Seeing the One Piece fanbase hyping up this 24-year-old white girl to play Robin because they're allergic to older and non-white women is so annoying to me (they're also allergic to fat women)*. The fact that she's super young when Robin is supposed to be visibly older and more mature than the East Blue Five, makes her an immediate NO for me. These weirdos will see a super young girl with black bangs and scream "Robin-chan~~!!!" because they can't consume media without their dicks in their hands. I mean, 19k likes? Seriously?
Iñaki Godoy is 20. Mackenyu is 27. Taz Skylar and Jacob Gibson are 28. Emily Rudd is 31. The ideal thing would be for Robin to be 40 (or AT LEAST 32, and not look like she just graduated high school. She needs to look older than Emily Rudd and the rest of the cast).
I can only imagine the amount of racist vitriol Robin's actress will get if she ends up being a WOC. And let's not even start with the comments about the size of her breasts. Emily Rudd is the most conventionally attractive white girl you could think of, and I still see comments saying she wasn't "right" for Nami because her boobs aren't "big enough."
"But Oda said that if Robin were real, she'd be Russian!!11!" And he also said Luffy would be Brazilian (Iñaki is Mexican), Nami would be Swedish (Emily is American), Sanji would be French (Taz is Spanish/English), and with Usopp... all he did was write Africa, which isn't a country. So let's be serious for a bit. Those answers weren't literal.
Y'all love to talk about how the creepy things that he says on the SBS are "jokes" (remember when he sexually harassed a fan who asked him if she could be a Jump Editor, or when he said he fantasized about Rebecca's top falling during battle? Because I do), so why are these answers the one thing you choose to take seriously?
But this fandom being filled with racist, misogynistic, fatphobic incels isn't surprising considering how terrible Oda is. All these issues are connected and lead back to the source material. It's nearly impossible to have productive conversations about One Piece when everyone wants to blame all the bad on OPLA or Toei, as if the creator himself wasn't the one who opened the door for every single problem.
Some of you act as if someone kicked your dog whenever someone dares to suggest that Oda isn't the Super Progressive Writer™ the fandom has deluded themselves into thinking he is. I don't even understand where the denial comes from, considering his misogyny is so blatant and his association with sex offenders is public information. I understand loving One Piece, but you don't need to kiss Oda's ass, you know? He's not a good person.
Being critical of the media you consume and its creator isn't being a "hater". I can consume One Piece while disliking its many, many issues. I didn't sign a contract that says I have to like every single thing about it.
I'll be upset if Robin ends up being played by some 20-something white actress, but I'm already upset by the fandom's attitude. *Don't think I haven't noticed the obsession some folks have with monitoring Ilia Isorelýs Paulino's social media activity to check if she's losing weight to be "manga/anime accurate Alvida", as if Alvida magically becoming thin is this super important plot point that needs to be adapted. The source material and the fandom's treatment of fat women is another topic I could rant about for days.

I'm only saying this cause I have noticed a pattern.
Noticed who was attacked? Half arab, mexican and a poc.
Now look at the people not attacked. White.
Just saying i think there is racism under a thin veil of this being about the war.
Twitter is known to have a racism problem.
But hey I went on a insta post that was a day old. It was a clip from the fight between Garp and Luffy on their ships after they got the Going Merry. Innocent video.
Wanna know what all the comments said?
"LUFFY SHOULD HAVE A ASIAN ACTOR"
Now as much as this statement is quite harmless but the fact Oda stated Luffy is Brazilian to the point the character is a national treasure of the country.
But they ignore "word of god" as the statement goes.
Estos guerreros del teclado son solo niños y fanáticos del anime al final del día
That's been my take on it too when I realized Emily was the only one not being discussed. I love Emily, she's done nothing wrong (that I know of), so I'm not bashing her. What I AM gonna stay loud about is how Taz was immediately shat on (we know how Americans especially treat people of middle eastern decent ever since 9/11) and then Iñaki who is literally sunshine personified (we know how Americans feel about Mexicans too) and then poor Jacob who is fucking AWESOME (Do I REALLY need to mention America's history and attitude towards black people?)
Now I know it's not just Americans that were bitching about this but for the ones that were, *turns to address American haters specifically* yall know good and damn well yall aren't that wholely invested in the lives of Middle Eastern people to be this pissed off about Taz doing a damn charity run. Yall saw the ones who got angry because the war, most likely, more actively affected them and thought, 'perfect! Now I can call to get rid of the actors I never liked in the first place!'
And why tf does Luffy need to be Asian when even I know his character is fucking Brazilian?? Just because it's anime/Manga doesn't mean everybody gotta be Asian.
That's something else, too. Americans (men especially) got a super weird fetish for Asians. It gets creepy with the way some of them act about it.

I finished Netflix's take on One Piece yesterday and, i must say, it was superb. I did not think they'd be able to actually capture that kinetic, endearing, emotional, slapstick energy that the Straw Hat's exude but, to my joyful surprise, they absolutely did. This version of One Piece is every bit as valid as the manga and anime versions. In some regards, I'd say it's even better. Certainly the pacing is far superior. I mean, we spent, like, two episodes in Syrup village which is all you need. I hated that arc because it was so goddamn meh. Not in this adaption. You get in there, you get what you need (Usopp and Going Merry) and you're out. It's actually kind of amazing how adept the writers on this show were able to distill forty-five half hour episodes, into eight hour long entries, without losing the plot is borderline miraculous. There were changes made due to budget concerns and the like but, overall, the alterations were more positive than negative, something that is quite rare in modern Hollywood. I have an issue with the fact that this thing cribs way too much from that Pirates of the Caribbean aesthetic (this show is nowhere near as colorful or explosive as the manga and anime) but that, i think, is just for normie yankee appeal. I doubt the masses would except the technicolor camp of the original vision but who am i to day? What i can say is that the cast is pitch-perfect.
Tumblr media
Months ago, when the cast was first announced, i wrote an entire essay about how perfect it was. If you're curious, it's titled "Bon Voyage". Search that up and give it a read. In short, i thought the cast was perfect. There was a lot of frustration about "forced diversity" and perceived "wokeness" but that wasn't the case at all. The characters actually skewed to how Oda, himself, saw them. Luffy was Brazilian, Zorro was Japanese, Sanji as French, Nami was Swedish (i think), and Usopp was Black. That sh*t is chock full of proper diversity and, surprise-surprise, the cast reflected that. Hell, Oda even praised Inaki Godoy for his portrayal of Luffy, even though he's Mexican, not Brazilian. To be perfectly honest, i think that cast, the chemistry of the main characters, is the strength of this show. Godoy's Luffy is a standout, capturing that naive yet powerful energy Luffy exudes. Dude is the engine which makes this show go but his energetic presence doesn't overshadow the rest of his crew at all. Emily Rudd's Nami is every bit the sardonic straight man i expected her to be and Mackenyu's take on Zorro is every bit the bad ass i imagined the Pirate Hunter could be in live action. The lone weak link, i think, is Jacob Gibson's Usopp but that's mostly because Usopp is useless in these first few arcs. Kid gets much more bad ass as the narrative progresses. Hopefully, we'll get to see a bit of Sogeking before Netflix inevitably axes this show because, if we're being honest, that Alabasta arc is about to cost a ton of f*cking money, and Netflix is notorious about not cashing out. I'm curious if this thing makes it past the three season death date because, seriously, even the supporting cast kills. Morgan Davies' Koby, Aidan Scott's Helmeppo, and Vincent Regan's Garp are perfect contrasts as the stalwart Marine contingent in pursuit of the free-wheeling Straw Hat pirates.
Tumblr media
The villains, too, were pretty solid. I thought Arlong was kind of rushed but both Buggy and Mihawk were perfect. Their portrayal gives me hope that cats like Crocodile and the CP9 can be executed in live action rather faithfully. I don't know what the future holds for this adaption but i adore what we've gotten so far. and so do general audiences. Outside of the weird slather of grime the US perspective pushed on this technicolor wonderland of camp, Netflix seems to have cracked how to adapt anime. Well, if I'm being honest, that was more James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez with Alita: Battle Angel but One Piece is the next step in that growth. In terms of Comic adaptions, I'd say Alita is akin to Blade and One Piece is this genres X-Men. Cats can look at this show and see the ground work laid. They can crib that formula, tweak it as necessary, and really understand how to translate the very Japanese feel of anime toward the more mundane and formulaic notions of the American palate. I love what I've seen in these first eight episode and look forward to what comes next. I want Skypiea. I want Lougetown and Dragon. More than anything, i want Alabasta because i NEED Nico Robin. She's my favorite character of the entire series and it would be an absolute shame if we didn't get such an integral part of the Straw Hats. Hell, even Tony Tony Chopper needs to at least make a cameo. Netflix's One Piece was excellent. On it's own, as a show, it was fun, whimsical, entertainment. As an anime adaption, it's one of the best I've ever seen, up there with Alita and Speed Racer. All eight episodes are out right now. Go binge them right now. Support this fantastic show because we need more of this and less of sh*t like Bebop and Death Note. Even though i kind of like Netflix's Death Note.

*raises hand* Yes, angry and negative person here!
I am PISSED because why tf did the casting call announcement get our hopes up by saying they were looking for a LATINA actress to play Robin only to have her (possibly, I hope not) be played by a white woman?! EVERY OTHER CHARACTER on that casting call list is being played by the type of person they said it was looking for, so why not Robin?!
Why does the boys side of the MAIN Straw Hat crew get to be such a diverse bunch, but for the girls it’s just gonna be… 2 white women? I guess they said “Vivi (a temporary member that will leave in S3) is the only lead WOC you’ll get! That’s enough diversity for today!”
Every time I’ve see someone say “Omg Lera is perfect casting!” I look at pre-whitewashed Robin and cry! Also, I'm tired of people going "Oda said Robin is Russian, so stop asking for WOC to play her!" …Robin has not spoken a single bit of Russian in the manga/anime nor does she have a Russian accent! And even if she was Russian, that doesn't mean a woman of color couldn't play her! Nationality DOES NOT equal skin color!
Sanji is "confirmed" to be French, but Taz Skylar is Lebanese, British, and Spanish! Nami is "confirmed" to be Swedish, but Emily Rudd is American! Luffy is "confirmed" to be Brazilian but Inaki is Mexican! If these mfs don't get out of here with that "confirmed" mess when Oda was just saying shit just to say it so he could move on to the next question!
Anyways, sorry for the rant! I just needed to get that out of my system! I’ll probably get over it by the time season 2 drops, but for now I’M PISSED OFF! Like, what was the reason for pulling our leg?! This could’ve been such a major opportunity for a Latina actress, more diversity in the live action Straw Hat Crew, and get more people to respect OG-Robin’s melanin, but… Oh well, I guess
Huh.. kinda shocked I haven't seen a single negative reaction to the Robin casting. Am I the only person who was hoping they'd backtrack on all these years of whitewashing her and cast a brown woman? Honestly I wasn't even hoping anymore so much as expecting it, which was really stupid I guess. I'm really sad about it honestly. I thought her being a woman of color made her ennies lobby arc even more powerful and was hoping we'd get there one day with opla. She does really look like Robin though, just, you know, white.
I know Oda once said Robin would be from Russia, and I know that a lot of people consider pre-ts Robin's skin tone "an animation mistake" or "just a tan from living in the desert" but I find those explanations both laughable and irritating. Who even cares if it was the original intention or not? She was beautiful and it added a positive and meaningful dimension to her character.
(And I don't put a lot of weight on his sbs answers in general, especially that one. I mean. We all remember where he said Usopp would be from right.)
I saw someone being excited for positive Slav representation, which is nice. From that angle I'm glad. But I'm still disappointed, and really, really surprised that I haven't seen anyone else expressing theirs. I guess I was the only one actually expecting it lol

They announced the cast for the One Piece live action and I'm surprisingly satisfied?? And to surprise me even more they're going by Oda's nationality headcanons too!?!? So Luffy is Brazilian and Zoro is Japanese, Nami is Swedish and Sanji is French and so on and so forth and im so happy
Tumblr media
I mean I absolutely know its gonna be a cringey mess with halfhearted comedy, weird cgi and odd story choices thats gonna fall flat on its face (this is netflix we're talking about). But damn if the casting looks this good at least I wont be going in ready for a hate watch

So as a Brazilian, how do you feel about all-around manga superstar (and possible neo-pulp hero?) Monkey D. Luffy being roundabout-Brazilian, per Word of God?
(I've only read the first volume of One Piece so that's where my main understanding of the character is coming from plus some research I did, I'm still a looong way from tackling the rest of the series although this ask definitely reignited my interest. I'm not touching the anime tho)
Tumblr media
The two things that mainly stuck out to me about my initial reading of One Piece was the artstyle and characterization. The art style, that gets a lot of memes about for it's wacky character design, actually reminded me much more of Franco-Belgian comics I read growing up like Asterix and Lucky Luke than any other manga I'd read, which might have something to do with it's Lupin III and JoJo influences (I should really talk more about JoJo, it used to be my big obsession before The Shadow). And the characterization because I was very much impressed at just how throughly well-defined Luffy is right from the first chapter, right from the get-go. Zoro, too, but Luffy in particular.
I can't say I'm far enough in One Piece to recommend it in general (although I definitely like what I've read so far), but I'd seriously recommend Chapter 1 to anyone who's interested in storytelling, because I don't think I've ever seen a more effective, to-the-point introduction, explanation and rundown of a long-running manga protagonist than this one, even in manga I otherwise like much better. Oda does not waste any time whatsoever in making sure you get what Luffy's deal is so he can hit the ground running and I can only aspire to be that effective a storyteller in such a succint manner. I've seen a lot of memes about the supposed idea that One Piece fans say "it gets good after Chapter 1200 bro trust me", which is not just untrue and in bad faith, it's also completely wrong because, frankly, it gets good from Chapter 1 and so far it's only been uphill.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure what was Oda's thought process behind the decision to stake Luffy as Brazilian and I'd like to know that. I suspect it may have had something to do with Oda's liking of Captain Tsubasa and football, with his high school football background and his anime cameo as a soccer-themed character and all that. I've seen some complaints towards this decision because Luffy looks Japanese, I mean obviously he's a shonen protagonist, but that doesn't take away from it at all, because Brazil has a long, long history of substantial Japanese immigration and cultural exchange with Japan. Brazil is an extremely mixed nation with a lot of cultural input from it's immigrant population, we have the biggest Japanese population outside of Japan itself. Here's a tip: Wanna design an authentic South American character or a character that appeals to those sensibilities and want to avoid crude stereotypes? Look at manga and anime characters for a start and figure out why South Americans love shonen so much.
Hell, look at Luffy's design, I could put together a Luffy cosplay right now just by going through my casual wardrobe, straw hat included. He’s even dressed in red, maybe the most popular color for Brazilian heroes. He's a Goku who looks like he trimmed his hair and dressed up to play football at the beach with his pals and is probably gonna share some funny stories about his scars over barbecue and cachaça.
Tumblr media
(Pictured are: Turma da Monica, Principe Oscar, Tico-Tico, Menino Maluquinho, Castélo Ra-Tim-Bum, Yellow Woodpecker Ranch)
It's an interesting aspect of Brazil's pop culture how many if not most of our most popular characters, the characters that you can drop into a conversation casually and everyone will recognize, even people that don't keep up with soap operas and local film and literature or even have a general aversion to consuming Brazilian-made media (which is distressingly common) will still recognize and remember fondly, are characters from kid's media. Not even "all ages" stuff like superheroes, like actual kid's media, things not really made for grown-ups that people vividly remember liking as children.
Stories full of fantasy and unashamedly comedic and centered around optimistic kid protagonists meeting strangers and making friends and saving the day. The grown-ups are useless, school is boring, the authorities suck, why not go out there skateboarding dressed like homemade Napoleon? Why not go hang around some animals with a sassy talking doll at your side? Go beat up bad guys with a stuffed rabbit, anything goes!
Whether this is just the result of a natural affinity for humor and wordplay and fun and a love for games and fantasy, or the escape valve of a nation traumatized and broken at infancy by foreign colonialism and the resulting feelings of shame and belittlement that pervade so much of our culture to this day (we call it "the Mongrel complex" if you wanna look that up) and leads to a desire for freedom above all else, maybe even an attempt to recapture a time without shame and regret and bitter adult complications, it's a very recurring pattern. Maybe this is part of why shonen is such a pop culture juggernaut in Brazil and South America in general.
Whether he intended to or not, I think Oda hit it square on the money in creating a protagonist who would not look at all out of place next to some of Brazil's most popular characters. My first two thoughts to this ask were "Wait, what? When did that happen?" followed by "....Oh my God OF COURSE Luffy's Brazilian, look at him!".
I'm very glad you brought this to my attention, anon.

I'm sorry if this counts as a request but I was wondering what you personally headcanon Sabo's ethnicity as? (Like how Zoro is supposed to be Japanese and Luffy is Brazilian) I always bounce from thinking he's French or Austrian. {And take your time with healing, please. I don't like to imagine you in pain.}
It doesn't count as a request, don't worry about it 😘 Mmmh that's a good question though! I have always been fond of these articles regarding their ethnicities! 😋
I don't think Sabo is fitting the french model! Sanji definitely does, but Sabo is waaaay too chill to be considerate as a good French one and not pervy enough 😋
Honestly I'd go either for Australian or South African for him! A more quiet nature, but also serious on some point... with that big kind heart.
I mean... I basically picture Sabo with bare feet, going surfing every morning, being friendly and saying "it's all good mate!" all the time 😂😂

Ahhck! I don't know what to ask! Only wanted to say how much I love your writing! But I'm such a little shit that I always forget to comment! It's a bad habit I'm trying to put an end to. Your stuff is so awesome and you're great with the warm and fluffies! :D
Then I hope you don’t mind if I just leave this warm, fluffy drabble here:
Morning Cuddles
・ * ・ 。  *・ * ・ 。  ・ *・ 。 ・ * ・
pairing: LawLurating: n/aa/n: It’s a university AU, so I made Luffy a Brazilian exchange student (since Oda said he would be Brazilian & I just like writing him as such even if I’m nowhere near fluent in Portuguese).
・ * ・ 。  * ・ * ・ 。  ・ * ・ 。  ・ * ・
Luffy blinked his still-sleepy eyes, trying to adjust to the harshness of the morning light.
“Uah~ Que horas são (What time is it)?” he yawned out as he roll over onto Law’s side of the bed, getting shocked awake when he felt the chill of the sheets against his skin. He was starting to hate winter but mostly he hated that Law wasn’t there to give him his much needed morning cuddles. Judging by how cold the sheets were, Law hadn’t been in bed for a while. He reached out to the bedside table and grabbed up his phone to check that he still had a few hours before his first class and tossed the device haphazardly onto the bed.
Stretching, Luffy pulled himself out of bed along with Law’s fluffiest blanket. He couldn’t decide if Law was a penny-pinching miser or if he just enjoyed being cold for how frigid he kept his apartment- maybe both.
He stumbled sleepily from the bedroom of the little two room apartment, pausing in the doorway to give another wide yawn in greeting to Law.
“Morning.” Law acknowledged him from his spot on the floor, leaning over a thick textbook which was laid out on his main room’s coffee table. He barely looked up as he dragged a bright yellow highlighter across the page while holding a black pen between his index and middle fingers.
Luffy was a little insulted that Law hardly paid him any mind. He wanted to crawl into his lap and demand all of his attention, studying be damned, so he did. He dragged the blanket with him like a fluffy cape as he stepped over the coffee table, squeezing himself into the small space to sit in Law’s lap.
Law let out a wordless sigh as he watched his book disappear under the folds of the blanket.
“Eu tô morrendo de fome (I’m starving)” Luffy stated simply, squishing Law’s cheeks between his palms just because.
“That’s so unlike you,” Law quipped from between his hands. “You want some café da manhã?”
“Não.” Luffy smiled at him mischievously, his eyes meeting Law’s for a moment. “I want you! I’m hungry for Torao,” he laughed throwing his arms around Law’s neck, peppering his face with sloppy, wet kisses.
“Ack! Luffy-ya, I’m studying now. I’ll make it up to you later that you didn’t get morning cuddles.” Law tried to protest against Luffy’s attack.
“Não! Eu te apanhei! You can’t escape!” Luffy spoke, squeezing Law in his arms. Law’s body was so warm and comforting against the chill of the room. Luffy wanted to just melt into his embrace and stay there all winter. There was no way he was letting go for just any reason.
“Well, I’m hungry for something else” Law appealed to him, his voice smooth and sensual as he leaned down to whisper in his ear. “I’m in the mood for something special.”
Luffy shot up straight, pulling back to look Law in the eyes. “Does that mean we can get the endless breakfast buffet in East Commons Dining Hall!? The one you always say is too expensive!” Luffy cried. His mouth watered at the prospect of being able to tuck in to the variety of meats awaiting him in the fanciest cafeteria on campus.
“Sure. All the ham steaks you can eat,” Law nodded, “as long as you don’t mind if I bring my book.”
“And you’ve gotta give me morning cuddles on the go!”
“Sure, I’ll walk with my arm around you the whole way, now go get yourself ready if you want those cuddles.”
Luffy pressed one last quick kiss to Law’s lips before standing to shed his blanket cape and rush off to get ready.
