On 6/28 I’m hoping to do a new mini series on my little channel called The Thirty Dollar Laundry Club.
I’m a little nervous, because several people on TikTok already do stuff like this and they’re waaay better at it than I am but hey, this is my tiny little slice of something weird to try so try it I shall.
I was in the salon one afternoon, desperately missing my friends because we’ve all been separated in the pandemic. I was wearing the uniform- all black- and as much as I tried to keep it within my aesthetic I was struggling because it’s so easy to ruin things with bleach in the hair industry. I just wasn’t feeling very gender validated in my style, and I’m a passionate Autumn/Fall lover so I almost always forget to buy summer clothes. Not to mention the huge style RUT I was in.
Then I just started wondering... how would my costume designer friends dress me if they could style an outfit for me? Not a character in a play, not an image I’m portraying, but Me? How would my close friend, the Swamp Witch, style me? What do their choices say about how I’m perceived as I move through the world? Would my non-binary friends or queer friends be better at picking something for me than my cis friends?
In episode two, I work with my friend Gemma to style me for a day and they were entirely charming and engaged the shop employees in helping us along on our mission. “It’s a social experiment they’re doing on their channel,” they told the manager of the shop. “They’re doing a social experiment!” And I realized that it kind of was. My intentions had originally been ‘cool shopping date with friends’ and it had turned into some really interesting and thoughtful outings with people I love.
I’m having a maudlin day. It’s been raining for a week and the threats that inspired me/drove me to write [redacted] are haunting me once more. But even if it isn’t the most professional quality set of episodes, even if it’s just silly people shopping - I was not able to film in any of the stores- I’m pretty proud of myself for at least trying something new.
The Rules of the #thirtydollarlaundryclub:
1. You have 30$ to purchase the entire outfit. (Except shoes- I have a billion shoes) --- I provide the cash to my friends
2. It must be whatever YOU perceive a ‘non binary’ outfit would be
3. Must be season-relevant. Currently we’re shopping for summer.
4. I, the subject, cannot give you any feedback. YOU pick the outfit.
5. I have to wear the outfit for at least one day, no matter what. (the exception being if it doesn’t fit my body).
