At the end of the day who’re you gonna trust?

Just thinking about how Splasher, the youngest of the newsies other than Les, the one who says that papers is all he’s got, is shown being closest to Buttons and Tommy Boy. Who are the boys who scab before Seize the Day? Buttons, Tommy Boy, and Splasher.

This little boy is like 10 at most. He’s got very little idea what’s going on. But the two boys he’s most likely to call brothers are still going in to sell papes? Then he’s going to as well because he trusts they have his best interests in mind.

And then Buttons joins the strike. And Splasher does too. And so does Tommy Boy. And Splasher is so excited he can’t stop jumping around because he’s surrounded by his family who will always protect him.

Then the moment the adults show up, Splasher runs to the police officer, expecting them to help. Children are taught to trust the police, and what happens? Splasher gets knocked out by him.

This is a long winded way of me saying Splasher has trust issues and latches into Buttons and Tommy Boy for dear life because all the trusted adults in his life have let him down.
