I know it's more common to hear that Solas romancers won - and after seeing how much extra content they got (additional dialogue trees with the Inquisitor and a whole alternate ending with a kiss), I can definitely see why.

But that's the thing - I've seen Solas romancers utterly split on if they liked this extra content or not. I've seen takes ranging from, "oh, I'm so glad I finally got my happy ending!" to "what the hell? This is awful!"

I've seen people heaping endless praise onto Solas' characterization. I've seen people deeply upset over Solas' characterization. I've seen people who think the Inquisitor vowing to save Solas is the most romantic thing ever. I've seen people who hate how the writing portrayed the Inquisitor as hopeless, blinded by love, and shadowed by Solas' dynamic with Mythal.

Case being... the fanbase is polarized. Some people won, but some people lost very, very bad. I've noticed the latter with those who had Inquisitors that romanced Solas, but wound up angry and vowing to stop him.

So, back to my first point. How did Dorian romancers "win"? For lack of a better term.

Well, for one, we got more content than every other romance (barring Solas'). I'm mad on behalf of the other romances, but there's no denying we made it out VERY lucky in that regard. Could it have been better? Yeah. But honestly, in comparison to Hawke talking about their romanced companion, I feel like we won. Not a huge win (Warden Alistair's dialogue about the HoF was a MASSIVE win), but a pretty good victory nonetheless.

Romance wise we got: direct, in-character interaction that alludes to Trespasser's conflict with the anchor secretly killing the Inquisitor. Sweet idle dialogue from Dorian. An immensely touching letter from Dorian that logically concludes his character arc from Inquisition (with him no longer being allergic to The L Word!). And we even got a Dorian romanced Inquisitor implying that he's up in Minrathous enough to consider himself a source of information for the Inquisition.

Generally, we got: Dorian being written in character (this is helped by him showing up as a side character and not a main one... less questionable decisions), with notable development stemming from what was planted in Inquisition (working through emotional repression, abolition and enacting societal change, etc). The option to make Dorian Archon or not, allowing for the player to decide what future they want for him. The Inquisitor wearing the Shadow Dragon casual outfit and arranging meetings in Dock Town of all places. Both of them surviving to the end of Veilguard. Both of them working and fighting together in the finale to save Minrathous and stop the gods despite the Inquisitor's duties in the south. Heavy implications that Dorian and the Inquisitor have been talking off screen about Rook and about recent events. Vague timeline that allows for several headcanons to fit - like, are they married? Engaged? Idk. How often does the Inquisitor visit? Well, often enough to consider himself a direct source of information, but with recent events, he and Dorian have been forced to use the calling crystals and write letters over the course of weeks... so really, it's up to you.

What we didn't get: Maybe a dialogue tree during Rook's conversations with the Inquisitor. Uhhh, there's one optional dialogue response if you're too formal with the Inquisitor where he calls Dorian an old friend. Which Dorian also does to the Inquisitor in Trespasser. Literally the same exact wording of "old friend". I can't be too mad over a such a funny oversight happening again. In the exact same way. But this time easily avoidable.

TL;DR - We got a lot of wins, a lack of divisive content, and a generally happy fanbase. That, and the Inquisitor and Dorian standing next to each other. Oh, the screenshots to be had. The whimsy of it all.

Not necessarily an ask but what do you think the catalyst for Rook genuinely falling in love would be

ah... now that's a complicated question because, hypothetically, I think rook could really fall in love with anyone. it would be a soulmate situation, he would just know

if I had to put together a character profile for such a person...?

I suppose the first thing is that they wouldn't be famous, or have any ambitions for fame. in simple terms, they need to be available, and they need to be his. I characterize rook as a possessive lover, the last thing he would want is to have to share their attention (or worse, affection) with others. more so, the relationship needs to be very equal for him to function, to prevent him from feeling the need to distance himself. rook would need someone he feels he can share his world with.

in terms of personality...?

patient and trusting

like I said before, rook falling in love would be a gradual process. getting him to let his guard down would be, too.

and even after that, rook is still a private person. he's faithful, god he's faithful, but he needs his alone time, and he needs his partner to able to trust that his intentions are pure. it's not that he can't offer reassurance, but someone too clingy or insecure or suspicious wouldn't thrive in a relationship with rook.

2. warm and close

they can't be too clingy, but they can't be too distant, either. figures like vil and neige are completely unavailable: practically, physically, and emotionally, in one way or another (and that's how rook prefers it). while someone who's highly organized, busy, and important would be compatible with vil, that wouldn't work for rook. he needs closeness, he needs privacy and intimacy.

(their differences are really highlighted by their prospective career paths. vil going straight back to acting and modeling while rook pursues archaeology, which is such a personal and quiet profession).

romance with rook would be slow and tender. he would want to experience every part of being in love to the fullest extent, so there's absolutely no rush with him. he's happy to take his time exploring this feeling of vulnerability for the first time.

3. curious and open-minded

rook's soulmate-soulmate is someone he feels comfortable talking to about anything that crosses his mind, someone he can be bluntly honest with, someone with a similar love for life and a passion to understand the world.

...someone who can find happiness in the smallest of things, who can see the beauty in anything, like he does. he would be enamored with such a person.

a true relationship with rook wouldn't be the "owner and dog" thing he has going on with vil (bless his heart and sorry to everyone who likes that sort of thing in a man), it would be very equal. he would take so much joy in sharing his world with them, and having them share theirs in return.

he also needs someone to infodump to. badly.

4. committed

rook's jp suitor suit card states that he's not ready to settle down yet. he hasn't found "the one". but God, when he does? good luck.

the romance is a slow and gradual process, but he's absolutely the type to want to get married (the idea of unraveling the mystery of another person throughout a lifetime is very enchanting to him) and I can imagine he'd want a family at some point. it would be a quiet life, though there's never a dull moment between the two.

so, yeah, it's a for-life situation. once he's imprinted it's over

5. (bonus)

not necessary but certainly couldn't hurt: a love for the outdoors, an interest in the natural world and/or history, a passion for the arts (especially the classics like poetry, plays, opera, etc). being able to relate to someone is a comforting feeling for him.

I can also imagine rook being more attracted to someone caring and gentle and good. rook is a good person at his core, he strives to do the right thing. considering his fondness for neige and that one groovy I have in my gallery but can't be bothered to pull, he would be so enchanted with someone who just radiates kindness.

yes, I finished it!

I have.....a lot of thoughts, but what it boils down to is that while I'd recommend the game (it's generally quite fun as a game, polished, gorgeous environments, combat that is overall fun & dynamic, & it actually made me care about Solas so that's a point in its favor) and I think it's amazing that it exists after such a long & fraught wait, it was disappointing for me in several big ways:

1. I didn't like Rook's character (someone said it feels like a JRPG in the sense that the protagonist is kind of already a defined personality meant to serve as more of an anchor to the party characters and I agree; it felt like Rook got minimal characterization & development throughout). I wish we'd gotten to play Rook's origin story and/or had way more dialogue choices. The flatness of Rook as a PC consistently made it tough for me to get engaged with this game the way I have with the other DA games.

2. Yikes @ Taash & all of the nonbinary/trans rep in the game. I wanted to love Taash so fucking much, you guys. I could not. Every aspect of Taash's character fell flat for me (except their design, that's great), especially their coming out scene with their mom (I thought Shathann was a super interesting character and I felt like the game did not want us to like her, much like DAI wants you to dislike Dorian's dad...but only one of these parents is worthy of disdain). I think the game also does an astonishingly poor job at trying to make a storyline about intersectional identity. Don't get me started on how Qunari, particularly the Antaam, are portrayed in the game...

I also played as a nb Rook and those dialogue choices all felt weird (& sometimes viscerally cringe & HUH) to me too, it only felt affirming when other characters used they/them pronouns for my Rook and bro that's the BARE MINIMUM. so I was just totally disappointed and also confused as to how this happened, given that I've really loved Trick Weekes' writing in the past.

3. There is a lack of inter-party conflict and the romance leaves a lot to be desired. I do think that especially by Act 3 this game does have some ~Dragon Age Edge~ to it (I liked a lot in Act 3, big Mass Effect vibes...at the same time tho, why does a Dragon Age game have Mass Effect vibes?? They've always felt so distinct to me in previous games; less so here). But I get why people were upset that, for example, your Rook can't be a jerk or even critique other characters (though Rook does have a lot of dialogue with what felt to me like an unintentionally condescending tone). They do try to create a confrontational dynamic between Lucanis and Davrin but that felt forced and unconvincing to me.

Because of this, because I never felt like I really knew my companions' core beliefs or flaws, and I wasn't able to argue with them or change/challenge any of their beliefs, I didn't feel very attached to many of the companions. I do think Emmrich was quite well written, and Neve is good too, but I romanced Davrin and I gotta say, the romance in this game was weirdly minimal (in my experience at least). You can't talk to your companions whenever you want. You can't give them a little kiss whenever you want. This is a core aspect of DA games for me so it was a bummer not to see it in Veilguard. There ARE a lot of cool cutscenes and interactions between the other party characters, but Rook is just a witness to those, kind of standing on the sidelines or awkwardly interrupting. Which comes back to the problem of Rook in this game! (For me, at least.)

4. This game's approach to slavery or lack thereof is a glaring issue. I could write a whole essay on this but I won't do so here. Suffice to say: I thought this was handled poorly and in a frankly cowardly way, considering that this game was so big on inclusion and social justice. I played as a Shadow Dragon elf Rook and there was ONE conversation about how "being an elf in Tevinter must be hard" (DUDE...). We do not see slavery in Tevinter except in a few codex entries (one by Dorian which...I HAVE THOUGHTS) and allusions, random NPCs here and there, and "uh oh gotta help the Dalish," etc. Fenris's absence haunts the narrative HARD. This is a big problem and I haven't seen a lot of talk about it, but especially since slavery also existed under the Evanuris, and Solas is supposedly anti-slavery, the way Veilguard consistently swerves around slavery is wild.

Idk, it just feels shitty that they devoted the resources to hiring diversity consultants to write a nonbinary character (presumably, because most of the dialogue about that reads like a DEI statement) but they did not devote time and energy and nuance to including slavery in the narrative in any meaningful way. Although maybe it's for the best that they didn't, given how not nuanced a lot of the writing in this game felt to me.

So, yeah...some things I liked about it and I do think when it comes down to it, Veilguard is a good game, but it's not a great Dragon Age game, and it's certainly not the DA4 I personally wanted :/ I am planning to try to replay it and maybe my thoughts will develop more after that, because believe me I wanna give this game all the chances.

So far my biggest complaint with datv is that rook doesn’t get treated like a main character deserves. No emotional moments, they rarely if ever get comforted, and they rarely get to express a personality outside of “Im the leader.” Even with Varric and the Inquisitor Rook gets treated like a leader first and foremost, someone forced to make all the big decisions and influence the way people’s lives go. Even in relaxed moments the decision always falls back on Rook.

Despite the fact that a Warden rook is commented on being a warden pretty often, they never get asked how they’re feeling after Weisshaupt. The game has other wardens know and recognize Rook, many dialogue lines exclusive to being a warden, but for some reason one of the big warden quests is completely devoid of Rook’s place in it. Even during Weisshaupt Rook is clearly written as a warden, comments on actively occurring events, but for some reason right after Weisshaupt the game forgets that Davrin and Rook are wardens.

Other defined aspects of Rook are also disregarded too. The game talks a lot about Neve and Lucanis not sleeping enough, but Rook doing the exact same thing (if not worse) is rarely adressed outside of Varric (there’s probably other examples, but I’m pretty sure Davrin comments on Rook finally getting some rest when they get together).

The most emotion I’ve seen rook permitted to express so far was at D’Meta’s Crossing and when they walked around a Venetori controlled Dock Town. But with those examples it still wasn’t that personal to Rookz

Granted all of the severely emotional shit Rook is going through, all after seeing their friend get stabbed in the chest, releasing blighted gods, and being forced up into a position they weren’t prepared for, would work if the game adressed that characterization of Rook. If the game tried to have the gods use Rook’s repressed or disregarded emotions to manipulate them. Or if Rook got a moment to actually have it all crashing down on them. If Rook also got to have coping mechanisms for everything alongside the companions, really anything that gave Rook more personal things outside of Leader.

Yeah there’s the symbolism with the chess piece, of being stable and powerful. But you can still show that without only having them be that. If anything it shows that more when they’re also capable of being more. The game also mildly mentions the bird in an achievement, which also would’ve been cool to expand on.

I like the game, while it’s not really what I would consider an RPG (dialogue wheel + voiced mc kill that really quick), I just wish Rook’s character got to have a place other than just the leader. Or vise versa, that the fact Rook doesn’t get to be anything other than the leader was explored and used as a chance for characterization (both with companions & Rook).

The game isn’t that bad, again I have found myself liking it a lot, it’s just glaring issues like this that upset me. I feel so upset for Rook, so empathetic? It feels weird getting upset on behalf of a character that should be permitted to cry, and maybe be suicidal, on their own.

I still haven’t finished the game, I got past beating the three blighted dragons then fucked up and now I have to restart the entire game, but this has been a smaller but important thing I’ve noticed. Normally small details like forgetting a romance comment aren’t something I’d think made the game better, but this isn’t that small of a detail. Rook got robbed of everything outside of being the leader and maybe their romance. Which sucks because Rook is a pretty decent main character being that they’re set out to be a wild-card.

I complain a lot about bg3 getting bullshit updates despite the fact it’s been out full-release for so long, because it does suck and they are bullshit, and cannot deliver the game from horribly mediocre writing (or thousands of bugs). But it does sting a little to know datv probably isn’t going to get an update that gives Rook more moments or bringing in cut content.

Thoughts on Veilguard so far, not really spoilery but still using a read more just in case:

Enjoying it so far, it feels more Mass Effect than Dragon Age, specifically Andromeda if Andromeda had more time to cook. But honestly having played both origins and inquisition lately, I don't mind it! It's just different.

The writing so far is... Fine, serviceable. It has that typical Bioware jank in places but I've yet to come across anything that's stood out to me as particularly off-putting. Despite playing for most of yesterday I'm still pretty early in the story so we'll see where it goes, but I want to see where it goes which is a good sign! And there have been moments that made me smile for sure.

I like the companions so far, the one I'm more lukewarm to is Neve so far but I get the impression she's more of a slow burn character rather than a bad one. I was worried Harding would be a bit dull and rely too much on our nostalgia but she's actually really endearing still which is nice. Bellara was the one I was most worried about initially because Bioware quirky characters tend to irritate me rather than endear me but I actually really like her and might romance her if I can resist Emmerich lmao. And the last one I've recruited so far is Lucanis who I really like and am now considering romancing in a future playthrough. He's a hot mess in a good way

I like being sassy at Solas and I like the different dad vibes I'm getting from him and particularly Varric. They didn't kill Varric immediately like I thought they would but I fully expect that he'll die later lol

I like Rook! My thoughts before launch were that if we were going to have a voiced protagonist that the ideal would be that they'd be somewhere between Hawke and the Inquisitor, which they are! More personality than the latter with more room for custom characterization than the former. Idk how much different dialogue affects how Rook acts when you aren't directly giving input but my Rook so far has been sweet and a bit silly, which is what I was going for anyway. Also the scene with the mementos was nice and it was cool to not only establish a character as trans but also you could choose how they feel about it currently. I've yet to see it come up since but I have no doubt it will.

Gameplay wise it's a bit repetitive but honestly so are all dragon age games so it's fine, the loop is satisfying, it works. I've had fun. Though I've quickly realized with my play style that I should have picked rogue like I originally intended because I suck at blocking 😭

Also it's probably because my graphics card is ancient but I have had performance issues + stuttering. It's not constant but it's noticeable and gets particularly bad in Arlathan specifically for some reason. That said someone pointed out that if you have an older graphics card you should turn off upscaling so I'm gonna do that and see how that goes!

But yeah overall it's been fun and I look forward to playing more of it!

Yandere question anon here. I completely agree on Rook and Malleus being on the list and Jade and Floyd aren’t too surprising. But I’ll be honest, you picking Jamil completely caught me off guard. That’s just not a character I immediately think of when looking at who would be most likely to have “yandere” tendencies.

But in the end, like you said, all of the boys are easy to twist into a yandere archetype. Though do you have any personal favorites? A specific depiction of a character or theme to a fic?

Haha maybe that’s just my bias that slipped in then because I’ve started to like Jamil a lot and read some great yandere characterizations of him. I do think that Jamil tends to slip under the radar though for how unhinged he can be, both in book 4 and events (as he should tho, I would be like that too after what he’s been through).

I’ve written a bit about this before, but (imo) Jamil has a lot of other priorities that occupy his mental/emotional energy than seeking out or just getting into a relationship. So IF he does, I expect it would have to be something that really gets his attention, enough that he’s willing to forgo his general misgivings about people and the world, and actual put effort into maintaining the relationship (taking away from his own personal time and agenda).

Also, I think there’s something to be said about how his forced submission and subservience to Kalim’s family has affected his thoughts on relationship dynamics. Jamil never wants to be at the mercy of anyone’s whims again. How can he avoid this? Complete control and dominance in any relationship he’s in. Jamil wants to be the one deciding things, the one who gets to have power for once. That’s sort of why I see him as potentially falling to a ‘yandere’ type, not obsessive in a delusional or romanticizing his darling way, but in a ‘I deserve something good after everything I’ve suffered way.’

As for depictions I like (pls no one judge me💀, this is just fictional), I pretty much enjoy almost every trope. I have a big interest in reading yandere fics, because I just find it very fascinating to combine genres like horror and romance (or even horror and comedy).

This is probably already obvious because he’s the main character I write, but I really like any multitude of yandere Malleus depictions. Protective Malleus? Possessive Malleus? Jealous Malleus? Insane Malleus? Delusional Malleus? Mean Malleus? All of them are great.

I tend to enjoy mean yanderes in general, and considering nrc is a villain school, I think a few of them fit in well in this trope because of their innate personalities. Leona is another one of my favs, and he definitely isn’t the type to be forwardly all sappy and cute even with someone he likes, so I tend to feel his meaner depictions are more canon and just more interesting. ‘Yeah he likes you, is obsessed with you even, but you’re never going to know it’ type thing.

In denial yanderes are also great, I like the dichotomy of being entirely obsessed with someone but also your own brain not being willing to process that obsession for what it is, instead blaming it on something like hatred and resentment. The mix of feelings of love and lust and hate and guilt are really interesting to me. As for twst boys, Rollo definitely comes to mind for this trope, or even maybe Sebek?

I also really like more manipulative yanderes who seem very innocuous at first. The type to be your friend, to cry and guilt-trip you into staying with them over going on a date with someone else, who always clings to your side. I think this works well with characters like Epel or even Azul.

I just realized I never shared how Melisande turned out in Veilguard:

Overall I was pretty happy with how she turned out! She was always meant to have dark brown eyes, but I remember that being impossible to achieve in the vanilla DAI CC. Her jawline and cheeks in DATV are also closer to how I envisioned her.

I didn't get any body shots in the CC, but I also liked that I was finally able to give her the muscular bod she was always meant to have. The DAI bodies are so spindly--It never looked right to me on her.

But I couldn't get the mouth anywhere near her DAI shape, which I think is one of her most defining features, and I do wish that she had scars a little closer to her DAI version, namely the ones on her lip for the same reason. I wish there were more damage scars in DATV in general--There are a lot of cool body mod/art options, but I felt like the injury ones were lacking.

I also wish that wrinkles weren't tied to complexion, because this was the best complexion for her, but she does look too young. I think if I remember my own timeline right, she'd be in her mid-40s, so some crows' feet and laugh lines would have been nice.

I always loved Alix Wilton Regan's voice for Melisande, so hearing her speak again was very nostalgic for me. <33 I do feel like the characterization of the Inquisitor missed the mark for me, though. It wasn't terrible, but Melisande is a lot more stern and no-nonsense than she came across in Veilguard.

There was one part when she told Rook she missed the companionship in the Inquisition, and I was like hmmmm. I don't know if she does, lmao. She'd miss Cassandra a lot, since they were besties and Mel made her the Divine, so they presumably don't get to see each other that often. She'd probably miss Josie and Varric, too, if they didn't stay in touch--And I think if she knew Varric was hunting Solas, she would have wanted to be a lot more involved.

I was also dying to see how her romance, Cullen, would be handled. He was obviously not going to appear in-game given his knucklehead of a VA burned those bridges, but I was surprised he wasn't mentioned by name at all. At least not in any of the conversations I had with her. And I was a little bummed by that if only because I just love how Regan says his name, haha. Just something like "I need to return to Cullen in Ferelden" would have been nice.

The only thing that indicated she was in a relationship was Dorian's vague line at the very end about "a certain someone worrying about her." That was a little underwhelming for my sappy ass, but whatever. It's fine.

I think I was a minority in this, but I personally never really wanted the Inquisitor to come back, especially not as a protagonist. I was content with the "My adventuring days are over" (or whatever) line at the end of Trespasser to indicate that she was passing the torch to someone else, as per Dragon Age protagonist tradition. I was also very dissatisfied with how Hawke's cameo in Inquisition played out, so generally I'm of the opinion that BioWare should leave my retired protagonists alone, lmao. But despite some characterization gripes, it was fun to see her again, especially from another perspective.

A Short, Non-Spoilery Review of Dragon Age: The Veilguard

I want to keep this to-the-point, so here we go!

The biggest question I ask myself of any game I play, and the most important one is: Did I have fun playing this? Yes, I did have a lot of fun playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard! The point of a video game is to be fun and Veilguard is a fun game - the missions draw you in, the maps are super fun to explore, the characters have wonderful (if not enough) moments.

My favorite aspects: For me personally, the maps and overall world of this game are the best of the series. They took the best from the three previous games and really made interesting, dynamic, full maps that are just so fun to explore. Exploration was my favorite part of this game. The missions themselves were fun and mostly not repetitive (there were a couple but the vast majority were unique). The story itself was very good - I liked it. I liked seeing the different parts come together, particularly with the companions, at the end. I liked some of the reveals that come at the end. Honestly, the last 3 hours of this game will just...bowl you over. The writers did a great job considering how much they had to account for and with the development hell they went through.

Mid aspects: Unpopular opinion but the combat system was not for me. Real-time combat, for me, works in more sci-fi settings. I like turn-based combat for fantasy, so my actual DA combat preference is Origins, believe it or not. That said, combat can be SUPER fun in this game, and the fighting dynamics can be super cool (I love the dagger and orb for mages, or the running attack with a staff). I have only played with a mage, so my opinion may change when I play other classes (I hear warrior is fun!). I am also putting the weapon and armor system here simply because I miss crafting. I like crafting in Inquisition, that was fun, but I also know that not everyone likes crafting. There is a simpler upgrade system here which is fine, but nothing for me to get excited about. The CC...y'all this is petty but the CC is only here because I can't give my character boobs. Boobs max at most a b-cup. That makes me sad. I don't like that.

Disappointing Aspects: I cannot believe I am saying this for a Bioware game but...the dialogue was a bit of a disappointment for me overall. Largely when it came to talking to companions. I felt like there just wasn't enough content to connect with companions - I couldn't just initiate conversations like in DAI. You have to wait until a conversation unlocks. But I wanted so badly to talk to Neve about interesting cases, or ask her about why decided to be a detective as a mage in Docktown - why not pursue politics? I wanted to talk to Bellara about escapades in Arlathan forest, or talk to Lucanis about his recovery or even interesting contracts! In general, I wanted to talk to my companions more and that really wasn't an option. Further, because of that...I think the romance content really suffered in this game. I do not think there is enough romance content for any of the characters, largely because you don't have these "get to know you" conversations. I love the companions, I just...want to know more. I also think Rook's characterization suffered because of this too! I couldn't develop my character's backstory or opinions or attitude within these more casual conversations like I could in Inquisition. I would also put characterization of Lavellan who romanced Solas as a disappointment, as well as sanitized lore - but those are more spoilery aspects.

So overall? It is a good game. It's fun. It's not perfect, but that's okay. I want to hope that we get some extra content but I don't think we will. I think it says a lot that my biggest disappointment of this game is "I didn't have ENOUGH of this".

In one of your replies, you mentioned that you got the "off camera" tip from reading Roger Zelazny and I was wondering if you meant like his books or like if he did an interview or something? Also, I was wondering if you have any stories/books you think of when you think of a great plot/great characterizations?

I don’t mind at all.  But what works for me doesn’t work for everyone else.  So in the 1987 edition of Unicorn Variations, Zelazny has a short essay called “The Parts That Are Only Glimpsed: Three Reflexes.”  (The only reason I mention the year is because his short story collections have been released numerous times and there are different editions with completely different contents. Off the top of my head “The Last Defender of Camelot” is one of them.)  Basically he writes a story or composes one in his head, but then destroys it/never writes it, but it is a part of the character’s back story and he’ll reference it, because the things you don’t see can be more powerful than things you do see.  I read that as a teenager and it stuck with me.  I’m too…hoarder to destroy my writing, even the bad stuff, and sometimes I’ll write that story and it’ll be worth polishing into its own arc, and sometimes it’s like “well, that happened, but I’m not happy with how I wrote it/it’s not that compelling as a stand alone piece.”  

Also, I love Zelazny, but he wrote the same character over and over again.  :P

Plot is my weakest trait.  I’ve been working really hard to make sure the storyline carries itself and doesn’t collapse and that’s another discussion in and of itself.  I really enjoyed Daniel O’Malley’s The Rook and the sequel Stiletto for the sheer “How the hell did we get here? This is fun.”  The characterization are OK, no one’s amazingly deep, but it’s always interesting and that’s what carries the books.  Rhys Ford reads like a goddamn K-drama in the best way.  She mostly writes murder mystery/romances, but I love her urban fantasy (Dim Sum Asylum and Kai Gracen are my favs) and I will admit, I’m not a huge m/m genre fan. I like them, but I don’t go out of my way to seek them out. 

Dissecting spy thrillers, like John LeCarre or clever mysteries (most anything by Agatha Christie) is how I’ve started to get a handle on plot.  

Characterization is a bit different.  I think that is one my stronger points. I really enjoy Jonathan Howard’s Johannes Cabal series, though it’s the clever writing that really carries the series.  I like Ilona Andrews’ books, though her main characters are almost all the same archetype (I still really enjoy them).  Dia Reeves did some great YA characters - a mentally ill black Finnish American girl whose dead father keeps trying to get her to kill herself, has moved to a town of monsters, trying to win the love of her very damaged mother (Bleeding Violet) and the bloodthirsty daughter of a serial killer who is trying very hard not to grow up and is starting to resent her sister for wanting just the opposite(Slice of Cherry is set in the same town as Bleeding Violet.) If you’re looking at sci-fi, I really liked Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga and Penric tales.  The Vorkosigans might be a little dated, since she’s been writing for decades, but the Cordelia stories are some of the most satisfying.  

I’d give a shout out to style too.  Richard Kadrey’s first two Sandman Slim books are great.  He drags when it gets to metaphysics, but his violent thug character has a way with words.  I love Yoon Ha Lee’s voice, it’s very poetic.  

Kids books also have a lot of good characterization.  (I used to run the kids department at the bookstore, so I know way too much about children’s books.)  Counting by Sevens, Wonder, and The Girl Who Drank the Moon all demonstrate that you can write a G/PG rated story and still be hardhitting/real. 

I like writing prompts. And before I started IAL I spent like two months making myself do the ones in The 3AM Epiphany.  I’ve gone chronologically into the 40s and intend to continue.  Not every exercise in the book produces something I’ve liked or can use, however that isn’t always the point.  There was one that had to be told from first person, but only using first person pronouns twice.  I wrote a piece, I’ll never use that exact piece, but it made me think about how I write and I have a few projects going, so most of the time I kept using existing worlds as settings so it both let me expand my world building/plotting and try new writing techniques.  And I didn’t follow them religiously (some of them wanted nonfiction and I didn’t feel like it).  But writing one or two a day, sometimes doing multiple versions of the ones I liked was a fun way to build up the writing habit.  (Not everyone likes prompts, but they often work for me.)
