I know I’m a lying liar at this point when it comes to updates, but this time I promise, chapter four of Let your heart be light is complete.
I added a very soft scene that felt very important and it kind of got away from me.
But it’s now 18,300 words instead of the usual 10,000, so I hope the extra long chapter makes up for some of the wait.
My fingers hurt and I have an AM serving shift, but I’ll edit as soon as I’m home from work and I’ll have it posted before that stupid football starts tomorrow.
I pinky promise this time 💕
#let your heart be light 🎄#it’s so soft y’all#thank you to everyone that’s been sending asks and messages about it#I love and appreciate the support you’re giving my silly little Christmas story I’m still writing in FEBRUARY

Tamales and Christmas Lights
12/21/2020
Pairing: Steve x Mexican American Reader Word Count: 6,838
Warnings: light smut, talks of having kids, language, drinking
A/N: This is the first time I have ever written anything for a specific type of reader. I don’t usually write for a specific race or ethnicity because I can’t speak as to the intimacy of living in that person’s shoes. By this I mean more of a family life. I’m eager to learn but for now, I will write what I know and that is a reader of my own background. I hope I don’t alienate anyone too much and that you all enjoy the story for what it is. There is a bit of Spanish in this one, but so long as you read all of the dialogue what is said is explained in English shortly after. Anyway, I’m SUPER nervous about this one, and it’s a little on the short side but I hope you all enjoy it. Thanks for your support! xoxo
“What do you do for the Holidays?”
Steve stiffens for a moment beneath you, bringing your gaze up to his sleepy face.
It’s so late and he’d only just got in an hour ago. Probably on the verge of sleep when you’d asked your quests.
“What?” There’s stress in his eyes and you’re sorry to interrupt the peace of the moment.
“Nothing. It’s nothing.” He rubs your shoulder, large hands trying to coax you back down onto his chest where you’d been laying with your head cradled underneath his chin.
“You’re lying. And you haven’t answered my question.”
Steve sighs and shakes his head, “Nothing. That’s what I do for the Holidays. I don’t do anything. I should probably change that since Buck is finally back. But I think I overheard Sam making plans to drag him to some party and I’m not up for that.”
“Oh…” You deflate, laying your head back on his chest but he notices the disappointment in your voice and he pushes you up again.
When you don’t move, he forces himself up, pulling back until he can rest against the headboard of your bed. You’re also made to sit up but Steve leans forward to guide you close to his body so that you’re practically straddling him.
“What did you have in mind? That wasn’t an empty oh.” He notices.
You shake your head, suddenly terrified to bring it up.
“Come on, baby, don’t leave me wondering. I’ll assume the worst.” He reminds you.
You smile, appreciating the way he reaches up to grab your chin and give your head a little shake. You probably shouldn’t like it but you love the way he makes these small gestures of possessiveness over you.
There’s something feral within you that purrs into submission when he claims you so openly. You’re his. Heart and soul. He knows it already even though it’s only been a few months of being together.
You fist his white shirt, wrinkling it as you pull him closer and kiss him sweetly despite the aggression in your hands.
There’s just something about him that makes you want to just squeeze him! Like that feeling you get when you see a tiny puppy or kitty and you just wanna hug it and squeeze it and love it to death.
He huffs a small laugh at your reaction, though he doesn’t understand it.
“What was that for?”
You lick your lips, kissing him once more before leaning back and releasing his poor shirt.
“You know you’re mine, right?” You ask him, eyes fixed on his pretty face.
You’re not a fan of the bruising around his left cheekbone, but the rest of him is just as perfect as ever.
“And you’re mine,” he assures you. “And if anyone tries to take you away…”
The implications are tantalizing but you don’t linger there. You laugh and shake your head, turning to the windows of his room to watch the heavy snowfall.
It’s freezing outside. It makes you shiver and you pull yourself closer to Steve, wrapping your arms around him by hooking them underneath his own. You ball yourself up in his lap as best you can and rest your head against his chest again as his own arms come back around you, large hands splayed out on your back as he rubs it to give you warmth and comfort.
“Why did you ask me about the holidays, babe?” he presses.
“I want to take you home with me,” that’s the truth. “My grandma has been asking me when I’m going to get married and maybe if they see I have a big strong boyfriend she and the rest of my aunts will leave me alone.”
Steve huffs another laugh, “Are they seriously asking you when you’re getting married?”
“Yeah,” with a nod, you push up again despite being completely at peace in Steve’s arms. “They’ve been asking since I graduated high school.”
“That’s odd,” he observes and you can see how it might be to others. “It’s always been like that in my family. My grandma got married when she was seventeen. Same for my mom. Had kids pretty quickly too. So, they’re kinda waiting for me to do the same. Because getting married and having kids is what I’m supposed to do.”
“Do you want to get married and have kids?” Steve’s hands stroke your hips, a small movement of passive affection.
He’s eager to give you all the touch you want in private but you know to keep things a little more tame in front of others. Steve isn’t big into the P.D.A.
“Eventually I guess. I don’t know. It’s not a question I feel like I need to answer right now. I’m a little more sure about the marriage than the kids but I’ve got lots of time to think about it.” you shrug.
“Yeah, we’ve got lots of time,” he asserts and your heart shoots into your throat, stomach twisting with fluttering wings that make it feel like you’re doing somersaults.
“We?” you smile, despite yourself.
“I wanna marry you eventually, I thought you knew that?”
“No,” you laugh.
“Oh, well now you know.”
“You can’t just spring that on me, Steve!”
He laughs now, hooking his hands behind your knees and yanks you closer. You’re right on him, and as you settle, you feel a familiar stirring between your bodies as the exhaustion of the mission wears off and his eagerness to show you how much he missed you becomes obvious.
“I think I just did,” he teases. “If you want to take me to meet your family, I am more than happy to come along. We have been together almost a year, it’s about time I think.”
“A year?” you gasp, realizing that it hasn’t been a few months after all.
Time with Steve is so much like a dream that it feels like it’s passed in the blink of an eye.
“Yeah, we hooked up in that closet off the shooting range on New Year’s Eve, remember?”
“Okay, first of all, hooked up? You’re spending too much time with Sam and Bucky.”
Your face heats up, neck burning and ears probably hot to the touch as the memory of you half drunk finding Steve alone in that shooting range.
You’d confessed recklessly and Steve had practically tackled you into the wall when he’d realized you were serious, despite being tipsy.
The frenzy that had followed that first kiss had been uncontrollable and he’d maneuvered you both into the bathroom and then pounded into you with you pinned between him and the counter.
You can still remember the shock of cold smooth concrete under your naked butt.
The next day, Steve had sought you out to tell you that he liked you too and that he wanted to take you out properly and that he was sorry for letting himself get out of hand the night before.
You responded by accepting his invitation but then luring him into your bedroom to ride him until he was breathless and groaning with satisfaction and you were twitching from reaching a third climax.
Your love with Steve has always been rooted in a very physical connection but over time, the emotional depth has increased exponentially and you’re best friends now, as well as lovers.
Now he’s here, remind you of that very beginning and telling you that it’s time to meet your family?
“You don’t have to go, Steve. My grandma will probably ask you a million questions and the rest of my family will be just as nosy and loud. We can get kind of rowdy when we get all together.”
The last thing you want to do is chas him off with an overbearing family, but at the same time...you love them! If he’s going to be in your life, he needs to accept them too, right?
What if he can’t? What will that mean for the two of you?
“Growing up it was just me and my mom,” Steve explains, stroking the length of your arms. “A big family is just what I need, I think.”
You watch him as he leans forward, his lips finding that stupid spot on your neck that always makes you melt.
As his tongue darts out, tracing a small circle, you absolutely collapse against him, arms wrapping up around his shoulders loosely, eyes very slightly rolling into the back of your head.
“Are you sure?”
“So sure,” he whispers, the heat of his breath raising goosebumps on your skin.
He pulls you down against his stiffened cock and you moan as he throws you back onto the bed.
~~~~~~~~~~
“Stop, you’re going to hurt yourself,” Steve urges, reaching over to place his hand in yours so that you can stop pulling and tugging at your own fingers.
“I’m nervous,” you admit, staring at the peach colored house with bright red trimming around every window and the bright red doorway. It’s absolutely covered in lights, twinkling in different colors. Traditional tiny lights but then around the tree in the front yard are huge bulbs, green, blue, yellow, and red.
They’re novelty lights? You’re not sure if that’s what they are, but you find them silly. Your grandpa’s idea probably.
Your grandmother’s house hasn’t changed one bit since you were little. The only thing that changes are the cars parked along the street, the large rose bushes along the front porch are bare.
Several green hard plastic chairs line the front wall angled oddly as someone had most likely been sitting there last night. Aunts and uncles, your mom and dad probably talking late into the night.
Even sitting in the car, with the engine idling, doors shut tight, you can already hear one of your aunts laughing her head off inside the house. The shouts of kids playing also reach your very normal ears. Steve must be able to hear everything.
“Do you think they won’t like me?” Steve worries, and now it’s your turn to turn and soothe his nerves.
“Oh, no, Steve. That’s not why. I know they’ll love you. I’m just afraid of what they’ll say. Or that they’ll smother you. I haven’t exactly told anyone in my family that I’m dating anyone much less…”
The two of you never talk about his official title. Who he is. Even though he’s retired in many ways, he’s still the first. Sam might be Captain America now, but everyone knows Steve as the original Captain America. There isn’t a person on this planet that doesn’t know who he is.
Normally, it doesn’t matter. To you, he’s just Steve Rogers. Super soldier, for sure, but just a man that swept you off your feet with his sweetness and kindness and okay, those damn shoulders and his ass is biteable. But he’s just Steve!
Your family will see the title first, you’re sure of it. They’ll see Captain America.
“Are they not big Captain America fans?” his teasing is gentle and innocent.
“Steve!” you shut your eyes and chuckle, “ I’m seriously so worried.”
“I can take it, hon. I’m a big boy. Come on, let’s get in there. I wanna meet your grandma.”
Suddenly he throws his door open and steps out of the car, shutting it off as he goes.
“Wait!” you gasp, scurrying to get out with him.
You scamper around the car until you’re beside him and take hold of his hand. He pulls you towards the door confidently but you let go of his hand and rush forward before he can reach it.
Fixing your hair, you push the door open and are immediately assaulted by the smell of spicy menudo. It makes your mouth water. The smell of spices and pine sol. Fabuloso is mixed in there too, your mom’s idea to mix the two cleansers together and use them to make a unique smelling concoction that gets the linoleum floors cleaner than if you used one or the other.
The low sofas are covered in shining clear plastic, no doubt put in place by your grandma just before all the family began to arrive. The flat screen is decorated with a simple green garland, beside the TV console is a low table where the remote sits on a lace doily, underneath in a wooden pocket are several magazines and underneath the pocket on the base of the table sits a blue round tin of butter cookies that no doubt has all of your grandma’s sewing things instead of the treats it promises.
The house isn’t big. In fact, it’s on the small side. The large master bedroom is situated at the back of the house along with the bathroom, past the kitchen where you can see the light on all of your aunts sitting around the table exchanging their respective chisme and keeping their hands busy with something you can’t see.
From the hallway to your right where the only two guest rooms are located along with a second half bath come running two of your younger cousins. They’re children still, your youngest Tia’s kids.
They don’t even notice you as you stop walking, choosing to run instead towards the back door in the distance past the kitchen, master bedroom, and bathroom.
One of your other aunts, the second oldest, turns her head as they run behind her.
“Que chingaos les dije?! Stop running in and out or I’m gonna kick your asses!” She yells at them, but the kids ignore her and disappear through the door. It slams shut behind them.
“Lulu, no les puedes decir algo?! They keep running in and out of here like wild animals.” Your second eldest aunt demands.
“They’re just playing, leave them alone.” Your Tia Lulu waves her sister off.
To your right you finally notice the centerpiece of the living room, a huge christmas tree with red, blue, and green glass ornaments. The lights are white, twinkling in different patterns, tinsel covering every branch to an obscene amount. At the top sits an old porcelain angel that your grandmother had once told you she’d received from her own grandmother and had actually been made in Mexico by some nun at an old church that had been knocked down a long time ago to make room for a cattle ranch.
The base of the tree is almost completely obscured by the dozens and dozens of presents from very large to very small. Each one is addressed to one or other member of the family. The kids especially all get gifts from each of your uncles and aunts.
You take another step towards the kitchen only to be stopped again as the restroom in the hallway to your right flushes and from inside it emerges your grandfather, buckling his belt as he lumbers out.
“Grandpa,” you call to him excitedly and he whips his head up then beams at the sight of you.
“Mijita bonita, cuando llegaste? Aye, chula…” His words fade out as he reaches you with his arms outstretched and pulls you into a quick tight hug.
His large hands pat you on the back several times before he kisses your cheek. He brings his hands to your shoulders and pushes you back a little to get a look at you.
“When did you get here?” he repeats, and gives your arms a squeeze.
“Just now,” you begin, but as you’d hugged your grandpa had turned you around and Steve moves in behind him.
He meets your eyes, shrinking a little, drawing his shoulders in to make himself smaller in the very normal person sized house.
“Grandpa, uh, I have um...this is my boyfriend, Steve,” with one arm extended you gesture towards the super soldier standing by the door.
“Steve?! ¿Trajiste un gringo?”
Your grandpa whips around, searching at average height level for the white boy you’ve brought and finds himself face to face with Steve’s chest.
He adjusts quickly, finding Steve’s face and with a gasp, he slams his hand over his heart and laughs.
“That’s Captain America!” he laughs.
The declaration brings the kitchen to a pause and like dominoes all of your aunts rise one by one, moving into the doorway of the kitchen to catch a glimpse at the commotion in the living room.
More gasps follow and soon you can’t hear yourself think as they all break into a cacophony of excited chatter.
Your Tia Lulu is the first to shove her way through, as she’s the youngest, she smiles at Steve flirtatiously before shoving your grandpa out of the way.
“Move aside, dad! Hello, hi. I’m Consuela but everyone calls me Lulu. You can call me sweetheart.” She throws out her tongue as she laughs, a clear joke but Steve good naturedly takes her hand and shakes it, a shy but kind smile on his handsome face.
“Oh my God, Tia, stop,” you plead.
“I’m just kidding, werca fregada. Don’t get your panties all in a twist.” She swats at you while your grandpa retreats to the sofa where he must have been sitting before, stuffing fives, tens, and twenties into envelopes for the kids.
Grandma and Grandpa never get anyone anything. They just put money in envelopes for the kids.
As your aunts file in, all five of them, you wait until Steve looks at you to bite your bottom lip and mouth a quick apology.
He shakes his head, setting your heart at ease as your aunts circle around him talking fast and occasionally asking him a question or two which he answers readily.
“A year.”
“I’m not sure.”
“Well, I’m not Captain America anymore.”
“Consulting mostly.”
“Yeah, I-I have my own place.”
“It’s a rental.”
Your aunts gasp at that in particular, “Ooh, it’s a rental. Those can be so expensive. Did you get the insurance?”
“Uh, well, no. I didn’t mean, it’s actually one of Tony’s-Stark. He had it set aside for us when he found out we were coming to visit.”
The madness reignites at the mention of Iron Man and as they plunge into more questions, your turn just in time as your mom makes her way over to you.
“Why didn’t you call me?” she wraps you up in her arms and you hug her back, holding it for a little longer than you normally would but you’ve been so stressed with bringing Steve here that you feel a relief wash over you not only because she’s there to help you, but to finally have it happening means you can stop the anticipation.
“I’m sorry, mom. I decided to get him down here super last minute and I kinda wanted it to be a surprise. Where’s dad?”
“He’s out back with your tios. Drinking already,” she shakes her head but there’s no surprise there from anyone. “They’ve got the pit going. Chicken and fajitas to go with the menudo.”
“It smells so freaking good,” you laugh.
“Is he really your boyfriend? How long has this been going on? How come you haven’t told me?”
The hurt in your mom’s voice is subtle but you hear it and lament it.
“I was going to tell you. Every time I called. But at first it was too new and then after that I just didn’t know how to explain it to you. I know you hate my job. Now I’m dating a former Avenger?”
It’s her turn to look apologetic.
“Mija, you could have told me. I do hate that you put yourself in harm’s way, but that’s your job. No mom is going to like that.”
She takes a moment to glance at Steve, then with a flick of her eyebrows and a quick nod in his direction, she scoots closer, “Isn’t he like super old?”
You laugh and nod.
“He’s older than grandpa,” She laughs with you as you whisper, Steve giving you two a quick glance.
“He doesn’t look it,” your mom admits.
A tiny upturn to the corner of his lip tells you he can hear everything you’re saying.
“Is it serious?” She asks, letting you steer her towards the kitchen as her probing continues.
Inside the kitchen you find the entire kitchen table cleared of the usual place mats and ceramic Jesus centerpiece to make room for the bowls of masa, cooked seasoned pork and chicken for the filling of what will be tomorrow’s tamales.
At the stove you see your grandma a well worn lime green apron tied tightly around her waist and neck, huddled over the very tall and large pot, stirring and adding seasoning to the murky russet soup inside.
“I hope that has lots of posole!”
Your grandma turns at your voice and her face lights up.
“Mijita, chula!” she gushes, rushing forward to wrap her arms around you and kiss your cheek with a loud smack.
“Hi, grandma, I missed you so much,” you realize, hugging her tight.
“Por qué no nos dijiste que ibas a venir? Werca, cabrona!” she smacks you hard and you laugh, holding her hands as she pulls back to look at you. “You need to eat more.”
“Grandma, I’m eating fine,” you laugh, amused by the direction her thoughts go.
“She brought a boy home, mom,” your mom gives you away, then sticks her tongue out at you as she replaces her mother’s place at the pot.
“Mom!”
“You brought a boy?” she’s ecstatic! “A boyfriend?”
“Yes, he’s a boyfriend.”
“What’s his name?” she starts wiping her hands on her apron, cleaning them up to meet Steve.
“His name is Steve.”
“Es un gringo?!” her exclamation of surprise is just like grandpa’s.
“Yes, he’s white, does it matter?”
“Pos, no. It doesn’t matter, as long as he’s nice to you. Is he good to you?”
“He’s the best, grandma. He insists on taking me out every Friday to eat and watch a movie.”
Well, every Friday that you or he aren’t on mission. And it’s such a small thing but you know it’ll make her happy to know that he takes you out.
“Ooh, that’s good,” she approves. “Does he have a good job?”
“He’s a consultant where I work.”
“With the Avengers?” she gasps.
“Yeah.”
“A consultant? What does that mean? Is he a nerd?”
You laugh, throwing your head back, “He’s the biggest nerd, though he’ll never admit it.”
“Well, andale, let’s go meet your boyfriend,” she pushes you towards the doorway and you make to lead the way. “Is it serious?”
She whispers the second question, though you know that Steve will be able to hear.
Is it serious? “I uh…”
“Ayt! Don’t you all have husbands?”
Saving Steve from your aunts, your grandma moves forward and pushes and pulls and slaps them away from him, shoving them back towards the kitchen.
“Esos tamales no se van hacer solos.”
“Ow, mom! Stop hitting us,” your eldest aunt Margarita frowns.
“Magge, no te da verguenza?”
“Why should I be embarrassed?! Have you seen her boyfriend? Steve, do you like older women?” your Tia throws back at him as your other aunts push past you, patting you in the back and whispering congratulations at your luck.
“Technically I’m older,” he calls and everyone looks at him, not talking, apparently in shock at the fact that he truly is over a hundred years old.
“Oh my God, your boyfriend is Captain America?!” your grandma realizes, turning to slap your shoulder lightly for not explaining yourself.
Everyone bursts into laughter, the chatter moving into the kitchen as you join the laughter, Steve smiling from ear to ear as your mom rushes back out, eager to meet him.
Grandma pulls him into a hug and he gently returns it, smiling politely as she gushes over how handsome he is and how tall and then getting angry at you for not feeding him before admiring the exquisite shape of his body.
“Your grandpa had a body like this when he was young, mija,” grandma assures you. “I don’t know what happened.”
“Probably all the tamales,” you tease and she smacks you gently again before laughing in genuine amusement.
~~~~~~~~~~
You can’t find Steve anywhere. The kids are all inside, watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in the living room, crowded around the flat screen with expressions that range from amusement to boredom.
Mostly it’s the older kids that are tired of the claymation film. They’ve seen it every year since they were old enough to sit up.
“Should I change it?” you wander in from the front, your Tias laughing as the door shuts behind you cutting the sound off.
One of the things you’d missed was the happiness that filled the house this time of year. Even though they fight like cats, it’s cats that are sisters and love each other deep down.
They always end up laughing again eventually.
Your cousin Claudia sits up at your offer, “Yes! Put something else on!”
“No!” the littler ones revolt.
“Even if it’s Elf?”
You stop by the TV, remote already in hand and all of their eyes light right up.
“Okay, okay, put Elf!”
Their accents make you smile. Like you, they’d probably grown up speaking mostly spanish as a toddler and then as you’d started school, English had begun to push in as your default leaving you with a heavy accent for a few years.
Now it’s almost completely gone and only emerges when you shout angrily, or so Steve says.
As the opening narration begins, you catch Claudia’s eyes and give her the remote, “Have you seen Steve?”
“Captain America?” she smirks, getting a serious kick out of your choice of boyfriend.
But you’d also seen her all flustered when she’d met him. She thinks he’s hot and honestly, he is so you can’t blame her. At sixteen, she’s lost almost all of her bashfulness.
“Yes, Steve. Have you seen him?”
“He went out back with Tio, I think.”
“My dad?!” you gasp, already terrified of what they might be talking about.
“Yeah, he looked nervous. You should probably go save him from Tio’s interrogation.”
“Yeah, thanks,” you throw at her, already moving towards the back door in a hurry.
The inside of the house is toasty warm, especially with the tamales cooking and the menudo on low heat to keep it warm in case anyone wants thirds or fourths.
“Where are you going?” your mom asks as you pass by.
She’s sitting at the kitchen table, across from your grandma talking in hushed tones.
“To get Steve, Claudia said he was with dad.”
“Well, leave them alone, I’m sure he’s being nice.”
Your grandma laughs and you shove the door open and disappear back out into the chilly winter night.
Wrapping your arms around yourself to combat the chill that begins to set in, you scan the backyard and move past your tios sitting around the clearly diy firepit one of them had built for your grandparents, each one knocking back a beer in either bottle or can.
They’re not as loud as your tias but they’re still talking loudly, laughing and then arguing over the superbowl.
“No manches, guey. That linebacker doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing. He should have stayed in Atlanta.”
You tune them out as you spot Steve and your dad standing by the table of barbecue a little further out by the back corner of the chain link fence.
Steve is standing with one hand on the tongs, flipping over some of the leftover chicken your grandma asked your dad to cook since someone will eat it eventually.
They’re talking, both in deep conversation until Steve smiles and seems to relax. Your dad, who stands at five feet, nine inches in height, has to reach up to clap Steve on the shoulder then smiles too, both of them turning their focus on the chicken.
“What the fuck?” you mutter, moving towards them with purposeful steps.
Both of them look up as you approach and immediately Steve hands your dad the tongs before moving towards you and peeling off his black leather jacket.
“Hon, why are you out here without a coat? It’s cold.” he says sweetly.
He can’t feel the temperature like you can but he can tell when you’re cold.
“Dad? What are you two doing out here?”
You’re so suspicious of your dad, worried he might be saying things to hurt Steve, but both of them look happy even.
“I’m showing him how we make the chicken,” your dad says innocently.
“Uh huh...sure you are.”
“He was,” Steve promises.
“I don’t trust you,” you say sternly, using one finger to point up into Steve’s ridiculously handsome face. “You’re just trying to suck up to my family.”
“Me?” he gasps, forced innocence on his face now too.
You narrow your eyes at both of them in turn, wrapping your arms around yourself again as Steve rubs them to try and warm you up.
“Come on, let’s go back inside,” Steve urges you, then turns to look at your dad. “Thanks for the lesson, Hector, I’ll keep it in mind for the future.”
“What lesson?”
“Never you mind, nosy. Come on, before you catch a cold.”
Steve sits you on the sofa once he’s got you inside and settles in pulling you against his side then kissing your temple before turning his focus on Buddy the Elf sitting in a bathroom singing with Zoey Deschanel as she showers.
“When did you sneak off to talk to my dad?”
Eyes narrowed, you watch him for any of his usual tells that he might be lying or hiding something from you.
So far, nothing.
“I didn’t sneak off. You were busy talking to your aunt and your dad invited to show me how to make the chicken. He was nice, serious about you. He wanted me to know that he’s got his eyes on me and if I hurt you all of your uncles will come find me and castrate me.”
He smiles wide, amused by this for some reason.
“It’s been a while since I’ve felt fear like that. Your dad really meant it.”
You’re not convinced but he reaches down to take hold of your chin and force you to look at him.
“Give me a kiss, pouty.” he requests.
How can you resist? You lean up and give him a quick kiss but then the kids say, “Ooooooh.”
You turn to them and throw Claudia a pillow but she laughs and catches it, leading the rest of them into giggles.
~~~~~~~~~~
The night grows older and everyone comes inside. As midnight approaches, the kids filter into their usual seats at the feet of their respective parents. Your six aunts and their husbands pile onto the sofas or linger in doorways, all attention diverted to the Christmas tree and the piles of presents underneath.
Your grandma and grandpa get center seating on the longest sofa, both of them ready with cash envelopes in hand for giving out as soon as the time comes.
Your dad on the other hand sits himself by the tree and while all of the adults talk amongst themselves, the kids are as quiet as they will ever be, little to teen eyes all trained on the pile of gifts.
“Mija, ven siéntate aqui. Magge, dale el asiento a tu sobrina,” your grandmother calls, waving you over to sit beside her.
Your aunt looks from your grandmother to you and then back, looking almost affronted by the request until your grandma gives her a face of deep annoyance.
Your aunt has a moment of realization, then sighs but begins to get up.
“No! Tia, it’s okay. I’ll stand. I’m alright here.”
“Don’t argue with me and get your butt over here,” your grandmother interrupts.
“She never sees you,” your tia reminds you. “Come sit here, I’ll sit on your tio’s lap.”
“Like hell you will, you wanna break my legs?”
“Callate lo sico, estupido imbecil,” she smacks him in the arm but then sits in his lap and he smirks as he wraps his arms around her waist.
Steve pushes you towards her, then leans down to kiss your cheek.
He knows you hate to leave him standing there.
“Go, sit with your grandma.”
“You sure?”
“Yes, of course babe. Go.” He kisses your cheek again then pushes you towards the sofa.
As you settle in, giving him another look of consideration, your grandma takes your hand and holds it gently plucking a smile from your worried expression.
“He’s okay, no one is going to take him from you.”
Not that you think anyone would, but it’s a common phrase among couples who are glued at the hip.
As your grandma’s old cuckoo clock chimes in midnight, your dad points at your cousin Claudia who gets up and quickly shuts off the living room light leaving all of you in the glow of the white twinkle lights.
As your dad begins to call out names, the kids scoot closer in excitement and watch as they’re each handed gifts after gifts.
Eventually the floor begins to fill with crumpled up wrapping paper and colorful bows and ribbon. Toys are yanked from boxes and the laughter begins to fill the room again.
Your aunts and uncles also get their names called and you don’t feel bad that your name is never called.
They had no idea you were coming and your Tia Magge leans towards you, “I’m sorry we didn’t get you anything, Mija. We didn’t know you were coming.”
“Oh, I know, Tia. It’s okay. I just wanted to see you all and bring Steve to meet you.”
As you gesture towards where you left him standing, you find him missing but think nothing of it as he might have just gone to the bathroom.
There are only two gifts left under the tree, one very large one which your dad calls out for your grandpa, and then he pulls a shoe sized box, wrapped in silver paper onto his lap but gestures at your grandma who lets go of your hand and begins to call names out and pass the envelopes with money to the kids.
Because you can’t stand sitting there any longer, the mess on the floor still growing, you get up and move into the kitchen.
Trash bag in hand you move back out to the living room and begin to stoop over and pick up the wrappings of all the presents exchanged tonight.
Your grandma calls out Claudia’s name and as the teen sits back down, your dad clears his throat.
“We have one more gift, and it’s for my beautiful daughter,” he says, shocking you into standing as he calls your name.
“Me?!” you gasp, completely in shock.
You hadn’t been expecting anything though you and Steve had definitely brought gifts for everyone.
Your gift had been the ability to see such bright smiles as they opened said presents.
“Here,” your dad holds it out and you let go of the trash bag as Claudia takes it from you.
With a quick wipe of your brow, you take the gift and look for a name so that you’ll know who to thank, but there’s no name.
“Open it!” One of the younger kids says with excitement.
“Yeah, rip it!” another urges.
“Rip it?” you chuckle, and rip it.
It is indeed a shoebox, but as you lift the lid and place it underneath, you find in the shoebox another box, slightly smaller, also sealed up tight this time in pink shiny wrapping paper..
“Oh my God,” you laugh, shaking your head in disbelief.
You open that box too, tossing the wrapping paper to Claudia who tosses it for you as you find yourself staring at yet another box, wrapped in green snowflake paper.
“What the hell is going on here?” you laugh again, tearing it open and finding a smaller one.
This goes on and your family laughs at you as you open box after box after box, until finally the smallest box is the size of laptop charging block.
“How the hell does anyone even find a box this small?!” you gasp, shaking your head as your shoulders shake with laughter.
You tear the last box open, discarding the bright red paper then open the top to find a small black velvet bag with a drawstring pulled shut.
“Finally!”
Your exclamation brings laughter from the room and as you pull the bag open, you turn it over since the room is in semi-darkness and you can’t see in.
Onto your palm tumbles a silver ring. Sitting on top is an emerald cut diamond, solitaire, that glimmers in the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree.
“What the-?” you start, but from the hallway behind your mom emerges Steve, looking nervous as fuck.
He swallows hard as he walks towards you, stopping only when he’s right in front of you then slowly, as butterflies tumble violently in your lower belly, he kneels.
“Oh my God…” you whisper, too shocked to speak any louder.
He says your name, clears his throat because his voice shakes, and you smile, on the verge of laughing or crying. You’re not sure which.
“In just about a week we’ll have been together for exactly one year, but I’ve known since you pulled that bullet out of my a-my backside and called me a big baby for whining about it that you were the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
“Both of us work in a very dangerous job but I don’t think I know anyone else who is as brave or strong or sure of themselves as you. I wasn’t sure what to expect from life after I gave up being Captain America.
“Suddenly there were an infinite amount of possibilities ahead of me and yet, not once did I think that marrying anyone would be the path I’d take. I’d given up on love, on the chance of a normal life, but you’ve woken me up. You’ve pulled me out of my past and with you I can see that future we talked about the other morning.
“I see my life as your husband and father to our kids laid out in front of us and I can’t wait to get started. So, I guess, I just need to ask?”
Your family laughs, reminding you that you two are not alone.
“You’ve always said that if someone proposed to you, you wouldn’t want it to be in public and well, these people are your family so they’re not public. They represent a life I would very much like to be a part of. I’ve had no one for so long, I want this family, so will you marry me? Will you let me be a part of your family?”
You’re in shambles. You’re sobbing, smiling through the waterworks as your heart pounds so hard in your chest and all of the oxygen threatens to leave your brain.
“Yes!” you gasp, and the room explodes with cheers and applause.
Steve takes the ring and quickly slips it onto your finger before rising and pulling you flush against his body. He kisses you eagerly, laughing against your own lips as you kiss him back just as passionately.
As he pulls back, an audible smack snuffed out by the roar of excitement in the room, you search his eyes for any form of doubt.
There’s none.
“Is this what you were talking to daddy about? Asking me to marry you?”
“It was the right thing to do,” Steve explains, and you feel vindicated in your earlier suspicions.
“Jerk!” you smack his chest but he pulls you in for another kiss.
The two of you share in the moment for only one more second before your grandmother is pulling you two apart so that she can hug you and kiss Steve’s cheek. Your mom is also in tears, hugging you tight as your dad hugs you both, then shakes Steve’s hand before pulling him in for a quick hug.
There’s a terrifying POP that sends you and Steve ducking from instinct, but you find your grandpa holding up a bottle of champagne.
“¿Dónde está la música? Turn on the radio! Let’s celebrate!” He shouts, lifting the bottle to his lips.
As the kids spring up and split up throughout the household to play with their toys, your aunts and uncles begin to pair off, swaying and singing at the very top of their lungs as Feliz Navidad fills the room.
Steve makes his way back towards you, swerving past your excited family until he has his arms around you again, pulling you in close until he can sway you to the beat of the music.
“I’m guessing the party is just getting started?”
“Oh, babe, you just gave them the fuel to go until the sun comes up.”
Steve chuckles leans down to kiss you again, summoning an encore of cheers.
The Wrapping
In my last story, I wanted to write a dark thriller-ish story with a villainous protagonist, but I wanted this story to be a whole lot more wholesome (though still devious) for the holidays! It’s kind of silly and not as hot tbh, but hopefully it’s kind of fun for someone. It’s been one hell of a year, so here’s to a better 2021. Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays y’all! Stay safe, and make sure no one you’re close to is plotting to suitify you! ;)
edit: Oh crap, I totally forgot to post this yesterday! Here it is though, my message stays the same!
-----------------------------------------------------
I sighed as I listened to the mundane tapping of fingers on keyboards, nails hitting the desk, pens clicking. Over and over, my head rang with the same sounds throughout the morning. No one who was here wanted to be here. Except perhaps my boss. That piece of shit put us all to work instead of giving us the holidays off. Only reason he might be happy to be here is probably because, if his wife has been hearing any of the rumors regarding his interactions with the female employees of our company, I’m assuming their marriage is disastrous.
I thought I’d be able to relax at home, spend Christmas with my boyfriend, Craig. We’ve been together for a couple of years now, and this was our first year living together. Our first Christmas spent together. The last one, we had both flown home to see our parents, splitting up.
But of course, my piece of shit boss had called me up. Told me to come in and work...subtly threatened unemployment if I objected. I wanted to quit right then and there, but money was tight and I knew how much Craig and I could use the cash. I had to break the news to Craig, but he was understanding. He promised that we’d open up presents tonight, or we’d open them up tomorrow if I was too tired. It was heartwarming to hear the support loved one, but made the act of going to work the next day no less grueling.
“Hey Lance, you get that call from boss too?” I jumped at the sound of my name being called and turned to see my coworker and one of the few friends I’ve made in the office, Trevor. He was a good lookin’ guy, though he only had a frustrated face at the moment.
“Yeah. Fucking ridiculous.”
“Right? Sick of this fucking job. Frankly, I’m not even sure what I fucking do at this point,” he joked. A hint of a smile popped up on his face. He slapped me on the arm and got up, heading towards the bathroom. I closed my eyes and imagined what I’ll do with Craig. It was the only thing that could motivate me to keep up with my work.
----------------------------
Hours later, the sun was setting and an orange hue painted the sky. It was a surprisingly beautiful sunset, considering it was Christmas. I finally finished my work. I watched the tired people around me cleaning up their desks, disgruntled and ready to go home. I glanced over at Trevor’s desk and noted he was still missing...weird. I hadn’t seen him the entire day ever since he left to go to the restroom. I guessed he had wisened up and just left. I sure as hell wish I could afford to...I know Trevor came from a pretty wealthy background. But at least I could finally find some respite with the end of the day approaching.
Until I saw the secretary walking to my desk.
She placed her hands on my desk and looked me in the eye, almost remorsefully.
“Mr. Campbell would like to speak to you.”
My heart sunk as I realized I’ll be spending more time in this shithole instead of celebrating the holidays with my boyfriend. I slumped in my chair and nodded to the secretary. She left me and I cleaned my act up. Surely it must be something quick, right? I couldn’t imagine him calling me in at the end like this for any reason.
Walking over to Mr. Campbell’s office, I opened the door and saw my dapper boss staring at me intimidatingly.
“Hello, Lance. I’m sure this little meeting may come as a surprise. Take a seat, won’t you?” He motioned towards a chair opposite from his desk, while seating himself in a larger one.
“I know you might be a little confused as to why I called you in. But let me assure it’s nothing bad.” He smiled at me, something I had never seen before on his face. He always looked menacing and unwelcoming. But right in this moment, something seemed different.
“I just wanted to give you this for being an outstanding part of this office. You’ve always been productive and loyal to this business. You deserve proper compensation. Especially for coming in on Christmas.”
From behind his desk, he pulled out a fairly large box, wrapped in a snowman-covered paper, perhaps the size of my torso, and slid it across the desk. I cautiously took the box, wondering what the catch was. There was no way he decided to just randomly give me this out of kindness or gratefulness. Not Mr. Campbell. This is the abusive boss who makes people work on Christmas, threaten their jobs and their records, and, allegedly, numerous women have quit and spoken up on him firing them if they did not oblige to sexual favors. On top of that, why the hell is he only giving this to me? Still, he was my boss for now, and I had to appeal to him.
“...Er, thanks, Mr. Campbell. I appreciate the gift. I’ll make sure-”
“Why don’t you open it?”
“Right here? Right now?”
“Yes. Open it. I want you to see it.”
Confused, I still obeyed and started to rip the wrapping paper off. I glanced up to give the boss an acknowledging smile as I lifted the lid up. I found a folded up suit and tie, along with pants.
“Clothing, Mr. Campbell?” I tried to feign gratitude with a hesitant smile.
“Keep going.”
I lifted the clothing and saw an ID on top of a peach colored object. On the ID, I saw a picture of...Trevor. A chill ran across my spine as I felt the peace colored object...it felt like skin. I pulled it out and lo and behold...it was Trevor in the form of a flimsy suit.
“Is this some kind of...costume?” The thing gave me the creeps, but I couldn’t defy my curiosity.
“You could say that.”
“Was that...you earlier then?”
A grim glare shot across Mr. Campbell’s face. “No.”
“Then...what did you do to Trevor?” My voice quivered as a ton of horrific scenes ran through my head.
“It was just an injection. Don’t worry, he’ll be fine.” He pulled out what looked like pink stickers. “All you do is slap these magic tags on, and he’ll be restored within an hour. Sorry to alarm you.”
A sigh of relief escaped my mouth, until Mr. Campbell said, “Why don’t you put him on right now?”
“What? Right here? I don’t even know-”
“Take your clothes off. Stretch open the mouth. You can figure out the rest.”
Something told me I didn’t have a choice. I laid the suit on the floor and started to pull out of my clothing, tossing it over the chair. I grabbed the Trevor suit and dipped my toes into the mouth. Surprisingly, it was soft and comfortable. I slipped into the legs and did a few test jumps. Mr. Campbell observed closely as the suit matched my form. I squeezed my way into the rest of the suit before pulling the face over my own, before a painful ache rushed through my body. Suddenly, a lifetime of memories flooded my mind. I recalled feeling a prick in the neck before everything went black...I wasn’t exactly sure what to say to Mr. Campbell.
“Is there something you would like me to do with this?” Trevor’s voice escaped my throat! It was like I was him entirely. But why did Mr. Campbell want me in this suit? I was confused on what to do now. I stood there awkwardly, naked with an admittedly sexier body. Mr. Campbell walked around his desk and came up to me.
“Why don’t you unwrap your second present?” He grabbed my crotch, though I immediately relented and backed up.
“I’m sorry Mr. Campbell, but I’ve got a boyfriend, and frankly, this is a little weird...”
“Don’t you want to provide for him?” I gulped, knowing my job was on the line. Craig would understand, he always does.
I started to unbutton Mr. Campbell’s jacket and slid it off of him. The white button-up was already partially open, displaying the man’s hairy chest. Despite how awful my boss was, I confessed I considered him an attractive man. I pulled off the shirt and was down to his pants. I looked at him, unsure if he wanted me to go all the way. He nodded, urging me to take it all off. I unbuckled his belt and slid it out, the pants visibly loosened and slipped down with ease. I looked up for another nod of approval before removing his shoes and socks, smelling the subtle rankness of his feet. Finally, i slipped his underwear down, and a lengthy member dropped in front of me. I examined the man in front of me, up and down. Were these the kind of sexual favors my boss wanted? Was he interested in men?
“Why don’t you keep going?”
I raised an eyebrow at him, dumbfounded. “What?”
“Keep going.” He walked closer to me, sensually looking me in the eye.
I couldn’t quite grasp what he meant, until he tugged at his cheek, revealing something else inside. I rubbed Mr. Campbell’s face and he closed his eyes, groaning in pleasure. Slowly tracing down his face, I hooked my fingers under his lips and started to stretch the mouth open. I could feel the scruffy facial hair move under my fingers as I tugged at his face, the face distorting as a familiar face was revealed under Mr. Campbell’s face.
“Craig?” I was absolutely speechless as I slipped off the entire face of my boss. The upper half of the face landed in a heap behind him, while the chin lay across his chest. I backed up in shock at the spectacle before me!
Craig gave me a devious smile and started to rip the skin off of himself. Still using Mr. Campbell’s hands, he grabbed at the mouth around his neck and started to pull. As he did, the skin started to give, and he started to rip it off, like wrapping. Truly like a Christmas gift! The face split in half and he tugged towards his left arm. With a forceful motion, the arm sleeve ripped right off and he tossed it towards onto the desk, the fingers hanging over the side as they flopped around. He continued to rip the other side off as the suit seemingly got shredded. With the torso hanging over his hip, the torn up skinsuit hung onto the cock in pieces, the face hanging by the side while the right hand of the suit laying flatly on the ground. Craig heaved as he pulled the rest of it off violently, further shredding the skin until it lay as a mess on the floor. He picked up it and slung the mangled skinsuit onto the desk.
“Merry Christmas, babe!” He held me by my hips and kissed me.
“Craig, what the hell is this?”
“I bought us some of these serums, and figured they would make a nice gift. I didn’t originally plan to use it on these guys in specific, but when you got that call and told me about your shitty boss...I figured we could get a bit of revenge. Plus, you’ve told me about Trevor being hot. So I figured, why the hell not?”
“But what about Mr. Campbell? You ripped him up!”
“Don’t worry, trust me, some tape and those little sticker things he showed...he’ll be back. And he’ll be humbled.”
He went back behind the desk and pulled out a paper and slid it over to me. I skimmed through it...this was a document giving the company to me!
“Oh my God! What the fuck? This is...”
“Yep. I always said you’d make a great leader. And whenever your coworkers come by to hang out with us, you have no clue what they say about you. They’re gonna love you. And Mr. Campbell over here, signed the document. Hopefully, he takes the time off to reimagine himself as a better man. All you gotta do is sign it yourself.” He rolled a pen over and I held it within my hand. I scoured through Trevor’s thoughts, and he had said some of the sweetest things about me, and his conversations with our colleagues suggested that maybe I could be the one to make this shithole better. I brought the pen to the paper and voila, my signature was on it.
“You get to be the boss now, Lance.” Craig got up and came to embrace me. I was too stunned at everything happening to give him much of a response. “You can make this place so much better next year. But for now, why don’t we enjoy that sexy suit you’re in?” He started to kiss me, and I returned the favor. I pulled back for a second and looked Craig in the eyes.
“This is the best Christmas ever...Why don’t I give you my present now?” I gave him a suggestive look, rubbing up against against him. I pushed him down across the desk and whispered into his ear, “I love you, babe. Merry Christmas.”
Bewitching Hour
Summary: October has been a blissfully busy month. With Halloween around the corner, Arthur and Y/N have some planning to do.
Warnings: Swearing
Words: 4,665
A/N: Special thanks to @hhandley80 for this request! You've been so supportive and sweet. I truly appreciate you and hope you enjoy it!
On a side note, my oneshots will be more sporadic. I'm still writing but life has been life. Also, I've finished the first draft of another multi-chapter featuring Arthur and Y/N. It's going to take time to rewrite the subsequent drafts and edit, edit, edit. The chapters will go up once the story is ready. Thanks for your patience and support! 🙂 I heart you all!
If you have any thoughts or questions, please comment, feel free to message me, or send me an ask!
Arthur's suggestion that they make plans to celebrate Halloween should not have been a surprise. He loved starting traditions with Y/N, and she prized adopting them with him. "It's been awhile," he'd said as they'd walked arm-in-arm to the laundromat. "I think it'd be nice."
Holidays had been a source of merriment most of her life. The beauty of red and green decorations at Christmas. Turkey and mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving. An egg hunt and chocolate rabbit at Easter. The togetherness of family during them all.
Halloween, though, wasn't a favorite.
As a child, she'd had fun trick-or-treating, riding her bike from house to far-flung house. And she hadn't minded escorting her little sister as a teenager. Y/N's homemade witch costume had been passed down. She could still recall the sleekness of the ribbon between her fingers as she'd secured the pointed hat under Mabel's chin.
But the magic had fallen away. When married to Jeff, she'd had to attend his boss's annual party. After receiving an apologetic shrug and kiss, she'd be relegated to hanging out with the other wives. They'd included her in their recipe swaps, in their exchanges of mild gossip. Her natural friendliness made chit-chat easy, far easier than having a good time. Those evenings had been spent nursing a glass of wine and willing the clock to go faster.
During the period she'd cared for her father, she'd tried to hand out candy. She liked being a good neighbor and imparting kindness in the form of bite-sized sweets. As his health had declined, the porch light had gone dark. Random rings of the doorbell would result in shouting and swearing. Repeated attempts to explain the door's lock wasn't broken. Festivity would transform into drudgery. It hadn't been worth the trouble. Instead, she'd watched terrible TV specials while her thoughts wandered to a future far from Boonville. A future she'd doubted would ever be.
"I don't know if it's your thing," Arthur had continued, bringing her back to the present. "But you might enjoy it with me." The response he longed for was evident in the worrying of his pocket, outlines of his knuckles visible through the tan cloth.
Everything they'd experienced together had soothed the sting of those wasted years. The hesitancy lurking in her was silly. Unwelcome. Less than either of them deserved. She'd met his keen eyes and half-smile. The sudden mental image of him dressed as a cowboy or pirate, eyepatch and all, prompted a laugh. Convinced her as she dug out her dry-cleaning stub. "It isn't my thing," she'd said. "But you are."
Relief had relaxed his wrinkles, save for his crows feet, which had deepened as he'd returned her happy expression. A slender arm wrapped around her waist, drew her against his solid frame. Once the clerk disappeared through the swinging doors to retrieve their clothes, Arthur grasped her chin and kissed her. The tender explorations were soon sloppy, and she'd giggled, his enthusiasm becoming her own. Their noses had met, his lashes resting on his wide cheekbones. "I think you're the sweetest treat, Mrs. Fleck."
Currently, Donahue's Department Store, Gotham's number one retail emporium (if the ads were to be believed), was bustling with last-minute shoppers. Weary mothers escorted their babbling children through the aisles. Clerks swapped out displays for the changing blue light specials. Lines went for yards. Patricia and Y/N sought refuge at a corner table in the café on the top floor. The warm glow from the pendant lamps provided a relaxed ambience, one that matched the hot cider and pumpkin spice cake they were savoring.
"I've got my grandson on Sunday," Patricia said between bites. "My daughter's going to a party with a medical records tech from Gotham General. Met him when she missed the bus. They split a cab and hit it off." Chuckling, she lifted her mug. "Speaking of, how's married life been so far?"
Memories of the past week quickened Y/N's heart, until she thought it might stop. How Arthur had gripped her replacement Social Security card, just to read her new name. The way he'd grab her for a twirl whenever they were in the kitchen. The reverence in his gaze when they'd lay together after sex, a look that both thrilled and made her blush. "The bills for his medication and appointments will no longer make us cringe," she deadpanned. She lowered her fork. "When we met, I was kind of blindsided - I'm not the type to fall in love quickly." The corners of her lips tugged up. "Being married to Arthur feels like a habit. A habit I should have learned twenty years ago."
"I'm glad you found each other." Patricia reached across the light brown table and covered Y/N's hand, gave it a squeeze. Then she wiped frosting from her mouth and nodded in the direction of the escalator. "Now let's find a costume that'll drive him nuts."
Beyond the colorful cosmetics and pungent perfume counters, they sorted through racks of vinyl smocks and plastic masks. Pop culture icons and princesses. Vampires and spooks. Knockoffs of classic movie monsters. Most were poorly made and decidedly uninteresting. Y/N pawed through accessories in a nearby basket, a cigar here, a patched hat there. "How about a hobo? I could steal Arthur's tie."
"This was his idea. Give him something a little exciting." After a roll of Y/N's eyes, Patricia held out a plastic display bag. "Found it."
The white font on its blue label declared she should "Create a unique look!" A woman in a leopard-print leotard and bow-tie wore black cat ears and a tail, the only two items included in the set. Y/N's nose wrinkled. "I don't think so, Patricia." She rummaged through another bin and examined a hockey mask. "I don't show a lot of skin."
"You show Arthur." Patricia ignored Y/N's glare, continuing to shove it at her. "Every man loves a woman dressed as a cat. Our next lunch is on me if I'm wrong."
Patricia could be relentless, but Y/N had to admit she was usually right. She arched a brow as she eyed the costume. Maybe she could find a solid body suit instead of animal print. The kit was only $2.98. And her friend had made it a challenge. "You're on. But I'm not wearing a bow-tie." She crossed her arms across her chest and tapped her mouth. "Your turn. Would Robert like you as a French maid or a go-go dancer?"
~~~~~
It was a busy season for performers. Arthur remembered HaHa's talent agency being booked solid for October by the end of August. Myriad functions at nursing homes, parties, and children's organizations took place throughout the city. Amusement Mile had a series of special events, allowing Arthur to work extra hours before the slowness of winter dragged in. Once the holiday was over, he'd buy make-up and props on clearance.
He'd always assumed he would like Halloween - if he'd had the chance to celebrate it properly. It was about connection, something he'd never managed. The customs gave him a pretense, a template to meet people, rather than leaving him wondering how to go about it. Provided a hiding place for his seeming inability to act normal.
Recollections of the day were few but vivid. When he'd been around eight, there'd been a party at school. The teacher had made brownies and given the students a half-hour respite from lessons. (A welcome relief, since he wasn't very good at most of them.) But he hadn't had a costume. Hadn't known how to reply when the other kids asked where it was. Not wanting to be left out, he'd pocketed a watercolor pallet and sneaked to the bathroom.
The teacher (he wished he could remember her name) had walked in as he'd smeared green and blue on his face, a pathetic attempt at a turtle. Fear of punishment had caused his laughter. But her kindness as she knelt, wiped away tears and pigment with a scratchy, brown paper towel, had calmed him. "Wait here," she'd instructed. It had taken all his courage not to run home.
After some minutes, she'd returned, an old white sheet in one hand, black marker and pair of scissors in the other. "The nurse won't miss this." She'd traced eyeholes, helped him cut them out. She'd asked questions. About his mother and what it was like at home. Questions he was at a loss for how to answer. Finally, she'd draped the cloth over his head. "There," she'd declared. "Gotham Elementary has its own ghost."
Even as he'd gotten taller and the sheet no longer went beyond his knees, that costume had remained his go-to. He'd venture out to the rest of his building, knocking on paint-chipped doors and pushing broken buzzers. Having learned to stay away from doors that yelling or funny smells emanated from, he hadn't gotten a lot of candy. What he had collected he'd shared with Penny. The wax lips became a free toy. He wasn't sure his memory of startling his mother and being tickled until he couldn't breathe was real or imagined.
At twelve, he was told he was too old to go trick-or-treating. He'd starting scrounging for change to buy hard candies at Helm's Pharmacy. They weren't particularly appetizing, but they'd been what he could afford. Only a few kids rang, a number that dwindled further every year. Most neighbors kept their distance, likely aware he was troubled. Cinnamon discs and butterscotch drops had loitered around the apartment for months. He'd sucked on them in an attempt to cut down on his smoking, just to save money. It hadn't worked.
Y/N hadn't spoken about the holiday, not the way she had other special occasions. At first, he'd thought it had slipped her mind. Work, planning their honeymoon, completing the red tape required to meld all aspects of their lives had taken up much of their time. But, given her reluctance to talk in detail about her past heartache, he'd come to assume her Halloweens had been unpleasant. He was certain he could change that.
Sitting on the dingy, dark green plastic seat of the train car, he giggled to himself, chest puffing up as he straightened. They'd been man and wife for eight whole days. Movies and songs said love was supposed to be somewhere between serendipitous and fated. A happy accident that was meant to be. Lying awake at night, he would find himself wondering where they were on that scale. If the emotions swirling through him - the excitement of belonging, the fear of fucking up - were what every newlywed felt. Then Y/N would snuggle closer in her sleep, murmur nonsense into his skin, and for a few minutes he'd be at peace.
Years had been spent trying to figure out who he was. Trying to find an identity, his role within the world. While he was still searching, it had been far easier to become accustomed to the role of "husband" than he'd dreamed.
Teaching his wife about events across the city had been a delight. Gotham Village's Annual Costume Extravaganza was a parade that went all the way to Gotham Square. He'd participated a couple of times, never formally registering but slipping into the clown section. It had been exhilarating. Had allowed him to pretend, for a little while, that he was being seen. That the crowds lining the sidewalks were cheering for him. Signs for extravagant balls were plastered on billboards and lampposts throughout the streets; he'd have gladly attended and shown her off. A haunted house was being held in a building in his old neighborhood, a fundraiser for the orphanage. He hadn't brought that up.
In the end, once he'd explained trick-or-treaters went from apartment to apartment, they'd decided on a cozy evening at home. The details had been left to her. Whatever she'd plan, he'd love it. He wondered what she'd disguise herself as. Would she be a sexy devil or nurse, like he'd seen on a sit-com? The notion sparked a fire in his cheeks.
Given how busy he'd be, he'd stay dressed as plain, old Carnival. Part of him regretted accepting two gigs, especially on a Sunday. He would have preferred her company. But he wanted to put the money towards the wedding band he'd put on layaway. (Even though they had one account, he wasn't going to let her chip in for it.) He should already be wearing it for all of Gotham to see.
The lurch of the subway prompted him to rise and grasp the pole grip. His stance widened as it came to a halt, knees bending with the instinct of a man who'd ridden public transportation since he was a boy. As soon as the graffiti-covered doors parted, he stepped out onto the platform and ascended the stairs, eager to share his new insurance information with Dr. Ludlow.
~~~~~
Scratchy violins and the hum of a theremin. Shrill shrieks and cracks of thunder. A cackle resounded, then a pipe organ, playing a melody in a minor key.
There was no doubt about it. Halloween spirit had saturated 4A.
NCB's Movie Marathon Mayhem had begun at 10:00 AM. Y/N had had it on since getting out of the shower, hoping to catch a horror classic while she decorated the apartment and prepared Bloody Mary mix. As she hung cotton batting between the television's rabbit ears, creating a long, narrow spider-web, she realized they were only playing cheesy B-movies. Giant insects threatening buildings. Science experiments gone wrong. Alien invasions. Oh well. At least she wouldn't have to pay much attention to get the gist of the plots.
The orange plastic platter, black bats along its edges, had been an impulse buy. She thought its array of sugary skeletons, candy bracelets, and Jolly Jack chocolate bars would be well received. But having seen only one or two kids in the lobby, she had no idea how many children lived in their building. She hoped she'd bought enough.
The cardstock window decorations she'd found were festive and matched Arthur's sweet nature. One portrayed a warted, green witch flying on a broom past a full moon. On the other, a ghost and mouse shared a pillowcase of candy and wished a "Happy Halloween." She held the tape dispenser between her teeth as she stuck them to their white front door.
Just then, the elevator dinged. Glancing to her left, she saw Arthur stroll down the cheerfully lit hallway. Buoyant expression on him, despite his white, blue, and red make-up being streaked from sweat. Striped prop bag on his shoulder and carved pumpkin cradled in his arms. "The store owner was going to throw it out," he explained with a half hug. "But he let me have it as a tip."
Classic, triangular eyes evoked the annual carving contest her parents had taken part of back home. Her father had been well-known in the community, being the town's only doctor. Entering the competition had been expected. They'd never won but enjoyed it all the same. Y/N had picked out the patterns and scooped out the squash's slimy innards. Her mother had baked the seeds. Peals of their laughter echoed in her ears, and a lump formed in her throat.
She swallowed hard against it. Dammit, Y/N. Get it together. This was supposed to be a special night for Arthur and her. She needed to distract herself. One of his curls peeked out from under his bald-cap and green wig. She twirled a strand around her finger. "With that toothy grin, it just might be your twin," she said. He pecked her temple, the kiss sticky from greasepaint. She lit the half-melted candles using his red lighter and put the jack-o-lantern just outside their door.
While he freshened his paint in the bedroom, she slinked into the bathroom to change. Arthur's and her routines were closely aligned; keeping her costume hidden had not been easy. The headband holding the furry cat ears was quite stiff, its teeth a tad sharp on her scalp. Once it was in place, she hid it under her hair. The lint on her form-fitting stretch top and leggings reminded her why she rarely wore all black. She retrieved her brown eyeliner from the nearby shelf and started in on her whiskers.
Arthur's footsteps neared, heavy due to his clown shoes, and Y/N turned to lean back on the sink. His thin lips parted as he scanned her body, forehead furrowed in pleasant surprise. His reaction planted a seed of bliss in her belly, one that bloomed every second they regarded each other. The lunch she'd have to spring for was well worth the pink shells of his ears. Eventually, she held out the fluffy, wired tail and a safety pin. "Would you pin this just below my waistband?"
Fingers grazing hers, he took it and sat on the toilet lid. He cupped her hips and pulled her closer, positioned her until the dampness of his breath hit a bare sliver of her back. "Hold still," he murmured, his voice sending a tingle through her. At his gentle ministrations, the spandex of her leggings felt snugger. "Did you- Did you read my journal?"
A faint click of metal as the pin closed. "No." She colored the tip of her nose, frowned at how lackluster the shade was. "I'd never do that. Even if I'm dying for a preview of your material. Why?"
"No reason." A soft huff, his shy smile clear in his answer. "I have an idea." He handed her a washcloth and hurried out of the room. She was patting her face dry when he returned, a fine tipped brush and pot of black greasepaint in his hand. "This'll look better."
Her brow arched. She'd only had her make-up done once; Patricia had invited her when they'd first met. Such an outing was not her preference, but Y/N had accepted, being new in town and wanting to learn about her colleague. There'd been champagne at the counter, which she'd sipped until she'd spent too much on eyeshadow and apricot scrub. The next morning, she'd put the products and a note on Patricia's desk: "I'll never forgive you. Thanks!"
The heat radiating from Arthur prompted her to close the gap between them. She craned her neck towards him, slid her palms to his yellow vest until she held him just below his ribs. His forefinger curled under her chin, lifted it slightly and angled it to the right. The cool, wet brush met her fevered skin. The dusty smell of the greasepaint blended with a whiff of stale cigarette smoke and traces of his sweat. She licked her lips.
The vibration of his chuckle was felt before heard. "I really like your costume," he said lowly. Two more ticklish caresses of the bristles on the apple of her cheek. "If you're not careful, I might werewolf and go wild."
She stretched closer to him, the fervor in his tone going straight to her center. Though he'd been growing bolder, his cocky side wasn't often revealed. She wanted it, thirsted to see more of the wild horse kicking inside him. Her touch ran over his chest, until she dipped under his black suspenders and pulled. "Are you going to gobble me up?"
Teasing strokes on her nose. "Maybe." Then his thumb whispered along her jaw and guided her face upwards. His kiss was supple, slow, a drag of his mouth as his tongue sought entry. She yielded, the simmer of anticipation bringing her to her toes. He groaned deeply and palmed her thigh, then fondled the curve of her rear-
The ding-dong of the doorbell halted them. He lifted his head and laughed, gaze sparkling. "I got paint on you."
She twisted in his arms and looked in the mirror. The whiskers caught her eye, embellished at the ends with dainty curlicues - his skill never ceased to impress her. Red brightened her lips and streaks of white were on her cheek. "It's all right. They'll just know I've been necking with a clown."
~~~~~
The sound of the bell continued. Over and over and over. More than it ever had in Otisburg. There were mummies, ghosts, a couple of skeletons. A superhero proudly displayed his red cape and blue tights, and a kid in her karate robe went on about her yellow belt. A tiny clown, too young to walk, was brought by her sister. As Arthur made funny faces, the baby cooed and tried to take his red, foam nose. Arthur parted with it gladly.
Only one member of the Wayne family appeared, slicked back hair and pompous pout making the disguise complete. The man accompanying the boy introduced himself as their upstairs neighbor and shook their hands. After one look at Y/N, he nudged Arthur's bicep. "So, she's the one keeping half the building up at night. Good on you, pal." Arthur blinked in confusion as she ushered the guy away, red-faced and muttering about his nerve.
Arthur was overly generous, giving out fistfuls of sweets while taking a few extra seconds to gather his nerves and compliment the costumes he liked best. It felt good to interact with strangers without constantly second guessing himself. Y/N would rub his arm or kiss his shoulder and tell him what a great job he was doing. "Kids are easy," he said, refilling the candy dish. But he reveled in her praises, anyway. And the knowledge that meeting the neighbors was going well.
Clean-up required little effort. The jack-o-lantern sat on their kitchen table, flames flickering as the wicks burned away. The door decor was packed safely for use next year. His plaid blazer was slung over the back of a dining chair and his wig was off. Y/N's decision to leave her whiskers on pleased him - she made a damn sexy cat. He pocketed the last few pieces of candy to snack on during the remainder of the evening.
The Sunday Night Special Presentation she'd picked out, a made-for-TV horror movie, began at 9:00 PM on GBC. Most of its airtime was punctuated by her tipsy snickers and legal wisecracks, which was typical when they watched something stupid. Yet, as the show went on, she grew quieter, barely speaking between sips of her third cocktail. As they sat on the sofa, her posture stiffened. Forearms crossed over her breasts. Her nails dug into her upper arm.
The change started two-thirds of the way into the show, when the plot about a doll running amok twisted into a story about a professional woman trying to assert herself against the demands of her mother. Against the expectations of availability. To fight for the simplicity of having dinner and peace and quiet. It resonated with him, which felt weird. Especially when the film cut to black, the implication being the mother would meet a violent end at the hands of her possessed daughter.
A cheerful jingle came on. Puerto Rico was a direct flight from Gotham Airport, it advertised, a flight that lasted "two hours and fifteen tropical minutes." They should get out while the weather was still good. The juxtaposition of mood broke him out of his ponderings. He flicked off the blaring television with the remote. Then he heard Y/N sniffling.
She set her glass on the coffee table, a slight tremble in her hand. "I need some air," she whispered as she rose, then went out onto the fire escape.
Arthur rubbed his thigh and pressed his lips together. He wasn't used to seeing her cry. Not from sadness. Should he follow her? Give her time? Both had worked previously, depending on the situation. But he wasn't sure what had upset her, what situation they were in now.
Exhaling sharply, he grabbed her glass and dumped the rest of the drink down the kitchen sink. Rinsed their dinner plates and put the slow cooker in the fridge. When he'd finished making decaf coffee ten minutes later, she still hadn't returned. He ambled towards the ajar glass door and stepped out.
Moonlight outlined her shapely figure and reflected off her hair, the silver a contrast to the orange glow of the streetlamps illuminating her face. Her stare seemed fixated on the street below. He followed it to see a group of ghouls and goblins spraying shaving cream on a shop window. A couple, one he'd see occasionally when out for a cigarette, walked down the sidewalk. A woman was half-carrying a drunk man towards a bus stop.
Upon clearing her throat, Y/N spoke. "I may not look like it, but I had a great time with you tonight. The movie just got to me." Relieved, Arthur sidled next to her, wrapped his arm about her back. Her head fell to his shoulder and she smoothed her hand over his stomach. "I don't mean to hide from you. Someday you'll know the details of my earlier life." She scoffed. "When I'm ready to think about them." He entwined their fingers and kissed her hairline, avoiding the wired tips of her cat ears.
Shivering, she took a shaky breath. "There are no skeletons in my closet. Only disappointments." Her voice cracked as she beamed at him, cupped his cheek, and pressed her face to his. "Knowing I'd get to have you would have made those years so much easier."
He held her tightly, massaging between her shoulders. She'd been speaking about herself, but he couldn't help thinking it was about him, too. His years with Penny. His stints in Arkham. The loneliness, the isolation, the endless anger and yearning to be more than a speck of dirt no one cared for. His journal was full of questions about where the hell his one and only was. If he'd known she'd be real, tangible instead of a figment, would existence have hurt less?
Wincing, he tried to push through those thoughts. To focus on her instead of himself. What mattered was that Y/N needed him. Perhaps a joke would cheer her. "I was thinking the other night of how easy it is to smile around you," he said. "You tickle my funny bone." Amusement bubbled in her throat, music to his ears. She released a contented sigh and nuzzled the crook of his neck.
Peaceful stillness ensued as the minutes passed. Though the breeze was chill, goosebumps forming on his pale skin, her affection kept his heart warm. His fingertips rubbed circles into her lower back, and she offered a pleasured hum. Across the way, footsteps pounded. He glanced to see a kid darting up the street, plastic pumpkin pail in tow. The boy's scream was filled with boundless energy: "Happy Halloween, Gotham!"
Snorting, Y/N took Arthur's hand and led him inside. The cheap tail she wore bounced with every exaggerated swivel of her hips. "I've behaved all evening, which your werewolf comment made extraordinarily difficult." She looped her arms around him and flashed a come-hither stare. "May I have a goodie?"
The scrape of her nails on his scalp coiled a knot in his abdomen. "Aren't you supposed to say 'trick-or-treat?'" he asked huskily.
"Your pussycat needs a petting or two." She closed the bedroom door behind them. "Maybe even a mauling."
His brows shot up on a hitched giggle. Then he palmed her hip while she started in on his buttons. Before she got too far, he traced a whisker with the pad of his thumb. Let their foreheads meet and pecked her eyelids. "Only if you give me something good to eat." He pressed into her, his enjoyment relentless, not waiting for her reply before devouring her mouth.

warning: unedited ! i was rushing to post this before christmas but i’ll be going over my fics soon to edit everything. thank you!
------------
you were a photographer. you liked going to free shows around town, taking pictures of everyone in it. you liked how music swayed them and made them live in the moment. photography was your way of immortalising that fleeting moment. still, you weren’t as successful as other photographers to make it as your main source of income and that was okay. as long as you get to share your art with an audience, you knew you were doing something. you were on a break from your shift at baskin robbins when your phone notified that you just received a message.
helenepamburn.photography: Hello i just want to say i absolutely love your work!!
your phone read. helene pemburn was a photographer you’ve never heard of before. you decided to look at her instagram and check out her work and damn, it is amazing. it seems as though her muse was harry styles, your best friend’s favourite male artist. you have listened to his songs before, even downloaded his first album and he was good.
35mmdiary: oh my god!! thank you so much. i love yours too!! portrait is something that i’m not entirely good at :-)
helenepamburn.photography: Im helene, by the way ! What camera set-up do you usually use? 35mmdiary: hi, helene!! i’m y/n. i usually just use a minolta xg-1 camera and i switch up on the lenses…i’m more of a film photographer than a digital one…
helenepamburn.photography: Ah! so you don’t use dlsr cameras?? 😮
35mmdiary: i do but i just take whatever photo and then edit it on lightroom…with my old presets hehehe
35mmdiary: oh im sorry i have to go i have to finish my shift!!
the conversation ended at that at first but weeks into it and you found yourself really enjoying talking to helene. she became an instant friend, exchanging tips and tricks on photography. she would even talk about how it was touring with harry and etcetera. you wanted to meet each other soon but it was hard, seeing as your finals was right around the corner and harry releasing his new album.
———
“helene, who are you talking to? you’ve been on that phone for so long!” jeff azzof asked. it wasn’t unlike helene to type away at her phone 24/7. she was usually in her corner, editing harry’s photos for the world to see. “y/n,” she muttered. “who?”
“i found her on instagram and she really has amazing shots! look,” helene said, showing your instagram to jeff. “and this is all film! no editing,” she praised. “oh wow, she is good,” jeff commended. “yeah, well…about that. i think i’m gonna take a break from work first,” helene started. jeff looked at her quizzically. “i know harry’s about to release his album and there’s the thing at the forum and etcetera but i think y/n is gonna be a good replacement, no?”
“does harry know?” he asked. he was a little concerned that helene’s leave was a little sudden. sure, she’s been working hard, always going where harry was and taking photographs of him but still, it was abdrupt and it wasn’t quite what he was expecting. “ah, no not yet. i was hoping you could talk to him about it?” she shyly asked. harry’s been a ball of stress lately and helene knew that if something out of the schedule were to happen, harry would freak. “helene…” jeff warned. helene looked at him, practically begging him to go tell harry. jeff only sighed and nodded. “thank you!” she gushed. “i owe you one, big time,”
———
it was almost the holiday break, and you can already feel the christmas in l.a.—it’s not snowing, particularly and it’s not as iconic as new york christmas but you can already see christmas lights hanging downtown and at the grove. starbucks already released their holiday drinks and their holiday cups. you were finishing your last paper for the term, ready to finally get back to photography. you finished ahead of everyone else in class and begged some of your professors to let you take some quizzes and tests in advance. perhaps you were lucky this christmas because they allowed you to and you passed your term with good grades.
helenepemburn.photography: y/n I have a question to ask…
35mmdiary: sure what is it??
helenepemburn.photography: Are you done with classes? The semester?? 35mmdiary: yeah why?? helenepemburn.photography: How would you feel about replacing me as a photographer??? Im about to go on a break and I want you to be my fill-in??? You will be paid the same fee as I do during those days too
35mmdiary: What??? are you sure?? helenepemburn.photography: Yes!! The team will be in l.a. next week for a couple of interviews and etc so would be able to meet you and show you the ropes and hang out!!
35mmdiary: sure!! send me the details…i’m free until christmas anyway :)
helenepemburn.photography: See you then !! Im so excited to finally meet you !!
———
it’s been a few days and your best friend was absolutely ecstatic to know that you were harry styles’ photographer for a few weeks. you’ve been thinking about backing out but from your conversations with helene, it seems like she was really craving for a short break. she told you about going to japan and malibu with harry to take behind the scenes photographs. she loved it, of course but she was getting drained. besides, you will be paid a good amount of money for your services, unlike some of the previous bands who told you that you will have a shoutout for the ‘free’ photos you would give them. artists who don’t support artists suck, don’t they?
“i can’t believe! harry fucking styles!” your best friend, gina, exclaims. she was a harrie, the biggest one you’ve seen. she went to the forum, the closing venue for his first solo world tour, bought merch, and runs a fan account on twitter. “shh! keep it down, gina! it’s just a temporary job. i just took it as a favour to helene and also because it pays well. i can pay a little more to my college debt,” you muttered. “still! once you’re on tour with him, don’t you ever forget me,” she fake cries. “i just want a video greeting for harry, okay? like the one that i got you when i met adore delano,” she told you. you nodded and she squealed, jumpy in her seat because she was about to receive a personalised video from harry styles.
———
helenepamburn.photography: Im free right now if you want to meet up!! Im in la and i forgot how much i hated la traffic ://
35mmdiary: sure! where do you wanna meet? helenepamburn.photography: Harry rented an airbnb for all of us in beverly hills…would you like to meet in a coffee shop near it?? Im really craving for american starbucks right now 35mmdiary: sure! i’ll meet you there at 2:30? helenpamburn.photography: Ok and then we can go to the airbnb to meet up with jeff so he could walk you through the details sound good? 35mmdiary: okay…i’ll see you in a bit! be safe !
you immediately went inside your shower to take a bath. you were finally meeting helene! you didn’t know who jeff was but you decided to dress a little nicer today just in case this jeff guy was a little strict. opting for minimal make up, your favourite floral pants, white shirt, and your boots, you decided to head out with your iPad and film camera to show helene some of your photos.
it’s almost 2:30 when you arrived at the coffee shop. helene was already there, waving at you excitedly. you smiled and jogged up to her. “helene!” you called as she greeted you with a hug. “y/n! i’m so happy i get to finally meet you!” she laughs. “i hope it’s alright, i already ordered for you,” she says. “oh! thank you. how much was it? i’ll pa—“
“don’t be silly now! it’s okay, you don’t have to worry about it. now, tell me, how have you been?” she asked. you chuckled. “i’m good! i finished all my papers early to focus a little bit on my photography,” you tell her. “college is really sucking the life out of me! i worked part time in baskin robbins too so the stress is just too much,” you grumbled. “ah, well, i promise photographing harry isn’t that stressful. he’s quite chill with whatever you present him as long as it’s in black and white,” she joked. “kidding aside, harry’s whole crew is kind. very approachable and very good people,” she informed you. her words brought comfort over you as you were worrying about how they would treat a newbie. “i’m just really taking a break because i’m so tired! besides, my best friend will get married on christmas and i wanted to be there and take some pictures,” she says.
“you did mention that you like wedding photographs too,” you told her. “i love them! they’re so fun and the vibe is so different. i’m a bridesmaid so i just have to be there, you know? i’m wearing a really cute dress too! here, i’ll show you,” she gushed. she took out her phone and opened the picture. it was a great dress. it was a long peach dress and helene said that all the bridesmaids had dresses inspired by the colours of the sunset. “that’s so cool! i wanna get married someday but then again, not really,” you shared. helene nodded at that. you both spent the afternoon together, walking around beverly hills and just talking.
“hey, let’s go back to the airbnb so i can introduce you to everyone!” she gushed. she booked an uber and then immediately dragged you to the car. you loved how chatty and enthusiastic she was, basically telling you her life story and her friend’s life story in just a few hours. you rode the car once it arrived and it zoomed past the fancy beverly hills neighbourhood. it was a few minutes after when you arrived at a big house. “we’re here! i’m so excited for you to meet jeff, mitch, sara, claire, and everyone else!” she squealed. she beat you into paying for the fare and then dragged you again to the main, where she knocked and cursed at jeff for not opening the door immediately in french.
“fuck’s sake, helene! hold on!” a man called from the inside. “that’s jeff, he’s the oldest in this house but doesn’t seem like it,” she snickered. you were about to reply to helene when a friendly-looking man opened the door. he was scowling at helene, a facial expression she only chuckled at. “hello, jeff! this is y/n, y/n, this is jeff,” she introduced. “hi, it’s nice to meet you,” you told jeff. “same here,” he brushed off. “come in, enter,” he said cooly. you frowned, helene said that they were nice people but jeff seems so intimidating. “give the poor girl a break, jeffrey!” helene said. she guided you to the living room and made you sit on the the couch. “so, i take you’re helene’s replacement while she’s away?” he asked.
“uh—yeah,” you replied, picking on the loose thread of your white shirt. he chuckled at your nervousness. “you dress like harry,”
“sorry?” you asked. helene laughed, noticing how similar you dressed with the star. “she does! i just noticed that!” your friend exclaimed.
“anyways, i’ll be fetching some papers and documents you have to sign. harry’s a big star after all, we can’t trust everyone,” he said before going to god-knows-where. “i’m sorry! he’s not really like that. it’s just that many people before you came here with me as an intern or something but they always end up leaking photos, putting harry in trouble and all that,” helene apologised. “oh, i totally understand. it’s no problem,” you reassured. you were fumbling on your shirt, once more, when jeff arrived. “here,” he put the folder on the coffee table. “read the document over and sign it if you agree, of course…it’s just about harry’s privacy and all that,” he said. “call me when you’re don, i’ll just make us a drink,” he left the room again and probably into the kitchen. you read over the document a few times before signing on the required pages. it was basically concerned with harry’s privacy and how you couldn’t sell harry’s photographs to the tabloids. helene was there with you to explain the whole contract and how the ropes would work.
“she’s done, jeff!” she called. jeff emerged from the kitchen with a tray of iced coffee and some fruits. he laid the tray down on the table gently and took the folder from your grasp. you watched as he made sure that you signed all of the pages on the papers and smiled. “welcome to the team!” he suddenly beamed.
“thanks,” you smiled at him.
“i’m sorry for being rude earlier. it’s just that some photographers and ‘newbies’ take this job for granted. so, anyway,” he coughed. “help yourself to some coffee and tell me about yourself,”
“well, uh—i’m y/n y/l/n. 21 years old and i’m currently taking up business ad. i really love photography but my parents aren’t really set on supporting me have it as my profession in the future. i, uh, also take photographs of artists in free shows but i mostly do film, if that’s okay? harry’s photos will be developed after four hours if we’re here in l.a. but probably more than that if we’re not here, which i’m assuming won’t happen? i have a friend from one of my electives who knows how to develop film,” you told him.
“it’s worth the wait, jeff! do you have some photos, y/n?” helene interjected. you nodded and took out your iPad.
“uh, you can just swipe through the images of the scenes and people i took,” you told him, opening the photos app and into your digital portfolio. you handed jeff the ipad and waited anxiously. “wow, these are good. helene actually showed me your instagram already and i’m impressed. now, we will give you some money for the films and the development process when you start working, which is tomorrow—“
“ah, it’s okay. the salary is enough to cover for everything,” you reassured. “no, no. i insist. helene also had the same budget. besides, you’re doing us a favour for agreeing to this job instantly,” he said. you nodded shyly. “anyways, you could stay here in the house or something since helene will leave the day after but that’s your choice, completely.” he said. “i’ll just stay in my apartment,” you told him. he nodded and looked at the time. “well, dinner’s about to start. i suggest you attend so you could meet everyone,” he smiled. you nodded, not really wanting to piss your new boss. “i’m sure everyone’s excited to meet the baby of the team,” he chuckled.
“ah! i’m so excited for you to meet claire and sara. you’re gonna love them!” helene squealed. “wait here, okay? i’ll just change into my pyjamas,” she said. you nodded and watched her leave the living room, leaving you alone with jeff.
“so, where did you grow up?” he asked. “i actually grew up here in california and then moved here in l.a. for my studies,” you informed him.
“that’s great,” he nodded. “let’s just wait for everyone else to come,” he said. you nodded and spent the following minutes chatting with helene and jeff. he may have been intimidating at first but he was a pretty chill guy. you liked his humour and immediately clicked once helene told him about the time some bands were lowballing you with a shoutout, to which jeff told you you should be charging more for your shots. it was nearing eight when two girls barged in the door, bringing some takeout.
“sara, claire!” jeff greeted. “this is y/n, the newest baby of our team,” he said. you waved at them shyly.
“she dresses like harry,” sara observed. “that’s what i thought so too!” jeff chuckled. he took the paper bags from the girls. “i’ll just fix this up in the kitchen while your girls chat,” he said while going back to the kitchen. “jeff is such a dad to all of us,” sara said once she sat in front of you with claire. “yeah, it’s nice knowing that there’s parental love going around here or it would be such a mess! mitch is the slobbiest person ever while sara here, hates his mess!” claire said. “so, how did you know helene was about to leave?” she asked. she wasn’t asking in an intruding way, she was just curious.
“well, helene and i are ‘internet friends’,” you told them. “i’m a photographer and i mostly use film. it was her who told me to come fill-in for her while she was away,”
“wait, youre 35mmdiary?” sara asked. you nodded. “she’s been raving about your work and harry seemed to like it too! i follow you on social media!”
“me too! i love your work! so, so good,” claire added.
“thanks, guys! that really means a lot to me,” you said. you took a mental note to follow them back once you go back home.
“where are the guys, anyway?” helene asked. “we couldn’t start dinner without them,”
“mitch told me he was with harry, buying some chinese food. they’re on their way back, though.” sara said.
“oh well, let’s just wait for them to come back,” helene said. you girls nodded and chatted for a bit until eighteen minutes later, the door opened, revealing the harry styles himself and mitch.
“i told you, haz! you should’ve bought soup dumplings instead of the fried ones,” a guy with long hair complained.
“but there might be holes in the dumplings and all the soup would fall out. fried dumplings are the safe option, honestly,”
“guys—“
“sarah, tell harry that soup dumplings are better that fried o—“ he stopped, just realising that there was another person in the house. “hello, who are you?” he asked, utterly confused.
“i’m the photographer filling in for helene while she’s away,” you spoke. “ah, well in that case, hello! my name is mitch,” he said. when he noticed that harry wasn’t speaking soon, he spoke again. “this is harry and that over there is adam,”
“oh yeah, i know. hi, harry,” you shyly waved at him. you also waved a greeting to adam to which he returned. harry gave you a tight-lipped smile. you always imagined this moment to be somewhat chill but right now, your cheeks were absolutely burning because of how beautiful he was. pictures didn’t do him justice, no offense to helene but it was the reality. “i’m y/n,” you added.
“hi, y/n. i’m harry but mitch already beat me to it,” he muttered. mitch only laughed and told him to go to jeff so he could set up the table.
“she kinda dresses like you, no?” mitch commented once he thought they were out of earshot.
it was less than ten minutes when jeff called you girls to go to the dining room. you were sat beside helene and in front of harry, who seemed to look everywhere but you.
“well, this was supposed to be a simple dinner but it isn’t. let’s welcome y/n into the family and bid farewell to helene,” jeff started. “everyone say ‘welcome to the family, y/n’!” there was a chorus of welcomes around the table and you only managed to mutter a shy ‘thank you’ to everyone.
“so, how did you know helene?” mitch asked. “oh we met through the internet,” you replied. “she messaged me about my work and then i looked at her profile a bit and decided that i loved he work too,”
“we’ve known each other for months but only met today, actually.” helene said. “huh, i would’ve thought that you knew each other for years but then again, helene has always been the noisy one,” adam commented.
“you’re just as noisy as i am! i cant believe this is how you treat me on my last day until i come back,” helene faked sobbed.
“let’s jusy eat dinner, yeah? poor y/n must’ve been so tired and hungry from all the talk you’ve been drilling into her,” adam said. everyone nodded and took their food. you shyly opened your chinese take-out box.
“y/n, i’m sorry if this is rude but i haven’t seen any of your work before,” mitch suddenly said.
“i’m not really a big photographer,” you started. “honestly, i just go to free shows and then offer my services for a cheaper price,”
“you should definitely see her work, babe. so, so, good! she does film and that’s like, super hard,” sarah added. babe? “y/n, show him your ipad so they’ll believe me!”
“alright...” you nodded and fished for your ipad, opening the album that contained your beat shots so far. you handed it to mitch. you stared at him for any reactions and was glad to see him focus on your pictures, zooming in on some of them.
“these aren’t filters? damn, you’re good. yo, look at this, adam! isn’t this the band you’ve been listening to on soundcloud?” mitch asked, showing adam your photograph of the vocalist of peach pit. adam looks over and gapes.
“y/n, this is so good! what’s your username on insta? i’ll give you a follow!”
“it’s 35mmdiary! i’ve been showing you gus her work for months now,” helene grumbled.
the dinner started and ended like that, with friendly banter from what seems to be a loving environment. jeff was definitely the father of the group. you liked everyone but harry. he hasn’t talked to you all night, just stealing some glances at your direction. helene booked you an uber and told you to text her once you’re home. you nodded and bid her good bye before riding into the car.
———
“harry, what do you think of y/n?” jeff asked once you left.
“pretty cool girl, yeah?” he commented.
“you barely looked at her! she’s quite lovely,” claire added.
“probably because he finds her cute or something,” mitch teased. “always does that! playing hard to get but really, what is there to get?”
“shut up, mitch,” he blushed. it was true. harry did sort of find tou attractive. you were so kind to everyone, taking their compliments gracefully. you got along so well with the other members and he wanted to talk to you but adam and helene hogged the conversation. perhaps he should talk to you alone, sometime?
“okay so, christmas is coming soon and once again, we will be needing to have our secret santa!” sarah said, changing the subject as harry looked like a poor fish gaping.
“should we include y/n?” adam asked.
“of course! she’s a part of our family now, even if it’s temporarily,” helene said.
“yeah and we should take you out instead...” harry teased.
“hey! that’s not nice,”
“well, she’ll be coming in tomorrow and basically everyday to accompany harry on photoshoots and to get some shots as well. we could talk to her about it tomorrow,” jeff informed. everybody nodded at that.
“gotta go back to my room, m’tired from today,” harry yawned. everybody said good night as he left tahe living room.
———
unknown to them, harry was actually looking theough your instagram. he decided to follow you once he reached his assigned room. everybody was right, you are good. he was so excited to have you as a part of the team.
harrystyles: Nice meeting you today, y/n. x
35mmdiary: hi hi!! it was nice meeting you today too :-)
harrystyles: Your works are lovely. I’m so excited to see more of your work.
35mmdiary: thanks ! i hope you like what you see so far. thanks for hiring me by the way
harrystyles: It’s quite alright! I loved what Helene showed me. I tried to get into film photography but it never worked out. So hard to figure out the settings. :(
35mmdiary: i actually started with dispposable cameras! they really helped me know what i like! i could teach you some of the stuff i know if you like. im not a pro or anything but i think there’s a few things i could teach you?
harrystyles: That sounds great! When are we doing it?
harrystyles: Can we do it tomorrow? I’m free tomorrow.
harrystyles: Only if it’s okay with you. :)
35mmdiary: yes of course ! i could meet you in the house tomorrow morning ?
harrystyles: No, it’s okay. I’ll just have someone pick you up just send me your address. I’m not a serial killer, I promise.
you gave harry your address and your number, just in case he needed it. that night, you looked for your spare disposable films while harry told jeff that you would be accompanying him tomorrow. jeff only teased harry but allowed it anyway.
———
“good morning!” you chirped as you entered the black range rover. harry smiled at you. the driver at the driver’s seat nodded at you.
“good morning, love. i got you breakfast, if it’s okay. if you don’t like it i could eat it and we could go somewhere else for breakfast,” harry rambled, offering you a brown bag. you looked into it and saw a ham and cheese croissant—your favourite sandwich.
“this will do just fine. this is my favourite sandwich,” you said as you dug into the bag to get your sandwich. “would you like some? we could share if you like,” you offered. harry shook his head no, telling you that he already ate the same sadnwich as you did.
“by the way,” you started as you swallowed the pastry. “i got some disposable cameras that you could use in my bag,”
“you shouldn’t have...” harry pouted. “i basically hogged your whole day and now you’re giving me stuff too?”
“it’s okay. i wanted to. as long as we end just in time for me and helene to say goodbye to each other,” you smiled.
“lunch is on me then! i know this place near santa monica that served the best chicken wings!” he declared. you chuckled at his etermination to get even with you. “what are we doing today, by the way?”
“well, i was thinking we could go on a classic photowalk. it’s basically just us walking and taking photos of the things we like,” you told him. “i was thinking we could take photos downtown...” you trailed off, not realizing that the paparazzi might see harry. “or somewhere else you like so we could avoid the paparazzi,”
“we’ll go downtown then!” he said, not really caring about tomorrow’s tabloids. harry liked your presence. for some reason, it made him feel at ease. he didn’t care if you’d be labelled as harry’s girlfriend tomorrow. he just wanted to have a nice afternoon walking around and taking photos that he like.
“well, for me, it’s the perfect place. if you’re into portraits, you could photograph people! if you’re into sceneries, you could do that too,” you gushed as you finished the last of your croissant. “i like sceneries and candids a lot. taking portraits is something that i’m not really good at,”
“at least you know something! i’m such a beginner,” he admitted. “drop us off here, please, thank you.” harry told the driver. the driver nodded and stopped the car. harry immediately went out, dragging tou by the hand to hide from onlookers. it’s not like he didn’t want to meet fans, he did. it was just that he’d rather be unnoticed when dealing with private matters, such as spending time with a girl whom he finds cute to gain some brownie points. he led you to an empty alley.
“you alright?” he asked. you nodded and fished out for the cameras in your bag.
“harry? here are the cameras. there are 36 shots per camera and because i brought you theee, you could do more than a hunderd. just give them back to me after you use it so i could have my friend develop them,” you breathed.
“thank you so much, y/n! you didn’t have to because i also have my own camera. just don’t know how to adjust it,” he frowned, looking down at the expensive camera hanging on his chest.
“i could take a look at it, if you like,” you offered. harry beamed at you and nodded rapidly. that day, you spent the afternoon taking photos of people living their daily lives. it was such a great day, walking downtown with cameras at hand. the day consisted of you and him talking about the most embarrassing stories you could think of when you were younger. he told you about the many times he fell onstage during his concerts, to which you laughed at, saying that you tripped on a wire once when you were photographing a gig for a local band. onlookers wouldn’t think that you were strangers at all but you didn’t mind.
that night, at the beverly hills mansion, you and the team huddled together to pick names for the small exchange gift. you left the house with a smile on your face a few hours after, really loving the group.
“alright, who picked y/n?” harry asked as soon as he walked back in from waiting outside until you left.
“why?” mitch asked. “well--” “he obviously likes her, dumbass,” adam said.
“you just met twice why would you like her immediately?” mitch asked again, clearly missing out on something. “she’s really a nice girl. besides, what’s wrong with finding her cute?” harry asked, clearly giddy about the day he spent with you. “she’s so cute especially when i told her earlier that she looked good in what she was wearing! then, she gave me these disposable cameras,” he added, showing off the cameras hanging on his wrist. “i really wanna get her something for christmas but i think it’s a little straightforward to just give her one, no?”
“what would you do for you to get her name?” sarah asked. “i’ll pay you a hundred dollars and treat you and a friend to a nice dinner,”
“i got her,” jeff said, giving the paper to harry and harry giving another piece with a different name on it. he gave jeff 300 dollars for the dinner and the monetary gift and said thank you. he smiled with his dimples showing and retired to bed.
“he’s whipped,” mitch mouthed to sarah. sarah only nodded, really finding it cute how harry found y/n cute.
-------
you’ve been photographing harry and his band for so many days now, rarely even having the time to clean your apartment, which was fine. it was always clean, only feeling like it wasn’t because harry was at your place, going over the photographs that he would be posting on his social media. you told him that you could come by the house in beverly hills but he told you to just stay at home so it would be safer. you didn’t protest but you did stress clean for a little bit.
“i really like this photo,” he pointed at your laptop. “i think mum would really like this, yeah?”
you nodded. it wasn’t your best shot but so far, it looked like it was harry’s favourite image of himself. you were done for the night and you were tired but you didn’t want harry to leave yet. you were enjoying his company and it seems as though he was feeling the same when he decided to open a new conversation.
“so, who did you pick for secret santa?” he asked as you opened your spotify christmas playlist and played it softly on the bluetooth speaker on the coffee table. “i can’t tell you that! it would ruin the whole thing,” you replied. you were perched on your couch, facing harry.
“why not? it’s not like you got me, unless you did…” he teased.
“maybe, maybe not,” you shrugged. harry pouted but started to hum to the christmas music anyway before sipping on his hot cocoa. “you know what i would love from you?”
“what?” he asked. he’s been tearing his hair for a perfect gift for you but nothing really came up. he wanted to get you a film camera but that would be too basic. “a christmas record from you! your voice is so good,” you gushed. “it would sound so great and i’m sure you’d sing christmas classics like the one paul mccartney sang,” you mused, clearly unaware of what was going through harry’s head. he finally found a perfect gift for you. “if you ever release a christmas album, hit me up immediately! i’d stream and buy the hell out of it. i’ll even wear your christmas merch,”
--------
“everyone shut up! i’m gonna record something in my room, don’t bother me,” harry breathed as soon as he arrived in the rented home. everyone’s eyebrows shot forward. they were huddled in the living room, playing uno. “okay, i’m sorry just don’t make too much noise!” he apologised. he ran to his assigned room after that, locking his door and taking out his guitar. clueless as to where he would start off, he decided to text helene.
harry styles: Helene!
Helene.: Harry !
harry styles: Do you know y/n’s favourite Christmas songs?
Helene: Not really but she’d be into classics dont you think?? Why ??
harry styles: I kinda got her for secret Santa and I don’t know what to give.
harry styles: Do you really think she’d be into the classics? Helene: Yes now stop talking to me i have to attend the dinner rehearsals why do you have to rehearse for dinner?
that night, harry set up his personal microphone, a device that he could just slip into his laptop’s usb, and sang at least three songs that he would sing with gemma whenever he was home for the holidays.
-------
it was after harry’s successful live show at the forum. you were busy capturing every moment of the tour with your camera. gina, your best friend was in the crowd too. it was your early christmas gift for her, along with a personalised video from harry like you promised. she squealed and hug you for being the ‘best best friend ever’. you laughed and received her hugs with joy. you were supposed to have a small staff-only after show party but decided not to come. you were tired and all you wanted was sleep. you told jeff about it and he nodded, hugging you and asking you if it was okay if you left alone. you nodded and wished him a good party. that night, you went home to your apartment, looking over the new photos that your friend e-mailed you so you could show them to harry the next time you see him. you took note of the pictures you liked alot.
“where’s y/n?” harry asked as soon as he greeted everyone. “oh, she left! said she felt tired and just wanted to sleep,” jeff shouted over the loud music and the loud people. the party became bigger as staff invited friends and family to come over. harry didn’t mind, he liked crowds. harry nodded at jeff, a little disappointed because he was hoping to get to you. he would be leaving for london next week for another live show and he was sure that you wouldn’t be able to come. the live show at the forum was supposed to be the big ending for the celebration of harry’s album in america. if he wouldn’t be able to see you now, he wouldn’t see you at all, probably.
--------
it was nearing 1 am when your doorbell rang. being a light sleeper, you woke up from your slumber in the couch. you must’ve fallen to sleep while finalising images you wanted to show harry next day. you fixed the coffee table a little bit then begrudgingly walking to the door, only to reveal the man who’s been keeping you busy.
“hi, y/n. may i come in?” harry asked. you nodded and opened the door wider, the cold from your air conditioning unit greeting harry.
“what are you doing here?” you asked as you and your guest settled on your couch. “well, i was at the party and i noticed you were gone so, i decided to come by. i’m sorry if it was so sudden it’s just that, i picked you for secret santa and i wanted to give you my gift before i leave for london next week,” he rambled. he the handed you a pretty christmas box.
“thank you, harry. what about your party?” you asked. “it’s fine, they’re fine. i just wanted to be here with you more.” he smiled. “go on, open it!”
you opened the box that revealed a red sweater.
“you said you wanted christmas merch, right? that you would wear it?” he asked. you nodded and unfolded the sweater to reveal a ‘harry’ sweatshirt in red. it was the one that gina wanted for so long but in the colour pink. harry’s name was embroidered on the soft red sweater in white, and his motto ‘treat people with kindness’ was embroidered on one of the sleeves in red.
“i picked out the colours and i hope you like it! it’s not from the same manufacturer but i figured you would like it,” he said. you looked deeper into the box to find a cd and a flashdrive. the cd cover was you and harry, a selfie he took using his phone when you were out having a photowalk. “you said you wanted a christmas record and here it is,” he said. you were smiling widely and thanking harry for the thoughtful gifts he got you. “i, uh, you have to listen to the songs and text me if you liked them, alright? text me as soon as you finish it.i have to go back to the party and entertain but i’d really love to hear your thoughts on the record, okay?” he asked, standing up from his seat and kissing your forehead. you nodded and watched him go outside your door, too overwhelmed with his thoughtful gift. you inserted the flashdrive in your laptop’s usb and clicked on track 1.
track 1 was harry’s rendition for paul mccartney’s wonderful christmas time--your favourite christmas song. you casually mentioned it to him once but didn’t think that he would remember. there were 8 tracks in the flashdrive, harry’s voice and guitar playing filling your apartment. you were wearing the sweater he gave you, feeling giddy at the gifts he gave you. you just finished track 7 and waited for track 8 to play when harry’s talking voice was heard from the speakers.
“hi, y/n,” he started. “well, i hope you like my gifts for you. the truth is, jeff was actually the one who picked you and i picked claire but i bribed him so i could give you this gift. truth be told, i like you. like, i’m crushing on you and if you feel the same way, i’m waiting in the parking lot. i just wanted to say this and was wondering if you wanted to go out on a date before i go back to london for the show and the holidays. wow this feels like a goddamn movie and i sort of like it. i hope you really love my gifts. i’m waiting outs--” you stopped the audio and immediately ran to the door, opening it. it revealed harry who was sitting beside the door, waiting anxiously. once he heard you go out, he stood up and smiled at you.
“silly boy! of course i’d go out on a date with you,” you said as you hugged him. he was chuckling, thanking the heavens for giving hime a wonderful christmas.
“what about when i’m in london? how would we talk then?” he asked. “we’ll make it work, yeah? see how it plays out,” you said. you felt him put his chin on the top of your head after kissing it.
it was the perfect ending to a perfect night and as the christmas lights surround you with your wreath hung on your door, you both wished for this christmas miracle to last.

I Liked Fates Before It Was Cool!: Birthright Part 1
Prologue
Opening Chapters
Chapters 6-11, in which Hoshido’s military is extremely disorganized and only regroups because the mere idea of Ryoma is just that awesome.
Chapter 6
Not much to say here. Corrin tells Xander they’re siding with Hoshido against Garon and implores him to do the same, Xander accuses them of being brainwashed and, after repeated refusals, tries to kill Corrin. Following this is a chapter that will probably be finished during the first enemy phase unless Ryoma gets really unlucky. I suppose it makes sense that this is the shortest of the three versions of Chapter 6 as Corrin went to the border already with the Hoshidans. While it’s kind of neat that all the Hoshidan royals are playable on this map as a bit of a preview, note that this is the fourth of just seven chapters in which Ryoma has appeared as a unit prior to his formal recruitment. We get it already, the guy’s an OP powerhouse and a clear favorite of the writers.
This is also where I should probably bring up My Castle, but I don’t have much to say here as it was never a feature I particularly enjoyed. Other FEs have addressed the concept of a base for your army integrated into gameplay far better than this. Genealogy and the Tellius games and others may not let you perv on your units taking a bath or disgust them with your horrendous cooking, but what does that really add to the experience? I know, I know, a bunch of small and scattered stat boosts....
Chapter 7
Oh, silly banter in the middle of an attack while surrounded by wounded and dying soldiers. Never change, FE. But seriously, even if he’s just Cordelia with a dick whose semen produces more Cordelias let’s take the time to appreciate that Subaki is the series’s first playable male pegasus knight. Fates’s take on classes is actually very egalitarian, a fact that often gets lost in its sea of fanservice and subtle story-enforced misogyny and everything about <insert character whose gender/sexuality-related presentation offends you most>. Moving on.
I’m still not entirely clear what happens to the Hoshidan army between this chapter and the preceding one. They really appear to just break ranks and scatter: Corrin and co. go fool around in the astral plane with Lilith, Ryoma and Takumi lead some of their forces toward Izumo (why?), no one cares about Hinoka, and Sakura retreats here to Fort Jinya to tend to the wounded at a makeshift military hospital. It makes sense that the Hoshidan army wouldn’t have the strictest organization thanks to their years of protection under Mikoto’s barrier, but the problem is the game never tells us that and we’re left to infer these things based on the events of the next few chapters.
The Nohrians meanwhile are still on the offensive, but they screwed up by sending Silas’s unit to attack the fort. Silas has an unhealthy attachment to Corrin that frankly rivals Camilla’s, and his abrupt defection here because he wants to hang out with his partially amnesiac BFF undoubtedly bodes ill for anyone associated with him when news of it reaches Nohr. I guess it’s cute in my case that Silas’s obsession with Corrin knows no gender, but the guy probably steals underwear to sniff. Saizo is entirely justified in being suspicious of him.
Paralogue 1
Oh yeah, I forgot all about this chapter. Mozu’s just not as memorably meme-worthy as Donnel, and recruiting her is less frustrating since you’re not forced to make her poke things in her joining chapter. It does make the Faceless seem like more of a threat to Hoshido, although as a consequence playing through this paralogue in Conquest always feels a little weird. This plus the first Castle Invasion were mostly for EXP and support farming. For anyone wondering, I’m going to be keeping most of my characters in their default class sets since I don’t feel like grinding skills or anything elaborate like that. Also, I’m playing on Normal, so I’ve got a lot of latitude in how I play which is how I prefer FE anyway.
Chapter 8
Hinoka sums up my feelings on her and her retainers. Azama’s got some amusing lines and if I knew more about Buddhism his...interesting take on philosophy would probably be even funnier, but that’s about it. And yeah, Hinoka really just does pop onto the scene with no explanation except that she’s also trailing her brothers and I guess everyone really did forget about her. Sucks to be a late development addition.
Iago tosses the conflict ball to ensure the party’s trip to the Wind Tribe village is a rough one, though since Fuga was set on testing Corrin’s worth by sending a bunch of his tribesmen to get slaughtered by their army anyway I wonder why he even bothered. This is a rare case of a desert map that isn’t a frustrating pain in the ass, because it’s small and there are Dragon Veins to reduce the amount of sand. I also like how even on the lowest difficulty of the easiest route the game is already throwing a boss at you with some annoying skills. Fuga’s motivations may be silly, but at least he leaves us with the memory of a good chapter, some cryptic foreshadowing for the Yato, and a shota wind mage who unfortunately continues in the tradition of Ricken stepping away from their archetypical dynamic after Tellius made it just a little too close to explicitly gay.
Chapter 9
Izana, huh...Izana is...
Let’s talk about Zola!
Zola is one of the rare Fates villains who isn’t (always) exactly what he looks like. On first glance he’s just a typical simpering syncophant with a fitting talent for illusions, but he actually comes with a bit of a character arc in Birthright which I have to say I wasn’t expecting. It was almost as unexpected as Leo’s unexplained appearance at the end of this chapter to kick off said arc by leaving Zola exiled. One big problem I have with Fates is how characters have a tendency to teleport around off-screen as the plot demands it, distance between locations or basic geography be damned, but it’s marginally more forgivable here since Leo is shown later in this route to know how to perform literal teleportation.
I believe this is also one of the only times in Birthright where Hinoka gets to do something that affects the plot, so good on her for acting suspicious of fake!Izana. She’ll go right back to being overshadowed by her brothers - including being overshadowed at being overshadowed - soon enough.
Izumo’s role as the designated neutral nation is delved into more thoroughly in Conquest, weirdly enough. Here Corrin and co. get left only with a vague directive to head toward the Bottomless Canyon and some of Azura’s song lyrics. That’s kind of a good thing, because I’ve got nothing on Izana now. I get that he’s an amusing surprise the first time around, but...who wrote him like that?
Chapter 10
Allow me to divert for a moment from the Takumi angst to pick some very large nits with the geography of this game. In the previous chapter Corrin learned that Ryoma and Takumi had been pushed to the Bottomless Canyon, which is nowhere near their location - but hold onto that thought. The canyon is clearly northwest of Izumo, yet the party goes south to Mokushu allegedly in an effort to reach them there. Fates has a bad time in general with giving a good impression of where its events are taking place, partly because the scale of the map is odd and not helped by it being a topographic rather than a political map like in every other FE, partly because there are times like this where the information presented appears to be simply wrong. What’s worse, the major plot development surrounding Takumi’s possession in Birthright does not, at least so far as I recall, necessitate that he have been possessed by Anankos or anyone else connected to the Bottomless Canyon. I’ll certainly be revisiting this when the time comes.
But...whatever. In spite of everyone getting lost except Ryoma (because of course) this is actually a good chapter, with a cramped map filled with environmental hazards to add challenge. The treachery of Mokushu spans all three routes and is one of those set pieces that benefits from development in each of them. Kotaro’s connection to the, er, Christmas ninjas (and elsewhere, Shura) isn’t developed here unless you choose to have them engage him in combat, but that just saves stuff for the other routes.
Chapter 11
Pictured: easily one of the most forgettable playable characters in this game. It’s a shame too, because she’s the only default kinshi knight and her bits of dialogue and few supports offer hints of an interesting backstory that would speak to gender roles in Hoshido. Alas, she’s merely a Corrinsexual.
This chapter itself is filler, but mechanically it’s good filler. Your new OP archer royal gets plenty of targets for his bow, there are some promoted generics to spice things up, and the Dragon Veins can either help or hinder you depending on how you use them. I don’t care for the antagonist fake-out between the opening and closing cutscenes and the chapter proper - where did possessed!Sumeragi the mysterious swordsman go while you were fighting the fliers? - but that’s a minor quibble. Corrin already beat that guy.
A larger problem is with Takumi’s development, or rather lack thereof. As I said last time the events of the opening chapters explain his initial hostility to Corrin (and Azura) quite well, and Mikoto’s death only reinforces that feeling. Why then does that hostility vanish so quickly in Birthright? Just one chapter after recruitment and he’s already turned his characteristic prickliness onto Zola instead, and I don’t recall it appearing much again except in the context of possession. It’s only the route the ends with Takumi as the final boss that allows him space for his feelings to develop organically (albeit in a negative direction), possibly because Conquest is the only one in which he’s not beholden to love Corrin like all playable characters in Avatar-centered games.

SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS CHAPTER 12/?
Rating: Mature (For Later Chapters)
Read at Ao3
Start at the Beginning
Cat and Kara go on their first date
Chapter 12 - Once Upon a December
Cat felt slightly ridiculous. She was almost fifty years old, and she felt like a teenager on her fight date. Kara had texted her near the end of the work day, apologizing for missing her that morning and asking if she’d like to go out. Cat had jumped at the chance and was about to get Eve to make reservations when Kara had texted her back saying only ‘I’ll make the arrangements. Expect a late dinner. Dress is formal. I’ll be wearing green.’
She had chosen an electric blue tuxedo with black satin lapels and paired it with black lace pumps with an ankle strap. She’s skipped the tuxedo shirt, opting instead for a simple black silk camisole under it. It wasn’t a look she sported often, because one shouldn’t break out the big guns every day, but she knew it looked good on her, and as silly as it was, given that Kara had seen her at her absolute worst, she wanted to impress, and she knew this outfit would do it. But her hand still shook when she reached for the door knob.
Cat opened the door and felt like the breath was knocked out of her, because breathtaking was the only word for how Kara looked. She was wearing an ankle length sleeveless emerald green gown with a Queen Anne neckline. Her hair was twisted into a fancy up do held in place by green lacquered hair sticks, and even the usual glasses had been replaced with a pair of elegant green cat’s eye half frames.
“Hi,” Kara said as she reached up and adjusted her glasses. Cat felt herself relax as all the awkward charm she loved was reflected in that one simple gesture.
“You look lovely, dear,” Cat asked.
“You look amazing,” Kara said. “I mean, not that you don’t always, but the blue and the black and the shoes and just… wow.”
Cat laughed. “Eloquent, as always,” she said, feeling a tiny blush touch her cheeks at the open admiration from Kara.
Cat saw the decision in Kara’s eyes, and felt a slight shudder run through her as Kara’s hands came to set on her hips. She tilted her head back in anticipation as Kara stepped closer, and closed her eyes, moaning softly as Kara leaned down and kissed her. The kiss was soft and slow, and she parted her lips, welcoming Kara into her mouth when she felt the touch of Kara’s tongue on her lips. The kissed seemed to last forever, which meant it was far too short, but Cat pulled away when she found herself toying with the pull of Kara’s zipper, and knew she was going to unwrap her like an overdue Christmas present if she didn’t step away for a moment.
Her willpower was sorely tested just a moment later when she opened her eyes and found herself staring into the vivid blue of Kara’s gaze, but she used the same iron will that had built and empire to keep from leaning forward and kissing Kara again.
“Isn’t that supposed to come at the end of the date?” Cat teased.
“You know me,” Kara said. “No patience when I see something that looks good enough to eat.”
“Oh,” Cat said, “someone’s feeling brave.”
“I think it’s the company,” Kara said, grinning. “Knowing the most beautiful woman in the city has a crush on you is a huge confidence booster.”
“Darling, please,” Cat said. “I’m Cat Grant. I don’t have crushes. I do, however, from time to time fall madly in love with absolutely extraordinary women who take my breath away the moment I meet them.”
“Oh,” Kara said. “How often does this happen?”
“So far, only twice,” Cat said. “So, you might have a bit of competition around my eightieth birthday.”
“I’m not worried,” Kara said. “I can take her.”
“I’ll bet you can,” Cat replied. “So, as nice as this is, I hope you didn’t have me get dressed up just to make out in the doorway all night.”
“No,” Kara said. “That part was just me realizing I’m allowed to kiss you whenever I want now.”
“Well, maybe not during board meetings,” Cat said.
“Not even if they are really boring?” Kara asked.
“That would be all of them, Darling,” Cat said.
“Good point.” Kara gave a dramatic sigh. “I guess we should actually leave the building. After all, the tickets were had to come by.”
“Tickets?” Cat said. “You’re not dragging me to a Disney movie, are you?”
“No,” Kara said seriously. “Disney movies are strictly third date material.”
Cat glared, but Kara just grinned back at her.
***
Cat sat next to Kara, riding in companionable silence in the back of the limo. Cat has asked where they were headed, but Kara would only say that she wanted it to be a surprise. Normally, she would have badgered a date until she got an answer, but Kara had just given her the sad puppy dog eyes, and Cat had folded like a cheap suit, and taken Kara’s hand, holding it and soaking in the contact.
There was so much she wanted to talk to Kara about, so many questions she wanted to ask, but for the first time ever, she felt like she had time. Before Kara, even her best relationships had always felt like they were on a ticking clock. If she was honest, it was almost a relief. Lois was the only person before Kara she’d actually wanted a forever with, but it had never felt like it was in reach. With Kara, it felt like it was. It wasn’t that she wasn’t afraid, she knew she was terrible at relationships, it was just that she felt hope. Kara had already seen her at her worst, and by some miracle, was still there, and maybe, just maybe, she always would be.
“We’re here,” Kara whispered as the limo pulled over and came to a stop.
“Mmmm…” Cat said. “Ready to tell me what you’ve got planned?”
Kara shook her head. “You’ll find out in a second anyway.”
One of the attendants opened the door, and Kara let go of her hand long enough to climb out of the Limo, then offered Cat her hand. Cat took it, letting Kara help her to her feet. She glanced up, smiling as she realized they were outside of the Swan Theatre. Then she saw the poster for the show in the “Now Playing” display.
“I thought you said Disney movies were strictly third date material,” Cat teased.
“Anastasia was Fox Animation,” Kara said, grinning, “And this isn’t the movie.”
“Oh,” Cat said. “I stand corrected.” She smiled at Kara as Kara lead her towards the entrance to the Theatre, but the smile faded almost immediately as a thought occurred to her. “Kara, darling, I appreciate the thought, but do you know what this show is about?”
Kara turned to her, as the fondness she saw reflected in those gorgeous blue eyes made her heart melt all over again.
“Yes,” Kara said, “but thank you for asking.” Kara leaned over, kissing her softly on the cheek. “Thank you for taking care of me,” she whispered after the kiss.
Cat just squeezed her hand in reply.
Normally, Cat liked to be in control, but she let Kara lead them, first to the merchandise table to get the collector’s program, then to the obligatory stop at candy counter, where they got a small bag of M&M’s for Cat, and two bags of Reese’s Pieces for Kara before heading in to the theater. The seats were excellent, eighth row orchestra center, and Kara had timed their arrival perfectly.
“I didn’t realize there was a tour of this show,” Cat said as they settled in. The show had only been open on Broadway a few months, and it normally took a year or more before the shows started touring.
“There’s not,” Kara said. “This is something special.”
Cat raised an eyebrow, and started to reach for her program, but before she could, the lights when down. Kara took her hand, giving it a small squeeze as they settled in to watch the show.
It only took a few minutes to figure out what Kara meant about the show being special. She wasn’t the biggest fan of pop culture, but she remembered enough of the movie, which had been a favorite of Carter’s as a child, to recognize that Dimitri had been replaced in the performance by Dimitria. There was a small scene where she and her partner Vlad argued over whether Dimitria should pretend to be Anastasia, but it was decided she didn’t look enough like the missing little girl to pull it off.
The story moved on, moving quickly from number to number. During the second song, Cat felt Kara shift slightly. It wasn’t much, but Cat glanced over, and caught the glistening of tears on Kara’s face. She let go of Kara’s hand and slipped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close, and holding her. Kara leaned into her, and they stayed that way right as they watched Dimitria and Anya prepare for and then travel to Paris, while slowly falling in love. Cat only let go after Anya had finished singing her way through working up her courage to confront her past and the curtain fell, signaling intermission.
Cat took the lead once the lights came up, guiding Kara to the restroom.
“Are you okay?” Cat asked.
Kara nodded as she washed her face. “I am,” she said as she started washing her face. “I know it might not look like it, but I’m enjoying the show.”
If it were anyone else, Cat wasn’t sure she would believe them, but she could always tell when Kara was lying, and she wasn’t, so Cat just rested a hand in the small of Kara’s back, and rubbed gently as Kara washed her face and reapplied her makeup.
***
Cat held Kara as they watched the second act, rubbing her shoulder softly through Once Upon a December, and smiling at the grin on Kara’s face when Anya and Dimitria finally kiss at the end. There was another brief stop in the bathroom to freshen up Kara’s makeup a second time before they left the theater and headed to dinner at a small, elegant Asian Mexican fusion restaurant Cat had never heard of called el Buda.
By the time they arrived at the restaurant, Kara was back in her Supergirl mode, leading the way to a private dining room, bathed in candlelight.
“I’m almost afraid to ask how you arranged all this on such short notice,” Cat said as soon as the sommelier had left them to fetch a bottle of wine.
“What kind of supportive sister would I be if I didn’t have every gay cultural even in national city for the next five years memorizes, along with details on who to contact to get tickets incase my sister needed a place to take a date on a moment’s notice?” Kara asked, preening just a little.
“A normal one,” Cat said. “But normal has never been your style, has it?”
Kara blushed slightly and dipped her head. “I wish it was, sometimes. Not so much, since Supergirl, but even back on Krypton, I used to dream of being normal.”
“Being exceptional is hard,” Cat said, reaching out and taking Kara’s hand again.
“I don’t want to sound like I’m whining,” Kara said, “I had so much. A family that loved me, anything I needed. Wealth, power, access to anything. But it was lonely, sometimes.”
“Tell, me?”
“I was gifted. I moved through the learning courses quickly, and even on the advanced work, I always achieved top marks. I was the youngest person in the history of the Science Guild to be offered full membership. I spent more time around adults than I did people my own age. I didn’t have any friends on Krypton, except for my aunt Astra. Then, she was gone, and the Council was angry with Jor-El, and no one wanted anything to do with us, towards the end.”
“Sometimes, I feel guilty,” Kara said. “When I got to Earth, Eliza and Jeremiah were so scared I’d draw attention, that it gave me an excuse to hide what I could do. I kept my grades up, but I didn’t do anything extra. I focused on trying to make friends, which I was actually terrible at.”
“Well, you’ve come a long way in that department,” Cat said.
Kara smiled. “That was all Alex,” Kara said. “Towards the end of high school, we were both outcasts, but we had each other, and she taught me so much. When we went to college, I started doing better, making friends. It was still hard, because I had to hide so much, but I was happier.”
“You did better than I did,” Cat said. “I’ve never been good at making friends. I think Oliva’s my friend despite any efforts I might have made, not because of them. And Lois…” Cat shrugged. “We’re friends, because when you’ve cared that much about someone, you’re only options are to keep caring, or hate them. And appearances to the contrary, I could never hate Lois.”
Kara started to say something but stopped and glanced towards the door. A moment later, the waiter entered, carrying the bottle Cat had selected. They took a moment to order. Cat order for the seared tuna appetizer and a kale wasabi chicken fajita Caesar salad, while Kara ordered the family sized pots stickers appetizer, the Peking Duck chimichanga, and the chicken massaman chalupas. The waiter disappeared, and Cat turned back to Kara.
“I want the whole story on Lois at some point,” Kara said.
“I’ll need a fresh bottle of Scotch for that,” Cat said. “What made you chose that show?”
“Other than the obvious?” Kara said.
“I expected a dinner date. Maybe a flight around the city.”
“Did you enjoy it?” Kara asked nervously.
“I did,” Cat assured her. “It was wonderful.”
Kara smiled. “I love the story,” she said. “When I got here, I watched a lot of TV. It helped with my English. Eliza and Jeremiah still had the VCR hooked up. They’d updated most of their collection to DVD by that point, but one weekend I found all of Alex’s old VHS tapes. The entire Disney library, along with a bunch of others. I think Anastasia was the first movie I ever loved.”
“I think I scared Eliza with it. When I first found it, I just sat and watched it over and over again, the whole day. I think I cried the whole time. She tried to get me to turn it off. Jeremiah too. I think that’s the first time Alex did anything nice for me. She convinced them to back off. I don’t know if she ever realized I heard her telling them to leave me alone.”
Cat could see it. Of course the story would appeal. A young girl who’d watched her family die, a chance at a reunion with a loved one. She could imagine the catharsis.
“I feel like I should apologize though,” Kara said. “I didn’t expect to cry through the whole show. It’s been years since I did that.”
“You don’t need to apologize,” Cat said. “I’m honored that you felt like you could share something so personal with me.”
Kara lifted Cat’s hand to her mouth, kissing the back of it. “I want to share everything with you,” she said, “but it seemed especially appropriate tonight, because I finally understand the ending.”
“What do you mean?” Cat asked.
“I mean, as much as I loved the story, I could never understand why Anya didn’t stay with her grandmother at the end. I would have given anything to have my family back. Even later, as much as I came to love Alex and Eliza and Jeremiah, the idea of having anyone from Krypton back in my life was powerful, and I couldn’t imagine a reason I would give it up. Not until I heard you say you love me.”
“But making the choice she did… It was about moving on. Not living in the past. If she’d stayed with her grandmother, the past would always define her. Going with Dimitri gave her the chance to be free of that. She was choosing to become her own person. Something she wouldn’t be if she’d stayed.”
“I love Alex, Eliza and J’onn, but all of them, but they forget who I am sometimes. I know they’re trying to protect me, but they treat me like I’m this fragile thing, and I love that you don’t. You take care of me, and you give me space to grieve, and to be broken when I need to be, but it never seems to make me less to you. I know it scares you when I go out there. I can see it on your face, hear it in the way your heart beat changes, but you tell me to go instead of arguing.”
“You said you didn’t know what I would want from you, but that’s it. You love me, but more than anything else, you respect me enough to treat me like an adult. You might argue with me if you think I’m wrong, might try to change my mind, but you always allow me the dignity of my choices. You let me choose who I want to be, and that’s something I never had before, even on Krypton.”
Cat tried to say something but found it difficult to speak past the lump in her throat. She took a moment, letting her emotions settle, before she spoke. “Look at that,” she said. “Leaving me speechless twice in as many days.” She pulled her hand back, drawing Kara’s across the table so she could hold it in both of hers as she brushed a kiss over Kara’s knuckles. “I know everyone asks so much of you, and I don’t ever want to add to that. You carry so much. All I ask is that you always try to come back to me. I like who I am when you’re in my life.”
Kara smiled at her, and if both of them had eyes that were a little watery, neither of them were going to point it out. “I promise I will always try, Cat,” Kara said, and really, that’s all Cat could ask for.

Happy Thanksgiving! I was hoping to have this out sooner but this day can get busy. But I wanted to post a story about this holiday and unfortunately, this went into a different direction and I allow it to lol. I just want to say I am so thankful for this little escape and the fact that life can get stressful and no one gives up on my stories means so much to me! That something I saw as a dream, writing fanfic for my favorite couple, actually became a reality is so amazing and I thank each and every person who follows me. Whether you know it or not, I appreciate you all so much! Enjoy! And I will be getting to some stories over the weekend I promise.
----------------------
“Sylvie?” Antonio called out as he entered the house with bags in his arms.
“In the kitchen!” Sylvie replied as she closed the oven door. She finally finished getting the turkey prepped and put it in the oven.
Antonio walked in the kitchen and placed the bags down on the kitchen counter. He started emptying the bags and putting away the groceries. “You look stressed out.” He observed.
“I am.” She sighed. “And tired.”
“Mhm.” He replied as he looked around the kitchen. He was so busy with the bags he didn’t notice that a certain little girl wasn’t at his feet. “Where’s Julie?” He asked as he looked over at his wife.
“Thankfully, she’s sleeping.” She smiled softly as she walked over and helped Antonio with the groceries. “Thank you for going to the store for this. You’re the best.”
“I am.” He grinned at her. “But I also didn’t feel like I had a choice.” He pointed out. “You can get scary with the holidays.”
She nodded her head. “I know, I’m sorry. It’s just---I always enjoyed the holidays when I was younger. Thanksgiving, Christmas, basically every holiday that can be celebrate, I celebrated. And I just want Julie to have that experience.” She shrugged her shoulders. “It sounds silly, I know.”
He shook his head. “No, it doesn’t. I know how hard it is for you to be away from your parents, it’s even harder on the holidays.”
She nodded her head. “Now, I have my own family so it isn’t nearly as hard.” She never regretted moving to Chicago; she loved it here so much. But that didn’t stop her from missing her parents and her siblings.
“And sadly, our daughter likes waking us up at the crack of dawn on the holidays.” He said with a chuckle.
“I know.” She sighed. “I’m so tired. But at least she’s sleeping now so I can get dressed and start on the rest of the food since I won’t have to run after a little girl.” She said as she walked over to the oven and opened it to check on the turkey. She closed the door after a few seconds. “I think I have enough time to take a quick shower and get dressed before Julie will wake up.”
Antonio smiled as he walked over to Sylvie and wrapped his arms around her from behind. “I think the shower can wait.” He leaned down and kissed her neck.
“Antonio, stop!” She said, although she didn’t really want him to stop. Between having a two year little girl, and their work schedules, they didn’t have much alone time. Sylvie was always so exhausted by the time he got home, and his days off never matched up with hers. She missed her husband, but right now she was hoping he was stronger than her.
He pulled away slightly, but she could still feel his hot breath on her neck. “Do you want me to stop?” He asked, knowing she didn’t.
“No.” She admitted weakly. She could never resist him, even when she was angry with him. “But we have such a busy day ahead of us.”
“I know.” He agree, his arms still around her waist. He spun her around to face him as he looked into her eyes. “I just miss my wife.”
“I miss you too, baby. I do.” She said as she placed her hand on his face. She stroked his cheek with her thumb. “Julie will go to bed early tonight and we can have the whole night just for ourselves. How does that sound?”
“Perfect.” Antonio smiled softly as he leaned forward and kissed her softly. He deepened the kiss as he pulled her closer to him.
They were interrupted as they heard little footsteps coming down the stairs. Antonio pulled away from the kiss as he heard Julie running into the kitchen.
“Daddy!” Julie exclaimed as she ran over to Antonio.
He smiled softly as he lifted her in his arms. “Hi, sweetie.” He leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “How was your nap?”
“It was good.” Julie smiled as she laid her head down on his chest. He could tell that she was still sleepy.
“Well, now that she’s awake, can you dress her for me?” She asked Antonio. “I still need to take a shower and hopefully put out the appetizers before people start arriving.”
He nodded his head. “Of course.” He wasn’t sure why she was asking knowing that Antonio loved spending time with his daughter. “Who is coming?” He asked.
“Um.” Sylvie thought as she walked out of the kitchen with Antonio following behind her. “I wanted to invite the whole firehouse over.”
Antonio stopped walking, thinking what his wife was capable of during the holidays. “Sylvie, you didn’t.”
She shook her head. “No. I didn’t want to put the extra pressure on me because I knew that meant extra pressure on you and I know how lucky we both are to have the entire day off.”
He nodded his head as he began following Sylvie once again. “So, who did you invite?”
“The kids of course.” She said referring to Diego and Eva. “I didn’t think it would have been much of a family holiday if all the kids weren’t here with us.” She pointed out, knowing that Antonio wanted all his kids with him. “I invited your parents but your mother had plans already and your father---well he said he was busy too.” She was sure he was busy with something other than eating but of course she wasn’t going to get in his business and ask what he was doing. “Gabby and Matt is coming so they’re going to pick up Eva and Diego and drop them off here.”
Antonio smiled as he walked upstairs and walked into their bedroom. “You’re amazing.” He wanted the kids here but figured if they wanted to come, they would have called him. “Do you want me to give her a bath?” He asked softly.
She shook her head. “No, no. I gave her a bath last night since she likes playing in the bath, I figured we wouldn’t have time for that today.” Julie wouldn’t let them give her a quick bath and would want to play until she was ready to get out. “But her outfit is in her room on the nightstand.”
He nodded his head. “Please tell me you don’t want to put her in a dress.”
“No. She’s 2 years old and with the food, she would just ruin any dress that she wears.” She pointed out.
“Okay. I’ll go dress her now and I’ll see you downstairs.”
-----------
A few hours later, Sylvie was beginning to make the sides since the Turkey was almost done. Julie was busy playing with her dolls which made Sylvie feel better.
“Thank you.” She said to Antonio who was helping her. “I don’t think many husbands would do what you have done today.” She smiled softly, knowing that she was lucky and it was a thought that crossed her mind every day.
He looked over at Sylvie with a puzzled look. “Not many husbands support their wives?” He asked. “I just want you to be happy and I don’t think I can accomplished that by saying no or being rude.”
She laughed. “I don’t think it would have been rude.” She shrugged her shoulders. “Some people don’t like holidays and that’s okay.”
He nodded his head. “Like they say ‘happy wife, happy life.’ Besides, I have a selfish motive behind the things I’m doing.”
Sylvie smiled, wondering what that was. “Hmm? What is it?” She asked, curious.
“Okay the things I did earlier wasn’t a selfish motive because you know anything you ask me to do, I’d do it.” He said referring to when she asked him to go to the store and then helping her with Julie. Although she never had to ask him to do anything for Julie because he’d always do it. “But now helping with the sides, well, I get to spend time with you and you know I’d always jump at any chance to spend time with my wife.”
“I wonder If you’d still feel that way when we have been married for longer than 10 years.” She said, always loving talking about their future.
“Absolutely.” He agreed.
Sylvie laughed. “You answered that fast.” She said and she leaned against the counter as the food cooked as she arched her eyebrows. “So, either you felt like that was a trap or--” She trailed off.
“What?” He laughed. “You know me, I’d say whatever I feel is true, regardless if that would upset you or not.” He pointed out.
“True.” She said, thinking about some of their fights in the past.
Antonio stepped away from the kitchen table and walked over to Sylvie. “Do you think ten years from now, I’d make up any excuse to not want to spend time with you?”
“I mean, our marriage is still fairly new.” She pointed out.
“A lot of things may change in our marriage. For one, our little girl will be older, a lot older.” He sighed, thinking about that. “And many other things probably. It’s life, it happens. But one thing that won’t is using every opportunity to spend time with my wife.”
“How can you be sure?” She said, challenging him.
“Because baby, you aren’t just my wife but my best friend.”
Sylvie’s smile grew wider as she heard Antonio’s confession. Their eyes were locked on each other’s but no words could come out of her mouth right now.
Before she could say anything, the door opened and she heard Gabby’s voice calling for them. It was loud enough to break the spell between them right now.
Sylvie smiled at Antonio and then she walked in the living room, Antonio following her.
“Hey guys. Happy Thanksgiving!” Sylvie said giving Gabby, Matt, Diego and Eva a hug.
“It smells great in here.” Matt said.
“Evie!” Julie was upstairs in her room when she heard the noise coming downstairs. As she rushed downstairs, Antonio told her to be careful. The last thing he wanted was for Julie to miss a step and fall downstairs.
Julie ran over to Eva and gave her a hug. And then did the same thing to Diego. She loved her siblings and it always gave Antonio a happy feeling knowing how close his kids were.
As Julie was done saying her hellos to her siblings, Antonio knew it was his turn and he have Diego a hug and gave a hug to Eva and kissed her cheek. “Glad you guys could make it.”
Eva shrugged her shoulders. “Mom is busy so I’m glad you guys were cooking dinner.”
As Eva explained this, Antonio shot a glance over at Sylvie who simply just shrugged her shoulders. “Dinner should be done soon.” She looked over at Gabby. “Do you want to finish helping me so I can let Antonio rest for a while?”
She nodded her head. “Of course.”
Sylvie smiled at Gabby and then walked in the kitchen. Matt looked over at Antonio. “Let’s go watch the game!” He said as they walked over to the couch and sat down. “I’m gonna assume you didn’t watch any games today so let me fill you in.” He said as he began filling Antonio on the few games he missed.
Eva and Diego were just excited to spend time with Julie so they went upstairs and played with her until dinner was done.
-----
As Gabby and Sylvie was sitting up the table for dinner, Gabby looked over at Sylvie. “Are things okay with you and Antonio?”
Sylvie nodded her head slowly, confused by this question. “Yes. We’re great.” She said, wondering where Gabby was going with this.
“You guys shared a look that looked intense. I wasn’t sure what it meant.” She explained.
“Oh no, we’re great. He’s been great today. He helped me with everything today, so that looked had nothing to do with us.”
“And everything to do with Laura?” She asked.
She nodded her head. “I think it just bothers him that we’re always including the kids with everything in our lives which can be hard with a two year old. And Laura can’t even take care of them when it’s just her and her boyfriend.” She took a deep breath. “We have been talking a lot about moving the kids in here. I support him with whatever decision he decides. The kids already have their own room so it isn’t like we don’t have enough room for them.”
“But he doesn’t want to deal with Laura?” Gabby finished for her.
“Yeah. I think he feels like she may act like mom of the year if he tries that.” She sighed. “Like I said, I will support Antonio with anything, but if she tries to downplay our marriage like we only got married because I got pregnant, I may hurt her then.” Sylvie didn’t like fighting, it was the reason why she stayed silent with Laura because she can say what she wants, but when it came to her family, she was proud of it and no one was going to make her feel differently.
“It’s a messy situation.”
“It certainly is.” She agreed. “But I don’t want to think about it right now, I want to have a great thanksgiving with the people I love.”
“And we will.” Gabby said with a smile. “You did this, all of this, so be happy.”
After they were finished setting the table, they told everyone dinner was done.
One by one they entered the dining room and started sitting at the table. Sylvie smiled widely as she watched Antonio walked in the room with Julie in his arms.
Sylvie pulled up her highchair next to where Sylvie and Antonio were seated, and then Antonio placed Julie in the highchair.
-------
After everyone was done eating, they all stood up from their seats and walked out of the dining room.
Sylvie stood up and lifted Julie out of her seat. She was covered in food and was a mess. “Thankfully I listened to my gut.”
Antonio chucked. “Here, let me clean her up. It’s your turn to relax.”
As Sylvie handed Julie to him, she looked down at the table. “I still have to clean this mess. I’ll do it when everyone leaves.”
He shook his head. “No, babe. I got it. You did more than enough today.“
As they walked out of the dining room, Sylvie looked over at Antonio and smiled. “Thank you.”
Antonio walked upstairs to clean up Julie as Sylvie walked over to the couch and sat down next to Gabby.
“So, when are you planning your next baby?” Gabby asked.
“No, no. We’re done.” She promised. “Our hearts are filled enough.” She said looking over at Eva and Diego. Her biggest worry was making them think they weren’t included on their family when they were. She looked back at Gabby. “I think the real question is, when are you guys gonna start?” She fired the question back at her.
“Soon. Just waiting for the right timing.” Matt answered the question for them.
“I know Julie may have been a surprise, a great surprise, but if me and Antonio would have waited for the ‘right timing’, trust me, I wouldn’t be a mom right now. There is never the perfect time to have a baby. You just do it and everything else will fall into place.”
“So, you don’t ever wish you could have waited?” Gabby asked.
“No way.” Sylvie answered honestly. “My little girl is perfect. Besides, she made us realize how much we truly love each other. And if anything, she made us fall in love with each other even more.” Sylvie shook her head, realizing she was making it sound like it was perfect. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard with our jobs, and I suffer from working mom guilt so much. But it’s never a regret and always worth it.”
Gabby nodded her head, taking in everything Sylvie was saying. “Maybe soon we’ll get lucky too.”
“You will.” Sylvie promised as she grabbed her hand and squeezed it. She knew it was more than just their jobs, but also with the fact that they lost two kids. But she knew if anyone deserved to have a kid more than she and Antonio did, it was them.
Sylvie turned her attention to Eva and Diego. “Do you guys want to spend the night?” She asked.
Eva shook her head no. “We would love to, but we have to get home.”
Sylvie nodded her head, knowing it was because of Laura. “Of course. Another night then.”
Antonio came down a few seconds later with Julie in her pajamas. “One clean sleepy little girl who wants her mommy.” He handed her to Sylvie who took her happily.
Julie laid her head on Sylvie as she grabbed on her hair.
“Well, we should get going, I think the little angel needs her rest.” Gabby said as she stood up. “I can stay while Matt drops off the kids to help you clean up.”
Antonio shook his head. “No, it’s fine. Sylvie is relaxing for the rest of the night while I clean up so it’s okay. You go home and relax too.”
“Are you sure, man?” Matt asked. “We all ate too.”
“It’s fine. I don’t want to bring them home late.” With the way things were with Laura right now, he didn’t want to give her a reason to get mad right now.
As they said their goodbyes, they headed out of the door as Antonio kissed the kids goodbye. Before Gabby walked out of the house, he grabbed her arm gently.
“What’s up?” She asked her brother.
“Thank you for bringing them. It means a lot to us.”
“No problem.” She smiled softly. “Just fix this mess with the kids so they can stay here where they belong.”
“Gabby.” Antonio warned.
“I know, I know. It isn’t that easy.” Gabby sighed. “We’ll talk about this later when we have more time. Love you.” She leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
“Love you too.”
As he watched Gabby get in the car safety, he closed the door behind them.
“Now it’s just us.” He heard Sylvie say to him. “I think the mess can wait, come over here.”
Antonio smiled and he walked over to Sylvie. He sat down next to her and he wrapped his arm around her.
“We love you.” He heard Sylvie whispered.
Antonio looked down at Sylvie and Julie and he smiled. “I love you both too.”
“Promise me something?”
“Hmm?” Antonio said as he relaxed, being close to his family made him relax. It was the only thing that did.
“That we won’t go to work tomorrow and we can stay in bed with our perfect little girl and have a family day in?” She asked.
“Promise.” He leaned down and kissed her head. “I think that sounds perfect.”

Thoughts on Star Trek Discovery after 5 episodes
(Spoilers for Discovery S01E05 and Orville S01E06)
Episode 5 of Star Trek Discovery aired last night in Canada (up here the network Space airs it, so we don’t need to rely on streaming to view it). “Choose Your Pain” was its title and it’s ironic that it aired a few days after The Orville’s surprisingly hard-hitting “Krill” because it actually allows for something very close to an apples-to-apples comparison.
I’m going to go into spoilers, plus this will be a very long post (apologies; this is Exhibit A to show why I’m not on Twitter), so I’ll put a break here. The tl;dr is that, although I’m still willing to give it a chance, I’m still not “feeling” Discovery, which after 5 episodes is a concern; whereas, I find The Orville not only captures the classic spirit of Trek better, it managed in one single episode to make its Klingon analogue more interesting than the real Klingons in their current incarnation.
Before I begin, I wanted to set the scene to explain where I’m coming from. There is a lot of Discovery-bashing going on, and I don’t support that and this essay isn’t intended to be a bash. Although I am very critical of the show and not 100% certain that I’m going to stick with it much longer (though I’ll probably stick with it till its midseason break, at least), it’s not my intent to become a basher because then I’d be a hypocrite. I was a defender of Star Trek Enterprise throughout its entire run, and was upset to see it bashed mercilessly, to the point where I divorced myself from Star Trek and Star Trek fandom after it ended in 2005. Fortunately, Doctor Who had just come back on TV so I switched my allegiances to Who (which I’d been a fan of since the early 80s, but it became more intense). Fast-forward to 2017, and due to a mix of disappointment over what the series has delivered since Christmas 2015, combined with decisions regarding the show moving forward, I'm now divorcing from Doctor Who (as anyone who follows my blog knows). So with Star Trek back on TV the opportunity to move my allegiances back to Trek exists ... but Discovery isn’t doing it for me. Not yet. Instead, The Orville, Seth MacFarlane’s underrated (in more ways than one) homage is the show that is earning my affection. I know I’m not alone in that.
But here’s the thing, and why I don’t really see the need to “bash” Discovery: because The Orville is so much like “proper” Star Trek - the optimism, the crew-as-family dynamic, the introspective and “ripped from the headlines”-inspired stories, and general sense of fun - this actually allows Discovery to seek its own path (even if that means delivering “improper” Trek), allowing both shows to co-exist (which they could regardless - it’s not as if they’re in direct competition).
But Discovery has problems. Before I get into that, though, some positive thoughts.
This week’s episode introduced Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd, a character immortalized by Roger C. Carmel in the original series. And I thought he did a good job. I don’t have the same issues with recasting characters as some others do (I liked the guy they had playing Sarek earlier, too). My only complaint is they made him darker than Carmel’s version, which felt a bit inconsistent. But then again this is 10 years before Kirk encountered him and people change (it could be argued that Carmel’s version is more insane than Wilson’s, and maybe we’re seeing why in Discovery). I loved the reference to Stella, his wife, which was a great call-forward to the TOS episode “I, Mudd”. Trivia: Carmel was supposed to reprise Mudd for an episode of TNG, but the actor died before it was filmed; I believe some aspects of what was planned for Mudd - including a scene where he was supposed to actually pay tribute to his frenemy, Captain Kirk - were later reused when they brought Scotty forward into the TNG era in “Relics”. So having Mudd appear in a modern-day Trek is an idea that’s been kicking around for 30 years.
Obviously, Mudd will be back and I’m looking forward to it. I’d rather he be the recurring baddie than the new Klingons. More on that in a moment.
I also liked the on-screen reference to Jonathan Archer, Christopher Pike and Robert April early in the episode. Robert April was established in the animated series as the very first captain of the Enterprise, predating Pike. Since TAS is not considered canon (or at least it wasn’t considered canon during the pre-2005 era; it might have changed since), this is the first “canonical” acknowledgement of April in live action. I appreciated that.
I also liked Capt. Lorca in this episode. After two weeks of being just “there”, Lorca came into his own with this episode. And his backstory is interesting.
But I have criticisms of this episode, and of the show itself as we hit week 5. Starting with a minor point, after four weeks of keeping a lid on language, the swearing in this episode was awkward and clearly put in there “because we can” - there was nothing charming or cool about the first use of the F-word (twice in the same scene, yet) in the Trek franchise. I’m not one to go “oooh, swearing, bad” (The Thick of It is one of my favourite TV shows, for god’s sake), but there’s a time and place, and it just didn’t work - it came across as vulgar and awkward. If they’re going to have people swear in Discovery, fine, but don’t make it feel like “hey, we can swear now!” Torchwood ran into this same issue - and the swearing during Series 1 felt unnatural as a result. If they want Lorca and his crew to turn the air blue, they should get Armando Iannucci in to show them how it’s done.
What will be the deal-breaker for me is if this show continues to be populated with characters I don’t give a damn about. I like Michael (who was for the first time not the focus of an episode) and Lorca has potential - all the characters have potential - but 5 weeks in they should be further along than they are in terms of establishing them, even taking into account the two-episode prologue and the fact a core character only debuted this week.
Five weeks in, and without cheating online, I still don't remember the names of most of the main characters because they’ve made so little impression on me. Michael is fine, Lorca is fine, and I know the new guy is named Tyler (mainly because I’m curious as to whether he’s related to Jose Tyler of Christopher Pike’s Enterprise in “The Cage”), but the rest - by now they should have made enough of an impression for me to at least remember their names, not just call them “Michael’s roommate”, “the jerk who runs the spore drive and who might or might not be the chief engineer but we can’t tell”, “Odo 2.0”, “the doctor who lives with the spore drive guy and who I thought was the ship’s doctor until he mentioned that he answers to a chief medical officer who we’ve yet to see”, “the incompetent who got herself killed by the spore monster last week in a scene Seth MacFarlane would have rejected as too silly”, “the roboty woman on the bridge who kinda looks like Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “the woman whose head is half shaved”. In fact I think this was the first episode in which those last two individuals were actually identified by names on screen.
By comparison, I had not just the Orville character names but their functions nailed down by Episode 2 of that show. And I had much more invested in them as characters, even early on (and by “Krill” I find I want to know more about what’s happening with Borus and Klyden and their child, Alara’s love life, and whether Ed and Kelly are going to get back together or not). With Discovery it’s almost as if they’re all being set up to be redshirts. (As it is, I really don’t expect to Michael’s roommate - I looked it up; her name is Tilly - to survive the season. Too much telegraphing about her being naive and having dreams for the future.) Maybe they are if the show is taking the Game of Thrones “anyone can die” approach and if there is a reason why we’ve never heard of Spock having an adopted human sister before now.
When I started writing this very long (sorry!) blog entry, I mentioned an apples-to-apples comparison between Discovery and Orville. This week, “Choose Your Pain” and “Krill” both involved captains boarding enemy vessels and learning more about the bad guys. And it really drove home the fact that the new Klingons are rather boring. Never mind the different make-up and all that - I’m sure they’ll come up with a workaround to explain that the same way Enterprise did back in 2005 with the Augments story arc (and I didn’t miss the fact they name-dropped eugenics this week) - they just don’t have the spark of the Klingons of old, or even the Abramsverse versions. Not saying there aren‘t promising signs - I kind of like the fact the show is shipping cult leader Voq with the female officer L’Rell. Every episode so far has included focus on the Klingons. But in only one episode, The Orville managed to develop a very well-rounded picture of the Krill, making them relevant, interesting, sympathetic, and “villains” we want to see more of. The Klingons on Discovery? I want more Harry Mudd, fewer Klingons. Of course, a big difference between Orville and Discovery is the use of humour. Discovery pretty much has none, while Orville is a dramedy. Which was driven home during the climax of the Discovery episode when we were actually treated to an unexpected piece of Orville-like comedy when the female Klingon captain, who has the hots for Tyler. Encountering him trying to escape, she let off with something like “After all we mean to each other, you’re leaving?” (not an exact quote). It was a funny moment, but poorly timed. Seriously, we’re supposed to see her as a threat (and an ongoing one seeing as Lorca doesn’t finish her off as opposed to every other Klingon he encounters), and she spouts dialogue more appropriate for a spoof? Compare to The Orville, which usually knows when to be funny and when not to be. Having Ed Mercer and Gordon Molloy facing the possibility of having to kill a bunch of Krill children in order to save a human colony, and Mercer saying “If we kill those kids ... we have no souls” was a far more hard-hitting and dramatic moment than anything “Choose Your Pain” offered. And once things got serious, they got serious. The ending of “Krill” was chilling as Mercer realized that instead of saving a bunch of kids, he created a bunch of future enemies instead, instantly giving the series a long-term aspect as the potential is there for it to revisit this fact years from now, if it survives that long. The Avis rent-a-car jokes were funny, and the opening sequence where Bortus does his best Matter-Eater Lad impersonation (Google it) was cute, and I loved the gag where Ed starts talking before Alara can open a channel, but it was the serious moments that made “Krill” stand out. The next episode looks serious as well as it casts a long-overdue spotlight on Lt. LaMarr.So to sum up: I’m not ready yet to say “Discovery sucks” as some have. I don’t think it does, despite all I’ve written here. It has issues, yes, but every Trek series has issues and teething pains. I am concerned that the characters aren’t gelling for me and that’s what’s going to make me decide to keep watching in the long term. On the other hand, The Orville is proving to be a great show that also has had its rough patches and its teething pains, but it managed to hit the ground running a lot faster in terms of establishing characters and stories and tone. I am in the market for a sci-fi show to replace Doctor Who, and so far The Orville is winning the battle against Star Trek Discovery. But I’m not willing to write Discovery off ... yet.

he wants to go back to japan
he can’t read or edit and listen to music at the same time! me neither
someone asked what a good pet would be and phil went on a lil tangent about how it’s important to have enough time to take care of the pet you choose!! dont get an exotic pet or a breed of non-exotict pet that requires a lot of time, money, or energy to care for it if you’re not at a point in your life where u can take care of it to the best of your ability! <3
hedgehogs are one of the most common animals in the uk??? what the heck?
he can’t remember whether or not he’s seen a hedgehog irl so he texts mum lester to ask <3 why is this the sweetest thing in the world . like seeing a hedgehog irl would be an experience that his family facilitated or even if he was moved out when it happened it would have been so exciting that he def would have told kath about it. so any way it happened she would know about it. my heart is Warm.
he’s not a huge summer candle burner but as soon as it’s september he’ll be on the pumpkin spice train

rye bread is worse (in phil’s opinion) than regular bread and is ”claggy”. i busted out laughing and texted my mom IMMEDIATELY bca LOOOONG time ago we were at a family christmas party with my dad’s extended family and all of the Adults were playing scrabble. my mom ended up spelling claggy and everyone else was like THATS A MADE UP WORD WHAT THE FUCK!!!! and my mom was like ???? no its not? my dad’s family is from the eastern us and had never heard the word claggy before and i remember my dad giving my mom shit about it for YEARS afterward because she caused such an uproar. idk if it was a regional thing or if americans just don’t say claggy but REGARDLESS. my mom and i had a good laugh over this description of rye bread and we both love phil
he’s nervous abt what dalien is going to look like and become as he grows up. phil’s general reaction to dalien has been one of caution and nervousness and idk ?? someone more thoughtful analyze that please

I'm tone-deaf Had to cover it with autotune Alright, alright! To conclude, Only a life full of negative energy can be a positive energy one. (AC) It shouldn't be too complicated in life Just keep our random life as long as we're alive Don't believe what Chicken Soul says like blah blah blah blah blah Play video games if you like If you want some fruit, go eat it I could eat eight guava in one bite (ACD) Slow down your life a little bit more What should come will come, don't be afraid of it Laziness is not necessarily a bad word sometimes Please stay where it's cool Why always expose yourself to the sun After the youth don't be obsessed with "hard work pays off" such naive lies.

09 The Incorrect Aesthetics (Cindy solo)
(verse) What's real and what's fake What's good and evil, right and wrong, the ugly beauty It's all clear to me
No matter what you think or do or say Deliberately put her down Hurt her too much
You think you see things that others don't You think they're all assholes Why can't you see the problems that were so obvious
(chorus) Stop! Talking that, shutting up. People's preference for things is most easily affected by the frequency of exposure Talking that, shutting up I don't wanna wanna hear ya just Please consciously correct your incorrect aesthetic beauty! beauty! beauty! the incorrect aesthetics
(verse+chorus)
No RIP No RIP Not forgetting the day when I am queen C You know me but I don't know her They all try and diss me But there ain't nothing in it Attention, a new generation of sunshine we created Look, I'm fabulous, I'm fabulous, I'm fabulous
(chorus)
10 A Quadratic Girl (Dora solo)
The sky seems to be flat I've never changed my clothes I am a little girl in a cartoon I'm looking at you across the screen You have the deepest eyes and look silly when you laugh
I want to tell you I kind of like you But once I cross dimensions, I'd become transparent The cartoon always has an ending Then I'll never see you again I'll sing "I love you" at the ending song
I live in a quadratic world Desserts here have very little taste I have never tasted sweetness I want to meet you in reality And feel the temperature of your hand To find out how warmth feels
I want to tell you I kind of like you But once I cross dimensions, I'd become transparent The cartoon always has an ending Then I'll never see you again I'll sing "I love you" at the ending song
I want to tell you I kind of like you But once I cross dimensions, I'd become transparent The cartoon always has an ending Then I'll never see you again I'll sing "I love you" at the ending song
The cartoon always has an ending Then I'll never see you again I'll sing "I love you" at the ending songI want to tell you I kind of like you
