JSYK the OP of the Crab Day post is a self-identified conservative Christian. Can't speak to anything she may have done or said, but I do know that Crab Day wouldn't actually fix Tumblr - the site is running a 30mil *deficit,* which is different from debt. All Crab Day would do would be telling staff that their current policies get users to send them more money, which doesn't actually change anything. Corporations change only when their business strategy is losing the shareholders money.
Gotta be honest, my friend, I'm... not sure what you're trying to do here? Warn me that the original post was made by a Problematic Person (tm) and therefore that must mean it's all wrong, or.... what?
We know that Tumblr badly needs money, because they have told us that and openly admitted that the unpopular new changes were spurred by a need for increasing revenue. I logged on just now on desktop and got a suggestion that I could purchase an ad-free browsing subscription to help support the hellsite (which is the word they used, because they have very much embraced the joke). I have in fact already bought an ad-free subscription, both because I like the product Tumblr provides and want to keep using it in its current form, and because it makes my mobile experience immeasurably nicer. I am well aware that especially in this era of social media sites dropping like flies, the continued existence of a platform that is 30-million-dollars underwater (however you want to split hairs about exactly how) is not a guarantee. And we all complain about Tumblr, but we have all been here a long time (me, uh, over 10 years), we have a solid community, there's no other alternative that's really ever come up or gotten the same kind of uptake, and if it went under, we would be uh, screwed.
Tumblr is kind of a mess, it's the antithesis of every social media site, and it doesn't (for now) have the crap that makes The Artist Formerly Known As Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram so utterly unusable, or if it does, you can (mostly) turn it off. That's why we all like it and why, even if we are resolutely anti-capitalist gremlins who resist being marketed to with every fiber of our being, it doesn't change the fact that servers, staff, and all the rest cost real human-people money which the site, by their own frank admission, is struggling to raise. Even if staff does often make crappy updates, they generally at least TRY to listen to us and include a feature to make it optional or roll it back, unlike certain unnamed idiot billionaires. Their mockery of other social media sites can sometimes be a little much, but for now, Tumblr is pretty much the last place on the internet that does what it does, and I like it that way. If it went under and took my blog of 10+ years and all my friends with it, I would be incredibly sad.
That being the case, and basic financial realities being what they are, encouraging people to toss a few bucks at a TOTALLY OPTIONAL and fun gimmick that increases functionality for a product we like is actually not a bad thing. TumblrMart has crabs, checkmarks, Ea-Nasir merchandise (seriously), ad-free browsing, etc., and if our choice is voluntarily supporting the site through fun (and again, OPTIONAL) purchases versus having us all be involuntarily subject to some horrible data-scraping mechanism or forced off altogether because they couldn't keep the lights on, that is fine with me. Nobody is making anybody do or buy anything. But if you like the product Tumblr provides and want a fun material way to show your appreciation, then I don't think it's some Great Transgression to participate in that.

PLEASE HELP US HELP OUR FRIEND'S FAMILY
Tumblr media
URGENT IMMEDIATE NEEDS:
Siraj and her family need $500 to secure a truck in order to move herself, her disable husband, and her 5 children to a safer location.
In addition to this, she needs new shoes, and one of her sons needs access to emergency medical supplies, including colostomy bags. Long-term, they need food, water, and enough money to relocate permanently.
MORE INFO & BACKGROUND:
Siraj and her family are currently in Nuseirat, weighing their options. it is difficult to relocate with so many kids and an adult with a disability, and they have already had to do it twelve times. we are hoping to ease their troubles by helping them get access to a truck, as mentioned above.
Siraj keeps us posted, and despite everything her spirits are high. she was excited to let us know that she used some of the funds to buy an avocado as a treat. please, if you have anything to spare, help us help our friend's family. a reblog also goes a long way.
for updates on how the fund is going, and news from Siraj and her family, Beth, who runs the gfm, posts on instagram, and you can follow her here.
from the gfm page:
Siraj is a 32 year old mother of 5 children. Siraj met her husband Mohammad and married him in 2010 while she was attending Al Asqa university in Gaza, where she graduated in 2012 with a degree in public and media relations. She and Mohammed opened their own business, a clothing store, and worked very hard to provide for their family. They had a successful business and a beautiful home they shared with Mohammed’s family as well. When they first started their business it was an online store, but they were in the process of opening a physical storefront last fall. When their home was destroyed in October they also lost all of the merchandise they had purchased to open their store. Their home was in Nuseirat in Gaza City. The family was at home on the 17th of October when their home was hit. The entire family was trapped and injured in this event. Mohammed suffered an injury to his foot and has been disabled ever since. The parents also had to go through the horror of digging their babies out from the rubble and trying to get their injuries treated. After they lost their home in October, they have been displaced and ordered to move 12 different times. You can imagine the physical and emotional toll this must take on someone. This family currently lives in a tent somewhere southeast of the city. They do not have the means to move again should they be ordered to at this time. The long term goal for this family is medical evacuation for the child Eyad, as he is suffering the most. Realistically medical care for the entire family is needed.
LEARN ABOUT THE CHILDREN UNDER THE READ MORE CUT!
Their oldest children are twins Maya & Yazan who are 11. Siraj has told me that Yazan had dreams of being in the Olympics and mom said he competed in swimming and martial arts and horseback riding. Maya is a gifted artist who misses her school and classmates. Their second son is Eyad who is 7. Eyad is special because he requires medical supplies that aren’t available to the family right now; a colostomy bag, which the family is forced to improvise for him, as none are available. Having a need like this go unmet will cause more issues for Eyad in coming days and his parents are distraught that they can’t care for him. He could suffer from skin breakdown from having his waste touch his skin without these supplies. Part of the funds we raise will be saved for future medical supplies. Siraj will keep some funds on hand to purchase things for Eyad when they are available. Next is Ibrahem, who is only 3 years old. Ibrahem is a toddler who should be at the playground or the chalet with his cousins and instead has to make due at camp. Baby Ahmed just turned one in July. He has spent more of his life dodging bullets than he has got to spend feeling safe with his family. The last reported costs at Rafah crossing to Egypt were $5000 -$7000 per person. All funds are going directly to this family. Funds that are withdrawn now will be used to purchase needed items like food or repairs for their tent. Any withdrawn funds that are left will be saved to purchase future supplies when they are available and for future living expenses. It is our intention that the children will continue to benefit from this fund should something happen to their parents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
photos are from "before".
this campaign is run by one of Siraj's family members who lives in the US, with the help of one of my best friends, who is assisting with writing in English and posting to social media. my friend and Siraj have been getting to know one another over the past couple of months, and we have all come to view her as a friend. for her birthday, we all sent her a video wishing her a happy birthday, and she was delighted to see the faces of people on the otheer side of the world who care about her. this is very personal to me. please please help if you can.

1. Jungkook’s fans
2. His own logo under the song name
3. And link that leads to “sign up for updates from Jung kook and bts”
So Jk as soloist is established
Before I just wondered whether they would disband or not. Sorry, now I want it. Interesting, how 6 others are doing right now…
Let's dig in!
Hopeless. Best to ignore them. Also, if Jungkook's music really resonates with them, great! Buy it, listen to it, whatever. I hope eventually ARMYs will stop supporting everything the members release out of obligation and actually consume what they think is good/to their individual taste. Otherwise, be ready for more Permission to Dance and Yet to Come-type songs.
Yeah. Look, HYBE didn't invest $100 million plus into JK's solo career for nothing. Expect to see way more of this as time passes, especially once they're out of the military. I know the trademarked label gets under people's skin, but remember that the trademark is owned by HYBE, not Jungkook! The company makes money off his merchandise first and foremost. Meanwhile, Jimin's dad/family keep all the revenue generated from ZM-ILLENIAL products. Let's hope they get international shipping up and running ASAP because buying directly from them is a much better alternative to support Jimin rather than filling HYBE's coffers with streams, music purchases, and Jimin-related merchandise.
As some smart person wrote on Twitter today, the fandom is slowly being conditioned to replace BTS with Jungkook.
Jungkook's solo career started several years ago. When he stayed behind in New York to record Left & Right with Charlie Puth it was obvious which way the company was moving. And man did he look happy. I've been watching JK's facial expressions throughout Chapter 2 hoping to see some signs that he might feel bad about the extra push, the fraudulence, the unfair treatment to the others, but I don't see it. I think he feels no guilt whatsoever. I'm not necessarily surprised because he strikes me as a pretty immature guy - especially once he started doing those lives from his apartment. He's a kid. What does surprise me is the complete lack of response from the others. Do they really not care? Are they ready to move on to their own projects? Maybe it's a relief to let JK be responsible for bringing in the cash for the company while they go off and do their own thing?
I was way too invested in this JM/JK solo situation as it first rolled out. The SEVEN posters across the globe, even the name of the song itself, made me so mad. Then I saw the leaked footage of Jimin and Jungkook on that boat in Connecticut and Jimin's big grin, and I realized being a member of BTS is just a job. The members are colleagues, they work for BigHit, which is a subsidiary of HYBE, whose chairman is Bang Si-Hyuk. It’s not that serious. Let it go.
Speaking of letting go. I sincerely hope that some day Jimin is represented by a different label. I hope his future trajectory is that of an indie artist and not a mega star. I want him to stay true to his values and artistic vision. I don't care if he's not a household name. I desperately wish people would stop mass streaming his music and obsessing about chart placement, but I understand why they do and I'm not judging. But he himself continues to insinuate he's not making his solo music for the charts or the money or the fame. He seems far more focused on putting out a good product. God, that must drive BSH CRAZY given how obsessed he is with all of those things.
My final thought is this. The day Jimin's fans stop comparing his stream counts, album sales, awards, and paid media play to Jungkook’s is the day Jimin is finally free! I hope fans can find a way to love him for his talents rather than his metrics. JK and JJKs can keep that shit for themselves.

"Designer brands are qualified in that they are products labelled and marketed under a prestigious umbrella, usually of a higher quality and usually named for the founder, creator or designer. 28OP fits that description" So does his merch 🤷‍♀️
Oooo, interesting.
Let’s break it down;
Designer brands are marketed and labelled under a prestigious umbrella: - I would argue that the branding concept of a designer label differs heavily from artist merch and this is what gives them that ‘prestigious’ title. What I mean here is that the marketing and accessibility around any luxury brand is going to be significantly different to the way any one artist pushes their merch (thinking concept collections, fashion events, limited collection size vs. on the spot concert purchasing en masse predominately as souvenirs).
Designer brands are usually of a higher quality: - Whilst it’s true that Louis’ merch in particular is of good and sustainable quality, this is not true of all artist merchandise. Artist merchandise has a high ticket price normally in accordance with the popularity of the artist themselves and rarely interacts with the quality, fit or design of the product itself. In this respect, Louis is an anomaly and probably shows how seriously he’s invested in this idea. Artist merch also tends to act as a walking billboard for whatever event you purchased it from - thinking hoodies with world tour all over them, thinking t-shirts with gig lists down the back. Designer labels don’t look to emulate this because they’re not riding on advertising or endorsing another product. They exist on their own merit. Of course, that’s not to say designer brands don’t plaster YSL or Prada on everything, but that’s usually an aesthetic choice and serves to advertise the collection/the T-shirt itself ect. rather than another entity.
Designer brands are usually named after the founder or creator: - I mean, I’m thinking Chanel here, Fenti, 28OP. It tracks. But it’s important to note that these brands stand-alone outside of their initial creator, on the pure quality of their products, their marketing and their offering. Artist merch doesn’t - and can’t - have this distinction. Designer brands must compete in this arena against comparative offerings, artist merch doesn’t necessarily have this competition because you’re not buying the tee for the fit, or the statement, you’re buying it as a keepsake or as a show of support for an album.
And I would probably argue that the vast majority of artist merch isn’t actually created with or by the artist themselves (and that’s not a drag, everyone has different interests and that’s what teams are for). So in the ven-diagram of merchandise vs designer label, you’ll probably find some overlap but not loads.
With Louis in particular, we know he’s fundamentally intrinsic to the design and output of 28OP. And the way it’s marketed and who it’s marketed to will make a big difference in how we see the products and how this whole scheme plays out - and should be different to how his merch is advertised and purchased.
28OP will live and die on its ability to be fashion forward, dynamic, accessible and quality. Because long term, it’s about the clothes themselves and not about the person behind it. Artist merch doesn’t have that restriction or that prestige necessarily - the artist themselves just needs to be good, and it sells itself, in theory.

I ACCIDENTALLY MADE A HARRY POTTER PURCHASE ABSENTMINDEDLY. BAD. BAD GOBLIN *SMACKS SELF WITH LAMP*. THEN I WAS LIKE OKAY WHAT DOES THE CHURCH ASK YOU DO TO RECONCILE YOUR SINS?? AHA! PAY MONEY TO THEM! SO I FOUND A TRANS CHARITY AND DONATED TWICE** THE MONEY AS MY PURCHASE TO THEM AS PENACE FOR MY WRONGS. SO IN THAT THEME, I FOUND SOME TRANS CHARITIES AND I'M LISTING THEM HERE JUST IN CASE YOU WANT TO FORGIVE YOUR SINS IN THE YE OLDE CATHOLIC WAY*:
1. National Center for Transgender Equality
2. The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund
3. Trans Lifeline
4. Transgender Law Center
5. The Trevor Project
All of these are great charities. If you accidentally bought a Harry Potter item this holiday season and feel regret, or feel like saying fuck you Joanne in general, or feel like saying I like trans people and feel like giving to them in general, ALL of these organizations are good places to start!
*I am no longer catholic. I make jokes about the catholic religion. For some reason catholics paying off their sins like a car payment has always been especially funny to me. No, I do not support buying Harry Potter merchandise if it supports SHE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED aka joanne. If you must buy, try to get it used or from an artist on a site like etsy. Money for small artist and no money for jkr = win win win (times infinity).
**this is what i was able to do financially. Only do what you can, don't give what you can't. If nothing else, spread the post and hug your neighbor and tell them, lovingly, "Fuck Joanne! Happy holidays!"

“It’s finally here!” I shouted as I bolted from my room towards the front door to greet the delivery man carrying my package. Even without looking at the mirror, I could feel my smile going up to my ears and my heartbeat furiously echoing through my chest. The delivery man handed me a medium sized box and stared at me as I reach out for the box with a huge smile plastered on my face. I signed the delivery form, closed the door and ran back inside my unit.
I ran to the living room and placed the box on the floor. I turned to my left and hurriedly rummaged for my cutter inside the drawer beside the sofa. I also took my phone on top of the said drawer and placed it on my lap. I swiftly sat down on the floor in front of my package with the cutter ready in my hand when I remembered something. I unlocked my phone and proceeded to video call my brother who’s at work. My brother’s name and his photo appeared on the screen as I wait for him to answer the call.
“Hey Y/N…” His face popped up on my screen. I silently giggled at the angle of his front camera when he answered the call. Not really flattering despite him being good looking. He must have placed the phone on a table directly below his face. “You know I’m at work right? Why did you call? Emergency?” I could hear keyboard sounds in the background. He must be busy typing on the computer as he didn’t bat an eye on his phone while talking to me.
“Yeah I know. I just wanted to share some good news” My camera is facing towards me with just my eyes peeking through screen. I was worried that maybe he’s with some people at work that might see me when he answers the video call and I’m not decent looking right now. “My package has arrived!” I low-key squealed as I pressed the ‘rotate camera’ button on the screen and directed the camera at the package. I could see my brother looking now at the phone. He placed his phone in front of him and leaned it on a stable surface for him to see me properly. He continued to type slowly on his keyboard as he steal glances on his phone screen.
“Don’t tell me…. You bought another merch?” He giggled as he looked at his phone screen and continued to type on his keyboard. He looked back at his computer screen after a second, with a smile on his face. I opened the package with my cutter on one hand and my phone on the other. Tearing through the tape, I can’t contain my excitement as i shrieked when my cutter got through the end of the tape. I released the cutter from my hand and pushed it aside.
“BTS Merch! Oh my god, I have been waiting for these for weeks. I got the latest album, more Tiny Tan figurines, and some concert goods from last tour.” I proceeded to open the box and showed my brother the contents. I felt accomplishment as I look at all the merchandise that has just arrived at home. My ARMY heart couldn’t contain the joy that I have right now. I shot my eyes back on the phone screen and saw my brother smiling as he looked at me through the phone screen.
“Hey, I’m happy you are happy but you know I work in Big Hit right? I work for them?” He stopped typing, took the phone back in his hands and brought the phone close to his face. “I could just easily buy these things for you with my employee discount.” And now his whole face is occupying my phone screen.
“Jiyong, I know but where’s the fun in that? I want to buy these items using my own money. Well, an employee discount is nice but I don’t want to abuse your privilege as I buy too much of their merchandise.” I snorted at the fact that I really do buy too much of their merchandise. Besides, when I use his employee discount, the items are delivered directly to him as he works inside the Big Hit Building. With the amount of merchandise that I buy, I don’t want to embarrass him and label him as a big fanboy especially with him working so close to the boys.
“If you weren’t my twin sister, I would totally laugh at you. Not that I think you’re crazy but you’re…. loyal” He puts emphasis on the last word. He respects my deep profound respect for the 7 boys but he thinks that maybe I have gone too far with the purchases. He placed his phone back in front of him, leaning on a surface. “Oh before I forget, did you read my email?” I was taken aback with topic change but I’m used to it as he does this all the time. I pressed the ‘rotate camera’ button once again for him to see my face.
“No, I haven’t opened my email yet. I went home so late last night. My last client in the gym arrived late so we finished late as well. A bummer.” I scoffed as I remembered the fatigue that enveloped my body yesterday. I work as a gym trainer/physical therapist full time and a dance teacher/choreographer as my sideline. I work at my friend’s gym located in the heart of Seoul as a gym trainer. I currently handle 7 clients, some who I have worked with for a few years already. I also teach dance classes at a small dance studio just a few blocks from where I live. Mainly, I handle BTS dance classes because duh, I am a full-blooded ARMY. I really tried to make my passion as a source of income and it warms my heart to see people having fun when I teach them those dances.
“Check it. Anyways, I gotta go. I still have a lot to do. As you know, the company is busy since BTS will be releasing another album sometime this year.” My brother currently works as a Recording Engineer in Big Hit. He used to brag to me that he’ll spend hours with BTS and TXT. I was jealous of course but I am so proud he’s working for them. Whenever I listen to songs from Big Hit artists, I try to think that he has contributed to a lot of songs despite not knowing what exact songs he has worked on. Another reason why I listen and support them.
We both said our farewells and dropped the call. As I took out all the contents of the package unto the floor, I used my phone on the other hand. I opened my mail and saw few unread emails. Some of them were from my subscriptions on Netflix and Spotify, which I barely read. On top of the list was my brother’s mail. I saw the subject “READ THIS FANGIRL!” and I laughed. Here I thought he sent me something urgent or important that needs my utmost attention. Must be another event or merchandise that they’ve yet to announce to the public.
I opened the mail and my eyes were glued to the first line of the message body.
“Big Hit is hiring backup dancers. See the forwarded email below, sis. I think they’re meaning to assign whoever they’ll hire as part of BTS dance team.” Did I just receive this email? It came from my brother so it must be true. He won’t prank me like that. If I apply, there’s no guarantee that I’ll be hired right? That’s too bad if I won’t be hired but there’s nothing to lose if I try to apply.
I left my package scattered throughout my floor and ran towards my laptop lying on my bed. I sat down on the floor beside my bed and opened my laptop. I felt like a kid but here I am, rushing to find my resume to apply for a new job that might eventually change my life.
….
It’s been a week since I applied as a backup dancer for Big Hit. I sent in my resume and a few videos of me dancing to some of their artists’ songs. I’m lucky to have known a lot of BTS’ songs and choreographies by heart and I might have tried to study some of their label mates’ songs as well. I haven’t received a reply back from them and I’m worried that I may not receive any response ever.
Apparently, BTS is known for having only male backup dancers as far as I know so it’s news to me that they’re hiring female backup dancers now. It got me thinking that this might also attract fellow fangirls like me to apply but knowing Big Hit, they wouldn’t want anything scandalous to happen just because they hired female backup dancers. I’m not saying that female dancers lack professionalism but how the boys are the top rank boy group in the country, female fans would be green with jealousy if they see female dancers dancing with them. Some Armies are really protective when it comes to the boys so it’s really shocking to hear that the company is finally considering this.
The day that I got the mail from my brother, I spent half of my day planning what dances to shoot and submit. I chose BTS’ Idol and Singularity, TXT’s Crown and a freestyle dance to Beyonce’s Yonce. I wanted to showcase my range in dancing by carefully choosing a variety of songs. I admit that the reason I may have applied to this job is partly because I’m a fangirl but nonetheless, my passion for dancing is bigger. I have been dancing since I was a kid but I was not this confident at the start. It’s hard to convince me to perform in front of a bigger audience, let alone a stadium full of fans. I slowly got over my fear little by little when I started teaching dance classes at the dance studio. The fear is still there and you may wonder why I am applying for this job when I’m scared shit in performing for a large audience. BTS taught me to love myself and I am really trying my best to go out of my comfort zone. I figured that this may be my best chance in doing so. Also, I get the benefit of working alongside them which is a big plus.
I couldn’t really focus on my job for the whole week. I find myself regularly checking my mail in the hopes of getting a response from Big Hit. 5 days and there’s still no mail. Maybe my email just went to their spam folder or maybe I typed in the wrong mail. On the 7th day while I was pulling out my clothes in the dryer, I heard a ping from my phone from across the hall. I left my phone on my bed and the laundry room is right beside my room. I noticed that the ping was my assigned tone for mails. I hurriedly took out all my warm dry clothes and unto the basket, closed the door of the dryer and turned the lights off in the laundry room.
“New Mail. Subject: Dance Team Application” I saw the notification banner and my heart just jumped out of my chest. I felt my forehead sweating profusely, fingers shaking and my throat closing up as I try to open my phone and check my mail. I silently and swiftly read the contents of the mail. After two seconds, I shrieked at the top of my lungs and threw my phone across my bed. I ran out of my room and in circles around the living room. Good thing I live alone so that I could just celebrate and make loud noises like this. I jumped up and down on the sofa while etching the image of the mail into my head. I buried my head on my pillows and shouted once more, emptying all the air out of my lungs.
I ran back into my room and read the mail again.
“Good day, Miss Y/N.
We have received your application and we are glad to say that we are impressed with your resume and skillset. We would like you to come in our office tomorrow so we can meet and talk personally with our dance team. We are glad to have you join our current dance team. Details of our meeting are expressed below.
Time: 10 am
Address: 42 Teheran-ro 108-gil, Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea
Attire: Comfortable Casual
Please look for Mina at the front desk to escort you. Thank you.”
I still can’t believe what I’m seeing. Did I just got accepted? As a backup dancer? For Big Hit? Maybe for BTS? I’m such a lucky fangirl. I can’t wait for tomorrow.
….
It’s a good thing that my schedule is free today. I don’t have any clients in the gym scheduled for today and the dance studio is closed for today. I was so nervous and excited at the same time. I woke up at 6 am as I feel my jitters bothering my sleep. I tried to go back to sleep but I trashed the bed and rolled side to side for about 30 mins so I decided to go for a run. I turned on my Spotify and played my ‘Intense Run Playlist’ which mostly consists of high bpm BTS songs. There’s a jogging path near where I live and the scenery is filled with trees. Very calming, which I really need right now.
I arrived in front of the Big Hit Building around 8:30 am. I made sure to arrive early as I don’t want to be late for the meeting. I’m so anxious right now if I’m allowed to go up as early as 9 am or should I just arrived on time. I lingered outside and paced back and forth at a nearby shade. I wondered if I could visit my brother and stay with him for the mean time.
“Is she a stalker?” I heard whispers coming from my right as I slumped back at the pole where I’m taking shade just across the building. “That’s scary.” Three schoolgirls were standing a few meters away from me. They were staring and smirking at me. I wondered why they would think of me as such then I realized that I wore my hoodie up to cover half of my face.
“I’m not…”
“Good luck stalker-nim. You won’t get a glimpse of the boys.” They giggled and ogled me with judgmental looks with their arms across the chests. “Can you get away from the boys? We don’t want stalker armies like you.”
“As I said, I’m not a stalker and I’m older than you. Why are you talking to me in an informal tone?” I pull my hoodie off my head and slowly tread towards them. They laughed and ran away at the sight of me making my way to them. Sheesh, do I really look like a stalker?
I looked at my watch and it’s still 9:10 am. I guess I could try and visit my brother. The fresh morning air blew gently in my face, as if to welcome me, and be my merry playmate, and the sun looked at me with a warm and tender smile. What a nice start to my day, I thought. I put up my hoodie again and I was comfortable once more with the warmth my mere hoodie gave me.
“I have a meeting in your building today. Do you want to meet up? I’m not due until 10 am. – your adorable look alike” I texted my brother and inserted my phone back in my pocket. I breathed in the fresh breeze and not a second later, my phone pinged. I pulled out my phone to see my brother’s name on the screen.
“Lucky, I’m on a coffee break. I’ll be down in a sec.” he replied. A grin was present on my face as I stood up from where I was leaning. I skipped from across the street towards the building. I looked above at the sky and towards the top of the Big Hit Building and when I returned my gaze back in front of me, I was met by a dark haired man in his mid-twenties. I bumped into him and was knocked down at the side of the street. I exclaimed in pain as I rub my backside.
“Hey look where you’re go…” I looked up and immediately recognized the face. The man was wearing a grey Fear of God shirt paired with black baggy pants. His face was half covered by a black mask and his hair was kept away from his face with a black headband almost occupying his whole forehead.
“You should be the one watching you’re going. Crossing the street while prancing around like that.” He scoffed and continued to make his way towards the building. He didn’t even help me up. I sneered back.
“I’m sorry. I assure you that he’s not usually like this. He’s in a bad mood.” Two hands were suddenly around my elbows, propping me up from the ground. I turned my head and saw a woman around mid-twenties as well. She was carrying an opened big black bag propped on her right shoulder with filled with piles of unruly papers stuck inside. When I finally was able to stand up properly, she took off her hands from me and bowed in apology. She swiftly followed the man and shouted, “Yoongi, wait. I can explain.”
So I was right. It was Suga. All the images of a funny and loving Min Yoongi ran through my mind. Just like a scary movie, it was replaced by a disgusted look he shot at me a while ago. Did he…. Maybe he thought I was a stalker or something? I guess if I really looked like one then I don’t blame him for shooting those looks at me. However, a decent person would help anyone up in that situation.
I beat the dust off my hoodie and slowly treaded towards the building’s entrance. Not a really good way to start my first interaction with anyone from BTS, I thought.

Suits
I woke up with this scene in my head this morning and this fic is the result. It appears to be little more than a mood piece and it rambles, not really going anywhere, but it is an answer to Scott’s FabFiveFeb challenge with the prompt “What do you mean?”
As with most of my fics at the moment - SPOILERS FOR 3.25 & 3.26.
Thank you to @scribbles97 for the cheering on and the readthrough. And apologies to @onereyofstarlight I kinda built on your turf :D Hope I got all my references right :D
Don’t expect too much and I hope you enjoy it.

Tumblr media
Scott straightened his tie. The soft blue silk had a calm sheen to it. Virgil, ever the colour coordinator, had given it to him last birthday and basically demanded he wear it with this suit.
Who was Scott to disagree with a practising artist? A tie was a tie, but he had to admit the blue did something to highlight his eyes. He understood that much.
Shoulders straight, he found himself brushing non-existent lint off his lapels.
Pulling his hand away, he had to admit he was nervous and the soft grey fabric was little more than a shield between him and the world.
He was standing in his room in their house in Parnell, Auckland. Through the window of his bedroom the volcanic island of Rangitoto sat in a still and grey early morning sea.
A cruise ship was entering Waitemata Harbour, the floating hotel, a slow-moving behemoth.
It echoed how he felt stuck here.
But he was a Tracy and there were necessary things that had to be done. He turned toward the door and grabbed his wallet and keys. He had left Commander Tracy in the hands of Virgil for a couple of days. His younger brother’s thoughts on that were, as always, dutiful but reluctant. One of these days Virgil would realise just how good a commander he actually was and stop fretting every time Scott left the Island for a few days.
Gordon’s eyes had sparkled.
Scott snorted to himself. The aquanaut was as much Virgil’s second as Virgil was Scott’s. Gordon would have his brother’s back.
Even while hoisting Virgil’s underwear up the flagpole.
The smile that crept onto his face at the thought of his brothers did a lot to straighten out his thoughts.
Today was necessary, but there was always tomorrow to look forward to.
He sighed and strode into the corridor and down the stairs. “Dad, you ready?”
He found his father in the living room. The man’s back was ramrod straight, his dark grey suit sharp and professional.
The pink tie was an…interesting accent.
Grey eyes caught his staring at the silk wrapped around his collar. “Alan gave it to me.”
Scott frowned and took a step closer. “Are those…flamingos?”
“Yes, they were your mother’s favourite.” The tie was a solid candy pink, but embossed in stitches in the material were small flamingos. Elegant rather than gaudy.
His dad was still tense as bowstring, which was understandable considering what they were doing today. “You look great, Dad.”
The shift in his father’s stance was subtle, but the release of tension was enough. “Thank you.” His eyes appraised Scott. “You’ve made a good choice yourself.”
Scott shrugged. “Virgil knows how to bully.”
His dad snorted. “You, too, huh?”
“Yeah.” It was said with fondness. But onto business. “Ready?”
“Lead the way.”
The car was out the front waiting as the two men strode out the front door, Scott grabbing his briefcase as they left.
It was a short drive into the CBD and one of the reasons why they had purchased the house in Parnell many years ago. Some would say it was indulgent. Scott considered it necessary for appearances.
After all, if he was going to make the board travel all the way out here, he had to have the presence to make it happen.
A couple of years after his father’s disappearance Scott had moved Tracy Industries HQ to Auckland. His reasoning was clear. Aotearoa was International Rescue’s closest neighbour. The economic landscape worked to their business advantage and IR had an arrangement with the government that allowed fast deployment of the Thunderbirds if necessary.
And it was a simple power move. Making the rest of the world come to them spoke of confidence and strength.
His father had stared at him when he told him of the financial situation Tracy Industries was currently in. Those grey eyes had widened.
“We’re worth how much?”
Scott shifted where he stood. “It was a family effort, Dad.”
And it truly had been. While Scott acted as President, John had flexed his genius and played the stockmarket in his spare time. Both Brains and Virgil patented some core new technologies, Gordon expanded their ecological interests and Alan, still in high school, had helped to launch their high-tech simulator experiences.
Scott didn’t mention the merchandise. He avoided the merchandise.
But it all came together and where Tracy Industries was worth billions when his father disappeared, after an initial stumble and drop, it had recovered once the world realised that Scott Tracy was no pushover and was now greater than it had ever been. More diverse, more powerful, just more.
Scott had sat his father down and gone through the portfolio.
“We’re in aquaculture?”
“Gordon’s coup. He funded a small time ecologically safe project enough to get it off the ground. Now we are the major supplier of several marine crops for both food and medicinal purposes.”
His Dad frowned.
“It’s strength in diversity, Dad. The sum of all supports the all.”
Those eyes pinned him. “I taught you that line.”
Scott’s lips curled. “I know.”
And now the day had come where the current President had to re-introduce the former President to the board.
The buildings slipped by as the car darted through the city. The day was grey without being cold, but it was far from the tropics he was used to. People walked the streets, traffic lights passed them by. An ambulance tore through going in the opposite direction and Scott found himself stretching to peer out the back window to see where it was going, automatically running locations through his head, his hand halfway to his lapel to call Thunderbird Five before he stopped himself.
But nothing was said in the back of the car. His father was quiet and gazed out the opposite window. Scott knew this must be hard for him, but it had to be done.
“Are you sure, Dad?” They had discussed it late one evening out on the balcony.
“I’m sure, son. It is time.”
“You don’t have to do it now, you can wait longer if you need it.”
“Do you have reservations?” His voice was quiet.
“No! I’m just worried you’re hurrying it, that’s all.”
Still quiet. “No.” His father looked out towards the horizon. “It’s time.”
But still as the car pulled up in front of the tower of glass that served as their headquarters, Scott had to admit to himself, he had his reservations.
His father had had so many challenges to face on his return. His health was the worst. The long-term damage from years in space was unavoidable. The lack of a healthy diet was almost as bad. There were months of painful rehabilitation with sorely needed respite on Five. John had been his father’s constant companion. Gordon had stepped in as his coach.
The day Scott found Gordon in tears in his bedroom would always be engraved in his memory. His little brother had just simply overflowed. The skin and bone of their father, his pain, the scars, it had all managed to chip away even Gordon’s strength. Scott ended up holding the man as he cried on his shoulder.
Scott’s eyes were far from dry.
Virgil found them there sometime later and from that point on things had changed.
International Rescue took second place for a while after that.
They still went out, but sometimes they just had to defer. Dad needed them.
Of course, their father knew nothing of the sort. The brothers fed him the information they needed to. Scott didn’t keep him in the dark, but he didn’t need to know what he didn’t need to know. The brothers had been managing IR for a long time. They did what they had to do.
Scott kept Tracy Industries and IR moving, John stayed with their father while Eos acted in his place, Virgil, Gordon and Alan divided their time between Dad and International Rescue.
Grandma moved to Auckland to look after her son.
It was a challenging year.
But Dad was back on Earth and despite the pain, they still rejoiced.
The driver opened his door and Scott was forced by propriety to climb out of the car.
His father followed.
Scott watched him look up and up.
And up.
The building was truly an architectural triumph. The tallest structure in Auckland, it was an elegant sculpture spun from ribbons of glass and greenery. It said success and it shouted it to all who saw it. Iconic and a tourist attraction it was known the world over as Tracy Tower.
“Spared no expense.”
“No, we didn’t.”
“Impressive.”
“That’s the idea.” But eyes were staring in their direction. His father’s presence today had been kept quiet, but with the media in everyone’s back pocket, it wouldn’t take long for the world to realise that Jeff Tracy was making his inaugural visit to Tracy Tower. “C’mon, Dad. They’ll be waiting for us.”
“For you.”
“Yeah, well, the moment they see you, I’ll just be part of the furniture.” He shot a small smile at his father.
The smile was reflected in those grey eyes. “Then lead on.”
The doors opened for them and they strode through into the grand foyer. Scott surreptitiously watched his father as he encountered the sheer opulence of the massive entrance. When Scott had first seen the plans for the building, his eyes had nearly fallen out of his head. It was over-the-top and just screamed ‘rich and we want to show it’ that he had stormed into the architects and given them a piece of his mind.
Fortunately, Virgil and Gordon had been with him at the time and reined him in because the lead architect had looked at him calmly before pulling up a hologram of the plans and going through each key point Scott had neglected to read.
The three rescues the day and night before might have had something to do with it.
The building was an ecological masterpiece. All the art served a purpose. It had no carbon footprint. Under the glass were solar cells that generated enough electricity to power the building itself, plus half the CBD beside it. Woven into the structure were gardens that served as havens for the workers in the building and for the wildlife around it. Aotearoa was the land of birds and the Tower supported as many as was practical.
Gordon had literally been bouncing at the time.
But the foyer was what Virgil had fallen in love with. At its centre stood a holographic sculpture generating image and music from the movement around it. Where people bustled past, the artwork collected the movement and interpreted it as light and sound.
A play of colours and piano notes danced around the room. Strategically placed glass reflected and bounced it further.
“Virgil?”
Scott snorted. “You could say that. Once he saw the designs, I couldn’t keep him away from them. They are considerably different from what was originally conceived.” He shrugged. “I like to think he improved it.” He couldn’t help but smile at the memory of his usually calm brother gesticulating enthusiastically while outlining concepts and possibilities.
Scott waved at the sculpture and, even a dozen or so metres away, it waved back and sung a soft chime.
“You boys have definitely made your mark.”
A slight frown and he turned to his father. “We only built on your work, Dad. None of this was possible without you.”
His father straightened. “It is quite an achievement.”
A shrug. “It’s useful. It does what it needs to do.” He turned to reception and showed his ID. The young man smiled and ducked his head slightly. “Welcome, Mr Tracy.” Scott grinned at the security officer.
His father held out his ID, newly minted and shiny.
Scott hid a smile as the young security guard’s eyes nearly fell out of his head. “Mister Tracy?!” There weren’t enough capital letters in the English language to appropriately punctuate those two words.
“Yes, son, that’s my name. And yours is?”
“Uh, Cameron, sir.”
“Nice to meet you, Cameron. Have you worked here long?
“Uh, just over eighteen months, sir.”
“Are you enjoying the work?”
“Yes, sir. Scott, er, Mr Tracy has been very kind.”
Scott couldn’t help but grin. “Yeah, well, you’ve done an excellent job, Cameron.”
“Thank you, sir. The board are waiting in the Observatory.”
“FAB.”
Cameron’s grin was worth the small breach in protocol.
His father raised an eyebrow at Scott as they walked towards the elevator. “There’s a story there, isn’t there?”
“Yep. Had to pull Cameron out of Shackleton Nuclear Facility.”
His father stopped him in his tracks. “You went in there? That place is quarantined.”
Scott shrugged. “We do what we have to do. Cameron survived because of us. It is a success story, Dad.”
Those eyes held his a moment longer. “I’d be interested in seeing the reports.”
“They are available whenever you want to see them, Dad. I’ve told you that.” In fact, it had worried Scott that his father hadn’t jumped into the mission reports almost immediately. It as if he was reluctant to look into what he had missed.
It was understandable, but it was a concern nonetheless.
The elevator arrived as they approached and another security guard waved them in.
It didn’t take very long to get to the top of the building and the doors opened into the light an airy space that was the Observatory.
This was Virgil’s ode to John.
The engineer and artist had seen the plans for the rooftop space and immediately made suggestions. Scott wasn’t sure if you could stargaze in the middle of the city, but Virgil and the architects certainly did their best to make it appear as if you could.
The massive function area consisted of a glass enclosure that was the apex or the building. At night, lights shone on the glass in perfect constellations for the southern hemisphere. Even Scott was impressed.
During the day, the glass mosaicked shadows on the floor tiles that created those same constellations in lines.
Virgil hadn’t been the designer, but he had poked the team until they came up with this. To be honest, it was Scott’s favourite place for a board meeting.
It kept him close to the sky.
Gardens wove around the centre of the structure and when the meetings broke, there was plenty of fresh air and greenery to breathe in.
Today it was as grey as the ocean in the distance. Rangitoto Island defied the grey with its green volcanic cone.
The cruise ship had made dock.
Scott straightened his shoulders and stepped out of the elevator.
Immediately, every eye in the room turned and targeted him.
A moment later, every single eye slipped off him and landed on his father as he stepped out behind him.
“Mister Tracy!”
The name fell from the lips of Janine, Scott’s secretary who was there ready to take minutes.
“Well, are you just going to stand there or come in and take a seat?”
Scott couldn’t help but smile. “Captain Taylor.” A nod of greeting. “How was your trip from Mars?”
“Oh, Albert was excellent as always.”
Scott snorted as behind the astronaut, Alan, dressed neatly in a suit, rolled his eyes in exasperation.
Virgil, dressed in a grey almost as dark as his hair, emerged from the crowd, his eyes bright. “Hey, Dad, Scott.” He held out his hand to his father. “Welcome to Tracy Industries, Mister Tracy.” And yes, there was an amused smirk on his brother’s face.
Their Dad took Virgil’s hand, puzzlement on his face. “Virgil, what are you doing here? I thought you had command?”
The engineer tilted his head a little. “Well, sir, this is a full board meeting. Two is not far away, we can move fast enough. I can guarantee it.” There it was, the leader that was his younger brother even if the man didn’t see it himself.
“But at the moment, all of us are required to be here.” A flash of red hair and John stepped up from behind them. His suit a deep blue grey paired with his signature turquoise tie.
“What do you mean?”
Gordon appeared beside John, his smart pinstripe suit looking almost alien on the aquanaut…until you looked closer and realised there were purple octopuses on his tie and he was wearing sandals.
Scott rolled his eyes. He gave up. Gordon was never going to conform. It made him want to throttle him for it and yet love him even more.
“Jeff, dear.” A slim hand slipped around Gordon’s arm and Lady Penelope, all blonde and pink perfection, smiled up at his father. “You have to realise that your sons are all on the Tracy Industries board. Along with myself and Captain Taylor, of course.
His father spun to stare at Scott.
He just shrugged. “It’s a family business, Dad.”
Alan stepped forward. “Aunt Val sends her apologies. She is caught up in the States.”
His Dad was still staring at him. “But what about all those board member portfolios you shared with me?”
Scott tilted his head just a little. “They are board members, Dad. But so are we. We don’t have the luxury of be available for all meetings, but we do what we can. The quorum manage and keep us apprised.”
Lips thinned. “So why didn’t you tell me?”
Scott let out a breath. “Dad, if you knew we were all on the board, would it have affected your decision?”
Those eyes held his, but Scott could see the concern behind the grey. He knew this had been a very hard decision for his father and had wanted to support him in any way possible. It had been John who suggested they keep the family out of the equation, to hopefully put less stress on their father.
Mister Tracy frowned. “I guess we will never know.”
Scott didn’t smile, but he let a little hope flare at that statement. “Shall we call the meeting to order?”
A single nod from his father. Scott waved his brothers to their seats at the broad conference table to one side of the room. The non-family members of the board only had eyes for the elder Tracy.
Virgil slipped in next to Scott. Whispered. “FAB?” How’s Dad?
Equally quiet. “FAB.” Okay, but the same. They had both been worried that this was too soon, but Their father was as stubborn as the rest of them and wanted to do it now.
Virgil sat to his right as he always did, John to his left. Gordon slid over one with Alan and their father sat next to Virgil.
Scott didn’t sit down, but stood standing at the head of the table, a good twenty people staring at him…when they weren’t darting glances at his father.
A bird landed on the glass far above, its feet clattering against the surface.
“Thank you all for your attendance today for this special meeting of the Tracy Industries International Board.” He drew in a breath. “As the first item of business, I would like to announce my resignation as President.”
Several members gasped out loud. Janine let out a high-pitched squeak. A ‘no’ was whispered from the back of the room. Scott held up a hand and a respectful silence fell. “I don’t do this lightly and it is not for personal reasons, but for the betterment of Tracy Industries.” He straightened his shoulders. “I move to nominate my father, Jeff Tracy, to return to his rightful position as President of this company. Do I have a second?”
Six hands shot into the air.
The rest of the room sat in stunned silence.
“It will be noted that the motion was passed and that the board will vote, pending any additional nominations as per the constitution.”
The silence was profound.
The bird on the roof chattered to itself.
Scott caught his father’s eye and smiled.

#KeepErieWeird? How about #MakeErieWeirder
Tumblr media
If you head to any area that sells Erie merchandise, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a shirt, magnet, or bumper sticker available to purchase that argues that Erie should "Keep Erie Weird." If you haven't seen it yet, keep an eye out for it now, it'll be a fun Easter egg hunt.
If you've ever wondered what that's about, allow me to do a relatively shallow dive into the "Keep X Weird" movement.
Keep Austin Weird, the legacy of Red Wassenich
In 2000, in the faraway land of Austin, Texas, city native and mild-mannered librarian Red Wassenich had called in to make a pledge to an Austin radio station. During the pledge call, he said the infamous phrase "Keep Austin Weird."
Tumblr media
Wassenich's "Keep Austin Weird," chronicled the "odd" side of town | Image Credit: KUT
The slogan, which went on to be adopted by the city of Austin, was Wassenich's way to encourage the city to lean into its weirder side. It urged the city's young artistic residents to avoid conforming to appear more palatable to a rapidly gentrifying city. (Whether or not that worked the way Wassenich hoped remains to be seen.)
Wassenich's family described him as an "irreverent observer of life.” He wrote two books, Keep Austin Weird and Keeping Austin Weird, which documented all of the wonderful weirdness that took place in Austin.
Wassenich passed away in 2020, but his legacy lives on through friends, family, local artists, small businesses, and local Austin events.
Other cities have adopted the phrase "Keep X Weird." In fact, I didn't even know that Austin was the originator -- I'd first seen the slogan applied to Portland, Oregon, where I'd assumed it started. After all, on this side of the United States, we're all taught that Portland is the Shangri-La of weirdness.
Tumblr media
Yes, that is Darth Vader, in a kilt, on a unicycle, playing flaming bagpipes. You can see why I assumed Portland was the progenitor of the "Keep X Weird" slogan | Image Credit
In the last few years, I've noticed that a plucky little city that juts out into Lake Erie has started using the phrase, too. This brings me to my point.
Erie isn't that weird
For as much as I like Erie, I wouldn't call it weird. Erie is a city in transition. It's still struggling to find itself after manufacturing left and took the wind out of its sails.
I mean, if you've lived in the rust belt for any amount of time, it's not exactly a new story, is it?
That doesn't mean that Erie couldn't cultivate a unique culture. It could. It should.  And honestly, I'd argue that Erie must embrace weirdness if it expects to stand a chance against other Rust Belt cities like Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, and Columbus.
So how do we make Erie weirder?

Jesse and Ricardo, known as “Art in Tandem,” are two local Erie artists | Image Credit: Bradley Triana
Excellent question. It's not that Erie lacks colorful personalities -- I mean, look at Art in Tandem, for example. It's not that we lack interesting places -- the Erie Art Museum, for instance, showcases folk and local art and encourages Erie residents to get involved in all manner of arts.
And we certainly don't lack young people, thanks to LECOM, Ganon, Mercyhurst, Penn State Behrend, etc.
I think it comes down to more public initiative. More art festivals. More pop-up shops. Encouraging public art. Encouraging artists.
This project, which I’ve dubbed as “Here’s Looking At You Erie,” or HLAYE for short, is designed to feature local businesses, arts, locations, and people that make Erie unique.
Want to help?
While I don't have a verified ten-step plan or anything, there are a few things that you can do to help in the interim.
The Erie Art Museum is a wonderful place that showcases regional art, folk art, and modern art. Additionally, they host many really neat events, including art lectures, film screenings, painting nights, bingo nights, public art shows, and more. If you can, snag yourself a membership. It's only $15 for your first year, $45 a year after that, and you get some excellent discounts on all their fun activities.
Tumblr media
Calamari's, on State Street, offers an intimate setting and great food at reasonable prices
When possible, support local businesses, especially food places, which tend to be a big draw for a cultural movement. If you've got a car, you've got no reason to pass up someplace local like Calamari's or Virgil's Plate for a regional chain like Applebee's or Dominos.
Post weird and wonderful things you find in Erie on Twitter and Instagram and use the hashtag #MakeErieWeirder. If I think it adds to the movement, I'll repost/retweet (with credit, of course!)
This project is still in its early stages, and seeing as I still have to work an 8:00 am-4:00 pm job, and we're still stuck in winter, it might take a while for this to spin up fully.

Blog Post #17/18
Socially Responsible Music Consumption
I have not purchased a lot recently, but with the things I have purchased there have only been a few factors influencing me. The first is if I actually want the thing and if I have the money for it. The biggest one, however, is the influence of another party on my action.
The last music thing that I had purchased was my new low c bass clarinet.
I really wanted to buy this bass clarinet because I wanted a bass clarinet that went lower then low Eb. Also, this synthetic bass clarinet was  cheaper than a wooden low c bass clarinet. I bought this because I wanted an improvement and it was cost effective.
I really enjoy listening to alternative/pop music such as twenty one pilots and Panic! At the Disco. Instrumental wise -  I really enjoy listening to jazz music.
I listen to all of my music on Spotify or YouTube.
The current music industry is really not doing too hot. There is a lot of over saturation of genres and artists who think that their music is amazing. The industry is in a constant state of trying to find the next big thing. They are  the next big thing for a week, and then it is gone. No quality is constant.
My favorite musicians don’t really have an influence on me or my actions. I listen to them and enjoy their music, but it does not define me or influence my actions.
My favorite musicians have slight influence on what I purchase, but only in the realm of their merchandise.
Honestly, I am a simple man and have not really made a lot of my decisions based on social responsibility or ethical considerations. If I had the money, I would try to support artists as much as I can.
The only thing I can think of as bands or musicians acting in socially responsible behavior is them playing at benefit concerts, and donating to charities.
When I go to music events, I always act like a well functioning human being and I am not a distraction to the people around me. I, also, try to donate if I can.
A socially responsible musician should know what is best for their audience but can also act in good fashion toward their fans. They try to make their music accessible to every person.
Yes it is important that they act in a socially responsible way because they are headliners of society and everyone is watching them.
Yes, I would be more likely to buy an album from a socially responsible musician.
I have not attended an musical event due to the socially responsible aspect of it.
I feel like they are almost equal in certain aspects. People have certain ideals about socially responsible behavior that drive their decisions, but they also might follow decisions due to music consumption.
In the aspect of showing their authenticity, artists and consumers only want to see what the artist truly acts like. They do not want a fake persona put on by the artist (p.237). There are some naysayers who say the opposite, that they have to accept that they are famous and must conform to role model standards (p.237). Artists that show their true selves have higher fan bases compared to “fake” artists.
“I don’t know if people have a responsibility to do that….It shouldn’t be expected of you, the idea that just because you are a musician and that you make music people like that somehow you should be a role model and live your life in a certain way. I don’t really agree with that.”  “I think it’s part of these people being in the limelight. They have to accept that they’re role models and that they have a certain position in society that they’re privileged to have..” (p.237-238).
I have not really witnessed an artist promoting something that they did not truly believe in because I believe that most artists alway do something they want to be apart of. Over this quarantine, Andrew Lloyd Webber and twenrty one pilots have both produced music that has some money going to different organizations.

Protest Song Article
I think that an effective and good protest song needs to be able to capture the attention of a wide range of people, but should be focused on a specific topic. The article brings up the “three” leg rule where a song must be “a strong performance about an urgent topic with a specific audience in mind.” I believe that these capture the true and effective essence of making a protest song. In order to make a song that works, it needs to be performed in a strong manner to where it affects a person’s emotions and outlook on the world. The urgent topic would be seen by society because it must be something important. The specific audience would only build up the effective nature of the song. I feel as if the article correctly displays what makes a good protest song.
I asked my friend if they knew a good protest song artist and they told me to look up some of the songs by Van Halen. Van Halen has performed for many different benefit gigs and have given to multiple charities. Their lyrics in their protest songs always advocate for something going on in the world.
I think in their song “Right Now” they advocate for a lot of change in the world. It is a “modge podge” of different ways the world could be better. I do not really know if it could be considered helpful or effective because it is not focused on one object. They are fairly popular and have captured the attention of their fans, but the general populous might not believe it.

How to Make Money as an Artist (24 Ways in 2020)
Tumblr media
If you are an artist struggling to make money, then this article is for you. I will be showing you 24 different ways how you can make money as an artist, without paying anyone anything. I wrote this article from my own research experience and knowledge in how to make money as an artist.
MAKE MONEY AS AN ARTIST online
So, for those of you who are a little bit skeptical about making money online as an artist read till the end. Because I'll be telling you how to use online platforms to make money in real life & physically face to face.
1. SELL original artworks on Saatchi Art.
So if you have a lot of artworks then take good pictures, upload on Saatchi art. Why Sell on Saatchi Art? Artists Represented in 100+ CountriesWorks Sold to Collectors in 80+ Countries12M+ Monthly Page Views1.6M+ Monthly Visits1.1M+ Social FollowersPrinted Catalogs Sent to 1M+ Households18 International Shows & Fairs Annually Reaching 150K People You create a free account (again free) you don't pay anyone anything. Once they approve your account you'll be able to sell your works there. Every month there are more than 1.6 million monthly visits to Saatchi art. I'm pretty sure you can acquire some of the traffic to your page and sell your works. For each work so they take 35% commission. It might sound like a lot but is not too much considering that a real gallery would take 50% at least as a commission. Also they arranged the pickup. Once the work is sold you put it in a box and the logistic company of Saatchi art will come to your studio to pick up the work and send it to the collector. So for 35% Commission they arrange not only the traffic but also the pickup is a fair deal. 7 HIGH PAYING WORK AT HOME JOBS THAT PAY OVER $100 DAY OR MORE!
2. sell original artworks on Art Finder.
When you join Art Finder, you join the art marketplace: a friendlier, fairer world for independent artists. Why you should join Art Finder: Reach a global audience of more than 500,000 art loversTake control of your store, your pricing and listings and get performance stats and insightsJoin an international community of independent artists and receive exclusive benefits, including partner discounts and access to our artist forumSecure, fast and fair payments: Art Finder takes commission on artwork sales only (much lower than bricks and mortar galleries)Dedicated support and tools to help you build your career* They take 33% or 40% commission depending on the seller plan you have subscribed. It's very similar to Saatchi art but Art Finder has a slightly different clientele. I would say it's a younger, more lively also more affordable art collector. So if your art is watercolor, smaller size then maybe it's better to sell on Art Finder than Saatchi Art. It's your choice. 7 BEST PASSIVE INCOME IDEAS ONLINE IN 2020 (THAT EARN $1000 PER MONTH OR MORE!)

4. selling art on Red Bubble.
Red Bubble is the biggest rival it's the biggest competitor to Society6. And they are very very similar. However Red Bubble gives you 20% payout with some modifications, depending on different scenarios but 20% is better than 10%. If you would like to get more money possible out of the royalty so Red Bubble maybe is a better choice for you
5. selling commission works on Facebook.
Perhaps you know Facebook You can sell on marketplaces you can sell secondhand, new things or artworks or whatnot. However maybe you have not tried the groups you can join the niche groups or local groups such as the digital artist group, the oil painting group, the landscape group, there's so many groups you can join. Then you just share your artworks within the group, so that people can tell you how much they love your work. Some customers might be getting in touch with you directly on Facebook for commissioned pieces. I know some artists who are making a full-time living from selling commissioned pieces on Facebook within the groups. And in the future you can charge 'Libra', which is the currency of Facebook. So keep your eyes open maybe one day you'll be making a lot of Libras on Facebook.
6. asking for monthly donation on Patreon.
You can ask for a monthly donation from your followers on social media to ask them to pledge 1 to 5 to 50 dollars every month. So you can support yourself as an artist and meanwhile you can give back to your community. Some exclusive content or you don't have to give anything if you don't want. But you just have to find ways to retain them so you can have monthly patrons to give you.
7. asking for one soft donation on Kickstarter.
There are many website like Kickstarter, like IndieGoGo, GoFundMe. If you have an interesting project that would require a lot of funding that you don't have, you can ask our Kickstarter. For example if you are a photographer you want to go to Antarctic to create a photo album. You can say you're going to launch this project you need $50,000 and for each donor you can give like art print or photo album. Whatever that you think is appropriate for the different tiers and then attract them to give you a donation. The thing is you must fulfill the project if you don't carry out, you'll face serious problems not legally but with your reputation as an artist. So make sure that you will carry out the project and see it through.
8. selling online courses on Skillshares.
I'm talking about online courses I'm not talking about your online courses. You can sell other people's online courses. And each new subscription you refer to you will get $10 commission from Skillshares. Of course you can also launch your own courses on Skillshares and receive a portion of the profit on Skillshares. But it's depending on how many minutes people watch your courses and it's really hard to predict. I cannot tell you how much you will be making, but what I can tell you for sure is for each new student they give you 10 bucks.
9. selling more courses on Udemy.
Udemy is the largest online II course platform they have over 30 million students around the world. Udemy is more like the marketplace for everything. but Skillshares is slightly more towards the art and craft skills. So Udemy is bigger but it's not as niche. You have to see if there are existing courses that you want to launch to see you the level of competition. If Udemy got you a student you get 50% that means the 50% is the commission. If a student purchases your course with a coupon code that you provide then you get 97% that is to say you only pay 3% commission to Udemy as the service. So it's really minimal that they ask if you have a lot of potential students who want to study with you Udemy's better than Skillshares because you get paid 97% it's a really good deal.
10. tutoring online using Preply.
Preply is an online educational platform that pairs students with private tutors on the internet using video chat. So you don't really see the students, but is a real-time face-to-face online tutoring. If you enjoy talking to other people on the Internet instead of facing a computer like on camera then Preply is a better choice for you. They take a 100% commission on the first course of the first time student and after that they will take 18% to 33% depending on how many hours you teach. And how many students you have, the more student you have the less commission you pay with Preply.
11. licensing your illustration on iStockphoto.
I have used iStockphoto before and I thought it was only for photos. but now there is a special section for illustration. If you'd like to license your illustration at iStockphoto you will receive a small artist royalty for each download. And the good thing is if they use your artwork they mention your name and the fact is they pay you to promote your work, I would say it's one stone two birds. You get the money and you get the exposure that you always wanted.
12. applying for artist residency with stipends on ResArtis.
This is a bit of controversy personally I don't like this idea that you will apply for residency again and again to get stipends. I think it's not a sustainable way because what if one day you settle down you want to start a family you're not gonna take your one-year-old to the artist residency just to get the stipends. It's not sustainable, but in case if you are a young artist or if you want to travel to a foreign country but you don't have the money then maybe it's a good idea. ResArtis is like the Wikipedia of or the Airbnb of artists residencies. Many artists residences pay ResArtis to list on their listings. So you can see they are fairly legit because they pay to publish their listings. Choose the ones with stipends and apply individually.
13. creating videos on YouTube.
After acquiring 1000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours you will get monetized using Google Adsense. If you're not sure 2020 if it's a good idea to open your YouTube channel as an artist. Don't worry this is the best time to start your YouTube channel. This is a good idea if you are creating content anyway and you'd like to share on YouTube. Just be patient because you will need approximately 1 year to reach the 1000 following and 4000 watch hours.
14. brand endorsement IN Instagram or other social media
Instagram is the most popular for visual artists. That's why I say Instagram typically once you reach 50,000 followers on Instagram people will start to DM you. Saying hey can you give me a shout out for 50 bucks a 100 bucks 200 bucks. And it's your choice to accept or reject those brand endorsement and deals.
15. make money streaming videos on Twitch.
You can become an affiliate, a partner or streamer on Twitch. Basically people pay to watch your live streaming on Twitch. And if you can attract enough people to pay you. You can make decent money really depending on what kind of content you stream online. If you have enough people interested both using Twitch and interested in your niche. Really depends so I cannot tell you how much you will be making but there are a lot of potentials. Because Twitch is growing more and more as a social media
16. print on demand store using Printful.
You can make print on demand merchandising, art prints using Printfy. You need normally a store front like Shopify, Big Cartel and attract your followers to click on those links and purchase. It will be fulfilled directly from the Printfy warehouse to the clients and it does not go through you. So you do not need to worry about the logistics.
17. affiliate marketing on Amazon.
If you would like to do product reviews and you like to try out new gadgets or new art supplies. Then it's a good idea because you can try them out and then make your own review on YouTube or any other social media. And then drop a link down below for every purchase provided using your link Amazon will give you a share of it, so it adds up. I know people can make a full-time living using affiliate marketing of certain art supply and canvas and books and whatnot on Amazon.
18. self-published your photo album or art book using blurb.
Blurb is an American self-publishing platform. that enables you to share publish produce promote. And whatever you want with your content and publishing a book. So it's like the Printfy for books. It's very useful if you want to make like children's books or photo albums. You can easily produce eBook using InDesign or the Blurbs it's own online kind of plug-in. I have used the blurb to produce a photo album before for a private event and it worked pretty well so I like them and I'll say it's a good idea.
19. freelance design work at Upwork.
Upwork is a trending market place for freelance gigs. It takes 20% commission for the first $500 billed with the client, 10% for the earnings between $500 and $10,000 and 5% for earnings that exceed $10,000. I would say is pretty fair the more you earn the less commission. You pay you can dedicate some time over the year and earn some money doing freelance design works. Logo design illustration jobs and make 10,000 and pay 5% commission it's really good deal.
20. micro gigs on Fiverr.
I have used Fiverr personally and I think it's pretty cool you start with 5 dollar gig, micro gig. And then after once you complete you will unlock the possibilities of charging more than 5 bucks, you can charge 50, 500 however you want Fiverr takes 20% commission.
21. offering other freelance works on freelancer.
Freelancer.com is for freelance works, I mean it's like no-brainer. It's the world largest freelancing and crowdsourcing platform in the number of users and projects It has over 16 million users globally. I would say that's a lot of people using freelancers.com. Freelancer works with large corporations like Microsoft SAP PWC. So if you are a good team worker and you have experience working in companies. also if you have some kind of certification saying that you can work in a team like Prince2. I'm just saying like that, you can become like art director and you can work with large corporations that is also good for your CV and contacts.
22. making art and craft experiences on Airbnb.
Airbnb experienced is like another branch apart from Airbnb main service for the rooms and apartments. You don't need to provide your room you can say you provide a museum tour experience a street art hunt experience. Photo experience those kind of experiences that you don't even need a physical place to host and you can charge $20 $50 $60 per session for the museum tours you can include some light beverages if it's like a sit-down workshop. Go and do a research on Airbnb Experience and see what other people are doing in your local community so you can come up with your own ideas
23. hosting art events are talks and workshops on Meetup.
Personally I pay $9.99 every month to use meetup service as a host. However if you don't want to pay anything I tell you a trick. For every host (paying host) there is a 3 meetup group allowance that is to say if I only have one meetup group. I'm wasting two group opportunities, if you want you can get in touch with other people and say hey you're not hosting 3 groups, aren't you? So I can host with you and I'll give you like share for example or anything. I'll give you like you know how much you wanna give and you negotiate you can charge people for art workshops, children drawing, figure drawing life drawing kind of sessions and you can charge anything from 5 bucks - 50 bucks or 150 bucks per session. You can share the profits with the co-hosts who is paying meetup, so you don't have to pay anything upfront and in the future you can pay $9.99 every month this is the probably the best app you can use so $9.99 is really a good deal. And depending on different plans where you're in the world you will pay more or less but it's not a lot of money considering how much you can get from them last but not least.
24. teaching art using Heytutor.
Heytutor is one of the many website help people find local tutors. So if you want to become an art tutor you want to draw with a young kids adolescents or young adult. You can become a tutor and then select your student. If you are outside of the USA you can just search another equivalent of heytutor in your local area. Go to the search engine and say 'art tutor near me' or 'find me an art tutor' and you will see many websites in your local area the best part is you can get to sit down with a young person and you can have a major influence in their art career. That is really the perks of being a tutor I personally enjoy teaching very much because of the influence the impact. Also I learned so much from teaching someone else so for those of you who want to do more face-to-face things you can host Airbnb experience, Meetup workshops and Heytutor or other kind of tutor sessions using those online platforms.
CONCLUSION

January 15th-January 21st, 2020 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from January 15th, 2020 to January 21st, 2020.  The chat focused on the following question:
What sort of merchandise are you most likely to buy for webcomics you read and why?
carcarchu
does a physical copy of the book count as merch? nothing compares to the feel of a real book in your hands and watching my collection grow is so satisfying. i like having a tangible way to show my support. after that is small prints. i rarely see acrylic charms of webcomic characters but those are nice too
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I know I'm particularly weak for enamel pins - which happen to be the first major merch I made for my first time tabling at a con. They're definitely the most common thing for me to consider purchasing from others. I also like small prints and stickers! And if a particularly cute character is somehow made into a plush... I'd be all over that, too.
Cronaj
For me, I love physical comics. So if a webcomic creator made a physical print version of their comic, that would be the best way to entice me to buy something. Comics almost always look better on paper in my opinion, and I'm a weirdo when it comes to book smell I sniff new books like an absolute degenerate. The other thing I would buy is art prints or art books. I have a huuuuge collection of art prints from creators I admire. So keep 'em comin'! I mean, I'll buy any merch that calls to me, but usually if I can't put it on a shelf, hang it on the wall, or wear it, I probably have no use for it.
Capitania do Azar
I'm a big fan of physical copies and charms of all kinds! I also appreciate stickers and small prints (big prints are nice, but take up a lot of space). Zines with side stories or related/concept art are also a good choice
keii4ii
Storage is a big issue for me, so I tend to not buy physical books unless like... it's a comic I would love to read but can't do so online easily (e.g. if the website doesn't function properly on my computer) I really like prints that have qualities/features that can't be replicated digitally -- e.g. foil, holo coating, VERY special paper texture, etc. (I've even seen one artist offer lenticular prints which I thought was awesome -- just wasn't into the characters that were on the art) Small to medium sized prints are fairly easy to store, so that's also a big plus for me! Also, clear plastic folders? I've never bought them admittedly, but those can look SO nice with the right type of art (some artworks look so special when printed on that clear material). I wish more people offered them so I could actually buy these, but I understand they can be costly to print.
Tired Programmer
I would buy physical copies as well. About the storage issue... Well, when I understand, that there are too many of them for my humble bookcase, I just sell or give old ones away. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And also stickers. Stickers rock. (edited)
SAWHAND
I agree! If I really like the comic I like to have a physical copy! It feels special since I think a lot of times they're limited printing. I also really like stickers since they can just get put on something I already have and thus not take up extra space. I generally don't get prints because wall space is at a premium and I feel silly not having them hung up, but that's just a personal preference. Other than that it would have to be something really cool or something with function, like a notebook or...I don't know, an apron, or maaaybe a t-shirt.
mariah (rainy day dreams)
Printed comics are definitely my go to fav especially if it's a webcomic I've been really wanting to read but haven't had the time to do it online. Sitting down with a book is a lot easier for me that sitting with my phone or pulling my laptop out. I do also like stickers a lot. I've really gotten into covering the inside covers of my sketchbooks with them the last few years X)
kayotics
I usually go for printed books, pins, or plushies. If there’s a Kickstarter happening I’ll usually splurge for a pin tier if it exists. I don’t use stickers that much but I know a lot of people love them? But it’s not my thing.(edited)
Cap’n Lee (Flowerlark Studios)
Usually printed books and phone charms. I will always buy webcomics that go to print and I collect charms. Other things like stickers and pins are nice, but often too pricey. I will go for them when they're bundled into KS tiers with printed books, though.
varethane
Printed books for me! Sometimes stickers, and sometimes enamel pina
Pins
I dont tend to get prints because I wont really do anything with them
(But my prints tend to sell decently, so there is a market for them out there...)
keii4ii
I just like collecting prints! I don't even put them on my wall, I just stick them in a binder kind of like my own custom-curated artbook
I really like seeing the combination of certain artworks and certain paper textures!
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
omg Kei...why have I not thought of that ?? I will now do that for all the print i've collected gosh!! and I agree with Vare, books are top tier merch I go for (zines included) Prints are a second for me, with charms and pins being the thing i least go for bc of space (though I am seeing pin boards come into fashion and I'm def into doing that as well!)
mariah (rainy day dreams)
I do really love pins too, I'm just really bad at remembering to wear them. I probably should get myself one of those clear back packs con goers wear.
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
oh yes ita bags!
varethane
The problem with me wearing pins is that I normally bike everywhere, while wearing a backpack
So if I put them on a jacket, the straps of the bag will rub on most of the good pin locations
And if they fall off while I'm riding my bike they are lost forever
Cap’n Lee (Flowerlark Studios)
I tried putting pins on my backpack for a while.... only to come home and realise they fell off at some point during the day.
varethane
Yeah :(
mariah (rainy day dreams)
Ita bag! Yes! Lol I'm always super scared that my pins will just break and I'll loose them X') so when I do remember to wear one I'm constantly checking to make sure it's still on me
varethane
I have one jacket that I've been putting most of my pins on, which I wear to conventions
And it did pretty well except my rice boy pin fell off somewhere in the Seattle airport and is now lost forever :(
Betrayal......
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
i have def...super glued pins to my backpack before and the rubber backings are so bad for pins too bc they never hold
mariah (rainy day dreams)
Oh, patches are another thing, like pins, that I love but usually have to stop myself from getting. I need to find a good patch jacket, because I really love a patch. I've been wanting to make one for my own comic merch for a while too.
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
ohhh yes same-- i stll have patches that i havent done anything yet with bc i haven't found The Right Jacket
mariah (rainy day dreams)
Same TuT
Eightfish
I've got the Property of Hate tarot postcards up on my wall right now. Also partial to a good enamel pin. What I'd love to see in merch is a well designed, stylish shirt, but haven't really found that so far. I find webcomic shirts tend to be too detailed and illustration-y to look good as shirts, and would prefer something more graphic.
Q @CecilieQMT making WAYFINDERS
I'd love to design shirts! Just haven't figured out how to get them printed properly... ^^'
RebelVampire
For me, it's digital copies. So PDFs and eBooks. Unlike many people here, I can't stand print copies for a myriad of reasons. XD But digital copies I can get behind cause it supports the artist, has some nice bonus stuff sometimes, and generally collects everything nicely so some website hiccups aren't a problem. While this has never come up because it's rare, I would also buy plushies. Cause one can never have enough plushies. But alas, I don't think the market is there for that XD
kayotics
Plushies are just really hard to produce and store, same with T-shirts
Well, T-shirts aren’t that hard to produce, but they’re hard to store and keep a good amount of sizes
Mei
I tend to buy books/physical copies of webcomics I like! I really enjoy the physical reading experience! I also really like buying enamel or non-enamel pins. I enjoy collecting them, but going off what people have already said, I also have an innate fear of losing them :(
AntiBunny
If it has a cute character, and the price is in my budget, plushies are awesome. Unfortunately that's a difficult one to do, because small batches of plush that are build by hand are going to be expensive, and a comic has to be very popular to warrant more economical large runs. And I'll also say physical books.
Mei
plushies ARE awesome
I got the coyote plushie from Tom, the guy who does Gunnerkrigg Court
I just really love it
and also I couldn't decide which of the MANY volumes of comics to buy
(i didn't and still don't have space to stock up on a lot of books so I must be prudent sometimes)
((but my bed always has space for plushies))

git along little nonnies
Got a whole bunch of you on related themes, so I’m just gonna do this all at once: a bunch of questions about DW, spinoffs, merchandise, business, management, support (and protest) and whatnot. In no particular order.
Ok there are petitions and peaceful boycotts directed at DW but problem is they aren’t addressing the EPs and things they, not DW, did so how are we to sign them, how to handle this when this could at best confuse the situation and not give any results and at worst, make matters even worse about what we want regarding DW addressing things?
Here’s what companies care about: money. Everything else is gravy.
If you want a corporation to pay attention to your complaints, then you need to figure out their sources of income, and find a way to threaten that. If the social reprobation is high enough, damage to the brand can translate into lost sales, but the tempest required to make that happen must be much, much larger than anything I’ve seen the fandom manage.
I’ve been saying this all along: voices are far more powerful than signatures. If twenty thousand people wrote or called in, and said what they liked vs what upset them, that would have a far greater impact. Certainly a lot more than a list of names with no emotion beyond a request that may not even be something DW can, or would, fulfill.
And don’t even get me started on mailing stuff in. Cute, but hardly actionable.
Do you know what kind of contracts DW sign, as in, are they obligated to air all seasons, can they choose not to air them, do the companies they work with (netflix, wep) have a say or more say than them? Who gets the last word? Is airing all seasons squarely on DW or more?
As I’m not a corporate lawyer employed by any of the signatories, I can’t tell you what the contract stipulated. What I can tell you is that a contract of the magnitude of the DW-WEP-Netflix agreement probably had a dissertation worth of riders covering the different types of possible defaults or breaches, and the penalties for each. Additionally, the contract also likely covered what constituted ‘satisfactory delivery’ of the product.
To take it down to a really simple level: you place an order at a restaurant. You expect to get it, eat it, and pay for it. You don’t expect to be told, “hey, we burnt your steak and we’re out of butter for your sweet potatoes, so have some green beans instead,” and then be told you still owe the full amount, anyway.
Netflix wouldn’t settle for ordering (and paying for) something never delivered, anymore than you would. Sure, any corporation worth their over-inflated stock options would try --- but that’s the point of contracts, to make sure they can’t.
Netflix paid, DW delivers, end of story.
...do you think ppl in charge didn't think EPs would tell they made changes and also thought they'd manage to bury it? And then they got in trouble and DW is going thru changes for that reason? -waves at DW goings on and silence.
I got lost in all the pronouns, there. Who’s the first ‘they,’ the EPs or DW execs? Is the second ‘they’ referring to the same as the first? So... I’m not really sure what you’re positing, but if the ‘DW is going through changes’ is implying DW’s got a shakeup and/or is promoting its head-of-TV to president and that’s somehow connected to two newbie EPs screwing up?
I’d say the chances are so infinitesimal as to be nearly in the negative. (I should also note, the press release listed successful shows Cohn oversaw, yet oddly did not include VLD.) DW is not a three-person start up; it has stakeholders and a board and a C-suite to satisfy. Cohn got that promotion ‘cause she’s got a track record going back thirty years, most recently growing DW’s TV division from 8 to 800 in five years.
Most corporations tend to announce their new CEO or President like someone woke up that morning and went, hey, I’ve got a great idea. Truth is, it’s usually in the works for at least a year, sometimes several years, or more. The only thing that has me side-eyeing the announcement is the silence around who’ll fill Cohn’s previous position.
But that’s again less to do with a single series, and more to do with what it says about DW as a whole, business-wise.
What meaningful changes could the new president Margie Cohn make that would be different than the last one? Also I'm sorry if your getting a bunch of Voltron/DW questions lately, you just seem to be the most knowledgeable person on this platform.
I’d be willing to bet I’m far from the most knowledgeable person; I’m just someone not bound by an NDA, and curious enough to do a bit of digging and jaded enough to talk about (most) of what I find.
A president can have immense impact on a company’s direction; that’s kinda why they exist, to set that high-level strategy. That said, Cohn will be bound by all contracts signed by her predecessor. The TV side (barring someone filling the shoes she left) will probably continue as it was. The theatrical side (which she’s taking over) will be where we’ll probably see any major changes.
And even those aren’t likely to be on films currently in production. Hell, given theatrical animation can take up to five years, I’m not sure that’d show much change, either. Look instead to changes in investors, new deals, and new properties.
What do you think DW will do about a sequel if there’s really no bible? Theres tons of plot holes & abandoned storylines. VLD will never feel satisfying, and fans already argued with different interpretations based on conflicting content, without a nice satisfying explanation...
I know this is the first of a three-part ask, but I’m skipping the rest because the only answer possible is to your very first question: the bible doesn’t matter.
Any new series --- even a continuation --- will construct its own bible. Same as we’d do in fandom: they’ll patch together what they can, fill in blanks as they need, and gloss the rest, or retcon it outright. Even if there were a bible, diligently followed, that doesn’t mean the next series is automatically beholden to it. Some franchises would care (ie Star Wars) while others might let a reboot mess with the details (ie Star Trek).
For every continuation, there’s gradations in between, since otherwise what’s the interest for creative minds, if you’re obligated to follow someone else’s script exactly? So, no. The absence of a story bible doesn’t preclude the next iteration making its own, as it needs, to whatever extent it requires.
I was wandering around the hot topic online store, and i noticed a shirt that raised a few flags and questions. it's the 'Voltron Location' shirt. it has all the paladins in different places in a star globe chart thing? with what might possibly be planet designations. plus Lance is the only one not inside his blue colored bubble. Keith is in Red and Shiro in Black again. it's interesting at least.
Nearly all the shirts use the same base images, just changed up. It feels a little like someone handed a designer a half-dozen images with a request for forty-something designs --- and now HT is just throwing them all at the wall to see what sticks (or sells).
HT’s stuff has been pretty consistent, from what I’ve heard: Shiro is Black, Keith is Red, etc. Considering the t-shirts seem to be selling out regularly (along with various other sidelines), I’d say someone is savvy as to the fact that the segment of fandom spending the most money is also the segment that prefers the S1/S2 lineup.
If that’s what customers want, it’s smart business for DW to provide.
(Yes, that applies on more than one level.)
There are VLD comic books being released by LionForge Comics, are those considered canon? Do LM and JDS have any involvement? They take place before Season 7and8 but I don't wanna support the original EPs.
Every fandom has its own stand on what counts as canon. Sometimes (especially with adaptations) you’ll find fandoms being explicit as to whether they’re book or movie (ie HP and LotR). I expect the same will eventually shake out in VLD’s fandom, too.
From everything I’ve heard, Hedrick and Iverson were handed the comics and ran with it. I suppose that would argue for seeing the comics as canon, being they were written by people also writing the main series... but from what I can tell, it’s one-way. The show affected the comics, but nothing in the comics ever affected the series.
That said, your purchases have nothing to do with the original EPs. All you’re doing is telling DW you like the VLD-iteration of Voltron.
What are your thoughts on the final vld poster? I feel like it’s missing the end. Allura is randomly staring back into nothing.
It’s a clever idea to do a poster for each season, but it’s not something I’ve ever paid any attention to, really. If it were drawn by the head writer? That might mean the artist had more insight than, say, a storyboarder or animator. But even then... cool picture, still not-canon. I’m only interested in canon.
Do you think that Voltron was rushed purposely by the EP's. [...] Wouldn't this effect the quality of, well, everything? I feel as if they got frustrated with the show at that point and just wanted out.
Dude. There are times I sit here and just stare into space, bewildered yet again not just at the thought of 39 episodes released in one year --- but doing that with 26 as a last-minute cut-and-paste rearrangement. All I can tell you is that what I’ve seen from animation people and aficionados (and friends) is that three full seasons in one calendar year is just bonkers.
If DW hadn’t wanted the schedule that packed, the EPs aren’t the ones getting the say. That’s a DW-Netflix thing. I really wonder whether DW used VLD as a guinea pig. TH went a year between S1 and S2, and the numbers slumped badly. Perhaps DW wanted to know if more episodes, more often, would keep fan interest high? DW has experienced execs, but they’re all from broadcast; how you arrange and time things in the brave new world of binge-watching is a completely different beast.
So, it’s possible it was less of a rush job to get the show out, and more from a desire to see what'd happen to release so much, so close together.
I still think it’s a bonkers schedule, though.
"Relaunch the whole property" sounds like they won't continue expanding the whole vld universe and they'll make a new itineration. Though if they do a spin-off it'd likely be on the vld universe surrounding the new "Legendary Defenders" from the epilogue. And "especially given the response" do you think after the negative response from s8, wouldn't be better for WEP to not keep working with Dreamworks? Or maybe they need to clean their brand from vld fiasco? What can you say about all of this?
I can say you might try re-reading, because boy is that a radical interpretation of the text. Remember, Jeremy was speaking before S8, and all indication is that he was caught off-guard as much as the fans. Re-read in light of Jeremy (at the time) appearing to expect S8 to be a crowd-pleaser.
...I'm becoming more confident in my belief that DW has something planned for Voltron. I mean they are still heavily promoting the show, LionForge is still publishing Voltron comics, and merchandise is still being made. These don't seem like the actions of a company trying to get people to forget a show.
You’re not wrong. Up to the last few days of 2018, DW gave every indication they wanted S8 quietly buried. Nothing they’ve done since has fit that pattern --- including the anomaly of failing to announce their 2019 series. Something is going on, that’s for certain.
Did DW really just throw the VAs to the wolves [for] three days? and there's still no official stance? One panel was enough. They had [the VAs] take the heat for them? But thankfully fans felt sorry for them? Which could also have been the goal, shut the fans up [with] the VAs of the characters who got the worst treatment and who love their characters ... Yes DW this really makes me trust you /sarcasm/
I don’t think that was the original plan. Let’s pretend DW released its 2019 schedule via press release in the first few days of January, and among those was an announcement of a VLD sequel or spinoff, coming late 2019.
People wouldn’t be fussing over putting the VAs through three panels. They’d be complaining we didn’t get the biggest room for every panel. The majority of the fandom doesn’t trust the EPs, and is wary of DW --- really, the only ones who retain any goodwill, at this point, are the VAs. So who better than to assure a nervous fandom about the goodness of the second iteration than the VAs whose characters were most shafted by the first iteration?
What breaks this is that immediately after S8 dropped, Josh and Kimberly went silent on twitter. AJ slipped into passive-aggressive snarking; Jeremy fell off the radar and usually he’s pretty interactive with his fans. Bex pretty much wiped  VLD from her stream, possibly including deleting older tweets. Neil tried to engage and made a hash of it, bless his heart.
Josh and Kimberly are consummate professionals who reliably promote the series after every season drop, but their radio silence continued for almost two weeks. This wasn’t the first season that came saddled with controversy; if there was a time to go quiet, it was after S7. Something else was going on.
I have strong suspicions backed by research, but if I’m right, I’d be stepping on a major legal landmine. In the interest of not getting blown up, I’ll only say that the VAs appearing for those three panels (and their low-key and mostly diplomatic hedging around VLD’s conclusion) was a good sign that all parties involved are willing to work things out.
[DW was] quick to handle the Season 7 backlash and have stayed mum on what is arguably a much worse reaction to the 8th and final season.
and
I believe the S8 of voltron we got was not the original ending we were supposed to get and highly edited. My question is why? What was the point of changing the original ending? [The] radio silence from DW and the cast is driving me nuts. I wish DW would make a statement.
DW is in an interesting place. Its TV side is barely five years old, but dominated by execs with long-time broadcast experience, predating vibrant interactivity afforded by platforms like twitter, tumblr, or instagram. DW’s background as a theatrical company also seems to incline it away from any ongoing engagement with the audience. It releases a movie and by the time that hits theaters, DW is onto the next thing.
It’s a strong contrast with production studios like Zagtoon (Miraculous), who penned an open letter to their fandom about production delays. Or little studios like Wonderstorm (The Dragon Prince) whose deft use of twitter and tumblr sets their brand apart. Or Federator (Castlevania), with their witty marketing campaigns and willingness to engage with fans. Even Disney was willing to be open about its errors with Tiana, and to make clear how it was striving to do better --- so there’s no excuse that only small studios do such outreach.
My guess is that DW's core leadership is from the school of business in which admitting a mistake is tantamount to ritual suicide. Don’t blink first, or maybe the rule is never let them see you sweat, but whatever it is, DW is turning into a textbook case of how silence can damage a brand.
Companies have multiple avenues to reach customers directly, now. Our modern technologies are a two-way street, and good companies leverage that to create not passive fandoms but active communities. It takes work, careful planning, and some level of transparency --- something old-school execs find highly uncomfortable, to be honest --- but in this day and age, those are crucial building-blocks to achieving any kind of audience loyalty.
DW isn’t going to render itself obsolete (at least not overnight), but it's on a track to end up as the studio whose work audiences only watch when there’s nothing better being offered. Unfortunately for DW, there’s a hell of a lot of other studios out there, and they're all offering something better.
