From Hollywood: GNR On Tour

Appetite for Destruction Tour

This 16 month long tour took place between 1987 and 1988 to promote the album. They did not headline any part of the tour, but opened for Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, and the Cult. This is the only tour that featured all five original members as Steven Adler would be replaced before the next one. The only other time that they all appeared on stage together would be in 1989 opening for the Rolling Stones. A couple of substitute musicians filled in temporarily during the tour. Steven Adler had broken his hand punching a street light, so Fred Court from Cinderella would play the drums in his place. Duff McKagan took a few shows off for his wedding, and his replacement was Kid Chaos from the Cult. In August 1988, the band would play the Monsters of Rock Festival in Castle Donington, England. The venue was filled to capacity with over 100,000 fans there to see the band. Despite pleas from Axl Rose, the crowd kept surging forward during their set sadly leading to two people being trampled to death during the show. Media would blame the band for not stopping there set, but the head of security defended them because they were unaware that anyone was in danger. The band immediately stop playing when they realized the extent of the injuries to the people that had been trampled. You can see the band playing at this festival in the “Paradise City” music video. The other concert captured in that video happened at Giants Stadium opening for Aerosmith. The manager of Aerosmith had this to say about Guns N’ Roses on that tour. “By the end of the tour, Guns N' Roses were huge. They basically just exploded. We were all pissed that Rolling Stone Magazine showed up to do a story on Aerosmith, but Guns N' Roses ended up on the cover of the magazine. Suddenly, the opening act was bigger than we were."

Use Your Illusion Tour

This tour would last 2 1/2 years from 1991-1993 equaling the longest tour ever in the history of rock and roll. The tour represented one of the most financially lucrative ones ever, while at the same time equaling the most controversial one as well. They would play 192 shows in 27 countries. In July 1991, the band played a show just outside of St. Louis at the Riverfront Amphitheater. Axl Rose saw that someone was videotaping the show, so he asked security to remove that person. Security failed to do so, so he took it upon himself to jump into the crowd to take away his camera. The singer would be separated from the fan in question, then pulled back onto the stage. At that moment Rose yelled, “Well, thanks to the lame-ass security, I'm going home!" He then walked off the stage. A few minutes later an angry crowd rioted over the fact that the concert had ended prematurely injuring a few fans. Ironically the band said later that they actually had planned to come back out on stage. The police were unable to arrest Axl Rose for the incident until almost a year later because they soon left the country on their worldwide tour. A judge would later rule that the front man had not incited the riot. Another incident occurred in Germany in November 1991, which emerged as Izzy Stradlin’s final show. The band scrambled to find a replacement eventually settling on Gilby Clarke. Dave Navarro of Janes Addiction had been considered, but in the end they decided against it. In 1993 toward the end of the tour, Clarke would break his arm creating the need for someone to play those shows. Izzy Stradlin filled in during that time, but after Clark had healed, Stradlin went back to Indiana. During the second leg of the tour, Axl Rose asked Nirvana to support them, but Kurt Cobain and the rest of the band declined. GNR then began dual tour with Metallica, who was promoting their gigantic self titled black album at the time. They played a show at Olympic Stadium in Montreal in August 1992, where James Hetfield was severely burned by pyrotechnics during their set. This created a three hour delay between sets as well as major technical difficulties. The stage monitors could not be tuned properly, so the band members could not hear anything at all on stage. On top of that, Axl Rose complained that his throat hurt, so he ended his set quite early. Another riot ensued leading to 10 people being injured and multiple arrests. Metallica would later blame Axl Rose for the riot saying if he had put on a great show, then the riot would have never happened. In a documentary about that tour by Metallica, footage was revealed that the two bands absolutely hated one another. Metallica lead singer James Hetfield would later say, “We couldn't relate to Axl and his attitude." The final show took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina in July 1993. This would be the last time that Duff McKagan, Slash, and Matt Sorum appeared on stage with Axl Rose for many years.

Not In This Lifetime Tour

Guns N’ Roses had completed a tour in 2014 with members from the Chinese Democracy album. Following that tour, lead guitarist Bumblebee decided not to play with the band anymore, and bassist Tommy Stinson decided to go back to his original band, The Replacements. Duff McKagan had been filling in on a part-time basis, so now the original member would be on the next tour permanently. The uncertainty over the next lead guitarist caused a great amount of speculation in the press. In May 2015, Slash would talk in an interview on one of the morning shows about him and Axl. “Well, we haven't really talked in a long time. But a lot of the tension that you were talking about has dissipated. We don't have all those issues anymore." In July 2015, the other lead guitarist DJ Ashba came out with a statement that he was leaving as well to work on a project with Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx. The rumor mill now went into overdrive about Slash returning to the band. In August 2015, Slash confirmed to a Swedish newspaper that he and Axl had actually spoken recently. This served as rather monumental news since they had not spoken since 1996. As for a reunion of the full lineup, that scenario was really never in the cards as Steven Adler admitted he had no contact with Axl, while Izzy Stradlin stated to Rolling Stone that he had no plans to be involved whatsoever. On Christmas Day 2015, a 15 second teaser trailer was released and shown before the new Star Wars movie featuring “Welcome To The Jungle.” Two weeks later, the official announcement was made that the group would be appearing at Coachella in 2016. A full tour was announced soon after with a multitude of openers including Skrillex, Wolfmother, Lenny Kravitz, Chris Stapleton, Zach Wylde, and a host of others. The very first show of the tour actually took place at the Troubadour as a secret show in April 2016. Steven Adler appeared at a couple of shows including Cincinnati and Nashville. In 2017, Izzy Stradlin participated in a sound check with the band in a stop near Indiana, but did not appear for the show that night. The tour is still going on as they have scheduled more dates when concerts come back in 2021. I plan to attend the show in Milwaukee. Look to my blog for a report on that.

I also love 21, dunno why Instruments: Fountain pen. JUST KIDDING! If it means musical instruments, I used to play piano and violin, but now I only know a bit to play the national anthem, that’s all... Currently I am into guitar, I have been trying for six months to learn how to play it from youtube tutorials, I can play couple of chords ;D What I’m wearing right now: whoa easy there, tagging game! Like now, during summer? Only a white sheet, it’s too hot (even though I sometimes want to go back to my warm blanket in case of monster night attacks). But on winter I can sleep with two wool blankets or even more... :)  Dream Job: Cardiothoracic Surgeon or any kind of doctor in general :)) It’s been my dream since I was two, I just love anatomy...<3 (probably I shouldn’t add my temporary dreams too, like becoming an actress, a Broadway singer, a detective or a novel writer and artist, should I?^^)  Dream Trip: aaah hard to say, but I think it would be a road trip in Arizona or any western desert part in general, while driving an old rusty convertible car (preferably an impala, of course), watching the ruby sun going down into the lakes painted on the azure sky and the stars sparkling brightly at night, feeling the freedom air and humming old rock songs (and singing “take it easy” when I get to Winslow, AZ :D)... Also, another dream trip would be in my favorite cities: NYC (to see Tiffany’s and Broadway :)), Paris (mainly the opera house and get to sing “bonjour Paris” like in Funny Face) and Rome (driving  a scouter or riding a vintage bike on the old streets, while picking ruby geraniums and singing Dean Martin songs aahh). Also, a trip to provence where I can dance through the lavender fields, the Alpes with warm small cottages or Greece would be wonderful (as long as I can admire the landscapes and the local culture with not so many people around... ^^) Favourite Food: grilled chicken with french fries and any kind of dessert (chocolate especially)<33 Also a bunch of sour soups, pasta, fish, meat, pizza and hamburgers, jam with butter and honey, cereals with milk, bacon and eggs, meatballs, chicken soup with dumplings, boiled potatoes with butter and parsley, pancakes, and this list could go on and on.... (now I got hungry ugh...) Nationality: Romanian :) (this should explain the “sour soup” thing)  Favourite Song Right Now: umm...*trying to make up my mind while sweating nervously* Probably still the heat of the moment, or Tiffany Blews by fob... But right now, I mean really RIGHT NOW, I think it would be “don’t stop believing” it’s so uplifting and purely...gorgeous :)

Nickname: I’ve never really had a nickname but like, way back in middle school my gurl Kat would call me Tom bcs I love Tom Delonge still to this day, and my other friend calls me “Jay” bcs we’re basically a power couple like Beyoncé and jay z Star sign: Pisces! My favorite planet is Jupiter but my ruling planet is Neptune. Both very beautiful! Height: I’m about 5'5 Favourite music artist(s): Obviously Guns N’ Roses! Back in my early teenage years I was the biggest fan of blink-182, and I’m having a bit of a musical renaissance right now so I’m into them again! I also enjoy all of blink’s side projects (box car racer, transplants, and +44) and Angels & Airwaves is definitely a favorite right now. I could always listen to 80s rock, actually 80s music in general puts me in a good mood. Lady Gaga and Katy perry are also left field fav’s of mine. I also really like Rancid and the Descendents—check out their last album, Hypercaffium Spazzinate. They’re one band that hasn’t changed their sound since their beginnings! Last TV show you watched: Does super bowl count? My sister’s a patriots fan so I’m partial to them and pardon this but…..WHAT A GAME! WHAT A WIN!!! WOW KUDOS TO TOM BRADY, WHAT A MAN!!! Anyway I chose my URL bcs ‘rocket queen’ is my favorite Guns N’ Roses song, and me + my girl Kat are avid believers in aliens and we call ourselves alien queens sooooo Hogwarts House: don’t mean to offend anyone, but I have never seen nor read anything Harry Potter, so I’m really not qualified to answer this. Pokémon team: Team Instinct, I chose that one bcs it’s represented by Zapdos and Zapdos technically has the elemental advantage against articuno and moltres…….where the real Pokémon fans at?! Favourite colour: it’s always been red, but I love all kinds of colors. Purple, orange, blue, all very beautiful colors. And black is the deep dark void of space so of course I like it. Lucky numbers: 3 (this is because through childhood and adolescence, my favorite bands excluding gnr all had three members. Blink-182, Green Day, nirvana among some of them.) How many blankets do you sleep with: California is pretty chilly at night during this time so I sleep with 3. This big fluffy one, a Peyton Manning one [(｀・ω・´)] and a Link (legend of Zelda) one that I received for Christmas! Interesting side note: I’m still scared of the dark, so even during summer months, I’ll still sleep with that big fluffy blanket. Theres AVA lyrics that talk about the moon (“dark like hell, or safe from light”) and that always gives me solace in the dark but I’m still terrified! Just a childhood fear I never outgrew haha Dream job: sports writer/reporter! If that’s not achievable by age 30, I’ll try to go back to my childhood dream of being a giraffe zookeeper at San Diego zoo. Following: 1,036 ! But I only ever see like 20 different blogs on my dash ? Followers: I’ve got 85 currently. Haha I’m not at the popular kids table am I?

I really dont know anymore how i discovered GNR and Slash, i think it must have been through Velvet Revolver. All i remember is that it was in 2004 before we got our Internet connection. So i basically relied on Magazines and MTV to get some stuff about them. I found a really nice penpal who helped me get all the old CDs and concert bootlegs.

After we had Internet, it was better. There was only MySpace (are you old enough to remember it?). Facebook was very new at that time but slowly but surely everyone left MySpace to go to Facebook. No Instagram yet, no Youtube yet, but i found this really cool, extremly detailed Fanmade Homepage about Slash, which helped me a lot getting deeper into the life and whereabouts of him. I was also a member in the GNR Forum but i didn't like it there.

And i was always a Slash Fan first and GNR Fan second. Wherever Slash went, i followed him. I was actually the happiest when he formed SMTC because it felt as if the band was meant to be together.

And Duff, while i was never an active Fan of him, always had a special place in my heart because i adored, and still adore his beautiful, cute friendship with Slash.

But i have to admit that i was not always an active Fan. I had months and years where i didn't really follow what Slash was doing, just wishing he was happy and healthy. Now i am in a more active Phase again. And glad that Meegan provides us with so many Slash pics and Videos because Slash mostly just posts shit. 😁

Yeah I didn't have internet until like 2003. For the LONGEST ass time I never had any concrete online presence, like I had MSN messenger, and like in 2007 created a profile on this super niche emo website whose name I forgot. I did have Limewire to download music and burn on CDs though! And I watched a lot of movies and shows on it was like Megafile, or something before it got shutdown, and the OG PirateBay. Mainly I just read fanfic, watched videos, and just was a nomad online. Shit I never even had LiveJournal, I read stuff on that site but never made my own profile. But I hardly ever participated in any fandom until 2008 when I created my own Tumblr and started to engage truly in social media, I had Facebook by then too.

Oh I kinda miss the old days of fan pages!

I find myself personally returning to fandoms or interests for a while then leaving, which I have joked about this in the past that I dunno when suddenly GnR, or rock bands will stop having any interest for me enough to continue making a lot of posts, or make gifs. I have a lot of phases, generally though the fandoms I continue to return to are; Star Trek, Star Wars, LOTR, Marvel (comics mainly), DC, again mainly the comics. I even briefly got intensely into some C-Dramas too which if you delve further back into this blog you can see! lol

Ah it's cool though you've been a Slash/GnR fan since forever. I am assuming you must be late 20s early 30s then? I'm 31!
