Tbh the idea of Baatar as a hostage to provoke Kuvira could have actually worked really well. The show made Baatar too much of a pushover and Kuvira way to cold and quick to let him go, but the idea of team avatar taking Baatar as a hostage and Baatar is like “sure okay good luck with that” because instead of being willing to sacrifice him, Baatar is the one thing she’d actually burn it all down for so now her berserk switch has been flipped because her One Person has been taken from her and the team have made things a thousand times more difficult for themselves because with Republic City now under their belt and her loyalists to look over things and keep in communication with her, Kuvira can now just hunt the gang down with all the murderous intent of a feral animal and she just gets to enter her slasher villain era lol. I’d also give Baatar more to do of course, also give him a chance to actually converse with his family like they really need to. Also would be very interesting if he and Asami started talking a lot and realizing they have a lot in common. I just personally prefer the idea that Kuvira and Baatars’ primary failings as leaders is that they are not as self sacrificial as people might thing they are (mostly Kuvira, everyone already assumes as much about Baatar), especially when it comes to each other. A while back when a friend of mine watched Korra they were surprised by the ending when Kuvira chose to just sacrifice Baatar with little thought, saying that “they expected her to destroy the city in response, like her going ‘Okay well then I’ll make sure the building he’s in is the last one left standing’” and I think about that a lot because man.... I would have loved that lol
