Take this article with a whole shaker of salt, because one of the teachers Rose Horowitch interviewed says that this article very much misrepresents the things she told her: The Atlantic Did Me Dirty
Ppl on the other hellsite losing their minds over this in every imaginable direction lmao
#I absolutely do not blame kids for not wanting to suffer through the classics#most of them are fucking tedious and irrelevant to their lives!#idk if they're even given any useful context for the era the authors wrote in and their lives#I sure wasn't and that made most classics even more pointlessly boring to me#frex: I HATED Jane Eyre as a 14-yr-old with zero context as to Brontë's life and very little knowledge of the era#I was only able to appreciate the book as an adult who had that context#I probably still wouldn't have liked it much if I'd had that back then#after all I was only having to read it because I'd already read The Hobbit#and was always going to resent it for not being as cool and fun as what the rest of the class got#but I maybe wouldn't have hated it every single page after her childhood friend died#and to be clear: I was a meganerd who read reference books for fun#visiting my grandparents and catching up on their National Geographics was one of my favorite things#I had more stamina for reading than anything else lmao
