In the last week, I have spent a majority of my time on Archive of Our Own reading Twyla and Alexis fics. In lieu of that, I thought I would create a recommendation post of my favorites, eight of them to be exact. I've wanted to do fic recommendations for awhile, and this seemed like the perfect place to start! Because the community is small, as I mentioned previously, there will be some author repetition, but they're all incredibly talented writers who I encourage you to support.

Check out Justine's list, too, it's linked at the very beginning! Theirs is a bit more extensive considering they've been here for longer and I've just recently dipped my toe in, however, this was a lot of fun for me to put together and I hope you enjoy nonetheless <3

All word counts, ratings, tags, and descriptions are taken directly from the stories themselves. Credit goes to the original creators for the information provided. Also, I've colored the titles according to the length of the fic. Here is the system I've devised to help you easily find stories within a certain a range of words without having to read too much while also helping to separate the titles a bit: PURPLE >2,000 words, BLUE 2,500-5,000 words, and PINK >5,000 words.

ok, but you can’t tell me that muggle-borns as well as some half-bloods did not bring any muggle inventions, gadgets, toys and just their culture with them when they went to Hogwarts.

I bet you 5 galleons that at least one gryffindor kid accidently flung himself down a flight of stairs trying to grind on the railings with his skateboard. And I’ll raise you another 5 galleons that Dumbledore was a giant fan of roller skates himself. (Madame Pomfrey was not happy)

And don’t try to tell me that not a single muggle-born had their care bear plushie with them. I’m 20 and I still have that thing laying around somewhere. Being away from home for the first time like this is scary, especially for a 11 year old. No matter how overwhelmingly cool Hogwarts may seem at first, there will be kids that get homesick sooner or later. And just imagining little first years silently crying in bed at night while hugging their care bears and wishing they could be back home breaks my heart.

On a brighter - and more ironic - note, I can see some muggle-borns bringing their gameboys before noticing that ehhh- Hogwarts and electricity have their difficulties.

Also, pure-bloods being absolutely confused as to why some of the muggle-borns (especially older ones) practically worship the figurines they brought. Is this a new cult we should know about? No, no, they are just nerds who love their Star Wars and Transformers.

Don’t forget movies. Muggle-borns making movie references only they and their friends get. “It’s a TRAP!” probably caught on fast. And don’t get me started on Princess Bride quotes. 

Music is a big topic too. Muggle-borns introducing all kinds of songs and music types to pure-bloods is my aesthetic. A drunk group of Gryffindors roaring “IT’S THE EYE OF THE TIGER - IT’S THE THRILL OF THE FIGHT!” before bawling their eyes out to “carried away by a MOONLIGHT SHADOW”. Then some Hufflepuffs trying to teach their Slytherin friends how to do the Thriller dance, the moonwalk, the running man or some good ol’ footloose is the purest as well as the most hilarious thing ever.

I could see spyrographs being a huge hit with some of the Ravenclaw - the Rubik’s cube too! There is also that one Slytherin(TM) that tries to convince her divination teacher that the magic 8-ball is actually magical.

And on Christmas? the muggle-borns that don’t go or can’t go home over the christmas holidays huddle together in the Great Hall on Christmas Eve and play things like Jenga, Guess Who?, Scrabble, Monopoly - all the good stuff. At first, the pure-bloods are a bit sceptical, but they join soon enough. And after explaining the rules, they begin to play. Everyone get a blast out of it! So when the time of curfew arrives, they are kinda down.

But then Dumbledore struts in and is like “Fuck it. It’s Christmas. I hereby permitt the students to stay longer." "But we cannot leave the children unsupervised..." "I’ve decided. Come on, Minerva, Severus - we’re going to join in!” “I did not agree to that” “Too bad! You’re coming”

(this becomes an annual tradition - and it’s FANTASTIC)

Bonus:

How could I forget musicals?? There must have been some musical enthusiasts at Hogwarts, or I swear I’ll eat a broom. Just think about the 5th years subtlely trying to convince Professor Flitwick to perform a number from Phantom of the Opera, Cats or Les Mis and him just being “sounds good why not?”

Or in later years with newer musicals (as well as movies) the refrences get insane. The quidditch commentator screaming “Laurens - DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR SHOT!” and the crowed going wild when Paul Laurens scores. And the mean girls™ going “You got a problem? You got a bone to pick? You’ve come so far! Why now are you pulling on my DICK?” from Heathers ‘Candy Store’ and then suddenly going into dance, to the pure confusion of the pure-bloods.

And one of the Gryffindor 4th years sending a howler on Sorting Ceremony that just goes “SOME–” and every last muggle-born breaks into “–BODY ONCE TOLD ME THE WORLD IS GONNA ROLL ME”. It was absolutely hysterical and made the nervous first years feel right at home.

Not to mention joke items. Fred and George may have been the kings of magical jokes but muggle jokes were not their strongsuit. And although they may not have appreciated the humerous intricacies of a whoopee cushion, their thoughts on muggle joke articles should soon be changed. Playing one to many jokes on a particular Slytherin, that boy was out for revenge. He managed not only to trap them in 1 finger trap, but several. In the end, Fred and George had to be send to Madam Pomfrey to get them out cause no one would help them. That Slytherin kid is regarded a legend btw. (From then on the twins took muggle joke items into their repertoire and made them magical. was it good? was it bad? no one knows)
