hi! can I ask you for crime movie recommendations, or just a list of your personal favorites? I've been getting super into crime fiction recently (books and movies), and I'm making a watchlist of movies I want to check out next. heist movies, gangster films, thrillers, anything involving criminals is interesting to me, and I'd really love to hear about your faves! have a nice day <3
hiii, Estelle! oh I love a good crime movie! I grew up on gangster and mob movies tbh so there's some obvious choices like the godfather and goodfellas. continuing with Scorsese, I love casino. I think it's somewhat underrated Scorsese, idk i just don't see it mentioned that often, but it's super fun. the departed as well, people talked shit about it, but it's great. then mean streets, serpico, taxi driver, dog day afternoon, heat, collateral, thief, chinatown. pretty much every Tarantino ever, obviously reservoir dogs and pulp fiction, jackie brown is my favourite and the sort of song of the movie is across 110th street from the movie of the same name, so I'd def recommend that one, it's an underrated flick. heist movie-wise, ocean's eleven kind of the king here. then set it off, bound, inside man, widows, the italian job (the original), topkapi and rififi are underrated ones, the asphalt jungle, the friends of eddie coyle, the taking of pelham 123, the thomas crown affair (the remake), dead presidents, out of sight, point break, the driver, hustlers, a fish called wanda is sooo funny. sexy beast is such a great and intense movie.
if you'd enjoy something criminal and psychosexual, I'd recommend two 60s movies the housemaid and who killed teddy bear? the cook, the thief, the wife and her lover is an insane sexy one. blue velvet fits here as well. Guy Ritchie made the same movie like 4 times tbh, but I love snatch and lock, stock and two smoking barrels, I think the man from uncle is also a fun one. Brian De Palma is good at corny and sleazy and I kinda love his scarface. body double is silly but I love a good voyeuristic movie. along those lines you obviously have rear window and peeping tom, and then to continue with Hitchcock, I love rope, psycho, and think dial m for murder is quite overlooked. natural born killers, true romance and the doom generation for something stupid and bloody. mandatory Fincher recs like se7en and zodiac. I love the usual suspects, it has that twist at the end that for me personally works even upon rewatches. another underrated movie is joy house with beautiful Jane Fonda and Alain Delon in his prime. faster pussycat kill kill is just pure fun and sleaze and gorgeous ladies. I love lady snowblood and scorpion with Meiko Kaji but I know you've seen those. tokyo drifter is a stylish one as well. some obvi french new wave recs like breathless and pierrot le fou. I'd say there's nothing quite like the atmospheric the night of the hunter. I love drive too, it's all style and the only substance is blood. uncut gems and good time are quite good too. out of something extra new, I enjoyed love lies bleeding more than I expected. seven psychopaths and in bruges for something cynical and silly. then fargo, no country for old men, the big lebowski. filth and trainspotting for something utterly dirty and disgusting. not to forget Hannibal Lecter, we can't not mention the silence of the lambs and manhunter. also badlands, dirty harry, carlito's way, eastern promises, the third man, the big sleep, double indemnity, gun crazy, bonnie and clyde, foxy brown, american psycho, the talented mr ripley, prisoners. something more along crime drama strange days, fallen angels, the city of the rising sun and made in hong kong.

Which one is worst Clarice 2021 or Hannibal Rising ? How would you rank the movies and TV shows (including Clarice 2021 TV show) ?
I mean, they were both blatant cash grabs, let's get that straight. Hannibal Rising did not need to exist. I don't know who the fuck told Thomas Harris "audiences really want to see a tragic past for Hannibal Lecter" (yes, I know it was talked about in the Hannibal book) but that's crap. We love him as a character because nothing happened to him, HE happened. But I do find Hannibal Rising a lot less frustrating as a story because... it can so easily be viewed as a bullshit story that Hannibal told someone like Chilton who was like "so why are you the way you are?" Kind of like those bullshit sob-stories Joker told Harleen. So, Hannibal Rising is good revenge flick... but not a good Hannibal Lecter origin story. Personally, I don't think he needs one. At least not like that.
Clarice, on the other hand, was done by a bunch of high-horse wankers who kept on banging on about how much they respected the source material and how "we didn't want to do what Jonathan Demme did so well" while blatantly copying what he did so damn well (not to mention being a half-assed Hannibal knockoff...) because they were too cowardly and creatively bankrupt to do their own thing. Also I'm sorry, I can't recognise those characters as being the same from the Silence book and film. Especially not one year on from the events of Silence. It was way too complicated, the new "twists" were just insulting, and I basically call "bullshit" that THIS is what happened to Clarice Starling after the events of Silence. Which sucks because this could have been an awesome sequel... instead we got that. So.. yep, Clarice is worse than Hannibal Rising.
Okay, so the rankings, imo.
1. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - I mean... how could I not put this first?
2. Manhunter (1986) - Brian Cox is soooo underrated as Hannibal, ditto with William Petersen as Will Graham
3. NBC's Hannibal (2013-2015) - when it comes to modern horror shows, Hannibal is the one to beat, in my mind.
4. Red Dragon (2002) - I mean no disrespect but I didn't buy Edward Norton as Will Graham. But with that being said, this is a really strong film with a wonderful ensemble cast. And that last line gives me chills.
5. Hannibal (2001) - I get why people don't like this... I also wish we had gotten the book ending... but I still really enjoy this film.
6. Hannibal Rising (2007) - look, no one asked for this. This was so pointless. However, I thought Gaspard Ulliel was pretty good. Also I do love a villainous Rhys Ifans. But... jfc, no one asked for this!
7. Clarice (2021) - yep, this is the worst entry. But Rebecca Breeds was a great casting choice. I'd love to see her as Clarice in a better story.
Thanks for the question, nonnie :)

TV & film asks: 1, 4, 28, 29, 32, 60, 79, 91, 99
1. What is your favourite television show from the 80′s? Star Trek TNG off the top of my head, I can’t really think of any others from that 80s that I’ve seen all the way through
4. Who is your favourite female television character of all time? Oh god. Why. Probably Dana Scully, she’s been such a huge influence on me since I was like 12
28. What is your favourite movie from the 80′s? Romancing the Stone y’all I love that movie so much you have no idea
29. Favourite movie from the 90′s? The Mummy *chefs kiss*
32. Favourite movie villian? Hannibal Lecter. Creepy, charming, and has good manners.
60. A movie you hated but everyone else loves? Star Wars, I’ve tried to get into it so many times but I just can’t do it. I really don’t see the appeal apart from Carrie Fisher.
79. An underrated movie, in your opinion? Star Trek Nemesis. Every shits on it but I absolutely loved it.
91. Pick a movie, any movie. Now tell us your favourite scene? So I watched a terrible movie the other day called Red Sun Rising (Terry Farrell was in it and I’m weak but ngl I kinda enjoyed it because I’m a sucker for bad movies), anyway my favourite scene was the two main characters (both police officers forced to partner together, obvs romantic interests) go to one of your typical American make-out spots and he’s like “wow it’s so pretty up here, how’d you find it?” and she just blankly replies “a body was dumped here last year” and I laughed for 10 years
99. Best movie soundtrack? Lord of the Rings, I’ve listened to those soundtracks on repeat for years. Pacific Rim slaps too.

2019 & 2010s Best/Worst
Because I like lists and cataloguing the dumb shit I cared about. As my brother once said after seeing and reviewing NOW YOU SEE ME on a lazy Sunday, ‘Some would say it was a waste of time, others might say it was a colossal waste of time.’
I’ll admit, it’s a bit over-the-top. Particularly including the Pats, but yeah, in the Tom Brady era that started when I was 14 as a Freshman in high school to 33 years old now and wrapping up soon-ish (?), there’s not a chance in hell I’ll care as intimately about this shit. I grew up with it at just the right time.

Yes hannigram,,,👀👀👀 won't say anything about that but yes the show is very well written! Glad some more people might watch it now that it's not Netflix. I'm curious how it holds up to a fan of the movies? I've read the red dragon and watched silence of the lambs but nothing else, I'm mostly a tv show fan
Well I’ve been a huge fan of Silence of the Lambs since I was young and I did read the Thomas Harris novel (which I’m considering revisiting...my first read-through years ago I don’t think I was ready for a crime drama novel so it wasn’t what I was expecting).
As for comparisons, I’ve already heard a good amount of quotes that were in the movie Silence show up in Hannibal, which was based on the book Red Dragon, lol. It’s so interesting to see them in this show.
Will Graham’s character in the show is different than how he was portrayed by Edward Norton in Red Dragon (which is prob my second fav film, btw), but still plays Will as a person haunted by his extra imagination.
If you ever want to watch more Lector films, I’d suggest Red Dragon or Hannibal: Rising. Rising is underrated, in my opinion, and the guy who plays young Hannibal is really good.
The movie Hannibal is underwhelming to most people and is my least favorite, but I still like it regardless.

Text
movies of the month
Tu dors Nicole
Obnoxious.
Childhood of the Leader
Interesting - and accompanied by a Scott Walker soundtrack.
Valhalla Rising
The real inspiration for NBC’s Hannibal.
Knight of Cups
Quite obnoxious.
What Is Cinema?
Quite useless.
The Scarlet Empress
A thick gauze of smoke, skulls, and dreams.
The Fits
Surprising - and perfect.
10 Cloverfield Lane
Very surprising - and a great double bill with (John Carpenter’s) The Thing - with a perfect turn from John Goodman as the true face of men everywhere.
The Lobster
Yorgos Lanthimos puts on his Kafka suit with his Godard glasses.
Breaking News
I have yet to see a Johnnie To film that I don’t think about repeatedly. Cheng Siu-Keung remains a sadly underrated cinematographer but his work with To is one of the joys of cinema.
OJ: Made In America
Sickly fascinating.
Polyester
Uneven but fun.
The Asphalt Jungle
Tough, tender - doomed.
Purple Rain
I really wanted to end the year on those two encores at the end.
