Happy Spooky Month, Pantry Snacks! Are you ready for us to start SH2 Remake in 1 week?! In the mean time, we're continuing to level BLM tonight! We got to level 50 and finished the ARR BLM quests on Sunday, and then off stream I did roulettes and got to level 55! So we'll be starting off tonight's stream with this week's installment of Doman Enclave, where we're now funding the construction of a lighthouse, and then starting the Heavensward BLM job quests! After that, it'll be on to more leveling, joined by Best Mod Zev and other members of the Pantry! Remember, get me to 50 subs and we'll do an EX trial or Savage Raid of the community's Choice! ok my brain's significantly less fried so let's get into it.

i've already said my peace about why i enjoy the leave ending as it is, so i'm not gonna get into that here in full, but i would also argue that its ambiguity is simultaneously its biggest weakness as it is it's biggest strength, and it really depends on your opinion of james and your overall engagement with the narrative of sh2.

sh2 is a game that thrives off of speculation, interpretation, and inference as there is a lot left unanswered and up for debate, and i do think this is on purpose. if you're as fucking crazy as i am about interpretation in the vein of thinking about a possible post-canon for media like sh2, then you have a field day with endings like the leave ending.

now... here's the thing. here's the kicker. the maria ending and the rebirth ending are both open-ended endings that have you infer what is to transpire post-canon, and their presentation within sh2 leaves you with a fairly concrete sense of what is to happen. it doesn't tell you exactly how it happens or when, but you definitely have an idea, and the leave ending is the same way, i would argue, but what it lacks is in buildup (and in some ways, payoff).

the maria ending has the letter read and maria coughing out her lungs and james turning back and coldly saying "you'd better do something about that cough". the rebirth ending has no letter read and has james murmuring sweet nothings to mary's body as he proclaims to her that the old gods will grant him the power to undo her death if he venerates them. and... the leave ending has the letter read with james and laura meandering thru the graveyard after the read stops, and while that's sweet... it doesn't feel earned.

i've really had to morph the leave ending into something that resonates with me. i've mentioned before how i think the leave ending is an in water ending interrupted and how in the post expressing my love for the leave ending, that i think james buries mary in the graveyard with laura present so she can say goodbye, too. none of this is implied within the ending itself, and while i think that's on purpose, it really rides on the notion that you are a fan of james to even entertain such.

james is a divisive character for good reason. i'm not here to defend what he did because that would be ludicrous, and i think the overall notion of laura present with james after all of that with no further contextualization? nothing concrete on james' part to even get laura to accompany him out of silent hill? very happy bookend-y. like i said, there's no buildup. i think the leave ending would be stronger if there were that buildup, for us to be shown james having to work at earning laura's trust, even if it's just for the moment.

it's also funny, too, because i think that james turns himself in post-leave ending because i cannot conceptualize him raising laura on his own without it being bad for her in a myriad of ways. i think james is cognizant enough that he's fucked up royally enough with laura that it would just be better if he was out of her life altogether. that and also he literally committed a crime and he needs to take responsibility for it however he can.

anyways uhhhhh yeah. that's what i think. ✌️👍

post pending about how for as much as i love the leave ending for its open-endedness and overall ambiguity and hopefulness, i find its that presentation- juxtaposed with the other endings present within sh2 that are also open-ended and up to interpretation- to be the weakest ending overall and that needs a lot of outside interpretation in order for it to be as solid of an ending as it is in my head
