Palestinian embroidery, or “tatreez”, is a cultural practice that dates back to the Canaanites some 3000 years ago— a labor of love that we still see coming out of Palestine and the Palestinian diaspora today. Prior to the occupation, tatreez was used to signify things like where a person was from, their marital status, and their economic status using a variety of region specific symbols as well as various colors. Tatreez has in recent decades been used by Palestinians both in Palestine and the diaspora as a form of resistance against Israel’s attempt at wiping out and/or appropriating Palestinian history and culture.
