Ok I'm not done done ranting about isekais but last thing (for now sjsjsksk) because boy do I have a BONE to pick
I get that isekais are all about fantasy escapism and so often fall into the 'everything is kind of paved already' for the protagonist trope, for example, having an absurd mana capacity, getting a 'cheat' or a key skill that gives them an unprecedented advantage to the world's usual residents etc etc basically a get out of jail card for almost every situation they end up in.
And on one hand I get it, it's nice to get lost in a perfect fantasy where everything goes well despite trials and tribulations BUT
I think there's a real missed opportunity in the isekai genre overall. What about the protagonists reincarnated in some truly atrocious conditions? How do they fight to overcome their circumstances? Like genuinely by their own wit, ingenuity and resiliance- where are those stories?
I want a protagonist who isn't favoured by fate or the author in an obvious sense. I want a protagonist that has to suffer and make mistakes to learn about what is essentially a completely foreign world to them. I don't want them to be hand held because what is the actual likelihood of there being someone who would guide them or a perfectly constructed upbringing that just hands everything they need on a silver platter with no input or real directed decisions from the protagonist.
No I want a protagonist that has to fight for this information, make active decisions to learn and overcome the disparity in their understanding of how things work in their new world. I want a grueling story about hard work, growth and the resiliance to forge their own path despite the adversity and setbacks.
Maybe I just haven't encountered the right stories yet but I hope that more than just one or two of these exist because it's such an oversaturated genre but an underestimated one imo. There is good potential writing with this medium but I'm just too tired of seeing the same pitfalls over and over again :(

Circular thinker Ellen MacArthur: 'Simply consuming less is not a goal'
Tumblr media
Ellen Mac Arthur Foundation: our timeline
As a child, she saved her lunch money to buy her first boat. At the age of 28 she became the fastest solo sailor around the world. Today, Ellen MacArthur is one of the most influential voices for a new, greener industry. 'Why would we make packaging that we throw away after one use? As humanity we can do better.'
Ellen MacArthur (47) became world famous overnight in 2005, when she sailed solo around the world in just 71 days, breaking the world record. “I didn't write much in my diaries during that trip,” she says. “But I remember clearly at one point writing down, 'This is all I have.'” If you run out of diesel or food, you can't just stop somewhere in the middle of the ocean and buy extra. With that idea in mind I went back on land. I realized: 'This is not just about sailing, but about our entire economy.' We have the raw materials we dispose of, and we have to do it with those.
That insight would determine her future life. 'I never thought I would stop sailing professionally. But I realised that I could use my fame to do something with it.' That 'something' became the Ellen MacArthur Foundation[1], an influential non-governmental organization (NGO) that wants to get rid of our throw-away economy and, together with companies, scientists and policy makers seeks for a better use of our raw materials.
The determination with which the British dogged herself in this is the same as that which took her to sea at the time. She grew up in rural Derbyshire[2], England. 'We grew our own vegetables. My favourite thing to do was to walk with the dog in the fields, hills and forests. There was no sea to be seen for miles.” But when her aunt Thea took her on a sailboat as a 4-year-old, she was sold. “It was a small boat, but I felt like it could take me anywhere. That was the greatest feeling of freedom I could imagine. All the doors suddenly opened at the same time.”
She saved the money she got for her school lunch to buy her first sailboat. Whenever she could, she  went to sea. When she was told at the age of 17 that she was 'not smart enough' to study as a vet - even though she had prepared for it for three years by working at a local vet on Saturdays - her choice was made. “I would go sailing. I have no idea how I was going to do that, but that was the objective.”
Her foundation has now grown to a team of 200 people and she sits at the table with the CEOs of multinationals such as Gucci, Amazon, Philips and Morgan Stanley and at the highest political levels. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation advises policy, informs the general public through podcasts, and works closely with the various industries. She is working on better battery technology with the chemical company Solvay, the utility company Veolia and the car manufacturer Renault. In the project The Jeans Redesign[3], she is working with more than a hundred brands, spinning mills and producers to find out what sustainable jeans trousers should look like.[4]
“The idea to create that organisation was not there from the beginning,” MacArthur says. “I first thought: 'Maybe I can wake people up by sailing around the world with a large message on my sail.’ But what message should that be? I had to look for that first.”
How do you mean?
Tumblr media
Ellen MacArthur
Ellen MacArthur: “I'm a sailor, not an economist. At first I didn't even understand what problem I had to find a solution for. I just felt intuitively that nothing was right.”
“After my trip around the world, I went to the south of the Atlantic Ocean in the winter of 2005 for a documentary about albatrosses. I stayed on an island on which there was a former whaling station. Thousands of people used to work there. An entire city had been built around it, with a church, refectories, dormitories and doctors' offices. Now it is completely deserted. They took 175,000 whales out of the sea, but then they ran out of whales.”
“Are we doing the right thing?” I wondered. “When one resource is used up, do we simply switch to another? How many times can we do that?'
Where did you find the answer?
MacArthur: 'Not by sitting and thinking on my own. I started visiting factories and power plants and talking to economists, environmental experts and CEOs. One day I was sitting with the big boss of Castorama. The French DIY chain was part of the Kingfisher group that had sponsored me for years. It soon became about doing more with less: using fewer raw materials to make products.'
'It struck me that everywhere I went, 'less of everything' was the strategy towards sustainability. Let's just use fewer resources, travel less, buy less. But how can that be an objective? Where does that end? What are we going to use to make cars then? Or is it our intention to sell as few cars as possible? That's not realistic. “Always less” is not a goal. That's the problem with sustainability: we don't know where we want to get. In a meeting it was said: we need sustainable products. But no one could give an answer to what such a sustainable product could look like.'
'Then I saw a drawing in a book. There was a straight line and a circle drawn underneath it. “That's it,” I thought. Since the industrial revolution we have been in a linear logic. We use up raw materials and fossil fuels, waste piles up, we cause pollution and climate change. On the other hand, there is a circular economy. This is how life on Earth has worked for billions of years. There is no waste in a forest, everything regenerates. This is what our economy could also look like.'
'As humanity we are so inventive. Why on earth would we make packaging that we throw away after one use and that we can't use anymore? We can do better, right? From the design stage we should say: 'We are making something that will then be reused. That's just common sense."
To promote that idea of a circular economy, you launched the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2010. Where did you start?
MacArthur: “     We first identified with the consultant McKinsey what could we possibly gain by a different approach. The numbers were staggering. For the entire European economy, we arrived at an amount of 630 billion dollars if we make better use and reuse of our raw materials. We looked at what could be done differently, for example in vans, washing machines, smartphones or the use of cotton. In 2012 we presented that report at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Naturally, many raised eyebrows. But six months later we did speak in the European Parliament, and we spoke to top industry figures. That has put a lot in motion.”
What exactly can be done differently with washing machines?
MacArthur: 'Today this is the model: the manufacturer buys raw materials, makes a washing machine and sells it. He only starts to make money if he also can sell the next machine. In other words, he benefits from the machine breaking down. What do we see then? A cheaper machine will not last as long. The costs per wash are therefore almost one and a half times higher than with a more expensive appliance.'
'Shouldn't we strive to keep the costs per wash as low as possible for everyone? Perhaps we should evolve towards a model where the manufacturer benefits from the machine lasting as long as possible and being maintained as well as possible? Perhaps the machine remains the property of the manufacturer and he can reuse the materials if the machine breaks down? You simply have to rethink the entire mechanism.”
There must be time and space for that. For an SME that is busy managing everything that comes in its way every day - the pandemic, the energy crisis, geopolitical tensions, inflation - reinventing the entire business model is not an option.
MacArthur: 'When I hear that, I always think of the climate summit in Glasgow two years ago. I sat on a stage with Emmanuel Faber, the former CEO of Danone, and Philipp Hildebrand, the number two of BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. An American moderator said: 'I understand the circular thing, but it is about a complex transition that will cost money.' Hildebrand turned to him and said: 'If we do nothing about the climate problem, our prosperity will decline by a quarter. So it's not a matter of what it will cost. Business as usual just doesn't work anymore."
'That's what it's all about for me. If you don't have time to think about it, you will soon cease to exist. Sustainability is not something you put in a separate report. As a farmer, why wouldn't you strive to grow your crops in such a way that the soil becomes richer, not poorer? Why not get to the point where driving a car does not harm the environment? How a company operates should contribute to solving our biggest global problems.'
What role can a circular economy play in our green ambitions?
MacArthur: 'If we want to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, 55 percent of the effort must come from the energy transition. This is about renewable energy and reducing CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels. But 45 percent will have to come from how we make things different: from food to clothing. This is about our manufacturing industry, but also about our agriculture. That makes it hyper-relevant.'
Do you see yourself as a climate activist?
MacArthur: “No. I just went on a personal journey. Our world population is growing. Our raw materials are finite. That is not sustainable. I want to spread that message. That doesn't make me an activist, I'm a realist.'
How pragmatic are you in this regard? The clothing sector faces enormous challenges. A company like Primark, which is criticised everywhere for the way it does business, is a member of your community. This way it can polish its image very easily.
MacArthur: 'Look, we work in an economic reality. I think there are good arguments for talking to everyone, not just those who are already doing well. We have also done the same with plastic. From conversations with many top people from that industry, it turned out that no one had an overview of the entire chain of plastic packaging. This is not different in the clothing sector. Everyone just produces. But what does that mean on a global scale? It is never about one company alone.'
'We spent a year researching plastic packaging, a business worth hundreds of billions. We presented the results in 2017. The numbers were dramatic. Barely 2 percent of all packaging that came onto the market was recycled into an equivalent material. However, we all feel that we have become very good at recycling.'
'With those results we were able to bring competitors and policy makers to the table. Where should we get? Ultimately, 20 percent of companies signed a commitment in 2019 to set ambitious goals for 2025.'
The ambitious goals to reduce single-use plastic are now proving unattainable. You admitted that too. What is more: in some areas we have even gone backwards.
MacArthur: “Yes. We see that the companies that have endorsed the objectives are doing significantly better than their sector peers in tackling plastic waste. It does make a difference.'
'But to get the entire industry on the right track, an international approach is needed. This is currently being negotiated, and that is necessary. Small flexible plastic packaging is a disaster. The problem is only getting bigger. They are not collected or recycled, especially in emerging countries where there are no collection systems. One company that puts a lot of money and energy into innovation is not going to change that. It is a system error. You have to set that straight.”
Where is that starting point?
MacArthur: 'By realising that everything is connected. When you sail around the world on a boat, you also have to take several systems into account at the same time. You are a system yourself. You have to stay alive. That's easier said than done. You are not hungry, and yet you have to eat. You need to get enough sleep. Then there is the boat, which is also a system in itself. You have sails, electronics. If the batteries are not charged, the autopilot will not work and you will be upside down 20 seconds later. Sometimes I slept next to the wheel. And then there is the third system: the weather. You keep an eye on this via satellite images. You try to predict the wind, because that determines how fast you go.'
'That connection also applies to our economy. It is a large system that embraces the world, but at the same time it concerns each individual. It concerns every sector. That's a difficult balance. On the one hand, you have to zoom deep enough into the practical details of a problem, such as setting up a collection system for a specific plastic. On the other hand, you have to see the big picture.
Can't an agricultural waste stream be converted into a better type of plastic, for example?'
'You cannot solve any problem alone. That requires a different mindset than what we learned at school. We have not learned to think circularly.'
The consumer must also be on board. As long as he buys clothes from Primark and throws them away after wearing them twice, we won't get there.
MacArthur: 'The general public is needed to set the system in motion. People can certainly force companies to change through social media. But that is also not a solution. After my sailing career I changed my life. I started traveling less and I built a house that requires hardly any energy. But to be fair, I also had the means for that. Not everyone can say that. And even if everyone could do it, it wouldn't solve everything, precisely because the entire system needs to change. But it is true that the buy-in from the general public is needed. And it is true that many people are not yet on board today.'
So you hear politicians in Europe say that we should tone down our green ambitions. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak scaled back the targets.
MacArthur: 'That brings me back to Glasgow. Business as usual no longer works. We'll have to jump eventually. The question is simply: how long do you cling to your old ideas and when do you dare to jump? There are already opportunities. There are start-ups that focus on reselling or repairing clothing that is now worth billions.'
'What is particularly unfortunate about the political turn is that companies have already invested to achieve those objectives. They bang on the table and say: 'We need policies to be ambitious. There must be a level playing field.' Rightly so. That's the surprising thing about the criticism on Sunak. In the past, companies wanted to leave everything the same, but now they want to move forward more and more.'
You are a realist, you say. Are you also an optimist? Can we move fast enough to make the change in time?
MacArthur: 'I am convinced that it is possible. Whether it can be done quickly enough is another matter. Although we should not underestimate ourselves. During the pandemic, companies have accomplished in four weeks what would otherwise take four years. Covid was terrible, but as humans we have shown what transformation we are capable of.'
'My great-grandfather was a miner. He died when I was eleven, so I remember him well. He was born in 1894, when barely a handful of cars were on the streets. Everyone still moved by horse and carriage. When he was 45, the first computer was built. Twenty years later there was the microchip. When he died, the Internet had just been invented. And now we have artificial intelligence. If we really put our minds to it, things can happen quickly. We just have to determine what we are going for.'
Profile
Ellen MacArthur (47) grew up with two brothers in a small hamlet in England. Her parents were both teachers.
MacArthur became known as a professional sailor. In 2001, as a 24-year-old, she came second in the Vendée Globe, a tough competition in which sailors sail solo non-stop around the world. In 2005 she broke the record: she sailed solo around the world in just 71 days. Her achievements earned her the title Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE), the female equivalent of a knighthood.
In 2010, she launched the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a foundation that promotes the circular economy to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution. She wrote several books, including the autobiography 'Taking on the World' (2002), 'Race Against Time' (2005) and the second autobiography 'Full Circle' (2010).
She is the founder and CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, an organisation that inspires young people recovering from cancer through sailing.
How a company operates should contribute to solving our biggest global problems.

Hypothesis testing
I actually really enjoyed writing these prompts so I'm doing more :D
This is part two to this post here but can be read separately.
If you said her name three times, would Grimora appear?
> After the third utterance of her name, the scrybe of the dead walked into the room, she claimed she was there for a 'scheduled scrybe meeting' and that she is 'entertained' by the thought of appearing whenever somebody uttered her name.
A likely story... more testing recommended.
Does Grimora need to be invited in before she can enter a room?
> Inconclusive. Inexplicably whenever conditions are met SOMEONE is always there to welcome her in instead. They seem to do it automatically and without realising until too late. (even I did it automatically, knowing the test conditions and everything, it seemed like the polite thing to do...)
What would happen if Leshy consumed chocolate? Would his body react similarly to an ordinary beast?
> Test rejected. Got yelled at. Mora and P also wanted to see what would happen for their own reasons but now we're all disappointed.
When destroyed outside of gameplay, do cards remain destroyed?
> Unfortunately not. Seems the nature of inscription only allows cards to be destroyed and restored in gameplay. Neat to know!
If a SENTIENT card was DUPLICATED, would the DUPLICATE also be SENTIENT?
> Rejected, not going to even consider this. The moral implications of conducting testing on sentient cards, let alone cloned ones, are not pleasant. How did this end up on the hypothesis list???
Does time flow differently in the 'exam rooms' of Magnificus' tower?
> Time seems to be 1:1 between rooms (realms? Dimensions? Ask Mags later). Unclear if there would be time dilation with further time spent in the room. Students will not be questioned for the sake of each's mental health.
WHAT DOES OLD_DATA TASTE LIKE?
> Rejected. We'd have to wait until it resurfaces again and even then there's a strict 'no touching the OLD_DATA' policy in place. (Who even added these hypothesises? Hypothesi? Hypotheese?)
What is the plural of hypothesis?
> Hypotheses! (Thank u G0lly 💚)
CAN INDIVIDUALS OTHER THAN THE SCRYBES HARNESS THE OLD_DATA?
> Rejected. See previous OLD_DATA prompt.
(NOT funny, whoever is sending in these prompts STOP, they're getting boring to reject)
Do the scrybes change the solutions for their puzzles?
Depends on what each puzzle is protecting and what type of puzzle it is, randomly generated captchas are easier to change then a wooden clock puzzle so it makes sense. (Ignore that I brute forced the card puzzles... never happened).
Can any of the bots correctly answer a captcha test correctly?
> Contrary to popular belief bots are fairly good at recognising images thanks to deep-learning tech, however seeing as the bots of inscryption are not the same as bots commonly found on the internet instead it's a matter of each individual bot's skill level with bots specialising in seeking imperfections having a higher success rate than say a bot specialised in leaping.
(note: Most bots' results omitted for brevity however most performed on a similar level to their organic counterparts, only being slightly slower but overall more accurate)
As for the Uberbots; Both the archivist and photographer tied for first place with the 'unfinished boss' placing second. (P03 tied for third place but only because he got veryyy cocky and accidentally pressed an additional square while showing off. Would have achieved a perfect score and the fastest time if not for that lapse in judgement).
G0lly also tied for third place due to time loss after initially admiring the images when first presented them however she quickly fell into a steady rhythm after and caught up, scoring perfectly. (also would have had the fastest time if not for slip up at beginning).
(note: All Uberbots performed far quicker than the 'organic control group.' Terrifying)

Sirius Black x reader x Remus Lupin
Request:  so for the poly relationship. maybe like the reader is from another house and both remus and sirius like her but they also like each other (they only show their crush for the reader). James has already realised this and sets the three of them up on a blind date. after the date one of the boys is reluctant and avoids them for a while. you can decide how it ends, thank you! 💕🌠 (anon)
Words: 4.2k
Warnings: not really a warning, but it’s a poly relationship
A/N: So this was something completely new to me and I actually really enjoyed writing it. I mean I am a big wolfstar shipper and I love both Sirius and Remus, so this wasa story to my heart.
-----------
‘You’re staring again,’ your best friend, Amy, told you over breakfast as your eyes were focused on a group of boys at the Gryffindor table.
‘No, I’m not,’ you said, tearing away your gaze from two heads in particular. You turned your head to your friend and tried to eat your toast like there was nothing going on.
Which was a lie. If anyone had paid attention to you, they would have noticed that lately you had gotten slightly obsessed with staring. And not just staring in general, no, staring at two particular boys. Remus Lupin and Sirius Black.
Now was this not the most crazy thing; many girls and guys in school felt at least something for either of them. There was no denying that both the boys were attractive in their own way. But fate had brought it that you liked both. There was not a single fibre in your body that liked the one more than the other. And the warm feeling that you felt for both of them was eating you up inside.
‘Don’t lie to me, y/n,’ Amy said. ‘Have you figured out for which one you are going?’
‘I just wish there was a way to date both,’ you sighed and you rested your head on your arms.
‘Some people do that, you know?’ said Amy as she reached over the table for the teapot. ‘Dating more people at the same time.’
‘You mean as in cheating?’ you asked, looking up to her.
‘No, sweets,’ your friend said smiling, while she poured herself a cup of tea. ‘As in polyamory.’
‘Polyamory?’ you repeated, with a confused look on your face.
Amy took a sip of her tea and nodded. ‘Yes, friends of my parents are involved in such a thing,’ she said and you sat up straight, as if asking her to continue. ‘They are married to each other, but they are also involved with another married couple. It’s quite interesting.’
‘It is,’ you mumbled as you turned back to your breakfast. It was something to think about. But then, even if you would want it, there would be no way that either Remus or Sirius would agree with you. They didn’t even know you liked them now. You were sure they didn’t like you back, you were just their friend. And they didn’t like each other, though that was a debatable subject.
‘You should think about it,’ Amy interrupted your thoughts. ‘I have said it before; it is obvious they like you. And I do think they like each other,’ she added as she glanced over at the Gryffindor table where Remus and Sirius were sitting next to each other, a little too close for ‘just friends’.
‘I will think about it,’ you said sincere; Amy had awakened a possibility that you never had known there was. The idea of dating them both not only seemed like the easiest option, but also interested you greatly. As you ate the rests of your breakfast you let your mind wonder to the possibilities.
- -- -
The common room was close to empty as James sat at the fire, his head buried in the only book he ever read; Quidditch through the ages. He had read it so often that he could basically recite every line of it, but he still read it. It brought a sense of calm and silence over him that was almost never there. Not that he would ever admit it to anyone, but he did enjoy the reading.
It had stopped raining just fifteen minutes ago and the sky was dark as the sun had set. The little drops of water streamed down the window panes, a game of which one would come to the bottom the fastest. The bright stars were hidden by thick dark grey clouds and although it had stopped raining, it felt like it would start any moment again.
Sirius and Peter had detention and were bound to come back any moment now, James figured. Remus was out studying with you at the library, taking advantage of every second before curfew set to read the small letters in those old, dusty books. Remus had offered for James to come along, but just the thought of the dark library gave James chills and he declined. Besides, Remus had never really wanted James to come; he way rather just want to spend time with you alone.
It was obvious to James that Remus had a crush on you. It was obvious to anyone but Remus. And Sirius. Because Sirius was too busy with his crush on you to realise that his friend was in the exact same place. Both the boys were longing after you and neither of them seemed to realise the competition they had put themselves into.
Just as neither of them had realised that they liked each other.
James thought it was impossible to look past the glances that they gave each other when the other wasn’t looking. Or to see the way Sirius always ended up next to Remus at dinner. Remus always helped Sirius with his homework, no matter how often he told him that he wouldn’t. Sirius bought Remus chocolate, Remus read to Sirius. They always wound up next to each other on the couch in the common room, sometimes tangled up, sometimes just staring at each other.
Though the innocence of his friends made James smile, he also knew that it was about time they realised what they felt for each other. And for you.
The portrait hole opened and Sirius and Peter stepped through it. Both looked annoyed, but where Peter went straight upstairs, Sirius sat down next to his best friend and told him about the detention Flitwick had given him. James listened to his friend, pretending to listen, but his mind somewhere else. He had put his book on the table and stared at Sirius and his tired face.
And as Sirius went into the depths of the corners of the Charms classroom that he had to clean, James nodded. His friend got worked up over the cobwebs on the ceiling and the gum under the tables.
‘Terrible mate,’ James said when he realised Sirius was expecting a reaction from him once he was finished.
‘Where’s Moony?’ Sirius asked, apparently satisfied with James’ reaction.
‘Library,’ James answered and turned to his friend. ‘With y/n.’
James watched as Sirius’ expression changed. From lazy and unbothered to alert and a little disappointed. James chuckled and went to grab his book again, waiting for Sirius to start talking. Something he definitely would.
After a few minutes of silence, Sirius opened his mouth and James looked up from the page. ‘Do you- don’t you think Moony and y/n are spending a lot of time together lately?’
‘I don’t know,’ James answered, smirking at his friend’s face, his eyes back on his book as if he hadn’t been looking up at all. ‘I haven’t really been paying attention to that.’
Sirius turned red and stared at the fireplace. ‘Me neither,’ he mumbled. ‘I just thought of it.’
James sighed and lowered his book. He closed it with a bang and turned to Sirius. It was clear that this one wouldn’t bring up the subject himself any time soon.
‘You like her, don’t you Pads?’
Sirius’ eyebrows raised on his forehead but he said nothing to prove James wrong. That, however, was enough of an answer for James and he laughed out loud, making a few students look his way.
‘I thought so,’ James whispered, not wanting everybody to know Sirius’ secret, that was not that big a secret since everyone had already noticed. ‘I think she likes you too, mate. Maybe you should do something about it.’
‘I don’t know, she kind of seems to like Remus,’ Sirius replied unsure.
There James was stuck with an answer, because Sirius was right. Though James was convinced that you liked Sirius, he also thought you liked Remus. And to James it was not clear which one you liked better.
Sirius liked you, you liked Sirius and Remus and Remus liked you too. It was a triangle, one similar to any teenage fictional love-triangle, but just with a twist. Because Sirius liked Remus and Remus liked Sirius.
All together it was confusing James, but he did had the feeling that there must be an solution. What that was he didn’t know, however.
‘But you like y/n?’ James said and Sirius nodded. ‘And you like Remus.’
Sirius’ eyes widened and he turned his head away from the fire to James. On his cheeks was a blush and when James smirked, Sirius averted his eyes and stared at his hands. In any other situation James would have made fun of his friend, suddenly lost for words and blushing, but James knew that this was a delicate issue and not one to be messed with. The teasing would come later.
Before James could say anything to reassure his friend of his confidence, the portrait hole opened again and Remus and you walked in. The light in the common room was brighter than the one in the hallways, because when you stepped in you held your hand for your eyes, giving James enough time to pat Sirius on his leg and nod approvingly.
Remus and you walked over to the couch where Sirius was sitting and you plopped down next to Sirius, groaning as you did so. Sirius shifted nervously in his place and James smiled to himself. It was impossible how you hadn’t noticed he liked you yet. Or maybe you had and you were just too afraid to do something.
‘Madam Pince sent us away,’ you said as you leaned forward to place three big leather books on the coffee table that stood in front of the couch. ‘Apparently laughing is a crime these days.’
‘No laughing isn’t, but you knocked over a stack of books and fell on the ground,’ Remus said to you with a twinkle in his eyes.
‘It wasn’t my fault!’ you cried out. ‘You were the one that made me laugh in the first place! She only should have thrown you out!’
James saw the way Sirius’ shoulders slumped when you turned to Remus with a big smile on your face. Remus, however, seemed to gain confidence as you talked to him, his smile getting bigger with the minute. James’ mind was fighting a battle. He knew Remus liked you and that it did him good to talk to you, but the more happy Remus was, the more sad was Sirius. And James hated to see his friend lose his confidence.
‘Remus can I talk to you?’ James said, silencing the discussion inside his head.
Remus nodded and followed James to the stairs, where Sirius and you couldn’t hear them. As James stood in front of Remus, he looked over his friend’s shoulder and saw Sirius talking to you.
‘Have you told her yet?’ James asked, like he and Remus had been having this conversation for the past weeks.
‘Told who what?’
‘y/n, that you like her?’
Remus stayed silent and stared at James’ with his jaw dropped lightly. He recollected himself quickly and shook his head. ‘No, I haven’t and I don’t see a reason why. It is obvious she likes Sirius,’ Remus answered, avoiding James’ gaze.
‘She likes you both, you idiot!’ James whisper-yelled.
Remus shook his head at his friend. ‘No, she doesn’t. Look at how she is talking to Padfoot, she is not like that with me.’
‘She is! Listen to me, Rem. She likes you and she likes Sirius. And it doesn’t seem like she likes one better than the other. So just tell her! Unless you’re more interested in Sirius of course,’ James added with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
‘What?’ Remus scoffed and his brows furrowed at James. ‘Sirius is just my friend! Why would you think that?’
‘Give it a break, mate. The way you sit next to each other and how you look at him and he looks at you.’
‘I don’t know what you are talking about, James, but I would stop it before I get angry with you.’ Remus took a step back from James and shook his head annoyed. ‘I’m going to bed,’ he said and walked past James up the stairs.
‘What about y/n?’ James asked to Remus’ back.
‘There is nothing with her, is there?’ Remus sneered without looking back at James, before he disappeared.
James walked back to you and Sirius, who were engaged in a lively conversation. James sat down in the armchair again and took his book.
‘What’s wrong with Remus?’ you asked as you looked at the now empty stairwell.
‘What happened, Prongs?’ Sirius asked, his tone sharper than yours.
James looked up from his book and shrugged. ‘He didn’t feel so good; he went to bed.’
You and Sirius looked at each other and both of you knew it was a lie, but neither of you knew the real reason.
- -- -
As soon as McGongall was done talking, James turned to Sirius beside him. He glanced over at the other side of the classroom, where Remus and Peter were sitting. James had been afraid Remus would stay mad at him, but the morning after their conversation Remus acted like nothing had happened.
Neither Sirius nor Remus had had the courage to go up to you and confess their crush yet, but James now saw an opportunity to change that. Yesterday he had spoken to your friend Amy after their quidditch practice. After she had told James about your crushes, they stayed up till it was dark to come up with a plan.
A plan that James now had to execute.
‘Padfoot,’ James whispered, catching his friend's attention. ‘I spoke with Amy-’
‘y/n's friend?’
‘Yes, she told me that y/n does have a crush on you,’ James continued.
Sirius turned red and he stared with his mouth open at James, like it was the first time someone told him that.
‘Anyway,’ James said, keeping an eye out for McGonagall who was walking around the classroom. ‘Amy and I thought it would be a good idea if you went on a date Saturday.’
Sirius still stared at his friend but then closed his mouth and nodded. ‘Yeah, yeah sure.’
Surprised at how easy it went, James turned back at his work the same time McGonagall walked over to the desks. James started to write zealously but Sirius just stared at his parchment that only had his name written on it. The professor perched an eyebrow and cleared her throat.
‘Everything fine, mister Black?’ she asked, pulling Sirius out of his thoughts.
‘Yes, everything's fine,’ Sirius answered with a dreamy voice as the took his quill back in his hand and started to write.
Maybe it was the blush on Sirius' face or maybe she just didn't want to waste her energy, but she left James and Sirius alone and went on to the students in front of them. James looked at Sirius from the corner of his eye and smiled. Part one of the plan was done.
- -- -
Part two was a bit more difficult. James had not talked to Remus about you ever since Remus snapped at him and James feared that this time maybe Remus wouldn't keep his temper and he actually would get mad at James. But he had promised Amy he'd do it and James didn't like to break his promises.
The common room was full and James and Remus had retreated back to their dorm, while Sirius was yet at another detention and Peter was downstairs playing chess with a fifth-year. Remus had his face buried in a book and James was playing with a ball he had made of his sock. He was quite nervous, honestly. Talking to Sirius had been easier, because Sirius couldn't keep a secret from James. But Remus was more closed and didn't share every single thing in his life. That was not a bad thing at all, but in moments like these James sometimes wished it was easier to crack Remus' thoughts.
‘Moony?’ James asked, making Remus look up from his page. ‘Would you like to go on a date tomorrow with y/n?’
‘Why do you ask?’ Remus shot back, raising his eyebrow.
James sat up and looked at his friend. ‘Because I spoke to Amy, y/n's friend, and she told me y/n would like it.’
Something in James' expression apparently made Remus believe that he was serious because, much to James' surprise, he nodded. James smiled and lied back down on his bed throwing the sock-ball above his head.
Remus turned back at his book, but now with a small smile on his face. James smirked to himself and thought of what a surprise it would be if Remus and Sirius saw each other tomorrow.
- -- -
Anxiously you sat at an empty table in the Three Broomsticks, waiting for Amy. She had left you there saying something about a surprise she had for you. Amy was never really the one for spontaneous surprises and when she left so hurriedly, it only added to your nerves.
With your fingers you played with the edge of your now empty glass staring at the door, hoping Amy would come through it.
But instead of Amy, it was Sirius who walked through the door. Your cheeks coloured as he made eye-contact with you and then proceeded to walk over to your table. He bumped into a table and had to stop to make is apology, giving you some time to look out the window and find Amy. She was watching you and James stood besides her, giving you a thumbs up. You groaned and turned your head back to Sirius, who now had reached your table.
‘I take this seat is empty?’ he asked as he took off his jacket.
‘Yes, it is,’ you said, trying to hide your sigh.
When Amy told you she had a surprise for you, you had never expected this. You made a note to yourself to be mad at her later. But now you had to enjoy your given time with Sirius, something that wouldn't be very difficult.
You made some small talk with Sirius, until he noticed your empty glass and offered to get new drinks. When he was at the bar ordering drinks, you looked outside again, hoping to find Amy there. But she was gone and so was James. The road was empty.
And as if you hadn't been ‘lucky' enough, at the same time Sirius made his was back to your table with two butterbeers, Remus walked into the Three Broomsticks. Remus reached the table sooner than Sirius and he smiled at you as you nervously shifted in your seat.
‘Hey, Rem,’ you greeted him and from the corner of your eye, you saw James and Amy reappear in front of the window. Amy gestured at Remus and then at Sirius and she pouted her lips. With a shock you realised what she had done and your eyes widened. Panicky you turned to Remus but before you could say anything, Sirius talked,
‘Hey, Moony, what are you doing here?’
‘James sent me here,’ Remus mumbled.
Sirius stopped halfway putting the glasses on the table, leaving them twenty inches above the table. He looked up at Remus and a small blush formed on his cheeks.
‘James sent me here, too,’ he said.
You watched and saw the realisation dawn on Remus' face. He looked from Sirius at you and back at Sirius. Then he turned on his heels and walked rapidly out of the space, slamming the door shut with a loud bang. A few people in the bar looked up.
You turned to Sirius as he had his eyes focused on the closed door. He slowly sat down on the chair next to you and then averted his eyes to the surface of the table.
‘Do you like Remus?’ you asked softly, not wanting other people to hear the conversation.
Sirius kept staring at his hands, but he nodded lightly.
‘And do you like me?’
He nodded again.
‘Okay,’ you said and you placed your hand on his shoulder, forcing him to look up to you. ‘I like you too, Sirius. And I also like Remus. And I know he likes you too.’
Sirius smiled sadly at you. ‘No, he doesn't. I’m just his friend. He likes you and he wouldn't have run away if it weren't for me.’
‘He ran away because this is a big shock,’ you said, looking into the grey eyes that made you melt inside. ‘Not because he doesn't like you.’
You placed a kiss on Sirius' cheek and pulled him out of his chair. ‘We have a lot to talk about,’ you said and took him outside.
- -- -
James ran after Remus as this one fled from the bar. Though Remus was fast, James managed to catch up with him. He grabbed Remus' arm and turned him around. Remus’ eyes were full of tears and they flamed as he looked at James.
‘Why did you do that?’ Remus spat. ‘Did you think it was funny? Oh, haha, let's prank Remus by sending him to y/n's date with Sirius!’
Remus pulled himself from James' grip and walked away. James ran after him and stopped in front of Remus, blocking his way.
‘Remus, listen to me!’ James cried out and he took his friend by his shoulders. ‘She likes you and Sirius! Sirius likes her and you!’
Remus snorted and tried to shake James' hands off him, but James didn't let go and continued,
‘I know you like her! And I know you like Sirius! If you walk away now, you waste every chance you have with her! Just listen to me, please.’
James let go of Remus and took a step back, giving him the chance to walk away. But Remus stayed where he was and looked at James.
‘I spoke to Amy and she said that y/n was willing to try dating both of you. I would have told you, if I hadn't known that this is the way you would react! Talk to her, listen to her!’
Remus kept his mouth shut and then shook his head. He ignored James' last attempts to get him to his senses and walked off, back to the castle.
He couldn't just date both, it would be too complicated. And besides, there was no way that Sirius liked him; he himself wasn't even sure what he felt for Sirius. It was a feeling that he had never had before. It wasn't the butterflies he got when you smiled at him or the shivers like he got when you touched him. What he felt for Sirius was a feeling that made him feel comfortable. There was no shame with Sirius.
As the sun shone on his face, while Remus walked through the open field back to the castle, he realised that maybe was he felt for Sirius was indeed a form of love. But another form than he felt for you.
He stopped in his tracks and stared at the road back to Hogwarts. Who was he kidding? Everyone else seemed to have accepted that you, Sirius and Remus would date, who was he to then deny it? He liked you, he liked Sirius. Why not?
Remus turned around and ran back to Hogsmeade. He passed students that looked at him like he was crazy, he passed shops that were only a colourful blur. The streets moved under his feet like it wasn't he who was running, but the world was spinning under his feet.
The Three Broomsticks was reached soon, but there was no sign of you or Sirius. Even Amy and James were gone now. Remus stood in the middle of the street and caught his breath, while thinking of places you and Sirius could be.
His feet brought him to his favourite spot of Hogsmeade. Though the house brought unhappy memories, the grounds around the Shrieking Shack were always silent and the crowd was gone. It was a place of peace and silence and a great spot to clear your mind.
However, as Remus walked over the grass through the fence, he heard voices. Familiar voices.
He looked to the side and saw you and Sirius, in what seemed like a serious conversation. Guilt crept up to Remus for invading such a private moment, but James' words echoed in his head. He walked over to you and Sirius and when a twig broke under his foot, you looked up. Both you and Sirius blushed at the sight of Remus and a warm feeling washed over Remus as he watched the two people he loved.
‘Come sit,’ you said and patted on the space next to you on the bench.
Remus did and as you started to talk, he looked at Sirius. This one looked back and a similar smile spread on the boys' faces. Remus looked back at you while you talked. He heard what you said, but only got the essence of your story.
‘Do you think we can do this?’ you asked, breaking the silence that had fallen after you were done talking.
‘If there's anyone who can do this, it's us,’ Sirius grinned.
‘Couldn't agree more,’ Remus said and he smiled at Sirius.
It would be a difficult road, but you'll make it work.

Hi! Love your writing, it's really good! If it doesn't bother you, could you do a yugi amane (when it was alive) x a sick reader. Thank you!
forgive me friend for not doing this ;-; i hope you understand since this year has been so hectic. i don’t think this is my most best work but hey i tried hhh i still feel really confused when on tumblr so forgive me for that as well
Tumblr media
Amane Yugi x sick reader
It was a normal day for everyone, that is, everyone except for Yugi Amane. His honey coloured eyes didn’t have that playful twinkle it always had and instead was narrowed in what seemed like concern. They darted over to the door of the classroom too much for his comfort, wondering if your bubbly figure would come any moment now. No one noticed it since it was only reg and most students were talking to each other. Yes, it was only reg, it would be fine, you’d come in at any time now. his thoughts were a mirage of worry and what-ifs that made his head swirl. However, the sounds of his reg class laughing and talking started to drown out those thoughts. He folded his arms and laid his head flat against the desk. With his swirling thoughts, the noise only worsened his mood and slowly turned into a headache. People could be so annoying sometimes.
In the end, you didn’t come.
Amane was at first worried since you believed in perfect attendance, wondering out loud where you were to his brother at break. He had looked at him and blinked with a smile, pointing out one big detail that Amane seemed to have missed “Amane, it was raining really hard yesterday, remember? She might have just got sick! Don’t worry too much,’kay?” Amane looked at his brother with a face of realisation, mouth-blown out like an ‘o’ while his eyes regained its twinkle. That was right, the huge droplets of water had refused to let go of their reign of the land when it was time to go home, and so through critical deduction of solutions, you and Tsukasa had a race to see who could run home the fastest.
Amane had voiced his concerns for the idea, but since you and his brother had already shot out into the rain, he sighed and followed the two of you but more slowly and of course with an umbrella. He didn’t know how Tsukasa wasn’t worried for you since it wasn’t like you to be off at all. You had once come into school when you had a tummy bug and made a scene when you ran to the nearest bathroom. If you went to school with an upset stomach, this must be even more serious. Amane was also confused about how Tsukasa didn’t get sick himself but didn’t bother to ask since it would have been a stupid question.
Even if Tsukasa said not to worry, of course, Amane started to worry more. It was like him after all, even if he rarely showed it. So when it was time to go home, he told Tsukasa to go home without him while he checked up on you. Tsukasa just smiled and nodded, not even asking if he could join him. Amane walked up to your house and opened the gate, walking in without forgetting to close it again. With three long strides to the front door, he knocked on the door loudly.
...No one came to the door.
He was expecting this. At least kind of. Your parents worked a lot and would leave you to your own devices. If you didn’t come and get the door then…
Amane frowned. Now he knew that you definitely weren’t okay. It didn’t sit right with him to just leave you alone to suffer from your illness. He’d feel like a bad friend since he knew of your sickness and didn’t try to help you. He looked around and settled on lifting a gardening pot that was laid on the ground near the front door to see if anything was under it and was relieved to see that a spare key was hidden there. Using it, he opened the door and walked in.
He felt a bit weird intruding into your house without notifying you first. It’s not as if he was breaking in, so why did it feel like it? Shaking the feeling off, he closed the door and took off his shoes peering through the main hallway of the house. “...Hello? [Y/n]?” Amane called out softly into the house. Silence echoed back and Amane’s eyes only narrowed in response. He left this bag slumped near the door of the house and slowly made his ascent to your room. The room was the nearest to him and was marked with your name etched into it to claim the room as yours.
Slowly, he opened the door, and instantly saw the darkness that enveloped it. The only light he saw was the small, dim beams of sunlight that peeked through from the curtains and to your bed. From what he could see, he could see your normally energetic self curled into a small ball, almost motionless if it weren’t for the slow breaths that you took. You looked wrecked, your normally soft hair now wet with sweat and stuck onto your forehead. Your eyes were shut closed in pain it seemed and your laboured breaths sounded wheezy and sore.
Amane frowned at this, the sight of you that sick made his heart writhe in pain. So with a quick smile, he set to work.
———-
Today had to be one of your worst days.
When you woke up, you woke up sticky and sore at nearly five in the morning. Your eyes felt like they had been staring into the sun for at least a day which left you with the rest of your senses to fend for you, but one problem, the rest of your senses weren’t even working. Your sense of smell was almost null since your nose kept on being blocked and the feeling of sneezing never left. Anything you touched felt warm to you and made you want to creep away from it from how warm you already felt. Your hearing was affected by your sense of smell, leaving you partly deaf as well.
Your mother had scolded you, saying how it was silly what you had done the day before. And through the whole lecture, your head and everything else got worse so you couldn’t concentrate on what she was saying. In the end, she had left you alone in the house to go to work since it was too late to ask to be off today. Your dad was on a business trip that day and wouldn’t be home until late that week, so now you had no one to help you. But that was alright because all you wanted to do was to sleep.
When you opened your eyes for the first time since that morning, the first thing you comprehended was a wet and cold sensation on the top of your forehead. The next thing you noticed was a quiet hum of a song beside you. It sounded like a lullaby, coaxing you to sleep once more. It had made you smile, and before you knew it, you opened your eyes. The stinging hadn’t left, but at least you didn’t feel like opening them was a chore. The ceiling of your room was blurry, colours swirling in and out of view before a face appeared along with a smile. “Am I...dead?” You blurted out which made the owner of the face laugh a bit, sounding relieved to hear your voice. Then, hands reached out to your forehead and took off the cold that caressed your face. You groaned at the lack of comfort that brought, but as soon as you did, the face brought the cold back but only this time it was even colder and slightly wetter. You sighed in relief, the rush of oxygen actually feeling nice.
“No, you’re not dead,” the figure teased, and it was when you heard that familiar teasing and playful voice that you realised that the figure that was taking care of you was none other than Amane. Your eyes shot open as your mouth drew agape, panic and disbelief flooding your system when you realised that your best friend was the one taking care of you and not an angelic being from the clouds above. As soon as your head moved off the pillow, a rush of pain shot up your spine and into your head, making it apparent that you were also dehydrated. Amane, surprised at the sudden movement, slowly pushed you back down into the bed and placed the fallen wet cloth back on your forehead.
“Why are you here? You should be at your house!” You whined pathetically, glaring at him with as much annoyance as you could muster in that time. But seeing Amane’s worried lopsided smile made you sigh and look away, letting Amane continue with what he was doing.
The look made it very obvious to you that he wasn’t going anywhere. At least, not in a long time. He was the type of person that didn’t have a lot of friends and the friends that he did have he cherished like gold. Pushing him away would be futile and you knew it even if you were only a young teenager. But knowing that Amane too was a young teenager looking after you didn’t sit well with you either, so you opened your mouth to- “Don’t try, you’re too sick to move,” you turned back to Amane with a dumbfounded look. What? How did he know? With a smile he giggled at your confused expression “I live with a brother who gets sick like this sometimes. I’m used to it so don’t worry,” you pouted at that. It didn’t make you feel any less bad, but since he knew what he was doing put you at ease, you were at least a bit more compliant.
Amane babied you, helping you to sit up so you could read books on your shelf or just to keep you company. He brought you some soup your mother had quickly made for you and spoon-fed you despite your flustered attempts to make him stop. This only made him tease you more as he pretended it was an aeroplane like you would do for a toddler. Soon, the afternoon turned to evening, and Amane watched as your slightly more energetic self turned more and more tired until opening your eyes seemed like a chore. He had deemed it late enough and coaxed you into lying down, tucking you into bed. After keeping you company and also looking after you for the day he realised he too was tired. Now he just wanted to sleep.
“Goodbye [Y/n],” he said softly, seeing the way your eyes barely stayed open. You were fighting sleep, and for someone as sick as you, sleep would be very important for you “Get well soon, I’ll check up on you tomorrow,” he turned to leave, but before he could, you had grasped his hand to make him stay.
“It’s too late now, isn’t it? Don’t go now. I’ll feel worried for you,”
Amane looked out the window and noticed that it indeed was late. The street lamps were on, headlights of cars zoomed past leaving streaks of white in their wake and the sound of the crickets had finally made its way to his ears. Looking back to you, he saw the way that you were sitting up a bit since you reached out to grab his hand. Your eyes were pleading, of course, something you would muster to make Amane stay since he couldn’t say no to any puppy eyes, especially yours or Tsukasa’s. The reasonable answer was to stay with you since at night it was much more dangerous. So as Amane weighed his options, he let out a sigh and nodded, slipping under the covers with you. In your tired state, you had wrapped your arms around him, burying your face into his shoulder. Amane was almost sure that with this close proximity that he was going to get sick as well, but for him it was worth it since he was able to hug you for a night.
“Mmm love you Amane,”
Amane felt his cheeks light up. Was that an accident? It must be. Maybe you just meant it platonically. Why was he even thinking about that? Of course, you meant it platonically. Was he getting sick already? Yeah, that had to be it. Smiling he closed his eyes, already feeling more tired than he was a second ago.
“...love you too,”
Amane was definitely sick. But his sickness was an entirely different sickness than the one that you had.

Why ‘worthless’ humanity degrees may set you up for life
Original Article by Amanda Ruggeri
http://www.bbc.com/capital/story/20190401-why-worthless-humanities-degrees-may-set-you-up-for-life
At university, when I told people I was studying for a history degree, the response was almost always the same: “You want to be a teacher?”. No, a journalist. “Oh. But you’re not majoring in communications?”
In the days when a university education was the purview of a privileged few, perhaps there wasn’t the assumption that a degree had to be a springboard directly into a career. Those days are long gone.
Today, a degree is all but a necessity for the job market, one that more than halves your chances of being unemployed. Still, that alone is no guarantee of a job – and yet we’re paying more and more for one. In the US, room, board and tuition at a private university costs an average of $48,510 a year; in the UK, tuition fees alone are £9,250 ($12,000) per year for home students; in Singapore, four years at a private university can cost up to SGD$69,336 (US$51,000).
Learning for the sake of learning is a beautiful thing. But given those costs, it’s no wonder that most of us need our degrees to pay off in a more concrete way. Broadly, they already do: in the US, for example, a bachelor’s degree holder earns $461 more each week than someone who never attended a university.
But most of us want to maximise that investment – and that can lead to a plug-and-play type of approach to higher education. Want to be a journalist? Study journalism, we’re told. A lawyer? Pursue pre-law. Not totally sure? Go into Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths) – that way, you can become an engineer or IT specialist. And no matter what you do, forget the liberal arts – non-vocational degrees that include natural and social sciences, mathematics and the humanities, such as history, philosophy and languages.
This has been echoed by statements and policies around the world. In the US, politicians from Senator Marco Rubio to former President Barack Obama have made the humanities a punch line. (Obama later apologised). In China, the government has unveiled plans to turn 42 universities into “world class” institutions of science and technology. In the UK, government focus on Stem has led to a nearly 20% drop in students taking A-levels in English and a 15% decline in the arts.
But there’s a problem with this approach. And it’s not just that we’re losing out on crucial ways to understand and improve both the world and ourselves – including enhancing personal wellbeing, sparking innovation and helping create tolerance, among other values.
It’s also that our assumptions about the market value of certain degrees – and the “worthlessness” of others – might be off. At best, that could be making some students unnecessarily stressed. At worst? Pushing people onto paths that set them up for less fulfilling lives. It also perpetuates the stereotype of liberal arts graduates, in particular, as an elite caste – something that can discourage underprivileged students, and anyone else who needs an immediate return on their university investment, from pursuing potentially rewarding disciplines. (Though, of course, this is hardly the only diversity problemsuch disciplines have).
   Soft skills, critical thinking
George Anders is convinced we have the humanities in particular all wrong. When he was a technology reporter for Forbes from 2012 to 2016, he says Silicon Valley “was consumed with this idea that there was no education but Stem education”.
But when he talked to hiring managers at the biggest tech companies, he found a different reality. “Uber was picking up psychology majors to deal with unhappy riders and drivers. Opentable was hiring English majors to bring data to restauranteurs to get them excited about what data could do for their restaurants,” he says.
“I realised that the ability to communicate and get along with people, and understand what’s on other people’s minds, and do full-strength critical thinking – all of these things were valued and appreciated by everyone as important job skills, except the media.” This realisation led him to write his appropriately-titled book You Can Do Anything: The Surprising Power of a “Useless” Liberal Arts Education.
Take a look at the skills employers say they’re after. LinkedIn’s research on the most sought-after job skills by employers for 2019 found that the three most-wanted “soft skills” were creativity, persuasion and collaboration, while one of the five top “hard skills” was people management. A full 56% of UK employers surveyed said their staff lacked essential teamwork skills and 46% thought it was a problem that their employees struggled with handling feelings, whether theirs or others’. It’s not just UK employers: one 2017 study found that the fastest-growing jobs in the US in the last 30 years have almost all specifically required a high level of social skills.
Or take it directly from two top executives at tech giant Microsoft who wrote recently: "As computers behave more like humans, the social sciences and humanities will become even more important. Languages, art, history, economics, ethics, philosophy, psychology and human development courses can teach critical, philosophical and ethics-based skills that will be instrumental in the development and management of AI solutions.
Of course, it goes without saying that you can be an excellent communicator and critical thinker without a liberal arts degree. And any good university education, not just one in English or psychology, should sharpen these abilities further. “Any degree will give you very important generic skills like being able to write, being able to present an argument, research, problem-solve, teamwork, becoming familiar with technology,” says Dublin-based educational consultant and career coach Anne Mangan.
But few courses of study are quite as heavy on reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking as the liberal arts, in particular the humanities – whether that’s by debating other students in a seminar, writing a thesis paper or analysing poetry.
When asked to drill the most job market-ready skills of a humanities graduate down to three, Anders doesn’t hesitate. “Creativity, curiosity and empathy,” he says. “Empathy is usually the biggest one. That doesn’t just mean feeling sorry for people with problems. It means an ability to understand the needs and wants of a diverse group of people.
“Think of people who oversee clinical drug tests. You need to get doctors, nurses, regulators all on the same page. You have to have the ability to think about what’s going to get this 72-year-old woman to feel comfortable being tracked long term, what do we have to do so this researcher takes this study seriously. That’s an empathy job.”
But in general, say Anders and others, the benefit of a humanities degree is the emphasis it puts on teaching students to think, critique and persuade – often in the grey areas where there isn’t much data available or you need to work out what to believe.
It’s small wonder, therefore, that humanities graduates go on to a variety of fields. The biggest group of US humanities graduates, 15%, go on to management positions. That’s followed by 14% who are in in office and administrative positions, 13% who are in sales and another 12% who are in education, mostly teaching. Another 10% are in business and finance.
And while there’s often an assumption that the careers humanities graduates pursue just aren’t as good as the jobs snapped up by, say, engineers or medics, that isn’t the case. In Australia, for example, three of the 10 fastest-growing occupations are sales assistants, clerks, and advertising, public relations and sales managers – all of which might look familiar as fields that humanities graduates tend to pursue.
Meanwhile, Glassdoor’s 2019 research found that eight of the top 10 best jobs in the UK were managerial positions – people-oriented roles that require communication skills and emotional intelligence. (It defined "best" by combining earning potential, overall job satisfaction rating and number of job openings.) And many of them were outside Stem-based industries. The third best job was marketing manager; fourth, product manager; fifth, sales manager. An engineering role doesn’t appear on the list until the 18th slot – below positions in communications, HR and project management.
One recent study of 1,700 people from 30 countries, meanwhile, found that the majority of those in leadership positions had either a social sciences or humanities degree. That was especially true of leaders under 45 years of age; leaders over 45 were more likely to have studied Stem.
This isn’t to say that a liberal arts degree is the easy road. “A lot of the people I talked to were five or 10 years into their career, and there was a sense that the first year was bumpy, and it took a while to find their footing,” Anders says. “But as things played out, it did tend to work.”
For some graduates, the initial challenge was not knowing what they wanted to do with their lives. For others, it was not having acquired as many technical skills with their degree as, say, their IT trainee peers and having to play catch-up after.
But pursuing a more vocational degree can come with its own risks too. Not every teenager knows exactly what they want to do with their lives, and our career aspirations often change over time. One UK report found that more than one-third of Brits have changed careers in their lifetime. LinkedIn found that 40% of professionals are interested in making a “career pivot” – and younger people are interested most of all. Focusing on broadly applicable skills like critical thinking no longer seems like such a moon shot when you consider how many different jobs and industries they can be applied to (though for a young person figuring out their career path, it’s true that flexibility also can feel overwhelming).
Specialized technical skills are important in the job market too. But there are a number of ways to acquire them. “I’m very pro-internships and apprenticeships. We’ve seen that that can directly correlate to you having a more grounded skill base in the workplace,” says career development coach Christina Georgalla.
“I even advocate that post-university, if you’re not sure, take a year out and instead of going travelling, actually trial doing different internships. Even if it’s the same field but in TV, say, broadcasting versus producing versus presenting, so you can see the difference.”
But what about the other perceived pitfalls – like a higher unemployment rate and lower salaries?
Why broader matters
It’s true that the humanities come with a higher risk of unemployment. But it’s worth noting that the risk is slighter than you’d imagine. For young people (aged 25-34) in the US, the unemployment rate of those with a humanities degree is 4%. An engineering or business degree comes with an unemployment rate of a little more than 3%. That single additional percentage point is one extra person per 100, such a small amount it’s often within the margin of error of many surveys.
Salaries aren’t so straightforward either. Yes, in the UK, the top earnings are pulled in by those who study medicine or dentistry, economics or maths; in the US, engineering, physical sciences or business. Some of the most popular humanities, such as history or English, are in the bottom half of the group.
But there’s more to the story – including that for some jobs, it seems that it’s actually better to start with a broader degree, rather than a professional one.
Take law. In the US, an undergraduate student who took the seemingly most direct route to becoming a lawyer, judge or magistrate – majoring in a pre-law or legal studies degree – can expect to earn an average of $94,000 a year. But those who majored in philosophy or religious studies make an average of $110,000. Graduates who studied area, ethnic and civilisations studies earn $124,000, US history majors earn $143,000 and those who studied foreign languages earn $148,000, a stunning $54,000 a year above their pre-law counterparts.
There are similar examples in other industries too. Take managers in the marketing, advertising and PR industries: those who majored in advertising and PR earn about $64,000 a year – but those who studied liberal arts make $84,000.
And even while overall salary disparities do remain, it may not be the degree itself. Humanities graduates in particular are more likely to be female. We all know about the gender pay gap, and notable wage disparities persist in the humanities: US men who major in the humanities have median earnings of $60,000, for example, while women make $48,000. Since more than six in 10 humanities majors are women, the gender pay gap, not the degree, may be to blame.
We also know that as more women move into a field, the field’s overall earnings go down. Given that, is it any wonder that English majors, seven in 10 of whom are women, tend to make less than engineers, eight in 10 of whom are men?
Do what you love
This is a big part of why there is one major takeaway, says Mangan. Whatever a student pursues in university, it must be something that they aren’t just good at, but they really enjoy.
“In most areas that I can see, the employer just wants to know that you’ve been to college and you’ve done well. That’s why I think doing something that really interests you is essential – because that’s when you’re going to do well,” she says.
No matter what, making a degree or career path decision based on average salaries isn’t a good move. “Financial success is not a good reason. It tends to be a very poor reason,” Mangan says. “Be successful at something and money will follow, as opposed to the other way around. Focus on doing the stuff that you love that you’ll be so enthusiastic about, people will want to give you a job. Then go and develop within that job.”
This speaks to a broader point: the whole question of whether a student should choose Stem versus the humanities, or a vocational course versus a liberal arts degree, might be misguided to begin with. It’s not as if most of us have an equal amount of passion and aptitude for, say, accounting and art history. Plenty of people know what they love most. They just don’t know if they should pursue it. And the headlines most of us see don’t help.
This is part of why parents and teachers often need to take a step back, Mangan says. “There is only one expert. I’m the expert on me, you’re the expert on you, they’re the expert on themselves,” she says. “And nobody, I really mean nobody, can tell them how to do what they should be doing.”
Even, it seems, if that means pursuing a “useless” degree – like one in liberal arts.

Speed Awareness Lessons Learnt
Ok so who hasn’t been caught speeding?
Aargh such a ball-ache, but hey ho, after being caught in the same place 3 times in a month I couldn’t afford to take the points, so had no choice but to go to the Speed Awareness Course.
The worst thing is that each time I got caught I saw the unmistakable white van with the lift up back window, checked my speed and thought, ‘I’m under, I’m ok’.
Then that green letter arrives in the post and you know that you made an error in judgement.
I resigned myself to sitting through a boring presentation and getting rapped over the knuckles, but then I thought, ‘I’m not the kind of guy who wastes time on this kind of thing’. So, instead of thinking I was wasting time, what could I learn from the experience? It’s an attitude that has stood me in good stead when I have no choice in attending something.
A similar thing happened 30 years ago when I had no choice but to join the Conscription in the South African Defence Force, only then it had not been 4 hours but 2 years, plus the equivalent of 3 months, every 2 years until I was 40!
All my friends had told me it was a complete waste of 2 years of your life, so I would do the same as everybody else. . . waste 2 years and do as little as possible.
It took about 7 days for me to realise that was idiotic advice: –
how could doing nothing improve you?
how could being commanded to run from place to place be a worthwhile life experience?
how could simply obeying orders mindlessly be character building?
how could I change my stars?
what could I do to give myself a brighter future?
The tipping point was when we were roughly assembled on the parade ground in the best kind of line that misfits could muster, the regimental Sergeant Major had just walked past and we had been called to attention. This was Career Soldier; a man at the peak of his career who commanded an amount of respect. But then a 1 star, newly commissioned Lieutenant who had just completed his 10 months training walked past and the regimental Sergeant Major jumped to attention and saluted.
I was astounded!!
That day I made a decision that in 12 months that lieutenant would be me and I would do whatever it took to make that happen.
I guess what you don’t know is that this was about as likely as the moon falling out of its orbit!
The reason was quite simple, I was a wimp; bullied all the way through school with few friends and always at the bottom of the class. The one thing I had on my side was that no one here knew anything about my past. It was the first big lesson, I discovered here, being at the top of the class meant nothing; being the captain of the football team did, apparently that gave you some leadership qualities. Being a sportsman was considered to be the ultimate achievement, nothing to do with the army, more to do with regimental rivalry.
Being a loner, I was no team player, but I knew that I had more leadership skills than all of those in my platoon.
Just how was I going to prove that? I was not the fittest, the fastest, the biggest or the smallest, just somewhere in the middle.
So, I just knuckled down and took every single advantage that I could. Being dyslexic was going to be a problem, but here they didn’t care if you were ‘stupid’, the more ‘stupid’ the better really, ‘Food for powder’ to quote Falstaff.
I just had to be better; smarter and brighter than everyone else, and plan.
I often look back and thank my lucky stars for conscription
Basic training has just one purpose: to break and kick the shit out of you, then drive you to extremes of exhaustion greater than any you could foresee and then drive you further until you consider yourself to be less than nothing. Once you get there, they pile you with problems, and all the time they’re looking for the potential non-commissioned officers; the sergeants and corporals, the bullies and the team captains, and for those that are driven to excel, those that do the thinking, the planning and the ones who come up with the solutions when all the bullies have failed and everyone else has given up, these are the officer material.
I took every advantage I could.
I slept under my bed instead of on top of it.
On my first home break I sewed fine seams into my trousers and my pillowslips.
I cut plastic strips and sprayed my blanket with liquid floor polish so that the pile once brushed never needed brushing again.
All of this was done for one reason: to give me more time studying and less time ironing.
There was a strict lights out policy at 10pm, inspection at 5am, so I would swat under my bed with a torch.
Because writing was a challenge, I used to ask questions all the time, non-stop. The more questions I asked, the better the understanding I had. Asking questions has always been my thing; it avoids misunderstanding, but having a clear understanding meant that at least I would not have to run to the furthest bush with my rifle above my head.
The only issue was being rollicked for being too stupid to understand in the first place.
The great thing about military exams is that instead of having to write essays on explanations or views, all exams were multiple choice. I guess that’s because, on the whole, the corporals who were doing the teaching were too dumb to understand a good argument, and all operational exams were based on results: a competition, the tactical advantage, quick thinking with fast and accurate decisions, making a plan and seeing it through were key.
I often look back at my 2 years in the army and thank my lucky stars for conscription; that I was fortunate enough to have had that opportunity and milk it for all that it was worth.
Like so many of the people who went in, it could have been the biggest waste of time; instead it was the greatest opportunity to set myself up that I have ever been given, the training to see opportunities in adverse circumstances and turn them to your advantage.
There is no doubt that I look at this differently from others, partly due to training, but mostly because of my personality, and when a situation is forced upon me I look for the lesson to be learned.
The Speed Awareness Course was not a waste of time at all; it was well presented and informative, it gave me a new set of skills that I can employ so that I can be better aware.
Obviously, I don’t agree with all of their comments, especially about not listening to audiobooks or training programs whilst driving.
Idiots, my van is my university and without intelligent stimulation via training or audiobooks I would be fast asleep behind the wheel on a motorway in under 30 minutes.
I guess everyone is different; while many would find business growth cd’s and programs on marketing boring, my wife ‘The Dragon’ definitely included in that, I do not, and a 14 hour drive to Orkney to deliver and install an oven would be quite unbearable if I didn’t think I could learn something on the way.
The biggest take-away from the course however was to drive in
3rd in a 30
4th in a 40
5th in a 50
. . . and if there are street lights of any kind it’s 30 mph, unless the signs say otherwise.
Happy motoring and I hope you can try to see the best of every situation and use every situation that is forced on you as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Mindful Eating for Weight Loss
Mindful eating: The key to effortless weight loss
What if the increase in obesity was directly correlated with the rise in our modern distractions? After all, we are more distracted than ever. Ever been in human history have we been feeing with so many things vying for our attention. As a outcome, we are eating more calories than we could ever need. We can’t even devour a meal without checking our phone. Simply reconnecting with your food and eating without distraction can cause feeing less meat, while being MORE satisfied.
For years, I’ve wanted to write about my own weight loss pilgrimage on this blog, but there were so many things comprising me back. For one, I don’t like to talk about adult weight loss, on a platform for children. It’s a struggle for me to balance my personal physical purposes with parenting. I don’t ever crave my kids to see me “obsess” about my load, or have them misinterpret my weight loss struggles as being unsatisfied with my life.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the message of mindful eating needed to be shared. In reality, I’ve come to see how valued it is for any child or adult, even if they don’t need to lose weight. Practicing mindful eating can improve so many other areas of person or persons life, and teach kids skills that will assist them be healthier for the rest of their own lives. I’d love to have more conversations, sections, and resources here about mindful living in all areas, because it is a way to gain better health.
What is mindful eating?
So often in eating, there is no intermission. We realise a cookie on the counter and, before we know it, we’ve devoured it. Without noticing, it steals down our throats. Feeing the cookie happens without us being aware or present, so we decide to eat another cookie, and another. We necessity more cookies to be satisfied because there is no remembrance of the moment we enjoyed the first cookie. Mindful living presents us the opportunity to pause between a stimulus and a response, and become involved in the moment. To quote the great Victor Frankl TAGEND
” Between stimulus and response there is a room. In that room is our strength to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom .”
Mindful eating is honoring that space between craving a piece of meat and devouring it. It’s seeing your meal on your sheet and then devouring it with goal, being full present for the meat. Mindful devouring differs from intuitive eating for me. Intuitive feeing is asking to see your figure what it wants to eat, and what it needs. To which I’d ever see, I requirement cookies! LOL. But mindful eating has been different. Instead it focuses on the course of carrying out eating, or what you are doing while you are eating healthy food.
6 Stairs to Mindful Eating
I’ve outlined 6 stairs that have been the most helpful to me to practice mindfulness at each meal.
Establishing three periods of time during the day for intentional, purposeful eating. Do you remember when your parents or grandparents taught you to eat 3 times per day? And then the fitness “experts” came in, telling us we therefore destroying our metabolism and we should be eating 6 meal a day! And then that turned into eating ALL day. The fastest way to not be present with your food is to graze on food the working day, and never sit down to a meal that has a beginning and an intention.
Creating a room during banquets free of common distractions.( no phone, books, computer, publication, TV, etc ). This is to be able to uncomfortable! I enjoy scrolling my social feeds while I eat breakfast. But putting away the machines and reading material are essential in devouring mindfully.
Chew gradually and experience each bite. If you are too busy to eat your meat slowly, you are too busy. Throw the meat down, and wait until you have time to sit down and amply munch your food, even though it is you think you are starving. I’ve timed a lot of snacks, and most meals, chewed gradually takes fewer than 10 times.
Identify the savours, flavors, and texture of each gnaw. This might be my favorite portion! When actually savor your meat, you will be surprised to find healthy food delicious and junk food less appealing than you thought.
Complete eating each bite before you fill your forking again. It goes without saying, shoveling more food into your mouth before you’ve finished the last gnaw is not being mindful.
Assess hunger mid-meal to see if you are full, almost full, or ready to stop. You don’t have to finish your meal, ever. This is where you listen to your torso and let it decide if you’ve had enough.
Building mindful eating operate during a meal
Take a deep breath midway through the dinner.
Determine if sufficient time has passed to send the thirst and satiety signals to your psyche.
Threw your fork down, and take a large guzzle of liquid.
Check in with your belly. What are you feeling? Are your gasps getting tighter? Is the belly distended uncomfortably?
Evaluate whether or not your meal becomes less satisfying as you continue to eat. It’s common for the first few bites, when we are the hungriest, to be the most pleasurable of the dinner. As we get full, the amusement decreases. When the snack is greater delivering the same pleasure, it’s a signal to our figure that we may be close to finished.
Identify distractions. Are you still attaches great importance to your meal, or has your head strayed to interesting thing? Are you allowing yourself to assimilate other distractions in your environment that you are not able to have control over? Only when you are paying attention can you fully analyze if there continue to hungry enough to finish your meal.
I have 5 daily practices that helped me master personal mindfulness without anticipations, frets, labeling, or judgment. To turn these 5 practises into habits, I recommend doing them every day.
Make a programme- Decide your dinner times at the opening up of the day.
Move your torso- Exercising daily.
Meditation- Practice daily reflection and affirmations.
Mindful journal- Write your thoughts daily in a journal.
Mind focused on intention- Check in with yourself during the day to become more aware and present.
CHALLENGE: Make me 40 days!
By devouring mindfully, I was able to lose” the last 10 lbs” in 40 periods. I never guessed I’d understand mindful eating because I don’t like slowing down. I was the opposite of what I considered mindful! But now that I have figured it out, I am eventually free from meat obsession. Long proceeded are the days I invested the working day scheming what I was going to eat and thinking about my next dinner. Reading, just listened to podcasts, and trying a new diet a few months was wearing me out! Now, I truly feel like it’s easier to enjoy life! And as a bonus- I STILL LOVE FOOD, but now, food delivers me amusement, while effortlessly eating fewer and assuring weight loss results.

I was excited this week by Kin & Kind’s Re-shaping After Career Breaking workshop, which brought together four experts in their fields to talk career advancement post-parenthood (I’ll be trying out job sharing platform Puffling, and have ordered Jayne Anderson’s Working It Out: Career, Family and You). Being realistic about who you are, where you’re at, and what you need was underscored as important – something designer, stylist, and mum to Goldie (three) and Clover (one) Simone Haag has down pat.
Today we catch-up with the in-demand creative on climbing new career heights with tikes.
After what I can only imagine was quite a wild time working in extreme sports, events and PR, you started at Hecker Guthrie as a receptionist – leaving eight years later as design and communications manager to have your first child and go freelance. Can I write your biography?!
Yes, please – it’s quite a story, with one incredible job leading to the next. It all started with a season at Mt Buller, where I met the crew from a Canadian heliboarding lodge. Before I knew it, I was working there, in Chamonix for two seasons, then at London’s Sanderson Hotel organising parties for the likes of Elton John, Madonna, and Sting.
After a chance meeting with Quiksilver’s CEO, I joined their boat, The Crossing, and sailed around the US for two years – doing events and PR with surfing legends like Kelly Slater. A spell spent working on private jets (my first flight involved escorting a Hollywood heavyweight to Fiji) led me back to Melbourne; I was ready to lay down some roots after reuniting with my now husband, Rhys.
I cold-called Hecker Guthrie in the hope of landing a comparatively settled job in a creative environment, and with enthusiasm, a sponge-like disposition, and hard work, my role grew from administration to design and communications. I found my mojo in the furnishing and layering stage of high-end residential projects, and today can’t quite believe I have a business completing client homes – my passion and livelihood rolled into one.
You’ve said, ‘I knew I couldn’t do the work in the same way and it felt like the right time to start out on my own.’ With mothers of young children being the fastest growing demographic of freelancers, you’re not alone. Do you think there’s a sense that it’s up to us to create roles that suit our families, not workplaces to become more family-friendly?
It’s an interesting question, and there’s no one-shoe-fits-all solution. I was certainly offered a flexible return to studio life but, like retiring after winning gold, I left when I knew I had given it my all. I was genuinely nervous that I wouldn’t be able to ensure the same commitment with a small person in tow.
As many would attest, being a freelancer is a blessing and a curse. I have the freedom to attend activities like Bush Playgroup with my girls or take a six-week summer break. But work follows me everywhere and, with the budgets I spend on behalf of my clients plus the expectations I place on myself, switching off isn’t easy.
I recall when Goldie was crawling, I’d pop her at one end of the hallway then race to the other to send a work email; when she caught up with me, I’d repeat the process. Luckily most of my clients are at ease with my juggle, and are happy to take calls after hours.
Work has been incredible – at last count, I had close to 20 projects on the go. Things really turned a corner when I employed my design assistant, Sarah Shinners; she’s allowed me to take time to work on my business, not just in it. I try very hard to provide a high level of customer service, and having Sarah assist with client support and supplier liaison has been a game changer.
Just back from a sourcing trip to New York, about to move into a shared space with Fred International, a new focus on high-end residential, plus a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair in April – you’re besieged but in a good way. Do you have any advice for other parents on career expansion with kids?
I found The Mother’s Mind Cleanse by The Broad Place an excellent tool. It encourages banishing words like ‘busy’ for phrases like ‘I am engaged in some exciting projects,’ and reframing the idea of ‘juggling’ with mantras such as ‘these are the moments that make up the hours, that make up the day, that are my life.’
I’ve also learnt I need to schedule time for me. In the early days, the guilt I felt about working meant I spent every non-billable moment with my babies – which was like having two full-time jobs (on very little sleep!). On my work days, finding balance can be as simple as coming home to have a shower, make a cuppa, and take a moment before crèche pick-up; it helps so much with compartmentalising my dual roles. I also try to make time for health and wellbeing, be it a Pilates class, health retreat, or dinner with the girls.
I would say the way to expand your career is to surround yourself with people who know more than you do; I am in the process of working with a business manager/mentor, and I can’t wait to see things through her eyes. Also try not to track what your competitors are doing – it will only spark insecurity. Rely instead on intuition, and realise at the end of the day what we do should be joyful.
Your Melbourne and Philip Island homes count among the most popular we’ve featured on TDF. Has your aesthetic changed at all since Clover and Goldie arrived on the scene, and is there anything you’ve had to sacrifice, or come to appreciate?
I won’t lie, I was a little scared pre-baby, but by the time you come out of that initial fog, you’re re-wired to lean into it. We have a cleaner once a week who restores balance, but what happens in-between is not a bother to me – as long as I can see the floor at the end of the day. Our house is not abundant with kid’s stuff, and when I do have a guilty shop for toys, they tend to be tossed aside for playtime in the garden anyway.
One thing I find interesting is the ‘we will wait until the children grow up and then buy such and such’ mentality. My advice would be to instil respect from the get go; invest in the pieces you love, and teach your kids the boundaries around those pieces. I’ve an open shelf full of ceramics, and the more special pieces are that little bit out of reach, but the girls rarely notice they are there.
I have come to appreciate our over-sized Carl Hansen Wing chair which has room for us all and, funnily enough, I can’t think of a thing we’ve sacrificed per se. Now that the house is feeling a little small (with the queue for the toilet a little long), we’ve engaged our friends at Kennedy Nolan to help us with creative solutions to expand on what we already have – and it’s all being rolled out by Design Orr Build as we speak. My aesthetic is changing all the time, and for the renovation I’m bringing back some vintage Italian pieces – I can’t wait to share some work-in-progress pics on Instagram!
Can you give us a glimpse into how your days start and end with Clover and Goldie?
I am not a morning person, so they never start early. One or both girls will make it into bed with me, and I’ll try every trick in the book to get a little more sleep. Breakfast involves porridge and a dance party and, because it’s almost impossible to get yourself and two toddlers ready for the day, I’m generally bra-less and in trackies for the bi-weekly crèche drop-off. I then head home to prepare for work – so much easier without two thigh-huggers bickering over the equal distribution of sultanas!
I very much look forward to the end-of-day routine, which is why I can count the number of times I’ve been out for dinner in the last three years on one hand. Our dining table has, up until now, served as my desk – so we often eat around the kiddy table (this always makes me giggle). I like a bath with the babies at the end of the day (until it all goes south when one of them does a number two), and like most parents enjoy the sound of silence when they go down. After that, I pick up some magazines, and start what we affectionately term ‘the night shift.’
Moving across time, what kind of adults might you like the girls to grow into? How would you like them to remember you to their own families?
Kind, inquisitive, and soulful. I would like them to remember that cuddles were a never-ending resource, and that growing up with a dog the size of a horse was normal.
Family Favourites
Clothing brand
Hubble + Duke is a favourite for the little ladies in my life.
Bedroom item
A new use for an old item. As mentioned, we’re renovating, so the girls are sharing which is all sorts of fun – particularly when the baby monitor lets us listen in to what they ‘chat’ about before sleep.
Activity or outing
Heading to our beach house on weekends; the girls play shop in their cubby house by Castle and Cubby.
Dinner destination
We’re very happy with a picnic dinner in the backyard. The girls think it’s fun, but it’s really my way of avoiding wiping the high chairs and sweeping the floors again!
Book, film or show
The girls love any Disney film where there’s a red-headed heroine, a bit of Pig the Pug, and putting on their own shows for the ‘grown nuts.’

Spectacular failure

Blog 6
Ah, the glorious minor charrette. I honestly did not know what to except when going in. I mean, “It’s just responding to a brief, right?” Oh boy, it’s funny how you don’t realise how bad something is going until its done.
So, this week we completed the minor charrette where groups of 5 were formed to respond to a brief, which was “UrBNE Stories.” The task was to come up with an innovative concept to meaningfully engage people in sharing stories, create its brand, manifestations and experience, and plan a campaign for promotion. This was to be completed within two hours before presenting a 5-minute-long presentation outlining the design concept, visual concept, and a 1 minute video. Wow, actually writing down the task makes into seem so much more difficult.
Once the time started and a group was formed, we started concepting straight away. However, one thing started to become apparent, at least to me. Every concept developed was disliked by at least one other group member. Which is to be expected since none of us had met before. However, this became a problem, because originally, we planned for 20 minutes of concepting. But then 20 minutes became one and a half hours. By this time we had no choice but to stick to the idea we currently had. And so began the half an hour of desperation. We quickly assigned jobs before whacking together the fastest last minute presentation ever.
I was rather impressed in how fast we pulled it all together. But then it was time, and better yet, we forgot our video. We quickly scrammed to make one, however couldn’t stop laughing during the video. It came to the point where we thought just to make the presentation longer so the video is cut off on our time.
And just like that, it was all out of our hands. All we could now do was sell the idea and hope. And honestly, as we presented it, it didn’t quite sound as bad as I thought. Nevertheless, still a failure. I don’t think two hours has taught me so much. I mean I’ve always struggled with time management, but I’d always get it done in the end. This, the minor charrette, I would not call done.
Anyways, was the point of failing if you don’t learn something from it. The Minor charrette taught me many things which include:
·        First and foremost, HAVE A LEADER. There is no point of doing something if everyone in the group is either a worker or a leader. Sure, everyone can pitch in with concepts, but if no one takes charge, nothing is accomplished.
·        Understand your colleagues BEFORE working with them. Make sure you know how they think, their views and motives. This way you can agree more and argue less.
·        Manage your TIME. When time is against you the simple yet overlooked solution is to manage it. Even though managing time consumes some of it, it will keep you and your group on track
·        Finally, DROP YOUR FIRST IDEA. This one is hard, but you must do it. Your first idea may be the greatest thing on earth, but others may hate it. Your first idea is probably, A: already done, B: Underdeveloped or C: Just not effective. You learn more from your first idea then your final. Also, be sure that you drop the idea altogether, don’t branch off it say things like “Oh, but what if,” or “Hey this part could work.” Trust me it won’t
Perhaps these are crazy opinions, heck I’m not too sure I haven’t tried any of them yet. But these are the things that didn’t work for me. The Minor Charrette was definition interesting to say the least.

Data without analytics is data not yet realised (interview)
Dr Jim Goodnight, co-founder and chief executive of SAS, has been at the helm for the past 41 years. Under his guidance and some very astute management philosophies, the company has become the largest privately owned, pure-play company in the big data and analytics space. And according to industry analysts’ reports, it’s also very much a leader in predictive analytics and machine learning solutions. Throughout the Forum Dr Goodnight's name was used in revered tones. As Oliver Schabenberger, executive vice-president and chief technology officer said, “It may be SAS.com but it is really Jim.Goodnight.com – he has had such an amazing influence on the company”. Goodnight admits SAS is now a little too big for him to totally oversee and he has selected some excellent VPs. How long will he continue? “As long as I am having fun and can make a difference,” he responded. He is currently the head of an education task force with the chief executives of the Business Roundtable. There, he is focusing on helping children learn to read. He was interviewed during the recent SAS Global Forum. What are some of the biggest changes you have seen over the past 40 years? After leaving the university environment all we hoped was to make it through the next year! That SAS has thrived and grown each year is a testament to the foresight, the corporate philosophy, and great people. In 2016, SAS made US$3.2 billion, had over 83,000 customers and over 14,000 employees. SAS was doing analytics before it was cool. It can do so much more to effect change for good. We are in the age of Analytics 4.0 and over 40 years we have had to reinvent ourselves on average every ten years. We started in 1969 writing in PL/1 for IBM 360 mainframes. Ten years later SAS needed to run on Vax/DG minicomputers. Ten years after that – 1989 - was the beginnings of democratisation of computing with the 16-bit IBM PC so we went there too. Now it is all about the cloud. That meant a fundamental rewrite using C language and that was to become a real strength as it supported all platforms. One version of SAS and portability to different operating systems was way ahead of its time. It also marked the move of analytics to the data – we were able to use massively parallel PCs to give us the memory and processing capacity. The next big change was the coming of the cloud and Viya is a cloud extension of SAS 9.4. It is for big tasks – high-performance analytics. It is both a superset and subset of SAS 9.4 – both platforms will continue to develop and interoperate but Viya allows you to use the power of the cloud – you can get up to 3 billion instructions per second and work on much larger data sets. The next evolution is definitely about the rise of the machines. Analytics is not standing still – Machine learning (ML), Deep learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), advances in insights, algorithmic intelligence, automation, and more. Classic ML is data driven. Modern ML is where the algorithm acquires new skills by itself and that is where we are heading.
Oliver Schabenberger said we need to be careful not to label ML as AI. Is that your corporate direction?
Yes, our version of ML is about algorithms acquiring new skills. There is no computer powerful enough today to build the neural networks and approach AI status. Oliver called it algorithmic intelligence and that is more accurate.
As computer hardware increases in power and storage, what does that mean to SAS?
SAS has always had more capability than the machines it runs on so we welcome technology advances. Bigger, faster, more powerful hardware is good for SAS. It means we can solve bigger tougher problems. SAS capabilities still exceed even the biggest, fastest hardware of today.
The cloud is interesting as it potentially can link every computer together so bigger problems can be solved – That is Viya’s direction.
Tell me more about SAS visualisation techniques?
In the past analytical uses of data tended to be relatively flat – crosstabs and graphs could represent it.
Today data is multi-dimensional – you add your data to other sources and it is simply beyond human comprehension to think multi-dimensionally. Visualisation takes you so far but we need ML to reveal those hidden linkages and reveal insights.
Over the past 40 years we have seen visualisation go from standard X, Y charts to dashboards and scorecards but frankly these do not work for dimensional data – its big data in overdrive.
SAS uses a bucketing system to compress thousands of data points into perhaps 50 important ones that we can understand. We think that democratising visualisation techniques is where we can make the most difference to uncovering new insights – opening it up to everyone – not just data scientists.
You demonstrated on stage accessing SAS via Alexa. Is that the next logical step in analytics?
Anything that helps humans interact with data and analytics is a good step. By the way, SAS works with Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant and Bixby too. But these are nothing more than digital assistants and we think the “miss” rate is way too high for analytical use.
We plan to have our own analytics focused voice engine that will understand data, analytics and SAS.
Is SAS’s commitment to education a big overhead?
It has never been regarded as such. I think most CEOs of large companies have that responsibility. It takes the CEO to at least approve doing something like this.
We need to get people talking about analytics – data at rest is data not realised. Let’s just say that some 63 Universities now offer Masters Degrees in Advanced Analytics and 144 certifications. Between SAS University Edition and SAS OnDemand for Academics, there have been more than 1 million registrations and downloads of free SAS software for teaching, learning and research.
SAS training in Australia is the equal of any offered in the world and its certification program is recognised globally. Our commitment means that SAS is synonymous with analytics and people get well-paying jobs.
Where is SAS heading?
If analytics is the engine of change, data is the fuel. The opportunity is enormous and we need to bring analytics everywhere.
SAS has grown so much from my original vision, not in the technology sense but its uses. We can help analyse sports performance, reduce credit and financial fraud, address cyber security, solve marketing issues, reduce child abuse/neglect, use crowdsourcing (Gather IQ) to solve humanitarian issues, and one new area is Results as a Service to enable everyone to access SAS and pay for results.
The next decade of development is about machine learning, algorithmic intelligence, IoT and the masses of new data we will see generated by things like autonomous cars. I think there will be a move from using analytics in a reactive mode to a proactive mode – real-time.
Meanwhile, we will be looking 20 years ahead to begin to address emerging issues.

The writer attended the SAS Global Forum in Orlando, Florida, as a guest of the company.

My 2016 - videogames played
In 2016, I kept a record of what media I consumed, with a short record of my thoughts about some of them (one or two sentences only).
This is every videogame I played for longer than 30 minutes, and some of the games I spent less than that with.
This is part five of my 2016 retrospective. The other parts:
games I made
books I read
podcasts I listened to
films/TV I watched
videogames I played
boardgames I played
January
Imbroglio (beta) Ushered in the new year by playing this until 4am.
Patchmania Cute presentation but I'm never going to sit through hundreds of easy levels to get to the interesting ones.
Kaodoku Just as mind-numbing as normal Sodoku, and that's not a compliment.
Streamline (beta) Initially seems samey but there's a nice combination of mechanics here.
Land Sliders Nice UI, but unexciting game.
Divide By Sheep Seems like a puzzle game that doesn't take forever to get interesting?! Shame about the linear level structure and inability to queue moves up, but overall this was really enjoyable.
Go To Gold 2 The puzzles themselves seem like decent Sokoban-with-pressure-plates levels. But the controls are really bad, which exacerbates the tediousness of Sokoban.
Inch By Inch Nice idea, but the controls give no feedback for when you can move, which feels awful. Also a very ungenerous F2P lives system.
Does Not Commute Fun and full of flavour.
Luminare Surprisingly interesting for a short while, but quickly becomes samey.
Churchill Solitaire It's solitaire.
The Witness It's a shame that the most impressive part of this game is not also the most interesting. Overall I had a good time with this game, but towards the end my feelings soured somewhat.
February
CLARC [first three levels] Nice graphics but terrible writing and I don't have confidence that the puzzles will get interesting.
These Robotic Hearts of Mine [my own game] The damning problem with this is that finding optimal solutions is so encouraged, but largely uninteresting and a waste of time. If you ignore that part it might be okay as a storygame though?
At Dawn, Pistols Now that I think about it, I realise that the turnips/pumpkin controller doesn't fit the framing of this game at all.
Worlds Fastest Pizza Did a good job of making me not sure how much stuff there is to do.
The Greatest Voice of All A well-scoped jam game. Has some niggles, but overall it's fun.
DANCE DOOM Without strafing, this is really awkward. Entertaining to watch though.
Snow Cones Ridiculously cute.
Killing Time at Lightspeed Great concept! Not much resolution at the end though.
Skorpulac Ugh, it has a lives system :(
Swing Copters 2 I played for 15 minutes and didn't score higher than 1.
Arrowance Fairly standard play-indefinitely-to-score-higher game. Doesn't seem to get any harder over time.
Induction (beta) Smart time travel puzzle game! Sometimes hard to reason about, but worth playing.
Tomb of the Mask This would be great if it didn't have a permanent global points multiplier that makes scores meaningless.
PUSER TOH Nice idea.
March
Rust Bucket New levels introduce some interesting enemy types but could do with more checkpoints. Roguelike mode seems mostly unchanged in the early stages, which is maybe a shame.
Blackbox: think outside the box Seemed like an okay implementation of the "every puzzle is a different system to work out" thing, but I never felt compelled to go back to it after a very brief play.
Tacoma (beta) Main takeaway: it's cool to watch conversations split/rejoin. I've not played either, but it felt very much in the vein of Gone Home/Firewatch.
20something Hard to tell how close the fiction is to being autobiography, but it doesn't really matter. The end result is something that feels very real.
Unnamed Pokemon-like game from unnamed team (preview) Lotsa numbers, not really my thing.
Discharge Looks great for a jam game. Level design wasn't great at teaching what you're trying to do a lot of the time though.
BBTAN I played this for about 10 seconds before putting it down in disgust.
Semispheres (preview)
Metareal (preview)
PSHNGGG! This is really great but I uncontrollably grip the controller so hard that it's physically painful to play more than a few games in a row. This is the only game that has caused this problem, and I think is a sign of how engaging it is.
Knittens
Armed and gelatinous
Lazy Village
Planetary capacity
It's spring again
Wibble wobble
Orchids to dust
Lumini Very pleasant.
Please stand by So dumb and so entertaining.
Hello, operator!
Linelight
Octobo
Rotator
Planet licker
Palimseste
Threadsteading A strategy game played on an embroidery machine, in theory about claiming tiles but in practice more about denying them to your opponent. One of my best GDC anecdotes was the cliffhanger when the machine ran out of thread in the middle of sewing the scores.
Disc jockey jockey
Wiz
Dobotone
Von Neumann personality test
Mr Heart Loves You Very Much Nice mechanic.
Redder Good level design, a solid exploration of toggle switches and one-way systems.
Decodoku
West of Loathing (beta)
Journey of 1000 stars
Dungeon of the Endless Seemed to be easing me into it gently, up until I tried to move on to level 2 and got massacred on the journey there. Not my kind of thing.
Abzorb I want it to control like Helix, and the fact that it doesn't apparently makes this kinda unplayable for me.
Two Interviewees Not very subtle, but that helps get its message across I guess.
April
Mario Kart 64 I haven't really enjoyed dipping into any of the more recent Mario Karts, but this was enjoyable enough. One big difference is that less focus on drifting makes for a much more accessible game.
forget-me-not I gather from hearsay that playing well is all about grinding, but I found that kinda awkward with touch controls.
No Pineapple Left Behind
Say When
DivCircle
Dolfin Trash
Four Horsemen
Get Lost!
Telefrag
Niña Nueve Some "wait around for something to move slowly to the right place" tedium, but otherwise fairly stylish.
Pretender to the Crown Lots of puzzles! And nice graphical touches
Clickmazes BoxUp Nice idea, but maybe a bit too prone to "just do the only thing that doesn't make things unsolvable" syndrome.
Net I wouldn't want to do a larger size, but with edge-wrap even a 5x5 grid is surprisingly challenging.
Isles of Color Nice concept but ends up being more focused on backtracking than hard puzzles. Worth looking at as an example of exploring the intersection of mechanics.
Craequ I guess I can't ever relive the experience of playing it for the first time. Still neat, but short; I can't help but wish for harder puzzles.
Helix This game is crack to me. Everything about it just feels right.
Mammoth Monkey Mole Levels are too big, controls are too awkward.
Slayaway Camp (beta) Lovely theming of an otherwise not particularly novel game, but then it ruins it with "tap the grave for coins". Hopefully that'll be removed for the actual release.
PRISM Feels a bit like a more abstract/geometrical The Room. Satisfying, but not very challenging so far.
PROMESST Would be much more comfortable with a better map. When the midpoint hits, it hits hard and intimidatingly; I don't think I got much past that point the first time I played either.
Wobble Yoga Nice QWOP-like, though the shape detection could have been better.
shapeshit Really hard! That shape in the top left really doesn't want to be hit.
Stephen's Sausage Roll Even the tutorial area would be a great game on its own, and then it just keeps asking more and more and more of you.
Hanano Puzzle The less-well-known fiendishly hard game from the creator of Jelly No Puzzle. After a rough first level it's not so bad so far though (up to level 25).
Jelly No Puzzle Also not that bad!
Fish Fillets NG I just bounce straight off this level design: too-big levels, too-fiddly object shuffling. I remember trying it before but I'm not any more likely to stick with it second time round.
Chairs This is based on some chemistry principle but it didn't succeed in teaching me anything.
Tripad
Anamorphine
Sec9
100ft Robot Golf
Loud on Planet X
Ape Out
Bound
Swing Star VR
Not Everything is Flammable
Yesteryear
Marble Madness 2
May
Budget Cuts Only having one checkpoint felt punishing but it probably wouldn't have been that bad if I was playing in a home context. Really nice UI.
Robot Heist Nice ending.
Quick drop
Block swap
Cupkins
Balloon buoyancy
Sky rogue
Uh oh love comes to town
Hue
Windowframe One of the best puzzle platformer twists that's happened for a long while. Shame it has to use fake windows though, and I'm way more into the puzzley side than the action side.
ᗢ Cute! 1.5 years after playing I'll hear from the creator that some of my games inspired it, which is cool.
SHRUBNAUT
Cavern of Flight Some people will go "nope nope nope" because of the enemies, but they're pretty well done. I didn't get far due to the unforgiving time-pressure platforming.
There is no game I've played this before, but it's really well done.
June
A Rose for Icy Heart
The Maître D' This is fantastic themeing, good art and sounds, pretty solid work for a jam. Unfortunately it's let down by level design, there's too many levels and they're all kinda samey.
Size Matters Not sure how far I got, I bounced off an execution challenge level that felt way too finnicky.
Morphblade
Experiment 26 Incredibly disjointed, it gets slightly less so towards the end but probably not enough so for me to recommend. I think it could have done with more application of "yes and".
Time machine VR [first two missions] underwhelming to be promised time travel but then get the second mission be indistinguishable from the first
Lands end [first two chapters] soothing, not hard but I didn't really mind
Audioshield Does what you want it to.
The Lab The robot repair demo was significantly shorter than I was expecting.
pico park
Quasi
Dark Souls I think this caused longterm damage to my hands, and yet I can't entirely regret my time with it.
July
The Temple of No
Leap Day
One Last Cup (preview) Ridiculously ambitious.
39 Days to Mars (preview)
Modulus
August
Duck Roll Decent mechanics, but the difficulty curve is basically flat and it has a move counter :( Touchscreen controls aren't great either, but I still played most of the way through.
Overcooked
Puzzlepops Good thinky puzzle game.
Spaceplan First idle game I've played in ages, probably the last in a while too but it was fun enough. Nice aesthetic design.
Pole riders
Vacuum Really neat interconnected-world puzzle game! Lovely theming and attention to detail.
September
Fathom
4fourths
Multibowl
Super hexagon
Samurai gunn
Wibble wobble
October
Game Title A nice interconnected puzzle.
Life is Strange Lows: some time travel inconsistencies, not being able to rewind to mid-conversation, some really tedious filler content. Highs: overall good pacing and cliffhangers, good characters, I'm glad I got around to playing it.
Circles (beta)
Shadow Bug Rush Not my kind of thing.
Really Bad Chess I wish this didn't take so long to calculate AI moves, it makes it kinda unplayable on my old iPad.
Mallow Drops (beta) Too samey for my tastes
Game Title: Lost Levels Really neat interconnected puzzle about exploiting glitches.
The Trials Short and simple puzzle game.
Disorient on the murder express
Redirection
Four floors of doors (preview)
Snake pass (preview)
Mordheim
Sure footing
November
So Broken
min! Not my kind of thing.
Spider's Hollow Solid PuzzleScript game.
Integer Snake Not my kind of thing.
Knot Fun Nice enough idea, not much there though.
Sara Is Missing
December
Lara Croft GO Prettier than Hitman GO, and thankfully gets rid of "do it in x moves" challenges. Not as hard as I'd like, but enjoyable enough to keep playing.
WitchWay (beta) Cute, neat, wish the secrets were more puzzley though.
Blocky XMAS Decent version of the "Sokoban + things stick together" genre
Rose
Induction (beta)
Klocki Slooooow start which was very tedious, but gets more interesting.
Nest (watched) I can't tell if there's something I'm missing or if it's really just asking you to do what it seems like it's asking you to do.
The Last Guardian (watched)
Blarp!
Xortex
Firewatch (watched) Beautiful world, but plot didn't really come together for me.
Boats Cars & Trains
Noleap
Hanano Puzzle 2 Good set of levels for a game I already liked.
Tiny Heist Really solid stealth roguelike. Happily rung in the new year while playing it.
