlier after breakfast, but he needed the space to pace and think about his plan to woo Pomni. She was going to be tricky – if her outburst was anything to go by – so he had to tread carefully about this. Motley watched the prince go back and forth, the kitten perched on the table experiencing the most brainstorming that Prince Jax had ever done in his life.
How would one win over the heart of a spitfire? A being so beautiful and entrances you with its song and dance but can easily scorch you if you make one wrong move. But it was that danger that pulled him closer to her. Only a woman like her deserved the best when it came to courting. But where to start, what should he do?
Queenie and Kinger watched their son’s pacing from the slightly ajar door. The staff had alerted them of the prince’s peculiar behaviour, so they wanted to investigate it for themselves – from afar of course.
“I still can’t believe it,” Kinger muttered, “Never would I have though the day would come where Jax would be so entranced by a girl.”
“Isn’t it wonderful?” Queenie mused, “I’m not surprised it was the jester that stole his heart. She does seem to be such a darling. Although, I will admit, I am slightly concerned with what Jax has up his sleeve with this one. His mind is quite…devious after all.”
Kinger hummed in agreement, “That is true. He always has these great plans when it comes to playing tricks on the servants or his escape attempts. Part of me doesn’t want to know what type of plan he comes up with for courting her.”
“Yes,” Queenie nodded, thinking to herself for a moment. The jester, Pomni was her name she believed, seemed like such a sweet young woman. While she was glad her son was in love, Queenie was completely aware of Pomni’s outburst with him they other day (after all she was outside tent when it happened, and was able to hear every single word). “How about you let me handle this Kinger dear? I’ve had my experience when it comes to men falling to a woman’s feet before. I could help correct him with the proper ways of how to win a girl’s heart.”
Kinger blushed, memories of himself as a young prince falling for a lord’s daughter many moons ago flooding back to him like a tidal wave. “Uh, y-yes darling,” he stuttered slightly, “I believe that would be for the best. The last person he needs advice from is his old man who laned face first into mud when trying to court the person he admired.”
“But I fell in love with you because of that dearest,” Queenie teased, giggling at Kinger’s flustered expression. “Now, if you excuse me. I have a son to steer away from making a fool of himself.”
“Good luck,” Kinger gave her reassuring thumbs up. Truth be told, when it came to Jax (especially since he was in love) she probably needed that luck.
Queenie took a breath, opening the door further and entering the dining room, though it seemed that Jax didn’t notice her presence, still caught up in his planning and muttering. Motley did though, letting out a happy mewl and ran over to her, climbing up her cloak and settling himself in her arms. The queen let out a small laugh, running a finger over his head as she walked up to her son.
Jax jumped as soon as he heard the sound of a throat clearing, exhaling when he saw that it was only Queenie. “Holy shit!” he cursed, placing a hand on his chest, “You scared me!”
“Language young man,” Queenie reprimanded him, “I just wanted to see if you were alright, the servants said that you haven’t left this room since breakfast.”
Jax sighed, the moment word about anything happening to him got out, his mother would instantly be by his side to make sure he way okay. It was one of Queenie’s most admirable qualities. “Yes, I’m fine mother. I’ve just got a lot on my mind.”
“I see,” Queenie hummed, her eyes giving off a teasing glint. “It’s definitely not the jester from last night’s performance.”
Jax was so sure that his fur had changed from a periwinkle purple to a cherry red as he whipped round to face his mother, a smug look curved upon her features as she eyed her son knowingly. “M-mom!” he nearly choked on his words.
“Careful now dear,” Queenie chuckled, “The last thing we need is for our heir to suffocate on himself. Besides it was quite obvious, you immediately trailed after her like a loyal pet the moment her performance ended and are still infatuated with the girl despite her verbal lashing with you. Yes I’ve heard it, I’m sure most of the kingdom did too.”
“I can’t help it,” Jax rubbed the back of his neck. “The moment I heard her singing, my soul was bewitched. I had to listen to her song, her voice was telling a story and I wanted to learn it word for word until she’s ingrained into my memory. And her beauty, I don’t think I’ve met another person who radiated starlight just as much as she did. She’s a book that I can’t put down, I need to know more about her! I have to let her know that she’s the one for me!”
Never in all her years did Queenie think her son was capable of being bashful. Everything about Jax, from the way he spoke to the way he strutted down the hall screamed nothing but self-righteous confidence. What type of magic tricks did Pomni possess to reveal this new side of the prince? “Well, well,” Queenie breathed, “It seems that you’re very taken with this girl.”
“Oh, she definitely stole my heart and run off with it,” Jax sighed, “I just need to know what to do that will make her realise just how perfect I am for her!”
Queenie cringed, she had a feeling this was coming. The last thing Jax needed was his ego sabotaging any chance of Pomni liking at least a quarter of him back. After all, it was his arrogance that made him receive her angry and biting tone with him, if he continued down this road he would ending up kissing any plans of courting her goodbye. “Now Jax, I understand the butterflies that come with meeting someone that has you ‘bewitched’,” she spoke carefully, hoping that her son’s head wasn’t already full of outlandish plans already. “However, Pomni has already made her opinion of you quite clear. I will support you if you want to make amends with her, however I will put a cease to that if you try and force her to become yours.”
“Force her?!” Jax gasped, flabbergasted at his mother’s suggestion. Women would throw themselves at him without Jax doing nothing more that blink, how on earth did she think he was going to force Pomni to be his? “She’ll come running to me when I show her how charming I can be, before she leaves she will practically be begging me to marry her. It’s just as easy as that.”
“Jax,” Queenie shook her head with a disappointed frown, “Are you even listening to yourself? You barely know anything about having these types of feelings, how on earth do you plan on courting a girl if you don’t take them time to access yourself first?”
“Well judging how you and father say sappy crap to each other all the time and don’t end up gagging by how overly sweet it is, it’s probably not that hard,” Jax shrugged. His heart sunk at Queenie’s crestfallen expression. He went too far there. Motley gently purred into the queen’s chest, providing comfort for her hurt state.
Despite the saccharine display his parents put on, Jax could tell how much they treasured their love for one another. To insult their bond was an insult to his mother as well, and he hated making her feel awful. “I…mother forgive me,” Jax exhaled slowly, “I got caught up there, I didn’t mean that-”
The door burst open as a guard entered into the dining room, “Your highnesses. The markets have new products after the recent shipment. Would you care to be escorted into town today, or shall I have the servants search for something that you need?”
“I, I suppose it would be nice to go into town today,” Queenie turned to her son, her eyes giving a soft forgiving shine. “What do you think Jax?”
They were okay, Jax nearly sighed with relief. Seeing his mother upset was his own personal torture, and he hated every bit of it.
“I also wanted to inform you that the circus cast from last night are also in town today,” The guard informed them, “In case you have any words to say to them for their performance.”
Jax practically beamed at that, his grin nearly splitting his face. He cleared his throat, putting on a suave look and straightened his back. After all, he had a jester to court. “Well there’s no harm in saying hi to them, now is there?” he smirked, “I think a little trip sounds just delightful.”
Queenie paled. She recognised that smirk, Jax always wore that smirk when he was up to no good. “Jax…” Queenie drawled warningly.
“Go alert my father that we plan to leave as soon as possible, in case he wants to join,” Jax commanded the guard.
The soldier in question raised a brow at that, familiar with the young prince and his antics, before turning to the queen for her verdict.
Queenie sighed, once Jax’s mind was set that was no point in trying to change it. Besides, she really wanted to go out today. “Inform Kinger that we plan to leave soon,” she said, “I would hate for him to miss out on this.”
“Yes, your majesty,” the guard bowed, turning on his heel and walking out the door.
Queenie gave Jax a glare, a silent threat to not do anything stupid.
The prince gulped, whenever Queenie sent him that look it gave him nothing but sinking dread in the pit of his gut. He had a lot on the line today, not only risking it all to win Pomni’s affection, but also to make sure he didn’t suffer from his mother’s angered wrath as well. “D-don’t worry m-mother,” he stammered, “I promise that I have nothing but good intentions going forward.”
Queenie raised a brow as Motley let out a meow – Jax swore the little shit was mocking him. “As for you,” He picked up Motley and set him on the floor, “You’re staying here. The last thing we need for you is to get lost and become someone else’s pet.” Motley mewled, pawing at Jax’s leg with a pleading look on his face. “Nope, I’ve made up my mind. Your tricks aren’t working on me today.”
He turned to his mother, offering his arm out to her, “Shall we?”
Queenie sighed, letting out a little laugh at her son’s outlandish behaviour, “I suppose. But you better behave, got it young man?” She nearly growled.
“…Yes ma’am,” Jax whimpered pathetically.
Queenie patted his cheek, “Good. Now then, let’s go find your father before he chases after another butterfly for his collection. We don’t need a repeat of…last time.”
Jax shuddered at the memory, despite his own bug-like pranks, he certainly didn’t want to do what his father was capable of. “You and me both mother,” he nodded.
He hid the dopey grin that stretched on his features the more he thought about the jester, how he was going to spoil her, give her everything she could ever hope for and more, to do anything to make her his and his alone. He couldn’t wait to see her again.
.
To tell the truth, Pomni was nothing but nerves when to came to public situations. It was different whenever she was performing, she knew that by the end of the day – as long as she put on a smile and a good show – everything would turn out according to plan. When it came to actually being in a crowd full of people, she always felt like she was going to be sick. It wasn’t easy to put on a façade when there was no pre-planned performance. The thought of being around so many people, not knowing what they were like or what they would say, she could make one slight mistake and everything could go wrong.
She was a bit glad that Kaufmo insisted to come along, to read the signs on her face in case she had to get out of here. But another part of her felt guilty for doing that. She wanted to enjoy herself put in public, to not fear the next person coming here way, to not fear if they had any other ulterior motives. Why did her mind have to be like this? And she hated how she always dragged Kaufmo down with her, he deserved to have one day where he wasn’t constantly worrying over her, how did he not see her as a burden? She just wished could be…normal. But someone like her could never be normal, not in this lifetime anyway.
Still, she wasn’t going to waste her time dwelling on misery, life was too short for that. She remained glued by Moon and Ragatha’s sides, Kaufmo trailing behind them like a guard dog (a rather colourful guard dog but the intention was clear). She wanted to have fun, have a day to just be Pomni, not worrying about the performance for tonight and if it was perfect enough. That was for later, this was now.
From the corner of her eye, she could see Sun marvelling over cakes at the window of a bakery, his mouth watering at each flavour presented through the glass. Gangle and Zooble were at a flower stall, with the latter buying a rose the same colour as the ribboned woman and gifting it to her, making Gangle blush. Pomni smiled at the couple, maybe one day she would find someone to share a bond with like Zooble and Gangle.
She heard a small gasp, turning she noticed two young girls pointing at her while whispering excitedly. Pomni shook her head fondly, they must have recognised her from the show the other night. She gave them a small curtsy, the children become even more excited before bounding over to her. She was a little bit nervous with the sudden closeness and enthusiasm from the children, but Moon and Ragatha were behind her, making sure she was alright.
She was fine, all she got was a fright. “Hello,” she waved at the two girls, “Hope can I help you?”
“Hi miss!” The first girl squealed, “You were so pretty last night!”
“Why thank you,” Pomni cooed, “Did you two enjoy the show?”
“Yeah!” the second girl cheered, “You were my favourite! You were so sparkly and twisty!”
Pomni giggled, they must have been referring to her costumes and her dance flexibility on the aerial silks. It was the main highlights of her performance and what boosted audience numbers. She wasn’t surprised that the girls liked it so much. “I’m so glad you two had fun,” she grinned, her chest fluttering at the girl’s collective beaming faces.
“What you like one of our flower crowns?” the first girl asked, “It has pretty daises!”
Pomni placed both hands to her chest in a flattered manner, “I would love to have one of your flowers crowns.”
The girls jumped with glee, fishing into one of their satchels and pulling out a delicate daisy chain tied into a circle. Pomni lowered her head as they placed it on her hair, the whole interaction made her feel giddy and warm. After all, who didn’t love flower crowns? She never got to do that at their age, so there was something bittersweet having a chance to do this now. She was about to open her mouth to thank the girls for their gift, when a loud and brash voice made her flinch.
“I knew a crown would look good on you,” Prince Jax’s voice made her wince, “Just have it in gold and you’ll look like a real princess.”
Pomni took a breath, plastering on a face of fake kindness and concealed annoyance as she turned to the prince – Moon and Ragatha were protectively standing on each side of her as Kaufmo stood from a distance, ready to intervene in case anything happened. “Prince Jax,” she spoke through gritted teeth, “To what do I owe the pleasure.”
“Your presence is enough for that little lady,” he grinned as she bristled at the nickname, “I was just making my way through town and decided to stop bye and say hi.”
“Well, now you did, so you can go now,” Pomni rolled her eyes and turned to face the girls again. Moon and Ragatha smirked while Kaufmo’s chest puffed proudly.
Jax faltered a bit, he didn’t want this conversation to end so soon! He ran up to her, dodging the ragdoll and Moon, ignoring Kaufmo’s icy glare and shoved himself in front of Pomni’s eyeline. “If you like, I could get you a little souvenir,” he offered suavely, “After all, daisies die pretty fast. Kind of a pathetic gift if you ask me. A little gold chain with a diamond would like nice around that pretty neck of yours.”
Pomni scowled at him, her anger growing more as she heard the two little girls’ sniffle at his insult. They were young, yes, but she knew about much effort must have gone into making this crown. And the fact that she never got to do this as a child only added fuel to the fire. “You have some nerve insulting the talents of your people,” she poked him harshly in the chest as a look of fear spread across the prince’s face. “This is a gift made from the gentle hands of the next generation of your kingdom, don’t you dare degrade this is present in front of them. And even if it were to die quickly, it only means I must cherish it more before that happens.”
“I-um,” Jax stammered, he was barely a minute into talking with her and he was already screwing up. He had to try a new tactic. With quick thinking, he ran over to the flower stall, blindly picked up a bouquet, slammed a few coins down and ran back over to Pomni. “Here,” he shoved the flowers into her face, making her splutter. “As an apology.”
After Pomni regained her bearings, she took a proper look at what was shoved in her face. Taking a note of the flowers in his hand, she gave him a deadpanned look, “Orange lilies and yellow carnations?”
Jax gave her a smug grin, looking as though he won the lottery, “From Prince Jax himself. You’re welcome.”
“They literally symbolise hatred and rejection,” said Pomni. Jax’s face fell, as though lightening struck through him at the realisation. “I think I’ll stick with my daisies.”
With that, she gave him a tight-lipped smile and walked away – but not before giving the two girls a warm hug and reassuring them that she loved her new flower crown.
Jax was about to go after her, until he was stopped by the death glares of Ragatha and Moon, as well and a tight grip on his shoulder. His eyes followed the hand attached to the arm, all the way to the furious gaze of Kaufmo. “I don’t give a damn if you’re royalty or not,” the clown growled, “But you will not disrespect my kid in front of me. Do I make myself clear?”
Jax gulped, the last thing he needed today was to be murdered by an overprotective clown, “Yes sir.”
“Good,” Kaufmo took his hand off, brushing it on his suit and walked away to find Pomni, Ragatha and Moon in tow.
Jax let out a breath, he never knew clowns could be that scary. He froze at the sound of a throat clearing, he groaned as he looked at Kinger and Queenie, disappointment etched on their faces with the royal guards standing behind them. “I ask for one thing Jax,” Queenie muttered, “One thing. For you to behave, and this is what you do?!”
“To be fair…this is me we’re talking about,” Jax gave them a nervous chuckle.
The couple’s expression didn’t change. “Come on,” Kinger sighed, “You’re sticking with us for the rest of the day.”
Jax whined, crossing his arms as he followed his parents and the guards. Queenie stuck by his side though, leaning up to whisper in his ear, “You know, the next time you want to impress a girl, keep the snide comments about simple gifts from children to yourself. You aren’t going to get anywhere if you keep up that attitude.”
Jax grumbled under his breath. But his mother did have a point though, they were just kids, he didn’t have to stoop so low. His stomach churned, hearing those whimpers from those little girls struck him in the heart, how could he be so cold-hearted? “You’re right mother, that wasn’t the best choice of words,” he admitted. Queenie’s eyes sparked a little bit, perhaps her son was finally taking the right step- “That’s why I’m going to spend so much fortune on Pomni and gift her anything she could ever ask for without commenting on the boring stuff she likes!”
Queenie’s face fell. Nope, Jax was still up his own ass.
.
The minute Jax was back in his room, he started writing a list. He wrote down everything he knew about how to woo a woman, and as someone who was quite popular with the ladies, he felt pretty confident with his abilities. Truly, he was a master of his craft. Once he was satisfied with his plan, he got to work, with Motley watching the trainwreck preparing itself from afar.
Firstly, he went to the best broker he could find and purchased the most beautiful, one-of-a-kind diamond that he had ever seen in his life. It was just as striking as Pomni’s perfect eyes. He had a servant deliver it to her, content that within a day’s time she would be coming to the castle to visit him. However, the servant had come back and instead of his jester, he returned with news that Pomni had sold the diamond to a local jewellery shop, where it was smashed to pieces and turned into lovely necklaces for the other women of the village.
Okay, so she wasn’t a fan of shiny things. It doesn’t matter, he still had a few plans up his sleeve.
Next, he took out a deposit of his spendings (it was at least enough to buy ten castles) and requested it to be sent to Pomni in her name for her to do what she pleased with it. His heart skipped a beat when he found out she accepted it, only for him to choke on his tongue when he found out that she had donated it all to the orphanage of the village. The only thing he received from her was a note telling him to ‘do something beneficial with his spendings since he had so much of it’.
He swooned over the fact that his little jester was so charitable, but he couldn’t ignore the irritation that came with it! He was going further beyond for her, yet she wouldn’t even spare a glance at him. What else did he have to do to make her notice him?!
It continued like that, he would send her the most lavish, expensive gifts that would make any man or woman swoon, and every single time she either gave it away or returned it. Jax was starting to get on his last nerve, she was going to notice his affections one way or another. He still had one more plan, and if this didn’t work (which it would!) then he was truly at a loss.
The next day, he gave instructions to the royal announcer. A royal banquet was going to be held at the castle tonight, with Jax wanting nothing more than to have Pomni to be his plus one for the evening. Maybe it was a bit of a jerk move to announce this publicly, but he was just so desperate to see her again, he was willing to do anything just to catch a glimpse of her lovely face.
He awaited patiently, so sure that his plan was going to work. When the announcer came back, there was a smug grin on the prince’s lips, expecting for him to say that his jester would be attending tonight. However, the situation was much more different than the prince had hoped. When the news went out to the public that Prince Jax wanted to invite Pomni to the banquet, she had merely given the announcer a simple bow and replied:
“I appreciate the invitation, but I will have to decline the prince’s offer and his lack of planning ahead.”
Jax felt as if he had been kicked in the stomach.
She rejected his invite! In public no less! It was one thing to reject an invite to such a regal occasion, but to reject a royal? That was the biggest humiliation that anyone could ever do to royalty! It would leave a mark on his reputation! The only prince known in all the lands to be rejected for all the kingdom to see.
And this is where it left him now, alone at the banquet, swirling a glass of wine as he mumbled to himself. “It was the diamond, I should’ve gotten her the ruby,” he muttered under his breath, “Diamonds are overrated anyways. I don’t understand, I’m great with courting, how could anyone-”
“You know, you can tap a cocoon as many times as you want, the butterfly still won’t come out,” he jumped at the sound of his mother’s voice as she walked up to him.
“Mother,” he gasped, “You can’t keep surprising me like that!”
“Just like how you can’t keep pushing this girl to be with you,” Queenie crossed her arms over her chest, “Honestly Jax. Out of all the ideas you have had in your entire life, announcing to the public to make Pomni join you for tonight has got to be your most ridiculous one yet! Honestly, I don’t blame her for rejecting you, someone had to hit you with common sense eventually!”
“I-I, but!” Jax stammered, but deep down he knew his mother was right. Karma had to hit him eventually, and it hit him with the most alluring, beautiful, one-of-a-kind songbird that fluttered into his heart, only for her to be completely out of his reach. He sighed, “I just… I never felt this way for anyone before.”
“Really?! I couldn’t tell with the way you were constantly making a fool of yourself!” she ignored Jax’s gaping mouth towards her, continuing her speech. “She has expressed to you multiple times that she isn’t interested with what you have to offer Jax! Either you cease these attempts or you actually find something that will let her see you in a different light!”
“How?! If this is all that I can offer her, then it’s already too late for me. You know it, you see it! I’m nothing but a reckless prince who keeps ruining things for myself,” Jax’s shoulder’s tensed, taking a breath while feeling his heart twist in his chest as his eyes drifted down to the ground. “For the first time something finally good came my way and I already messed it up. But I don’t want to let her go.”
Queenie’s shoulders sagged, her face twisting somberly, “You already have so many good things Jax. I wish you could see it too.”
Jax was about to open his mouth to ask what she meant, but Queenie was already walking away. He stared at the wine in his cup, watching the bubbles rise to the top. Through the glass, he could see the other guests spying on him, whispering to one another while pointing at him.
He knew they were talking about his most recent blunder with Pomni, and as much as it hurt, it wasn’t the first time the upper class had gossiped about him. Even before his pranks, before his reputation as the ‘disaster heir of Laphria’, ever since he was a child every lord, duke and count always had their opinions and comments about of him, none of them friendly.
Jax scoffed at them, he didn’t care. At least now that he was older he had a reason for them to talk nothing but rubbish about him, instead of simply being a child.
He took a swig of his wine, it was going to be a long night.
My nana says I have travelling feet
Travelling feet, travelling feet
Slippers for princesses don't fit me
But I dance to my own drum, bright and bold
And my travelling feet always get me home
Pomni strummed her guitar in the dressing room, fully decked in her costume and waiting for the performance to start later. She always got nervous before a show (especially after the public invite she received from the prince) but her music always calmed her down.
My sister says I've a restless soul
Restless soul, restless soul
Easy to catch, but I'm hard to hold
Like a song on the wind that you caught one day
I get under your skin, then I slip away
Gangle, Zooble, Moon and Ragatha were in there as well, adding the last touches to their costumes while listening to Pomni’s song. The girl had come a long way, for better and for worse, but her music was one of the things that gave the circus members hope. After what they went though, they could all use it.
I'm a map of the world and the ones before
One foot in sea and one on shore
Every step, every hope flung high
I'm a map of them all with my Irish eyes
“That’s coming along really well Pomni!” Gangle clapped as Pomni finished up.
The jester smiled, resting her head on the side of her guitar as she faced the rest of the group, “It still has some polishing but it’s becoming a new favourite of mine.”
“I’m glad you have something to focus on after that whole mess earlier,” Moon sneered at the memory of the announcer, feeling nothing but fury at the prince for trying to pressure Pomni to join him. “It took bravery to decline such a heavy offer Pomni.”
Pomni cringed, “I don’t understand, what on earth does the prince see in me for him to keep running back! I mean, you’d think he’d take a hint after what I said to him the first time I saw him! But no, he just wants to keep being annoying. Ugh, men are the worst thing in this realm.”
“Agreed,” Ragatha nodded, “Men are only born with half a brain with not a lot going on in there.”
“I don’t know,” Zooble shrugged, “Granted, women are better. But you seem pretty passionate about someone you find annoying Pomni.”
“W-what?!” Pomni stuttered, nearly dropping the guitar, “What is that supposed to mean?!”
“You know, if you really hate him Pomni you wouldn’t be talking about him this much,” Zooble grinned, crossing her arms over her chest.
Gangle gasped, an excited grin gracing her mask, “It’s true! Pomni, you can say you like him, we won’t judge!”
“I-I, no! I don’t like him! That’s absurd!” Pomni stuck her tongue out in disgust.
“Exactly, there’s no way that prince even deserves Pomni,” Ragatha nodded.
“Honestly, you and Zooble might be so head over heels with one another that you both are making up stories in your head!” Moon frowned, shaking her head.
“Or maybe we’re able to see the obvious,” Zooble chuckled.
“No! No! You don’t see anything!” Pomni squeaked. “Besides, Jax is not my type at all! He’s so loud and rude. And has a terrible sense of humour. And struts as if he owns the place. And he has untamed, wild eyes…that shine. And he’s always smiling no matter what’s thrown his way. And his smile, its so…” She trailed off, whipping her head up when she noticed Zooble’s shit eating grin, Gangle’s giddy face and the shocked looks that Ragatha and Moon shared. “…It’s so annoying! I mean come on!”
Her eyes darted between everyone, no one was buying her excuse. “I’m getting some air!” she huffed, setting her guitar down and running out of the dressing room.
Once she was at a good distance, she climbed the nearest rope connected to the ceiling, balancing and swinging on it slightly before jumping onto a nearby trapeze swing. She sighed with relief, despite her anxiety, the vertigo from being up so high was enough to distract her. She smiled a little bit, from up here she could see half of behind the tent and the audience were starting to flood the seats.
Her mind went back to what Zooble said, more so what they said about Jax. Her?! Like him?! How could she ever like him?! They were so different and he oozed nothing but a ‘higher than thou’ attitude, something she despised. She hated him, yup that was her final verdict, she hated him.
But unfortunately Gangle was right, she couldn’t get him out of here head.
She groaned, why couldn’t the rabbit prince get out of her head?!
“Did you hear about Prince Jax?”
Pomni perked up, looking down at the crowd. There was a group of young adults around her age, from the fine fabrics and jewels they wore that had to be belonging to quite prestigious families.
There were two young women and men, each one of them wearing vicious smirks. “This has to be his most embarrassing blunder yet.”
Pomni frowned, she didn’t like their tones at all.
“As if he wasn’t an embarrassment enough,” the first man sneered, “Honestly, I can’t believe that the crown will be going to him.”
“Marriage into the crown is the only saving quality of that man,” the first woman giggled, “That and his parties.”
“Imagine how low you have to sink to be like that,” the second man cackled, “Only being good for parties and nights in the sheets.”
The second woman whacked his arm with her fan, “Don’t talk about such topics in public!”
“He isn’t wrong though,” the first woman pointed out, “He was so desperate to lose his virtue, such a pig!”
Pomni’s heart sank. She only heard the village talk about the prince, his recklessness and pranks and all that, but was this how the upper crust talked about him? He probably had to spend every day with these types of people coming into the castle, did he hear every bit of it in the hallways?
“What else do we expect from an orphan bastard,” the second man sneered, “Only taken in because the royal family felt pity for him. Only one with peasant blood could act so foolishly.”
Pomni saw red. That was the final straw. To think so lowly of someone just because they had no blood relation to royalty, out of all the things to not like about the prince, that was what they hated the most?! He couldn’t control not being born into status! And each comment that they made was an indirect insult to the king and queen taking in a child from the kindness of their hearts!
In fact, having this knowledge made her understand Jax a little bit more, was this why he acted out the way he did? From hearing these comments all the time? After all, she knew better than anyone about being taken care of by someone with no blood connected to them, she didn’t know if she would even be here today if it wasn’t for Kaufmo.
She glared at the ignorant cluster below her, she wasn’t going to let them get away with this.
She looked up, on the platform next to Moon and Sun’s tightrope, she could see the bucket of water that was typically dumped onto Kaufmo’s head at the beginning of his act. She titled the swing, giving it a bit of momentum before swing over onto the tightrope. She jumped, balancing carefully before tiptoeing over to the platform. She picked up the bucket of water, searched for the group again before dumping the water over them, soaking their clothes and makeup.
They let out ear-piercing screeches, demanding who did this. Pomni jumped back onto her swing, hidden in the shadows as she bit back a giggle. That would teach them a lesson for their vile little words.
She froze when she heard a throat clear, looking back behind the tent, she saw Kaufmo with his arms crossed while frowning. Damn it, he saw what she did.
“Uh…the water was dirty?” she gave him a nervous laugh.
His face didn’t move a muscle. Oh I’m in big trouble “I’m sorry Pa.”
There was so much smoke.
So much fire.
She couldn’t breathe, the smoke was too much.
There was no one there.
Where did everyone go?
She couldn’t be alone.
She can’t be alone.
“Ma!”
There was no answer.
No body
No life.
“Ma where are you?!”
Pomni woke in a cold sweat. She took in her surroundings, she was in the inn, sleeping after another show. She wasn’t a five-year-old girl anymore, she wasn’t stuck in a burning town with faded memories. She was here, she was safe.
She rubbed her face, the nightmares would always change, but they would never become dreams and they would never go away. There had been nights while she was more than willing to sacrifice her sleep, but it only resulted in passing out during the middle of the day. Nothing but a viscous cycle that she couldn’t escape from.
She contemplated getting her guitar out, but she didn’t want to risk waking anyone. She hated it when she got like this, she was nothing but a burden that everyone else was forced to carry. She was weak and stupid and a coward and-
Smash!
She screamed when the glass of her window smashed, a hooded figure climbing in with a knife and rope.
Pomni’s stomach sank. No, no I can’t go back.
She reached under her pillow, pulling out a knife of her own. The hooded man came forward to hit her, she blocked his attack and kicked him away. He let out a yell as he was pushed back. Pomni jumped off the bed as he began to stand back up, slashing her knife on her arms every time he lunged to her.
She raised her knife again, only for her door to be kicked down by another figure. They grabbed her arms, forcing her to drop the knife. The first stranger handed the rope to his associate as they reached into their pockets for something else. “Thought you had her under control,” the second figure spat.
“Don’t blame me,” the first one retorted, “Caine didn’t say how much of a spitfire she was.”
The name sent a shiver down Pomni’s spine. “Help! Somebody hel-” her cries were cut off when the first figure wrapped a gag around her mouth, muffling her screams.
“The pay before make up for this,” the second growled, “I got every mind to cut this little bitch’s fingers off.”
“Easy, Caine said he wanted her in one piece,” the first told him, “Just keep your eyes on the prize and we’ll be fine.”
Pomni heard more screams and crashes coming from outside her room. The others, they were in danger to. She tried to escape from her captor’s hold, but they were too strong as they wrapped the rope around her wrists and dragged out of the room.
She paled as she saw the rest of the circus crew being dragged out of their rooms, with staff members of the inn trying to stop them. In the midst of the ruckus, her captors managed to drag her away and outside into the pouring rain. The first figure pulled him onto his horse, with the second one hoisting Pomni behind him.
“Remember,” the second one spoke, “Meet Caine in the middle of the woods, that’s where he’s doing the pick-up.”
“Don’t need to tell me twice,” the first nodded, whipping his reigns and taking off.
Pomni could only struggle as she watched the inn grow smaller and smaller, while her heart spiked and panic washed over her.
She can’t be a prisoner again.
She can’t let that happen.
She won’t let that happen.
.
.
.
The royal family was awoken in the middle of the night, an emergency was afoot and it needed their full attention.
Jax rubbed sleep from his eyes as he followed his parents into the throne room. This had better be good if he was rudely awoken.
“Your majesties,” a guard bowed, “The innkeeper has requested immediate help, her inn is under attack.”
The fur on Jax’s neck stood, that’s where Pomni was.
“Word has it that they call themselves the gloinks, a group of bounty hunters that has raided many kingdoms before,” the guard continued, “We managed to send over as many as we could to arrest them and they managed to intervene before anyone was hurt. But one already got away with a victim.”
No, no, no, no, no, no. Please don’t tell me its-
“They took the jester from the circus.”
Jax was numb, the rest of the world falling silent.
From the corner of his eye, he could see his parents worrying and giving out instructions of what to do. But Jax? He already had a plan. Get Pomni back.
And so, he ran.
“Jax!” Kinger yelled out to him, “Jax!”
“Jax where are you going?!” Queenie shouted.
He ignored them, he had to. Someone kidnapped Pomni, and they were going to pay.
He ran all the way to the stables, pulling a nearby coat off the rack as he took out his horse. He didn’t bother with a saddle, he had ridden plenty of times without one. Maybe he would get in trouble for disobeying his parents later, but he didn’t care. What mattered right now was Pomni’s safety.
He took hold off his horse’s mane as he took off, running out of the stables and towards the gate.
“Open the gate!” he shouted to whoever was there.
At his command, they opened.
“Come on boy,” he told his horse, “We gotta go!”
The horse galloped faster and faster, running past the gates and into the town.
He had to pick up the pace, Pomni’s captor was probably reaching the edge of the village. There was one thing he knew, tonight, he was getting Pomni back.
.
.
.
Pomni struggled with her binds, her kidnapper’s horse was starting to near the forest. She couldn’t go back to Caine, not when freedom was at her grasp. She closed her eyes and focused, blue mist levitating from her hands. She focused on the knot on the rope, letting the mist carefully pull it out. It took time and patience, but she managed to get it to slip out.
She pulled the rope off, taking the gag off and was about to jump off the horse when an arm grabbed her. “Oh no you don’t!” her captor growled, “You ain’t getting away that easily!”
“I’m not going back!” she screamed, “You can tell Caine to go fuck himself!”
She raised a hand, scratching him in the face, leaving behind three bleeding streaks across his skin. “You stupid cunt!” he screamed.
He struck Pomni across the face. The momentum sending her off the horse, hitting the back of her head on a rock. “Fuck!” he jumped off, going over to her, “Shit, Caine’s gonna kill me!”
“Not before I kill you first.”
A fist grabbed the back of the captor’s hood, and he met the striking yellow and furious eyes of Prince Jax. He swore death was staring right back at him.
Jax used his other hand to grab the captor by the throat, lifting him above the ground. Jax grinned as he watched writhe in pain, scratching at his hands for air. He felt no mercy for this son of a bitch, he put his filthy hands on Pomni. He was going to pay. He slammed the captor against a tree, his head collecting with the trunk as he passed out. Jax threw him to the ground, he would deal with him later. There were more important matters at hand.
“Pomni!” he rushed over to her, kneeling to the ground and putting her head on his lap. When he pulled his hand away, his heart twisted as the sight of blood on his fingertips. Carefully lifting her head, he saw a nasty gash bleeding in the back of her head. He had to get her to a healer and fast. He pulled his jacket off, tearing off a sleeve and wrapped it round her add, making sure it applied pressure to the wound and ceased the bleeding.
He slid his arms under her waist and back, pulling her into his embrace and let her head rest on his shoulder as he stood. He carried her over to his horse, lifting them both up as he cradled her. He could see the rest of the guards coming, they could deal with her captor. For now, Pomni needed medical attention.
Without missing a beat, his horse tore off back to the castle, Jax keeping one hand on his mane and the other wrapped around Pomni to steady her. “Come on boy, come on!” he grunted, the horse snorting back as he ran as fast as he could.
Relief flooded him the moment the castle gates were in sight, opening at the first sight of the prince. Jax jumped off the horse as he slowed to a spot, keeping Pomni in his arms as he ran to the doors of the castle.
The guards positioned outside immediately opening the doors once they saw the royal and the injured jester, not wasting a moment so he could get her inside.
“Medic! I need a medic!” Jax yelled out, running up the marbled stairs.
The servants rushed out at the sound of the prince’s voice, gasping at the sight of Pomni and led them both quickly to a guest room.
Jax gently lay her on the plush bed, a few maids rushing over with bowls of water and towels. “She hit her head,” he told them, “I tried to add pressure to stop the blood but I’m not sure if it did enough.”
He unwrapped the makeshift bandage, tossing it aside before grabbing one of the wet towels to press it against the wound. A maid took it from him, pressing against it instead. He didn’t want to stand there doing nothing, Pomni was hurt and he was hanging around like a useless fly. “Blankets, do we have blankets?!” he turned to another servant, fear and desperation in his eyes.
They must’ve noticed, for they didn’t waste time pointing to a nearby cupboard. Jax rushed over, pulling out every blanket he could find and placed it on Pomni’s shivering body. “Hang in there Pomni,” his hands began to shake, there was more blood. He couldn’t lose her, not after treating her the way he did. His mother was right, now he was paying the price.
A doctor rushed in, medical bag in hand and ready to get to work. Jax’s stomach flipped when he heard Pomni letting out a whimper in her unconscious state. “Be careful with her!” he growled.
He felt a hand pulling him back by the shoulder, he flinched, shoving it away, only to soften that it was his father with his mother behind him. “Pomni is in good with hands with the doctor,” Kinger placed his hand back on Jax’s shoulder, “You got her here in time, let him do his work.”
“I can’t do nothing,” Jax interrupted, “Not when she’s hurt like this! I have to, I need to-”
“Ma,”
Everyone turned to the voice. Pomni wasn’t awake, but a tear slid down her cheek as she shifted in her slumber. “Ma,” her voice cracked, “Ma I’m stuck. Where are you?”
Jax’s heart shattered into a million pieces. Seeing and hearing Pomni so vulnerable, stripped of the glam and sass she wore, leaving behind a broken and frightened person instead. It made the guilt ten times worse. He felt himself sway, his head was pounding and his heart was threatening to burst out of his chest from how hard it was beating. Queenie immediately noticed, already wrapping her arms around her son and led him to a cushioned chair in the corner of the room.
“Pomni, she needs my help, she…” he murmured.
“Shh, it’s okay, you’ve done enough,” Queenie reassured him, running a hand over his ears, “Rest, she’s going to be okay.”
Jax wanted to protest, to insist that he was fine, to be by Pomni’s side. But the promise of sleep was too strong to ignore. And so, he shut his eyes. He’d wake up later, then he would help Pomni.
.
.
.
Kaufmo couldn’t stop trembling. When the inn was under attack, he was roughly grabbed out of his bed and shoved against a wall, leaving him with a bleeding forehead and a black eye. The blood was ringing in his ears and his vision was blurred, but what he did notice was Pomni screaming and tied up as she was dragged away.
He wanted to reach out for her, to give hell to those who hurt his kid, but the pain was too much and his attacker was too strong to escape from. Just hearing the cries of his family, and the fear of…him finding them. It was too much.
He thanked whatever god was up there when the palace guards came, saving them from the gloinks. But it was short-lived, with Pomni being the first thing on his mind. Out of everyone in the circus, it was his kid who had the highest bounty on her head.
He nearly cried when the news of Pomni being safe at the castle arrived to him, but what shocked him was who saved her. Prince Jax. Never in all his days did he think that the arrogant prince would care for anyone’s wellbeing other than his own. Nevertheless, Pomni was Kaufmo’s first priority, he wanted to get to the castle as soon as possible.
And this was where he stood now, in the throne room with the rest of the circus behind him, all praying for Pomni to be okay. The king and queen trekked into the room, Kaufmo running as soon as he saw them. “Where’s Pomni? What happened to her? Is she okay?” tears were streaming down his face, but he didn’t care, his kid was all that mattered.
“It’s okay,” Queenie spoke, “Pomni is safe, she hit her head but we had a doctor attend to her and she is recovering in a guest room.”
Kaufmo let out a giant sigh of relief. All tension leaving him the second the news was told to him. Pomni was okay, they got to her in time.
“However it does leave a question,” Kinger said, his tone serious and avoid of any other emotion, “Why were the gloinks targeting Pomni directly? What’s going on with you all?”
Kaufmo paled, the rest of the circus matching his expression. They had a feeling that after what happened, this question would arise. After all, this wasn’t a normal attack. The gloinks were infamous for their bounty hunting, always demanding the highest pay for whoever that had to go after. So why go after a simple jester?
“Kaufmo?” Ragatha walked towards him, placing a hand on his back, a silent question if he really wanted to get into this mess.
“It’s okay, they have to know,” Kaufmo took a breath to prepare himself, he could so this. “Our circus wasn’t always like this, and I wasn’t always the ringmaster. Many years ago, I wanted to be a clown for my whole life. Performing in a circus was always my dream. But no matter who I went to, they would never hire me. I was going to give up until I met a man named Caine. He was starting a circus of his own and he had everything, except a clown. He practically hired me on the spot, I was so excited that I was willing to look past any warning that were blaring.
It was fine at first, the audience liked my jokes, it was good pay and I got to travel all over the land. However, after a year of being there, I was ready to go home and see my family. But when I tried to leave, that was when I saw Caine’s true colours. The moment I stepped out of that tent, I was attacked by Caine’s hunters. It was then when I learned that no one could leave, and even if you tried, Caine would send his men after you. Either you get attacked, but if you attempted to leave multiple times…I know many members who chose death rather than stay.”
“That’s how Caine tricks people,” Moon spoke up, “He offered me a home for me and my brother. I even fell in love with him. But when I saw what he was doing, I tried to get help. I made it about three feet before his hunters came after me.”
“He said he would help my family,” Ragatha rubbed her arm nervously, “We were poor and he said he would pay for anything as long as I stayed in the circus. I haven’t seen my family in five years.”
“I wanted to run away with the circus, escape from the harm that was in my town,” Gangle sniffed, Zooble wrapped an arm around her, “I never thought how much worse it could get.”
“It went on like that for so long,” Kaufmo continued. “For years we were nothing but puppets for Caine as he fed off our talents. If we weren’t sleeping, we were either rehearsing or performing. And if we showed the slightest sign of fatigue, he’d unleash his fury on us. It only got worse when Pomni arrived. Pomni…I’ll let her tell her story. But she was the youngest out of all of us. She was five when Caine stole her. I took her under my wing, protecting her from Caine. But Pomni was different than the rest of us, her talents are…unique to say the least. It was what attracted audiences however, and as long as Pomni had that power, there was no way Caine was ever going to let her go.
“That was where I came in,” Zooble spoke up. “When the circus arrived in my area, I already had my suspicions. That was when I met Gangle, she told me what happened and I knew I couldn’t do nothing. So I came up with a plan to get them out. I would pretend that I wanted to be in Caine’s show while trying to get everyone out. It took a few buddies of mine and some help from my village, but it worked.”
“We managed to get the enforcers of the town and alert them of what was happening and then managed to detain Caine…at least for a while,” Kaufmo’s face fell. “A while ago, we heard news that Caine had managed to escape, but what really scared us the most was that he didn’t want any of us. Just Pomni. She was irreplaceable, so we’ve been on the run ever since. As long as Caine’s out there, none of us are free.”
Queenie and Kinger stood there, shellshock keeping them frozen in place. How could anyone react any differently to that information?! They wanted to so badly to ask about Pomni, but they knew that they shouldn’t pry her story from others. It was hers and only hers to share. “I appreciate you telling us this, I can’t imagine what you all have gone through,” Queenie told them, nothing but kindness and sincerity in her tone.
“Rest assured,” Kinger straightened up, “We will do everything in our power to make sure Caine doesn’t come near you ever again.”
“But how?!” Kaufmo cried out, “We’ve done everything in our power to get rid of him and he still manages a way to find us! We’re lucky to be alive at this point!”
“Believe my husband and I when I say that Caine will not get away with these crimes,” Queenie informed them. “For your safety, including Pomni’s, we advise you to stay within the castle walls under Caine is no longer a threat. Our soldiers are highly trained to deal with these types of threats. Worry not, your freedom is going to be granted soon.”
Kaufmo opened his mouth and closed it. Freedom? Was it really that possible for him? Would his daughter finally be rid of that monster? Maybe he was getting his hopes up, but by the end of the day, it was still hope. And as long as Pomni was safe, he would take it. “Thank you, your majesties, thank you,” Kaufmo shuddered, feeling a sense of happiness he hadn’t felt in a long time.”
“Of course,” Kinger nodded, “Once Pomni has arisen, we’ll let you see her. As for now, we’ll have your belongings transferred over to the castle. Please, breathe, you are all safe here.”
The circus members looked to one another, was it really possible? Would they finally have a life without fear? All they knew was one thing, as long as Caine didn’t get his hands on Pomni, then they could all finally breathe.
.
.
.
Pomni stirred lightly, her head thundering with pain. She was half tempted to go back to sleep, this bed was the softest she had ever slept in. She eyes shot open, the bed at the inn wasn’t normally this soft. When the bleariness cleared, she could see that she was laid upon the most luxurious sheets she had ever slept in, along with sleek silky pillows that cooled the heat rising upon her flushed skin. As her eyes travelled, they landed upon red wallpaper with embroidered gold stems and leaves, her gaze drifted to the side as she spied some type of curtains tied to each side of the bed.
She lifted herself up into a sitting position, ignoring her throbbing head as she took in more of her surroundings. She was still wondering how she got here, in fact, her memories were just as fuzzy in her. Then, in a flash, it came back to her.
The nightmares.
The break in.
The cries of her family.
The fear of seeing Caine.
The agony of her head hitting the rock…
And then Jax was there. His touch soft and his voice gentle as he lifted her and carried her back to the castle. Jax…saved me.
Pomni turned, gasping faintly as she saw the prince in a chair next to her. The castle she realised to herself I’m in the castle. Jax’s head was resting on the side of the bed as his breathing evenly flowed in and out. She smiled a bit, he looked so innocent like this. Stripped of his brashness and confidence, a small glimpse of Jax was peeking out to her. She was half tempted to brush her fingers through the fur of his ears, but quickly decided against that. He was a prince for goodness’ sake, how improper would that be.
She flinched at the sound of small pattering feet. She had a feeling she was safe due to the heavy protection surrounding the castle, but even that couldn’t keep the nerves at bay. She held the blankets closer to her, as though they would act as some sort of shield. All that worry melted away into awe once she saw the sweet brown eyes of a kitten starting up at her as he wandered into the room.
“Aw!” she cooed, “Hi little kitty!”
The kitten meowed, his tail wagging slowly as he made his way over to the jester. Pomni patted the bed, gesturing for the feline to come up. His claws caught into the sheets, making his way up until he joined Pomni on the mattress. Unable to resist, she scooped his up into her arms, with the little kitten rubbing his head against her cheek as he purred. “You’re just the sweetest little thing, aren’t you?” she scratched behind his ears.
Mew
She pressed a small kiss on his nose, he was just so cute!
Unbeknownst to the duo, the movement and noise that they were making made the prince stir a bit.
Jax let out a low grumble, the back of his neck aching after sleeping in this horrible position. But he didn’t want to leave Pomni’s side for a moment. Just in case she woke up or something happened to her in her sleep. No, he had to be here. Even if he resigned himself to sleep in a terrible way, Pomni mattered more.
He could feel something move next to him, along with the sound of coos and tiny meows. Wait a minute, he recognised those meows. He straightened up immediately, ignoring the neck ache. Pomni jumped at how quickly got up, hugging Motley closer to her.
“You’re awake!” Jax’s mouth split into a relieved grin, “Are you okay, nothing hurts does it? Do you need anything? Another blanket, water?”
Pomni blinked with confusion at the prince’s many questions. He seemed so…sweet? He did save her life, but still, seeing this side of him was so jarring. “Um, I’m fine thanks,” she smiled awkwardly.
He ran to the door, not wanting to waste a single moment longer, “Doctor! She’s awake!”
It wasn’t long before the doctor came in, checking her over and making sure she was alright, informing her about her extended stay in the castle and the search for Caine. However, all her focus seemed to be on Jax. When the doctor asked for a cool towel for her flushed face, Jax was eager to fetch it. When a breeze through the window made her shiver, he was quick to close it. And when the maid was setting up a tray of breakfast for her, Jax dropped everything to help her. Even the servants and doctors seemed perplexed by his behaviour. What happened to the mischievous prince who made sure to make his crudeness his reputation?
When the buzz died down, the doctor informed Pomni to stay in bed and that he would fetch her family.
Her family. They were safe, it relieved some tension that she didn’t even know she had. It was when Jax turned to leave that she did something that puzzled both of them. “Wait!” she called out. The prince turned back, did she want him to stay? “I-I just…why did you save me?”
Jax was taken aback by that question, staring at her as though the answer was obvious, “I couldn’t just let them take you. Bounty hunters invaded my kingdom and kidnapped one of our visitors. Besides, you hold value to your family and circus. They need you in their lives.”
“R-right, well what I wanted to say was…thank you,” her smile made his heart turn to melted gold. So soft yet so delicate and beautiful. It was burned into the prince’s memory.
“Y-you’re welcome Pomni,” Jax stuttered, sitting himself back down on the chair. He gulped, not once in his life did he get so tongue-tied over another person. It was certainly an interesting feeling to say the least. “And I should apologise for sending you those gifts and the announcement in the town square. Please believe me when I say that I didn’t aim to make you uncomfortable. How does my mother put it? My heart can be bigger than my brain sometimes. But I’m sorry that you had to witness it.”
It was Pomni’s turn to be taken aback. She had never heard words so genuine and sincere, especially with it coming from someone she always saw as pompous and crude. She cleared her throat, “I appreciate the apology your highness. It may take me a while to fully forgive you, but you’ve made a good start already.”
“Jax,” he said.
She hummed questioningly.
“Call me Jax,” he clarified.
“Oh! Well, thank you Jax,” she ran her fingers along the kitten’s fur, listening to him purr to fill the pleasant silence.
“Ah, I see you met Motley,” Jax poked the feline’s nose.
“Motley?” Pomni tilted her head.
“My cat,” he clarified.
Pomni let out a gasp, excitement washing over her. “This is your cat?!” she beamed, holding the kitten up to her face, “He’s adorable.” She pressed little kisses over his small face, Motley purring louder at the affection.
Jax grumbled, ignoring the twinge of jealously, “He’s an obnoxious little shit.”
Pomni scoffed at him, “No he’s not! He’s a sweet little gentleman.”
“He broke in here and decided that this place was gonna be his home,” Jax retorted back, “I didn’t get a say in the matter.”
“But how could you say no to this cute face?” Pomni held Motley closer to Jax’s face, the kitten pressing a paw to the prince’s nose.”
“He’s quite…persuading. But you won’t like him when he’s taking a bath, trust me,” Jax said.
Pomni rolled her eyes, cuddling the kitten again. Jax smiled softly, it was sweet to see her bonding with Motley, after what happened she could use this little interaction to help lift her spirits.
They paused for a moment, Jax letting Pomni take small bites of her breakfast while he prepared some tea for her. He had requested chamomile from the maids, it was what helped him for whenever he had a sick day and he hoped it would help Pomni as well. Once Pomni’s plate was cleared, he gently put the mug in her hands and took away the breakfast tray. She hummed appreciatively at the warm drink, watching Jax’s carefully stack everything together and taking it to the door. It was quite the sight to see, a prince waiting beck and call for a commoner. But she wasn’t complaining, it was rather comforting to be taken care of.
Throughout the silence, simple questions being traded back and forth between the two. “So tell me, how do you know so much about flowers?” Jax asked, “You know, after my abysmal attempt of trying to give some to you.”
Pomni laughed, it was quite funny looking back at it now, “My ma-…my family always loved flowers, they taught me everything there was to know about them. My favourite was always roses, it might be cliché but there are so many meanings to come out of one flower depending on the colour.”
“I see,” Jax murmured, even the smallest thing about Pomni meant the world to him. She was just so fascinating.
“And you,” Pomni spoke, “What is your favourite pastime?”
“Well…I have a passion for reading,” he told her, “Ever since I was young I’ve always had a fondness for books about adventures and swashbuckling pirates! Every page was a new journey and I wanted to devour it all! I wanted to live that life more than ever.”
“That does sound amazing,” she mused, “I haven’t been to a library in so long…” she trailed off. Jax’s face fell slightly, reaching his hand out to her. Pomni noticed the sudden change in mood and smiled again, “But it’s alright, I’m sure I will one day.”
Jax nodded, keeping her sentence locked in his mind. He’d have to come back to that later.
Pomni bit her lip, another question had been burning at the back of her mind and it had made her more curious than she thought she should be. She turned to Jax, “I have to ask, why did you want to see me so badly? What did I do that made you so infatuated?”
Jax blinked, resting his arms on his legs as he clasped his hands together. He took a breath, his face serious as he answered her, “I know it might sound ridiculous, and you’re allowed to laugh. But in all honesty, it was your voice.”
Pomni perked up, her eyes wide, “My voice?”
“Yeah,” Jax nodded, “The moment you started singing, I just wanted to know more about you. You were telling a story simply through song, but you were only telling the first chapter. I got impatient and wanted to read more. From the first note, I knew that there was more to you that I had to know. I just…didn’t go about it the right way at first.” He let out a nervous chuckled, only to freeze when he saw a tear slide down her cheek. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you!”
“No, no, you didn’t,” she let out a choked laugh, wiping the tear away, “In fact, you said exactly what I needed to hear.”
Motley rubbed his head against her arm, offering as much comfort as possible. Jax placed his hand on hers, “Pomni, if I act or say anything stupid just say the word. I don’t know if you can tell, but I’m a massive idiot.”
Pomni giggled, her face twisting into one of mock surprise, “Really, I had no idea!”
Jax rolled his eyes fondly, “Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up short stack.”
She snorted, about to say another word when the room was suddenly flooded by the circus members. Each one of them fretting over her and checking if she was okay. “Guys! I’m fine!” she reassured them, Motley scrambling out of the crowd and ran over to Jax.
The rabbit picked him up, giving the circus cast their space as they reunited with Pomni. “You scared me to death kiddo!” Kaufmo squeezed her, “I thought they got you!”
“I’m okay Pa,” she rested her head on his shoulder, “I gave them a piece of my mind before Jax saved me.”
Kaufmo froze, slowly turning to the prince. “You saved my kid?” he asked.
Jax gulped, he still hadn’t forgotten the clown’s terrifying threat, “Yes?”
Kaufmo hummed in thought, it seemed that he judged the prince a bit too harshly. But only a little bit, he didn’t regret chewing him out. “Thank you, your highness,” he gave Jax a simple bow, “It’s good to know that our safety is taken seriously by you.”
“O-of course,” Jax stuttered. He had fought and won battles against much more frightening opponents, how did a clown seem worse than that?
Kaufmo turned his attention back to Pomni, running his hand over her wound and cringing at the sight. He sat on the bed next to Pomni, the girl leaning into her father’s hug as the rest of the circus members watched over them.
Jax decided to take this as a que to leave and give them their privacy. He was just about to head out the room when he was stopped by Pomni’s voice, “Jax!”
He paused, turning back to her.
“Thank you, again,” Pomni smiled at him, “For what you did.”
Jax grinned, feeling a sense of pride fill him. But it wasn’t the usual arrogance he’d come to expect, there was a warmth to it, and a flutter of butterflies in his stomach. Holding Motley in one arm, he gave the jester a bow, “Always. If you’d like, once you’ve recovered, I could give you a tour of the castle?”
“I’d like that,” Pomni nodded.
And with that, Jax took his leave, fully aware of the stabbing glares of Kaufmo, Moon and Ragatha on his back, never did he expect to feel such danger from a circus crew.
Pomni bit her lip shyly, fisting the sheets below her hands before looking up to meet Gangle’s giddy smile and Zooble’s teasing gaze. “So, you got yourself a date with the prince huh?” Zooble chortled.
“S-shut up!” Pomni threw a pillow at him, making them laugh harder. She sighed, that prince really wormed himself into her heart, didn’t he?
How would the companions react to seeing a pre-war picture of Sole (maybe a wedding photo?) and realizing Sole lost a lot of weight since— and not a healthy amount, like going from muscular to thin?
I imagine Sole rolling their eyes and being overly snarky It's never easy to discuss a person's weight, and having undergone a major weight fluctuation (but rather the reverse) over the last two years, I can attest that when others want to discuss it with us, we do not want looool
That's said, thank you for the fun!
Cait : "Was that really you? You'd have been a powerhouse in the arena! But tell me, how did you lose so much weight?"
"Radiation. All HS cars."
"The…cars?"
"These funny metal carcasses all over the landscape—we used to use them to get from place to place instead of walking in the desert for hours as soon as we were called somewhere."
"Walking! It's true that there's not a lot of fat in the corner. But what about the muscles?"
"Probably the 200-year nap."
"That makes sense."
Codsworth : "At the time, I felt like I was doing a good job taking care of you. I can only watch you melt like snow in the sun now, no matter what I do."
"You've never seen any snow."
"My data strips provide me with precise information. It's comparable to your weight decrease."
"Sliding into enemy camps is easy like this."
"I'll make you a delectable brahmin steak. With mashed tatos. And I think the cook hid some oil in the storage room."
Curie : "It's completely unhealthy to have lost so much body mass index in such a short period of time."
"200 years."
"In so little real time."
"Radioactive food."
"This public health issue must be addressed."
Danse (romanced) : "You were such a juicy piece of meat!" He casts a glance towards Sole, quickly realising his blunder. "Not that you aren't... I mean… Understand that you are perfectly fine as you are, yet regaining some of your prior mass would not be a bad thing. That doesn't imply you're not appealing. I mean…"
"Stop causing yourself pain, Danse. I'm not foolish; I realised that I shed about 100 pounds in the last year... way of speaking."
"But nonetheless... It would be a first to have a soldier who did not require a frame to wear power armor."
"It really wasn't that bad."
"Let them come, super-mutants; I'll have my super-Sole!"
"I never realized how dense you could be."
Deacon : "Have you had any surgery or something? I'd like to see a doctor that can transform someone's shape like that. What's your trick?"
"Radiation? Going for a walk in the desert? Low carbohydrate, high radiation diet?"
"The grand total. I guess I won't be able to compete at that level."
"The Brotherhoods have a weight room—
"Why don’t you use it? You might get a terrifying figure back for a super-mutant!"
"I make use of it."
"I believe I've been asked to the headquarters."
Dogmeat : Doesn’t even know what it’s about. Sniffs around and doesn’t pay attention to the picture on the wall.
Elder Maxson (romanced) : "We need more soldiers of this size. Have you considered trying to restore that lost mass?"
"Lack of butter in the corner."
"Of what, exactly? Still, I'm going to ask Cade to take a closer look at you; you can't be in this condition because of something healthy."
"Does my condition bother you?"
"Not at all," he strategically retreated, realising his mistake.
Hancock (romanced) : "No way, it ain't you." He gets a good dose of Jet and details the picture better. "Them eyes. Yeah, I think I can see. The peepers are identical. Damn, you were a whole snack. What's the sitch?"
"War, bombs, the current Commonwealth, lack of food, the never-ending race to stay alive, lack of sleep, lack of food, running—
"OK, I get it. If you ever decide to lounge in Goodneighbor for good, I got you - no more running and you can grub all you want. I'd damn myself to get my hands on those love handles."
Gage : "I've seen what hunger and drugs can do to a human being, but this is the brightest example."
"I don't take that many drugs."
"Enough to lose, oh, what, 100 pounds?"
"And it has nothing to do with walking a thousand miles through the desert with only a piece of dry meat in your pocket for any meal."
"I'll speak with Mason. He can give his Overboss his meat weight. We’ll round those calves right up."
"I'd almost be offended. Did you ever wonder whether it was my wish?"
"Look at that!" With the back of his palm, he hits the portrait. "That's you, Overboss!"
"Okay, this time I'm being insulted."
MacCready : "So, people used to be really spoiled, huh?"
"Yeah, a little. Radiation-free steak, buttered potatoes, and a car for long journeys."
"Car? These things were long trips? How much long?"
"How far can you imagine a distance?"
"The farthest I know is the Capital Wasteland."
"A few hours' drive."
"Wow, okay, but we don't get to the capital every day."
"It took me eight hours to get from Sanctuary to Diamond City... with a piece of dry meat and a bottle of hot water. Not exactly the best diet for mounting a titan frame."
"Well, the muscles are still there; they're just... dry."
Nick (romanced) : He spends so much time in front of the picture that Sole becomes concerned.
"Nick?"
"It's sad..."
"What exactly is sad?"
"You looked so joyful and good in that photograph. And all that, all that mess."
"You know, I can't deny everything I've gained since."
"However, it wouldn't hurt to regain some forms. The Brobovs, you know, don't just serve bad booze; they also have a fine menu, and the butcher provides them with good meat for the chefs. You should go there more frequently."
"Caps, Nick. Caps."
"So, from time to time, we'll take a break from our investigations to go hunting. It will not be said that you will remain skeletal in my custody if we can do otherwise."
Piper : "Are you kidding me? It can't possibly be you. Is it?"
"It is."
"But you were so... How could that have happened?"
"Radiation, starvation, and constant walking through the desert."
"Damn you. Perhaps we should write an article to distinguish healthy lifestyles from those who—
"It's getting really cliché, the way you always look for an article to write about everything."
"Eh! I'm not always looking for new subjects to write about."
"You asked a settler about his impressions of radiation storms!"
"It is critical to take the pulse of the people. But first, let's get back to our radsheeps and your...weight loss."
"Subject closed."
"Sooooole!"
"Subject.Closed."
Preston : "That's a significant weight loss."
"A little, yeah."
"And all in less than a year? It’s almost incredible that you’re in shape."
"Fit enough to have pulled you out of the clutches of the raiders when we first met."
Preston smiles slightly as he recalls this incident. Then he removes the frame from the wall.
"This goes straight to the castle vaults."
"Have you ever heard of the concept of private property?"
"History has no private property, and this picture is now part of the Minutemen's history."
"But do so without hesitation," Sole says, hardly masking his annoyance.
Strong : "Puny human not so puny back then."
"No, I wasn't at all."
"Why not stronger?"
"Aaaaah, that's a long story."
"Boring. Eat well. Eat more. Stronger, like before."
"I'll give it a shot..."
X6-88 : "It's incredible that Father's parent were so... well-developed. Specifically observing you today."
"I'm not sure if that's meant to be a compliment or an insult."
"A statement. Certainly, your former self had physical characteristics worth highlighting."
"I'm still not sure if it's a compliment or an insult."
"What I'm saying is that a physical threat like that would require significantly less protection. In what circumstances did you evolve into... that?"
With a dismissive gesture, he indicates Sole's current smaller size.
"All right, I get it now. That is an insult. You won't get an explanation just for the sake of it."
X6 sighs. "As you like. Now that we have squandered sufficient time contemplating the remnants of the past, it's appropriate for us to continue on towards our current objective."
"Crime: An Aoyagi." Detective Akito x Cyber Killer Toya au.
Chapter 1: "Uncomfortable Encounter."
A loud sigh grumbled within the bedroom as the detective reclined back against his chair. He rubbed his forehead as distress heated up his body, and with a final decision, he decided to hit his bed. He was tired after all; he'd been working on a project since the dawn of last weekend. The case of "An Aoyagi" had been haunting him every moment. That was the name of the incidents that had been attracting more people to the newspapers and public talks about this subject, and it is also the subject that had the ginger detective stressing out on. The first heinous crime had been reported on January 31st, 2030, one that had no leads. It had since been handed over to the detective, Akito Shinonome. This case had brought a heavy burden on Akito, as normally, it wouldn't take him long to uncover new evidence about a case. Yet, this case really had no answers, despite being a direct murder. Nothing about the case pointed to anyone, and hardly anyone knew of the victim and could not provide much about him or his life. The night passed quickly.
As another day came, Akito groaned as his alarm clock rang out on his nightstand. He rose to turn it off and sat up on his bed. He stood up and rubbed an eye before walking directly to his bathroom. Doing his daily routine  of showering, brushing his teeth, washing his face, and shaving, he had prepared himself for the day.
When he stepped out, he glanced at his phone and took it off of the charger to take it with him. It was 5:10 am in the morning and he planned to start by getting a morning snack at a café. Akito slipped on a warm outfit suited for the cool dawn, grabbing a handbag as he left his house.
The café's doorbell rang as he pulled the door open. The café was really packed for the morning; almost every table was full. Yet Akito still found a place to sit down, grabbing a menu from the table's side. As he examined the menu, choosing what would help his morning’s spiritless feeling, he found himself dozing off for a few moments. Someone approached his table from the side. Akito assumed it was someone passing by a little too closely, but this person suddenly sat down opposite him.
Before he could focus on the individual that sat in front of him, a soft, patient voice, like a guy who seemed older than the detective, said, "Hello…” speaking out in a monotone voice “Do you mind if I sit here? The other tables are full.".
Upon glancing at the man, he appeared to actually be around Akito's age with a split bi-color hair (a dark blue and a light blue) and gentle gray eyes. Akito found himself weirdly drawn to the man's looks. "His skin looks really pale," Akito whispered to himself.
"Excuse me?" The man with gray eyes tilted his head slightly with a nervous sweat, feeling tense with the silence that Akito left him with.
As the voice spoke, Akito looked up and stared at his face for a while. "Yeah. You can." he said, slightly grumbling to himself, feeling a bit angered about how dazed he was feeling this early in the morning.
"Thank you," the man responded back in a skittish manner. The café was cacophonous, Akito glanced off to the side, then realized the man in front of him had yet to order something. "You gon order anything?" The ginger asked the now calm looking man.
"Oh, I'll just get a black coffee," the paler male said with a gentle smile. Akito placed a hand on his chin, scrunched his eyebrows at the boy's choice of a morning treat, which was rather mundane.
"All right," Akito replied. It was weird to him. Almost all of the people he met weren't so quiet and timid as this guy was. ‘Well, that's how strangers are at first meeting, right?’ he thought to himself, glancing at the man once again. Though there was a lot that just felt empty about the man's presence alone with Akito.
Akito felt himself a little too fixated on the man's appearance, and the gray eyed man seemed to notice Akito's stare as well. Due to the realization, he gulped down some of his saliva. Then, speaking up once again, "You. What's your name?" he decided to ask, trying to start a conversation, instead of sitting in silence with the stranger in front of him."Topo Aragaki," he responded back by playing with his finger with a slightly nervous movement. "And you?" That name sent a slight shiver down Akito's spine, but he couldn't quite place why. His body tensed, and he broke into a cold sweat as he replied, "Akito Shinonome," with a slight smile. The café was noisy, however at that moment, noise seemed to fade away, leaving them with tension. Akito couldn’t describe or identify the feeling he felt because of that name. Though, he decided to just brush it off.
[End of chapter 1.]
