Timothee wheeled you out of the hospital, careful not to roll you over any cracks or bumps on the pavement.

“I can walk, you know?” You said in feigned annoyance. Timothee was always over the top when it came to protecting you, but now, you feared it’d be even worse.

He did have reason for his concern, five days prior, the Uber you took was involved in a 4 car pile up, trapping you inside the car. You were left with two broken ribs, several fractures, a few cuts to your face (requiring stitches) and a concussion. Timothee was already waiting at the hospital when you arrived and slept in your room during your entire stay.

Still you said, “you’re not letting me go anywhere? Seems a bit dramatic don’t you think?”

Your wheel chair came to a halt, causing you to lean forward and wince at the pain from your ribs. Timothee spun your chair around and kneeled down to your level, “you could have died, you know that?” He was serious. Dead serious, you smirked at the thought, but shook away your dark humor. His eyes bounced between the two of yours, shaking slightly, “so, call it dramatic if you want, but at least for right now, you’re not going anywhere without me.”

A week went by and Timothee barely let you leave your bed. You finally convinced him to let you leave your bedroom, telling him that laying on the couch wasn’t much different from laying on your bed and there was no possible way an accident could occur in the 10 foot stretch of carpet between your bedroom the living room.

You understood what he was trying to do and he was right. The doctor warned you that any physical activity (sexual or otherwise) could further damage your ribs and land you in the hospital again…but that didn’t change the fact that you wanted him, and right now, at least, he didn’t want you. You stood, fighting back the urge to cry and without saying a word, made your way back to your room. Timothee tried to grab your hand, but you moved just in time for him to miss it.

“Y/n, don’t be that way please,” he called to you in a tone that suggested he knew your feelings were hurt. You heard his footsteps behind you, but even if you’re still somewhat injured state, you were able to make it to the bedroom and shut the door in front of him before he got a chance to enter. He came in directly after you and you cursed yourself for not thinking to lock the door.

Gently, you laid yourself down on the bed, wincing as your ribs pushed into the mattress. Timothee climbed onto the bed, hovering over your body, careful not to put a hand on your body. You rolled your eyes and turned onto the side that had significantly less broken bones.

“Y/n, look at me.” He said so sweetly you could have given into him right then and there.

“No,” you said, attempting to nonchalantly wipe a tear that had finally fallen from your eye.

“I know what you’re thinking, and it’s not true, so stop.” He fell next to you on the mattress, and for the first time placed a hand to your back, gently keeping you in place.

It had barely been a week since Jensen got back from Vancouver and in one week everything had gone bad. There was something happening with the brewery and as a result tensions were high. This in turn caused the the married couple to snap at each other often. The last couple of days have been really bad as Jensen and Y/N kept fighting non stop. It was taking a toll on her and she didn’t know what to do to help him. Every time she tried, he would snap at her and it would result in a full blown argument. This time was no different.

“Damn Y/N! God it was so peaceful living alone back in Vancouver!” Yelled Jensen.

“Oh yeah?! Well maybe you should’ve just stayed back then!” Shouted Y/N as she stormed out of the master bedroom.

With tears blurring her vision and blind anger consuming her, Y/N failed to pay attention to where she was going, causing her to trip on the stairs and take a fall. On her way down, she hit her head against the wall and landed with a thud on the ground floor. Her right ankle was askew and pain shot through her like wildfire as she screamed. She barely noticed Jensen run down the stair and crouch down beside her worriedly asking her questions.

“Y/N! Oh god! What hurts, baby? Talk to me!” He asked frantically.

“My leg and my head.” She mumbled out, her head feeling a little dizzy.

Jensen went to hold her ankle to take a proper look at it, the action only made her yell out in pain more. “Shit I’m so sorry, honey! I think it’s broken.” He said.

He pulled out his phone dialling 911, “Hi I need an ambulance immediately! My wife fell down the stairs and I think she broke her ankle and might have a concussion.” He explained, giving them their address.

Y/N was close to falling asleep but was immediately woken up with insistent pats on her cheek.

“Hey, stay awake sweetie. You might have a concussion and falling asleep will make it worse.”  

“Everything hurts, Jay.” She said doing her best to keep her eyes open. The tears streamed down her face quickly wiped away by Jensen.

“I know, baby. I know. The ambulance will be here in a bit.” He said not leaving her side.

“C-can I sit up?”

“Just stay still okay? You’re going to be fine.” Jensen said carding his fingers through her hair while he held her hand with his other one.

The paramedics finally arrived and Jensen rode with her to the hospital.

12 hours later they finally made it back home at 1:30 in the morning. The doctor insisted on keeping Y/N in the hospital that long to make sure her concussion cleared up. He put her leg in a cast and prescribed some pain killers along with strict orders for plenty of rest for the ankle to heal. Lucky for her it was a small fracture that should heal on its own within a few weeks if she didn’t stress it out too much. She was, however, asked to come back couple of days later for a PRP injection to accelerate the recovery.

Jensen carried her inside the house and placed her on the couch. He shut the main door and went into the kitchen to bring Y/N her medicines and some water. Y/N knew there was something bothering him. He had been quiet the entire time and barely looked at her. She was feeling more and more guilty especially after the fight they had this morning. Her thoughts were interrupted when Jensen offered her a glass of water along with the pill. She took it and returned the glass back to Jensen who took it back to the sink, still avoiding any eye contact.

He came back to her to carry her to their bedroom when she stopped him.

“Jay, wait.”

“What’s wrong? You okay?” He asked fearing that the doctors missed something.

“I’m fine, but you clearly are not. Talk to me Jay.” She asked worriedly.

“Y/N it’s 1:30 in the morning and you’re hurt and in pain, and I’m exhausted. Can we please not do this now?” He asked rubbing his face.

Y/N felt a pang of hurt go through her heart. She had really messed up with the fight. Jensen was right he would’ve been more at peace without her.

“Okay.” She whispered and allowed him to carry her up to their room.

That morning Y/N woke up late thanks to her medication that made her drowsy. The space next to her was empty and suddenly the events that occurred the previous day crashed on her all at once, breaking her heart. Her leg was throbbing and she was doing her best to keep the tears at bay as she sat up and placed her feet on the floor.

Jensen walked into the room with a tray of breakfast, “Where do you think you’re going?” He asked chiding her.

“I thought-“

“I was making you breakfast in bed, Y/N. Now get back in and relax, okay?”

She got back in bed and Jensen placed the tray on her lap and sat in front of her. “How are you feeling today?” He asked rubbing her knee.

“Leg hurts a little, but my head is much better.” She replied taking a bite.

“Good. Eat up so you can take your painkillers.” He smiled softly at her.

“Okay.” Y/N back smiled at him.

Once breakfast was over Jensen grabbed the tray and handed her the medicines. He then helped her into the shower so they could take a bath. He covered her cast with plastic to it wouldn’t get wet and placed a stool in the shower so Y/N could sit comfortably. He helped her strip her clothes and proceeded to do the same. Nothing was exchanged between them which was odd. There was this lingering tension and Y/N didn’t know how to break it. Her mind was racing thinking of ways to apologise, and just as he proceeded to scrub shampoo in her hair a tear slipped from her eye. Her sniffle didn’t go unnoticed by hm and he immediately crouched down in front of her.

“Y/N, what’s wrong? Did I hurt you?” He asked concern filling his eyes.

She shook her head sniffling some more.

“Then what’s wrong, sweetheart?”

“I’m sorry” she whispered.

“What for?”

“I’m sorry I’m so overbearing. I’m sorry, Jay. I shouldn’t have pushed you with the brewery and now you want to go back to Vancouver to get away from me. And then I had to get hurt and you’re stuck here with me. I’m sorry it’s not so peaceful here.” Her outburst stunned him.

“Y/N…”

“I’m sorry!” She was clutching onto him as tears fell rapidly down her cheeks. Jensen hugged her tightly to him, uncaring of the shampoo in her hair.

“Baby, you listen to me. I don’t want to get away from you. I’ll never want that, Y/N. I’m sorry I said that. I was angry and tired with everything that was happening and I took it out on you when you were only trying to help. It’s my fault baby. Vancouver sucks without you there. And I’m even more glad I’m here when you’re hurt. I’d hate myself if I wasn’t here for you. I already hate myself caz you’re hurt because of me.”

“It’s not your fault, Jay. It was a freak accident.”

“Feels like it is. I caused this indirectly.” He whispered, closing his eyes tightly. “God, when I heard you scream and saw you at the bottom of the stairs, my heart nearly stopped.”

“No you didn’t. I wasn’t paying attention. But I’m okay, Jay. Nothing too bad happened.”

“Yeah. Thank god for that.”

Y/N kissed him softly. When she pulled away from him she giggled.

“What?” He asked amused.

She scooped the suds on his nose left by her on her finger and showed it to him. He chuckled at that and kissed her nose. “Let’s get cleaned up. We have a busy day today.”

“Oh?” Y/N asked amused.

“Yep! A whole day dedicated to R&R!” He grinned.

“Can we watch The Lord of the Rings again?” Y/N asked with puppy eyes that she learnt from Jared.

The next couple of days went by in a blink and the dreaded day finally arrived. It was time for Y/N to take a PRP injection. With lots of coaxing and promise of mind blowing sex, Jensen finally got her into the car and drove her to the hospital.

The doctor made her lie down on the bed and got her prepped.

“We’re going to first draw some blood from your arm and then we will be transferring that blood into your leg. It’s so the extra platelets can help the injury heal faster.” He explained, making Y/N shudder.

Jensen moved closer to Y/N and she gripped her hand tightly. The doctor left the room for a while allowing Y/N to panic freely.

“Jay, I don’t want to do this!” She said frantically. “It’s not just one, it’s two needles poking me!” She said looking mortified. Jensen chuckled at her, “It’s not funny, Jay! Quit laughing at me!” She glared.

“I’m sorry, baby but it is a little funny. Besides, Y/N, it’ll be over before you know it. I promise, sweetheart.” He tried comforting her.

“You’re a jerk, Jay and I want to leave. Take me home, please!” She cried getting up.

Jensen pushed her back down gently and was about to say something when the doctor came back in with the stuff. Y/N was trying not to go into a full blown panic. Needles freaked her out big time and this was one of the worst things she’d had to do.

The doctor took a cotton swap with anti septic and cleaned the area making her flinch. Her grip on Jensen tightened and he kissed her forehead. “Just look at me, baby. Think about something else. Like what do you want to do this weekend, hmm?”

“I don’t know!” She looked at him wide eyed. Trying to play along but it was getting increasingly harder.

Just as the needle pierced through her she shut her eyes tightly, holding her breath in. She felt Jensen caress her cheeks with his thumb as he cupped them. “Breathe baby. It’ll go away.” He whispered.

“Almost done, Y/N” The doctor said smiling sympathetically at her.

She felt him gently withdraw the needle and she let out a breathe of relief when it was done. But that didn’t last long. She remembered the hard part was yet to come. The damn doc had to stick the little bastard into her leg and it was going to be 10 times worse.

She felt Jensen squeeze her hand, “Don’t think about it. Just keep talking to me ok?”

“Let’s go visit Jared and Gen this weekend.” She said, giving him a small smile.

“Yeah, that’s a great idea.” He smiled widely.

Y/N and Jensen kept chatting and she didn’t notice when the doctor was near her feet. The needled pierced her leg just above the cast and she whimpered in pain. “Son of bi-!” She exclaimed.

“There all done!” Grinned the doctor.

“See? That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Said Jensen smirking at her.

“Wipe that look off your face or I’ll do it for you.” She glared at him.

The doctor chuckled at her, “Well you’re good to go, Y/N. You just need to come back a week from now and we can remove the cast.”

“Can’t wait. This thing is itchy as hell.” You said, thanking him.

“And it smells” mumbled Jensen to himself earning a glare from Y/N.

An hour later they were back home comfortably cuddled up on the sofa. Y/N was flipping through the channels trying to find something good. Jensen groaned beside her as she changed it once more.

“Just pick one!” He exclaimed throwing his head back.

“I’m trying! There’s nothing good on!”

“I’m booored, N/N!”

“Urgh fine! You pick then!” She said throwing the remote into his lap.

He settled on some silly rom com, making Y/N look pointedly at him. “Really? This one?”

He grinned at her and she squeaked when he shifted her in a blink of an eye. She was sitting on his lap with her leg carefully placed so it wouldn’t hurt.

“What are you doing, Jay?” She asked suspiciously.

“Snogging to silly rom coms like teenagers?” The grin not leaving his face.

Y/N giggled at him, “You’re such a boy!”

“You love it.”

“Nahh.” She said with a cheshire cat grin. But soon started laughing as Jensen tickled her.

“Jay! Stop please!”

“Nope!”

“I’ll make you smell my cast if you don’t!” She managed to gasp out between laughter.

“Yuck! Keep that thing away from me, woman! That stench is poison!” He exclaimed with wide eyes, immediately stopping the tickle attack.

Y/N laughed at his reaction and kissed him hard. They spent the rest of the day snogging to crap TV.

A week later Y/N was back in that dreadful hospital room. She got her foot x-rayed and cleared for the cast to come off and she couldn’t be happier. Jensen was sitting on the chair beside her reading the stuff on the wall. Y/N was fiddling with her phone when the doctor came in with the equipments to cut open her cast.

When Y/N noticed the equipment, she freaked out. “W-what’s that? I thought you had to cut the cast open!”

The doctor chuckled at her, “This is to cut the cast open. That thing is too thick for scissors. We need something stronger.”

“Oh no no. You keep that thing away from me, she said in shock. She moved backwards in bed.

“You won’t feel a thing, I promise.” Said the doctor looking at Jensen for support.

“Y/N come on. This is the last time you need to be here. So let’s get this over it, huh?” He said gripping your hand.

Y/N watched in fear as the doctor got everything set up. He turned on the electric cutter and got ready to cut open the cast. Y/N went into a full blown panic attack and began thrashing around.

Jensen was holding onto her. “Honey, you gotta breathe for me. Look at me, Y/N.”

“No! No please. I can’t keep doing this, Jay! I’m constantly in pain and now he’s going to cut my leg! I like my leg!”

“Baby! He’s not going to cut your leg!” Jensen talked over her. “Look at me, Y/N. Open those eyes and look at me.” He pleaded.

Y/N reluctantly opened her eyes and looked into her husband’s green ones. It calmed her down for a second.

“There’s my girl.” He whispered. “I promise it won’t hurt.”

“Y/N, it won’t even get any close to your leg.” The doctor explained. “It’s just vibrations that will break open the cast.”

Y/N still looked unconvinced and stared at the monstrosity in his hands. Jensen cupped her face between his palms and kissed her forehead. “Do you trust me, Y/N?”

“Yes.” She whispered teary eyed.

“Then do this honey. It’ll be over soon.”

“O-okay.” She said taking a deep breathe and letting the doctor get to work.

20 mins later the cast was off and the doctor was checking her ankle once more. He then decided to put it in a brace since it was still swollen quite a bit and was painful.

“It’s going to hurt for a while, but I think it’s strong enough for you to start physical therapy. Just keep icing it and soaking it in hot water to bring down the swelling.”

“Thank you.” Smiled Y/N. “And I’m sorry you had to witness my freak out.”

“Oh don’t worry about it. I’ve seen people react worse.” He chuckled and left the room after shaking hands with Jensen.

“I’m sorry I was so panicky, Jay.” Mumbled Y/N looking guilty.

Jensen let out a booming laugh, surprising her.

“Why are you laughing?” She asked, confused.

“Y-you thought he wanted to cut your leg off!” He laughed harder.

“Shuttup, Ackles! It was scary okay! I’ve never done this before.” She looked at him grumpily. But she wasn’t really mad.

“Aww my poor gimpy!” He said pinching both her cheeks, making her swat his hands away.

“I’m not a gimp anymore!” She fake glared at him.

“True. I’m going to miss my little gimp. I could do whatever I wanted to her. But now she can limp away so fast.” He grinned cheekily.

“Ha ha! You’re fucking Robin Williams!” She said rolling her eyes.

“Oh the hubris! You’re not Robbin Williams, honey” He said his grin getting wider.

“Just take me home, you dork.” She shook her head at him fighting off a smile.

How would a modern au Arthur feel about a female reader who had an invisible illness that caused a lot of pain on the daily? How would he be? Feel?

Hmm, this one may be a bit more challenging. I’ve never written a modern Arthur, but I’ll give it my best shot. 

Arthur puts his grooming brush away and pats his horse affectionately. He loves his little ranch he lives on. He wouldn’t live anywhere else, especially not in the city just beyond the mountain range. Sure, there’s more work and a lot more money in the city, but a lot less happiness and love. He grew up with his uncles Dutch and Hosea after his parents died in a car accident when he was a kid, working on their ranch. Of course, they showed him a few tricks in how to make the most money out of their work and how to do it on the sly. 

Unfortunately for him, Hosea passed away a few years ago due to cancer and Dutch was never the same after that. He ended up just disappearing out of the blue one day and Arthur was never able to contact him again after that. He hoped Dutch was just off trying to find himself now that Hosea’s gone. His own life became rather lonely as he worked on the ranch alone. Since it wasn’t huge, he managed to do it just fine. 

Then he met you at the only gas station in town. You were hopelessly lost trying to find your way to one of the lakes up in the mountains for a peaceful and quiet weekend, but service was spotty out this far and you’ve never been good at reading paper maps. Arthur was there and he helped point you in the right direction. He could see you were rattled because you’d been so lost. Not only that, you were taking the weekend off in order to get away from your own troubles. Your boyfriend at the time was abusive in the emotional sense and you’d just discovered he’d been cheating on you. 

It was pretty late in the day by the time Arthur helped you get sorted and the town’s so small there’s no hotel or even bed and breakfast. It’s all just ranches and farms out here, plus a trailer park but no one goes there. He doesn’t like the idea of someone who doesn’t know the area traveling into the mountains when it’s dark. The roads are windy and several of them are dirt. Many inexperienced drivers have crashed their cars on those roads. He offers you to come home with him, have a beer and something to eat and then says he has a spare room in the barn (where he used to sleep as a boy) that you’re welcome to. Relieved to finally get some help, you accepted. 

The two of you got on so well that the next morning, you asked for Arthur’s number. He was incredibly attractive with his rugged cowboy hat and boots. You’ve only dated soft city boys before, but you always wondered what it was like living out here where no one can bother you. Arthur gave you his number and then said he’d love to go to this lake with you as he knew the roads better. 

After that, you two started dating. It was difficult at first because you lived in the city two hours away. However, you video chatted with each other almost every night and grew incredibly close. Every weekend, one of you would drive to see the other and spend the weekend together. Arthur was a perfect gentleman. Kind, thoughtful, rugged and rough in just the right places. One time your ex even barged into your apartment and accused you of cheating right in front of Arthur. He went home with a bruised jaw and split lip. 

Arthur smiles as he thinks about the last time he saw you. It was nearly a year ago he bumped into you and he’s never been happier. You ended up getting a remote job that allowed you to work from home mostly, so you moved into his ranch home. You’ve never been happier. Sure, the drive to the local grocery store isn’t as convenient as the city and if you want to do anything fun, there’s always at least a thirty minute drive to the largest town, but you love the quiet, the peace. Arthur’s a huge bonus too, of course. 

Arthur finishes filling the troughs with water and then goes to turn off the hose. You left this morning to go to the city to do one of your monthly days in the office. Your job requires you to come in once a month for paperwork, attend meetings and so forth, but it’s not too bad. Arthur hates the days you’re gone. You’ve brought a new light to his life to fill the absence of Hosea and Dutch. He couldn’t imagine being happier than he is now. 

Just as he finished rolling up the hose, his cell phone rings. Since the weather’s clear, service is actually pretty decent. He pulls out his phone, expecting to see an unknown number from a likely scanner. Instead, it comes up as the number for a hospital three towns over. His stomach drops and he picks it up. 

The voice tells him you’ve been in a serious accident. A driver suspected of being on drugs hit you head on at high speed and totaled your car. You’re in critical condition and the person on the phone asks he come see you. Of course, he doesn’t hesitate. He grabs the keys to his truck and drives as fast as he can to the hospital you’re at. 

When he sees you in the bed, tubes all along your body and scratches on your face from the broken glass, he breaks down. He’s so frightened about what’s going to happen. The nurse explains you suffered a concussion but they doubt you’ll be out more than a day or two. You’ve suffered a broken hand, wrist and a fracture in your sternum, but luckily they don’t think any of your organs were injured. Arthur stays by your side night and day, fretting over you. 

When you finally wake, he’s overjoyed. He wants nothing more than to hold you, but he knows how much pain  you’re in and how broken your body is. Of course, because of the pain killers, you don’t feel much. After another day in the hospital, the doctor deems you well enough to return home but orders you to bed rest for the next several weeks so your sternum can heal. 

Arthur’s the best caregiver with you. He comes and checks on you every hour in the bed, making sure you have enough to eat. He even moves the TV into the room so you can watch something if you want. Anything you want, he’ll get it for you. He checks his phone constantly as he works in case you’ve texted him. He’s so gentle and loving, you don’t even feel scared anymore.

After a week has passed though, you start feeling horrible pain in your chest. It’s not from your sternum either. Instead it feels like someone is grabbing your lower ribs and trying to crush them. It’s a horrible pain and Arthur, fearing the worst, takes you back to the hospital. Tests are run and scans are taken, but unfortunately the doctor can’t find any explanation for your pain. An exploratory surgery is even done but still, no answer. A few more screenings are taken and then they send you home with more painkillers and promises they’ll try to find what’s causing it. 

Weeks go by and nothing. Arthur has called the hospital and even yelled at people trying to find the answers, but nothing. Your injuries have all healed but the pain in your ribs is still there. It fades though, allowing you to do work around the ranch and your own job, but at least once a day, a wave of horrible pain will slam into you, forcing you to sit down wherever you’re at and clutch your midriff. It often causes you to cry. 

Arthur almost seems to have a sixth sense for when you’re having an episode. He finds you every time. He sets down whatever he’s doing, sits down next to you and pulls you into his arm. He lets you cry into his shoulder, pets your hair and whispers promises that the answer will be found. He wishes he could do something, anything, to help you. Unfortunately, there’s nothing more he can do other than support you like this and he hates it. He does everything in his power to make you feel better. 

Sometimes he can be a bit of a pest with how protective he’s become since the accident. Occasionally you’ll try to get up on the horse he lets you ride, but he’ll try and argue with you about it, stating if you have an episode, you’ll fall off. You know he’s just trying to protect you, but sometimes it comes off as if he thinks you can’t do it. 

Finally the doctor calls and explains they still can’t find an answer to your pain. They’re sure it’s some kind of injury, but they believe the episodes will begin to fade over time as your body heals. 

Another year passes and while the episodes are not as common, only every couple of weeks, you still have them. The doctor prescribed medicine for you to take during one of these episodes that will help the episode pass sooner than they used to.

Arthur’s been so good to you since the accident. He’s not as protective anymore, but if he sees you start to have one, he’ll grab you and help you sit down. If you’re on your horse, he’ll help you off and just hold you until it passes. He always makes one of your favorite meals after you’ve had an episode. He just wants you to know that he cares about you. He’s easily the best boyfriend you’ve ever had and there’s no doubt in your mind you’ll spend the rest of your life with him.

One of the things that made it hard to testify was having Yuta watching. His defense attorney didn’t leave the table, which meant as he looked to him to answer his questions, he could see Yuta, sitting calmly, listening.

“Mr. Shiryo, can you tell us why you were on pain medications to begin with?”

Hibiki swallows. Stop looking at me. Stop. “I-- yes, I was in a car accident with my parents when I was eleven. A drunk driver killed them both, and I was put in a coma. I was on pain medications because it gave me a lot of phantom pains, and physical rehab was a long and painful process. They were prescribed by my doctor.”

“Was the chronic pain the only long term result of your car accident?”

You... you little-- “No. It wasn’t.”

A pause. “Well, what were the other results?”

“I... I suffered head trauma. Damage to my frontal and occipital lobes.”

“And what diagnoses did the physicians give you?”

He huffs rolling his eyes. “It...” How can this be relevant? How is any of this relevant? “Am I really required to tell the court my personal medical history?”

“Answer the question, Mr. Shiryo--”

“Objection, relevance.” Finally.

“It’s relevant for understanding Mr. Shiryo’s behavior.”

“There’s no evidence that any sort of traumatic brain injury would have affected his behavior in this particular situation--”

“You would see that it does if you gave him a chance to answer the question.”

The judge sighs. “Overruled. Mr. Shiryo, answer the question.”

Hibiki’s gaze drops, breathing becoming deliberate and slow. If he doesn’t stay calm he’ll scream. He wants nothing more than to scream. “I was diagnosed with an impulse control disorder and post traumatic stress disorder.”

“An impulse control disorder? And the doctors put you on highly addictive medications?”

“Objection, leading the witness.”

“Sustained.”

“I’ll rephrase. What explanation did the doctors give you for putting you on medications that have a high risk for addiction?”

“I was administered my medication by a nurse for a few months after I left the hospital, then my foster parents managed it until I went to school on my own. They said that I was at a much lower risk with someone else giving me the medication than I would be taking it on my own.”

“But you took it on your own at school, correct?”

“Objection, leading the witness.”

“Sustained.”

“I’ll rephrase. Did you have someone to administer your medication while you were at school?”

Hibiki hesitates. “No. I didn’t.”

Without any follow up, the defense attorney turns his paper over and smiles, quickly flitting to the next question. “Were you abusing drugs at the time you were dating the defendant?”

His eyes widen, throat tightening. Of course. Of fucking course. They were going to blame the breakup on him, say that he was delusional and obsessed, say that he spent years plotting revenge instead of being a popsicle because of him-- “Not initially.” He snaps defensively. “It started about a month and a half into us dating each other. Agawa was especially rough during sex, which made my pain worse, and my anxiety around the sex he demanded worse, so I started taking more medication.”

The defense attorney’s face goes stern, and Yuta, for once, shows a flash of anger. That wasn’t the version of the story Hibiki was allowed to tell. It wasn’t the version he’d told a million times before. Because Yuta always said it was the stress of school, it was his own inability to cope, it was him him him. “You don’t think that having no one to monitor your medication intake was a factor?”

“I know it was a factor,” he says flatly. “I also know it wasn’t the reason. I had no one looking after me at school, so no one asked about the bruises or bleeding, or why I was so out of it. But it wasn’t the reason I started ‘abusing’ drugs. Funny word choice, actually,” he mutters.

The defense attorney swallows, turning over his paper again. “Mr. Shiryo, can you tell the court what the primary side effects of opiod pain killer and benzodiazapine overdose are?”

Hibiki sighs. “I’m not an expert witness. I can’t, no.”

“Fine, I’ll rephrase. Can you tell us what the primary symptoms you experienced were?”

Pause. “Yes. Nausea, insomnia, vomiting, anxiety, shakes, memory loss... uh, fatigue, concentration issues... think that’s about it.”

“Memory loss?”

“Yes.”

He seems to calm slightly, sternness melting away into his usual professional, unruffled demeanor. That’s what he reminded Hibiki of-- it clicked, just now. A crow. Even his voice sounded almost like a caw. “How certain are you of your testimony of the events of the night of your breakup with my client?”

Of course. “Completely certain.”

“Really? A tox panel from the night you were admitted to the hospital for your broken arm says that you had extremely high levels of both opiods and benzodiazapines in your system, which you’ve just admitted caused memory loss.”

“I am completely certain.” Hibiki’s voice carries a sharp, irritated edge.

“The description of the events that you gave to the ER doctor that night said, and I quote, ‘I fell during an argument with my boyfriend and broke my arm over the back of a chair.’ You yourself said you fell, in an account given hours after the events. Is it possible you are recalling it wrong now, after more than a decade?”

“No.”

“Then why are the stories different?”

“Because--” Hibiki snaps, pausing for a second to take a deep breath before continuing. “Because I was lying that night. I didn’t want him to get in trouble because I thought he might do something to me.”

“You lied?”

“...Yes.”

“How can we be certain which of your so-called ‘official’ accounts is a lie?”

“Because it took me years to recognize how abusive Yuta was to me, and that night, after it all happened, I was scared.”

“That’s very touching, see, but not very convincing. Because maybe what changed in that decade wasn’t that you ‘came to your senses’ and had any sort of realization, but rather that you grew bitter over his successes and your continued failures, and you wanted to craft a story to bring him down--”

“Objection, speculation!”

“Sustained. Be warned, councilman.”

“What is your profession, Mr. Shiryo?”

He feels a stab in the gut. “I’m... I’m an adult dancer.”

“An adult dancer.” He smiles as he says it.

“Is that a question?” Hibiki sneers.

“No, no,” he says lightly, feigning innocence. “Is it difficult work? Somewhat demeaning at times?”

Hibiki glances at the prosecutor, who nods at him, then to the judge, who gives him a curious look. His eyes scan the crowd for any hint of a reaction, finding nothing reassuring. “Yes. It’s physically taxing, and there are clients who don’t follow the rules. They touch us. But they get kicked out, so it’s-- it’s... a job.”

“You were accepted to Hope’s Peak, were you not? For ikebana?”

He swallows. “Yes, I was.”

“And you worked in a flower shop in high school?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Do you like your job?”

“It’s-- not all the time, no. I don’t think anyone does. But I do it for the money and I’m good at it, so I guess in that way it’s fine.”

“Do you regret not pursuing a job in your field?”

“I... didn’t have much of a chance to. I spent ten years in captivity. Not even allegedly, the... the person who did it, she...” He sighs. This is Yuta’s crime, but... he can’t accuse him of this. He can’t, or he’ll look like an insane, jealous liar. “She was convicted a few weeks ago, actually. So yes, I wish I’d been able to get a job that I enjoyed, but I’m getting by.”

“Does it make you jealous to see someone who you claim did horrible things to you during your relationship with him go on to live his dreams and become a respected and revered pillar of his community?”

Hibiki bites his lip, staring down at his lap. The answer was yes, but... if he said that... Yet if he lied, everyone would see right through it. There’s no way he didn’t care. “Yes. I worked hard and was punished for no reason. It bothers me that almost everyone I knew got to live their dreams except for me.” Tears well up in his eyes. Why did saying that hurt so much? He knew Yuta took a lot from him, but... maybe to realize how far he’d really fallen...

“Nothing further, your honor.”

A/N: I’m in love with doctor Dean now. Quote for this one was, “As long as I’m around, nothing bad is going to happen to you.”…

You could feel the pain before you opened your eyes. It just hurt absolutely everywhere, like every bruise, cut and scrape you’d endured through life had come together at once and multiplied by a thousand. Opening your eyes you were blinded by bright light, trying to blink it away. You went to move your hand to rub your eye but found you couldn’t, strapped down to something.

“Woah, calm down sweetheart,” said a deep voice as you struggled and made jolts of anguish shoot through nerves you didn’t even know you had. “Relax, we’re going to take care of you. Now can you tell me your name?”

You blinked a few more times and scrunched up your face, still trying to get your bearings.

“I’m Dr. Dean Winchester,” he said, taking a second to stop whatever it was he was doing and look down at you, a pair of green eyes meeting yours. “Can you tell me your name sweetheart?”

“Y-Y/N,” you said weakly, the one word alone sapping all of your energy from you. He smiled and said something to someone else, your straps undone as they moved you from one table to another, pulling a groan out of you. Your little car never stood a chance against that tractor trailer that decided to cross four lanes of highway and come at you head on. “Other drive...”

“Bumps and bruises. Let’s focus on you, Y/N,” said the doctor. Your head got dizzy and some alarm started going off. Shit, that didn’t feel right.

“Dying?” you asked, barely catching his coat sleeve. He gave you a gentle smile.

“As long as I’m around, nothing bad is going to happen to you, promise,” he said. “Let’s get her into OR 7 and prepped to go people.”

You still felt like you were dying but at least you didn’t feel covered in sticky blood anymore. You flashed open your eyes to find yourself in a dimly lit room, the sun trying to peak in through the blinds. It only took you about two seconds to realize you were in intensive care, the big room to yourself and the thousand machines strapped to you more than giving it away.

“Hey, you woke up sooner than I expected,” said the man you just noticed at the end of your bed. He looked tired in his blue scrubs as he jotted something down on a chart. 

“De...” you said before your throat felt drier than the desert. 

“Here you go,” he said, grabbing the pitcher of water from the other side of the room and pouring it in your cup, picking up one of the straws and sticking it in. “Slow sips.”

You took a few at first, eventually getting larger ones until that small act exhausted you. 

“Dean,” you said, finishing your statement from before. He smiled.

“I’m surprised you remember that,” he said with a chuckle. “How you feeling?” he asked, putting two fingers on your wrist and looking at his watch for a moment before looking at the monitors.

“Crappy,” you croaked out.

“Well that’s not good. It’s my job to get you not crappy,” said Dean with a smile.

“Cute,” you said, shivering as you noticed the chill in the room. “Can I have a blanket?”

“I’m sorry Y/N. We have to get your fever down first. Hopefully end of today it’ll be low grade and we can get you feeling warmer again,” he said. You shivered again and he looked heartbroken.

“Don’t look at me like that,” you said. “I’m not some broken thing.”

“I know. That attitude is good too for PT,” he said, putting your chart back down.

“What’s wrong with me?” you asked.

“You really should get some rest Y/N. We can talk about it later if you’d like,” said Dean. You scowled and he sighed. “Broken ribs, large lacerations to the arms and chest with deep penetrating ones near your heart, nearly punctured lung, partially severed veins in your lower limbs, a concussion, various scrapes and bruises...your toes are probably the only thing that don’t hurt right now,” he joked.

“Thank you,” you said, Dean pouring you another glass of water and moving it over to where you could get it on your own.

“I’ll have a nurse come in soon. Get some sleep and I’ll be back later today.”

You were ready to kill someone with the agony you were in. Where the fuck was your pain killers? Nearly all day when you weren’t sleeping you were mashing the nurse button but the doctor hadn’t prescribed you any. 

“Hello Y/N, how are-”

“Prescription, write it now, please,” you said, seeing his eyes go wide. 

“Oh fuck,” he said, scrambling from the room. Two minutes later he was back with a morphine bag. “Shit, I’m so sorry. I was writing one this morning and...shit I left it in your chart.”

“Just hurry up,” you whined, your hands hurting from clawing into the sheets all day. It took a moment but soon you felt a small wave of relief hit you. “Oh that’s so much better.”

“I’m sorry. I really am. I went home to bed and came back without looking at my phone and...shit they’re supposed to get someone else if I’m not here to do it,” he said, pissed at himself and the whole damn hospital now.

“On the bright side, I feel fucking amazing now,” you said. “You should try this stuff.”

“I apologize Y/N. It won’t happen again.”

Dr. Winchester was very attentive of you after that incident, checking on you often throughout the days, saying hi when you were walking in the halls to get your strength back, occasionally eating his lunch with you. Thankfully your legs weren’t as bad as they feared and you were told you could be running a marathon soon. Not like you would have done that anyways.

“How’s my favorite patient doing today?” asked Dean, stopping in your room and grabbing your chart.

“I’m moving from ICU this afternoon. I’m bustin’ out of this joint soon Dean,” you said. 

“Good. I love seeing you everyday but I would prefer it not be with you in a hospital bed,” said Dean. You tilted your head, wondering if he meant it to come out that way. Dean had grown more flirty with you lately but you’d always thought that was his natural personality coming through.

“So I can go home soon?” you asked, so used to Dean picking up your arms and bending them this way and that you just talked when he started doing his thing.

“We’ll pop you to a normal room for three days or so and then you can head home as long as you have someone there. Otherwise we’ll probably keep you four or five,” said Dean. You groaned and he chuckled, sitting down on your bed. “What, you don’t want to go home?”

“If you hadn’t noticed Dean no one came to visit me. That means two more days of staring at these pale blue walls,” you said. Dean sighed, opening his mouth but closing it. You knew what he wanted to say but that wasn’t his place.

“A few more days sweetheart and you’ll be able to take care of yourself.”

You were lying on your couch in your dusty apartment. It hadn’t been cleaned in who knew how fucking long. You glanced over to your kitchen, the to-do list stuck on your fridge of chores you were supposed to do that day you got in your accident long and probably never getting done.

“Clean up apartment, yeah that ain’t happening,” you said, forcing yourself to sit up. It’d been easier when someone was helping. You weren’t afraid to struggle some but your house was a freaking mine field compared to the nice clean hospital. Your phone rang and you growled at yourself for leaving it on the kitchen counter. 

Carefully you slid over to the end of the couch, pushing off the arm rest and standing. You managed to grab the phone on the last ring.

“Hello?” you asked, taking a step straight into an empty box and falling face first onto your tile floor. “Ow.”

“Y/N? This is Dr. Winchester. Are you alright?” he asked. 

“I fell,” you said, breathing hard. “I’m fine. Just sore.”

“Do you want me to call an ambulance?” he asked and you laughed.

“No Dean. I’m okay. I banged my knee mostly,” you said, sitting up against your cabinets, inspecting your throbbing leg. “What’s up?”

“I was just checking in after you checked out this morning. Besides the fall how is everything going?” he asked.

“I’m okay,” you said. “Not looking forward to going back to work.”

“You aren’t cleared to return to work Y/N,” said Dean. Shit, he wasn’t supposed to know about that. “You know that.”

“Yeah, I know I’m just saying in the long term ya know?” you said. He was silent on the other end.

“Don’t go to work tomorrow,” he said. You rolled your eyes. How could he possibly understand? He made good money and had good insurance. You were lucky you were covered for what had happened but if you didn’t get back to work soon...”Doctor’s orders.”

“I won’t go to work tomorrow, Dean.”

“Y/N, how not lovely to see you again,” said Dean, walking into your hospital room. “I distinctly remember you saying yesterday that you wouldn’t be going to work.”

“I had to. I need the money and my insurance...my boss said I had to get back,” you said.

“Yeah well whoever your boss is deserves an ass kicking,” said Dean, looking over your chart. “Exhaustion and you hit your head again. Y/N I wanted to see you again but not like this.”

“It doesn’t matter, I got fired anyways,” you said. “I’ll be in medical debt forever if you don’t discharge me today.”

“Not happening,” said Dean, pulling out his flashlight and holding up his finger. You knew the routine by now and he had a scowl when he finished. “You have some puffiness around your eyes. We should have another scan to make sure-”

“I’ve been crying okay? Please just leave me alone Dean,” you said, turning on your side away from him. 

“Get some rest. I’ll check back later,” he said, pulling up your blanket and turning off the light as he left.

You were home again, back on the couch, only now you were trying to figure out what the hell you were supposed to do. You could look for a job but Dean or your other doctor weren’t clearing you for weeks that was for sure. You could only thank your other doctor that he let you go home a few hours ago so you wouldn’t have to deal with any medical bills. 

A knock came at your door and you frowned. You waited and hoped they would go away. They knocked again and you huffed, standing up too fast but not caring as you flung your door open.

“What!” you said, staring at a pair of blue scrubs.

“Bad day?” asked Dean, taking a step back. You breathed hard for a moment, Dean’s hand raising up to hand you a bag. “You didn’t go to the pharmacy.”

“I can’t afford it,” you said. “I’ll take feeling like crap for a while over the debt.”

“Just take the medicine, Y/N. It’s covered,” said Dean, thrusting the bag forward.

“You did not pay for this,” you said, crossing your arms, refusing to accept it.

“Fine I didn’t pay for it. Shit you can be as stubborn as hell, can’t you? You’ve had a really rough go of it these past few months. I’m just trying to help you not have some more,” said Dean.

“I don’t think it’s very professional of you to do something like this,” you said, un-fisting one of your hands, feeling the bag be shoved under it.

“I like you, sue me,” he said. “Is that your apartment? It’s a mess.”

“Sorry, spring cleaning wasn’t on the top of my list of crap to deal with today,” you said, walking away.

“Have you eaten yet?” he asked. You shrugged. “You have no food?”

“Everything is expired. The grocery store is closed. I’ll go tomorrow,” you said. Dean was shaking his head in your doorway.

“I’ll be back in an hour,” he said, pulling your front door shut.

“Yeah right.”

“I know you’re in there,” said Dean an hour later, after you’d ignored his knocking for a few minutes. Reluctantly you got up and answered. Dean was in jeans and a flannel, carrying a big bag full of tupperware containers.

“What is-”

“Food for the next few days. Just pop them in the oven or microwave. There’s a note with how long to cook them each,” said Dean. “Get your strength back. Now can I come in please?”

“Not like you’d take no for an answer,” you said, waving him in after you.

“What would you like? I made some comfort food, mashed potatoes and mac n’ cheese if you want,” he said, pulling out the top container from the bag.

“Go for it,” you said, pointing over to your kitchen before sitting down on your couch. You shut your eyes as you listened to him move about. But he kept moving and kept moving to the point where you were getting annoyed at the noise. “What-”

He was fucking cleaning your apartment for you. 

“There are in home nurses that would normally help with this but I’m already here,” said Dean when he caught your stare.

“Remember that unprofessional thing?” you said, Dean smiling to himself.

“You want me gone just say the words and I’ll leave you be,” said Dean, picking up some boxes and putting them in a pile near your door to go out. You sighed and he laughed. “That’s what I thought.”

“Why are you even helping me?” you asked. 

“Maybe cause I like you?” said Dean with a smile. You nestled into your couch as he worked away, cleaning up the dust and sweeping up the floor, tossing the old food in the trash and bundling it up to go out as well. 

“You do this for all your patients?” you asked, sniffing the air as the thought of hot food made you smile.

“Nope. Just you,” he said. He made his way back into the kitchen, taking out the food as the timer went off. Before you knew it, you had a plate on your kitchen table and you were hopping up for a bite. “Slower next time.”

“You got it doc,” you said, sitting down and diving in, only feeling a little strange at being the only one eating. It’d been a lifetime since you had an actual home cooked meal. You glanced around your apartment and found it now free of any obstacles to trip on, no longer musty smelling in there either.

“You need anything else tonight?” he asked. You shook your head between bites. Dean stood, grabbed a notepad and started jotting down a few things. “I got to run to the grocery store in the morning. I can pick up what you want around here in case you get sick of my cooking.”

“This is fucking phenomenal,” you said, scarfing down the last of your food. “I can make it on my own.”

“Deal.”

“Eh, what’s up doc?” you said a few weeks later, Dean laughing the way he always did when you answered his calls.

“Do you want to have dinner at my place tonight? We always eat over at yours. I figured maybe you wanted to-”

“Sure. I’d love to see you work in a kitchen that’s not the size of a closet,” you said.

“Swing by in about thirty,” he said. He was there in twenty five, still in scrubs and a little sweaty from his long shift.

“Surgery today?” you asked, walking down the stairs outside without his help but his hand there to catch you in case.

“Yeah, car accident. Got hit head on. Her car took the brunt of it. It wasn’t life threatening like you,” he said. 

“Wait, life...you never told me that,” you said, pausing at his car. He walked around the other side of the Impala and slid in. You followed suit and repeated your statement.

“You don’t tell people when they come in on death’s door that they’re probably not going to make it. You just say you’ll try your best,” said Dean, pulling out of your small lot and onto the road.

“That’s not what you told me,” you said. 

“I know,” said Dean.

“Then why’d you say it?” you asked.

“I don’t know, I just did,” he said. “What’s the big deal?” 

“You shouldn’t promise people in my situation that you’re going to save them,” you said.

“I don’t. I just did it the once with you,” he said, resting his head on his propped up elbow.

“Why?” you asked softly. Dean sighed and put both hands back on the wheel.

“I don’t know Y/N. I just did it,” he said. “How’d PT go today?” he asked, getting off the topic. 

You told him how you were doing better, thanks to him pulling some strings and getting you in at no cost. He was happy to hear how you found a work from home job that was flexible with your hours, had good benefits and paid decent enough that you’d start at next week. By the time you’d got done talking you were pulling into his parking lot.

He led you over to the door and inside, pointing out the stairs or elevator. He was on the third floor but you knew you could handle it. He was smiling when you turned around at the top. 

“Three months ago you couldn’t take a step without some help,” he said. “Told you you’d get there.”

“I have a very attentive doctor,” you teased, following him down the hall and into a nice apartment. It was bigger and nicer than yours but it wasn’t fancy, not that you’d expect that from the guy that showed up in plaid everyday.

“I’m going to pop dinner in the oven and take a fast shower if you don’t mind,” he said. “You can watch TV or whatever,” he said, waving you over to the couch. “There’s a half bath over there,” he said, pointing at an open door as he messed about in the kitchen.

“Gotcha,” you said, taking a seat on his couch and practically moaning. Shit you should have been a doctor for a couch like that.

“Y/N? Want some food sleepy head?” he teased as he shook you awake. 

“Sorry,” you said sitting up from where you’d fallen asleep while dinner cooked.

“S’kay. I figured the extra stairs might take it out of you,” he said. He was in a pair of sweats and a black tee, helping you up and over to his kitchen table.

“Oh I love your mashed potatoes,” you said, smiling when you took a seat.

“Y/N, we...I’m your friend right? I’m not just your overly concerned doctor to you?” he asked, sitting across from you.

“Yeah Dean, you’re my friend. What’s going on?” you asked. He shifted in his seat and shrugged.

“Just checking,” he said. “I know you’re pretty independent now. You don’t need me to help. I just don’t want to stop hanging out is all.”

“That depends,” you said, hoping you weren’t going too far. “Are you finally going to ask me out?”

“I wanted us to to be friends first,” said Dean. You smiled and he returned it. “Would you like to go on a date with me Y/N?”

“Yes, I would like that very much,” you said.

“Can this be our first date?” he asked, smirking with big bright eyes.

“Yes. You had this planned all along didn’t you,” you said. “That’s why we had dinner here.”

“Hard to plan a surprise first date in someone else’s apartment ya know,” he joked. “I like you Y/N. A lot.”

“I like you too Dean. You’ve helped in more ways than you’ll ever know,” you said.

“I told you once before, as long as I’m around, nothing bad is going to happen to you. I intend on keeping that promise,” said Dean. He smiled when you tilted your head at him. “What?”

“Do you want to hang out tomorrow? Go to the park maybe,” you asked.

“Yeah, I’d like that. We can have a picnic if you want,” he said, the hope in his eyes that you were talking about another date.

My wife and I are in our 40's and 50's. We have created A/B trusts and transferred our assets to them, and expect to have estates that will benefit from the estate tax saving these trusts afford. We recently both purchased $1M 10-year renewable term life insurance policies that we expect to keep for 10 years. We chose not to use life insurance trusts because the purpose of the policies is to replace the lost income of the deceased spouse if one of us dies relatively soon, not to increase our final estate, and the trusts are somewhat costly. We each specified our own trusts as the beneficiaries, because we want the disposition of assets specified there to be used for this money. The trusts provide for the income, and principle if needed, to be paid to the spouse, and for the remainder to be paid to our child at the remaining spouses death. The question of ownership of the policies is less clear. My lawyer says that it doesn't make much difference who owns them, because the value (estate) taxed is only one year's premium, not the $1M. My accountant says that the $1M is taxed, and that each policy should be owned by the other spouse to avoid tax on that amount. A friend said that there's no way to avoid or significantly decrease the tax, so just leave the ownership as is (each spouse owns their own policy). A further fly in the ointment is that the insurance company (Massachusetts SBLI) makes some forms of trust ownership more difficult and costly. I'm confused. What ownership is the best? At fault driver's car insurance won't pay for my damages!?

Hey guys and gals, My wife was in a car accident on 10/8 driving our truck with liability only insurance (IE: not full coverage because the truck is only worth ~$3000 and it's paid for). She was turning right and had slowed down to turn (with her turn signal on) when a speeding truck slammed into the van behind her, ramming the van in to our truck. The police filed a report, in which the driver of the speeding truck (an 18 year old kid, that had just left his house less than 1/4 mile away) was determined to be at fault. It is worth note that this happened in front of two different auto body shops, and within sight of the house the at fault driver had just left. Their insurance company, state farm, finally contacted us on 11/8 after not returning our phone calls for nearly two weeks saying they had determined he was in fact at fault and would send an adjuster the following Monday. He came, inspected the truck, determined it was repairable, then said we would hear from their office later that day. When they called they told us the damage was more than 75% of the vehicles worth so it was considered total and they would send the required paperwork to my email address to begin payment. Within 3 hours, the claim agent we had talked to the previous Friday said an owner of one of the auto shops had came forward (all of a sudden, no mention of a witness before) and that he had a notarized statement saying the van struck our vehicle before the truck struck the van. The insurance company now will not pay us for the damages. We tried to call the witness and get a copy of his report because State Farm would not give us the copy. Then we called the other auto body shop and both the owner and one of his employees both seen the accident and say that the truck was at fault, and the owner overheard the driver say specifically that it was his fault. When we bring this to the agents attention, she claims this is not evidence because they know the at fault driver. We found out that the first witness also knows the driver, but can't prove it. Ours is a small town, you don't have neighbors that you don't know or speak to. It seems we are at an impasse, and I have been without a truck for nearly 6 weeks. What should I do in this instance? Get an attorney? Our insurance agency is adamant about not intervening since we did not have full coverage insurance. It may be worth noting that my wife has had back and neck pain since the accident and went to the hospital the day of the accident, the family doctor twice since, and has an appointment with a chiropractor next week (all of which our insurance has paid for.)""

I wish I was better. I have so much I want to do. I miss my career as a Funeral Director. I loved helping families, and really had a calling for that line of work. I was very passionate about it and put 110% into my job. I can’t wait to travel and go back to Ireland and see cousins. I long to go to Germany and trace my roots.To explore London and some of Europe. I want to explore Australia..the jungle, the Outback, the cities. I want to go on a safari in Africa, to Italy and Greece and see architecture. I would love to get notebooks and just start sketching. To road trip across the United States and stop at obscure places and take pictures and talk to people and hear real story clips over coffee and homemade pie. My autonomic system is misfiring and I am being held hostage by P.O.T.S. I keep passing out or blacking out or coming close to it, or feeling like it. I am so weak I can barely stand. 1. A Mother Finds A Way…

“Had a mother come in and INSIST that her child had Silver-Russell syndrome. You can go read on it. It’s not that easy to fake, as it’s a bunch of metabolic conditions mixed with congenital abnormalities.

The kid was small, but not that small (around 6th percentile). He didn’t weight much (5th percentile). All of this, with a right arm length 2 cm more than the left side, were borderline criteria for Silver-Russell. Did genetic testing, which came back negative, but 30% of cases are negative.

So the deciding factor was one of the ‘soft’ criteria of hypoglycemia. Once she heard about this (she printed out 30-40 articles on the disease), she came back with the kid in a coma. But when the kid was in the hospital, he was never hypoglycemic. He went home, and came back in a coma a few weeks later. Again, as soon as he was eating normally at the hospital, he was never hypoglycemic.

She starved her child into comas repeatedly for the diagnosis of Silver-Russell. She was also a ‘bougon,’ people who live off welfare and make a game out of it. By the way, she was in a wheelchair when at the hospital. Once I had enough of her bullshit and walked into the room after only knocking once. She was walking around normally and jumped into the wheelchair as soon as she saw me.

I believe it was for money since in Canada/Quebec, you get money when your child has a genetic disability… God, if it was legal, I would have slapped some sense into that her.”

At the end of the clinic visit, when I offered a physical therapy referral and stronger NSAIDs (the actual treatment for osteoarthritis), she suddenly sat straight up, looked me in the eye, and said, ‘Doctor, I don’t know how…but I’m totally paralyzed.’

Seriously. She pretended that, all of a sudden, everything other than her mouth was totally paralyzed. She made us send her to the ER (but not before she had my nurse unwrap a peppermint and literally put it on her tongue because ‘her blood sugar felt low’). We had to lift this nutcase into a wheelchair (during which we could all feel her shifting and repositioning…not something a paralyzed person would do) and roll her to the ER to be evaluated for ‘sudden paralysis’.

While in the ER, she suggested to the ER doc that maybe Lortab would fix her paralysis, and when the ER doc rightly refused this treatment, she got out of the stretcher and walked out.”

5.Girl Begins Fake Convulsions Out Of Grief

“Not even a patient but a family member. The family was grieving in the room due to the patient just being made comfort care and not expected to survive the day. A niece of the patient, who was easily in her 30’s, started screaming like she was being murdered and fell to the floor near our nursing pod. She started ‘convulsing’ but her family completely ignored her. Some even side stepped her or literally stepped over her while trying to leave the unit. The niece would randomly convulse while we were loading her onto a stretcher. The charge nurse picked this ladies arm up and let it fall. It some how just softly returned to her side. Finally she was loaded up and we were ready to transport her to the ER. The ladies aunt/mom/sister? looked at the doctor and asked if the hospital was going to pay for her tests. The doctor on the unit said no and ‘miraculously’ the niece shot up and acted like she couldn’t remember what happened. The rest of the family just left her there and told the desk not to let her back in to the unit once she was escorted out.”

8. Good Guy Car Accident Victim Runs A Con

“I was an intern in a busy trauma ED when a guy walks up the ambulance bay and screams he needs to be seen immediately. They take him back and he starts telling everyone he was in a car accident last night going ‘100+ mph’ on the interstate but did not go to the hospital because he was worried about his friend, the driver. But now he’s losing feeling in his legs and has severe back pain and needs to be seen.

So of course the story is super fishy but we put him on a backboard/collar and get some xrays of chest and pelvis (our protocol for any severe trauma). The radiologist who is stationed in the ED flags me and asks when out patient got a CT scan. He showed me his pelvis x ray and his bladder is super bright: it’s filled with the iodine contrast agent they inject in your veins when you get a CT which is then excreted by the kidneys over the next few hours.

So we confront our patient about why he didn’t tell us about being seen at another hospital and getting a CT. He launches into a rambling explanation about concussions and amnesia. He has, of course, also exhibited several other drug seeking behaviors in his short time in the ED. He decides to leave AMA but not before asking the nurse directions to the nearest hospital, presumably to try the same trick.”

9. Home Nurse Gets Robbed

“My wife’s a district nurse, she drives to peoples homes changing dressings, giving medications etc etc. Her job has her dealing with many people such as gang members and people on home detention, but the worst in her opinion, the people you never trust even a little bit are the methadone patients, according to her a lot of them will try anything to get a little bit more.

She had one not long ago that was being extremely talkative, almost like he didn’t want her to leave the house. Then he started showing her every little lump and bump, wanting her to make sure they weren’t infections or anything. Although he wasn’t making her uncomfortable, she did think it was strange for him as he was normally very quiet and wanted the nurses gone asap.

When she got back to her car the back window had been smashed in but all that was missing was her sharps container and the lockbox the drugs were kept in. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what was going on so she walks back to the house, looks in the front window and sees the methadone dude and another guy sitting on the couch trying to open her lockbox and emptying the sharps container on the floor.

She called the police at that point and despite knowing that some of the needles now on the floor were from an HIV+ patient she had earlier in the day she sat in the car until the PD arrived because you never ever get between a junkie and a fix.”

10. Man Fakes Migraine To Get Out Of Paying For His Meal

Gentleman called 911 from a restaurant claiming he had a migraine and was unable to see properly. He was literally 2 blocks from a hospital.

I’ve had migraines, I’m sympathetic. On the way to the call I was planning my treatment plan so he would be more comfortable during the wait in the emerg.

He was waiting outside, in full sunlight, waving at us. Thanked us politely for coming ‘to his rescue’. Sat in the well lit ambulance, chatting up a storm, making inappropriate jokes, and laughing. Stating the whole time he has 10/10 pain from a migraine, and that only Percocet works to reduce the pain. He has them frequently, and wouldn’t you know it, he’s run out of his prescribed medication, and his doctor is on vacation.

The chef from the restaurant he called from came out and asked for his information. Our patient was ‘unable to pay his bill, due to the pain.’ He conveniently had no ID he could leave with the restaurant, and only had his debit card with him. He promised to come back, once he was feeling well enough to tap his PIN into the machine, but right now he couldn’t. The chef knew 100% the guy was full of shit, but couldn’t do anything.

As someone who has had a vomiting, shaking, vision effecting, migraine in the past, he did nothing to convince he was in actual discomfort. I actually would greatly prefer if he had said, ‘I ate a meal I can’t afford, and I’m addicted to pain killers, can you please take me to the ER.’ Honesty would have gotten him better treatment from everyone involved.”

11. Screams For Pain Meds When Not Having A Seizure

“This JUST happened last week, strangely enough. I’ve been a nurse for 4 years now, and this is probably the worst I’ve seen it.

Young adult comes in with seizure-like activity. We’re a neuroscience floor, so we get these a lot. Complains of severe abdominal pain related to her seizures, apparently. They run multiple CTs and MRIs that come back clean. We put her on a 24 hour VEEG machine (video EEG for those who don’t know). She reportedly has 100s of seizures throughout the night, with full body convulsions, drooling, upper extremity contractions, and will not respond to verbal stimuli. Post ictal, she’s not lethargic, just confused. Doesn’t know her own name, the place that she’s in, or what time it is, but the rest of her neuro assessment is benign. No bladder incontinence during, had perfect control of all limbs.

She screams for pain meds when she’s not having seizures, but is for some reason refusing everything they offer her. Tylenol – nope. Percocet – makes her feel weird. Lidoderm patch for her abdomen – it gives her sores in her mouth. I guarantee if a doctor offered Opiates, she would have been all over that.

After 24 hours of being her, $1000s worth of tests being run all coming up negative, the doctors had no choice but to send her home. She become agitated and seizing again, while the doctor is basically explaining that she’s faking it. He says, ‘I’ll wait.’ She immediately stops.

Security had to escort he out, with me in tow, because I was too paranoid that she would throw herself on the floor before leaving and demand to be readmitted. They recommended an outpatient psych consult for her, which made her even angrier. Lord knows, maybe the seizures felt real to her, but she didn’t need a special kind of help.”

12. A Colossal Waste Of Everyone’s Time

“EMT here. The one that sticks out is the most textbook example of drug seeking behavior.

Get called out to a residence at 2 am (because of course, it’s always 2 am). Guy says he’s having 10/10 finger pain and gingerly holding his hand in the air. Says there was no trauma, just started suddenly and it’s unbearable.

So we load him up, take him the 25 minutes the the hospital. Entire time he’s holding his hand in the air. But we had a full conversation, talked about Football, never once did he complain about pain.

We wheel him into the ER and literally the second we walk through the door, this guy starts in pain. Says he can’t sit still the pain is unbearable, he has to stand up, screaming at the nurse to help. Then he turned to the nurse and said:

‘I had this same issue at a different hospital 2 weeks ago. They couldn’t tell what was wrong. They gave me morphine but that didn’t work so then they gave me dilaudid. That worked. So maybe you should just start with dilaudid tonight.’ And then he went back to moaning in pain.

Nurse and I just looked at each other, we put him in a bed and I drove the 35 minutes back to station. Highly doubt he was given any pain less that night, was just a colossal waste of everyone’s time.”

13. People Really Act Out

“I am an X-ray tech. All the time in the ED you will have patients that come in seeking things. These patients will have a bunch of X-rays ordered. So when you first start the exams they will be in all sorts of pain. They cannot position any body part. Fighting and begging you to not do it. Then after about 15 minutes, when they notice you’re going to do your job. They stop the charade and get through the stack of images ordered on them. It’s quite incredible really.

The other thing that blows my mind is when people want the worst possible outcome of their disease. Like you can feel the craving for sympathy emanating from them. With phrases ‘Ohhh that’s really bad isn’t it’ or ‘Oh man is that the worse you’ve seen?’ Not said with dread, but barely hidden excitement.”

14. Some Of The Most Obvious Fakes

“I have so many of these!!

–Male patient, 18 years old, rolled in unconscious. Mom says he’s been like that for the past four hours. Go to check his lungs when I hear something interesting. I place the stethoscope near his mouth and hear him breathe in normally, but then breathe out by saying ‘breath’. No joke.

–Male patient, 21 years old, admitted with inability to speak for last two hours and respiratory distress. Lungs clear, but we hook him up to oxygen for a few minutes. After he’s taken off, his father comes running and drags me over, saying his sons tongue refuses to go back in after receiving the oxygen. I look at the kid and he’s seriously just lying there with his tongue poking out like a child. I tell them to push it back in. A few hours later the dad tells me the boy is convulsing. I go to see without making my presence known and he’s lying there just fine. The moment I ask the mom how he’s doing, he starts ‘convulsing’. Think of an odd version of the worm, but on his back.

–Female patient, 16 years old, admitted with complaints of recurrent seizures and frothing from the mouth. I look at her and she is literally blowing spit bubbles. I check her reflexes, everything is intact. The moment I turn away to check on another patient, she suddenly becomes ‘rigid’ and the spitting intensifies.

–Male patient, 30 years old, unconscious and completely unresponsive for six hours. This guy was totally dedicated to his act. I initially approached it as a stroke, but when the blood pressure, ECG, reflexes, pupils, etc all are normal….I start checking pain sensation. He slowly began to open his eyes and groan as I asked him to tell me his name, but the moment his Achilles’ tendon was pressed, he suddenly sat up, stated his name, and declared himself cured.

–Female patient, 17 years old, complained of respiratory distress and convulsions. Everything’s normal on admission, and she’s conscious but refuses to eat. Parents are worried out of their minds, and every few minutes she has a ‘fit’ where she would just basically shake from side to side. She let slip to a nurse that she didn’t want to go to school that week, so she was faking an illness. Since she was refusing to eat, the attending wrote up an order for a nasogastric tube (which was inserted and then removed by her in a matter of minutes), and we prescribed her sugar pills because her parents wouldn’t let us transfer her to psychiatry or discharge her. She finally left after four days.”

15. Three Hilarious Paramedic Faker Stories

“Paramedic here – I have three stories that come to mind.

Story #1 – We get called to a local Waffle House for a seizure. We walk in to find a man lying on the floor, not moving, but breathing. We start talking to the waitress, asking what had happened. While talking to her, we occasionally look down at the patient, and find him with one eye barely cracked open, watching us; when he sees us looking at him, he closes his eye. This happens a few times. Then the cops show up and find out what’s going on. One of the officers asks the waitress, ‘Did he (patient) eat here?’

‘Yes, he did.’

‘How much is his bill?’

‘Fourteen dollars.’

At this point, the officers roll the patient over and find his wallet; the guy has a $20 bill in it. One of the officers takes out the $20, gives it to the waitress, and tells her, ‘keep the change.’ You could see the anger in the patient’s face when he realizes he’s not getting out of paying his bill. He ended up faking a seizure on the way to the hospital (I’m not about to explain how I know it was fake, because I’m not going to give anyone ANY info on how to fake a seizure).

Story #2 – We get called to a fall in the women’s bathroom at Wal-Mart. We walk in, and the manager is FREAKING OUT. We go into the bathroom to find a white female face up on the floor – I’m guessing she weighs at least 350 lbs; there were two friends of hers standing in there with her. I ask her what happened; she says she slipped on a puddle and fell, hurting her back. I look all over the bathroom floor; there’s NO water on the floor. I ask the manager AND the patient’s friends – ‘Do you see water on the floor?’ They all said, ‘No.’ I then tell the patient, ‘There’s no water on the floor, ma’am.’ She says, ‘I’m lying on top of it.’ We’re going to have to roll her to her side in order to get a backboard under her and pick her up; I explain that to her. As we roll her to her side, I check her back for any obvious injuries; I then check her clothing AND the floor she was lying on – nothing was wet. I have the manager (who was grinning from ear to ear at this point) and the patient’s friends look – ‘Do you see water on the floor? Are her clothes wet?’ They all said, ‘No.’ We then roll the patient onto the board, pick her up, and place her on a stretcher.

At this point, I tell the patient, ‘I’m going to be writing up paperwork for this call and your treatment. Part of what is going to be written up is the fact that you said you slipped on a wet floor, and that no water was found either on the floor or soaked into your clothing. This is standard; I have to write up what I’m told in addition to what I see. What you need to understand is this – if you happen to decide to take Wal-Mart to court, they can request a copy of my run report, and it’s going to show what you said and what I found. They can also summon me to testify, and if they do, I’m going to tell them what you told me and what I saw, the manager saw, and what your friends saw. That being said, do you want to keep dragging this out and go to the hospital, or do you want to just get up from my stretcher and be done with it?’

She chose to get up and leave.

Story #3 – We get called to a 13 year old having a first-time seizure. We get on scene, and the entire family is freaking out, except for the father. I walk into the room where the kid was – OBVIOUS FAKER. I turn to dad and have him go outside into the hallway, I tell him the boy is faking, and I ask if anything unusual happened today. The father tells me he found marijuana in the kid’s room, and he was getting on to him about it when the kid started ‘seizing.’ I reassured the father that his son was NOT seizing, and he asked if we could take him to the hospital ‘just to be safe.’ I said no problem. We pick the kid up and put him on the stretcher, and as we head outside to the ambulance, he exhibits more behavior that shows he’s faking.

Inside the ambulance, I tell the kid that I know he’s faking and ask him to stop, but he keeps on. The hospital we take him to doesn’t have board-certified Emergency Department physicians; they use General Practice and Internal Medicine physicians (a LOT of smaller hospitals do this). I bring the kid in and give a patient report to the internal medicine doc and the RN, and I say the kid is ‘faking his seizure activity.’ The doctor had a problem with that – ‘You can’t possibly tell that he’s faking.’ I assure him that, yes, the kid is faking. I explain the situation that led up to him faking, and that I could prove it. The doctor says, ‘I’d like to see that.’

The RN knows EXACTLY what’s going on and what I wanted to do; he’s all for it! So I say to the kid, ‘Bob (I don’t remember his name), we need a urine sample from you, and we need you to wake up to do it. If you don’t wake up, we’re going to shove a tube into your penis, run it all the way into your bladder, and take a urine sample from you. Please, just wake up and give us a sample.’

Nothing from the kid.

‘Okay, Bob, if you don’t wake up in 10 seconds, we’re going to start prepping you to get the tube shoved into your penis. Ten, nine, eight, FIVEFOURTHREETWOONE!’

His eyes opened wide as saucers before he realized we caught him. He then closed his eyes, started blinking, looked around the room, and said, ‘What happened?’ The RN was laughing, and the doc was a little pissed.”

16. School Nurse Doesn’t Stand For Nonsense

“My mother was the school nurse when I was in high school, but she’s been a nurse my whole life. She’s told me a few good stories (obviously without names). But I was lucky enough to overhear one of the students trying to fake an illness to get out of class. The kid, we’ll call him Derrick, was a skud. White trash, moody, and destructive. Not my favorite classmate. But I was laying there when I heard him come in and start his routine of attention seeking. (mom used to let me skip seminary and nap on the empty beds).So my mom runs through all the basics, temp, blood pressure, etc. Well Derrick finally just cuts to the chase, obviously frustrated with the procedure, ‘Look Mrs. S, something is seriously wrong here and I’m not faking it this time!’ He screeched, defenses already 10 feet high.

‘OK Derrick, what’s the problem this time?’ She asked.

‘Well, earlier this morning, I started feeling sick, so I went to the bathroom to throw up. After I was done I looked at the toilet…(dramatic pause) and there where over a dozen whole baby carrots…(another pause, this one I think was for any gasps that might be coming) AND I DON’T EVEN EAT CARROTS!’ He nearly shouted.

Well, after about a 10 second pause and what I’m guessing was the hardest straight face my mother ever had to keep. She said, still fighting back laughter, ‘Well, Derrick your body is producing carrots at an alarming rate. Weird that it only seems to happen during gym, though. Here is a Gatorade and a hall pass to get back to class, see you tomorrow, Derrick.’

He left, stunned to be written off so easily and we had a good ol’ laugh.

‘And I don’t even eat carrots!’ has become a family favorite catchphrase.”

17. Limps On The Wrong Leg

“Student nurse, but this happened when I was at the gym.

Guy next to me fell off the elliptical, somehow got his foot trapped between the foot pedals and went sideways. The surprisingly inept PTs (Personal trainers are usually well trained in first aid) were freaking out and this guy is really hamming it up. Talks of calling an ambulance are thrown about. I offer to step in.

‘AHHHHHH MY ANKLE’ He’s on the floor grabbing his leg. I kneel next to him.

‘Hey bro,’ I greet him. He’s so surprised that I’m there (came up from behind) that he forgets to groan. ‘How much does it hurt on a scale of 1-10?’

‘Erm… 8,’ he says. I look at his ankle. There’s a scratch on it the size of a penny and superficial, hardly any blood. Little red around the scratch, ankle not swollen. I ask him if he can point and flex his foot and rotate his ankle, which he can do with zero difficulty, not even a grimace. I figure he’s probably hamming it up cuz it’s embarrassing falling off a machine in front of everyone, so I get him an ice pack (mostly for show tbh), tell him he’ll be fine, and tell the PTs not to call an ambulance. His sister comes to pick him up in her car and he limps out on the wrong leg.”

18. The Other End Of The Spectrum

“Had an elderly man who was in his early 70s (long term smoker) who came in with shortness of breath, trouble breathing, and a little bit of a cough and occasional production of blood tinged sputum. <— that last one is a bad sign

He also complained of a little bit of back pain he’d been having that started about a month ago after he was helping his son move. When asked to rate his pain he said 2/10 (‘not too bad’).

He has no other history, always had good blood pressure, no cholesterol issues, no diabetes… has a little bit of anxiety/depression, unmedicated.

So we check him out. Reduced breath sounds all across, more so on the left lower side. Tenderness to palpation in the lower back, he jumped when we touched it, said it was about a 3/10 when we touched it.

Check vitals, his blood pressure is 180/85 (this happens with severe pain), he has no fever, and his heart rate is in the 120s (also happens with pain).

Get scans and labs. He has three broken vertebrae, probably pathological (caused by cancer) a pleural effusion (it was malignant, as in, caused by cancer), and a few masses in his left lung. Guy had stage 4 lung cancer that spread to his back, caused his back to break, and he said he had 2-3/10 back pain.

Either he was set on fire in his childhood and then beaten with 2x4s filled with nails then rolled in broken glass… or he was faking not having pain. This is someone who we would describe as a ‘minimizer’.

Not the typical story you expected, I guess.

He got his surgery, and the next day wanted to leave the hospital cuz he had to do some paperwork and pay his bills, didn’t take any of the pain meds offered to him, except at night to help him sleep.

I hope he’s still alive, was a really nice guy.”

19. Domestic Drama At A Crash Scene

“Firefighter/first responder here, I once had a call for a ‘vehicle that struck a power pole’ at 2 am on a major street. We arrive on scene to find a telephone pole snapped in half and a car that had crossed 8 lanes of traffic to hit this pole straight on. We found the “patient” lying on the ground next to her car, laying on her back with arms crossed across her chest clutching her phone. Right next to her were her shoes laid perfectly next to each other by her feet. As I approached her I could see her squint one eye trying to see what I was doing. I know she was faking by all of this and called an officer over to ‘help hold C-spine’ I called her name with no response so next step was painful stimulus, grinding your knuckles into the sternum is an acceptable way to check, the second I said ‘I’m going to give her a sternum rub’ she was awake. Right when we finished packaging her for the ambulance I noticed a man talking to the police obviously drunk. That’s when I noticed she smelled of alcohol too, turns out the woman called 911 to report her own accident and the husband told the police they were drunk, got in a fight, and she decided to leave even when he told her not too, it was a fake suicide attempt to make him feel bad so he pressed charges for grand theft auto and totaling the car.”

20. Avoiding Football Practice

Like a month ago at the ER, a mother came with her 10yo son who claimed to have a monstruous knee pain and that he couldn’t move. So when we came to his room he was lying down (important for continuity)

X-ray was normal, knee was normal, not red, no swelling.

Each time we would touch his knee or try to move his leg or his thigh he would scream like we were torturing him, and his scream seemed genuine.

But with every test being normal and no explanation to this atypic pain we were confused and thinking he’s faking it.

So we asked him to try to move his leg on his own and he would barely move it and scream, then we asked him if he felt pain when standing up he said yes, we asked him to get up and surprise : he got up by bending his knee, fastly but we saw it, he was trying to simulate but he didn’t fully succeed.

I mean it was so obvious, he amlost made a 90 angle with his knee and as soon he touched the ground and got up he started to scream etc.

All of that was just the little boy simulating to avoid going to his football training.”

21. Threat Of Large Needle Cures Unconscious Patient

“When I was a junior medical student without much experience on the wards, a homeless patient came in who was ‘unconscious’. Except, she wasn’t. I mean, obviously wasn’t.

The doctor would hold up her limp arm, position her hand over her head and let go. If she was truly unconscious, her hand would hit her in the face. Somehow, every time he let go of her hand, it would swerve at the last minute and miss her face.

In an effort to rouse her, the doctor loudly asked me to go and get ‘the biggest needle you can find’. When I returned, he asked me if I’d ever taken blood before. I replied that I had not. He said that as Miss X was unconscious, this would be an excellent opportunity for me to have some one-on-one teaching on the subject. He also said that this would ordinarily be extremely painful for someone with such a large needle being used.

Unfortunately, she ‘woke up’ at that point, so I didn’t get to learn how to take blood.”
