I am not joking when I say I genuinely think My Immortal has more artistic merit than any of the actual Harry Potter books.
#I mean if you subscribe to the most likely explanation that it's a trollfic#and that every single part of it was deliberately crafted that way on purpose#then it's legitimately a work of genius#the way it parodies an entire fan subculture at the time but always feels funny and not mean.#the way it literally pioneered an entire subgentre of similar fanfics and fanworks#it's truly irreplaceable. there's nothing else quite like it. nothing had quite done what it did to that level of success before#and it's impossible to recreate the same impact#you simply can't say the same for Harry Potter. there were other hugely successful works in the same genre both before and since
