this book: *gets to 70% without more than a hint of any romance between these two and it's mostly lust*
this book: oh by the way the aristocrat is so worried for this slave girl's safety THAT HE BEATS HER TO MAKE HER UNDERSTAND
#LITERALLY#he straight up grabbed her and shook her and shouted at her#and then felt bad about it which “only made him angrier”#AND THEN WHEN HE WASN'T SATISFIED THAT SHE UNDERSTOOD THE DANGER HE HIT HER#and DID NOT REGRET IT#I haven't liked him from the get go and I wasn't at all convinced about any romance ESPECIALLY on her side but THIS?#I'm just ticked off now#I'll accept the odd swift shake to make someone listen (especially if they're hysterical)#but the shoving around and yelling and hitting? no#the master-slave dynamic does NOT help#and the author keeps trying to pull the whole clashing cultures thing like “well for him this is totally normal and acceptable”#ma'am then shoot for grudging respect#not ROMANCE#2023 reading list#mine#(yes I'm also yelling about this in the friend group chat)
