I just love how Nico has such a complicated relationship with camp halfblood.
I feel like someone (either Jason or Percy I think Percy more likely he’s been at camp a lot longer than Jason and has beads that Jason doesn’t. Percy makes the necklace and beads and Jason and Percy give it to Nico together) (I’m sorry Solangelo shippers Will Solace does not exist in my mind right now this ain’t about him sorry). both of them gifted Nico a camp halfblood necklace with replicas of the beads for all the summers Nico missed. At first Nico wears it proudly as gift from two of his best friends.
But sometimes he has to interact with campers outside of his friend group. The way they treat Nico kinda makes him want to tear the necklace off and throw it into the ocean or bury it so deep underground it can never be found. He would never do that to such a well meaning gift from a friend though. The most he will do is take it off and put it in his pocket or in nightstand drawer. He’ll put it back on later when friends are around.
But even when he’s not wearing the necklace. He’ll always be there to protect camp halfblood. No matter what. No matter what he feels about the camp or most of the campers who are not his friends. He knows they’re not all that bad they’re just an intimidated and scared of him. They don’t deserve to be hurt. He chooses kindness.
He is one of the strongest demigods in the world and he knows it. He knows his power. He will always be standing on the pedestal of the Athena Parthenon statue he brought there watching over the valley and making sure all is well and peaceful. And anyone who tries obstruct that peace with be met with Nico’s vengeance.
Even when the Demeter kids are giving him so much shit for accidentally killing the grass or any kind of plant and yelling at him to leave camp cause he’s not wanted here because all he brings is death and bad omens and his powers freak everybody out and what good could he possibly do for this camp and the campers here. Haven’t they lost enough demigods in two wars why is the son of god of death here to take away more of them for no reason other than he just likes killing people he’s just naturally evil and unnatural and he’s a serial killer apparently. How many people has he killed??? Oh yeah well they technically don’t have any real proof that he’s killed people but there are rumors and with as many plants as he kills and with as many skeletons and zombies he uses he’s bound to be a serial killer at some point and also did you hear that all the skeletons and zombies he uses are actually people and animals that he killed just because he wanted an undead army and—
Even when the Apollo kids are invalidating the ostracism he’s been through and making fun of him for being a shut in grouchy old hermit unless certain older campers (his real friends mostly away at school plus a few Romans) are at camp and insisting he use his powers less or not at all because they think they know what’s good for him somehow when they don’t even know him. Or when they’re insisting he stop visiting the underworld (his home. his father’s house. the place he used to live and still visits on a regular basis. the place where most of his family lives) because it’s so dangerous and scary and sad and depressing down there it just has to be awful for his mental health and not to mention the physical trip to get all the way down there is bad for him too and surely he’s not capable of doing that all the time with his “severe chronic disabilities” that he should be laid up in bed in an infirmary bed for for the rest of his life and—
Even when the campers are annoying him and being difficult. Nico will still always be there protecting and watching over them. A lot of them are only still alive because Nico made a promise to someone (Percy).
