multi-parter epica thing. thought about it while i was making my albums of the year list.

so epica was like, a top-tier symphonic metal band in the 00s. you had nightwish starting to tarnish (then really going whole hog), kamelot entering their fan favorites era, and epica was really chewing the fuck out of the scenery. 2007’s the divine conspiracy is, god, top 2 symphonic metal albums of all time for me.

and then the 2010s hit??

so the thing about epica is that their sound is relatively stable for the genre. there are a couple of reasons for this: the simplest is that they don’t have the insane level of vocalist turnover that a lot of other symphonic metal bands have (hello nightwish, xandria, sirenia), so they never had to scramble to accomodate a new vocalist. they obviously have evolved in both sound and concept over time, but like… from album to album, you’re not going to get something like, i don’t know. like century child or neverworld’s end. 2012’s requiem for the indifferent (apposite. i am indifferent to this album) is, i think, the big obvious sea change in epica’s catalogue: thematically, they depart from their typical Organized Religion Bad Real Bad But Because We’re White Lib Europeans We’ve Got A Lot To Say About Islam In Particular (which does produce some mindbendingly awesome music, regrettably, e.g. the whole divine conspiracy). their sound gets more… ambitious, maybe, on this album? any symphonic metal worth its salt is ambitious (i was going to say it all is, by nature, then i remembered serenity and apocalyptica and decided against that). this is their first album with keyboard solos, which are one of my least favorite features of epica’s 10s catalogue— they just never really do anything for me, especially as they coincide with epica’s growing capacity to do these big ol’ symphonic numbers: you get a lot of songs that seem like the result of an embarrassment of musical riches.

i don’t really have much to say about this album. it literally made next to no impact on me. i’m listening to it rn and i remember it (at least, i’m in the front half now and i remember that), but it has no draw on me. the drum mixing feels super inconsistent— i think it’s because i liked it a lot on omega alive (where it is quite loud and prominent but also like, crisp and well-placed) that i’m hearing this and wondering why it sounds like the drums are all over the place. like, ok, near the end of monopoly on truth you get this really standout belted bit from simone (carry me slowly in the depths of your life!!!) where the already quite aggressive drums nearly drown her out as the instrumental gets pared back. i know a lot of the Simone Simons Bad Vocalist slander comes from live performances, but i do wonder how much of it begins with production choices like this, where specifically powerful vocal moments get drowned out or brought down against a backdrop choral arrangement. and there are some cool vocal moments! simone is really moving out of the affected classical/operatic style she had in the 00s, which i know is controversial among purported epica fans, but i think her voice sounds dope. there’s a cool moment on storm the sorrow (i think? i don’t care) where they slap a vocal distortion effect on her (which feels very kamelot somehow, like very futuristic dystopian yk) that sounds kind of dope in the moment (though weird in context). title track requiem for the indifferent sees a return to the orientalist aesthetics that were common in the genre in the 00s (think early xandria, therion), and it blunders a bit on the thin line between cool and goofy. it would sound cooler if the song didn’t kind of suck— i’m listening to it now, and the first verse is like… peak mark jansen lyricism, with literally zero prosody. this album has a LOT of simone’s lyricism which is frankly a blessing— see below:

SOMEONE knows about rhyme and metaphor! like i cannot tell you how god damn stupid “how can we justify the act / we’ve tried to look around and search for ways to (distortion amps up) shift the blame” sounds on an album where you get simone writing SooOOOO well for her own voice. but like i’m a simone simons lyrical miracle truther.

anyway like, unmemorable 3/5 album, i don’t have the musical vocabulary or the space to talk about what else i don’t like about it. mostly it’s unobjectionable if you’re not— as i currently am— sitting here with your nice headphones on having a good think about how it’s put together.

HOWEVER! they follow this up with the quantum enigma (2014) which RULES. like, the guitars get kind of swampy on requiem for the indifferent (i blame the drums in a lot of cases but i’m a babybrain music listener. it’s probably its own thing), but here they fucken sizzle. the concept also— like, okay, you can make good music with a total mismatch of concept and sound. i’m sure of it. not everyone seems to think that big cosmic things need big cosmic music, judging by the way people talk about like the mountain goats or whatever. taste! but the thing is, CONSISTENTLY, epica’s albums that are less esoteric are worse. like in the most.. my god. okay look at this

we start with design your universe because it’s the start of their album art era where they didn’t just go HERE WE’VE GOT A HOT GIRL. but literally you can see in the design that 2 + 4 in this lineup are going to suck. it’s INCREDIBLE! why does no one at nuclear blast see this!

note to self— relisten to intro to quantum enigma on something else and fuck with the eq. there’s a weird buzz that sounds like it might be… horn? yikes.

anyway like, the quantum enigma is way more rip-roaring cool out of the gate. it still features very unfortunate lyrics from mark jansen, but what else is new. here. L-R mark, rob, simone

fuckin ONE OF YEZ knows how to write words for a voice! (it’s simone. it’s always simone. rob’s aren’t bad— in all conscience is my favorite epica song of all time— but like, simone’s over here toeing the line of impressionistic senselessness with bonkers flair).

i need to go give this album a relisten so i’m dropping this here but the album fucking rips. i think the keyboards have particular rizz here: they lead in (with strings, which technically are more prominent but don’t feel like it) on the essence of silence, and then have this kind of gorgeous toeing-the-edge-of-cacophony effect as they get layered into the instrumental around the midway mark. a lot of the success of this song is how they toe the edge of shrill, which i mean as respectfully as is possible— like a lot of really soaring high notes from both simone and the backing vocals (i THINK marcela bovio is featured heavily here, as well as simone herself doing double duty— but i’d have to check). the whole album’s got a solid balance of symphonic elements and just really tasty metal. the latter half of victims of contingency has this incredible effect of like, trading verses between guitar solos and symphonic strings, cools off a bit (with a delicious piano flourish) to let simone have a second, then just barrels to the end. it’s got MOMENTUM! it has momentum they didn’t have again until omega! i’m gonna go jam. the album fucks. and then after it they broke my grinchy little heart with the holographic principle, and then patched it up and nursed me back to health with omega, and then. man idk. fucked my brains out or rebirthed me or something on omega alive. bye

Stampede: Oooooh this sounds like its flowing almost, the choir and the drums all add urgency but this sounds proper epic. You were right. Drums and choir are a need now it helps so much

Burn it all: this is the sickest blend of a bunch of different styles. Never expected a trap beat layered over a choir to sound awesome but it works surprisingly well

Po finds the truth: you even warned me and I nearly fell out of my chair. Geez that comes at you fast. Idk what instrument is playing the melody right after that drop, I can't tell if its a string or what but it sounds dope. Towards the end it almost has like a magical feel to it and wow does that hit different. For a split second I thought it was gonna go into the hobbit theme

Glorious purpose: major spooky vibes. I like the bassoon(?) or whatever it is, shakes your chest cavity kinda vibes. Also, I could've sworn there was a minecraft zombie sound effect. Short and sweet but gives you a sense of doom in a good way, I enjoyed that

Tai Lung escapes: I have a very sudden and profound respect for hans zimmer, more than I did previously. The little shift from deep booming instruments to like flutes and stuff in the middle hits. WOAH IT SUDDENLY SOUNDS LIKE A PORTAL SONG THATS SICK. I have sudden urgency to do my homework faster cause of the build in tempo (is that the right word? Who knows, it’s just fast). I could’ve sworn it would end like three times and it just keeps going it’s v satisfying

A blessing and a fessing: oh I can’t tell if this is bad but I got like Hispanic Jurassic park vibes from the first like five seconds. Love the suspense from the strings. Oh this lives up to its name so well like it’s suspenseful and then calming with just a hint of the previous tense undertones.

Dumbledores farewell: okay so I’ve never seen the movies (evidenced by me accidentally misspelling dumbledore as dumbledoor initially) but man yeah it just hits you in the feels. Short but sweet, it’s exactly what it needs to be. The last note kinda leaves you aching

We built our own world: also short and sweet and I love the cello (?) whatever the sounds are in the background, almost gives you a sense of megalophobia, like there’s something bigger back there. It could easily just be the high strings and yet there’s that added dimension. 10/10

Comic book: THAT BASS DROP THO OH MY GOSH easily my favourite on the playlist. Shame it’s so short cause oh my gosh that hit. And like the glitchiness of the track?? H I T S. love it

La valse de l’amour: quite the shift from the last song but like is this a waltz scene? Feels like it could be. Nice easy listening and just overall. Soft? WAIT was that a key change?? Or maybe they just started playing higher towards the end. Either way, oh that last chord sounded beautiful.

This is gonna be dope Two of my favorites for sure. It was great to see them supporting a newer artist. It also gonna be great hearing them with Madlib as well. Best of both worlds. Mos & Thought is a match made in heaven. Also, the fact that they didn’t put Bandana on the album and Flat Tummy Tea is still there is a good sign of them knowing what sounds good. Flat Tummy Tea was far superior to Bandana which felt flat. Easy AOTY contender. College trilogy is beyond amazing but I can definitely see Piñata, Bandana and Montana matching it or even surpass it as a trilogy if they keep with this trajectory. I am so excited for this second installment. Album looking fire, some great features sheeesh. Gawd I have never been this excited for an album. I can’t even begin to say which tracks I’m most excited for. Obviously Education but I’m also really curious about Freestyle Shit and Massage Seats. People talk about how left-field some of these beats are but no one is talking about Massage Seats or the second half of Half Manne Half Cocaine, those are probably my favorite beats of the album. This is the song that I’m not super hyped about rn but I’ll definitely find myself becoming obsessed with as time goes on. Just such a bizarre beat I need to let that shit marinate in my head and ears for a bit  Ye isn’t a bad album but it definitely is his worst. Just a boring album outside of Ghost Town. then we were all joking about something and i said “when you get even bigger, don’t forget about us” meaning the three of us there and he was like “i won’t!”

then he thanked us so goddamn gratefully for coming and said he had to get his cast boot back on his ankle, and i know, i know i am AWARE of how juvenile this sounds but when he hugged us goodbye he hugged me first. i know i was to his immediate left, but it still left me warm and fuzzy

This post has been a long time coming lmao. Lil Kim and Remy Ma dropped “Wake Me Up” and I’m about to shove my opinions down your throats. So I’ll start with the positives. I️ absolutely LOVE the ‘updated’ beat. “Queen Bitch” by Lil Kim is such a great song and definitely one of her best. The beat was amazing to begin with and the update wasn’t super in your face or offensive in any way. I️ have mixed feelings about the flows. Yes, I️ get that she’s gonna reuse the same flows as “Queen Bitch” but I️ feel like the callbacks were a little excessive. I️ think the beat was an amazing callback but she over referenced the lyrics to Queen Bitch making it sound a little less personal and innovative. To begin with Queen Bitch was heavily influenced/written with Biggie’s help. He provided the reference track to show her how to execute the song to the fullest making it feel extra unoriginal. It went from Biggie to Kim and years later to Remy. I️t feels like a tweaked copy of a copy. Personally I️ love both her verses however, objectively speaking they definitely weren’t perfect. The line “My hands like Mayweather’s” is good and all but as my pal Olly pointed out Mayweather wasn’t known for his punches but for his defense. But on the other hand of course if you got punched by Mayweather it’s still gonna fuckin hurt. Kim’s chorus was okay. It was a little bland and repetitive and she doesn’t sound like herself but the humble reference was dope. Remy’s second verse is fun af but soooo repetitive. She rhymes ‘shit’ literally 8 times in a row. It’s difficult to stomach from an analytical standpoint. Nicki does the same thing in “Rake it Up” with the word China. Nicki did it bc she’s into using homonyms/homographs but that’s not what I’m babbling about rn. Again, when Remy rhymes shit 8 times in a row it’s because Lil Kim had rhymed bitch in “Queen Bitch” 7 times during her first verse. So not only is it repetitive as shit (pun intended) it’s also not at all innovative or creative. The strongest lines in verse two were definitely “‘cause you a clown and Homey don’t play that shit” you kiddos probably don’t remember the show “In Living Color” but this line was a great reference to a great show that jump started a lot of careers. The bars that dig the deepest are definitely “I heard he lay that dick, you let him filet that fish/You just met him, how he bae that quick?” This of course is a shot at Nicki Minaj and her new boyfriend Nas. Remy is implying that she heard Nicki fucked Nas and made him ‘bae’ too quick seeing she recently cut off her engagement to Meek Mill. Ouch Remy. She then raps “I'll say it to your face, don't gotta relay that shit/If Nick-ole a Kid-man, OJ that bitch!” Oh my god where do I️ even begin with this. Remy in her Genius video explains the lyrics and starts the video off by saying this song is “not about anyone” like bruh you can’t say “I’ll say it to your face” and “it’s not about Nicki” she’s being incredibly hypocritical. Now to the most frustrating line of all. “If Nick-ole a Kid-man, OJ that bitch!” First of all, OJ was not married to Nicole Kidman he was married to Nicole Brown. Second, Nicole Kidman is an actress and has no ties whatsoever to OJ. Third, Nicki’s full name is Onika Tanya Miraj, not Nicole. Fourth, Remy caught her mistake AND KEPT IT IN KNOWING IT DIDN’T MAKE SENSE. It’s so frustrating listening to her claim to be an artist dedicated to her craft when she won’t even fix a simple but vital mistake because it “sounded dope”. Again, hypocritical. Now to the final line of the second verse. “If that's your dog, I suggest you go train that bitch!” She’s telling Nas to control Nicki bc Nicki’s out here not paying homage to rappers like Lil Kim who helped lay the foundation she built her empire on. I️ agree with this but not the control aspect of course. She’s her own woman but I️ really hate that the artists I️ respect and look up to disrespect each other and drag other women down like it isn’t already difficult enough in a male dominated industry. I️ also feel like Remy just didn’t put enough into this song. She had two simple verses, used a blueprint of a blueprint, and didn’t fix sloppy/lazy mistakes. Lil Kim closes the song with some of the worst, unoriginal lyrics I’ve ever heard from her. I️ Love Lil Kim to death but I’m so disappointed in this song. So much potential wasted. Kim should have had a rap verse with complex metaphors and her famous fuck you attitude and voice but instead we got what sounded like a washed up auto tuned Kim. She didn’t sound like herself, she was slurring words, wasting space (there should have been a rap verse in place of that nonsense) and the auto tune made it unlistenable. I️ honestly can’t even listen to the ending because it’s that bad. I️ skip after Remy’s verses. I️ do love the song though it’s a bop if you don’t over analyze and skip Kim’s verse. I’d probably give this song a 4/10 maybe a 5/10 on a good day. Beat was good, some great lyrics but mostly stale and unoriginal, and having Lil Kim and Remy Ma on a distrack @ Nicki is such a fuck you so I️ dig that distrack wise.

anyway at some point i should probably ramble about my trip to boston?? so i’m gonna go ahead and do that??

like right off the bat let me just say the worst [art was actually GETTING to mass. my train was supposed to leave at 9:55am, and around 7:50 i got a text saying it was delayed until 1:03pm. we arrived around noon, and gradually my anxiety about going on the trip turned into anxiety of NOT getting on the trip as the board kept delaying... and delaying... and delaying...

....and then it started pouring out. crazy wind. murmurs the train lost signal and all contact with the station. after i finally got on (at 3:00pm), my aunt texted me that all that? yeah. that was a tornado warning. wat.

i got a pair of seats to myself for most of trip. fought with my wifi. listened to the crazy lady rant about dope ruining america a few rows back. mostly enjoyed the view and basked in the fact that i was not, shockingly, puking my stomach lining out. until we got to utica, and a shit ton of people got on.

my seat buddy then became an almost cute 18 year old dude with dreads and a lower half trash polka sleeve who was more interested in his earbuds than anything so i was fine with this. until we were about to MA and a few exchanged word and lazy lounging around turned into him doing THING guys think is cute where they lowkey rub your skin with the side of their finger against my thigh. so i ended up sitting up and the next stop he moved his shit to another seat. YEAH BYE.

along the way we kept having to stop bc signal problems and track construction and letting other trains pass. needless to say the train that was supposed to get in at like 8pm got in at at like 2:30am.

it was miserable, and raining. rachel got us an uber and i sat in the back seat next to some chick wh was super pretty and dressed up and here i was, a goblin, smelling like train restoom, in an ill fitting deadpool hoodie and yoga pants.

when we got to her place she made me some ramen (WITH THE RANDOM EGG AND EVERYTHING) that was good but spicy af and my stomach noped out and tbh over a week later my stomach is just now letting me eat properly again. tho i’m blaming this more on the issues with my abdomen acting up prior to leaving than the actual trip (tho, my skin having pores the size of actual craters i am blaming on the trip). i think the one thing we ate that DIDN’T act up in my body was the awful chicken wings we got from Wings Over that were about half fat and ridiculously undercooked. it figures.

ANYWAY. her futon is huge. it’s sad that i have more leg room on a futon than an actual mattress, but whatever. and there was construction going on across the street. fun fact: i came home to construction going on on MY street. so this was inescapable from the jump.

day 1 i got cute as possible and we hopped a bus and a train. my stomach was less forgiving of the motion here, but i lived. i saw Ron, the T-Rex. and we went to the isabella gardner museum where she lied and said i was a student. i was then asked a bunch of questions about being a student, none of which i was prepared for, and i’m pretty sure the only reason they let me in was because my zip code was accurate. that place is massive and pretty gorgeous from head to toe and i can’t fathom ever being that fucking rich.

then we went to get some food at a nifty little bar and restaurant . the name is escaping me rn but i stole a coaster. again, the food did not agree with me, and i could do a review on boston restrooms at this point. but it was great.

NINJA SEX PARTY! the house of blues wasn’t as bad as reviews made it sound, and aside from the mess that was the merch table they we kind of cheated like assholes due to some pretty honest confusion, was a good time. the line was MASSIVE. we got there an hour early and it was already around the corner and hard to miss. by the time we got towards the front of the building, it was around the block. we met a couple younger dudes from maine and a significantly more awkward gentleman more our age to keep us entertained. there were some street musicians. some asshole staff. you know.

all i really have to say about the concert itself was it was probably the best live music show of any kind i’ve ever been to and definitely the most enjoyable environment (huge tall dude who kept, somehow, ending up directly in front of me aside). everyone sounded amazing live, even if we were RIGHT under the speaker stage left and now permanently have bass vibrations embedded in our bones.

day two we hit up the museum of fine arts, which is massive and we didn’t see all of (and i paid full price for, thank you very much) and then grabbed a pizza and those awful wings and intended to chill out with some boy meets world. but the disks wouldn’t play. so we settled on mst3k. and let me tell you, i have not nearly cried from laughter in something as much as ‘cry wilderness’ nearly made me fucking cry.

day three we headed to south station to meet probes and hung out. there were a bunch of food trucks outside that were kinda neat. we didn’t think that girl would ever fucking find us, but she did. everything was OKAY. NO NEED TO PANIC. NO FIVE HOUR DELAYS. jess gives massive hugs, for the record.

we hit up a spot for lunch where they served be like, the biggest plate of pasta and bread i have ever witnessed in my life. i felt wasteful only eating barely half of it. then we found our way to the trains and the aquarium just in time for some sweet penguin education and eventually a lecture on their huge ass fucking tank that takes up the entire center of the room with a 90 year old sea turtle in it and some sharks and string rays. it was pretty cool, yo.  i got a stuffed squid in the gift shop, even tho we did not see any giant squids (0/10 do not recommend) and outside jess gave me a present even though i fucking told everyone no presents (RAChEL ALSO GAVE ME NAIL POLISH AND A WRISTBAND WTF). it was a new day candy bar from fye. and yes, pop rocks n chocolate is surprisingly pleasant.

our PLAN was to go see hitmans bodyguard. but everyone showing it before like 7 was only showing 3d, and we wanted to get her on a bus home by 9. haha what fucking suckers @ us, because the bus didn’t leave until like 10. so we got shitty milkshakes, hit up the comic shop, and wandered around harvard for a bit until it got dark. and then were stuck at south station, wondering if she was going to be stuck in MA forever. reflecting on two quiet nerds and one extrovert being a not great possible combination of three people. but i still had a good time.

day 4 we did, in fact, see hitmans bodyguard and while it was mostly forgettable summer action lulz, i do ship the hell out of samuel l jackson and salma hayek now. so that’s cool. it was a fun time. hit up the park after, and a b&n to get schooled on peak writing stephen king. then we went to starbucks and i HAD STARBUCKS FOR THE FIRST TIME?? it was the double choc ship frap thing. it’s good. i’m mad about it.

we headed back, did laundry, ordered food. i ought her dream daddy, which was a waste of money, but i do take pride in just knowing she’s stuck having technically played a portion of dream daddy now. it’s her own fault for asking about it, it really is. mostly we watched more mst3k, some grumps shit, some random shit, some postmodern jukebox, had a drink. just chilled. and the ‘oh... fuck... haha... i have to go home tomorrow’ feeling hit when i turned off the lights.

i was too bummed the next day for much of anything tbh. i get depressed after anything fun. i get depressed after wwe shows, lmao, so for the trip to already be over when it suddenly seemed like i just got there sucked. plus it only just then really hit me i was in a different part of the country, if that makes sense even if it was only one state over. it was a weird realization as someone who never travels to have.

the train home i wasn’t so lucky to be alone most of it. i ended up in an aisle seat with a college girl. we minded our own business. stuck directly under the AC that was way too cold. a woman and a fucking baby sitting the next row over the second any space cleared out. had a layover in albany where an old guy made me a shot of iced chocolate espresso which he had never been asked to make before, and truthfully, i’d never had before, but it was alright. i actually enjoyed the layover as some weird, space between spaces, time to reflect on my own in an unfamiliar place kind of thing.

we got in around midnight, my aunt picked me up. got home around one.

that was that.

i had a really good time. i’m sure it didn’t seem that way. i’m like that. but i did and i appreciated the opportunity and definitely appreciated rachel for letting me freeload on her futon and showing me around and making me ramen i felt guilty for not finishing.

the city was nice. i’m sure i was only seeing the nicer parts, mind you, but compared to rochester or buffalo it just felt wider, cleaner. idk. i didn’t HATE it, and as someone who hates being in cities for more than a couple hours, it wasn’t bad.

it was a great time away from the world and despite the stress of coming home to everything, and a room without molding on the door (which was, for the record, still locked), i did feel a lot better afterwards. i still do.

College trilogy is beyond amazing but I can definitely see Piñata, Bandana and Montana matching it or even surpass it as a trilogy if they keep with this trajectory. I am so excited for this second installment. Album looking fire, some great features sheeesh. Gawd I have never been this excited for an album. I can’t even begin to say which tracks I’m most excited for. Obviously Education but I’m also really curious about Freestyle Shit and Massage Seats. People talk about how left-field some of these beats are but no one is talking about Massage Seats or the second half of Half Manne Half Cocaine, those are probably my favorite beats of the album. This is the song that I’m not super hyped about rn but I’ll definitely find myself becoming obsessed with as time goes on. Just such a bizarre beat I need to let that shit marinate in my head and ears for a bit  Ye isn’t a bad album but it definitely is his worst. Just a boring album outside of Ghost Town. Flat Tummy Tea was far superior to Bandana which felt flat. Easy AOTY contender. College trilogy is beyond amazing but I can definitely see Piñata, Bandana and Montana matching it or even surpass it as a trilogy if they keep with this trajectory. I am so excited for this second installment. Album looking fire, some great features sheeesh. Gawd I have never been this excited for an album. I can’t even begin to say which tracks I’m most excited for. Obviously Education but I’m also really curious about Freestyle Shit and Massage Seats. People talk about how left-field some of these beats are but no one is talking about Massage Seats or the second half of Half Manne Half Cocaine, those are probably my favorite beats of the album. This is the song that I’m not super hyped about rn but I’ll definitely find myself becoming obsessed with as time goes on. Just such a bizarre beat I need to let that shit marinate in my head and ears for a bit  Ye isn’t a bad album but it definitely is his worst. Just a boring album outside of Ghost Town. When was the last time My Attitude Will Always Based On How You Treat Me shirt . put out a track? Feel like I havent seen the name Yasiin Bey outside of political conversation in some time He just put out a whole album but didn’t release it commercially. He did a one-day listening party in a theater overseas somewhere. The most Mos Def thing ever. Hopefully, it comes out soon Yeah there’s no official release yet but it’s supposed to be on his album that he’s only performing live. Cloth Face Mask I’m super stoked about this My Attitude Will Always Based On How You Treat Me shirt . my one critique about piñata is that the amount of features kind of bogged down the projects at times. This is gonna be dope Two of my favorites for sure. It was great to see them supporting a newer artist. It also gonna be great hearing them with Madlib as well. Best of both worlds.
