Steven Universe Rewatch: Too Far
This is it. Who could blame viewers for assuming that Amedot was endgame? They literally and exactly do the most clichè beginning of a romance in all of fiction:
Surely there’s some sort of international law that when this happens, you fall in love.
In retrospect, there’s at least one reason this doesn’t work I hadn’t considered: Peridot isn’t a member of the main cast. Amethyst is. If Peridot and Amethyst became an official couple, it would be much harder to justify Peridot being in the show irregularly.
Let’s go!
One of the very rare times we get a precise amount of time. I don’t think this adds much to our timeline, though.
Musicals in media always have a bit of unreality to them. This implies that all the musical numbers in Steven Universe are literally happening, and that they’re happening while we’re not watching. Peridot’s been with the gems for less than a week, and she’s already seen multiple songs!
There’s a plausible theory that cows in this setting are wild. I wish I could remember who suggested it.
If only we could do this with all bigots. Peridot being handled with baby equipment is very cute.
Garnet still has the best lines.
Calling feet “gravity connectors” is very good in a way I can’t really describe. It approaches the idea of standing opposite the way humans think about it. We use our legs to repel, not connect. And the nature of gravity means that we don’t need dedicated connectors, no matter our body configuration, some part of us will touch the ground.
Amedot’s chaotic energy and Peridot’s anger at the world failing to meet her standards makes for a great dynamic.
I like that she tries to understand “nerd” in the nerdiest way imaginable.
It’s only at this point that I realized that Amethyst is a jock. She’s not a typical jock, which is what tricked me, but she has the essential jock elements. She is, essentially, a physical person.
Making the analogy of bigotry against fusion as bigotry against LGBT+ people almost overt.
Amethyst has always been insecure about where she came from and what she is. This sort of confirmation of her worst doubts is exactly the wrong thing to say. Of course, Peridot has no reason to think that.
Peridot doesn’t do any of this out of malice. I don’t think she has any malice in her. Come to think of it, the show doesn’t really let anyone have malice for its own sake.
At this point I don’t think we know that Jasper is the same “breed” as Amethyst. I guess if you were a gem nerd, or did a web search, you’d be able to see that they’re both quartz type gems in real life.
I forgot this was a term in the show, not just something fans said. Did someone tell Peridot about genetics and she made up a very good pun, or is it coincidentally a word that gem society already used?
Peridot is essentially a child here. She learned that pointing out peoples’ “flaws” got her new friends to laugh, so she does it without any sort of tact or concern for their feelings. It’s a good lesson for people to learn.
Exactly the way a little kid approaches jokes. They know you say something weird, then everyone laughs.
That’s the one thing you’ll never be. Sorry.
This is so cute.
I like this lesson. Peridot doesn’t get how emotions work, so they can use it as a backdoor to help the viewer get to grips with their own emotional perception.
The frame that launched a thousand ships.
Peridot using her tape recorder to apologize to Amethyst is really cool. It’s always good when a scene uses something particular to a character to give it a unique twist. It also models using alternate ways of communication for people with difficulty expression their emotions.
I’ll be honest, despite everything, it still annoys me they didn’t end up together. This is so cute!
Great work taking complicated emotional issues and boiling them down to a single word.
What is there to say about Amedot that hasn’t already been said? They’re a great couple. They have a really fun dynamic. They work together in a way that complements both of their personalities that makes both of them work better. Their relationship is like a fusion: They both become something more when the other is there. Peridot loosens up and has fun, Amethyst is made a little more careful and ordered. Steven brings Peridot into the team, but it’s Amethyst that brings Peridot into society.
The thing with all ships is: none of it is real anyway, you can just imagine it’s the way you prefer. I just wish we had more scenes of them together.
Maybe I’ll just read some... *shudder* fanfic.

Of course my shipping heart breaks a bit that Peridot is confirmed Aro/Ace. I loved Amedot so much, but if you seriously think I wouldn't drop the ship immediately and would rather invalidate a character's canon identity for my own selfish wants, you got another thing coming.
If Peridot is truly canonically aromantic, which I've seen some debate around if Maya can make that call or not (but I still think this is a relevant conversation to have within the fandom), you have to recognize that putting her in explicitly romantic relationships is the same thing as shipping a lesbian with a male character. Obviously I have NO ill will towards those who shipped Peridot BEFORE this was made publically canon, hell I did the same! Amedot made me happy! Still, you have to understand people's valid discomfort over an aromantic character being put in a romantic relationship.
Peridot has always been ace coded, and her being aro makes complete sense in the show! The bad excuses I've seen of people saying she can't, or god forbid SHOULDN'T be aro/ace being thrown around just so people can validate their ships are filled with aphobic tropes. Unintentional or not, this is incredibly harmful. Also, saying it's bad that she's aro/ace because it's inherently stereotyping autistic people is something I just cannot get behind, because aro/ace autistic people exist and are valid. I would know, I am an asexual autistic person.
What I'm trying to say is this. PLEASE let people have their aro/ace representation. Please stop fighting so hard to take this away from them as if you're shipping is more important than these entire identities. Representation is already so small and mostly poorly handled as it is, and I honestly believe Peridot is great representation and a great character. Let people have this, and let people be discomforted by Peridot being romantically shipped.
That being said, I don't think hate the other way is a good solution either. It's hard to let go of something you are emotionally attached to, and that takes time. Also, someone who ships her could always make the argument of Peridot being in a queerplatonic relationship that's more complicated and nuanced then a typical romantic ship. Aromanticism is a spectrum afterall. The problem isn't necessarily headcanoning Peridot in relationships, it's actively ignoring aromantic people exist and "preferring she wasn't" aro/ace to keep shipping her the same exact way you always have.
Just respect Aro/Ace people and stop actively invalidating them in order to defend your ship.

intimacy. (amedot one-shot)
One-Shot
Summary: After seeing how happy Amethyst was to be fused as Opal and being with Pearl, Peridot begins to question her own relationship with the purple quartz.
Word Count: 5624 words
AO3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/24928966
Notes: Rated T for Making Out. This was inspired by Nerd_Peridot's fic 'Closeness' and the fact that Maya Petersen confirmed Peridot to be aroace.
Peridot watched her closely; curious green eyes tracking the rays of sunlight that seeped through thick silvery strands, tracing her lavender skin as it soaked in the sun’s kiss. She watched how the fusion moved- delicate, gentle, yet strong and steadfast. It was like watching a dance between two that was only shared by one. Leading the other within the smallest of movements, leaning into each other, pulling away, stepping forth, and then stepping back - following their invisible partner as if they were two opposites of a magnet.
The small olivine gem propped her chin on her two green hands, staring as the fusion continued to dance around, smooth and calculated but yet… so unexpected, carefree. The lavender fusion drew her hands upwards, pressed gently on her thighs to her waist, sliding carefully around her chest as it reached the back of her neck, playing with the back ends of her hair as her fingers danced with silver strands.
Peridot continued to listen as a boisterous laugh slipped from Opal’s lips, tumbling into the air in a mix of love and joy, flirting with the wind as their laughter carried on to Peridot’s ears. Somehow, it hadn’t fit in with the other voices: Steven, whose voice was powerful and light as he jumped around and yelled in glee. Garnet’s, who was as down-to-earth as always, her tone like an anvil sunk in the soil as she held a conversation with herself. Lapis's laughter, however soft, was recognizable from miles away. All of them were there and yet, Opal’s was the only one that Peridot could care to hear.
It was a beautiful melody, somehow. Not Pearl, but not Amethyst, either. Dark, smooth and rich, reminding Peridot greatly of something Steven had shown her once: Honey, was what he called it- the product of the earthly organisms called ‘bees’. At the time, Peridot regarded it as one of the greatest liquids she had ever seen on Earth, but now, she felt as if Opal’s voice would put any bees’ work to shame. A lovely voice embodied by someone bigger than both of her components, a perfect personification of the two, and everything their relationship stood for.
‘Perfect,’ Peridot thought. She frowned when Opal rolled into the sand, arms close as she held herself, laughing and smiling. They laid there, caught in something that one of them had said that slipped through every fusion’s cracks, fingers intertwined with their own.
‘Is that not love?’ She silently wondered. Peridot remembered asking herself that the first time she had seen them fuse. Was it not different from the love that held Garnet together for all of these years? The green gem could feel something inside her twist: she was very well aware of Amethyst’s past feelings for Pearl- the fondness that Opal was giving herself was undoubtedly her. Did Amethyst still love Pearl… like she loved Peridot? Was she reliving all of those feelings again in the fusion that was called Opal?
Peridot felt her mouth twitch downwards and her brows furrow. What was her relationship with Amethyst? She knew they were ‘together’, but… what did it look like, to her? Were they not ‘together’ like Garnet? Were they not complete without fusion? There was just something about Opal that made her stand out to Peridot and made her feel so inferior, so fearful, angry even. Peridot could not quite figure out why that was the case. Maybe… just maybe it was the fact that Opal was a perfect mix of Amethyst and Pearl? A perfect representation of their relationship? Whatever it was that made her feel that way, Peridot happened to not like it, as she was reminded every second of it.
After minutes and minutes of watching the graceful fusion happily, almost lovingly dance and dance around, Amethyst and Pearl un-fused. They were no longer the experience that they shared together called Opal. Now… they were just Amethyst and Pearl, and a small part of Peridot was fairly happy that they were un-fused. However, the happiness she felt happened to be short-lived, as she now watched Amethyst and Pearl hold each other in the midst of what seemed to be a celebration, which happened to make her feel even angrier.
It… made her feel weirdly possessive. Peridot knew Amethyst wasn’t a prop or a prize to be won, but she felt like Pearl, Opal was taking Amethyst away from her… taking away her partner. At the moment, she felt so many things that clashed and conflicted with each other, and it all spiraled at once. Deep down, she knew she was being unreasonable. She knew she was being irrational. And she knew she was being illogical, but the more she watched and watched the two hug and chatter, the more the temperature of her face had risen.
After a few minutes of watching the pair, and trying to distract her heavy, constant thoughts with the gentle but uneasy ocean waves crashing into each other, Peridot’s emotions got the best of her, as she had now decided enough was enough. Peridot sat up from her position and then stood up, brushing the delicious and velvety sand off of her leggings. She walked across the beach, walking over to the purple quartz and the graceful Pearl.
“Oh hey, Peri!” Amethyst happily waved at the younger gem. Even though Amethyst looked exceptionally happy to see her, Peridot couldn’t help but question Amethyst’s relationship with Pearl. Peridot couldn’t help but question her very own relationship with Amethyst. Amethyst looked so incredibly happy to be with Pearl, she looked so happy being fused with Pearl. Did Peridot make her this happy? Who knew? Amethyst then gave the green gem a side hug by throwing her chubby purple arm around Peridot’s bare shoulder, pulling her in, “Did ya see us, Dot? Weren’t we so cool?”
Peridot didn’t react that much to Amethyst’s question, only shrugging and pushing Amethyst’s vastly-sized hand away. Amethyst looked bewildered, cocking her head, and narrowing her eyes as if she were puzzled by Peridot’s behavior all of the sudden. “Oh yeah… I suppose,” The technician faltered, avoiding making eye contact with Amethyst. She felt so ridiculous. She was so confused. Deep down, she knew Amethyst and Pearl were just friends. But seeing how happy Opal was to just exist made her feel quite uncertain. She didn’t want to push Amethyst away, but she didn’t know how else to act. All of this was so… illogical.
A small but perky laugh slipped from in between the folds of Pearl’s thin, soft lips. She playfully rolled her eyes, while she continued to smile down at the purple gem that stood before her, “Only because of your ability to live in the moment.”
A faint but clearly visible purple blush dusted Amethyst’s chubby cheeks while a small, boisterous laugh tugged at her plump lips. The little blush on her face began to spiral, grow, as she put one of her arms behind her head and managed to muster out, “Haha… oh well… I-I thought you were pretty cool too, P!” She timidly took a step back, now hiding behind many strands of her voluminous, lavender hair.
And for some reason this made Peridot feel even worse inside. She felt so infuriated. Amethyst was supposed to be HER partner, and she really didn’t want for Pearl to take that away from her. Peridot began to cling onto Amethyst, like a little girl who would cling onto her rag doll. Peridot began to rub her face against Amethyst’s shoulder with pure spite, hoping Pearl would get the memo. Peridot then buried her face in the hook of Amethyst’s neck, and began to brush and brush against it, as if she were a cat claiming its territory.
Amethyst seemed to take notice of Peridot’s sudden behavior change, as she had flinched and marveled, “O-oh someone’s pretty affectionate all of the sudden!” She placed her hand on Peridot’s head and began to rub her chubby fingers through Peridot’s pyramid of golden blonde hair. But as Peridot got more and more affectionate towards her partner by the minute, Amethyst seemed to become distracted from her conversation with Pearl. Amethyst faux cleared her throat and went on to say, “Hey P… It’s been a long day, and I kinda wanna relax now. So, uh, I’m gonna go chill in my room if that’s cool with you, y’know?”
Pearl’s eyes widened, seemingly surprised by the sudden change in Amethyst’s tone and behavior, “Oh?” However, that surprise quickly faded away, “That’s okay, Amethyst. I was planning to go out into town with Bismuth anyway.”
Amethyst gave the taller gem a small smile, “Thanks for being understanding.” As soon as Pearl walked off, Amethyst pushed Peridot away and lent her hand out to the green gem as if she was giving Peridot her own personal invitation, “Heh, y’know I wouldn’t go without asking ya first, P-Dot?” The tone of her voice changed to one that was seemingly mocking someone familiar to the two of them, “That would be simply rude. You are taking time out of your day just to visit me, after all.”
This got a small smirk, and somewhat of a giggle out of Peridot. Amethyst’s occasional dorkiness was just too adorable for her. Peridot took Amethyst’s offer by placing her hand on top of Amethyst’s and intertwining their hands, “Sure, why not?” Amethyst began to walk, taking the lead. Amethyst led Peridot up the wooden stairs, and through the halls of the newly renovated beach house, and to the crystalline warp pad which sat in the temple.
Upon walking up to the door that led to Amethyst’s room, the door split into two halves, with a wavy line and purple light appeared to have a slime-like texture. Entering Amethyst’s room, Peridot kept her smaller, green hand intertwined with Amethyst’s bigger, bulkier hand. Even though she and Amethyst had been partners for seemingly months now, meaning she had been in Amethyst’s room at least thousands of times now, her room was still such a sight to see. Peridot felt she needed to examine it every time she was in there. The room was… incredibly chaotic. Frankly, it was a mess.
As Amethyst led Peridot further into the clutter and into the mess she called home, Peridot tripped over several objects that had been left out by Amethyst. The room had geodes and even some grass-like tiles. Although the room was quite disarrayed and normally that would bother Peridot, it didn’t. She thought it was exquisitely unique, and she thought it was part of what made Amethyst… Amethyst. Peridot continued to examine the room as Amethyst led her to a messy pile of pillows and blankets.
Once they arrived at the mess of pillows and blankets, Amethyst patted the middle of it as an implication that she wanted Peridot to lie down. Peridot reluctantly obliged and properly laid herself down on the mess, as she watched Amethyst climb on top of her. Peridot looked up at the purple quartz, while Amethyst tied her messy lavender mane into a ponytail. Amethyst was so, so beautiful, and normally when Peridot was in an affectionate mood, she would want to have Amethyst like this, but-- something was on her mind, something was bothering her.
Peridot could feel her cheeks burning up as she watched a small little smirk begin to form across Amethyst’s face. Amethyst’s face began to grow hotter too, while she noticeably but gently bit her bottom lip and tucked a thin strand of purple hair behind one of her ears. Amethyst then leaned in and started gently kissing Peridot, first a gentle one on her pointy nose, and next, a small kiss on her thin, green lips. But that small kiss turned into smooches, with Amethyst continuously kissing and kissing the other gem’s mouth. Peridot didn’t really feel much and didn’t seem to respond much, hearing Amethyst make soft noises out of pure bliss and pleasure while kissing her. Next thing Peridot felt was Amethyst’s plump purple lips against her sensitive green neck, gently and feathery but passionately, and intensely trailing down and down, moving to the crook of the neck.
But all of a sudden, the older gem stopped, quickly pulling away from the gem below her. Peridot felt surprised, as her eyes widened and her chest began to thump. “W- why’d you stop?” Peridot asked the purple quartz in a moment of panic, hoping she hadn’t offended or upset Amethyst. Out of new felt strong anxiety, Peridot held one of her hands up to her mouth and began to nibble on the tips of her fingers.
Amethyst’s blush grew. But this time, it wasn’t a flirty or lustful blush, it seemed to be a flustered blush. She buried her face into her hands, not hiding the fact she was obviously embarrassed about something, which happened to confuse Peridot even more. Amethyst then lifted her face up, making eye contact with the technician once again, saying, “I-I’m sorry Dot. It’s just, you seemed uncomfortable and I didn’t really want to push you into anything you weren’t comfortable with, so I… stopped.”
Peridot sighed in relief, but a small part of her still felt this sharp, pounding anxiety, “No, Amethyst, please do not feel like you have to apologize. I… I am absolutely fine. I guess that, I am not really in the mood for kissing right now due to how exhausted I feel.” Peridot paused and briefly looked off to the side, avoiding making eye contact with Amethyst, “I am fine with cuddling though, as that would be rather nice.”
A wobbly, unsure but strangely warm smile formed across the purple quartz’s face. However, that flustered blush she wore seemed to turn into a loving, admiring blush, as she lovingly stared at the younger gem. “Yeah... I’m fine with that, but…,” The bigger gem paused. Peridot could tell she looked hesitant, by the way she looked off to the side and the way the smile on her face faded. After a few seconds she looked back at Peridot, with a serious look on her face, “But if anything’s wrong, you really need to tell me, Dot... You and I both know keeping secrets from each other isn’t exactly healthy.”
Peridot looked away again, thinking about how happy Amethyst was with Pearl and questioning how she should go about this. Should she bring it up to Amethyst? Would Amethyst get upset with her? It… wasn’t worth it. Peridot knew that what she was doing was unhealthy, but a part of her was afraid Amethyst wouldn’t take it very well and would lash out at her… just like Lapis did. Only seconds later, she looked back at Amethyst, a faux smile covering her face, as she gently took the other gem’s bigger hands and said, “Listen… Amethyst, I appreciate how protective you are of me and how caring you are, but I am certainly fine. As I have stated before, I am just not in the mood for kissing right now. Okay?”
“Ugh, I know, I know. I just can’t help but worry when ya start acting weird though. I know most of the time it’s you not wanting to be affectionate and I am totally okay with that, but… sometimes I get the feeling that you’re genuinely upset about something or upset with something I did,” Amethyst explained to her on why she was so worried and seemingly obsessive of Peridot’s comfort. Amethyst then tucked a strand of lavender behind her ear and timidly peered down.
“You worry way too much about me,” Peridot lovingly smiled at her. A part of her was starting to trust the purple quartz, trust that she only loved her and that she was happier with her than anyone else. That she was over her feelings for Pearl. But another part of her, a quiet, silvery voice, kept telling her that her relationship with Amethyst would only feel secure if they fused, because… that’s what Amethyst wants. Right? Peridot continued by saying, “And, don’t get me wrong, I definitely appreciate that quality about you. How protective you are of me. However, I’d like to assure you that nothing is wrong and there is no need to worry about me.”
“Ugh, I know,” Amethyst rasped, then pausing as if she were taking the moment to think about something. She frustratedly buried her face into her hands, “Gross, I’m starting to sound like Pearl with the nagging and being overly protective.” And after a moment, she lifted her head from the palms of her hands, sighing, “Can you believe it? Maybe it’s because she and I have gotten closer… Y’know, Dot… Pearl and I weren’t always buddy-buddy. I know I told you at one point I thought she was kinda cute and I wanted to get to know her more, but, before you came around, Pearl and I were always at each other’s throats. I guess she was having a hard time with losing Rose, and we’re two very different people. But, it took us actually communicating to understand each other, and I’m pretty happy about that. If it wasn’t for Steven, I… wouldn’t be as close with Pearl as I am today.”
The faint but noticeable smile on Peridot’s face washed away, as the mere thought of Pearl or even the mere mentioning of Pearl’s name fairly upset her at the moment. Yes, she was happy for Amethyst, well -- at least she wanted to be, but she could not shake the overwhelming feeling of prolonged jealousy. All of the events that had taken place today and prior knowledge of Amethyst’s feelings towards Pearl just made her feel like she needed to compete with the elegant Pearl for the quartz’s affections. Peridot let out a long, mellow sigh, “I am happy for you, Amethyst.” Afterward, she paused and then went on to say, “Is it… would it be okay to cuddle right now?”
“Of course Peri,” Amethyst smiled, as she lifted her hand to caress Peridot’s face. The older gem lied down on her side, gesturing for Peridot to get closer. This was quite normal for them -- cuddling and holding each other. Sometimes Amethyst would be the one holding Peridot, other times it would be Peridot holding Amethyst. Peridot took a long moment to slowly lay down on her side and gently wrap her green arms around the older gem, squeezing her like she was a cuddly teddy bear. Peridot’s face was now pressed up against the other gem’s back, as she watched Amethyst drift deeper and deeper into sleep. It was usually easy for the gem to fall sleeping while holding Amethyst because she was usually so relaxed. However, this time felt different… It was as if she couldn’t stop obsessing over Opal, over Pearl, and over Amethyst’s relationship with her. And by the time she was able to drift off into a light sleep, she came to the conclusion that… Maybe the best option for their relationship to feel secure, was for her to fuse with Amethyst.
------
It was the next morning, Peridot left after a few hours, as it felt necessary for her to go back to Little Homeworld and tend to her duties. Amethyst knew Peridot played a huge role in the foundation of Little Homeworld and she understood that. Amethyst woke up to hearing the rippling, soothing noises of the waterfalls actively flowing in her room, and then sat up from the pile of blankets and pillows she slept on, picking up her phone in the process. She had gotten one a little while ago she could keep in contact with the other gems and Steven when needed. The first notification that appeared on her phone happened to be a text from a familiar green gem.
Amethyst’s eyes narrowed, her head tilting in a swirl of newfound confusion. Peridot had asked her to meet at the very top of the hill that overlooked the crystal gem temple, but… what for? Peridot didn’t seem to specify why. But then again -- Peridot behaving weirdly was quite normal for her, so she was fairly used to it by now. Maybe she just wanted to hang out again, so what did Amethyst know? The purple gem stood up from her place and started to brush through her tangled mane of lavender hair, making sure it wasn’t that messy for Peridot’s liking.
After getting somewhat ready for her day with Peridot, she headed off to the given destination on foot. Five minutes later, she arrived. All she saw was Peridot, just standing on the edge of the hill, with a weird look on her face. Peridot’s look of seriousness, only frightened and confused Amethyst, even more, seeing as all of this behavior came off as vague, unsettling. Amethyst tried to act nonchalant about it, putting one arm behind her head and taking a step towards the green gem, “Yo, Peri. I’m here. Is… everything alright?”
Peridot looked down, making it hard for Amethyst to read whatever expression she had on her face. She shuffled her feet around and put her thin, green arms behind her back like she was exhaustively nervous about something. Peridot looked back up after a few moments and put on a small, nervous smile, enthusiastically saying, “Everything is more than okay, Amethyst!”
Amethyst’s face crumbled a bit, knowing something was up. However, she brushed whatever concerns she had aside for just one minute and wrapped her arm around the other gem, pulling Peridot’s body only inches closer to hers. “Is that so, huh?” The purple gem asked, in a seemingly sarcastic but also low, sultry tone of voice. “I couldn’t really tell with the oh-so-serious look on your face, hehe,” She teased Peridot while twirling a strand of lavender around one of her fingers
Peridot pushed her arm away, taking a step back from the purple gem. Amethyst’s chest heaved, thumped, hoping she hadn’t just messed everything up and made Peridot uncomfortable. The technician brushed off her leggings as if Amethyst had gotten something on her, and looked at Amethyst with a serious look again, “Actually, there is something I wanted to ask you…” Amethyst then watched the green gem slowly get down on one of her knees, as if Peridot were going to propose to the purple quartz. Amethyst’s chest thumped even more because if that were the case, Amethyst knew she wasn’t ready for something as serious as marriage and she didn’t think Peridot would truly want something so serious. Her fake heart raced and raced, feeling like it was on the verge exploding while she waited for what Peridot was going to say next. Peridot looked up at her, with the widest smile covering her face and this huge blush, “Amethyst… would you be willing to fuse with me?”
A wave of the sudden surprise hit the quartz. All of this felt superficial, surreal. Peridot never asked to fuse with her before, in fact, she was pretty sure that Peridot truly didn’t want fusion. Amethyst knew she was rushing into things and she couldn’t figure out why. Only one thought ran through her mind and that was; Why now? All she could manage to do was muster out an awkward, “Haha, what?” The purple gem’s awkward laughter turned into serious, deep laughter, her face turning from a lilac purple color to a deep, dark purple. She laughed and laughed -- finding Peridot’s dorkiness to be too adorable for her taste. Amethyst laughed so much that her stomach actually began to hurt, and… to the point where she failed to realize a look of hurt washed over Peridot’s slim face, with green gem’s eyes narrowing and her fists clenching.
“...Amethyst!”
The older gem flinched, surprised by Peridot’s sudden outburst. Was she actually being serious about fusing? Did she really want this or was she just saying that she wanted this? Amethyst took a step back from the younger gem and could only seem to say, “...Huh?” Amethyst then took her lavender bangs and hid them behind her round purple ears, looking at Peridot straight in the eyes, her eyes sparkling with an unfamiliar sense of fear and suspense.
Peridot’s eyes widened, now fully realizing she had just yelled at Amethyst. However, that shock faded soon enough, her face transitioning from a look of surprise to anger. Peridot knew the damage of her yelling at Amethyst had already been done, so she felt that there was no going back. “I’m-I’m being serious!” Peridot yelled, throwing her arms into the air in pure frustration. She then took a step back and crossed her green arms, clearly upset with Amethyst’s reaction to the big question.
Amethyst’s chest raced, scrambling for something, anything, to say to Peridot in response. She now realized Peridot was being serious about wanting to fuse, and she almost felt bad for laughing at her. Her eyes narrowed, and it had looked like she was about to be poofed. “What’s… what’s gotten into you all of the sudden?” The purple gem shuddered, suddenly sounding hurt by Peridot’s outburst.
Peridot let out a long, frustrated groan, running her smaller green fingers through her pyramid of golden hair. She sighed, her eyebrows furrowing and her pointy nose wrinkling while she did so. “...Whatever do you mean by that?” The technician asked, in an almost passive-aggressive tone of voice.
“Ugh! I knew something was up with you!” Amethyst chastised the other gem. Both of her eyebrows pulled down, looking at Peridot with her glaring eyes and her pursed purple lips. She didn’t want to be upset with Peridot, but she also didn’t want for Peridot to lie to her. She thought Peridot trusted her, and it hurt her deeply that she didn’t. “You were acting totally weird last night and all of a sudden you say you want to fuse with me? Like dude, what?”
“Say?” The younger gem inquired. Her behavior then changed, seemingly within a flash. She gave Amethyst a loving smile and took a step forward. Peridot took Amethyst’s hand and gently squeezed it, softly saying, “Amethyst, I DO want to fuse with you.”
Amethyst firmly pulled her hand back from Peridot’s hold. Even though she could see how hurt and rejected Peridot looked at the moment, she knew taking that action and being firm with her was for the best. A long, soft sigh slipped from her plum-stained lips, “Peridot, you just think you want that… I know you, I know you don’t want that. You’re only saying you do to…”
“To… what?”
“Ha, I dunno…,” Amethyst shrugged, looking off to the side and crossing her bigger arms, “To… prove something to me?”
“W-what?” Peridot asked, with a look of shock painted on her face. “I’m… I’m not trying to prove anything to you!” The green gem denied, making frustrated hand gestures as she continued to argue with Amethyst. Peridot then buried her face deep into her palms and huffed. Peridot looked back up at the purple quartz and took off her golden-shaded visors, revealing a big pair of green eyes. “...Why can’t you just trust me with this?!” Peridot questioned, her eyes glaring with hurt and anger.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, I do. But… I know you Peri, and I know fusion or anything y’know… too imitate can really make you uncomfortable,” Amethyst explained. She began to bite the tips of her fingernails and slouched a bit as if the confrontation between her and Peridot was starting to make her feel a bit anxious. Amethyst didn’t want to make Peridot upset or fight with her, and she hated seeing Peridot so frustrated, but she just wanted to do what was best for her partner and her relationship. Amethyst sighed, “Look -- I just don’t get why you’re interested in fusion all of the sudden… and I really don’t want ya to do something you’ll regret or feel squicky with.”
“Uncomfortable?” Peridot wondered out loud. She began to laugh, and to Amethyst, it seemed fake. It seemed… painful. Amethyst’s stomach twisted into knots as she watched Peridot laugh, because she knew deep down, it wasn’t a genuine one. “...Amethyst, you are clearly not understanding my motives here!” Peridot exclaimed, gently taking Amethyst’s hands again. “I want to make you happy! And this being the ultimate endgame for a relationship would absolutely do so!”
“The… ultimate endgame?” Amethyst queried, slightly tilting her head to the left in even more confusion. What did Peridot even mean by that? But then it came to Amethyst -- Peridot was talking about her fusing with Pearl the other day. Amethyst rolled her eyes in annoyance, “Wait… don’t tell me… is this about Opal? DUDE, you know I don’t feel that way about Pearl anymore or anything like that…”
“Amethyst, I knew that,” Was all Peridot could simply respond with. Peridot paused and peered down, making it hard for Amethyst to read her expression. All Amethyst knew that Peridot was incredibly embarrassed now that she had been called out for her behavior. “You just seemed… so much happier with Pearl, when you were fused as Opal. And I thought, as your partner, if I could do that one thing to make you happy, then all of it would be worth it.”
Amethyst smiled and put her hand up to Peridot’s face. She reached forwards and brushed her hand against it, getting a soft purr out of Peridot. “Peri…, You know how much I care for you, but… I don’t want you to risk your happiness just to make me happy,” Amethyst softly breathed. Amethyst took that same hand and put it under Peridot’s cheek, gently lifting her head up, “That’s not healthy dude… and you know that.”
Peridot watched Amethyst let go of the delicate hold she had on her chin and began to twiddle her two thumbs, the blush on Peridot’s face becoming clearly unmistakable now. “I just thought… maybe our relationship would be perfect if we… fused…,” Peridot sheepishly whispered, obviously feeling embarrassed by how emotional she became over all of this. Peridot could barely look at Amethyst straight in the eyes now, without feeling overwhelmingly ashamed of herself, and Amethyst knew that.
Even though Amethyst knew Peridot felt red-faced and fearful right now, Amethyst couldn’t help but chortle, a soft partly laugh slipping from the folds of her lips. That soft laughter turned into a deep, loud hearty laughter. After a few seconds of giggling at how all silly all of this was, the purple quartz stopped and sighed, “You’re… such a nerd… Peri -- no relationship is perfect! And, we don’t hafta fuse to make our relationship any stronger. What we have is already great, and the form of intimacy that we share together is already enough for me.” Amethyst paused, and looked at the other gem with a soft look in her big, deep blue eyes, “If I felt otherwise, I woulda told you that or even worse… left.”
Peridot’s brows arched with sadness, feeling like a complete idiot for this taking all of this so far. She felt so silly, and she feared Amethyst viewed her that way now. Peridot shamefully looked down at her two feet, “You’re right,” She somberly agreed. Then, Peridot felt a rush of anger strike her. However, she wasn’t angry at Amethyst, she was angry with herself, for how she acted. Peridot facepalmed, “Ugh, I feel like such a clod. I… really don’t know what got into me. I just saw how happy you were while fused as Opal, and I guess, it made me think I was not good enough for you. That the way I treat you and love you were not good enough for you.”
“Peri… you’re more than enough for me. You’re my best friend, and you’re my partner. This is gonna sound so cheesy but I don’t care… You mean the world to me, and I hate that ya ever thought otherwise… but I get it. I get being jealous, and I get feeling like you’re not good enough but…,” Amethyst blissfully rambled before coming to a sudden pause. She looked off to the side for the second, as if something else caught her attention, and she then looked back at Peridot, “Please believe me when I say that I love you. I know I don’t say it that often because it makes me feel squicky, but… I love you, Peridot, and I really hope you know that.” Amethyst put her hand on Peridot’s cheek again, gently cupping it.
Peridot’s heart melted. It was music to her ears to hear that Amethyst felt that way of her, and all she could do at the moment was nudge her face into Amethyst’s hand. The way she felt about Amethyst was so complex. It wasn’t just platonic, but it wasn’t anything too romantic. After a few seconds of leaving the purple quartz waiting, a soft whisper slid from her thin green lips, “I… love you too.”
Amethyst let go of Peridot’s cheek and left a soft, tender kiss on the cheek that she had been holding, then casually walking off. This confused Peridot, as Amethyst walking away from her, felt out of nowhere. However, after a second, the older gem paused, realizing Peridot was not following her. Amethyst looked at Peridot, with a smile forming on her face for what felt like was the millionth time that day, and leant her bigger hand out to her, “You comin’?”
Peridot gave the older gem a soft, loving smile. Peridot took her hand, slipping her smaller fingers through Amethyst’s bigger fingers, and lightly squeezed her hand, making Amethyst’s gem feel warmer inside. “...Of course.”

My SU 30 Days Challenge... all in the final day!
This took me so long and no one’s gonna read it anyway
1) FAVOURITE GEM
Peridot, Spinel and Pearl.
2) FAVOURITE HUMAN
If Steven doesn’t count, then Connie and Pink!Lars (is he even human anymore???)
3) AN UNDERRATED CHARACTER WHO YOU LIKE
Cat Steven. Yes, Cat Steven.
4) FAVOURITE FUSION
Excluding Garnet, who is her own complex character…
I absolutely love Obsidian! Their design is awesome, they’re badass and the fusion of the four (five) protagonist… and I loved the way they created their weapon: open mouth full of lava, insert hilt, forge HUGE sword!
5) A FUSION YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN
A LAPIDOT FUSION, GOD DAMN IT!!
6) THE CHARACTER WHO YOU FIND THE MOST RELATABLE
Peridot, because I also fangirl/get obsessed over things to the point of exasperating people. Also Pearl because I’m a a ISTJ Virgo who most likely has OCD.
7) FAVOURITE PET OR ANIMAL
Cat Steven, again (and here’s why). Sorry, Lion: I love you, but I like my feline small and stereotype-breaking
8) FAVOURITE SHIP
L A P I D O T. Also Spinearl (Spinel x Pink Pearl)
9) FAVOURITE SONG
“Other Friends”, “It’s Over, Isn’t It?” and “Here Comes a Thought”
10) FAVOURITE SEASON 1 EPISODE
Future Vision, Rose’s Scabbard and Jailbreak
11) FAVOURITE SEASON 2 EPISODE
Log Date 7 15 2 and The Answer
12) FAVOURITE SEASON 3 EPISODE
Too Short To Ride and Mr Greg
13) FAVOURITE SEASON 4 EPISODE
Last One Out Of Beach City
14) FAVOURITE SEASON 5 EPISODE
Change Your Mind, A Single Pale Rose and Can’t Go Back
15) FAVOURITE EPISODE OF SU FUTURE
In Dreams, I Am My Monster, Volleyball and Snow Day
16) A SCENE THAT MAKES YOU LAUGH
Any scene where Peridot makes or say a funny thing is a goldmine
17) A SCENE THAT MAKES YOU CRY
The ending of I Am My Monster, when Steven has a liberating cry at long last, surrounded by everyone he loves: Zach Callison’s voice acting was *chef’s kiss*
18) FAVOURITE LOCATION IN THE SHOW
Steven’s house
19) MOST MEMORABLE QUOTE
“Oh my stars, I TOUCHED [the Rejuvenator]! I could have lost all my character development!” – Peridot (SU The Movie)
I love that quote because 1) fourth wall breaking joke and 2) it makes my mom laugh so hard because it took her forever to like Peridot - and hours of me explaining to my mom why Peridot is the most beautifully developed character in SU (you know that “Me Explaining X – My Mom” meme? That’s it, that’s me and my mom with Peridot as the topic)
20) WHO WOULD BE YOUR DIAMOND?
Blue Diamond. I just think she’s neat – and the only Diamond I don’t dislike.
21) A GEMSTONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN AS A CHARACTER
We’ve finally seen what Morganite looks like in the Steven Universe: End Of An Era artbook
22) FAVOURITE CORRUPTED GEM DESIGN
…Does Kaiju Steven count? I’m not too fond of corrupted Gems’ designs
23) AN UNASWERED QUESTION OR MYSTERY YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN ANSWERED
The fuck was in that chest inside Lion’s mane???
24) THE MOST SURPRISING PLOT TWIST
I actually joined the fandom right after Season 5 ended, so, because of Internet, I (sadly) knew more-or-less all about the biggest plot twists.
So I’m gonna say Spinel and her backstory.
25) FAVOURITE STORYBOARDER
As long as they don’t make Peridot a tiny gremlin with huge hair and Pearl’s nose too long and pointed, I don’t care much.
But I did love the storyboard for In Dreams (so I guess Etienne Guignard and Maya Petersen – despite the latter’s… questionable attempts to first say “I love Amedot, Amedot is canon!” and then “You know what? Peridot is actually aroace” *cue fire in the fandom* - I’m still not over the “Peridot is aroace” Drama in the Peridot tag after their statement)
Note that I don’t have anything against either Amedot or aroace Peridot. It’s just the fandom’s reactions that are... wild, to say the least - and Maya couldn’t not have known that after 5 seasons and a Movie.
26) FAVOURITE ACTOR
Deedee Magno Hall for the series as a whole (she can go from maternal to hysterical to sad to singing like an angel).
Sarah Stiles for The Movie (you can really feel the crazy, sad, toony tone in her voice and Other Friends is a BOP).
Zach Callison for both The Movie and Future (the desperation in his voice was incredible!)
27) FAVOURITE GEM WEAPON OR POWER
Power – Shapeshifting (I’m lame and unoriginal, I know)
Gem Weapon – Uhh… Obsidian’s huge sword?
28) OVERRAL FAVOURITE SEASON
Both Future and Season 5
29) FAVOURITE PIECE OF MERCHANDISE
I love her so much!
30) FAVOURITE MEMORY OF THE SHOW OR FANDOM
Since I’ve been in the fandom for a very short time (I’ve discovered the series too late), I say everyone losing their shit at Spinel and basically adopting her.

what is your absolute favorite ship? How did you start shipping Stevidot? And rant about any ship you feel like, good or bad? :))
… you fool
OH GOD ALL-TIME FAVORITE SHIP YOU SAY. YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I CAN’T CHOOSE ONE.
(it’d probably be Stevidot anyway; objectively I’ve done more for it than anything else I ever shipped in my life and it’s absolutely precious both in platonic and romantic forms)
BUT IN THE INTEREST OF FAIRNESS… and attempt to tone down redundancy, let’s see what other ships earned the “OTP” label from me!
I mean, I pretty much had to lowkey ship Mamoru Chiba x Ami Mizuno because Usagi/Mamoru is basically what Connverse wishes it could be as far as the Ultimate Ship goes. So at the height of my involvement in the fandom (you know, late 90s era), I was never brave enough to make anything for this ship. But the few times they get to interact in the classic anime is legit adorable stuff and I wish we could’ve had more of it.
Before Gem Ascension, before Travels of the Trifecta, my greatest multichaptered epic was a Digimon Tamers fic called By My Decision. I was a hardcore Digimon fan in my early teen years well before I ever got into Pokemon, in fact. And I shipped shitloads of pairings in Adventure and 02 - I can only imagine how many of those would be demonized by the new age fandom puritans of Tumblr nowadays. You can actually see literally everything I ever shipped on my FFN profile here.
But I didn’t really make anything for the first two seasons. Tamers was what really sparked my inspiration, because Takato and Jenrya… honestly, they’re just adorable together. They get to bond a lot, they’re really in touch with their feelings (contrasting to token girl Ruki who was a stiff hardass most of the time), and I often got the impression that Jenrya, unlike Takato, really doesn’t have any other friends.
So of course, I tormented these two on the regular in my story. I of course didn’t forget Juri (for I love her dearly); I was kinda trying a love triangle subversion with Takato angsting over loving both Jenrya and Juri… while Juri’s still got so much PTSD (story is 2 years post-series), shipping is hardly on her mind, and Jenrya’s outright in denial of his feelings for Takato to the point where it very literally screws him up and awakens some inner darkness of his own. I even had Jenrya and Juri bond, but it was pretty platonic stuff.
Still, this ship was way down on the totem pole at the height of Tamers’ fandom. Very frustrating. Takato/Ruki and Jenrya/Ruki were way more popular and I hated both of those ships something fierce. I love Ruki, but I just cringe at the idea of shipping her with either of her fellow leads. Then Jenrya/Ryo got something of a cult following that I couldn’t stand; admittedly I was jealous it was getting the representation that I felt Takato/Jenrya desperately needed more, and I also didn’t like Jenryo in its own right, anyway.
But yeah. Jenkato is a very underappreciated ship that I loved dearly and invested many of my teenage years into.
So, here’s a fun fact: While I played the classic games (my cousins had a Sega Genesis), the way I was mostly raised on Sonic was via the first two cartoon series and the Archie Comics version of the franchise. Archieverse was largely based on the SatAM cartoon; Amy Rose also didn’t exist in the show and it took about 25 issues for her to show up in the comic.
So I was big on Tails x Amy. For a long-ass time. And really, the ship was really only feasible in the Archie continuity. There, Tails is actually older than his usual depicted canon age and Amy is introduced to be around his age before she artificially aged herself with a magic ring so that she could later take on her Sonic Adventure design.
Before that… in these years, Sally was the most well-known love interest of Sonic in the west. So Sonic/Sally seemed like a lock (none of us knowing how Sega felt about that at the time) - and in retrospect I honestly believe it’s a far better Sonic ship than his more well-known modern alternatives.
So, because of Sally’s prominence, Amy was relegated to Sonic’s fangirl and her crush wasn’t really that big a deal. Honestly, that was for the best, as I by far found Amy way more tolerable in Archie’s incarnation than the majority of her other canon contemporaries (Sonic the Comic Amy Rose is more of a competent badass, though).
Tails and Amy had some good banter in Archieverse and the few times they were allowed time to do stuff together as a duo, they were very cute and endearing and I loved them.
Tails also had a lot more going on in terms of character development and backstory in Archieverse. Like, a lot more going on. He even had a “Chosen One” deal that sadly didn’t have a very good payoff, but. It’s more than what they really do with Tails in any other continuity.
Bear in mind, I started on these comics when I was eight or nine years old. Yet I followed this comic well into my late teens and even part of my early twenties, so you can tell Archieverse Sonic has shitloads of lore to it to have that long of an ongoing narrative.
After Sonic Adventure was released, then the Sonamy shipping started to explode. Amy was front-and-center in the spotlight, Sally became the obscure figure in the fandom, and it’s more-or-less stayed that way ever since.
But I was like “It’s okay! Tails and Amy are still tight in Archieverse! Sucks they have to adjust to Sega’s many changes but they’re still best buddies who’ll hopefully get married one day….”
Then 25 Years Later happened and for some goddamned stupid-ass reason, Tails was paired with Mina the Mongoose and I believe Amy was suspiciously never ever mentioned in the future timeline stories (as Sonic and Sally did become endgame in this little series).
Tails and Mina had little to no interaction, and Mina was largely there to be a potential Sonic love interest, and even after she moved on, she got together with another character and still didn’t interact with Tails.
I was sooooooo pissed off. Archieverse was my one hope for Tails/Amy becoming a thing and they ruined it for me. :(
I did get a consolation prize in Geoffrey St. John x Hershey becoming so canon they actually did marry. That’s another one I shipped ever since they first interacted years and years ago.
Of course, Hershey was then “killed off” - and was set for a major comeback, but Ken Penders put a stop to that and had them both erased from reality because fuck Ken Penders, I actually got a nice thing and you yanked it right out of my hands.
Genis Sage x Mithos Yggdrasill from Tales of Symphonia, a ship I hardcore loved enough to write about. Also a ship I think Tumblr would burn me at the stake for shipping at all, but you know what? Fuck Genis x Presea. It’s a boring-ass puppy love ship that in its own right should be lambasted similarly according to anti logic.
…. did I get sidetracked? I did? Pfff. Okay, let’s try and get to another question.
How I started shipping Stevidot?
Pretty simple story, really. I binged SU all the way up to Escapism (Change Your Mind hadn’t aired yet) last December/January. Also watched a looooot of Youtube clips. Most involving Peridot.
And inevitably, most involving Steven as well.
When I started getting into Peridot and SU as a whole enough to seek out fanfiction and whatnot, I didn’t really have any set shipping preferences at first. But when I made myself think about it… honestly, Stevidot just felt the most natural to me. I wanted to see stories about antics with those two specifically - I never liked Lapidot and Amedot did nothing for me ever. So Stevidot was like, pretty much the only thing I really focused on after a while.
Then I found A Gem Like You. And suddenly, INSPIRATION! I developed headcanons for Watcher’s fic, I started reading as much Stevidot as I could, and I was convinced it was the best pairing in the world and fucking hell I need to give it some representation after I noticed how relatively niche it was in the fandom.
And so, Stevidot consumed my soul for all time. I hope those clods are happy.
Rant about a ship, you say…
Good god, that really does need to be its own post. I have so much to say about various ships in general, I may need a bit to… uh, figure that out. Or throwing out some random ones I’d know about would help my focus, fff.

My Steven Universe Ships
I’m bored and waiting for more SU content so here I am talking about all SU pairings that I ship. Please note that this is only my own opinion and I that I respect anybody who disagrees with me.
Amethyst/Peridot (Amedot): I’ll admit that I cannot decide between this pairing and Lapidot. Peridot seemed to care about impressing Amethyst and getting on her good side more than Garnet or Pearl. She really cared when she hurt her feelings and tried very hard to make things right.
Bismuth/Biggs Jasper (Biggsmuth): We haven’t seen much of them but Bismuth seems to greatly care for Biggs. She said that Biggs was loved by everybody and went to save her first over everybody else who was bubbled. And they hugged when Biggs was cured of her corruption.
Blue Diamond/Yellow Diamond (Bellow Diamond): This is one of my favorite SU pairings. Yellow and Blue obviously care for each other greatly. White Diamond even said that Blue was Yellow’s weakness. Yellow always acted like a hard ass but was able to let her guard down around Blue.
Blue Pearl/Yellow Pearl (Bellow Pearl): I did not want to ship this pairing just because but after seeing Yellow model for Blue I’m on board.
Earth Beetle/Heaven Beetle (Hevearth?): I definitely want to learn more about them and what their actual gem names are. Even after being uncorrupted Sapphire still referred to them as the Earth and Heaven Beetles. And Sapphire had lost her memories at that point.
Jamie/Kiki (Jamiki?): Just a crack pairing that I threw in there because Kiki likes to run around town and Jamie runs around delivering the mail.
Jasper/Eyeball (Jasball): The fandom introduced me to this pairing. Eyeball seems to admire Jasper very much and both witnessed Pink Diamond’s alleged shattering.
Lapis Lazuli/Peridot (Lapidot): As mentioned above, I cannot decide between this pairing and Amedot. Peridot was interested in befriending Lapis right away and went above and beyond to try and impress her. Eventually they became happy roomies until Lapis fled Earth. Peridot was hurt but Lapis did try to bring her with her.
Lars/Sadie (Larsadie): It’s been obvious since season 1. There was some manipulation early on on both sides (Sadie tricked Lars into thinking they were stranded and Lars always used Sadie for his own needs) but their relationship later got better. And Lars talked about Sadie to the off-colors.
Pearl/Mystery Girl (MysteryPearl): With Rose Quartz gone forever I do want Pearl to eventually move on. Pearl was shown to be uncomfortable with human culture so her being with a human would definitely help her break boundaries. And Mystery Girl definitely seemed interested in some aspects of Pearl’s life.
Pearl/Rose Quartz (Pearlrose): This is actually one of my OTPs in SU. It’s mainly because I can relate to Pearl. They worked together for thousands of years. I respect Greg/Rose because it resulted in Steven and is essential to the plot but I will always see way more depth between Pearl and Rose. Plus Pearl was the only one who had known Rose as Pink Diamond as well.
Ruby/Sapphire (Rupphire): Well this one should be a no-brainer. There is literally a song about them being made of love and they are one of the first same-sex couples in a child’s cartoon.
Spinel/Pink Pearl (Spinearl): The fandom got me into this one recently but I can dig it. Pink Pearl was shown to be goofy in flashbacks and Spinel being Spinel would get along very well with her.
Steven/Connie (Connverse): This is another no-brainer. They were both a little young at the beginning of the series but still obviously had a crush on each other. And after the time skip it definitely is going to happen.
Yellowtail/Vidalia (Yellowdalia?): Well it’s canon. Vidalia explained that they hit it off. And it’s healthier than Vidalia’s previous relationship with Marty. Marty is an ass so it couldn’t have been healthy.

✌ Ship that you find cute but don’t ship:
Rosegarden from RWBY? I think they’d be cute once they grow older. Admittedly a mutual of mine ships them and when I first saw it I was like “huh, neat, I didn’t think of that possibility” :P
Amedot too, which sadly didn’t get enough screentime and was quickly replaced by Lapidot, but it’s one of the few SU ships (aside from the canon ones) that I find cute.
And lastly Phoenix/Maya. To me their relationship is more sibling-like, but I completely understand the people who think of them as a couple.
💙 Ship that you used to have as an OTP:
Sonamy. Poor, poor Sonamy. I used to adore it and I remember being overjoyed at all the ship tease in Sonic X. But canon really did it dirty and killed all the enthusiasm I used to have :(
(tbf I don’t think they’re 100% incompatible, but if I was a writer I’d spend a lot of time trying to develop their chemistry in order for their relationship to be believable)
💚 Ship that you secretly like:
Well it’s not really a secret now, is it :P
Jaspis intrigues me. I really really loved the idea of Lapis, the little, fragile-looking Lapis, torturing big brute Jasper in Malachite’s mindscape out of sadistic pleasure, and Jasper secretly enjoying it because she’s that self-destructive and she thinks she deserves it. I am a total slut for this kind of hateful, mutually harmful, I’m-just-using-you-to-feel-better-about-myself toxic relationship. Too bad Malachite as a whole was so wasted :V
And you know what, fuck it: Boom!Sonegg. Canon Sonegg is the equivalent of So Bad It’s Good, like it’s so outlandish that nobody can take it seriously, but Boom!Sonic and Boom!Eggman really had an interesting “friendly enemy” relationship, bordering on Foe Yay. Sadly, for obvious reasons, there’s very little material to find. And yes, I am well aware that one is 15 and the other is 50, which is the main reason I don’t actually ship them. But large age gaps in ships intrigue me, probably because they squick me out in real life lol.
💦 Ship that is taboo:
Aside from the ones I mentioned in the previous point, fun fact: one of my favorite AA fanfictions is one where Manfred von Karma and Miles Edgeworth fall in love and the two get into a romantic relationship, and it’s all set way before case 1-1 (so they get together when Miles is 18 and Manfred is 59). Extremely fucked up for so many reasons, and even the story acknowledges that such a relationship is unhealthy and will have problems in the future mainly because of the large age gap, but the writer was talented enough to make me believe they’d be cute together while I was reading it (and when I stopped I was like “what the actual fuck” lmao, it was like post-nut clarity), and that takes serious balls. I personally like it because it’s a nice change of pace from the 4732908 fics where Manfred rapes Miles because he’s Ebil :P
👀 Ship you’re curious about:
I suppose it means “ships that I can see the potential of”?
I recently found a person who ships Guts/Farnese. As I physically can’t even imagine Guts with anyone but Casca, I was very interested by this choice. And they did make a solid argument about their relationship and how, in the unlikely case Guts can’t end up with Casca, they’d be good together.

it's so fucking rare for someone with a lapis icon to not ship lapidot. even rarer for them to prefer amedot. tbh it's a huge trigger for me, as it is scarily similar to an old abusive relationship of mine, so i always hunt for it on blogs that follow me. and i have to say.... what a fucking relief it is
wow i don’t think i ever expected to get an ask like this but honestly thank g-d i did. yeah. you kinda echoed some of own unresolved feelings about it as well.
honestly, lapis is kind of a shit person but i really, really like her character. because she isn’t perfect coming out of an unstable relationship and she’s not ready for a new one. so many fix-its just wave away that emotional trauma, that mistrust and that fact that she isn’t open enough to take that on.
she’s a great character because her problems aren’t fixed. she’s changed, she’s made progress but lapis is a broken-down individual. she will never view the world the same way after whats happened to her. and i love her because of the descisions the crew made when creating her character. a lot of people, me included, who’ve been in any kind of abusive relationship, could really relate to a character like lapis.
not really a fan of lapidot, though. yeah, i see why people ship it. and yes, i love her and peridot as barnmates. it was cool seeing them interact outside of empire context. but peridot is too vunerable, too trusting, and not ready for that kind of serious relationship with all the emotional baggage that comes with being with someone like lapis. neither of them would benefit for a relationship like that.
i prefer amedot for the simple reason that i do not feel it would inevitably lead to this kind of tension, and i feel it would be beneficial for both peridot and amethyst. they’re in a similar place in life. they’re growing, maturing in their new positions after the events of the show.
they’ve been through a lot of things together and they’ve leaned on one another since the very beginning of peridots redemption arc. amethyst has helped peridot learn to be an earthling. peridot has helped amethyst learn to be herself.
this got way longer than i anticipated but i hadn’t really thought about it for a long time. i love lapis. but she needs to live for herself. this is basically just my personal interpretation of the characters.

Do you have any SU ships? :oc
Yeah!
(Spoilers for Steven Universe: Future!)
Ruby/Sapphire, of course!! They’re precious
Steven/Connie, because once Steven really works through his trauma (and he is! we love confirming he’s in therapy) they’ll be such a powerful battle couple, and they’re also just really sweet together
Pearl/Mystery Girl, and I wish MG got more than one episode lmao
Pearl/Volleyball, bc yes i love that they get to understand each other and they’re so good
Spinel/Volleyball is also v cute!
Pearl/Bismuth, bc YES. CANON. I LOVE THEM.
I don’t really have much in the way of Lapis or Peridot ships, but that’s not to say I don’t like ships with them! Amedot and Lapidot are still cute! I don’t really have any Jasper ships either.
Lars/Sadie and Sadie/Shep are both good too. I definitely don’t mind that Lars/Sadie wasn’t endgame, since I think it fit the show’s motifs nicely, but I liked it while it lasted (and after Lars underwent Character Development™)
I don’t really ship Pearl/Pink in a romantic way, like absolutely Pearl was in love with her but idk I feel like Pink always saw her as like a student or a knight.
Rose/Greg... listen. I love Pink/Rose so much, and I know that there’s a certain unfairness in the fact we learned her story in reverse and she really did change and become better but. I still think she should’ve told Greg more.
And I absolutely polyship The Cool Kids :)

Animals are 1 billion times easier to draw than humans and I can’t wait for that to not be true.
Here are some finished versions of some sketches I did for Amedot Week. I started having issues with human figures after a while so I resorted to my roots with just animals. The Pegasus one is my favorite and I love it so much! I don't like the one with the Piggyback ride as the proportions are grossly off for some aspects. The shapeshifting one is where I gave up on drawing human forms, and it’s my first time drawing a seal. And the last one is of a plotline I made up in early 2018 where Peridot and Amethyst get corrupted (Peridot first) I forgot how it exactly happened but it is very angsty until they are both corrupted. And yes, Peridot’s face is like a demogorgon’s.

Steven Universe Rewatch: The New Crystal Gems
After all this drama and action, it’s fun to have some silliness.
Strong start.
Peridot’s complete obliviousness now applies to her feelings for Lapis, too.
Up to now, Lapis and Peridot’s relationship seems completely asymmetrical: Peridot goes out of her way to do things for Lapis, Lapis just accepts that attention, not doing anything exclusively for Peridot’s sake.
Peridot doesn’t have any malice, she just doesn’t know how to calibrate her speech.
This doesn’t make any sense. It’s doubled by the fact that everyone just takes on the superficial personality traits of the people they’re copying.
When even the characters point out that the episode has a flimsy premise.
I like how this episode treats it as a given that Garnet is the “cool” one, the one you’d want to be, if given the choice. She’s clearly made a big impression on Peridot.
Connie’s action pose is very funny. It’s what would happen if someone tried to take an action pose without any preparation. Her face says, “is this what I’m supposed to be doing?”
This is sweet. I guess this must be where I got my idea for my amedot fan art where they’re doing something else but still holding hands.
Part of the reason the plan fails is that they don’t really get what the Crystal Gems actually do. Garnet isn’t just aloof.
I like the change in hair, shows a dedication to a role. Pumpkin nails it, of course.
Whenever they’re going too far with the magic, the music turns very menacing. It’s a nice change of tone to break up the comedy..
The dimensions here can’t work. A sphere could only barely get into that bucket, and the nose should be entirely soaked if the water got to her mouth.
Despite everything, Peridot doesn’t get Pearl at all. I like her trust in Pumpkin’s intelligence.
They’re really playing up the childishness here. I wonder if people dislike this episode for exaggerating too much.
That feeling when teen goofing around goes Too Far.
How could you not love Peridot? She’s great, just ask her!
This episode has a weird moral. It’s not just, “be yourself,” which is a fine, if clichè moral. It’s “don’t try to literally be another person.” I mean, duh.
They definitely did act like children... for this episode. This moment isn’t really earned.
I like how insane this sign is. That arm being made of a tube makes me think the metal is supposed to be derived from a specific piece of metal that’s been in other scenes. I can’t imagine from where.
They earned their uncomfortable action pose.
This is a fun episode. You can’t take it seriously or it doesn’t work at all.

I shouldn’t argue with people on Reddit
My clown encounter
I was talking to someone about the Camp Pining Hearts graphic novel on Reddit, and among other things, I made a joking comment about how Mr. Frowney appearing in the audience of the Camp Pining Play to watch Mr. Smiley perform might mean they’re married now. Someone in the comments had this to say to me:
Reddit clown:
That would imply that anyone on SU cares about developing characters.
Follow the jump if you would like some bloviating about how this show fails at complex relationships, a funny conspiracy theory about how fan response directly controls which characters appear and what plots the Crew writes, and a smug conclusion that No One Can Answer This Deep Question and Therefore SU Is A Bad Show.
Reddit clown:
It’s clear that the author is trying to prop up their ship by purposefully making Amedot out to be unhealthy and problematic, even if it means derailing established personality and history. It’s pretty childish really.
“Does that imply what I think it does about Mr. Frowney and Mr. Smiley? Hey, maybe they’re married now. :)”
That would imply that anyone on SU cares about developing characters.
I addressed part of the Amedot comment and also said this:
Me:
Re character development: This graphic novel was not written by anyone who writes for the show. There's not really any constructive conversation I can have from here if your position really is "no one on SU cares about developing characters," though. This just seems like such an unnecessarily negative "lol this show sucks, edgier-than-u" comment that I don't know where it can go from here and I'm not planning to follow wherever you're trying to take this.
Reddit clown:
Well in general, the show doesn’t have a good track record for character dynamics
[link to a blog post on Tumblr which is literally a one-sentence repetition of what they just said about bad group dynamics]
And given that Frowney only appeared once, sadly there’s zero chance of him and Smiley ever getting back together. Same with Mystery Girl and Pearl.
lol ok
people who have only shown up once obviously won’t ever show again
no source needed on having a good track record, we’ll just believe it’s obvious if you can find an example of someone saying this on a Tumblr blog somewhere agreeing with your assessment
Me:
I have no personal stake in whether a rare character appears again--I'm not yearning for either of those people to return--but it's straight-up weird to say someone will never show up again because they only showed up once.
Then again, I remember how confident people were that Bismuth would never return (and how consistently they coupled their absolute certainty with sneering comments about how the voice actor was surely too expensive), so I guess it's not too surprising to me that some folks still think certain characters are guaranteed to never return. Bottom line is you never know when the throwaway mailman character in episode 3 will turn out to be a regularly returning character starting in episode 56. It just doesn't make sense to pretend such things are obvious. You do not know.
As for the continued weirdness of claiming that this group of characters has no character dynamics to speak of, I mean, it's literally one of the things I've appreciated the most all along about the show, and . . . I don't have to exaggerate or read into what I see to find it, nor am I confused about whether it's actually there. I again have no personal stake in whether you feel that way. It just strikes me as a bizarro world kind of comment. You're having a VERY different experience of this show from the one I've had.
Reddit clown:
That’s different. Bismuth was brought back thanks to fan demand. Meanwhile, these are specifically one off characters, especially considering the show’s halfway over. Not everyone can rise above a one shot character.
And can you name any notable character dynamics not attached to Steven? Compare that to say Adventure Time which had great character dynamics.
Oh god
“”””Bismuth was brought back because of fan demand””””
““““Can you name any notable character dynamics”“““
Dear lord what show is this cheese log of a person watching?
Me:
It's really weird that you think Bismuth was brought back because fans "demanded" it. You don't know how the show works at all.
And "then name character dynamics not attached to Steven" is a bizarre request. If you truly did not see the literal thousands of years of history between characters that enhanced who they are and how they act long before Steven was there, me trotting them out isn't going to help you believe it's there. Steven being the strict point of view character creates a situation that Adventure Time doesn't have, so it's weird to expect the show to diverge significantly from the lens it's designed to be viewed through, but believing you've presented a gotcha here is basically admitting you haven't noticed any of the relationships between the characters that Steven actually spent a ton of time discovering--whole episodes were even dedicated to relationships between characters who aren't Steven or aren't relating to Steven when they're revealing such things. It's not even subtext.
Reddit clown:
Well after fan backlash from the episodes Bismuth, they basically had no choice but to bring her back. And given how expensive the VA is, it hurt their budget. And really, what relationships? The whole thing revolves around Steven. The Gems are Steven’s moms, Connie is Steven’s love interest, the town is Steven’s friends. The only interesting dynamic is Lars hating Steven and even then he joined the Steven cult. Look how wasted Lapis and Peridot became when they escaped Steven’s clutches.
Oh
Oh this person is one of those
““““the steven cult”“““
The objectively only interesting thing is when someone hates someone
Cartoon Network’s budget was exploded by hiring a voice actor oh god
Me:
Wow. Your obliviousness and misplaced confidence is baffling, but . . . to be honest I feel like I'm watching someone who doesn't understand they're embarrassing themselves, and it's getting uncomfortable.
I know that you don't know what's going on behind the scenes of this show, but it is really bizarre sometimes that fans believe their behavior and their outrage is changing the writing or influencing what characters they use.
You really think fans raging about things is an actual "demand" they respond to. That they "had to" bring back Bismuth because of something FANS DID. Yikes. But I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that people are still saying things like this. Some people still think the writers stole plot elements from fan theories. I don't know why some people in fandoms think they're that important or relevant. The show is not being controlled by our responses in any way. If "fan backlash" worked to bring characters back, there are many others who would have returned long ago.
And isn't that lovely, you've got a little conspiracy theory about how paying the scads of money you imagine are required for Bismuth's voice actor have "hurt the budget" (oblivious to how many voice actors on this show have done more episodes despite being more famous/having higher net worth). You clearly have zero clue about how any of this works, and you shouldn't keep pretending you have knowledge about it, especially not while talking to people who do.
As for relationships, you're not really asking me. Like I said, if I wasted my time trotting out descriptions of relationship dynamics that you should have seen for yourself if you watched the show, there's no way that would convince you they were worthwhile, well-developed relationships if the show itself didn't. I see complex and multifaceted relationships, growth, change, conflict, and resolution, in so many relationships, like Greg and Rose figuring out what love is to them, Ruby and Sapphire growing into a healthier version of who they are together, Pearl learning to think independently of serving Rose even as she struggles with her nature, the long history of Pearl with Garnet, Amethyst with Pearl, even Greg with Amethyst (all things Steven has to discover and understand only partially as the show goes on) . . . but if you truly believe characters in this show who existed before Steven appeared 14 years ago have shown no evidence of having layered relationship dynamics that do not focus on him or depend on him, I don't know what show you're watching and I can't help you.
I don't know why you're even here since just about every bit of content you've posted here is "the thing you like sucks" and completely unsupported comments about why, sourced in nothing. It's just like . . . not even an argument, it's just a weird demonstration that you don't get what's going on so you've concluded nothing is. It's weird, and normally I've got no problem with criticism or spirited discussion, but these comments are just . . . they're empty. They're demonstrations of obliviousness or willful ignorance. It's just so, so weird to talk to someone who thinks they're laying down critical points but reads as so ignorant of what even happened in the source material or behind the scenes.
For the record, this person was going on in other threads about how Amedot is better than Lapidot “objectively” and partly because “it looks cuter,” saying the writing on the entire series is garbage, that “Steven as a character doesn’t make sense,” and that the show’s writers have no standards. Wow edgy.
Reddit clown:
I mean think about it; a famous celebrity gets more likes around the same the animation goes down hill?
And I would consider the following on the writers stealing fan content; keep in mind that Rose being Pink Diamond was a widely circulated fan theory and people were very stubborn about it. It could be that the crew felt like they needed to validate them. This lead to them to an unsatisfying and out of left field twist.
And I simply don’t see the powerful character interactions people brag about. What’s the character dynamics of the Gems? Again, the blog post I posted is the gotcha moment that no can answer.
I reiterate that the blog post referenced here is one sentence, and it says, “For a show that revolves around a group of characters, SU doesn’t have very interesting group dynamics writing (when they bother having them at all).” That is this person’s “gotcha.” That is this person’s “NO ONE CAN SATISFACTORILY ANSWER THIS” criticism.
omg I’m so confused and weirded out by this.
But
THINK ABOUT IT
A CELEBRITY “GOT LIKES” AND THEN THERE WAS A SPECIFIC TIME WHEN THE ANIMATION GOES DOWNHILL
It’s obviously because Cartoon Network was bankrupted in their ANIMATION BUDGET because they had to pay Uzo Aduba
And this was “”””forced”””” to happen by FAN BACKLASH
When we whine about wanting a character back we decimate the animation budget and make it go downhill guise
AND THIS PERSON ALSO ADMITS TO BELIEVING THE SHOW WENT IN A DIFFERENT “UNSATISFYING” DIRECTION THAN THEIR ORIGINAL INTENT BECAUSE THE CREW NEEDED TO VALIDATE STUBBORN FANS. AND THEY THOUGHT THE PINK DIAMOND REVEAL WAS “OUT OF LEFT FIELD.” YIIIIIIIIKES.
I had to stop replying here (and should have much earlier) because like
wow, how can someone have NO ABILITY TO INTERPRET THE CONTENT OF A SHOW and then still be this smug about thinking they’ve got its mediocrity nailed? While also being so confident about thinking they know fans control the structure of the storytelling? Unnggggh

Monday, January 27 - First Kiss
@amedotweek
“Aww Periiiii,” The purple quartz whined, as she didn’t want Peridot to leave, all she wanted was for Peridot to stay here with her. She had deeply desired to continue spending time with the green gem, and the thought of Peridot leaving her behind was something Amethyst fretted over. She looked over at the technician; the purple gem’s eyes were now glossed over, with the corners of her mouth beginning to fall into some sort of a frown. “Do you HAVE to go?” The quartz continued to whimper, as she desperately didn’t want Peridot to leave.
Peridot gazed back at the older gem, with a rather reluctant, hesitant look in her eyes. She abruptly looked away, now avoiding making eye contact with Amethyst. She then took a deep breath, “I’m sorry, but yes, I do have to leave now. I have to go prepare the greenhouse for Little Homeschool tomorrow. I am teaching a group of gems about gardening, and what it is.” A small but oddly saddened smile began to form on Peridot’s face, “I happen to be very excited about it, it’s a good opportunity for them.”
“But Periii,” The purple quartz continued to beg and plead. The tone of her voice began to sound rather squeaky, as she tugged at the rim of the olivine gem’s shirt. She truly didn’t know why she was being so weird, so clingy, all of the sudden - but, all she wanted was for Peridot to stay here, at the temple, with her…
Peridot looked down at Amethyst, giving her a painful yet stern look, “Look, Amethyst… I’m very sorry but I have to go…,” She apologized to the other gem, now feeling somewhat guilty, like she was the one at fault. She really didn’t want to leave Amethyst like this, especially since she undoubtedly had no desire to leave at all. However, being an instructor at Little Homeworld, and helping those who were lost, trying to find themselves, was also very important to her. In an attempt to calm the desperate purple gem’s worries, she suggested, “Maybe another time?”
“Ugh whatever,” Amethyst sulked, like a toddler that had been told they couldn’t get the toy they wanted. She then crossed her arms and turned around so Peridot couldn’t see how upset she was. She almost felt bad for making such a scene, guilting Peridot into staying longer, but she just wanted Peridot to stay here. That was all she wished for. Was that too much to ask? "See ya around Dot,“ She muttered. She began to walk away from Peridot, who just stood there with confusion and guilt written all over her face.
“Amethyst-”
This got Amethyst to suddenly spin around. She was now facing Peridot again, throwing her chubby arms out in a rather frustrated manner, "Look! I’m sorry too!” Amethyst abruptly shouted. She quickly paused, instantly realizing how overly worked up she had gotten. She then took a deep breath in somewhat of an attempt to calmly collect herself, “Look, I’m sorry. It’s just - I never really get to see you anymore, and I just really miss you. Okay?”
“What do you even mean by that?” Peridot asked, the tone of her voice now sounding relatively puzzled, while she raising an eyebrow to Amethyst’s apology. She really didn’t understand the purple quartz’s frustrations and where she was coming from. What was she even talking about? “I see you all the time!”
“I meant OTHER than Little Homeschool you big doof,” Amethyst quipped, trying her best not to get frustrated with how oblivious Peridot was. She sighed, “I just.. I never get to hang out with you anymore.” All of the sudden, Amethyst paused, now starting to choke up a bit, “And I just… really really miss you, because… I love spending time with you. Y’know?.” She then looked away from the green technician, now blushing and shuffling her little feet, “…You’re my best friend Peridot.”
Peridot sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration. She wasn’t frustrated with Amethyst per se, she was just frustrated that Amethyst was right, that they barely got to see each other. It pained the green gem’s heart so much to know that Amethyst was right, “Listen… I love spending time with you too Amethyst. But, as I have stated multiple times before, helping those gems adjust to their new lives on Earth is very important to me, and to them! And introducing them to the Earth’s surroundings is an excellent opportunity for them!”
“I know, I know,” Amethyst paused, focusing her gaze on the wooden floor beneath her. She then looked around the living room as if she were trying to figure out what to say next. “…I mean, like I said, it just sucks that we don’t get to see each other that often anymore. Like – we went from seeing and spending time with each other every day to only seeing each other just for… Little Homeschool.”
“I know…,” Peridot said, unclasping the door knob as she sauntered over to Amethyst. She then embraced the bigger gem, wrapping her arms around Amethyst’s body. She rested her head on Amethyst’s shoulder, brushing against the purple quartz’s neck. Her breaths made strands of Amethyst’s long, messy hair dance and sent shivers down her nape. Peridot finally let go of Amethyst after one last tight squeeze, “We can hang out next weekend, okay?” The green gem softly whispered into the purple quartz’s ear.
Amethyst blinked, a sudden wave of sorrow overcoming her, “Okay…” she mumbled reluctantly.
Peridot let go of the purple quartz, giving her a soft, saddened smile. She then put her hand on the doorknob, trying to open the door, but for some odd reason, the door wouldn’t budge. She tried her hardest to open it, but no matter how hard she tried, it still wouldn’t open. She loudly groaned in frustration, “Why won’t this stupid thing open?” She again attempted to push the door open, putting all of her weight against it, but no matter how much of her weight she put into it, the door wouldn’t budge.
“–Uh? Dude? You good?” Amethyst asked from behind.
Peridot finally gave up, letting go of the handle, and stepping away from the old stubborn, rickety door. An impatient look began to form on her face, her tiny hands bunching into fists while she threw her arms out into the air to express how upset she was, “AMETHYST, YOUR DOOR IS BROKEN!” The younger gem shouted of exasperation, her voice was now strained, internally praying that she wasn’t trapped in the temple. Even though she had loved Amethyst and had loved spending time with her, now was simply a terrible time for her to be snowed in, stuck, as she had so much planned for the next day.
“Uhhh..Peri..,” Amethyst faltered, tapping Peridot’s shoulder from behind, looking around the room without focus. She was thinking about how she could tell Peridot why the door wasn’t opening for her, without the green gem getting angry. “…Look out the window,” The purple quartz insinuated, now pointing at the window with her stubby finger, “We’re… snowed in..”
“WHAT?!” The technician shouted, now alarmed, looking at Amethyst with pure frustration and horror in her eyes. She promptly buried her face into her tiny hands, completely and utterly upset by the fact that she was snowed in. “Well, this is just perfect!” Peridot grumbled in defeat, lifting her face out of her hands. She was now making frustrated hand gestures as she ranted, “I can’t believe we’re snowed in! Ugh, what are we supposed to do about classes tomorrow Amethyst?”
“Dude, no worries!” Amethyst consoled Peridot. She gently placed her hand on the olivine gem’s shoulder in order to reassure her that everything was going to be alright and there was really nothing to fret over. She continued to comfort the green gem’s anxious thoughts by saying, “We’ll cancel classes for tomorrow, and stay in. Okay?”
However, the purple quartz’s efforts to comfort her didn’t really work as the technician stood from her place and headed near the warp pad that sat in the temple. “Are you sure the warp pad won’t work? Can we at least try it?” She added while just staring at the bare, teal, crystalline teleporting device.
“Nah, I’m sorry dude, but I doubt it’s gonna work. Steven tried it the other day and it… was a mess,” She giggled, remembering Steven trying to use the warp pad the other day. “But hey, it’s okay dude! Like I said, we can always cancel classes if we need to and you can spend the night here! …Heh, we can have a shorty squad slumber party!”
Peridot’s eyes narrowed in confusion by the purple quartz’s remark. “What do you mean by a ‘shorty squad slumber party’ exactly?” Peridot asked, raising an eyebrow, slightly tilting her head. She started to head back to where Amethyst was standing, as it was clear as day the warp pad wouldn’t work.
“Y’know, we can have a sleepover, as in you spending the night here! I can set up the couch by getting some pillows and blankets from my room. And – I can set the fireplace! Ooo, I can also make hot chocolate, and it’ll be fun to just… Y’know.. hangout!” Amethyst rambled, making hand gestures as she was listing off what she needed to do to set up their “shorty squad slumber party”.
“…That does sound pretty nice actually.”
“Heck yeah, it does!” Amethyst exclaimed, the shape of her pupils turning into stars. “I’m gonna go get some blankets and pillows from my room real quick! Be right back!” She said as she hurried off into her room. After Amethyst came back and set up the living room for their “shorty squad slumber party”, she made hot chocolate for her and Peridot. Amethyst watched the younger gem push around the marshmallows in her hot chocolate with her finger., as she gave the drink an odd look. It’s not that Peridot didn’t like it, she did. It was just so… different.
“Yeah yeah, I know. I miss the fun bendy straws too. Steven said it was ‘better for the environment’ and basically banned them from the house. But hey, I’m not complaining,” She explained to Peridot, finishing her hot chocolate within one big gulp. “Huh, they always went down weird,” She chuckled.
Peridot looked over at the purple quartz, as a light blue blush had dusted her cheeks and her tiny nose. “Well, actually..” the gem smiled softly while she spoke. “We haven’t really hung out ever since..” She paused for a second, then quietly sighing, “I… actually quite miss trying the weird things that humans consume and.. talking with you.”
This got Amethyst to blush, giving the technician a soft, affectionate smile, “Aw dude… I missed you too.” She paused again, looking off to the side, the blush on her face growing even bigger by the minute. “Look, Dot, I’m… sorry for acting really weird and clingy earlier. Like I said, I just… really missed you. I.. really missed getting to spend time with my favorite nerd,“ She apologized, the soft smile on her face slowly disappearing. She set her hot cocoa down and then crossed her arms, a bashful look now slowly creeping onto her face.
“No no, it’s okay! …I mean, I get it, so don’t feel small over… missing me. Though I do want to apologize to you too.. I’m sorry for not making the effort to hang out with you more often, Amethyst,” Peridot apologized to her. The blush on her face began to grow, her face slowly turning from green to a light blue, “It’s not really fair to you… and I never wanted to make you feel like I didn’t want to hang out with you anymore.”
“No dude, ya don’t hafta apologize! I get it too… I mean everything HAS changed… ever since we made peace with the diamonds and healed those corrupted gems… I guess that’s why we’ve grown apart… It sucks but stuff like that happens, y’ know?” Amethyst explained to the younger gem that it was no one’s part that the two grew apart. Amethyst knew that stuff like that happened in a friendship, people naturally grow apart, and it was really no one’s fault.
"Y-yeah..”
“But.. we should DEFINITELY hang out more often.. what d’ya say Dot?”
“O-Of course!” She blurted out excitedly, a little too over-enthusiastic. Peridot then blushed, burying her face into her hands again. She was incredibly embarrassed by her little outburst, as Amethyst sat across from her, with a rather surprised look on her face. “I-I didn’t mean to… to shout. I’m sorry!” The technician gem apologized again,as she lifted her face out of her hands, now visibly shaking.
Amethyst cracked a wide grin, with a tint of a dark purple dusting her chubby cheeks, “You really miss me that much, huh?”
“..Well, I wouldn’t lie about it.”
Silence had hit the two of them, as the two sat in complete and utter silence, with Peridot absentmindedly staring at the purple quartz. Peridot had found the purple quartz… stunning, gorgeous, beautiful, with her deep blue eyes, her little nose, her full, plum stained lips, her curves, her chub, her thick and pale messy lavender hair. She was so attractive to the olivine gem, at which Peridot couldn’t help but stare at Amethyst. Although she thought she was being subtle, Amethyst seemed to catch on, “Uhhh Peridot?”
Peridot looked into Amethyst’s eyes, “Yes?”
“….Why are you staring at me like that?” Amethyst asked Peridot. She was obviously confused by the olivine gem just staring at her, with a funny look in her eyes and her little round nose crinkling. She then slightly tilted her head, as she was going to ask, “What? Is there something on my face? Or in m’a teeth?”
The technician looked like she had frozen in time, with a rather embarrassed, almost repulsed look now on her face. She suddenly shook her head, like she was trying to snap out of the spell that had been cast on her, “No! No… uh… cold… I’m cold!” She then buried her face into her hands again, with her face burning with frustration and shame.
“Pft - what Dot? Ya want me to cuddle you to keep you warm or something like that?” The purple quartz not so subtly teased the other gem. The tone of her voice now sounded playful, rather than confused, puzzled. But at the same time, she sounded like she was trying to make things less awkward between the two. Amethyst was now giving the younger gem a silly, playful smile, instead of giving her an odd, funny look.
“Well…”
“Oh uh, I was just kidding but… sure,” Amethyst blushed, not exactly knowing how to react. She was so shocked that everything felt surreal to her all of the sudden. But, at the same time, she was also strangely happy that Peridot actually wanted to cuddle with her. Peridot had never been the affectionate type and she really really liked Peridot – and not just in the way, where a friend loved a friend, it was something way more than that. “C’mere Dot…” Peridot got up and moved across the couch, sitting right down next to the purple quartz. Amethyst then wrapped her arm around Peridot, pulling the green gem’s body into a warm, comforting embrace. Peridot rested her head on Amethyst’s chest, her face burning even more with a bright shade of baby blue. She buried her face into Amethyst’s chest out of embarrassment, she really didn’t want the older gem to see her so… flustered.
“… Thank you,” The younger gem quietly said, her face still buried in Amethyst’s chest. Being in Amethyst’s arms made her feel so safe and so calm but at the same time, it made her feel so embarrassed and flustered. It felt incredibly strange to Peridot that being in the quartz’s arms made her feel so many differing feelings.
“….It’s really no problem.”
“But.. you didn’t have to do this Amethyst,” Peridot argued back with her, now feeling kind of guilty and even more embarrassed than she already was before. She hoped that she hadn’t pressured Amethyst into cuddling with her, because she didn’t want to make Amethyst feel uncomfortable or weirded out at all.
Amethyst took a deep breath, “…But… to be honest with you, I actually kinda wanted to. Y’know?”
In response to Amethyst’s confessions, Peridot gave the purple quartz a soft little smile. She took off her bright yellow visors, which revealed a pair of big and soft blue eyes. Amethyst blushed for what felt like the millionth time that night, as she had found Peridot’s eyes to be so incredibly beautiful and part of what made Peridot beautiful as a whole. Peridot nuzzled her face into Amethyst’s neck, which got the other gem to purr softly. This lead to more silence, as the two held each other in a loving embrace and Peridot listened to the other gem purr.
After a few minutes of just pure complete silence, Peridot slowly sat up. She had now broken from Amethyst’s hold, unintentionally pushing her away. She then broke the silence by speaking up, “Amethyst…?” She hesitantly asked. She was now nervously twiddling her fingers. And although she was avoiding making eye contact with the other gem, Amethyst could still see that the technician looked like she had butterflies swirling in her stomach.
“Huh?” Amethyst asked, with a perplexed tone in her voice, the smile on her face and the darker tone of purple that had dusted her cheeks now disappearing. She looked extremely confused, with her eyes narrowed and her nose crinkled, as Peridot was acting rather strange all of the sudden.
Peridot gulped, as she was now about to tell Amethyst one of her deepest darkest secrets. A secret she had kept to herself for years now. She looked down at the palms of her hands, now clammy and sweaty with nervousness, she then looked back up at the purple quartz, taking a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself down. “…I really like you, Amethyst. A-And it’s not just in the way where it’s exactly… friendly. It is incredibly more complicated than that. I like you in the way where I want to hold your hand, hug you, cuddle, and kiss you… I-I believe earthlings call it romantic.”
Peridot then closed her eyes, now looking away from the other gem in complete shame and embarrassment. The damage had already been done, she had already accepted that she ruined her own friendship with Amethyst. And all Amethyst could do was just stare at the gem who had just confessed to having a crush on her. She was now bewildered, swirling with so many confusing emotions. So many thoughts were running through her head now. The gem she had been pining for years now had liked her back? Peridot had felt the same exact way about her? It was all so… strange. Reality hit, as she had zoned out trying to collect her scattered thoughts. She finally responded to Peridot’s confessions after what felt like hours of complete silence, “And what are you gonna do about it?”
Peridot’s blue eyes fluttered open. She ended up looking back at Amethyst to find the older gem giving her a huge dorky smile with a darker purple color now burning her cheeks. This caused Peridot to perk up, now blushing and smiling back at the other gem. Amethyst could be too adorable for Peridot from time to time. “Oh. I don’t know… kiss you?” The technician asked, the tone of her voice now sounding flirty, rather than shy, anxious.
“Then kiss me.”
“O-ok..”
Amethyst looked at Peridot, wearing the softest but also most flirtatious smile Peridot had ever seen from the purple quartz. Peridot then pushed Amethyst’s long bangs out of her wide blue eyes and started to slowly lean in, closer to the purple quartz. Closing her eyes and slowly tilting her head. Even though she had seen kissing for what felt like hundreds of times before, kissing was almost entirely new to her. It was almost quite terrifying actually, and it felt completely surreal to her that she was about to share her very first kiss with Amethyst. And with one swift movement, Amethyst was the one to close the distance between them by softly but firmly pressing her lips against Peridot’s. Peridot pushed forward, letting out a pleased sigh, now melting into the kiss. She moved one of her small hands to the side of Amethyst’s round face, gently cupping it. After a few moments, Amethyst ended up being the one to pull away, giving Peridot the most loving, adoring smile. But then, their lips met again, and again, and again, as kissing each other became simply addictive.
After minutes of just kissing each other, the two felt it was time to pull away from each other. Amethyst leaned in again, but this time, she gave Peridot a tender small kiss on the gem placed on her forehead. She then gently rested her forehead against Peridot’s. “I guess I really like you too… heh,” The purple quartz joked, giving Peridot a weak but also soft and adoring smile. Her voice now sounded hoarse, like she was in some sort of a haze. “So… how are ya feeling now, Peri?”
Peridot took a deep breath, in order to collect her scattered thoughts, “A lot… I feel a lot… actually. Nothing bad of course!! But… right now, I am sure of the fact that being here with you has made me so happy and… I am so glad that you feel the same. I am so incredibly glad that I could have this with.. you.”
Amethyst smiled at the younger gem softly, and couldn’t help it but lean in and kiss her on the lips again, “Me too Dot… me too..” Next, she snuck in another kiss at Peridot’s jawline. She then pulled away from her, “But… not gonna lie… I’m actually getting pretty tired… do you mind if I rest my head in your lap? Or..?”
“Of course not,” The technician responded with a content, peaceful smile across her face, inviting Amethyst onto her lap. And at last, Amethyst gently rested her head in Peridot’s lap, as the olivine gem caressed it. She ran her tiny fingers through Amethyst’s lavender mane, twirling her loose lavender curls, at which Amethyst gazed back up at her, lovingly. Soon, she fell asleep in Peridot’s arms, with Peridot gazing back down at her with a soft smile across her face and a warm, gentle look in her eyes.

New character arcs and new back story because canon sucks again
Main 4 cast with notes on characters that need notes for changes to make sense Garnet: yesyesyesyesyeysyes everything good about this show. There’s not enough garnet centric things where she’s just herself and not about ruby and sapphire. More information on Garnet. Shes stoicly funny and just murders people with words sometimes. show her being rose’s top tactician. turning the tides of the war that were never in the crystal gem’s favor. maybe theres a fun earth thing shes into. Her room is the heart of the temple for a reason now. Its a balance between pearl and amethyst. The bubbles are organized, but she has her own side space with things she does as hobbies. She has a collection of antique books that she likes to read lava side and she often meditates to see corrupted gems and a future in which the CGs encounter them. maybe she even draws them out to combine ruby’s need to Do with sapphire's need to Know. Fusion is still very important to her, but not she has plot relevant interests that make sense with her character. Her character arc involves her being the first of her kind. shes something completely new! just like steven is. and for that not to bind them together is silly. She wants the best for steven and he makes her want to be an even better leader now that rose is gone and shes the only one left. she makes him think about his actions and slows down his hyper activity when he or amethyst are trying to do something reckless. From him she learns that it’s okay to let her guard down more. Homeworld might come back, but it’s not all on her shoulders. the CGs are a family and they’ll protect everyone together. Garnet in jailbreak is the first time we know shes a fusion and before that we get more about her character not just from environment around her, but her reactions to things. Maybe she feels like she needs to be in control because shes afraid that without rose, homeworld is more a danger than ever.
Amethyst: I like most of her progression actually!!! a few things I’d mess with is when she’s unnecessary hurtful to people she loves, like greg, when she shape shifted into rose, and peridot when she all but threw her stuff into the ocean. these things need to be gotten rid of, or addressed by the narrative. I’d also like to see her hanging around Vidalia wayyyyy sooner or to have a reason why they dont. As for reasons, maybe Amethyst did or said something hurtful toward her, lashing out at her for whatever reason that made their friendship strained. while a decade is a long time for a human, for a gem its nothing. so while she feels bad, Am’ isnt going to apologize herself!!! she didnt do anything wrong!!! and maybe Vidalia is the first person steven convinces her to apologize to. Steven teaches her compassion and is, in return, the gem he can relate to the best. He goes to her first with gem issues and she acts like an older sibling, trying to teach him or cover up mistakes so pearl and garnet dont find out. I think i’d like a progression of Am’ refusing to apologize to Vidalia, realizing that she was wrong and apologizing to greg, but he breaks down and can’t move past that, rendering their friendship difficult and strained as a “sometimes apologizing isnt enough and you have to change your behavior“ and then the third beat with peridot either not happening at all, where she doesnt throw someone’s comfort items into the ocean which, i think steven shouldve realized and stopped her from doing anyway, BUT if you just NEED that mistake on her part, i feel like this could be a “sometimes, you dont know how bad you hurt someone and you should apologize when you find out“ with peridot being hurt and not talking to her and amethyst has to do a big gesture to show shes sorry. I also feel like that fleshes out amedot as a ship and while i dont care about who peridot ends up with, i care about story and the way im going to make this story go, lapis will be in that fun moral grey area and i want more options in terms of story telling and of fan choice. Also!!! explore the possibility of her being deep cut and thats why shes a runt. she only looks smaller but has all these strengths because of it!!! it fits in really well and bismuth or peridot maybe because she was made for kindergardening, could tell her about it and watch her get excited because shes not ”wrong“ she never came out “wrong“ shes just different and thats okay!
Pearl: Was white diamond’s pearl, first of all! that makes every interaction more interesting, because no only did she defect from homeworld, but she defected from the Queen of homeworld and everything it stood for basically. We learn more about how homeworld operates and what places in society each gem fits from pearl, because while she doesn’t believe it herself, she isn’t kept from talking about diamonds now and what one she served. in this funky fresh au, she is sent by white to make sure the new diamond they’re cultivating from earth comes out properly (aka where the fuck did russia go) and getting her equipped with all of the technology she would need to properly rule. this is where she first meets a quartz soldier. at first she’s taken aback by the quartz’s forwardness, no one had ever talked to her like... an equal before. shes not sure if shes allowed to speak, though, she knows theyre waiting for a response. Their first interactions always begin with her requesting permission to speak. They have to wait a few more years for pink to emerge and while they’re there they slowly become friends as the life is leeched out of the area. we could have a snapshots of them waiting for together, rose getting bored and convincing pearl to come do things with her, slowly breaking her out of her shell. Pearl’s difficulty and character arc comes from not just rose and getting over her feelings, which is perfectly fine, but doesnt need to be her only trait, but finding out who she is now, not just after rose, but with humanity as a whole. with the war well and truly over. she wants to learn about what rose thought was so important to fight for, to die for, and because of that, we get her partaking in human activities that arent eating or drinking, because she still dislikes them. While Garnet reads and collects books, i think pearl being really into her weapons collection is a good idea to flesh her out more. Where did she get her swords from? Well thats a mystery. She mentions someone she cared about a long time ago made them for her and thus we get some fun bismuth foreshadowing.
Rose: And rose..... god... we could of had it all by adele plays in the background anytime i think about her. Here we have a very beautiful fat woman. Shes framed as elegant and regal by the show time and time again and i LOVED that. however after the pink diamond reveal, I have such mixed feelings about her. No more diamond bullshit. Shes the first gem that popped out. Technically she’s too early and she goes to stand guard around the birthplace of her diamond. That is where she and pearl first meet. Pearl is the first gem she ever talks to and while she innately knows stuff about home world, shes pick up a lot from the humans that live nearby. theyve shown her kindness and given her furs to wear and in turn she helped them heal their wounded by crying on them. (yes she still has healing powers sue me) she loves the humans and takes to befriending them before pearl shows up. The two of them get close and after pink diamond pops out, rose realizes what the creation of gems truly means for the world around her. They’re killing what was here before them. This isn’t creation. It’s an invasion. Being the only quartz out so far, shes forced into the role of commander for pink. Her favored soldier. And the more she does what she was “made for” the more she hates it and the more she hates the diamond authority. she convinces pink that some humans are worth keeping. As a curiosity, my diamond. they could prove useful to terraforming other planets or moons to accept life and in time, gem cultivation. She gets poofed while trying to save someone from the group of people she first made friends with. Maybe pink shatters whoever poofed her for not following her orders because of course Rose wouldnt defy her. rose is Loyal, unlike the rest of you lack luster garbage. Rose comes back with her iconic dress and shes here and queer and shes fucking Done with this shit. she hears about the shattering on her behalf and she goes to pink and asks why and she feels sick to her stomach because star, my diamond, she isnt Worth it. she isnt worth the cost of someone else’s whole Life!!! Oh rose... you’ve always been soft hearted. in this time, Pearl is quietly there. waiting to be called back by white as pink pearl has just been sent to take her place. And this is it. This is the moment rose decides to rebel. according to homeworld, her life should be no more than any other quartz. her life shouldnt be traded for that of others. So why? Why did pink do this? Do the gems in her court mean nothing to her? This is the first time a gem has ever summoned two weapons. A Sword and Shield. A knight turning on her master. She tried to attack pink. to poof her. to send a message right here and now that gems are all equal. that a lowly rose quartz is strong enough to take on a diamond! She fails, but only partly. she manages to strike a blow, but pink stays in tact long enough to strike on of her own, sending rose retreating into her gem. This is when pearl has to make a choice. No matter what she’d be shattered. Pink’s wrath when she reforms, white’s when she finds out about what happened. This is a death sentence. But if its a death sentence, its one she’ll choose for herself. she takes rose’s shield and uses the face of it to shatter pink herself, scooping up rose’s gem and getting as far away as fast as she can. This is the start of a war.
Steven: Oh boi. So i love steven, but theres moments where hes just... not good and the story doesnt stop him from doing that. So if were gonna say hes a kid with emotion based powers, we know hes soft and sweet and excitable. sometimes he pushes people too far because hes trying to do what he thinks is best. I want him to wrestle with the fact that his mom, this person everyone says is good, killed someone. she did something so horrible and she never killed anyone again, but she still did it once. I’d like him to get bits and pieces of his mothers memories and so we get to see the world and flashback things that happened in real time. Maybe he tries to talk to pearl about it, but she still wont instead of cant. He feels like an outcast and everyone would rather his mom be there, but they have him instead. basically a lot of his earlier character arc stuff before garnet and pearl talk to him about how homeworld was. They dont think hes old enough to hear about war, but it seems war is coming back and hes unprepared to face it without learning more. he facilitates more interactions with the townies and now its not just a war of gems against gems, they have humans on their side too and they’ll win!
