everyone talks about how great the depiction of mental health and sexuality and Jewish rep and etc etc etc is in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but I think the most amazing thing about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that goes unsaid too often is how trustworthy it is. every single time I see something that’s offensive or uncomfortable or cruel that would get a free pass in another show, CXG instead goes “I’m glad you picked up on that, and since we respect our audience, we’re going to resolve it.”
like Darryl and Maya’s relationship, he hated her ever since she came out as bi right after he spent a whole musical number trying to get his cishet friends to be as enthusiastic as he was about his sexuality. his constant bullying reminded me how Parks and Rec treated Jerry, like he was worthless trash for being a normal person. that was the whole joke. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend instead had the consideration to go “yes Darryl was wrong to treat Maya this way. thank you for picking up what we put down. now we’re going to address it and this situation will be resolved in a healthy way, not in a way that’s just a half decent apology before he goes back to being cruel for the laughs.”
or when Rebecca nearly fulfilled the self-hating Jew trope (though Remember That We Suffered is HILARIOUS) except then the show went “you’re right, that IS offensive for general audiences. now let’s take a look at what the REAL problem is.”
it’s just so REFRESHING to watch a show that respects the fact that I pay attention to how characters are affected by each other, rather than dropping them into positions where they have to do something out of character because the narrative needs it to happen
