Venom Review
I wasn't hyped for this movie, but as time went on it was a bit of a gamble because it had some cool looking trailers but not much to back it up, so I took the bait and rolled with it and ended up wanting to see it. It comes out, bad reviews, not to mention the embargo they put on the reviews so they knew it was bad. I had only little hope because some people said they were giving it a bad review to promote A Star Is Born and I just looked at some spoilers to get a feel for it. Lost that hope. The actors explained themselves on Twitter. "I did it for the money and Tom Hardy" "My favorite 40 minutes of the film were cut" yeah so the actors didn't like their own movie.
I ended up just watching it yesterday and to be honest it doesn't feel like a movie, I remember 2/3 of the way in I'm like "We're in the third act...This is where the motocycle scene is? This is where we see Venom full fledged?!" and by the end I was like "Oh, that's it.." it reminded me a little of a more characterized version of how Fantastic Four (2015) was. But let's get one thing straight, learn to say symbiote! The subject of the frickin movie! In the trailer we hear Symb-"i"-ote, and at one point Symbi-"it" then they correct it in the movie with Symb-"e"-ote why don't you make up your mind-"ote". I prefer the proper way of saying it "SYMB-"E"-OTE". I like Eddie Brock towards the beginning, but for the rest of the movie (about when he gets infected then on.) he's just in it for the ride and screams every now and then. Also why did Dora choose Eddie to go to after everything that's happened? What made her think he would help? Also Riot goes from host to host in the entire movie without a problem of achieving symbiosis as much as the others, then finally makes his way to Carlton Drake...why? Why did he target Drake? And Jameson is at the beginning...does that mean they took J. Jonah for this universe? I wanted him for the MCU. (though nobody tops JK Simmons)
You really have to shut off your brain to enjoy this movie and forget prior knowledge of Venom from comics and other sources, I can't say I didn't have a little fun though. In fact it was so stupid, I found it funny, that never happens for me, I didn't expect that. You're trying to tell me Venom, who is an alien with no prior knowledge of how to drive can suddenly drive a motorcycle much better than Eddie who has probably driven that motorbike for years? There's a lot of banter like "Venom No!" and then he'll be like "Venom YES!". I don't like that he's "a loser compared to the others" that's stupid, this isn't Transformers. When he makes his way back to Eddy and he says "we are Venom" for the first time and Eddie asks "What made you change your mind?" then Venom says "You Eddie"...how? Did I miss something? Did they cut it out in editing? What suddenly makes Eddie so much better? That's the thing, there's no memorable dialogue and when it is, it's used in a scene that isn't meaningful. It's almost like they knew they wanted that dialogue in the film but didn't know where to put it. Venom is presumably dead in the rocket scene and then about 2 minutes later is revealed to be back with Eddie which we knew would happen but so soon?? What's the point in making people think he's dead? Is this Amazing Spiderman 2 all over again?
There are characters that I know, I recognize, and I see in this movie but they are just there kind of for the sake of being there. That's makes it poorly written. (Not to mention the straight commercial for Into the Spiderverse in the end credits, shameless promotion there) Look at Cletus Kassidy in the end credits, we know he turns into Carnage in the comics but unlike the movie in the comics, Eddie is in jail with him and then escapes leaving some of the symbiote behind which fuses with Cletus. Rather than Eddie is just interviewing him...for no apparent reason other than he's a killer. Then he's isolated in his own "cage" within a cell in what seems like a straight jacket and you mean to tell me there's blood on what little wall there is in it. Poor set design for starters, if you're going to write on the wall, give a little room to do so and I know the blood is just for effect but where is the blood from? Him? He's in a straight jacket with handcuffs so it couldn't be a guard.
I have to say that this is better than the Amazing Spiderman 2 (simply for that lobster scene) but it's nothing to be hyped about, it's not the big deal that we wanted. 6 out of 10. I have a personal connection with the Black Cat character and "Black and Silver" is supposed to be their next film, I don't want Black Cat's first 'proper' appearance to be a bad one and handled this way. (not counting that Felicia Hardy we saw in AS2) if anything save her for a future Spiderman movie in the MCU or reevaluate your idea of spinoffs please. I'd much rather wait another 10 years for Black Cat than see her mishandled.
