Brazilian anon here! AND YESSS! I totally agree with your take on how dry English can be! I study foreign languages in college and sometimes we have to translate something from Portuguese to English, and a lot of times the text feels kind of...... empty??? due to so many “hidden” meanings being lost in translation. It’s kinda sad really :/
Also I need to say that you make me want to go back to studying Japanese so baddddd 😩 Like, I can recognize a few words when people say them, but I can’t learn how to read kanji/hiragana for shit and it’s what I wanted to know the most 😔 maybe someday.......
hi friend!!! YES that’s what im talking about!!! there’s no extra layer of depth in english like in other languages, especially when other languages draw on nuance embedded in cultural awareness so it does feel “empty” 😭 (not to say english doesn’t have words like this but it’s different)
honestly I'm coasting by on 3 years of jpn and the fact that I absorbed both jpn and korean when I was younger bc the only channel my brother would let us watch was the anime channel (dragon ball, school rumble, kenichi, all that other good stuff) without subtitles 😭 and i literally couldn’t understand a thing but that + knowing korean kinda laid the foundation for the structural and grammatical aspect of jpn
but im far from fluent or even intermediate. i can speak and understand and read but i literally cannot recall any kanji aside from the basics LMAO
if you wanna get back into it i’ve found that learning the kanji to japanese songs helps (i’ve been slowly making my way through all the YOASOBI songs) and this post!! lays out some really good resources!! even one kanji a day is progress!! also I've been following a bunch of jpn twt artists so reading their tweets and looking up the kanji they use helps me with "everyday" jpn!!
