“Thanks for this.” You said, gesturing to your wrist that was fractured. 

Klaus smiled at you with loving eyes. “No problem, love.”

He finished pouring his blood into a cup, handing it to you. You took the cup gratefully, holding your breath as you drank his blood. Your wrist healed almost immediately. 

“Being a hybrid must be really helpful.” You chuckled, moving your wrist around now that it had mobility again. 

“It is. I can change you, you know,” Klaus suggested. 

You smiled and shook your head. “No, I like being human. I want kids and to live a normal life.” “You can never live a normal life when you have me in your life, love,” Klaus smirked. You looked into his baby blue eyes, getting lost in them quickly. 

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

Klaus put his hand on your cheek, looking deep into your eyes. Butterflies irrupted in your tummy as your eyes trialed down to his lips. As you both started to lean in, but a voice interrupted you.

“Hey, Y/n, I- Oh, sorry.”

You turned your head, feeling Klaus’s hand fall from your face. Your eyes widened as you saw Kai standing in the entry way of your room, holding a first-aid kit. 

“I see you’re healed,” Kai said, nodding to your wrist that wasn’t bruised anymore. 

You coughed awkwardly, “Um, yeah. Klaus healed me.”

Kai glared at Klaus, who happened to be smirking at Kai. “I thought you, uh, didn’t like playing with magic?”

“Well, I needed it healed quick. I have college assignments to do and vampires to fight.” You gave him a grin . 

Kai nodded, smiling with you.” Right, right. Well, hey, I have food if you’re hungry.”

You shot up from your seat. “Yes, I am starving. Thank you, Kai.” You waked past him to get to the kitchen, your hands brushing against each other in the process. 

Tingles ran up your arm and down your spine. Your eyes snapped up to Kai’s. His eyes became a little brighter as he looked at you. The corners of your lips twitched upwards as Kai took your hand in his. He leaned down to your ear, his breath tickling your skin. 

“You can do so much better, Y/n,” Kai whispered. His low voice put another set of butterflies in your stomach, just like the ones Klaus had put. But these were stronger, more nerve-racking.

You ignored his words, giving him a warning look, and walking away to the kitchen. 

The two men had serious feelings for you, which was flattering, but also unlucky for you. You also had feelings for both of them. It wasn’t always like this, though.

Months ago, you and Klaus are together. You were both in love, planning to get married even just after three months of dating. You swore you had never met anybody like him until you met Kai. You meeting Kai wasn’t the deciding factor that ended your relationship. There were a lot of personal issues that led you to break it off, but it didn’t help that Kai was right there, ready to pick up the pieces of your broken heart.

It had been five months since Kai entered your life and Klaus and you broke up. You hadn’t dated anyone since then, and you weren’t sure if the next person you dated would be them. It was all too complicated. Klaus was still your best friend. You two were best friends before you started dating. You didn’t want to throw that away.

Kai was more like that type of friend that was always a maybe. You never had to ask yourself “maybe” with Klaus. You knew straight on that you loved him and wanted to be with him. It was different with Kai, though. Not only because he came into your life at a difficult time, but you weren’t sure if you really did love him, or if your heart happened to cling to the closest person who gave you emotional support.

You were in a bit of a pickle.

“They didn’t have the cheese you liked, sorry.” Kai walked into the kitchen. 

“No problem.” You shrugged, taking one of the sandwiches Kai had picked up for you from Jimmy John’s.

“So, when does your break end?” Kai asked. 

“This Monday,” you answered. 

“Hm, cool,” Kai said. “Do you want to go to the fair tonight?”

“Sure,” you smiled. 

“Great! Man, I haven’t been to the fair in years,” Kai said. 

“Me, neither,” you chuckled and took a bite out of your sandwich. 

“Do you want to bring Elena and Damon?” Kai asked. “It could be a double date.” “I think they’re gonna spend the weekend in before we have to go back to school. Pretty sure their plans involve lots of sex,” you chuckled. 

“Oh, fun. You know, we can do that, too,” Kai smirked. 

You rolled your eyes with a smile, “Very funny, Kai.”

It was comments like that that made it especially difficult to decide on your feelings for Kai. To you, it should’ve been black or white, but you had a bunch of gray area. Did you really like him? Was he just an crutch to help you get over Klaus? If you two started dating, would it even work out? All these questions swirled in your head, you started to have a headache.

“I’m serious! I am very good with my fingers,” Kai said, holding up his hand and moving his fingers around, drawing attention to them.

You looked at his hand, your eyes scanning over his long, slender fingers. It wasn’t the first time dirty thoughts had entered your mind about him. Kai was a very suggestive person, and had been from the very start. He always left you wondering and wanting.

“Whatcha thinking’ about?” He smirked, noticing the dazed look on your face.  You looked up to his eyes, which were dark and lustful. “Nothing.”

“You sure?” He asked, running his tongue over his top lip. 

“Yep,” you sighed. “I am going to finish my sandwich in peace.” Kai frowned, “Wait, no. Don’t go.”

You smiled, “Alright, but you’ll have to follow me. I’m going over to the living room.”

Kai nodded and followed you to the couch. There, you saw Klaus already sitting on the couch, looking at his phone. 

“Oh, you’re here,” Kai frowned. 

Klaus looked up form his phone, grinning. “Yes, I am. What are you still doing here.”

“Keeping Y/n company for lunch. She doesn’t need you here,” Kai remarked. 

You rolled your eyes, “Stop fighting, guys.”

Kai and Klaus looked at each other, then at you apologetically. 

“Sorry,” they both muttered. 

You took a few bites of your sand which, deciding that you didn’t need to stand in the awkward silence. “I’m going to get ready for tonight.”

“What’s tonight?” Klaus asked. 

“I’m going to the fair with Kai.”

The sad look on his face had your heart aching. You didn’t want to sugarcoat it. You hated beating around the bush, especially when the information wasn’t a big deal. But it was a big deal to Klaus. As his best friend, it was your job to attempt to make him happy.

“Caroline and Bonnie are coming with us,” you added.

Kai shot you a glare. You gave him a don’t look and turned back to Klaus.

Klaus perked up at the mention of Caroline. “Can I come, too, since Caroline is coming?”

You nodded, “Don’t see why not.”

You couldn’t lie, you were a little hurt. Could anyone blame you? Caroline was the girl-next-door-type that Klaus had fallen in love with only a couple weeks after your breakup. You knew Klaus didn’t like to wallow, but you thought he would’ve been more heartbroken. You knew you were.

But you two weren’t together. What you were feeling was unjust. Klaus was allowed to have feelings for other women, just like you were allowed to have feelings for other men.

“Great! I’m going to get ready, too. I can’t wait,” Klaus smiled. “I’ll see you later!” He walked out of your house with a jump in his step.

Kai turned to you, a sympathetic smile on his face. His hand took yours and intertwined your fingers.

“You deserve someone you doesn’t fall in love with people left and right.”

You frowned, “He doesn’t do that.”

Kai shrugged, feeling entitled to his opinion. “Caroline’s a prime example of that.”

“Well, we aren’t together so it doesn’t matter. Plus, I have someone on my mind, too,” you winked.

And there was your answer. You did like Kai.

“Wonder who that could be?” He hummed teasingly.

You giggled, “I’m gonna get ready. I’ll see you tonight.”

“I’ll pick you up at six,” he said. “Can’t wait.” You leaned up and pressed your lips to his cheek. You held yourself there for a seconds before pulling away slowly, holding eye contact until the very last moment.

He let out a shaky breath. He wasn’t the only one with game.

He left your house and you immediately hopped in the shower. 6 o'clock came quickly, but you were glad. You were excited for this night out. Ever since college, you hadn’t had one of these in a while — one that didn’t include fighting vampires.

You grabbed your purse and jacket. A knock sounded at your door, making your heart race.

You walked to your front door quickly, swinging the it open. Kai appeared at the door, holding a bouquet of dahlia’s. You smiled gratefully, taking them from him.

“You look beautiful,” Kai smiled. 

“Thank you. You didn’t have to get me these,” you smiled, gesturing to the flowers. 

“Well, you know me. I am quite the romantic,” Kai smiled. 

You laughed and nodded. “Let me put these in a vase.”

Kai nodded, watching your retreating figure walk to the kitchen. You came out with a clear vase filled with water, sticking the flowers inside gently. You set the vase on your living room table, standing back and admiring how they looked. After a few moments, you turned back to Kai. 

“Ready?” You asked. 

“Yep,” Kai nodded. He held his hand out, to which you took with a grin. 

Kai walked you to his car, opening the door for you to get in. You thanked him with a smile, him going over to the driver’s seat. Kai drove you two in a comfortable silence. You two arrived at the fair and walked to the ticket stand. You started to get out your credit card, but Kai stopped you.

“I invited you here, let me buy the ticket,” he said. 

“I’ll buy the snacks, then?” You suggested. 

“Sure,” Kai nodded. 

Kai bought the wristbands, choosing the unlimited deal so you could ride as many rides as many times as you pleased.

As you two walked into the entrance, you spotted Klaus with Caroline and Bonnie. Your eyes lingered at Klaus’s arm around Caroline. This was a big surprise to you as Caroline claimed she hated Klaus. Maybe he made a deal with her for the night.

Kai wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you close to him. He leaned down to your ear and whispered, “Is this okay?”

You nodded, leaning into him more as he was radiating warmth. It felt nice in the cool spring air.

You two approached the group of three, Bonnie and Caroline smirking as they noticed Kai’s arm around you very territorial-like. 

“Hey, love birds!” Caroline chirped, moving out of Klaus’s grasp. “Ready to eat lots of candy and throw up?”

You laughed, “You know it.”

Klaus looked over you, smiling. “You look nice, Y/n.”

“Thank you.” You gave him a polite smile, looking back at Kai. “What ride do you want to do first?”

“Hm, I wanna start off big. Let’s go and do Cheese Craze,” Kai smiled. 

You looked over to the rollercoaster ride, which had the seats look like the body of a mouse, and it chasing a block of cheese. 

“Alright, sounds good,” Bonnie said. You five walked to the long line of people. 

Kai had kept his arm around your waist at all times, keeping his eye on Klaus. You noticed the tension between the two and decided to seperate them for the time being. 

“Someone wanna go and get some cotton candy while we wait? The line is pretty long,” you laughed, trying to lighten the mood.

“I’ll go,” Klaus answered before Kai could. 

You breathed out in distress, nodding slowly. “Alright. Um, text me when you guys are close to getting a ride.” “Have fun,” Bonnie winked. 

You rolled your eyes at her, smiling a little. Klaus and you left to go to one of the food stands. 

“I must say, I never pinned you to be a fan of roller coasters,” Klaus smiled. 

You chuckled, “Well, I am full of surprised.”

“So it seems. How did I not know this about when we dated?” He wondered.

“You never took me to the fair, I guess,” you shrugged.

“Maybe I should’ve,” he mumbled.

You stayed silent, not sure what to say. You didn’t want to reminisce about your relationship with him. Not tonight, and honestly, not ever. You still loved him, but you were ready for a new chapter of your life. A new chapter with Kai.

“You and Caroline look good together.” You complimented, sounding genuine.

“Thanks,” he replied flatly.

It was so awkward between you two. It always got like this when you talked about each other’s new partners. You changed the subject.

“When are you going back to New Orleans?” You asked.

“In a few weeks. Elijah is holding the fort down while I’m here,” he answered.

“When you see him, tell him I said hi. Is Bex still there?” You asked.

“She’s somewhere with Marcel.”

“Did they get married yet?”

“Not sure. She doesn’t tell anyone anything,” he rolled his eyes.

“Well, if you see her, tell her I miss her and to come to Mystic Falls. We can hang out during summer break,” you beamed.

He smiled at your grin. “I will.”

You two got a few cups of lemonade and a bag of cotton candy. You walked back to the line, still having to wait a few more moments. You set your food down on the side, having Kai put an invisibility spell so no one would steal it.

You sat in-between Klaus and Kai. You laughed to yourself. Of course this is what the universe had planned for you.

As the ride started, you gripped the handle bars that were keeping you all in. The seat started to move backwards slowly, then swaying from side to side harshly, making you lean into Klaus. 

Klaus put his hand on yours that was resting on the bar, making you look up at him. You gave him a frown and you moved your hand away. It wasn’t fair he played these games, especially with his date sitting across from you.

The ride started to move up slowly, spinning around so now you, Bonnie, and Klaus were facing the front. Your eyes widened as you saw you were riding up a big hill. 

“Everyone put your hands up!” Caroline exclaimed. 

You held your arms up, screaming you flew down the track. Your stomach dropped as the ride climbed back up, slowing down immediately. The ride continued with more spinning and a few steep drops before it stopped. 

You all walked away a little dizzy.

“I never remembered being this dizzy when I was a kid,” Bonnie sighed.

“Old age,” you groaned. “Being a vampire can help you fix that,” Klaus grinned.

“Yeah, no thanks,” you snorted.

“Your joints are fine! Let’s go to the next one!” Caroline exclaimed.

“Says the vampire,” Bonnie remarked.

You and Kai intertwined hands as you followed Caroline to the next ride. You sipped on your lemonade while you waited for the next ride.

“Wanna do the kissing booth?” Kai asked.

“Where’s that?” You asked, looking around.

He pointed to the pink exhibit on the other side of the fair.

“Oh, it’s a ride?” You gasped. “Yep, and we get to kiss in it.” Kai wiggled his eyebrows.

“Say no more!” You giggled.

You and Kai left your friends to hang out with each other for the rest of the night.

“They never had this kind of ride when I was a kid,” Kai stated as you two hopped in the ride.

“I always forget you were born like, a hundred years ago,” you chuckled.

“I would only be 43 if I didn’t get put in the prison world!” Kai scoffed with a smile.

You grinned, “Good thing you got put in there then, otherwise you wouldn’t be doing this with me.”

“I guess some good things came out of it,” he agreed.

You put your head on his shoulder as the ride started. It was a little bit cheesy, but you enjoyed it nonetheless. The inside of the ride was full with pink hearts, small twists and turns, and a big camera at the end that had a banner attached to it saying Kiss Time!

The air suddenly felt thick between you two. You swallowed hard as you looked at his lips. They looked so soft. After all this time wondering how they would fell on yours, this was finally your chance.

He leaned in slowly, snaking his arm around your waist and resting his hand on your thigh. You reached your arms up to his neck and clasped your hands. You scoffed closer to him and that was the last movement you needed to kiss him.

His lips were so soft and fit yours so well. You moved closer to him, pressing your chest up against his. You opened your mouth as you kissed him, allowing him to French kiss you. You let out a breathy sigh and gripped the hair at the nape of his neck. This was perfect.

The camera clicking made you two jump apart. You let out a shy laugh, turning away from him and facing the exit of the ride.

“That was amazing,” Kai whispered. You grinned, “It was.”

You each took copies of the pictures. Kai put it in his wallet and you decided to put it on your wall when you got back to college.

“I had a great time,” you smiled.

“I’m glad. I did, too.” Kai opened the car door and helped you out. He walked you up to the door with his hand in yours.

“So, when’s the next date?” You asked.

Kai chuckled, “You can choose this time.”

“Great. I’ll let you know when.” You leaned up and kissed his lips. You breathed in deeply, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and pulling you flush against him. He smiled into the kiss at your rough actions. He wrapped his arms around your back, gripping your jacket and holding your tighter.

“Y/n, can I talk to you?”

You pulled away, confused to see Klaus standing in your lawn. Kai’s hold on your waist tightened. You gave Kai an assuring smile, patting his chest. “I’ll meet you inside.”

Kai gave Klaus a glare before walking into your house. You shut the door behind him, facing Klaus.

“What’s up? Did you leave something here?” You asked.

“No. I’m leaving for New Orleans tonight,” he explained.

You gasped, “What? Why?”

“I think it’s about time I went home. What I came here to do didn’t go as planned,” he sighed.

You frowned, “I’m sorry. Maybe you can do it again.”

“I think that’s highly unlikely now.”

“How come?” You cocked your head to the side.

He chuckled, “You’re so innocent. I came here for you.”

You were shocked, to say the least. “Why?”

“Because I…” he trailed off. He shook his head in disappointment. “It doesn’t matter. I came here to tell you goodbye.”

“A-Alright,” you nodded. You walked down the stairs of your porch, hugging him tightly. You squeezed your eyes shut and a few tears ran down your face.

“I’ll see you soon, yeah?” You asked.

“Of course. I love you.” He hugged your impossibly tighter.

You hesitated before saying the words. “I… I love you, too.”

You wished you meant it in the way you used to, but you didn’t anymore. Or did you?
