#I think I’ll use the same tengwa as I’ll use for [w] tho bc there’s more similarity between [w] and [u̯] to me than between [ʋ] and [u̯]

hmm debating how I should use vala and wilya/vilya in my phonetic/phonemic dutch tengwar mode…
#I’ve been basing it mostly off the english orthographic mode which in turn is obviously based on the general mode#they don’t use the vilya and use the vala for [w]#but according to my google searches vilya used to be used for [w] in quenya (which is why it used to be called wilya) but this later#shifted to [v]#and in my dutch mode I’d like to distinguish between the ‘english’ w ([w]) and the dutch pronunciation of the letter#(generally [ʋ] in the north and [β̞] in the south)#which are usually interpreted as sounding in between the english w and v#so like. which tengwa do I use for which sound#using vala for [w] and vilya for the others would be the most in line with the general mode#but it irks me bc of wilya’s former name/use#plus doing it the other way around would mean I could use the nasal tehta on the vala for the sequence [ɱʋ]/[ɱβ̞]#which I could write just as well with a w-tehta on the malta! but also that’s one more bow to write and I am lazy <3#but also. vilya + vala with o-tehta for the word ‘wou’ looks prettier bc I can connect the stems…#which brings me to the related issue of whether I should use vala or vilya for diphthongs ending in /u/…#can’t use the úrë bc I already use that for diphthongs ending in /y/…..#I think I’ll use the same tengwa as I’ll use for [w] tho bc there’s more similarity between [w] and [u̯] to me than between [ʋ] and [u̯]#elli rambles#anyway. I should go to bed.
