The new steam version of dwarf fortress is amazing and I fucking love seeing how many people are enjoying these silly little guys and their misadventures. So here is a random collection of things I love about dwarf fortress, it's community, and it's history. (Plus some personal anecdotes)
-That one time fish became one of the games greatest threats
-That one mod that brings deadly carps back
-Training dwarven children with "danger rooms" filled with wooden spikes
-New training mechanics being added to prevent players from throwing all their children into spike pits
-When players posted their best mermaid genocide blueprints, and the creators had to patch the game AGAIN to stop their players from commiting outrageous war crimes
-bOATS and the lack there of
-The game is under halfway done according to it's creators. The game has been in development for 20 years.
-not only do you have gay, asexual, and bisexual dwarves, but animals too. Wondering why you arent getting any chicks? Sorry, your rooster likes cock.
-That one time I wasn't thinking and built a baracks next to a waterfall and my military kept throwing themselves to their deaths
-No race is actually "evil." Goblins and animal people can even join your fort and become valuable citizens.
-Elves are cannibals.
-The game being considered notoriously hard, but actually having extremely customizable difficulty settings. You will just get bored of everything going well.
-That one mod in the steam workshop that changes all the models to have giant tits
-The way dwarves will just refuse to do what you want them too
-Forts falling to their knees because cats kept adopting dwarves and having kittens until the game won't load anymore.
-The fact there are canonically no boats, but dwarves will continue to migrate to your haunted glacier year after year.
-When rain causes PTSD
-Guiding nobles under a bridge so you can lower it and they are literally crushed out of existence
-pangolins are invincible, and your hunters will pass out from exhaustion before killing one.
-The steam version coming out with a glitch that causes archers to not pick up crossbow bolts, but instead bash their enemies to death with their crossbows.
-Anyone's first attempt at redirecting a brook
-The game will always be available for free. The ASCII version will stay available for free download on Bay12, and will continue to be developed alongside the steam version. The premium/steam version was introduced to help the creators afford medical costs and thousands of people came out to buy a game that has been free for nearly two decades, and always will be.
-When asked what plans the creators had now that they were millionaires, they both said they had been more focused on the dwarves than the money and don't even know what they will do with all of it, beyond take care of themselves and keep working on the dwarves.

Guardian of Time
“That’s because the War for Erdholyss has nothing to do with Cato. It wasn’t even about Erdholyss.”
“I know,” The bard interrupted, earning another eyebrow raise from the elf.
“It was about the survival of the dragon seekers and the attempted genocide of dragonkind.”
“No. It was about a woman.”
It was about You.
Synopsis:
In the heart of the Silver Empire, you, a small orphan girl become bonded to the dragon of time. Much too young to understand what it means you continue to survive on the streets, oblivious to the power living within you until a strange encounter with the emperor himself leads to your adoption by a power noble family, and betrothal to the crown prince.
Eventually you find a scholar who knows what you are and offers to teach you to unlock the secret of your bond with your dragon. When you're old enough he tells you of the Order of Dragon Seekers, a group dedicated to finding and protecting the dragons that have been missing since an attempted genocide took place 200 years ago. Meanwhile the emperor is trying to lead the biggest war the continent has ever seen with a race of beings that aren't supposed to exist.
Now, its time for you to take your place, both in the Dragon Seekers, and in the court of the Silver Empire. There are numerous forces trying to stop you, but they all lead to the same place. The Cult of Evanyrid, the one who led the original draconic genocide, has made you their next target. The problem, however, isn't that they want you dead. It's that they want you alive.
Features:
This is game is genderlocked to a female protagonist, but several aspects her personality and appearance are customizable.
Bond with an ancient dragon of time.
Discover the secrets of the past, both those lost by Dragon Seekers, and those the Empire is trying to hide, and possibly stop a war in the process.
Form strong relationships with many different characters including your foster siblings, and mentor character.
Fall in love with one of six men who help you on your quest including the prince your engaged to, his younger brother, a witch hunter, a pirate captain who may or may not also be a general, a foreign king, and a physician whose a member of the cult hunting you, or keep your heart to yourself.
Romance:
Lukyan Feylorn: The Crown Prince of the Silver Empire, and the man you're supposed to marry. As children you remember him being distant, but that's nothing compared to how withdrawn he's been since his return from war. Despite the distance he's always been protective of you, but is it merely the duty he feels for his future wife or something more?
Tzesar Feylorn: Lukyan's younger brother, and your childhood best friend. Unlike his brother, he's always happy to see you. When he returns from attending university in another country, its as if he never left. Unlike the others, Tzesar doesn't have a reason to be joining you other than simply wanting to help you. Is this a loyalty for a friend, soon to be sibling, or does it demonstrate a love that's existed since childhood.
Sentinel: The Witch Hunter has no surname which is just another thing to add to his unnerving presence. He's been tasked to keep you alive during the final test of your Dragon Seeker training. All the other apprentices are afraid of him, but he seems to have formed a peculiar attachment to you. Even when you've finished your training he remains by your side as you face everything thrown at you. What is it that keeps him by your side? Duty, loyalty, or that soft affection you sometimes catch hidden in his eyes?
Naxok: A pirate captain of a race that should not exist. All logic says you should be afraid of Naxok, but when he treats sea monsters like cats and sings way off key while hanging from a rope that may or may not be important, you can't help but see a much different side of the man who should be your enemy. He's saved your life several times, but is there something special about you or is he just a good man?
Albien: The young king is the leader of Erdholyss a land filled with people you were told were myths. Regardless of how the Empire has treated his people, he immediately offers you hospitality, and seems to be one of the few who hold the answers you so desperately seek. In spite of his amiableness, there's a sadness that follows the king around like a cloud, but is it your place to try to brighten it?
Gaderous "Gat" Archon: You first meet the physician when he's stitching up your wounds, but all you really know about him, is that he's medically trained, the single most attractive being you've met in your life, and all your companions strongly dislike him. Still, he doesn't disguise his interest in you, nor the romantic nature of it. The only questions is: can you trust it?

Pathfinder Ancestries - From a First Timer!
Ok: I have to say - I love the sparks of creativity firing as I read the pathfinder ancestries. I've never looked at or opened Pathfinder 2e, but back when I first started to get into RPG's back in 2012-2015, I was introduced by means of Pathfinder 1e, and My brothers and I (Who never played an actual game) spend countless hours making character after character, checking it against the rules, and comparing builds and backstories.
Well, with this whole Debacle that's pushed me away from 5e DnD, I've delved back into Pathfinder with 2e, and oh am I enjoying myself already!
I just wanted to talk about some of my favorite ancestries:
First and Foremost - The ANADI!
I love Anansi, and I love the fact that this ancestry seems like a homage to that legend - Spiders, who become people! I cannot tell you the sheer number of role-play and storytelling options that come to mind with a race that learned how to shapeshift specifically so they could be less terrifying to other inteligent species in order to interact with the wider world - and their ancestral feats are fun, thematic, and fit in great! I have made two characters for Pathfinder 2e in preparation for some games, and one of them is and Anadi Gunslinger- this is going to be fun. Tons of options to customize your shapeshifting abilities, spider and human forms, and your abilities in both.
LESHY - Adorable! If I ever played one, I would love to play as a group of Leshy's out to tackle the world. Lots of tiny, cute plant-people trying to survive a wider world without dying - it would be a hilarious one / four shot.
NAGAJI - Yuan-ti ish, but not evil? Fascinating! I love the philosophical bent of this group of snake-people - they have a lot of the things I enjoy about the Yuan Ti, but the fact that their culture is completely unfamiliar, means that encountering them would be a novel experience for me - I don't know if I would rather play one, or play a normal character running into them, but I would love to explore the implications of this culture.
ANDROID - Always been a favorite of mine. When I took up DnD in 2018 I was sad they didn't have androids, and Warforged just didn't scratch the same itch - mostly but not quite humanoids trying to survive a world that doesn't understand technology? With a mind that uploads and then downloads a new soul every so often? Fascinating implications if your character's body was an adventurer as well, and you run into someone who "Knows" you.
FLESHWARPS- I AM SO EXCITED THIS IS AN ANCESTRY OPTION. I was low key obsessed with the flesh warping process in Pathfinder 1e, and the dark elves experiments, the fact that they could create entire other creatures by dunking people into their warping pits. I love that this is intentionally a very customizable class, and just...super creepy. Comes with automatic backstory too - if your character is a Fleshwarp, what were they before? How have they taken to their twisted transformation? I would love to explore these themes someday.
GHORAN - PLANT PEOPLE! They remind me of one of the magical races from the Beyonders Series by Brandon Mull - plant-people with a seed that they can regrow from, giving them functional immortality so long as they can re-plant and grow the seed they stem from. A bit of personality shenanigans when they regrow too, which could be run to role-play if your character's personality shifts a little after "Dying" and being re-planted. I'd probably home-brew them a little bit to be more humanoid in some ways... but I'd have to play them as is first before making any changes.
KASHRISHI - RHINO BUG SURVIVALISTS! Hyper adaptable stubby rhino-people, which a magical ability to adapt to their environment with each generation. These guys would be cool to see, or role-play, I'd love to give it a try someday.
That's all, Might post on this topic randomly later. :D

My issue with that scene is also what you like about it in a way. My issues is that yes your character becomes nothing, they become an icon, no longer a person. But they can't address that, not even as a though not even with solas the next moment. The game never addresses it. Not even a silent option to determine what your inquisitor thinks.
And I think it's because they didn't think about the scene coming across like that. They really didn't think it may not have fit the interpretation of the player. We have to remember races and other player customizations options were added later in development. The inquisitor was meant to be this very defined character, the more player customizable inquisitor came later. So this scen was not originally written with the idea that a non human inquisitor may not be andastrian.
I do think sometimes art can become bigger than what it was originally. The game, as we have it officially never addresses the possibility the inquisitor may feel uncomfortable, just as it never addresses most of how becoming a religious icon nay be burdensome whether you want it or not. The game suffers from a rocky development and it shows. When you start looking in the right places quests come apart and you can easily tell where content is missing or when content was patched on later. .
I love inquisition thou, it really shows the writers and the dev team really cared about it despite having to deal with a mine greedy monster like EA having the final say on everything
'I hate the dawn will come scene it is so cringe' yes, yes it is and this is exactly why I think it is also good! This is not a scene where you're supposed to feel awestruck by the song or whatever!! You are SUPPOSED TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE!! This is a scene written to make you react as your character probably would to becoming a symbol rather than a person. This is THE moment where everyone gathered around YOU sing in unison that you are Something Other, Something More. The moment where your character may realize just How Much this all is, or think that it's ridiculous, because they cannot be All That Mighty, because they are just a person, but no, not anymore. 'I wish we could skip it' NO!! No, you cannot escape the scene, because you can't escape the crowd around you, your situation, the position in which you are put in. You are now the center of everything for all of these people surrounding you. You are now nothing, for who you normally are does not matter anymore.

Running Vests for Women: Key Features to Look For
For women who love to run, having the right gear is paramount to enjoying a successful and comfortable experience. Among the most essential items in a female runner's wardrobe is a running vest women can rely on. Designed for performance and convenience, running vests have become increasingly popular due to their practical features and benefits. This article will explore the key features to look for when selecting a running vest, ensuring that every woman can find the perfect fit for her running needs.
Purpose and Design
The primary purpose of a running vest is to provide a lightweight and comfortable solution for carrying essentials while running. Unlike traditional backpacks, running vests are designed to fit snugly against the body, minimizing movement and bounce during runs. This design helps to keep the runner focused on their performance rather than adjusting their gear.
When considering a running vest, it is essential to examine its overall design. The best running vests will feature a streamlined silhouette, ensuring that they do not add unnecessary bulk. Many women runners appreciate vests that come in a variety of colors and styles, allowing them to express their personal style while maintaining functionality.
Material and Comfort
Comfort is a paramount consideration when choosing a running vest. The fabric should be lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking to keep the body cool and dry during runs. Vests made from synthetic materials, such as polyester or nylon, often provide the best performance, as they are designed to wick sweat away from the skin.
Additionally, it's important to look for features that enhance comfort, such as flatlock seams to prevent chafing and adjustable straps for a customizable fit. A vest that fits well will allow for freedom of movement without feeling restrictive. Many runners have shared their positive experiences with vests that offer a second-skin feel, which can make all the difference during long-distance runs.
Storage Capacity
One of the standout features of a running vest women appreciate is its storage capacity. A good running vest should provide ample space to securely carry essentials such as a phone, keys, energy gels, and even hydration options.
Consider a running vest that comes with multiple pockets, including zippered compartments for secure storage. Many modern running vests feature front pockets that are easily accessible, allowing runners to grab what they need without stopping. Additionally, some vests are designed to accommodate hydration bladders or bottles, providing a convenient way to stay hydrated during longer runs.
Fit and Adjustability
Finding the right fit is crucial for any running gear, and a running vest is no exception. Many women runners find that vests with adjustable features, such as straps or side panels, allow for a more tailored fit. This is particularly important for those who may prefer to wear base layers or additional clothing underneath their vests, as an adjustable fit can accommodate different outfits.
Moreover, a properly fitted running vest will help reduce movement and bounce, ensuring that the essentials remain secure while running. Runners often share their experiences of how an adjustable vest can make a significant difference, especially during high-intensity workouts or races.
Reflective Elements for Safety
Safety is an essential consideration for any runner, especially for those who run in low-light conditions. Many running vests come equipped with reflective elements that enhance visibility during early morning or evening runs. Look for vests that incorporate reflective strips or logos, as these features can help ensure that runners are seen by drivers and others in their surroundings.
Women runners frequently emphasize the importance of visibility for their safety, making reflective elements a key feature to consider when selecting a running vest.
Ease of Maintenance
Another important aspect to consider is the ease of care and maintenance for running vests. Many vests are designed to be machine washable, which is an advantage for busy runners who may not have time for complicated cleaning routines.
When purchasing a running vest, check the care instructions to ensure that it can withstand regular washing without losing its shape or functionality. Durable materials that are resistant to wear and tear will extend the life of the vest, making it a worthwhile investment for those who run frequently.
Conclusion: Find Your Perfect Running Vest at Pure Running
In conclusion, selecting the right running vest women can greatly enhance the running experience. By considering key features such as purpose and design, material and comfort, storage capacity, fit and adjustability, reflective elements for safety, and ease of maintenance, women can find a vest that meets their unique needs.
For those in search of the perfect running vest, Pure Running offers an excellent selection designed with female runners in mind. Representation at Pixelberry: The Follow-Up
One year ago, on June 15, 2020, Pixelberry released a statement regarding representation at the company. Here is the LINK to the original blog post, and here was MY RESPONSE. Oh, how naïve and optimistic I was. It contained a list of goals and promises they hoped to accomplish within a year. Well, a year has passed, and here is my attempt to hold PB accountable. I'll be going over the five main points of their representation plan and if they achieved what they promised. All criticisms are about content released after June 15th. Long post beware, but I'm not putting it under a read more because I feel like it's important for all to see.
1. Commitment to diversity of Love Interests - FAIL
We’ve already been moving towards having Love Interests have customizable skin tones. We will continue to do this with some stories, while also having some characters with clear ethnic identities. At the same time when we have multiple love interests of different ethnicities, we are aiming for those Love Interests to have equal game time.
"LIs with customizable skin tones" mean they come in three flavours: white, black, and ambiguously Asian/Latinx interchangeably. So far I have rarely seen an LI as connected to their culture/ethnicity as Rafael Aveiro, and he just talked about his Vovo's food if he ever were on screen. They had many chances with the other OH LIs as well. Even Ayna Seth and Tatum Mendoza were confirmed to be Indian and Filipino, respectively, though FA gets a little leeway, as it was set in a fictional west-European continent.
As for equal game time? I'm sure the biggest example we can all think of was the mess that was Open Heart 3, which was written during the hiatus (which only existed because they were going to straight up kill Rafael in Book 2). Game time was not equal among LIs, and the white male LI was heavily favoured. PB also continues to pay female LIs dirt by giving them no screen time. In addition to that, LGBT+ players, who are consistently underrepresented, receive one (1) unprepared pride month survey, prpbably only because someone asked them about it on Twitter.
This is the meat and potatoes of everything because it's what they're outputting to their audience. It's what the people see. Given that things haven't been going so well lately in this department, consider this promise a big fat fail.
2. More authentic and diverse hairstyles for people of color - QUESTIONABLE
Our team will focus on providing more authentic and representative hairstyles. We are prioritizing these hairstyles outside of our normal book processes and will introduce them in new books as they are ready.
While, yes, they have added two new hairstyles in WEH, they also just took Jade Bonet's hair and recycled it for LoA F!MC. PB recycles all their hair more often than not.
3. More diverse book covers - QUESTIONABLE
This is an initiative we started in January of this year. As a result the number of Black, Latinx, Asian, Native American, Pacific Islander, mixed, and other characters on new book covers increased from 35% of characters in 2019 to 60% characters in the first half of 2020. However, the number of black characters is still not high enough this year. More are already scheduled for books later this year. We will make sure that Black characters are well represented on our covers in the future.
"Diverse" does not just mean by race, but also gender, sexual orientation, etc. FA has the only recent MLM cover. And don't tell me that the FA and LoA covers are any different from each other. The only black characters on covers are Zoey Wade (QB), and Black!Gabe Ricci (LoA) and Bastien (WB), which aren't even their canon races unless you choose them to be. This is the case for many single-LI books, such as Cassian Keane (W:ABR, which technically premiered on Mar. 16, but the sentiment is the same), Sam Dalton (TNA), and Dakota Winchester (WEH). Not to mention the customizable/multi LI books like DS, RT, BaBu2, MTFL, etc. Majority of these covers are just cishet couples delicately cradling each other's bodies or whatever. And we're not even gonna get into how PB literally put the Open Heart LIs in order of their favouritism on Book 3's cover.
4. Writers/Staff - QUESTIONABLE
We will be engaging in professional training on historical and current racism for our writers to ensure more of them have a better understanding and more context for views of diverse characters in Choices. We will also create a program that gives more authority to people of color in the studio to advise writers and artists on more authentic portrayals in both writing and art of black, brown, and minority characters.
A story with a Black-led cast is something I have asked for in the past, but failed to follow-up on. We will very likely start this with a Black-led cast story led by Chelsa, one of Pixelberry's Black writers.
We will increase the number of diverse writers we source for new stories, starting with hiring more Black and Latinx writers to lead the charge.
For all teams at Pixelberry we will actively work to bring in more Black and Latinx candidates with the goal to increase the number of Black and Latinx employees at Pixelberry. Although Pixelberry is over 50% female, on teams where females are not at 50% we will actively work to source more female candidates.
This promise seemed like a copout from the start because we have no way of knowing who works on what at PB unless we very meticulously stalk their LinkedIn or Twitter or whatever. We have no solid statistics except for what they feed us. I do know, however, that they recently let the Ms. Match writers go and were hiring for external writers, but there really is no way of knowing what's going on behind-the-scenes with their 112+ employees, and of course there would be NDAs involved. We are yet to see a book with an all-Black cast, and receive rare development updates with new books. Actually, I think a really good way to promote diversity is to do staff showcases on their social media. Just a way to show the public who's responsible for what. Writers, game devs, the art team, etc. Don't think it'll happen, but it's always a good idea.
5. Donations - QUESTIONABLE
Pixelberry will also be making $100,000 in donations to Black Girls Code, the Black Writers Collective, and the Latinx Writers Collective at Techqueria. Rather than as a lump sum, we will be making these donations over the course of a year to remind us that we are not making short term changes, but are committed to long term sustainable actions. We’ll also be donating up to an additional $100k from profits for this week, 6/15-6/21.
There has been no proof, no receipts, no evidence from PB that they have donated anything to anyone, and as far as we're concerned, their word doesn't mean anything. No news or updates news about it. I would love to believe that they did something, but as you can see, I've become quite the pessimist. BWC still uses PB's old logo (like, pre-Choices) on their sponsors page, and the last interaction they've had with BGC was in 2013. They don't even follow each other on Instagram. In fact, BGC received a huge donation from MacKenzie Scott, formerly Bezos last July. Yes, that billionaire Bezos, and that got coverage from them. Obviously donations don't need to be for publicity, but in this case I think it's important there should be proof. Again, it's really hard to tell with these behind-the-scenes things, but given how PB loves to gloat and hates to keep promises, we can assume that none of this happened.
~~~
So, what's the takeaway? That PB's fallen down the drainhole of shitty content and empty promises and has no intention of climbing out as long as they still make that bank? Seems counterproductive, because good representation gets good feedback and income. They pump out bad books with barebones "representation" if you can call it that, then drop their precious merch and pretend all is fine and dandy. But just as I suspected one year ago, none of this matters, because people forget things, and people move on, and shit gets swept under rugs. Yet, here I am, yelling at a company in a post I for sure doubt they'll see. Because if not me, then who?
@playchoices Your move. It's been your move for a year now. When will you actually make it?
If you liked Dragon Age Masterlist
If you’re anything like me, you’re into niche market, high fantasy, single player RPGs, preferably with a historical setting and romance options. So if you’re looking for a new game, here I am with some suggestions!
Sorted by studio:
Bethesda:
Oblivion (2006)
“In the shadow of evil, a hero will rise from the ashes of a fallen empire. The gates have been opened, and the battle has begun. Only one thing can save the world from Mehrunes Dagon and the demonic hordes of Oblivion. The true heir of the Septim line must be found and restored to the Imperial throne. The fate of the world rests in the hands of one. Find him, and shut the jaws of Oblivion.”
The Elder Scrolls series were my gateway into RPGs and hold a special place in my heart. Oblivion features a wide open world, immersive combat, and the ability to customize race, class, and gender.
Skyrim (2011)
“The Empire of Tamriel is on the edge. The High King of Skyrim has been murdered. Alliances form as claims to the throne are made. In the midst of this conflict, a far more dangerous, ancient evil is awakened. Dragons, long lost to the passages of the Elder Scrolls, have returned to Tamriel. The future of Skyrim, even the Empire itself, hangs in the balance as they wait for the prophesized Dragonborn to come; a hero born with the power of The Voice, and the only one who can stand amongst the dragons.”
I have sunk so many hours into this game and still have not experienced all there is to experience. Just like Oblivion, Skyrim offers the ability to customize your character and find a play style that suits you. A huge open world offers tons of opportunity for exploration and questing. You could play this game many, many hours and not even touch the main quest if you wanted to.
BioWare:
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (2021)
Just do it. Just fucking do it I’m still sobbing I’ve never had a game wreck me in this way. I might possibly like it more than Dragon Age which feels sacrilegious to say but it was so good. You follow Commander Shepard (customizable) for three whole games and the choices have serious consequences. Also, romance. Truthfully this might be the most well written storyline I’ve ever seen in a video game. Also, same studio as Dragon Age.
CD Projekt:
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (2015)
I’ll let the website description speak for itself, but Witcher III was good enough that I didn’t mind being forced to play as a man (those who know me know that I exclusively prefer to play women and often dislike games where I can’t do so)! The characters that make up this story are captivating and suck you into their world, leaving you with some tough choices to make. Also, bonus points for romance! (Yen is one of my all time favorite characters, Triss never stood a chance for me. Sorry Triss fans 😂)
Larian:
Divinity Original Sin 2 (2017)
“The Divine is dead. The Void approaches. And the powers lying dormant within you are soon to awaken. Choose your role in a BAFTA-winning story, and explore a world that reacts to who you are, and the choices you make. With five races to choose from, and an adventure playable solo or as a party of up to four, lay waste to an oppressive order in a world afraid of magic. Become the God the world so desperately needs.”
Full disclosure, I have not finished playing this one yet and will update when I do, but what I’ve played so far has been great! A classic, turn-based RPG that allows you a wide range of character customization. I find this game incredibly satisfying to be a rogue (my preferred class) because it lets me live my dream of throwing knives at people. Also, romance!
Baldur’s Gate III beta (2020)
“An ancient evil has returned to Baldur's Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out. The fate of Faerûn lies in your hands. Alone, you may resist. But together, you can overcome. Gather your party.”
Fair warning, as of my most recent update to this post (March 30th, 2021) this game is still in a beta phase, which means it is NOT complete and has aspects that are missing, glitchy, or subject to change. With that being said, I’m so obsessed. It’s so, so good already and is only getting better. Another wide open world to explore with a group of companions with strong and sometimes clashing personalities, choices are abundant in this game and will affect how your party members think of you. This game so far gives me the feeling that choices are complicated and aren’t always easy to tell which is morally right, which I personally love. Also, I can be a sarcastic ass with a good heart, which is always fun. Astarion basically owns me now, but if you can resist him there are plentiful other romance choices as well! Customization is already a wider range than I’ve seen in most RPGs and they haven’t even finished the character creator yet, which has me SO excited for the finished product. Also - good hair?!??!! I love it!
Lionhead:
Fable III (2010)
“Lead a revolution to take control of Albion, fight alongside your people, and experience love and loss while preparing to defend the kingdom against a looming threat. Your choices as ruler will lead to consequences felt across the entire land.”
I’ll be honest, this one isn’t my favorite on the list, but was good enough to still make it! This game allows you to choose between playing as the prince or the princess on a quest to save your kingdom from itself, and then a greater threat as well. The game takes place in a kingdom loosely modeled after industrial England, and what did score it some major points were (SPOILER WARNING - skip the purple if you don’t want to know!) that the last act of the game lets you play as the monarch, where you are forced to make some tough decisions in order to save your kingdom. It is very easy to back yourself into a corner, pinch pennies in order to fund the army and save the kingdom, but make your citizens hate you because of it. You’re gonna have to be very, very careful, which is something I did really enjoy about this game. (I’ve heard Fable II was better, and that’s also on my list to try, will update in the future!)
Nintendo:
Fire Emblem Three Houses (2019)
“War is coming to the continent of Fódlan. Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros, which hosts the prestigious Officer’s Academy within its headquarters. You are invited to teach one of its three mighty houses, each comprised of students brimming with personality and represented by a royal from one of three territories. As their professor, you must lead your students in their academic lives and in turn-based, tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome. Which house, and which path, will you choose?”
Currently playing this one and I’m so addicted! This one is slightly outside of my usual taste but it has made me interested in playing more games like it. The player controls Byleth (you can rename them if you wish), who becomes a professor of combat and battle tactics despite their young age at a monastery and finds themself in charge of a house of students. Battles are tactics and strategy based and classes are highly customizable. I sunk like 30 hours into this game in the last three days. I won’t say more about the plot to avoid spoilers, but it’s been a ton of fun and also has slow burn romance
Spiders:
Greedfall (2019)
This game destroyed my soul in the best way and when I finished it I immediately started a new game to play it again. You play as Lady or Lord De Sardet, Legate of the Congregation of Merchants and effectively the right hand of your cousin, who has been appointed governor of your new colony on the island. While I enjoy the combat in this game, which allows you the choice between one handed, two handed, magic, and pistols or rifles (save that ammo for when you really need it!), this game focuses heavily on diplomacy and relations. Be careful what information you give to whom and how you treat every decision. The enemies you make early on might be people you need on your side later. I also love that choices aren’t always clearly right or wrong, and often are more complicated than they first appear. Even the best intentions can sometimes go awry.
Ubisoft:
Assassin’s Creed, Syndicate (2015)
“London, 1868. In the heart of the Industrial Revolution, lead your underworld organization and grow your influence to fight those who exploit the less privileged in the name of progress”
Another one that I’ll admit, I haven’t finished, and is definitely the odd one out on the list because it’s set in Victorian England, but I was having fun with what I had played so far before Greedfall distracted me. In this game, you alternate between controlling twins Jacob and Evie Frye as you explore and liberate London while meeting famous historical figures and running a gang on the side.
Assassin’s Creed, Origins (2017)
“Ancient Egypt, a land of majesty and intrigue, is disappearing in a ruthless fight for power. Unveil dark secrets and forgotten myths as you go back to the one founding moment: The Origins of the Assassin’s Brotherhood.”
In the spirit of honesty, I haven’t started this one yet, but I am so confident that I’m gonna love it when I do that it’s here anyway. I’ve purchased it, and will get to it soon, I swear! In the meantime, I wanted to put it here because I’m confident some of you will enjoy it. Will come back with a review once I know more.
Assassin’s Creed, Odyssey (2018)
“Write your own epic odyssey and become a legendary Spartan hero in Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey, an inspiring adventure where you must forge your destiny and define your own path in a world on the brink of tearing itself apart. Influence how history unfolds as you experience a rich and ever-changing world shaped by your decisions.”
Y’all this game owned my soul for a while. I’ve sunk so many hours into it. You have a choice to play as either Kassandra or Alexios and navigate the wonders of Ancient Greece. The world is stunning, the choices are important, and this game took a big step for the assassins creed series in becoming a true RPG. I can’t recommend this one enough, you should absolutely go for it!
Assassin’s Creed, Valhalla (2020)
“Become Eivor, a legendary Viking warrior. Explore England's Dark Ages as you raid your enemies, grow your settlement, and build your political power in the quest to earn a place among the gods in Valhalla.”
This game is brand new, hot off the press, and has already been a massive hit. I have only JUST started playing it and am about an hour in, but so far so good! It’s here on my recommendations list because of its wild popularity and because I’ve already enjoyed other games in this series, so I feel confident that some of my fellow dragon age fans will enjoy it. Will update again once I get further in.
Other games on my To Be Played list (otherwise known as things I don’t want to recommend because I know almost nothing about them but will update here after I know more)
-Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2
-Horizon Zero Dawn
-Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
-Fable 1 and 2
-Kingdoms of Amalur
-Breath of the Wild
-Crimson Desert (not out yet but I’m intrigued)
#will update as I find more#if you liked dragon age#dragon age#video games#video game recommendations#op#rpgs#masterlist
Every now and then I feel bad for giving 0 context for anything, so gonna quickly summarize my story stuff under the cut
The Traveler’s Found (TTF)
Skye, Gill, Marth, Kydin, Leo, Kira, Krieg, Heiwa, Narcissa, Sebastian, Vadim, Bahemek, Xenon, etc
TTF is hard to summarize because it has 10 story arcs and they all lead into the other, but the plot begins with ‘A wizard terrorist attacks the king of Hou’lu sending two girls on a quest to stop him’ which sounds so simple doesn’t it -sobs-
Very adventure, political intrigue, slice of life elements
They basically travel all over the world, and I’ll quickly summarize what that’s like by listing each countries major influences
Hou’lu: Italian Renaissance, China
Sunobor: Medieval Germany, Japan, Inuit
Haldon: Folk Mexican, Folk Italian
Lavynna; Byzantine, some inspo from India to structure of things?
Gehinna: Ancient Hebrew
Parappa: Egypt-Germany
North Desert: Russia-Arabic
Harpies (more a tribe): Maasai
TTF of them all gets the most complicated but very incrementally, so it’s the hardest to express much on. But they get a cool hard magic system based on 10 elements so
Also TTF dragons are sentient, intelligent, and morally complex
—
The Miyoré Schism
A prequel to ttf by about 900 years
Faolan, Mien, Enlai, whatever I name the girl, Jiao
The plot here is a bit simpler
What happens when the one who pulls the blade only those Chosen by God can touch is among the race of people thought to be destined to serve?
This focuses largely on the Sha’li of East Hou’lu. As a race they have very distinct white hair, pale skin, and red eyes. At this time in history, monster taming was very common as well, so most the characters have a family or personal monster. Sha’li also have an ability to become “invisible” but in actuality they are lowering their ‘presence’ or ‘noticibility’ to all non-Sha’li
This story draws largely from Tibet for its aesthetics
—
Kingdoms
Ariella, James, Charles, Kiba
I have uprooted a lot about this story and not yet relayed it, but so far
A girl who wanted to become a soldier but was refused strikes out on adventure to do what she can for her country on her own- but to her chagrin gets a tag along
This story likely will have a soft magic system, and is definitely still based on Victorian and Japanese aesthetics. It’s actually a specific era of Japanese history but I can’t remember which. Possibly 16th c?
Despite this, it’s a low tech world.
Most fantasy type creatures/races do show up in Kingdoms, unlike my other stories
Dragons exist in Kingdoms but are universally evil and nobody has ever killed one
—
Magic and Cannons (MnC)
A wip name still
Cusick, Agathe, Romana, Kordell, Levi, Maureen, Ames, Sung-jin
I’m still figuring put the plot to this honestly, but the first bit is definitely
‘A narcissistic man is captured as a PoW and must find a way to escape’
There’s just three countries of any importance to this world, and it’s much less whimsical in nature than the others, being closer to reality in some ways, and having a lot more tech. Though it vibes as subtly cartoony in how characters have slightly exaggerated aspects to their personalities and behaviors.
Delemar is the country Cusick is from and is based on Wild West in many ways, they’re a very independent people which can be good and bad, they also give no hecks about safety and are pretty wild in general
Choson is where Romana is from and they are much more interested in normalcy and order, which can be both good and bad. They prefer reptiles and fish as pets to mammals actually, which feels important to mention. If you know much about history, I suppose it’s clear they draw a lot from Korea for aesthetics.
Choson is also a very mixed population in terms of race, which Delemar is very much not.
Kievan is where Agathe hails from and is based on Russia. In each case I tried sticking to 1850s-1900s ish for my influences of these countries, though socially they are very diff.
Kievan has an affinity for wine and is the only country that appreciates using electricity for power. They have harsh winters, especially compared to the other two countries which tend to be more tropical in climates. Kievan is less developed so far, but they tend towards legalism there, and while that can be bad, they are also the one not involved in a pointless war, so
MnC is what I call glasspunk, Delemar and Choson rely on ‘reactions’ for their energy sources, which I can only explain as ‘you know how if you mix two volatile liquids, they could explode? They harness the energy from such things’
This is possible because their magic system is a type of alchemy which has allowed them a lot of reactions not available to us, and with this they’ve been able to get treated glass which is nearly indestructible, great for containing anything they need.
Magic is still something within the individual, but in MnC the extent of what it does is change the properties of whatever you’re touching with your hands. If you specialize in using this and inventing things based off of things with changed properties, you’re called a mage.
MnC has a lot of strange tech this way, including trains, vehicles, customizeable guns, staves that through weird tech stuff can have sort of elemental effects, etc.
Electricity is not compatible with reactions btw, because it can cause them to explode outside of when they’re meant to, kinda like smoking by a bunch of canisters of gasoline, it might be a lil risky. So societies that use reactions do not use electricity and have things in place to get rid of it, and societies that use electricity don’t use reactions. Combining them can get cool tech, but is inherently risky.
oh whoops I went off there, huh. Oh well it’s not seen as often as the other types of societies/magics I listed so
Dragons in MnC are animals (technically wyverns?) and have been domesticated to be work animals. No fire breath but they do have a strong venom, I think a neurotoxin type?? And the insides of their mouths are orange 👀 oh and the domesticated ones are reflective like mirrors ish
—
Children of the Little Mine (CotLM)
Geno
This is the only one I plan to make a novel, because it’s set in 1950′s-1960′s New York City and I don’t care about those aesthetics at all
I don’t have it planned out very far for plot, but basically a gremlin thief boy of 17 has a strange ability to manipulate how gravity effects him, and seemingly nobody else in the world has this. But one day during a break and entering situation, Geno finds another boy with an ability, and from there they decide to try sticking together a bit to figure out why, and maybe put together a heist against a mafia boss in the mean time (two stealy boys)
This is very close to being historical fiction aside from abilities, which are /extremely/ rare in this world. I’m very inspired by Artemis Fowl and A Separate Peace for tone, and plan to have middleschool boys as my target audience. Though I love fantasy and such, this one’s still a bit close to my heart anyways
Anyways literally nobody asked for this I just do this to myself. I seriously wanna start practicing comic making skills, but I can’t do that too much for a daily thing when I can usually put in an hour at best. I’m trying to find a sweet spot for it all, but it may yet be awhile before I can post literally anything that sheds light on who the heck any of the chars I post are.
I want to though, and I’ve been running this blog for years now, so best to assume it’ll get there someday. I have still written a lot and planned out things, so progress still happens behind the scenes. Aside from the last few months but that’s not uncommon for this time of year. If you actually read this, thanks euchjsd I don’t think many will, but having it here makes me feel a bit better
🔥spicy opinions on D&D and/or tieflings
Buckle up.
Druid is best class but gets shafted by wizards themselves and all 3 of the upcoming ua circles getting published officially need heavy reworking that I hope they get but I don't trust Wizards to see a few positive comments on the subclasses for a class they already don't care about and not just slap them into the book as is without any thought.
The fantasy race issue could literaly be solved with a single word change to a more accurate term of species.
In the same vein the actual root of at least 5e's diversity issue is their own unwillingness to publish world lore content. Literaly there is no content for the entire rest of the planet outside the sword coast that isn't from previous editions. They couldn't even be bothered to give any details about Kara-Tur or Zakhara.
Similarly also, wizards are way too reliant on old content and homebrew to fill the gaps of their content while they go off to publish crossover books with uterly useless and entirely dismissable content in it. Why is there not multiple monster manuals by now?
All official artificers suck and miss the appeal of attificers and I will not play one until i find a homebrew one that is appropriate.
Sick of saying "I guess I got to homebrew it" to increasingly basic things that become increasingly unjustified to not exist with each passing year of lack of content book sold for 80$.
Revised ranger is genuinely good an enjoyable and I love them.
Druids should have web.
It's not OC, it's PC. I mean, insert the "I guess" meme here since by loose basic definition it'snot wrong, but no. It's PC. Way too many things are called OCs.
People who impose the no metal rule on druids are old fashioned and its a stupid rule that makes no sense and is a hold over from old d&d in the same way the alignment system and the expectation your paladin is lawful good is, whose only justification is if you only run them as classic poorly thought out "robots eat your soul" fantasy druids part of a hippy cult that probably thinks GMOs are evil and have no actual knowledge of nature. I really hate this rule, if you use it it should be a character quirk not a rule imposed on the whole class especially in an edition that tries to encourage not playing "class as character" and reflavouring.
Unless you do it badly like turning a 3d20+5 into a 1d4-1 most players won't notice you skewed the roll so just do it.
Pathfinder is neither the best thing ever nor the worst thing ever. Its slightly better 3.5 with more content. It's not so different enough to get up in arms one way or the other about.
You are not quirky and unique for making your tiefling purple. Your tiefling still looks like you made a generic hipster, slapped horn thoughtlessly one their forehead, and then used a colour slider. You forget exactly how much freedom you have in designing a tiefling even if you pretend the description in the player's guide is absolute law as though the book itself doesn't remind you its only a general guide it encourages you to tweak. Tieflings are one of the easiest customizeable races and your attempt to be unique and different while creating the most standard of tiefling bard manwhores ironically reveals how basic and uncreative you are by trying too hard. You have created a reverse situation where making a tiefling with a human skin tone actually stands out more in your attempt to stand out and be quirky. And no, giving them a pride flag undershirt does not make them more distinct and is not a substitutefor actual character. Give your character some actual character rather than using the fantasy equivelant of green skinned space babe as a crutch replacement for character design and personality.
(Unless a standard tiefling bard is what you want to play for whatever reason , then go ahead. This is at people who's goal was to make something special and unique just by making their pc a tiefling for the sake of standing out. Even then, if thats what your group likes to do still go ahead and do it, it's just annoying to see constantly.)
On the opposite end or in a way a similar end, and this directed at a very specific series of reddit posts I saw the other day so apologies for getting a bit ranty here, don't tell people how they have to run their tieflings just because they want to make a silly gay rainbow character and not a big scary demonkin. You're the kinda person who gets mad when people don't play drow as evil backstabbing rogues, you lorehumper in an edition that hates lore. There is nothing wrong with a cute tiefling, or an "effeminate" tiefling, or a tiefling that doesn't suffer persecution constantly, or someone wanting to be purple instead of flaming red, or if they're as common as humans. It's not destroying the game for people to not play the example base character from the player's handbook. If that's how you want to play go play with people who want to play that way, leave Flavourtown the pink tiefling unicorn sorcerer and his boyfriend Redeemed Drow #48501 alone to play in their group. Criticize their choices all you want but don't tell them they can't play the game how they see fit to and that if you end up in the same group you'll punish them. They may be annoying but you're reprehensible and toxic if you do that.
Also no, playing a tiefling does not mean you liked h*m*st*ck.
Staff of flowers is the best magic item.
DEN OF GEEK CRITICS PICKS
Django Unchained
The second of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist history lessons, Django Unchained is a provocative, post-modern Western film that mixes the widescreen sensibilities of Sergio Leone with Tarantino’s own gonzo impulses to create something hyper-violent, subversively funny, and more than a bit uncomfortable. Jamie Foxx stars as a slave freed by a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz. Waltz won an Oscar for his performance as the kind German that takes in the stoic but savvy Django as his partner. Together, they travel the pre-Civil War South, killing slavers and savage men. Eventually, they embark on a more personal mission, as Django intends to free his beloved wife from a sadistic plantation owner played by a scenery-chewing Leonardo DiCaprio. With anachronistic needle-drops, hands-over-eyes horrors, and more blood than a donation bank, Django Unchained is an epic, entertaining revenge fantasy for the ages.
Silver Linings Playbook
From director David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook is a screwball romantic comedy for the modern age. Despite inviting, yet livewire lead performances from Jennifer Lawerence and Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook really shines as an ensemble: Robert DeNiro, Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker and Anupam Kher bring fully-realized characters to life in just a handful of scenes. Based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name, Silver Linings Playbook finds Bradley Cooper as a man who has been released from a psychiatric hospital a bit too soon. He’s frantically trying to prove that he’s bettered himself in an effort to win back his wife, but when he meets the equally unstable and filterless character played by Jennifer Lawerence, unusual sparks fly. Combining the familiar tropes of a sports film with unorthodox romantic leads, Silver Linings Playbook is a crowd-pleasing watch that creates harmony out of dysfunction.
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
It never mattered where Anthony Bourdain was going, we just wanted to be along for the ride. We lost the soulful, iconoclastic bad-boy of the culinary world far too soon, but he left behind a treasure trove of rewarding travelogues that tackled culture, social dynamics, and most importantly, food. Whether he was weighing in on a world-famous culinary hotspot or peeling back the curtain on a hole-in-wall gem, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations was always thoughtful, fearless, and never less than authentic. It’s the rare show that is as educational as it is entertaining, hosted by a candid host who knew how to travel, knew where to eat, but most crucially, knew how to connect with people. Reality TV doesn’t get realer than this.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Following the mind-boggling success of the original Halloween, director John Carpenter had a clever idea. Instead of churning out sequels starring Michael Meyers, Halloween would become an anthology series, with each new film telling a spooky tale centered on the October holiday. The concept was inevitably scrapped, but Halloween III: Season of the Witch suggests that maybe Carpenter and co. should have stuck to their guns. Taking inspiration from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and working off a concept that Carpenter described as “witchcraft meets the computer age,” Halloween III: Season of the Witch finds a doctor and the daughter of a toy maker trying to uncover the horrifying truth behind the town of Santa Mara, home to Silver Shamrock, the world’s largest manufacturer of Halloween masks. Intelligent, surprising, and disturbing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is due for a critical reevaluation that heralds it as one of the most ambitious horror movies of the ‘80s
Clerks II
With the recent announcement that Clerks III has started production, it’s the perfect time to revisit Kevin Smith’s first-sequel to his independent film phenomenon, Clerks. Clerks II picks up with our titular clerks Dante and Randall 10 years after the events of the first film. The Quick Stop has gone up in flames and been replaced with a Mooby’s fast food restaurant. Dante and Randall toil the day away with their sheltered co-worker Elias and too-cool for minimum wage manager Becky. While the film tackles adult male friendships and middle age complacency, it’s main appeal is still sitting around, shooting the shit with your pals and listening to their expletive-filled rants about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or whatever pop culture fascination that they’re hung up on. Come for the surprisingly poignant story about Dante deciding to leave his friend behind, stay for Jay, Silent Bob, and a donkey.
The coupling of these two marketplace mechanisms have been supported by analysis from London Business enterprise College displaying that a customer's propensity to buy is heightened when offered the alternative to trade-in a item or recoup some of its value. You phrased what editions you've played weird. cause at first I read it as you've played DnD 1e and 3.5e and Pathfinder 1e, 2e, 4e, and 5e. It took me like, 3 readthroughs to realize you meant DnD 1e, 3.5e, 4e and 5e and Pathfinder 1e & 2e. On that note, Pathfinder 2e is fairly new, yes? what's your opinion on it?
Sorry about the weird phrasing, I'd just woken up and wasn't wearing my glasses... which I do a lot when responding to things on this blog, now that I think about it. I should probably stop. I'm probably not going to.
Anyways! Pathfinder 2e. Not a huge fan. There's definitely a lot of really interesting elements in regards to character creation - racial backgrounds, detailed bits to help you really flesh out your character and make them more real and unique and fun - but they completely changed the action economy for combat, and I don't like it.
Leveling up and the actual math bits of character creation have actually become more complicated, because they saw 5e's proficiency bonuses and thought "What if there were different levels of proficiency?" and basically completely missed the point of the mechanic in the first place, which was to have one (1) number to add to things you're good at, not five or seven (I don't remember exactly how many proficiency levels they added), and they change for each ability and skill depending on your race and class. In doing this and getting rid of skill ranks, which were a number of points you got each level equal to your Intelligence modifier plus something, its been a while, which could be added to skills at player discretion, they actually destroyed a lot of the customizability that I and most Pathfinder/3.5 players so love. Like, what's the point in having such an extensive skill list if you can't have a rogue with a random talent for historical knowledge, or a sorcerer whose religious training was more thorough than the cleric's? The natural proficiencies of being a certain race or class still existed, sure, but they were more a flat bonus, a +1 or +2 to basic skills like Intimidation or Stealth or Acrobatics, and you could capitalize on them to min-max the hell out of your character or just leave them to ensure you're not totally hopeless in one thing and put those ranks into other skills to make your character more balanced.
In short, Paizo made themselves the Pathfinder equivalent of D&D's 4e, and I'm pretty disappointed.
i have enough to buy one of the dragon age games, but im not sure which one to get? they all sound so good !! do u have any recommendations??
OH ANON YOU’VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!!
it depends on what kind of experience you want!
each of the dragon age games are self-contained stories set in the same timeline, a few years apart. each has its own main character (customizable to your heart’s content) and each has its own cast of lovable npcs to be charmed by
they’re also connected stories that lead into each other! playing one gives you information important to understand the next one (not required per se, but sort of like watching marvel movies: if you watch the first avengers movie you’ll more understand the second one and etc.)
dragon age: origins is first, followed by dragon age 2, and finally dragon age: inquisition (dragon age 4 is currently being made)
pros and cons of each game:
origins:
the oldest, and it sure looks like it. the graphics are old, but dragon age origins has an EXTENSIVE selection of mods to choose from that you can tweak and edit to your preference (dragon age: redesigned is a perfect choice for this imo and one i use) the combat is reminiscent of pillars of eternity, so if you enjoyed that game you’ll thoroughly enjoy this one. this game is about a small band of unlikely heroes looking to save the world; sort of your typical fantasy story but it doesn’t mean it’s predictable. out of all three games it has the most in terms of skill selection and character builds. it also has the most in terms of dialogue choices and characterization; your character is not voiced, so the devs and writers had more freedom on that front.
(“do you need a ladder, so you can get off my back?”)
it also has the most, in my opinion, flexibility wrt world states (the current state of the world wrt a specific save file. world-states are basically shorthand for ‘the overall effect of the choices you have made and how they impacted thedas, the setting, at large’). for fear of spoiling i won’t say more but compared to dragon age 2 and dragon age inquisition, dragon age origins allows you WAY more options regarding the fate of your main characters and the country you play in.
da2:
the second in the series, this game is more focused on a small area over a long period of time. specifically: this game feels more down-to-earth, more about the relationships between people than about saving the world. the combat is similar to origins, but the skillsets have become more streamlined and condensed. there’s still a LOT of customization (wouldn’t be a dragon age game if it wasn’t) so no fear on that front; there’s less subclasses in this one though but that just means that you have more abilities wrt the one that you choose. less bigger choices for class progression, more smaller specific ones.
your character is voiced, and you can only choose your gender and appearance, not your race. that’s not a bad thing, of course, just that you start off as a human. this is the only dragon age game so far that has this restriction, but it’s not weaker overall for this decision. it allows for more focus on the interaction between your player character and the npcs in the game: you have a family who you can decide the dynamics between, you have a home, you have a city. you also have, interestingly enough, the choice to more solidly define your character’s personality in ways that will change how they can interact with the world.
(INTRODUCING THE THREE PERSONALITIES: BLUE, PURPLE, AND RED)
i think this game is interesting because it’s not your typical “heroic” story. it’s not about doing good for the sake of doing good, but doing good for the sake of survival and the struggle to stay afloat during turbulent times.
i will say dragon age 2′s greatest weakness is the lack of different maps, but since this game was made fairly quickly i can forgive that. the story is excellent, however.
inquisition:
the largest out of the three games, and the most visually impressive. the combat is the MOST streamlined in this game, and forces you to make strategic choices wrt your skill selection. While you can unlock as many skills as you want (so long as you have the ability points to spend) you can only take a few with you into each combat encounter, and skills cannot be swapped on the fly. (think of it as preparing spells at the beginning of each day in dnd, except instead of once per day it’s any time so long as you’re not in combat)
(or you can be like me and just shove walking bomb into your repertoire and rain hellfire and damnation on ur enemies……………………..coughs)
your character is voiced, but does not have a defined backstory; you are provided a nebulous idea of your character’s general background based on your race, but unlike origins and da2 it does not provide you an in-game cutscene or level to explore that background. inquisition starts you in media res of the newest global catastrophe, and has a middle ground in terms of dialogue between origins and da2. the dialogue wheel is still there, but the game doesn’t lock you into a personality type, allowing your character more flexibility in responses.
inquisition has the MOST in terms of raw content, with enough quests and things to do to have money and power (the in-game currency to unlock new areas and quests on the war table, your hub for interacting with the world at large) spilling out of your pockets by mid-to-late game. the boss fights are nothing to sneeze at either… me big love dragons :’)
as for story, this game feels more…….. political? and i don’t mean that it talks about real world politics i mean that you’re pretty much juggling saving the world and appeasing international powers the whole way through the game. inquisition is also VERY closely linked to dragon age 2′s storyline, so i can’t say more without spoiling that game as well. again, you don’t need to play the preceding dragon age to play the next one as you will be provided with that information in-game, but each game heavily influences the next one.
tl;dr:
you want story: pick any game
you want the FULL story: chronologically from origins -> da2 -> inquisition.
you want a highly customized main character, an underdog story, and a world that you can influence down to the smallest detail: origins
you want a more personalized story that deals with the raw, ugly relationships between people and a realistic take on the heroic journey: dragon age 2
you want streamlined combat, to take control of an international organization as both its religious and political leader, and cool boss fights: inquisition
i actually made a more meme-y post regarding the pros and cons of each game here if you don’t care about spoilers hgfjgf: [link]
#dragon age#long post#i should start tagging these informational posts as something but i don't know what#anon#ask
Civilization VI, A Brief Review
I've been playing Civilization since I was a child, starting with Civ I. I've also dabbled in all the 4X games I can get my hands on, starting with Test of Time and Alpha Centauri, and later into Warlock and Fallen Enchantress, and more recently into Thea and Imagine Earth (not exactly 4X, but similar and very fun). Of all of the 4X games I've ever played, my two favorites are Endless Legend and a very sophisticated mod made for Civilization IV called Wild Mana (which was in turn a mod made from the Fall from Heaven mod; and my understanding is that the mod creators went on to make the game called Warlock). Also, an honorary mention for Beyond Earth, which is the re-make of Alpha Centauri and is also excellent (and has a fantastic soundtrack).
I've decided to start playing a little Civ VI again these past few days to blow of some steam (and ironically conquer the Romans while playing the Egyptians – ha!). ("Steam" might be a pun here considering that Steam is my game provider – double ha!).
So now that you know Civilization VI isn't my favorite of them all (that's Endless Legend), let me tell what unique features Civ VI does have that I highly love and would love to see other 4X games adopt:
1. Inspiration/Eureka triggers that allow technologies to be partially researched. This mechanism essentially consists of optional mini-quests. (Like farm a resource to get half your research points toward Irrigation.)
2. Two tech trees: one for government-related abilities, and one for general technological advancements.
3. Customizable government structure where you choose policies and implement them into your government type, with each government type having a certain amount of slots for different kinds of policies.
4. Legacy impacts in future governments based on what government you had in the past.
5. Highly informative upper bar that tells you virtually everything at a glance, including your total amount of trade routes allowed and how many you currently have.
6. City states that provide interesting variation to the diplomatic landscape.
7. Cutomizable creation of religions where you get to choose the beliefs of the religion, and even its icon. This is very fun and I enjoy converting the world to my religion! (In my current game my invented religion is named Butterflies & Fae! Ha!)
Some things I would really like to see become part of Civilization VI, a future Civilization game, another 4X game, or some mods:
1. Tribal villages that aren't just some "bonus" that you race toward and get a one-time benefit from. I'd love to see 1-tile tribal villages that are an ongoing source of minor interactions and that have feelings about being within your territory. (For example, do you destroy them if they don't integrate? Can you bribe this tribe to integrate? Do you build them a reservation and are unable to use the tile, but you can still trade with them? Etc.) Imagine Earth has a feature similar to this.
2. More dynamic diplomatic relations, or at the least, less spammy/repetitive messages from them.
3. More deeply explorable map, with caves to enter, undersea territory to explore, etc.
4. Deep fantasy mods that overhaul the entire feel of the game the way Wild Mana did for Civ IV.
5. Dynamic weather impacts (perhaps similar to how it is done in Endless Legend). Okay, that's just some thoughts off the top of my head.
Overall, Civ VI is a good addition to the Civ games and holds its own as a unique Civilization experience, but I don't think it is nearly worth its full price. I'm glad I waited until it was on sale. Also, the soundtrack is meh, and they've done better before.
So there you have it, a totally spontaneous review of Civilization VI.
