Still thinking about the long day I spent working on a research paper at a library in a wealthier area then I normally do. I went to wait outside on a bench for my ride, but ended up awkwardly sitting right by the entrance as dozens of children and parents entered (a kids only activity had just started inside) and as this one boy walks by I hear him pointedly ask if I was homeless. I was wearing my black jacket and trusty button up I've had for 5+ years (it looks fine, just a bit wrinkled) and had my hand me down backpack with me (which looks new because it's good quality even if it's gone through a few siblings). I gave the most bewildered look to who I assume was this kids mother and she rushed him inside.
I just remember looking down at myself and being so confused. Like, this child has clearly never seen a proper Detroit homeless person or an overworked academic, bless his sheltered existence. I don't even blame him, it's just funny to me now.
