This is not actually entirely true! There were/are tape decks that had the ability to skip tracks—my family definitely owned one, though just the one. The portable walkman-type players that I used as a kid did not have this feature, but by the early 90s I think it started becoming slightly more common. There’s a Reddit thread here where someone asks about them. In general, esp pre-90s though, you would have to suffer the fast forward, rewind minigame lol

Younger writers. Please, just know that you could not skip to different songs on a cassette tape, that’s CDs. With tapes you pressed fast forward or rewind and prayed.

Also, VHS tapes did not have menu screens. Your only options were play, fast forward, rewind, pause, stop, or eject.
