Chapter 7
You were barely in the med bay for an hour and your knee was already back to it's normal size.  Expecting Dr Cho to be coming back and checking on your progress, you are surprised to see Nick Fury step into your room with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Heard you got into a little scrap today, how ya feeling?" he asked as he handed you the cup.
"Well, my knee is already better, these high tech medical equipment might actually be worth the ass kicking I received" you reply sipping the coffee with a content sigh.
"The word around the tower is you saved the day and shouldn't be behind a desk, everyone on that team is grateful for your quick work today" he states and sits next to you in the chair.
"Is that an actual compliment coming from you, Nicky?  I need to write this down, no one will ever believe me.  On second thought, can you do that again so I can record it?" you giggle enthusiastically making him more irritated than necessary.
"Alright smartass, report to my office tomorrow and we can discuss changes to your position, that is if you want it" and he was out of the room before you could respond.
"Thanks for the coffee" you yelled after him.  Deep in thought, you don't realize Dr Cho is back and checking your stats.
"Ok, you are done with this treatment, come back tomorrow morning and we will double check all the tissue tears are repaired and muscle memory is restored, but everything looks perfect on my end.  Don't push yourself too much today, you are still going to be sore, so take the elevator not the stairs, cab rather than subway.  We will check again tomorrow but with the way your scans look, you should be cleared quickly for your next mission. Any questions?" she asks looking at you expectantly.
You were a bit in shock so you just shook your head.  What did she mean by the next mission?  Was Nick really putting you on the team? This is ridiculous,  you are a translator, you sit behind a desk, this is not what you expected from this job, but in the back of your head you wanted to jump up and down with excitement,  even if you were scared to death.
Making your way through med bay and heading toward the front entrance you are lost in your head and almost run right into Tony and Pepper.
"Y/N, it's good to see you, we heard the mission went well"
"Hi Pepper, sorry, it's been a long day, and yeah another dirtbag locked up, so i would call that a success" you smile at her in response.
"We are heading out, would you like to join us? We can celebrate your first team mission!"
"Thank you for the offer Tony, but I really need a bath before anything else tonight" you state as you continue heading toward the exit.
"At least let us give you a lift home, Happy will get you to that bath a lot quicker than any cab in town" he states while ushering toward the garage. You look at Pepper and her look tells you not to fight him on this.
“Thank you, I appreciate that, it’s been a long day” you sigh as you head towards the car.
“I’m glad things went well today, how do you like working in the field with the team?” Pepper asks as she slides in next to you.
“It was eye opening to say the least.  Working behind a desk can be a bit mundane at times, even though I know I’m helping, this was the first time I could really see what we do to protect those who need it, and being able to be a part of that is pretty rewarding, even though I am completely wiped out right now” you respond as honestly as possible.   Seeing the victims of these crazy people terrorizing the world was scary, and overwhelming but knowing they are able to return to their families safely.”
Thanking them with a wave as you walked up to your building, you weren’t sure you had the energy needed to even order take out, but you need to get cleaned up and a hot bath really was the only option at this point.  Loading up your Sinatra playlist, you slipped into the hot tub after throwing in a lavender bath bomb.  Being surrounded in the warmth and letting all your muscles relax you weren’t sure you would ever be able to get up.
You must have fallen asleep because the water was cold when you were startled by a knock at your door.  Grabbing your robe, you rushed to the door and checked the peephole.  Opening the door slowly you smiled at Steve and a lovely bouquet of flowers.
He looked at you with a shy grin and held out the flowers “these are for you.  I went by med bay to check on you, but they told me you were released already.  And you look great” he said as he looked at you from head to toe, taking in your appearance.
“Thank you, I uh, I came straight home after Dr Cho released me and decided to soak in the tub to relax, it’s been a crazy day” responding with a sigh and stepping back.  “Where are my manners, please come in.  I’ll put these in some water and get dressed, would you like something to drink?” you asked while walking to the kitchen.
“No, I didn’t want to intrude, I was just worried about you, you took quite a hit during the mission and wanted to make sure you are ok” following you into the kitchen.
“Oh my gosh” you gasped “I skipped out on the debriefing, Captain I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to take off, I wasn’t thinking.  I’ll get dressed and back to the tower right now” you are babbling and suddenly realize he is right in front of you and holding your hands in his.
“I came here as your friend to check on you, not your captain.  I wanted to see how you are feeling physically and emotionally, the debriefing is not as important as you are” he responded with a reassuring smile.
When had he crossed the room, did he always smell this good? Wow, his eyes are really beautiful. Giving your hand a squeeze you stopped daydreaming about the man in front of you and smiled.
“Thank you Steve, you are very kind.  I’m ok, a little shaken up and still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing” you told him as your stomach began to growl loudly “and apparently I’m hungry too.  I was going to order in, would you like to join me?” you asked looking up at him.
“I’d love too, you go change and I’ll order.  Anything in particular you want?’ he asked, pulling out his phone.
“Surprise me, I’ll be just a minute” you responded as you headed down the hall.   You were dressed heading into the living room when there was a loud bang on the door.
What could he have ordered that would arrive this quickly.  Another bang and you were starting to tense “open up, I know you’re in there!” came from behind the door as you looked through the peephole.  You started to unlock the door when Steve got up and stepped beside you on high alert.
Turning to him you said “It’s ok” as you opened the door.   “Cob, what are you doing here?”  you asked as your brother scooped you up in an enormous bear hug.  Tapping his shoulder you whispered “I can’t breathe” and started laughing when he finally released you.
“What am I doing here? You told me to come! Holy Shit you’re Captain America!” he said excitedly as he looked at Steve.
“Steve, this is my brother, Jacob Miller.  Cob, this is Steve Rogers” you introduced them and thought Cob might pass out at how excited he looked.  Ever the gentleman,
Steve stretched out his hand “it’s a pleasure to meet you, Jacob, your sister has told me a lot about you.”  You ushered everyone back into the living room and realized the Cob was still shaking Steve’s hand.  Clearing your throat, Jacob looked up at you and finally let go of Steve’s hand.
“Sorry, he’s never met a real life hero before, I think he’s a little star struck” you giggle as Jacob still has a huge grin on his face like he’s a little kid.  “Cob, I didn’t tell you to come, but I’m glad you are here” you tell him as you sit on the other side of Steve on the sofa.
“What?  You did tell me to come….your text, 3 exclamation points at the end when we checked in, I got on the first flight here. Joshua’s on his way too, but he’s coming from San Diego and I have no idea when he finally got a flight out.  He’ll call when he lands” he explains.
“I am so sorry, I was on some good paid killers and told Natasha to respond, I wasn’t thinking of the codes, I’m sorry, it’s been a long day” you sigh when you realize that you just threw a wrench in both your brothers day because of the codes you always use.
“Natasha as in Natasha Romanoff?  That’s awesome!  But Uncle Nick had called and said you were beaten up pretty bad, so I was planning on checking up on you anyway.  I didn’t tell dad, but Nick probably did, so if you haven't heard from him, he’s probably on his way too.   But you don’t look too bad, you still know how to take care of yourself, I’m glad you're ok” he told you sincerely.
Your family always worried about you and wanted to protect you, which was always so overwhelming growing up, but now you were grateful that they were all dropping everything to be here for you, even if you were perfectly fine.
“I’m good, and I’m glad you are here” you smile at him when you hear a knock at the door.
“That should be dinner, I’ll be right back” Steve says as he gets up and heads out of the room.
Jacob leans over and whispers “I want every last detail on your new captain, I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you are dating him.”
You gasp and look at your brother “we aren’t dating, we work together”
“So just sex then?” he asks as he wiggles his eyebrows at you and cover your face with your hands.  Knowing full well that your brother has no problem making sexual remarks around anyone and will push the envelope just to get a response out of you.
“Alright, dinner is served!” Steve announces as he walks back into the room “I ordered a lot, so I hope everyone is hungry”
The meal between the three of you was surprisingly good, conversation flowed easily and they both seemed to get along well, but that might have been because Cob was star struck in front of Steve.
"Well, I will head out" your brother announced as he stood from the table "and let you two enjoy the rest of your evening together"
"Actually, I should be heading back to, I have a meeting in the morning, I'm glad to see you are doing so well, Y/N" Steve said as he started clearing the table.
"Ah man, did I ruin your date? I didn't mean to" Cob exclaims as he gives you a wink "you stay, I'll grab a hotel and you two can be as loud as you want!" while clapping Steve on the back.
You gasp and look at Steve, who is starting to blush "seriously Cob? We are colleagues, get your mind out of the gutter!  I'm sorry, he's just… I'm not sure what's wrong with him but he's just an annoying big brother" you smirk at Steve.
"Wait, are you telling me that you don't find my sister attractive?!  She's beautiful and tough and incredibly smart, but she's not good enough for you?"
Steve is now bright red and looking between you and your brother, trying to figure how he became the bad guy in the room "No! I didn't say that, Y/N is gorgeous and I...I...I actually came here to ask her to dinner with me tomorrow night." Steve states as he tries to take control of the conversation and looks at you.
"I was hoping to ask you properly but I was so flustered when you came to the door with no clothes on and you are so beautiful I almost fainted at the sight of you" he confesses with a shy grin.
"You what!?" Cob looks between the two of you with his eyebrows raised in shock and trying to understand what's going on.
"Not like that you idiot! I just got out of the tub and was in a bathrobe. Ugh, why are like this?" shaking your head at your brother you begin to push him down the hall. "You can stay in my spare room, but please just go away, you are making things weird"
"It was nice to meet you Captain" he yells as you push him into the room and slam the door in his face.
Walking back into the dining room you look up at Steve "I'm sorry about him, he has no filter. And I’m pretty sure his goal in life is to embarrass and humiliate me.  Dinner tomorrow would be nice, I would love to.” you smile up at him.
Did I really just agree to a date with Captain America? Maybe I have a concussion or a fever dream.   That would make sense, since it’s unlikely for your family to drop everything and show up because you got a little hurt on a mission.
You were broken out of your thoughts when Steve responded  “Great!  I will pick you up at 7?”
“That sounds good, I’ll see you then” you walk him to the door. Before he leaves he leans down and places a kiss to your cheek.  You are sure you have turned bright red from the action and try to suppress your huge smile splitting across your face.
As you are locking the door you hear Cob behind you clearing his throat.  “Did I just see Captain Hot Ass just kiss my little sister?  HOLY SHIT!  This is incredible!  I’ve always had the hots for him, and hoping deep down he was at least bi, but now I can live vicariously through you!” he taunts you as you head toward your bedroom and glare at him.
“What is that supposed to mean?  It was a kiss on the cheek and 1 dinner date, don’t get your hopes up Cob” you shake your head as you start to change into a tank and sleep shorts.
“Don’t you dare do this to yourself, you deserve to have some fun and be happy.   Don’t reduce what that asshole did to you as who you are.  That was him tearing you down because he is a pathetic excuse of a human being, that was not your fault”  he said following you into your room.
You wanted to believe him, believe that one night was just a huge mistake, misunderstanding or whatever, but ever since then you haven’t had a decent relationship.  You have been waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the person you like to realize that you are not as innocent as you look and high tail it as far away from you as possible.
That’s how it’s been for the last 3 years and you doubted America’s boy scout would be any different, but until that time came, you would try to just live in the moment and enjoy his company.   He was kind and strong and smart and confident and so damn sexy that you thought you were living in a fantasy everytime he looked at you with those piercing blue eyes.
“I know Cob, but the fact is my love life has gone to shit since that night so I’m not getting my hopes up.   Now, if you can shut up, I’ll let you watch a movie in my room, I had a rough day and could use some big bro cuddles” you tell him with a soft smile.
You loved your brothers, they were always there for you no matter what, but right now you didn’t want to hear another word.
“Whatever you want, pumpkin!” he smirked as he climbed into bed and pulled you close to his chest.  “Ok, so we need to lighten the mood, how about ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’?” he asked while grabbing the remote.
“And this is why you are the best gay brother a person could ask for” you settled in and knew you were in good hands no matter what the outcome of the date with Steve or the meeting with Nicky might be.

Tumblr media
There he was. Tall, bronze, fit and fine as hell. I watched as he made his way through the office shaking hands and sharing laughs with anyone he walked past, except for me. Taking a small sip of my Raspberry tea, I turned my leather chair towards my desktop. Like clockwork, he walked past my desk, tapped it twice and nodded in my direction. It was our game. A game we’d played since we caught a glimpse of each other at the student union during our undergraduate fashion studies. We didn’t speak in public, preferring to keep our interactions up against closed doors, underneath shitty department store bed sheets and the backseats of small vehicles. Even when the interactions were supposed to cease following my placement as a stylist in the men’s division of his clothing company, we kept the code and vowed to keep our ‘relationship’ outwardly platonic. Well, most of the time.
I rolled my eyes hard enough to give myself a headache before picking up the phone that had been ringing on my desk for several moments.
“Roman Men’s Division, this is Elodie.” I cooed while fiddling with the cross hanging from my earring.
“Can I get a number one wi-”
“Get off my phone Paisley!” I said trying to contain my laughter.
“Damn, a bitch can’t call her friend and say good morning?”
“No, but she can tell her boyfriend to stop using the pink towels with her friend’s initials on ‘em.”
“Don’t play with me girl.” She answered smacking her teeth on the other end. “That is not my man.”
Paisley was my unnecessarily loud, fashion-forward, sexually liberated best friend. We met during our time at NYU and ended up following each other to the beautiful city of Los Angeles. I took a second to laugh at my statement before responding to her remark.
“Okay, I’m sorry.” I took a deep breath to calm down and then continued. “What do you want Miss. Prince?”
“Yeah, you better clean it up. I’ll cut you. Look, I’m only calling to ask my bestest friend in the whole wide world if she’ll come out with me tonight?”
“Only if the destination doesn’t include loud music, weed, alcohol and one or more of your sketchy homeboys.”
“See, first of all, my niggas are not sketchy, they’re urban. There’s a difference. Second, bitch are you trynna go out or go to church?”
“I mean, I haven’t been to church in a wh-“
“You know this isn’t me asking you right?” She said interrupting statement followed by a knowing sigh from me.
“Unfortunately…”
“Glad we’re on the same page. Avalon. 10 o’clock. I’m borrowing your things. Tootles bitch.”
“Wait, Paisley! Don’t go in my-“ My request to leave my things alone fell on the silent end of the receiver before I could even finish my statement. I sighed lightly before placing the phone back on its receiver.
“Elodie.”
Shit. I took a look at the intercom on my phone before pressing the button designated for response.
“Yes, Mr. Roman?” I answered rolling my eyes and speaking in a pseudo-Fran Drescher voice.
“Cute. Can I see you in my office?”
“I’d rather not. I try to stay away from private meetings with my superiors. Would you be opposed to meeting in the large conference room?”
“Oh really? Is this before or after fuck your superior in Cabo?”
I could feel that stupid smile spreading across his stupid face while he squinted his stupid eyes.
“No response?” He asked chuckling. “That’s a first. See you in 5. Bring coffee on your way here.”
“I hate you.”
“I’m sure.”
I took my time getting to his office in an attempt to gain my composure. Have you ever had to sit across from a man that has given you earth-shattering orgasms for sport? It turns into a competition of who can tease the other into frustration and submission, and I was always on the losing end.
I took the sharp right into his office and sat in one of the chairs positioned in front of his desk. He took a quick look at me and laughed. “My coffee?”
“Still in the pot.”
He laughed again and sat at the edge of his desk.  “You try so hard. You know that?”
“What are you talking about Jermaine? It’s easy for me to hate you.”
“You can hate me, but you still want me. You miss me. You miss this.” He took a quick look down at the lap I had grown to love and despise and then back at me.
I kissed my teeth and opened the manila folder that was resting in my lap. “Fashion Week New York is in a few days, and I need to finalize your travel arrangements.”
He did that stupid laugh again and made his way around is desk and back into his chair.
“Okay, Elodie. What are the arrangements so far?”
I cut my eyes at him while sliding the necessary papers out of the folder.
“Let’s see. You leave LAX at 12 p.m. on Saturday, arrive at JFK at around 5:30 p.m. and check in at the Ritz-Central Park is at 7:00 p.m.” I took a quick look up to see if he was still listening and found him looking directly into my eyes.  My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly cleared my throat. He slightly chuckled and shifted his weight in his chair.
“Seems like everything is good. What’s missing?” He asked with a slight smirk as if he didn’t know. He always takes an assistant on his trips. Last time it was me, and I knew all too well what comes from just a weekend with Mr. Roman.
“Your assistant is missing. Here are a few of your options,” I said sliding profiles of the available assistants for the weekend. “I recommend Tiana. She’s new, but she’s thorough. Chaz is a close second. He can dress you-“
“No.”
“Excuse me?” He neatly stacked the papers before dropping them in the waste bin adjacent to his desk. “What are you doing? I spent a lot of time on those!”
“You’re coming. We have a rapport, personal business aside. This is an important event. I need your expertise.”
“You want someone you think you can control.” I corrected.
“Don’t do this, El.”
“It is Elodie. The answer is no.”
A small pocket of silence presented itself as we looked at each other, neither of us willing to concede.
I knew I was being difficult. It’s like I can’t control my words when I’m around him. My emotions go into overdrive, and I’m a mess of feelings that moves from lust filled hatred to absolute rage and back to soul-crushing sadness before I can form a sentence.
“Think about it. Give me your decision before the close of business tomorrow. If you truly do not want to accompany me, then make sure that there is a worthy replacement to stand in for you. You can go now.” He took one last look at me and, for a second, I thought I saw sincerity in his eyes.
I silently nodded before gathering all of my things and heading towards the door.
“Jermaine?”
“A decision so soon?” He mused before curling the corners of his mouth into a smirk.
“Uh, no. Your tie looks really bad with that suit. I would consider changing it before anyone sees you. It is…a mess.”
“Paisley!” I screamed into my apartment.
I gave her a key in case of emergency two months ago, and while there has yet to be an emergency that would require her abrupt entry into my home, she has been here unannounced on several occasions. Now, with Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” spilling from the Beats Pill positioned in the center of my glass coffee table, it seems as if she has added to those occasions.
“Paisley, why do you never call? You don’t live here!”
“It was an emergency!” she whined while examining her feet in the full sized mirror across the room. Without permission, Paisley had removed two separate pairs of Jimmy Choo heeled sandals from my closet along with a pair of jeans. “So what do you think? Left foot or right foot?”
“I think you should take my shoes off and dress for the weather.”
“El, a hoe never gets cold. Left or right?”
“Right.”
“Then left.” I rolled my eyes before flopping across my bed face first.
The Jermaine decision invaded my thoughts from the moment I stepped out of his office until now. What was keeping me from going? Did I still have feelings for him? Did he still have feelings for me? Why did I-?
“EL!” Paisley screamed, yanking me from my thoughts. “Damn, bitch. What’s got your g-string up your ass? I’m asking you about the club and you staring in space like you having a vision. What you thinking about Raven Symone?”
“Jermaine asked me to go to New York with him? I don’t kn-“
“Jermaine? Fine Jermaine? Jermaine Roman?”
“Yes, that Jer-“
“GIRL! I heard Jermaine got that stroke,” she exclaimed while body rolling against the air. “Either you go or put me on the plane. All I need is five minutes and a grapefruit.”
“Would you let me finish?” She quickly made a zipping motion across her lips before joining me on the bed. “Damn. Thank you. First, yes that Jermaine. We’ve known each other since undergrad and – “
“You knew him at NYU? And didn’t tell me? Did you smash? I hope you smashed.”
“I didn’t tell you because he was dating someone at the time. It was a fling that lasted way too long.” I shuddered while simultaneously feeling my core heat up at the flashbacks of our meetings in his Acura, and in the kitchen of my apartment, and my fellowship at a local bridal shop, and the Magic Johnson theatre, and the one time in the bathroom of a house party in Flatbush. “And yes. There was sex. So much sex.”
Paisley let out a high-pitched squeal in anticipation for the rest of the details. “So why not go! Be on your white woman, Sex in the City shit. Elodie Bradshaw out this bitch!”
“I honestly don’t know. What if he tries to rekindle the fling?”
“Then let him! You are 29, girl. Live a little! Being stuck up in your office all day has done nothing but make you boring. Let his fine ass knock the cob webs off that thang!”
“It hasn’t been that long!” I  lied. It had been a while. Long enough for the memories of another human occupying the space on the neatly made-up side of your bed. “So, should I go?”
“You already know my answer,” Paisley responded with her back turned to me. She was in my closet against, lightly running her fingers over the dresses that she had planned to ask my permission to wear. “Try it out. If it’s boof, then so be it. But, it could be amazing. You won’t know until you get your ass on that plane.”
Her words swirled around my head as I tried to search for a reason to protest. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one. I wouldn’t know until I tried. Thoughts of protest transitioned into fantasies of a week in New York. Maybe I could be El Bradshaw. I’m not even sure what that means. I’ve never seen that show. Still, how lit would it be to sit next to Jermaine as models waltzed up and down the runway in the most elegant designs.
“EARTH TO ELODIE!”
“Paisley, every time I start to think about some good shit, here you come interrupting. What do you want?”
“You need to get out your feelings and get dressed! Trev has his set tonight and said he can get us in but we need to be there in an hour.”
“Trev?” I said scrunching my face.
“My guy Trevor. We met that time I spent two weeks in film school. Anyway, he DJ’s on the side. None of that matters. Get your ass up and get dressed!”
“I am an adult, P! You don’t tell me what to do!” I yelled while running into the bathroom. “And take my damn shoes off!”
