april 29: 京都 pt 1

April 29 marks the start of ゴールデンウィーク (Golden Week) in Japan! There is no class for a whole week because there are 4 national holidays during the week (Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day) and many offices tend to be closed as well. That means there are going to be a lot of people traveling during this time period.

About a week ago, a group of friends and I visited Waseda’s Co-Op Store to purchase Shinkansen tickets to go to Kansai. There is 学割 (Gakuwari) or student discount for these tickets. Since you’re going to be on a Student VISA to Japan, you’re not going to be eligible for JR Pass. You can get the 学割 printed at a machine in Building 14, 25, or 7. Bring those with you to the Co-Op Store; you will need to print 2 copies because one copy is only for one-way. So when you go to the Co-Op Store, you fill out a form with where you want to go and use a timetable book to find times for when you want your tickets for. A really nice lady at the store was assisting us after seeing us struggle for a long time. It would be very helpful if you or a friend knew a little Japanese so you can communicate with the people there. I’m not too sure if they knew much English because we mainly spoke in Japanese. The form that you need to fill out is also in Japanese, so it would help a lot if you knew a little of the language (or Google Translate might help). If not, I am sure the people at the Co-Op Store may know minimal English to help you get by since Waseda has a lot of foreign students. We bought a one-way ticket on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and then another one-way ticket from Osaka back to Tokyo. The total came out to $233.35 inclusive of base fare, shinkansen fare, and seat reservation fee. (If you are just a tourist, the JR Pass makes your trip a lot cheaper! But take note that you can’t use JR Pass for the fastest trains - Nozomi and Mizuho. You can use it on Hikari, Kodama, & Sakura). Another side note, taking a plane might be cheaper than taking the shinkansen at one point, so you might want to check flights as well before booking!

Just moments before boarding the shinkansen to Kyoto~ We took the Fukutoshin Line from Nishi-Waseda to Shinjuku San-Chome to transfer to the Marunouchi Line to get to Tokyo Station. I think we just went with the fastest route Google Maps showed us at that time. It might be faster to actually just take the Tozai Line from Waseda Station instead. So take your pick. When you get to Tokyo Station, if I remember correctly, you first put in your base fare ticket. Remember to take the base fare ticket with you. Before you get onto the shinkansen, there’s going to be another ticket gate, & you have to put both your base fare ticket with the Shinkansen Super Express ticket. Remember to take them with you so you can get out of Kyoto Station when you arrive. Also, this is a given but leave early. You’re going to need as much wiggle room as possible in case you get lost in Tokyo Station. Make sure you have ample time to make mistakes because things happen.

Finally on the shinkansen!! It was my first time riding the shinkansen! There was plenty of leg room (enough for me to keep my luggage in front of my legs) and the seats are super comfortable too. It runs super smoothly on the tracks that it put me to sleep after I was able to spot Mount Fuji out the window. (I took a video, but it’s hard for me to insert clips because my phone doesn’t like syncing them onto my laptop. Perhaps I’ll figure it out one day!! - Stay Tuned!) At one point, my ears felt like they were being plugged as if we were on an airplane. I think this is due to the fast speed that the train is running at, which causes a change in air pressure.

Having a bentou on the shinkansen is a classic!! I highly recommend this. Thanks to my dormy Gustavo for letting me take a picture of his food!! :) (and sorry Gustavo that I get the better angle LOL) Honestly, I slept 3 hours the night before so I didn’t have any appetite in the morning. Definitely learned my lesson to not go out the whole day the night before when I haven’t done laundry nor packed for this trip. But that is another story to tell at a different time!

We arrived at Kyoto Station!! I honestly don’t remember taking this photo, but what’s important is - WE’RE HERE!!! I think it took about 2.5 hours to get from Tokyo to Kyoto via Nozomi. Definitely got some good sleep on this train ride.

We dropped off our luggage in coin lockers at the station because it was too early for us to check into our Airbnb. In the meantime, we decided to walk around because guess who planned our week trip in this group!!! - NO ONE. We are young and like to live life on the edge. (Just kidding, maybe only slightly.) But pictured above is Kyoto Tower! There’s actually a huge food court at the foot of Kyoto Tower called Kyoto Tower Sando. We decided to check that place out a little later.

Since no one has planned anything, we thought this map would be super useful for us to pick sightseeing areas. I hope you can get some ideas too from this map if you visit Kyoto! (And hopefully, you plan ahead.) Also, know that there should be a bus ticket discount at the machines somewhere!! Since no one has done research, we only noticed it after using our IC cards around the area; I randomly peeped through a window and saw an unlimited bus pass. According to the quick search I just did, it is a 1-day bus pass that allows you to take unlimited rides on the Kyoto City Bus and Kyoto Bus. It is 600 yen for adults and is beneficial if you take the bus 3 times or more in a day. There is a flat rate for bus rides in Kyoto - 230 yen per ride. You enter through the back of the bus and exit through the front where you will then pay. This is a little different from Tokyo buses because you enter & pay at the front for Tokyo buses (which is similar to New York!)

We decided to walk to the Museum of Kyoto from Kyoto Station. I think it was over a half hour walk or maybe even longer... And when we got there, some people didn’t want to pay for admission so we didn’t go inside the actual museum part. Instead, we walked around the souvenir stores. There was a very beautiful postcard store in here for I think only 200 yen each. If you like paintings, you’ll really like the postcards. I decided to buy... ice-cream..! from 京あめとにまる, which sources their green tea from 宇治 (Uji). Probably not the best thing to eat as your first meal of the day, but I can’t reject matcha and anko. It was 380 yen for this cone! I’m going to miss cheap matcha cones when I get back to New York. This was so goood! I wish I could eat it now.

After killing some time at the shops, it was time to go back to Kyoto Station to pick up our luggage and then check into our Airbnb. We got lost trying to find it, but we eventually made it. I honestly wanted to break down onto the floor from dragging my luggage everywhere because it was so exhausting. That’s when I learned, I need to go back to the gym to train so I can become stronger!! There was this mural to our Airbnb room. Definitely cramped for 4 people because we had luggage with us. Also, the air ventilation wasn’t the best. We were able to smell smoke coming from somewhere nearby. It was a self check-in hostel type of Airbnb so there were people living upstairs. Also, to our surprise, the door to this hostel wasn’t lockable. It was lockable for your own personal room, but the door to enter into the hostel was just a sliding door. So basically anyone can come into the living room, kitchen area, and shower rooms. Honestly, that made me feel a little uneasy, but because we were in Japan, it’s a lot safer compared to New York.

There was a lot of manga (Naruto & One Piece) and very retro games in this Airbnb! The gaming systems went back to as far as the Nintendo 64! It was definitely one of my childhood gaming systems. The guys played Mario Party for a bit, and I decided to plan the itinerary for the rest of this trip. The bad thing is that the Wi-Fi wasn’t working in this Airbnb! I had to hotspot my phone data onto my laptop. After the itinerary was finished, we decided to go eat.

We passed by 京都勝牛 (Kyoto Katsugyu) the first time we were trying to find our Airbnb, so we knew we had to walk back for dinner! The line for this place was out the door and progressively got longer as we waited. We ordered the katsu set (140g) that came with rice, miso soup, & cabbage. With this set, there are 4 ways to eat your katsu: curry, wasabi soy sauce, Japanese salt, and “Worcester sauce.” Honestly, I’m not too sure about the translations they used on the menu, but they were all really good! I think my favorite one might be the curry. It is a cash only place and this set was 1,382 yen, which isn’t bad at all for wagyu beef! Also, there are unlimited rice refills!! Perfect because I barely ate anything all day. I guess I was too stressed from settling in that I didn’t even realize that I barely ate all day. But it was a really good dinner!! I remember being very sad while taking my last bite of the katsu. I’ll come back here for sure!

That indicated he could carry as memorable and convincing performance as he does with the character Cal,”

Were every hilarious in their own right, and Orlando Sentinel’s Roger Moore believed that Rogen had his moments in the film whereas,

Moira Macdonald of The Seattle Times said the actor was “droopily deadpan”.

He followed this with a small role in You, Me and Dupree (2006), a critically panned comedy featuring Matt Dillon, Kate Hudson, and Owen Wilson.

Hi there! I’m always taking questions, since I don’t get very many to begin with, so I’m totally okay with basic bitch questions. XD

Gonna put them behind a cut!

Favorite colors?

Hmm…I’m weird in that I have a lot, but they all have their reasons I suppose. I never really put stock in a “favorite color” for myself, because there are a lot of situations where certain colors stand out from others.

I like red because it’s a very strong, attractive color. It draws the eye and catches one’s attention better, and to be honest…I like catching people’s eye. I’ve slowly started getting a few pieces of red clothing primarily because of that, and also I think it looks good with blond hair.

I like blue and its many shades and hues because of its calming nature. I’m honestly drawn to aqua and cyan quite a bit. There’s nothing really much to this one other than I just…like it.

Purple, especially dark purple, is a regal color that I’ve really come to enjoy, but again, I’d prefer it to be dark. My school colors were purple and gold, which looked alright, but the purple was a brighter shade, and I…eh…I’d rather forget high school I suppose. It wasn’t bad, just kinda…blegh.

And of course when it comes to characters in games and the like, I try to match what would fit them if possible. I like my paladins to wear white and gold, I like healers to wear blue or green, rogues in black or other dark colors, etc.

To be honest, it’s easier to pick colors I don’t like. I’m not too fond of orange, since at its brightest I find it annoying and when it’s dark it looks…shitty. I’m torn on the color brown. It can often look great on characters with other accents, but sometimes people choose like..the ugliest shades of brown and it can really ruin a character for me. :P

I’m okay with gray. It serves its purposes in the right places…like giving me a cool last name. (My mother’s maiden name is Gray, and if I ever become an author, I’d use that last name as part of my pen name.)

Favorite type of gecko?

Hah, haven’t really put thought into this one. I find them all cute! Although I like green geckos myself, although that’s a bit of a stereotypical answer. XD

Any hobbies besides writing?

Hmm…it’s mostly just video games. I’ve mentioned before though that it’s not just the playing of those games I’m into. I also really enjoy learning about the industry, the ins and outs of how things work. How developers work in their environment, what publishers do exactly, and that kind of thing. I actually like to keep myself up to date on game culture and news.

I do like reading up on melee weaponry from around the world. It usually stops short of say, siege weaponry and the like, but I love learning about swords, spears, axes, and weapons of a more exotic nature. I’m also still a fan of reading up on science, although my college days are long past and I’ve lost the mathematical part of it, I can still grasp the concepts of the more advanced stuff. Astrophysics is a big favorite.

I guess I’m not much of a hobbyist. Outside of writing, I just like to kick back and relax with my time off. Watch youtube vids, play games, just take a load off. The benefit to this is that when a new hobby presents itself, I can acclimate and adapt to it if I find it something worthwhile to pursue, y’know? I’m pretty easy going and can stay entertained with just a conversation for the most part when I’m with other people.

Do you collect anything?

Other than swords and the like? :P

Although I suppose the answer is no, I don’t really collect anything for the sake of collecting. Every now and then at work I’ll find a strange quarter or currency from another country that I’ll slip into my pocket, but that’s pretty much it. You’d be amazed at how many people think silver dollars are just quarters! XD

But even then, if it’s an odd coin I’ll collect it. A penny that, through a chemical reaction has turned gold? Yeah I’ll snag it. Another penny that’s straight up silver? Yep, got one of those. I even have a coin from the United Arab Emirates around here somewhere. Can’t find it right now though. Bummer.

I also like getting videogame-related trinkets every now and then. I have a Bowser amiibo, Sans and Papyrus figures, Yoshi and Bowser Mario Kart from my work’s happy meals. I don’t really collect them though for two reasons: Money, and space. I used to collect Magic: The Gathering cards as a kid. Used to. Boy was that an expensive habit.

Favorite Food?

If I had to pick, I’d have to go with a well-prepared steak. If prepared well enough, steak sauce isn’t even needed. I’ve had some like that before. Just…perfect flavor from start to finish.

I also like Mongolian BBQ, or a nice rotisserie chicken dinner.

Favorite Music / Bands?

So, for music in general, I’m always drawn to a good melody over anything else. Something that sounds good to the ear that can elicit a good emotional response. It really triggers my writing brain and helps me come up with scenes to match to the music at times.

As for bands, yep! I’m a big Nine Inch Nails fan, from The Fragile onward. Never got into The Downward Spiral, but it has a few tracks I do like. Trent Reznor’s just so good at evoking emotions with his music, especially the darker ones that I like to explore in writing every now and then. Along with this is “How To Destroy Angels,” another band consisting of Reznor his wife Mariqueen Maandig, and Atticus Ross. Their first full-length album was a chilling, amazing look into the possibilities of the Technological Singularity. It’s such a great album.

Another favorite band of mine is Vertical Horizon, and their song, “I’m Still Here,” is probably one of my absolute favorites.

Fear Factory is another big favorite of mine. I do like metal, but I don’t really like the screaming so much…it tends to sound almost lifeless to me at points…no melody to it, or at least, not one that strikes my fancy. Fear Factory’s Burton Bell though has a fantastic voice, both for screaming AND singing.

Fear Factory is also one of the hardest working bands I’ve ever been a fan of. They’ve consistently put out albums every…3 years or so since they started, and haven’t stopped yet. They’re currently working on another one, and I’m hyped for it!

Other bands I like include: Imogen Heap/Frou Frou, Linkin Park (yeah yeah, shut up, he’s got a great voice), Celldweller (I’m weirdly proud of Klayton and his success. I remember when Celldweller started, now he’s producing music for trailers, movies, and games, including even Killer Instinct!), Gravity Kills (chatted with the frontman, Jeff Scheel once for a little bit on twitter. He’s a pretty cool guy!), The Crystal Method, Carpenter Brut, God Lives Underwater (RIP :C), The Birthday Massacre, and Zeromancer.

Of course, I also enjoy Ninja Sex Party, Starbomb, Steel Panther, and Nashville Pussy, for music of a more comedic bent. XD Danny Sexbang’s former band, Skyhill, is also really calming to listen to. His voice is so astoundingly good!

I wanna give a shout-out to a trio of “radio songs” that I think are brilliant and I listened to as much as anything else this year: “Cheap Thrills” by Sia with Sean Paul, “Red Dress” by MAGIC!, and “Treat You Better” by Shawn Mendes. I think sometimes it’s easy to discredit a song for being catchy and vapid, but those were the songs that gave me some of the best memories this year.

This was a pretty slow year for me and video games, particularly the second half. Despite the 3DS and the Vita both being pretty much dead by the end of the year, there were a few real gems. It’s worth mentioning that I haven’t played BoxBoxBoy! or Shantae: Half Genie Hero yet, both sequels to games that ranked high on my list last year. I’m pretty confident I’m going to love them.

I'll never forget the day I heard the news. I'll never forget that moment sitting in JJ's old bedroom with him and Joe, I'll never forget the way my heart sunk when he got the call. The way his face dropped and the way he said, "I'll let em know" He didn't even have to tell me. I already knew. Because a week prior we lost 9 other kids from Falls to this shitty disease. A week prior I found out you had been trying to get clean, and I remember saying, "I hope he gets this sorted out so he's not next." But you were. And I still wish I would've made it more clear how much you meant to me while you were still here. That year my brother went away to college, you Shoop and Drew stepped in as my big brothers. You guys took me under your wing and gave me some pretty rad memories. You got me into some trouble and also gave me some pretty great advice. Remember the night we partied at my moms and the next morning we all woke up, watched the World Cup and played Mario Kart on the big screen in the living room? And you and I both fell asleep on the bigass dog bed the night before. Or the time you and Shoop snuck over to my moms while you were tripping and climbed up onto the roof and sat under the stars with me. All those nights out at Muffin Lane where you'd try and race Mitch in your beat up old pick up truck as if you even had a shot at winning. My 16th birthday when you and Shoop took me to El Meson and we tried to see who could eat the most hot sauce and you guys convinced me that pouring sugar packets on my tongue would soak up all the heat. (Or was that my 17th birthday? It's been so long and all those antics kind of blur together now.) Or all the nights we'd walk through the streets of falls in the middle of the night, that 3am peaceful silence surrounding us while we talked about life and smoked black and milds on the porch of that abandoned house by the High Bridge. Someone's moved into that house since then. Every memory I have of high school, especially early high school when I was struggling to find my way, you're in almost all of them. You helped shape me into who I finally became and I wish you could be here to see it. You'd be so proud. I miss you, buddy. I miss the innocence of 15 and how much I looked up to you, even if you only were a couple years older. I never knew all those silly things we did would some day mean this much to me. Things aren't as bright anymore without that smile to light up the room. And it's been one of those weeks where I'd do anything for one of those world famous James Taylor hugs. We're all still pushing through but it's pretty empty without ya. I hope I'm still making you proud. Keep DJ and Ricky company up there and I'll see you guys when I get there. Happy birthday, James.
