The Fool on the Hill - Chapter 4
The secret behind the Two Gentlemen of Verona and the beginning of Lokius...
Their story on the Archive
Between the shelves
*
Tom’s fingers slid over the spines of the books along the shelves.
MayaAngelou...
William Blake...
Robert Frost...
Ah there we are Shakespeare's poems...
He took an edition of Shakespeare’s poems before 1640 out of the shelf and sat cross legged on the floor.
Camera and lights had to be relocated for the shoot in the library and Tom thought he might spend the break doing something useful.
“Sir?” he heard Owen’s voice imitating a stern security guard, “I’m afraid reading on the floor is prohibited. I have to ask you to get up immediately.”
Tom looked up to a smiling Owen and smiled back. “Why don’t you come down?”
And he did. Owen sat down, leaning at the book shelf opposite, his legs drawn up, smiling at Tom.
“So Shakespeare again?” his head pointed to the book Tom held in his hand.
Tom laughed softly. “Yes, the conversation yesterday got me thinking again.”
Owen nodded and smiled in amusement. “Maybe I get myself a copy of Hamlet to read before bed. What do you think?”
“Good choice, good choice,” Tom reassured him.
And he couldn’t help smiling either. They had been doing this a lot lately. Talking and constantly smiling at each other.
Owen leaned forward to search for the right book, his fingers now also sliding over the spines.
“Ah look at that!” He pulled out a copy of Two gentlemen of Verona and waved it in his hand.
“I read this in college. I always thought: this is about two bisexual guys, right? And the teacher was like,” he mimicked an older Brit, “oh no, this is Shakespearian English, it’s a bit different than you are used to, I guess. He was from England and wanted to show me that I as a stupid kid from Texas could not understand Shakespeare...”
“And oh how wrong they were about you...” Tom remarked and hoped, it didn’t sound like he was blushing.
He imagined Owen in high school and how he got underestimated just because of the way he was. Tom certainly would have loved being Owen’s friend back then.
Owen opened the book. “Aaah, I remember it now. Cease to persuade, my loving Proteus:
Home-keeping youth have ever homely wits.” He looked at Tom. “That already sounded somewhat gay to me. All these sweet words they have for each other…”
Tom’s heart began to pound. He had been looking for the right moment to tell Owen.
He had talked with Owen about Loki before they began shooting and of course he had mentioned that Loki was bisexual. Owen had been surprised but not in a bad way. He had said something like “Okay, good for him.”
So Tom could assume that Owen wasn’t homophobic. But still, what would he say when he knew Tom was bisexual himself? And Tom even wondered about Owen himself?
Tom had the feeling that Owen was flirting with him. But Tom had flirted with his straight friends, too, so that could mean absolutely nothing. And he would hate it for the flirting to stop just because Owen was suddenly insecure about knowing Tom was bi.
So Tom just said, “Look, this is interesting as well,” and showed Owen the book with the poems. “These are the poems by Shakespeare. And this is an edition with the original text, where a lot of poems are directed to… men. And later they were published again by a publicist called John Benson. But he changed most of the pronouns from he and him to she and her.”
“Wow…that’s… outrageous! I didn’t even know that... You really know a lot of that stuff. Not just Hamlet.” Owen smiled at him. “Maybe we should start a new lecture, the Shakespeare lecture.”
Tom laughed in embarrassment. He knew he was a nerd and got on people’s nerves with this whole stuff.
“You know, I always could kinda relate to Shakespeare somehow.” Owen said, looking at him, intently. “I always felt we shared some similar… feelings. It felt somehow familiar.”
Tom felt a little dizzy hearing this.
He still could be misinterpreting this.
But he had heard Owen say that and he thought he just had to act on it.
So he looked a bit left and right to see if there was anyone near them and said, “I know what you mean, I always felt the same. Because he wrote for both, you know. For women and for men.”
He cried out inside. Why was this still so hard to just say it? He was 39 for Christ’s sake.
But he probably got it right after all, because Owen nodded slowly, his face all soft, his smile reassuring, knowing.
“It was nice, by the way, there at the table. I loved that," Owen said after a little pause. "That Loki would sleep in front of Mobius.”
Tom became a little embarrassed. “I just felt that it would fit. Because he trusts Mobius. That’s new for him. And there’s a scene later on with Sylvie where he says that he can’t sleep around people he can’t trust. So… I wanted this to match. I’m glad Kate went along with it.”
The look that Owen gave him was kind of mischievous…
“I think we should talk about the relationship between Loki and Mobius a bit more… dig a bit deeper. Because I think there is a lot to show that’s not necessarily in the script. You know I was lying in my bed yesterday, imagining Mobius lying in his bed, thinking about Loki. Yes, he’s obsessed with him but I think there’s so much more. He really cares for him, you know.”
And the way Owen said “he cares for him”, God, Tom’s heart immediately began racing again. And he thought he would burst. He felt so much joy and so much love and so much excitement that he was probably grinning like a clown.
Yes, they already talked about the relationship between Loki and Mobius a lot, how much these character could give to each other… but they hadn’t taken it to another level… yet. Honestly, when he first read the script, he didn’t see it either. But with Owen now here on set… it was getting better every day.
“I’d love that,” he said softly.
And Owen just smiled at him. And then something happened that Tom hadn’t expected. Owen leaned his head back on the shelf and began to talk quietly.
“You know, there was this boy. Charly. We were best friends, from a young age, you know sandbox friends. And we were doing everything together. And one day when we were like 9 or 10 or something he asked me ‘Should we kiss?´ like he would ask me `Wanna go for a ride?´, as if this was just something you just do with a best friend. So we kissed.” Owen smiled in memory of this. “And it was nice… It felt good… So now and then we would make out… And… a few years later he would ask me `Should be jerk off?´ and I again was like ´Why not´… so we jerked off together” He shook his head as if he himself couldn’t believe that really had happened. “So until we were 18 we pretty much did everything one could do in this… area. We had girlfriends from time to time. We were crazy about them. But with Charly… it felt always different, more like coming home, something you could always go back to. It was comforting. And all the time it felt like it was the most natural thing in the world.” He sighed and looked at the floor, lost in thoughts. “If there hadn’t been the people to tell you otherwise…”
Tom didn’t know how to breathe, didn’t know what to say. He was so overwhelmed about Owen’s endearing story, and the sadness behind it. And that he had shared it with him….
“TOOOM? OWEN??” Lea, the production assistant, was searching for them and calling their names until she finally found them between the shelves. “How should I find you here?” she reprimanded them. “It’s all set up!”
“Sorry…” Tom and Owen answered simultaneously and helped each other get up.
Owen straightened himself and turned to Tom.
“Meet me at section F for Fitzgerald at the next break?”
Tom laughed softly. “Sure!”
And while he said this, his heart fluttered in his chest excited about what would happen in section F.

Before I started requests, I just had an accumulation of random stories in my head and had to write them out, now, most things. Sometimes it’s because of dreams, movie I watch with interesting scenes or plot twists, books or general ideas that just pop into my head, sometimes it’s also ‘what if’ type questions, if that makes sense.

I didn’t hear about this before but nope, I mean how even?? 😂 Like, in most universes, the age gap between the two is between 10 to 14 years, how- I don’t- no, and besides, they come from a completely different background and I don’t know where this is from but it’s always going to be a no in my heart!
Can you relate to any of the batboys?
All of them! I’ll generalise a lot because this might turn into an essay otherwise lmao.
Damian for his love of animals and hating people in general. Tim for the lack of sleep. Jason is me tbh. Dick loves puns and jokes as much as I do.
Are Bruce and your father alike?
Kind of?
What's your favourite T.V show?
Sons Of Anarchy, Friends, The Vampire Diaries and Good Girls
Are you looking forward to Titans on October 18th?
I have mixed feelings about it, I’m happy they are making a live action Dick and Jason but it looks really bad, I’m still going to keep an open mind though!
Jason and Artemis or Kori and Dick?
Kori and Dick, I don’t seen Jason and Artemis’ relationship as more than friends, I don’t know what happened in RHATO, which is funny how I keep talking about the comics since I magically have never read any of them???
Thoughts on Redhood's transformation In Redhood the Outlaw?
I want my Jaybird hair back. I’m oKaY with the new design but I adore the old design!

Alfred’s (that was a tough one though!)
Is Brenton Thwaites good enough to be Robin in the upcoming series?
I don’t know! I’ve never really had a good face claim for Dick so I’m going to keep an open mind about it. He’d better had a nice bubble butt though!
Jason's gun or Dick's eskrimas?
Ughh this is haaard! Maybe Dick’s eskrima sticks.

Harley Quinn

Will you take request in the future Not that I’m asking for one I’m just curious I love your writing style
Aw thanks! 🙈 That’s so sweet of you. And yes of course!! I just closed them because I didn’t know when I would be able to have a reliable amount of time to write, I’m opening them soon hopefully! :)
Favorite movie of all time/ What's your favorite movie and why?
Logan, the FeElS, plus my girl Laura plus my man Donald Pierce is in it.

Not really no, I’ve never really looked up to anyone.
What kind of music do you like?
Pop, Classical not the Mozart type of classical.
Do You have any "rituals" regarding your writing process?
Yes! If it’s a series, I write the whole plot down on a book with details and elements that I want included. I keep it besie me to be sure I follow the plot whislt writing it.
Since I write in the evening, if there’s a one shot request that I lack inspiration about, I write something else and think of a plot when I’m in bed before i go to sleep. It really helps be get the requests written and in the queue.
I normally sit in front of my TV, catching up on my series or something and just write. I don’t really have a ritual other than this!
Favourite cartoon?
Young Justice ayyye!

A tiger, an eagle or a griffin. I can’t choose lol!
Do you think you'd survive in a post apocalyptic world?
Maybe? I mean I feel like I would be smart enough but I saw World War Z and dying is better than surviving with traumatic experiences running through your head 24/7!
Where would you go for a dream vacation?
Everywhere! I want to visit the world!
If a genie granted you 3 wishes, what would you wish for? (No wishing for more wishes lol)
DANG IT!

What'd you think of Heath Ledger's Joker?
Terrifying. heath Ledge did a fine good job at portraying someome that puts that unsettling feeling in your gut. Every one of his scenes are iconic. The best Joker so far in my opinion.

Get to Know the Writer Tag
1. At what age did you start to get serious about writing? If you don’t, what age did you start to write?
I’m not sure what I would say “serious” means to me. For years, I was very serious about writing fanfiction. But probably what most people would consider “getting serious”, was when I started writing Dreaming in Shadow. I was fourteen, in my first year of high school, and absolutely certain I had discovered the idea that would be my first real novel. Almost fifteen years later, I still haven’t finished Dreaming in Shadow. (For various reasons.) But I’ve never given up on it. It is the first book that really created my universe, even though the story that later became Magic Inc. was much older.
2. What was your first piece of writing about? (Fanfiction, speculative piece, etc.)
I suppose my first piece of writing was a poem I had to write for school. But the first piece of writing I did completely by choice was a short bit of Harry/Hermione fanfiction that was heavily influenced by another writer’s work. It wasn’t very good, as you might imagine. I was only eleven when I wrote it.
3. Do you make media based on your writing? (Playlists, fanart, etc.)
I practically cannot write without music, so playlists (or soundtracks as I tend to call them) are an essential part of my creative process. I cannot draw for the life of me, but I do enjoy making characters on The Sims 2. They often look pretty similar when it comes to facial features, because I’m not very adventurous with the sliders. But I focus on getting the hair, eyes, makeup, clothes, accessories, and personality points right. Once in a long while, I will make a house or building on the game as well. Making the Parker house was really helpful in writing certain scenes in Magic Inc. I have very recently started making moodboards for my characters. Something I was scared to do because of poor photo editing skills and potential copyright issues. But I’m actually having a lot of fun with it, now that I’ve let myself be free to mess around.
4. What inspired the idea behind your current, most prominent wip?
Magic Inc. is based on a combination of my childhood experiences with bullying and the fantasy world I built up as an escape from it. The series follows young Jane Roberts, who discovers magic, friendship, and first (unrequited) love in Book One. In Book Two, which is nearly complete, the shy and anxious Jane will face panic attacks and increased bullying. Not to mention the revelation of her true powers and the pain of watching the older boy she believes to be her Soulmate date someone else. All of these things combine to give Jane enough reason to try to see into her future. Which has unexpected consequences.
5. Are there any tropes you hate to see in stories that seem to be popular?
I don’t think that there are any tropes that I absolutely hate. I tend to not be into love triangles, because I’m big on forever soulmates. I also don’t usually like finding second love after a partner’s death, for that same reason. And I’ve mostly grown out of my obsession with love/hate relationships. But I think any trope can be done well by the right author and/or set of circumstances. Honestly, what bothers me more than over-used tropes are people complaining about over-used tropes. Yes, sometimes authors rely too heavily on certain tropes. Sometimes they use love triangles to spice up a bland story line. Sometimes they use instant connections to skip over relationship development. But that doesn’t mean that every story that has a love triangle or instant connection is garbage. (I basically hate the term instalove at this point.) Authors use tropes because it’s what they love to write. If you’re not into certain tropes, that’s totally fine! You don’t have to be. But why do we have to bash authors and other readers for what they like?
6. Are there any tropes that you love to see in stories, but they’re rarely portrayed?
I just love genuine connections between characters. Whether they are a connection that starts from a spark at the moment two characters meet, or builds up over time, or ideally, some combination. I like romance that doesn’t put a big focus on how “hot” the characters are, but instead is based on who they are. If there is an instant connection, I like it to be focused on the energy between two characters, not just the physical attraction. Something that takes time to figure out. I don’t know if any of these things are really tropes. I also enjoy soulmates and forbidden love. And best friends who fall in love. But I don’t think those are rare.
7. Do you prefer stories that focus more on characters or on the plot?
Characters. Always characters. Intricate plots are great, but if I don’t feel connected to the characters, I’m not likely to enjoy a story enough to care.
8. If you had to base a candle off of your protagonist, what would it’s name and scent be?
I’d probably call Jane’s candle Always Forever (because she craves a forever love), and it would smell like berries and almond cake.
9. Are there any authors that have inspired you or your work?
I hesitate to call any authors a direct inspiration now. At this point, I’ve figured out my own style and process. But there are certainly lots of authors and other creators who influenced me endlessly as I was developing my own style. Magic and world-building from J.K. Rowling. Emotional intensity from Ai Yazawa. I made a post about my most influential books here recently. And honestly, just about every piece of art I take in gives me some level of inspiration. It’s so amazing how many stories can touch your heart in some way.
10. Which of your characters do you feel you’ve put most of yourself into?
Jane in Magic Inc. is completely me. Her life is a mixture of the things I went through at her age and the things I daydreamed about. Jane loves deeply, feels deeply, and is easily hurt. She is anxious and obsessive. She feels like an outsider and just wants to feel loved and accepted. Our experiences are not exactly the same, but Jane and I are the same at our core. She is me. And that’s what is scary about sharing her with the world.
Tagging anyone who hasn’t done it and wants to.

Journal Postings 9-10
For this posting I have decided to talk about a single page comic that has influenced my visions on comics and how much of an impact visuals in a single page can affect an overall story. In this page we see a little girl waiting by a baseball field for a boy she liked. I honestly think that the emptiness in the scene and lack of emotion let’s the reader, such as myself, imagine what the character is going through. The only aspect of this comic page that keeps the reader in a positive mindset might be the color scheme. The colors in the page draw your attention to the environment, but then again when you look at the girl looking for something she knows she is not going t see, the colors don’t really matter. This comic and the continued pages outside of this one express to me as a reader and now a comic writer that colors don’t mean much to a comic when they’re other things going on that the reader needs to pay attention to.
My Evolved Process
I no longer think that my process is evolving because the semester is almost over and I honestly do not think I will continue to create comics. Although I had plenty of fun making my comics and writing about my efforts through out the semester, I feel as if my artistic ability hinders me from making any project worth the time and efforts I put in, therefore I think that after the final portfolio I am done creating comics. In the course of this semester I have learned to give myself the time and leisure in comparison to my artsy creativity. To compare my adaptation project to my final creation, I think there are more similarities than there are differences. Both pieces are about Edgar Allen Poe poetry and my take on the poetry adapted into a comic. The adaptation project is not the same poem I’m using for the final, however Poe’s poetry majority of the time fits the description of grim, and dreary literature. I feel the need to create the final in black and white just like the adaptation because of the environment in the poetry, and for the simple fact that Poe would have hated his poems to be published in any color.
